Adore-a-pups seek homes These adorable eight-week-old puppies, along with their equally cute mother, are all looking for new homes. Wyndham council animal rangers picked up the pups’ mother, 10-month-old Winnie, while she was wandering the streets last month. Staff at the Wyndham City Pound in Hoppers Crossing discovered she had recently given birth. Although Winnie had no microchip or any form of identification, pound employees managed to find her owner on Facebook. They discovered Winnie had given birth to nine puppies, just five weeks earlier. Winnie’s owner surrendered all the dogs to the pound. After reuniting the staffy/kelpie pups with their mother, volunteers from the Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue took them into foster care. Wyndham councillor Heather Marcus said the puppies were now ready for adoption, after being desexed and microchipped. “We’re also hoping we can find someone who will take Winnie along with one of her puppies,” she said. Cr Marcus said Winnie was a “perfect example” of why it was important for Wyndham residents to desex and microchip their pets. New fire stations funded By Alesha Capone Truganina and Wyndham Vale CFA captains have welcomed $7.5 million in state government funding for new fire stations for their brigades. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino visited the current Wyndham Vale fire station on Friday to deliver the news to a group of CFA volunteers. Mr Pallas said the funding would be split between the two brigades, with $1.5 million to be put towards the acquisition of land for each
site and $2.25 million for the development of the two new stations. Construction of the new, permanent stations is expected to be completed by June 2019. Mr Pallas said the new stations would mean “improved fire services to cope with continued population growth” in Wyndham Vale and Truganina. Wyndham Vale CFA brigade captain Trevor Weston said the unit’s volunteers were “really excited” about the funding announcement. He said their present station, on Ballan Road,

was only ever meant to be a temporary base. Mr Weston said the unit had about 40 operational members, all volunteers, and moving to a bigger station would enable them to expand by about 20 members. He said while it was “early days” for the planning of the new station, it was set to be about “four or five times bigger” than the current station. It will include more space for emergency training, meeting rooms, offices, a kitchen and an expanded motor room to park fire vehicles.
Mr Weston said the CFA was working with developers to find a site for the new Wyndham Vale fire station. Truganina CFA captain Colleen Goodfellow said her unit was also in the process of searching for a location to build its future station. The brigade’s 75 volunteers are now based at a leased site on Leakes Road, where they have separate buildings for the motor room, a meeting room and storage shed. “Building a new station, it means everything will be under one roof, which will be good.”

Cops respond to river trail fears By Alesha Capone Wyndham police have boosted patrols along the Werribee River Trail in response to concerns about drinking, drug use and anti-social behaviour after dark. Inspector Marty Allison said that in the past two months, police had become “increasingly aware” of issues such as public drinking along the trail. “We know it’s been trending that way for a little bit and we are getting patrols to go down there,” he said.
“We have increased our presence down there to help boost people’s perceptions of safety and make the area safe for people to enjoy.” Last Thursday, John Marks from the Werribee River Association (WRA) took Star Weekly on a tour of the space by the river rail bridge, near Werribee train station. Syringes, sharps containers and alcohol cans were scattered under the bridge. On July 9, volunteers from the Beach Patrol 3030 – which is managed by the WRA – and the Australian India Foundation collected 15 syringes while conducting a clean-up near the
river at Wyndham Park. Mr Marks said he had also cleaned up liquor containers, condoms, small plastic bags and balloons dumped in the Heaths Road carpark of the Riverbend Historical Park. “There appears to be a lot of binge drinking going on,” he said. Star Weekly last week used Facebook to ask residents if they thought it was safe to walk along the river at night. Most respondees said they would not feel safe, day or night, with some citing concerns about “junkies”, “drugged people”, teenagers drinking near the
river and a lack of lighting. However, one man said that, although he believed it was unsafe near the river, it was no worse than other parts of Werribee. Wyndham acting chief executive Kate Roffey said the council and state government were developing a master plan for Wyndham Park that would include a river trail with walking and cycling paths and river terraces. She said the council was also working to establish a riverside promenade on the city side of the river to encourage businesses to face the waterway.

Fire risks and storage issues have been identified at a second site owned by the recycling company at the centre of a major toxic blaze burning for five days in Melbourne’s north. The Environment Protection Authority discovered a “backlog of unsorted waste” at SKM Recycling’s Laverton North plant on Friday. More than 100 households were told to evacuate on Thursday night as fire at the company’s Coolaroo plant took hold. EPA Victoria, Wyndham council and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade inspected SKM Recycling’s Laverton North plant on Friday to “hold SKM to account” and assess fire hazards and stormwater contamination at the recycling centre in Gilbertson Road. The Friday inspection of a “backlog of unsorted waste” at the facility has led the EPA to serve SKM three notices, starting with demands for a temporary sorting line to clear the build-up of waste. The company must also provide the EPA with details of waste volumes it has accepted, processed and sold at Laverton North, and to verify claims it has made about market demand for sorted recycling materials. The EPA has also demanded safety measures be installed to protect stormwater from runoff from unwashed rubbish. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said: “The EPA is committed to holding SKM, and other operators of similar sites, to account”. He said EPA staff met SKM company director Robert Italiano at Laverton on Friday “to gain an understanding of waste movements”.

By Charlene Macaulay It’s hard to believe looking at him now, but a month ago Bill Deering was on the brink of death. The 45-year-old Point Cook father of four suffered a stroke at home and died twice in the ambulance on the way to Sunshine Hospital. Doctors were quick to act and clot busting drugs helped result in a miraculous recovery. Within hours, Mr Deering got his speech back. He was discharged from hospital four days later and completed a marathon in Perth two weeks after that.
The running enthusiast will next run a 160-kilometre ultra marathon at the You Yangs this weekend, and at the end of this month he will run the half-marathon with Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan in Run Melbourne. Mr Deering, who suffered his first stroke when he was 32, said his quick reaction and recovery last month was vastly different to that of his first stroke, after he waited almost 20 hours to go to the hospital. “I was a shift worker at the time, so I thought I was just overworked ‌ the damage that was caused was permanent,â€? he said.
To this day, Mr Deering has slow dexterity on the left-hand side of his body, and has no feeling in his left leg from the knee down. “A stroke doesn’t really discriminate. A lot of people do think – as I did when I had my first one – that stroke is an old people’s thing, but it’s not. “[It’s important] to understand the signs of stroke, and to get to hospital as soon as possible. “My first stroke, I didn’t seek medical treatment until 20 hours later, and I’m still dealing with those deficits, whereas my MRIs and scans from this stroke show almost no signs of a clot.�
A 16-year-old Hoppers Crossing teen has had his new monkey bike impounded after he was caught riding unlicensed recently. Westgate Highway Patrol allegedly nabbed the teen riding along Red Brick Bridge over Skeleton Creek about 10.30am on July 7. He was charged with unlicensed driving, riding an unregistered motorcycle and riding a monkey bike on a road-related area. He will face the Werribee Children’s Court at a later date. Police also impounded the teen’s monkey bike – which he had only bought the day before – for 30 days. The intercept occurred during highway patrol’s second shift with its new off-road motorbikes. Wyndham council recently splashed out $30,000 on two new trail bikes for Wyndham Police to enable more patrols of public reserves following increasing complaints from local residents about hooning. Residents in Hawthorn Drive have said the sound of hoons on dirt bikes on the reserve backing on to their Hoppers Crossing street was like “living on a race track�. Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans, from Westgate Highway Patrol, said Gordon O’Keefe Reserve in Wyndham Vale and Laverton North’s Lawrie Emmins Reserve were other hot spots for dirt bike and monkey bike riders. Werribee commuter crush ‘critical’ By Alesha Capone Melbourne’s train operator has predicted the Werribee train line will be “at capacity” by 2019. The warning was contained in Metro’s 2016 Strategic Operational Plan, which was leaked to Fairfax Media earlier this month. The document stated that the Werribee line would be “at capacity by 2019 once the additional paths provided by the Regional Rail Link Project have been used”. The Regional Rail Link (RRL), which runs
between the Southern Cross and Werribee train stations, opened two years ago. It separated regional trains from metropolitan trains, enabling room for extra services – known as “train paths” – to run each hour on existing railway lines, including Werribee. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said it was “critical” that Metro and the state government reformed timetables to make better use of the available fleet and track capacity. Mr Bowen said that if the Werribee line did reach capacity by 2019, the daily commute

could become uncomfortable for travellers. “It can be very unpleasant travelling in packed trains – if you can squeeze aboard, you’re crushed in with your fellow passengers, sometimes barely able to move during the journey,” he said. “In some cases there’s simply no room to board, and you’re left waiting on
the platform for another train, which may or may not arrive in time to get you to work on time.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said that in August this year the state government would be adding 10 peak services and 20 new services to the Werribee line between 4pm and 5pm each week. He said the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project would also provide more space to run more trains, in and out of Melbourne’s CBD and create a “24 per cent more peak capacity on the Werribee line”.

Kevin Hillier says councillors deserve more money
I
noted with interest that our councillors voted in favour of a pay rise for themselves recently and – surprise, surprise – I am in total agreement with their decision. In fact, I believe if they are doing their job properly, they probably deserve more. The current council is an interesting mix of people with diverse reasons for being on the job, but I doubt one of them is there for the money. The semi-professional nature of the position allows for imperfections. You get what you pay for, and with due respect to the council, that is exactly what we are getting. To attract more qualified, more committed people, the package has to be beefed up. The council allowance of $29,630 is little more than an honorarium for the hours needed to do the job properly. The mayor receives $94,641 as the demands are more than a normal councillor. To put this in perspective, the base salary of a state MP is $148,210. That’s about five councillors for every MP. Regular readers will know I recently wrote that this state government is the level of government I find
superfluous, and as you can see also very costly. Keyboard warriors criticised the pay rise but not with the ferocity usually associated with an unpopular council decision. The best way to voice your disapproval is at the ballot box, or at least that has usually been the case.
O
n that subject, I am wondering where the investigation into the last council election is at. We were never promised a speedy resolution, and to be honest, we never expected one, but updates on progress would keep this as transparent as possible. The sooner this is resolved, the better, especially for those who have been dragged into this when they have never had a case to answer. The guilty, if there are any, will be dealt with, but the innocent parties have the stigma of this unfairly hanging over them. There is also a question of uncertainty about council business that might be affected during this investigation and what ramifications it will have depending on the outcome. So the message is clear – get it resolved. ■

Police have charged four teenagers in relation to an armed robbery last Tuesday (July 11), in which cigarettes and cash were allegedly stolen from a Thornbury store. An initiative based at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre has helped more than 70 people break through barriers to finding employment. The work@west project, which began in October, is part of the wider Jobs Victoria network and is funded by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. The work@west project is run by the centre (also known as WCEC), the Westgate Community Initiatives Group and Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services.
Jobs Victoria employment coach Craig Spicer said that since November, work@west had placed 73 people into jobs. Under the program, Fresh Select Farms and Fragapane Farms in Werribee South, along with Vertech Hume in Werribee, have taken on workers. Baby boom for Mercy Staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s maternity ward have got their hands full, with about 10 babies being born at the hospital each day. A record 3781 babies, including 21 sets of twins, were born at Werribee Mercy during the 2015-16 financial year, with an almost even split of genders (52.2 per cent boys, 47.8 per cent girls). That’s up from 3711 bubs in 2015-16, 3144 births in 2014-15 and 2739 babies born in 2013-14. Mercy Health health services chief executive Linda Mellors said the hospital was expected to deliver, on average, 321 babies each month over 2017-18. Based on those projections, about 3852 babies will be born at Werribee Mercy this financial year. Meanwhile, St Vincent’s Private Hospital

Smart city is streets ahead By Charlene Macaulay Imagine being able to walk through Werribee’s CBD and seeing all the developments that are planned for the area. At Wyndham council, it’s as simple as popping on a headset. The council’s WynLens project has employed holographic mixed-reality technology – merging real and virtual worlds to produce new environments where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact – to provide a three-dimensional vision of what the future holds for Werribee. The Australian-first technology is so cutting edge that it recently won the 2017 National Award for Excellence in Local Government. The council’s project team has also been accepted to go to the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona later this year, and is looking for corporate sponsorship to fund the trip. Dr Adam Mowlam, who spearheaded the project, said there was also scope to do a virtual “walk-through” of a proposed development. He said the council had applied for a federal government grant to expand the scope of the WynLens project. Wyndham council’s head of strategy and policy impact Natalie Walker, said since winning the award Wyndham had been approached by councils from all over Australia who were keen to find out how they could adapt the technology in their areas. “We see the potential for us to deploy [this] across local government in Victoria but also potentially around Australia and the world if we design the next phase of the project,” Ms Walker said. “All councils are grappling with this idea of how do you communicate, improve decision making, make it quicker, give residents,

developers and investors a really quick understanding of what’s going on, once you put it on you can see it’s a really unique way of engaging people.” The WynLens project is just one of the initiatives the council’s new smart cities portfolio is working on in a bid to create
efficiencies in the way the city operates through technology. Earlier this month, the council rolled out a number of solar-powered “smart bins” across Werribee’s CBD that automatically crush rubbish and recycling so that the bins can hold up to 600 litres of material – five
times the capacity of an average rubbish bin. Dr Mowlam said the smart cities team also planned to look at the city’s traffic problems by integrating data from VicRoads, Google maps and using sensors on Wyndham’s roads to get a complete picture of congestion and traffic flow.

“If we have high traffic – if there’s an incident, or road works going on – we’ve got a body of evidence to say head this way instead,” he said. Ms Walker added: “At the heart of it is the council understanding and looking at innovative ways to deal with the congestion issue in our city. We know that that’s a really critical issue for our residents, and the council’s really keen to look at what it can do to improve that situation, whether it’s infrastructure, technological deployment, advocacy to the state.”

The team also plans to install sensors on stormwater drains to monitor and manage flooding, particularly in older parts of Werribee and Hoppers Crossing. The portfolio is also trying to move many traditional council services – such as paying your rates bill, pet registration, applying for a parking permit – online, and is developing a smart city strategy that details its plans and goals for the future. “We do have a strong workforce in the technology space … and it’s a young community, so they’re generally very accepting of technology,” Dr Mowlam said. Smart city portfolio holder Aaron An said the smart cities department was in response to residents wanting the council to be innovative, and do more with less. “We are transforming the way we operate, we are exploring new and different ways to engage with our residents, stakeholders, businesses and visitors,” Cr An said.

Wardens ride-along rebooted By Alesha Capone A partnership, which has led to a decline in anti-social behaviour on some bus routes in the west, is set to be renewed. Three years ago, bus company CDC Victoria and volunteers from the Wyndham-based Victoria Maori Wardens joined forced to launch a youth engagement initiative. It involves volunteers from the warden’s group travelling for free on bus routes in areas including Werribee, Sunshine, Highpoint and
Footscray, to engage with youths who might be at risk of anti-social behaviour. CDC’s community engagement manager Michelle Ho McKersey described the partnership as “literally made in heaven”. She said anti-social behaviour on buses, including fare evasion, graffiti, violence and abuse towards drivers, was “a huge problem”. But last year, the wardens helped contribute to a 42.6 per cent decrease in overall incidents compared to 2015. She said the wardens helped to prevent 20
counts of anti-social behaviour and 15 counts of fare evasion in 2016. “We’re so thankful for the Vic Wardens volunteers who step up and engage with the youth and help us in our task to reclaim respect for our drivers,” she said. She said CDC has asked Public Transport Victoria to allow the wardens to continue travelling on buses for free until June 30, 2020. “This is yet to be confirmed in writing but we are confident it will materialise,” she said. Maria Kumar, a Victoria Maori Wardens
volunteer, said the volunteers had “a great relationship” with the bus drivers. “I think the key to the difference we make on the buses is our presence, our presence creates prevention, can be an early intervention depending on the situation and the public wants to get involved and talk to us,” she said. Fellow Maori Warden Foisha Harris said commuters often thank volunteers for their service. Wyndham Inspector Marty Allison said police were “very supportive” of the “amazing work” done by the Victoria Maori Wardens.
Nomination a real lift Global Lift Hire co-owners Matthew Antonello and Phil Alabakis are still in high spirits, after their company was named among the finalists for the Wyndham Business Awards. The two friends, aged 30 and 35 respectively, started their Werribee business, which provides scissor lifts and boom lifts for shortand long-term hire, in November last year. Mr Antonello said that because their business was fairly new, they were surprised to be selected as a finalist in the trade services section of the awards. Mr Antonello, who is an electrician, and Mr Alabakis, a mechanic, said going into a business together was “an easy decision” because they get along so well. “Since we are a new business, any business that we get is really exciting,” Mr Antonello said. “I also just enjoy seeing the different jobs which the lifts are used on.”
Mr Antonello and Mr Alabakis said they would encourage young people who wanted to set up their own businesses to have faith in themselves. “If you’ve dreamt it, definitely give it a go,” Mr Antonello said. Park push in the picture A Point Cook resident has renewed her push to establish a pop-up park. Susan McIntyre has applied for a Neighbourhood Project grant to fund a pop-up park at the Point Cook Town Centre over Christmas and summer. Ms McIntyre, who is keen for the temporary installation to be located at the restaurant end of Murnong Street, has commissioned an artist’s impression of what the pop-up park could look like as part of her submission. The image shows synthetic turf, oversized umbrellas providing shade for a number of tables and chairs, and potted plants. Ms McIntyre called on Wyndham council to allocate $50,000 in its 2017-18 budget towards the park’s set-up, but was unsuccessful. The council instead offered to help Ms
McIntyre apply for the Neighbourhood Project grant, which shares $100,000 among a number of joint council and community initiatives aimed at breathing new life into local spaces. Ms McIntyre’s idea is inspired by a pop-up park in Ballarat Street, Yarraville. The park was introduced as a temporary installation in 2011 and became a permanent feature in 2014 due to popular demand. Speaking to Star Weekly in June, Stockland Point Cook centre manager Frank Pizi said the centre was always looking for new ideas. “We encourage community organisations and council to get in contact with their suggestions on how we can collaborate and activate the town square,” Mr Pizi said. Working through Council’s Economic Growth Department, Council has played a key role with Government, the WynBay Local Learning and Employment Network, LeadWest and local schools in developing the Implementation Plan which will ultimately see the $10million construction project completed by mid 2018. Councillors and I are optimistic this new facility will broaden secondary and post-secondary education options for growing the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics skills of young people here in Wyndham. Play date for toy library The Little Buddies Toy Library will host a Stay and Play open day at its Point Cook branch on Friday. The toy library is a non-profit community service based in Werribee and has a range of more than 1700 toys suitable for infants to five-year-olds. The library gives families of babies and preschoolers affordable access to safe and age-appropriate toys, which can help children learn through play. The library also has two sets of sensory toys, designed for children with special needs, which were donated by the Point Cook branch of the Country Women’s Association. The free Stay and Play event will offer interactive play for youngsters, along with an
opportunity to meet other families and find out about the toy library. Toy borrowing will be available to library members during the event. New life for new year’s festival By Charlene Macaulay The organisers behind this year’s Chinese New Year and Lunar Festival in Point Cook have vowed to come back bigger and better next year after securing a Wyndham council grant. The Point Cook Cultural Community committee was one of 30 programs, events and not-for-profit groups in Wyndham to share in $560,000 of council funding recently. PCCC president Bob Fairclough said the $12,000 community strengthening grant
would enable the festival committee to hold a much bigger event compared to this year’s offering, which attracted an estimated 15,000 people in its first year at the Point Cook Town Centre. “The committee is hopeful that more people will attend the 2018 festival given that there will be more exciting performances showcasing Chinese culture, many information marquees and two performances of the lion dance,” Dr Fairclough said. The 2018 festival has been slated for February 24 next year.

Other projects to receive a council grant include: • WEstjustice’s couch surfing Myki project, which works with local schools and government to give Myki cards to local homeless kids so that they can travel to school without incurring a fine;
• The Wyndham Edge Cultural Leadership project, which will host a series of theatre workshops for culturally diverse young people; and • An after-school cooking program that will teach kids how to prepare a healthy breakfast. Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said more than 120,000 people had participated in projects or events funded by the grants program since it was launched in October 2014. “This year’s grants program … will help to make a tangible difference in our local community,” Cr Barlow said.
Rabbitohs bounce back They’re the little rugby league club that could. Three years ago, the Truganina Rabbitohs had 40 kids on their roster. Today, the club boasts more than 150 players across a range of ages and 60 volunteers. What’s more, nine of their female players have qualified for the NRL Victoria women’s state team, one young player was recently selected for the Victorian under-12 team, and both the club’s mens reserve grade and womens first grade teams remain undefeated this season. Club president Joe Laga’aia put the club’s success down to the sense of community they had created among their players, volunteers and supporters. “Our vision is to be a pillar in the community so that we can empower people, enrich lives and grow the game of rugby league,” he said. “The number one thing for us is to create a positive culture around the club.”

Moves were initiated last week to establish a Community Health centre for Werribee Shire. The meeting, called by Werribee Association, elected a provisional committee to investigate all aspects of the subject.
The Werribee Council has supported an application by CSR Readymix to re-zone Bailey’s Land in Wyndhamvale which will allow the establishment of a quarry 2.5km from houses. The decision came after a heated debate in the Werribee Council chamber last Monday week with councillors Glenn Clark and Julian Menegazzo arguing against the findings of a consultants report into the effects of quarry blasting at Wyndhamvale.
The eyes of the nation were on Werribee on Monday night as police were at the ready for the worst at the launch of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party. A team of 202 police ensured the volatile crowd did not repeat the type of violence which erupted at the Dandenong rally last week.
Last Wednesday, Truganina couple Paul and Kay Oakes received the best news they could have hoped for. After 18 months of enduring more than 50 bouts of chemotherapy, radio therapy, a marathon operation and pain hard to imagine, their 14-year old son Patrick was declared in remission from a rare form of cancer which was expected to kill him within three months of diagnosis.

MY WYNDHAM If you’re a Werribee South resident, chances are you know Marisa Berton. Ms Berton has lived in the region for 20 years and is vice president of the Werribee South Ratepayers Association. This year, the business owner was also selected to be on the community advisory committee for the youth detention centre. She tells Charlene Macaulay the full story. What is your connection to the Wyndham area? I have lived in Werribee South for 20 years and had been visiting my husband’s family, who lived in the market gardens area, for 10 years before that. We moved to Wyndham for family and work-life balance … and to be close to family. I loved the local surrounds, the beach and the relaxed rural lifestyle. Tell me about your family. I grew up and went to school on the eastern side of Melbourne and then studied architecture at RMIT and urban design overseas. My mother and father immigrated to Australia in the 1950s with only a suitcase of belongings and the promise of a prosperous land. They both came from large farming families from the Abruzzi region of Italy in the Apennine mountain range. We ate from an extensive homegrown vegie patch, dad raised rabbits, and chickens for eggs and meat, and composting was the norm for us. We were self-sufficient and dad fixed
everything, even our school shoes when the soles wore out. We ate a Mediterranean diet, preserving homegrown produce and salt curing meats that didn’t need refrigeration. It wasn’t something I was proud of so much at the time as a growing teenager, however now I find myself seeking those same cultural traits and enjoying the satisfaction of the whole food process. You’re vice president of the Werribee South Ratepayers Association, and were recently appointed to the Youth Detention Centre Community Advisory Group. Why is it important for you to be actively involved in your community? Strength of community is something I was fortunate to grow up with, helping each other and sharing stories and cultural traditions … Ratepayers of Werribee South to me is an extension of this concept in our rural community. I was selected to be on the Youth Justice Redevelopment Project Community Advisory Committee along with three other community
members. Now I’m hoping to contribute to the discussion regarding the building of the project, the local surrounding landscaping and social outcomes for our community. You’re also a business owner, tell me about your business. My business was established as a home-based business in Werribee 15 years ago in the area of architecture and urban design. Over the last four years I established a Werribee-based office designing local residential and commercial buildings. This year I have taken long service leave to concentrate on further education in community leadership and council’s district advisory committee – rural. What are your hobbies outside of work and volunteering? Walking along the beach at Werribee South and cooking for my family and friends are hobbies I enjoy, along with my love for visiting many Melbourne and Geelong food and craft markets on the weekend.

If you could change one thing about Wyndham, what would it be? To advocate for the potential of a Food Region right here in the west. I would love to see locally produced products and locally grown vegetables available in a vibrant market environment for our community and for the many Melbourne tourists that visit this great city as a tourist destination. Perhaps located in East Werribee’s enterprise precinct as a buffer to the farming precinct. It would create local employment and bring locally grown food close to our growing population.

April sun in Cuba Photographer Michael Rayner fulfils a lifelong dream of visiting an island nation locked in time
C
uba, that defiant Caribbean island nation standing isolated against its goliath neighbour, is poised to have its rather unique status on the world stage changed forever. This preserved-in-aspic 1950s time capsule of a country has always intrigued me, as it holds up a looking glass to the values and ways of the past. As the long-shuttered nation embraces a newfound popularity with travellers amid the
recent easing of US embargoes, I felt an urgent need to visit before Cuba evolves into yet another beige tourist destination. So when the opportunity came to travel there in April with a small group from the Cuba-Australia Cultural Alliance, the time was ripe. The group’s mission was to take broken violins and other bits and bobs of musical instruments, to enable Cuban luthiers and musicians to cobble together playable
instruments. There is nothing that Cubans enjoy more than music and dance, but the five-decade-long US blockade has deprived them of the money and components needed to indulge in their favourite pastime. Over 23 days travelling around the island, I spent many a night over a mojito, or four, learning – in broken English and childlike Spanish – how to tap congas to Cuban beats, to the encouragement and laughter of our hosts.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reckons he’s found Melbourne’s best Malaysian … We enjoyed our visit to Ya’Salam when the premises were being used to operate a Somalian eatery – though, truth be told, it was a bit too much of a drive to become a regular haunt. Now there’s new management in the place. They’ve retained the name – and even a page of Somalian food at the back of the new menu … but the rest is all about terrific Malaysian food. In fact, based on two visits, we reckon this is some of the best, cheapest and most authentic Malaysian food you’ll find in all of Melbourne. And word appears to have gotten out – we note with assured pleasure the happy, hungry tables of customers on our visits. Chicken laksa ($10) is unlike any I’ve eaten – and as good as any, too. The chicken is so finely shredded that it’s pretty much subsumed into the gravy, but that’s fine when the soup base is so funky, house-made and delicious. Protein oomph is provided by two hardboiled egg halves, and there’s plenty of cucumber and other vegie bits to provide texture and crunch to go with the fat, short udon-style noodles. Roti canai ($5) is a wonder. Accompanying a just-right bowl of runny chicken curry (with a dob of sambal paste) are the two lightest, flakiest and best flatbreads of the Malaysian style we’ve ever eaten. Simply – wow. Char kuey teow ($10) is a bit like our laksa – unlike any we’ve before tried. This one comes in a bowl and – appropriately

No problems, though – because while the wok hei factor is predictably muted, there’s no doubting the flavours and all-round yumminess. Given the obvious real-deal vibe of everything served us thus far, we are keen to try the Ya’Salam satays. They’re unavailable, though, so we happily settle for two fine curry puffs ($1 each). Again, these are a far cry from your usual curry puffs. The rich short pastry is stuffed with an extremely toothsome jumble of chicken mince and vegetables. They could’ve been a tad hotter, however. The Ya’Salam food we’ve tried has been really fine. We’re usually not much concerned about notions of authenticity – but they have heaps of it here. Next time, we’ll be sure to try one of the many nasi goreng variations. WHEN LIFE (OR MUM) GIVES YOU LEMONS I must admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of putting vegetables into cakes. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the idea of having a chocolate cake with beetroot or sweet potato in it. But that all changed when I discovered this lemon and zucchini cake. I had a bucketful of lemons from my mum’s tree that I was keen to use and the little flecks of green through this cake looked really appealing. The addition of zucchini gives this cake a wonderful, moist texture and it’s very easy to throw together. A friend dropped around just after I’d made it, and she gave it a double thumbs up!

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? MB: I’m not an amazing savoury cook, but I’m not too bad at making sweet stuff. I don’t have a lot of patience and just want to eat amazing food NOW, so I’d rather leave it to the experts, like my mum or an eatery. FB: What is your signature dish? MB: A vegetarian and mild version of chill con carne that’s smothered in cheese and sour cream for dinner and Nutella cheesecake for dessert. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MB: Entree – pastizzi (Maltese pasty filled with ricotta), curried egg sandwiches and cheesy garlic bread. Mains – pizza, pesto pasta, nachos, salty chips with aioli and a toasted cheese sandwich. Also, being vegetarian and having food intolerances, I can’t actually eat and enjoy what’s on screen. I used to like Ainsley Harriott and the Two Fat Ladies, but more so for their personalities and banter.
LEMON AND ZUCCHINI CAKE 1¼ cups caster sugar 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 eggs One third of a cup of milk 2 tbs lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 cups plain flour 1¼ tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 1½ cups grated zucchini 2 tbs lemon zest Preheat oven to 180C. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl and stir together. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar and olive oil. Whisk in the milk, then add the lemon juice and vanilla and stir to combine. Add flour mixture and stir until just combined. Fold through the zucchini and lemon zest, pour into a lined loaf pan and bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. For the glaze, mix together 1 cup of icing sugar with about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and drizzle over the top.

Environment Protection Act 1970 Works Appr Approval Application Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria has received the following application to issue a works approval or licence which permits work to be undertaken which will result in a discharge of waste to the environment or an increase or alteration in an existing discharge. 1002260 Wyndham City Council (WCC) 45 Princes Highway, Werribee Victoria 3030. The proposal is for the development of its existing landfill at 470 Wests Road, Werribee. The proposal was advertised during December 2016 and January 2017 with the comments closing date on 7 February 2017. EPA held a public conference on 14 March 2017 to give the public opportunity to voice their concerns. Following the conference EPA served WCC with requests for further information based on concerns raised at the conference and from submissions. EPA has now received the further information from WCC, available on www.epa.vic.gov.au/our-work/licences-and-approvals/ public-participation/featured-applications/wyndham-landfill. A drop-in information session will be held on Tuesday 1 August 2017 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Eagle Stadium, 35 Ballan Road, Werribee. Residents and interested persons are invited to learn more about the proposal and WCC’s responses to concerns raised, about the works approval process and how to make submissions. WCC and EPA representatives will be available to answer questions and WCC will give a brief presentation at 7pm outlining their response. Jets fight for scrappy win By Lance Jenkinson It was not a masterpiece for Point Cook fans to marvel at, but Saturday’s 3-2 win over rivals Truganina Hornets in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west local derby at Arndell Park Reserve was hugely effective. Not only did the Jets take out bragging rights over their neighbours, they obtained a crucial three points from a game that looked destined for a draw late on. Jets coach Craig Filer was thrilled with the result as it keeps his second-placed side within two points of ladder leader Sebastopol Vikings. “It wasn’t one of the best games we’ve played all season, but we’ll take the three points,” Filer said. “Truganina are playing their hearts out, they’ve got a big seven games ahead to stay in the league, and I said to [Truganina coach] Serge [Lunedei] after the game, they’re not a bottom two side, there’s worse sides in the league. “They put up a good performance and made life difficult for us, but we got the win. “Three points is three points at this stage of the season and it doesn’t really matter how they come as long as they come.” Point Cook was the dominant side in the first half. The Jets scored twice to lead 2-1 at half-time, but should have been out of sight with a number of other gilt-edged chances either missed or saved. Standing in the way of the Jets was Truganina goalkeeper Dylan Tiatto, who made save after save to keep the underdog Hornets in the game. “To be fair to their goalkeeper, he pulled off some fantastic world class saves today,” Filer said. “On a different day, with a different goalkeeper, it would’ve been a different story.” A one goal lead was never comfortable for Point Cook. Filer warned his players at the break to expect Truganina to come hard at them in the second half. On cue, Truganina’s Zac Busuttil produced a wonder goal, equalising with a bicycle kick. “If you don’t take your chances in the first half, you’re just going to put yourself under pressure,” Filer said. “I said to the guys, the first five minutes they’re going to come at us and it’s exactly what happened and they scored the equaliser.” It took Point Cook until the 85th minute to get its match-winning goal. IN THE DOGHOUSE anyone in power at any junior sports competition in the west is thinking of capping scores and not recording personal achievements, let me be clear – this writer is totally against it. Kids know the scores, even when they are having a muck around at Auskick, let alone in a proper game. What are we protecting them from? Participation is very important, but sport is about winning and losing. You learn a lot from both in sport and life in general. I see too many kids who love winning but go to pieces when they get beaten. That is a product of bad coaching and bad parenting. Shielding kids from the pain of losing is a bad thing and a false world. If you keep sport in its true perspective for kids, then losing a football, soccer or netball game is not the end of the world. Maybe parents need to re-assess their expectations and just let the kids play.

women’s footy is the fastest growing part of the game, it is good to see that participation of blokes above the age of 35 is healthy as well. Super Rules, lovingly known to many as Super Fools, gives the old blokes a chance to have a kick with their mates knowing that their opponent is probably feeling as creaky and ancient as they are. sad to report of the passing last week of two life members of the Western Bulldogs. Robbie Leitch, trainer during the ’80s and ’90s, and David McTaggart, one of the founders of the East West Coterie Club, both succumbed to their battles with illness. Robbie was old school and part of a memorable crew that included Ben Bradley, Bruce Wilkinson and Jack McGovern (all deceased) who were the very fabric of the club at that time. David and his late wife, Maree, were passionate Bulldog supporters who lived in the east and welcomed players and officials into their house over the years when the East West Club held functions in that part of town. What could have been a disastrous day for Hoppers Crossing turned out to be one of its most memorable of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 season. Titans pile on eight late goals to take home the points Tarneit has sent a reminder that its best football is good enough to match it with the top sides in the Western Region Football League division 3. The timing was perfect for the Titans to get the scalp they have so long desired, taking down neighbours Wyndham Suns by 45 points in the local derby at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday. Titans football manager Adam Taylor said it was always sweet to beat the Suns, but the four premiership points were the sole focus for a side that wants to remain in the hunt for a top-two finish. “Yeah, the rivalry is there,” he said. “You can’t deny there is a will to win against a side that is only two or three kilometres away. “Really today was just about getting a good win against a top side.” Tarneit has been a flat track bully this season. The Titans record against the other top four teams – ladder-leader Parkside, Wyndham Suns and Sunshine Heights – was a dismal 1-3 before the weekend. Their only victory against big four opposition
came against Sunshine Heights back in round one in a game that was called off after half-time because of lightning. But Saturday’s win over Wyndham, the form team of the competition, was full of merit. Tarneit went into the last quarter trailing by five points, having scored a solitary behind in the third quarter, but produced a scintillating eight-goal-to-nil last term to run out big winners. “I think it was our best quarter for the year,” Taylor said. “It really kicked in some self belief and confidence, which has been lacking. “A quarter like that shows we can do it against good sides.” Thomas Robinson kicked four goals for Tarneit. Young gun on target By Lance Jenkinson Thomas Armstrong is on a fast track to success in the sport of shooting. The 17-year-old’s first competition was less than three years ago, but he has already represented Victoria at the national championships and Australia on the international stage and is one of Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club’s most promising youngsters. “I seem to have progressed in the sport pretty quickly,” Armstrong said. “I owe that initially to my parents – they’ve taken me to a lot of competitions, which I think has improved my scores.” Armstrong was in Wagga Wagga last week as part of a development program. Among the most promising shooters in the land, the Plumpton resident received instructions from Suzie Balogh, a gold medal-winning Australian Olympian, and a number of other high-ranking shooters. “We’re learning all about techniques that might help us and the mental side of it as well,”
he said. “The mental side is more than half of it. You make too many mistakes when you get nervous, so it’s good to learn that side of it, too.” Armstrong has already proven to have a steady hand and sharp eye in major competitions. Selected in the Australian junior down the line team after impressing at the national championships for Victoria, he won a team gold with two other shooters at the World DTL Championships in Ireland last year. This year, Armstrong has done well for Victoria at the Australian National Trap Championships, which the Big V won with a perfect score of 250 out of 250. Armstrong placed third at the Junior National Champion of Champions after one measly point cost him. There were no such worries at the National Single Barrel event as he became the youngest ever to win the title. In the National Points Score competition, Armstrong finished with a combined score of 298/300, including single barrel, double barrel and points score total. It was the highest junior score and second highest overall.
Armstrong’s greatest honour so far is being named captain of the Australian junior team for the World DTL Championships, which will take place in Wagga Wagga next year. In the meantime, Armstrong will focus on his second Australian team call-up when he competes at the World Universal Trench World Championships in France next month. In the next 12 months, Armstrong will begin his transition into Olympic events. “That will give me a better opportunity to be able to make the Commonwealth or Olympic teams,” he said. “That’s my main goal – to be able to represent Australia on the highest stage, and that would be the Olympics.” Armstrong is the July nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Armstrong will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

In the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League, a Louise Thomas-led Tarneit secured its first win, beating Glen Orden by three points, while Manor Lakes beat Pascoe Vale by 59 points.

Club champion Dom Dudkiewicz claimed victory in the seventh round of the Footscray Cycling Club’s winter road season at Balliang on Saturday. Dudkiewicz powered off the front on the second lap and rode solo to the line. The Melton resident measured his efforts to keep the bunch at arm’s length, crossing the line 10 seconds clear, with Andrew Bonello taking the bunch sprint for second and Jason Costin third.
