Safety fears soar A surge of violent crimes has Tarneit and Truganina residents living in fear. Star Weekly has spoken to several residents, who asked not be identified because of fears for their safety, who say they are afraid to leave their homes after dark. One resident, who was attacked by a group of up to 10 youths while jogging in a Truganina park on May 19, said he feared he would die in the attack. “I was in a war-torn place for the last few years,” he said. “I thought when I came to Australia that it would be safer – now I have got to re-think that.” A Tarneit resident, who lives near the Ecoville Community Park, said youths who frequented the park often engaged in anti-social behaviour. “We’ve seen them with bats, knives and a taser,” he said. A woman said her family was still traumatised after an aggravated burglary at their Truganina home in July last year in which five youths allegedly hit her husband several times with a hammer. The woman said many residents in the area were feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhood. Residents are calling for more police in Wyndham, stricter sentencing for offenders and additional initiatives to engage with at-risk youths. Neighbourhood Watch Tarneit chairman Rishi Prabhakar said the group had joined with the Heartlands Residents Committee to host a security forum on Sunday. He said the forum, which will be attended by Wyndham police, would give residents ideas about how to be safe.

Inspector Martin Allison said police were “particularly concerned” about “high-victim impact crimes” such as aggravated burglaries and carjackings. “With respect to the aggravated burglaries in Tarneit and Truganina, we’ve already deployed additional resources to those areas,” he said. Inspector Allison said more police officers had been placed on night shifts to allow for an increased response and presence. Wyndham safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said the council was in regular contact with groups such as the Maori Wardens and the South Sudanese Wyndham Patrol in efforts to engage with disaffected youth. The security forum will be held from 2.30-3.30pm at Club Heartlands, Tarneit, on Sunday, June 4.

The world at her feet Werribee teenager Laura Younger has been named as one of three state finalists in the Miss World Australia competition. The trio were selected out of 40 entrants who took part in a Melbourne event last month. Ms Younger, 19, said her sister entered her “as a joke”. “But then I actually got in, I was so surprised,” Ms Younger said. She said she had decided to fundraise for Variety, the Children’s Charity as part of her Miss World Australia campaign. Ms Younger, who is studying a bachelor of nursing at university, said she also hoped to pursue a career in modelling. The next round of the competition will be on June 7. Building jobs in Truganina By Alesha Capone A western suburbs-based business will build a new $9.8 million manufacturing plant in Truganina. Unipod owner Jason Wylie said construction on the Foundation Road factory would start soon and is expected to take up to 12 months to complete. As part of its expansion, the Derrimut-based company will take on 92 new employees, with 85 of those positions suitable for former
automotive workers. Mr Wylie said the company hoped to start recruiting more staff to work on the factory floor soon. Unipod has secured a grant under the state government’s Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) for the expansion. The LIFT fund gives grants of up to $2 million to businesses which can create new jobs in areas affected by the closure of automotive manufacturing. Minister for Industry and Employment Wade Noonan announced the grant while

in Derrimut on Friday. “We are proud to support Unipod so they can expand their operations in Melbourne’s west and create local jobs for local workers at a time when they are most needed,” Mr Noonan said.
Unipod manufactures expanded polystyrene waffle pods which are used to build concrete slabs for new homes, extensions and commercial industrial buildings. The company’s Truganina plant will produce structural insulated panels to be used in wall, roof, floor and civil construction projects. Mr Noonan said the LIFT program had also given a grant to the TFI Group (Total Fleet Imaging) in Laverton North, to create eight new jobs and expand its signage operations.

A “longest lunch” and “longest dinner” took place at the schools, with food from different nations. Students dressed in traditional clothing from around the world and talked about their family histories. Cultural performances and dancing also took place. Shadowfax Winery will be closed for about a fortnight following a blaze in its kitchen early yesterday morning. Werribee CFA’s Darryl Wells said firefighters were called to the winery about 7am on Tuesday and found part of its kitchen on fire. Fellow CFA member Mick Davie said the fire had spread to rows of empty display wine barrels. It took a team of five tankers, three pumpers and a rescue unit about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. No one was in the premises at the time of the fire and the cause of the blaze was not known at the time Star Weekly went to print. Mr Davie said about 10 per cent of the kitchen was damaged. In a statement posted on its Facebook page yesterday, Shadowfax said the business was likely to be closed to the public for a couple of weeks. “Fortunately, the fire brigade got it under control quickly and are currently assessing the cause, and extent of the damage,” the statement read. “Thanks for your kind thoughts and well wishes.”

Coles finds a rising star A Werribee baker will have her creation rolled out at Coles stores across the country. Jacqueline Croft wowed judges at Coles’ first national bakery awards with her six-pack of mini cheese and bacon rolls with margarita sauce so much that her recipe will be used in Coles bakeries from July. Ms Croft, who has spent the past five years working in the bakery at Coles in Hoppers Crossing, was nominated for the competition after she started the Coles Skilled Baker program in March this year. “We were at the awards night, and they announced that mine would make it to stores on July 17,� she said. “It’s great. The reason I made them is because they’re my son’s favourite.�

Money from an outer suburb growth tax is bankrolling land purchases for two key pieces of infrastructure in Wyndham. A state government spokesman said money from the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) had been allocated to buy land for an ambulance station in Manor Lakes and land to build a new primary school in Werribee South. Sites for both projects have yet to be determined. The spokesman did not specify how much GAIC funding had been spent on Wyndham projects to date, but a state government media release reveals that the government has allocated $11.8 million from GAIC’s building new communities fund, and $22.2 million from GAIC’s growth areas public transport fund, statewide over 2016-17 to date. Since 2010, the state government has collected the GAIC tax from developers in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. In turn, the state government must spend the money collected on key infrastructure projects, such as schools, hospitals and public transport. The announcement comes a month after the state opposition highlighted a recent Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning report that revealed the state government had only allocated $1.16 million from a $30.5 million GAIC funding pool in Wyndham. Wyndham council city economy director Kate Roffey said the council was working with DELWP to “achieve better outcomes from GAIC funding�. “Council would like to see substantial amounts of the money used to address major transport related issues identified by Wyndham,� she said.

Tarneit switch ‘illogical’ By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham resident is furious with a council proposal to switch funding priority for a new sport reserve in Tarneit to another estate. Daniel Dietrich, who has owned a parcel of land in the area for the past 30 years, said he had been blindsided by the council’s proposal to prioritise construction of the Riverdale South Active Open Space site. That site, located between The Grove and Newgate estates in Tarneit, is now favoured over that of the Riverdale North Active Open Space site, which is located between Grand Central estate and Riverdale Village.

The council says that because of rapid growth in the area, it wants to fast track construction of the south reserve so that the project is completed within the next four years, rather than according to the original 10-year-plus timeline. Construction of the north reserve has been slated for development within the next five to 10 years. Mr Dietrich branded the move illogical, saying that 930 housing lots had already been sold in the area surrounding the north site, while less than 50 lots have been sold near the south site. “We’ve got a concern from a landowner point of view, and believe residents in the area will have a similar concern, that a reserve that was meant to be next in line is now being

delivered after the southern reserve, which is in the middle of nowhere,” he said. Wyndham economy, innovation and liveability acting director Peter McKinnon said the council had received minimal feedback from residents regarding the proposed change, with only three emails having been received to date.
“Council has not made a final decision in relation to which Riverdale Active Open Space sites will first be constructed,” he said. “All submissions received will be reviewed before a final decision is made. “A total of 525 lots have been sold – or will settle within the next month – in the area around the southern site.”

New park taking root The state government has released further details about a new park being planned for Wyndham. This month’s Victorian budget included $20.5 million for new parks in Wyndham, Kororoit Creek and Cranbourne. Last week, a spokesman for the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the Wyndham park would be about 340 hectares. He said the park would be in Wyndham Vale at the northern part of Presidents Park, extending northwards across the Werribee River. “Wyndham Vale is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing outer suburbs and the Labor government has identified the need for more parks and open spaces to sustain the needs of a thriving population,” the spokesman said. “It [the park] will significantly improve the liveability of Werribee and provide another important social and recreational space for the Wyndham Vale community to enjoy. “These parks are aimed at improving the liveability in each respective area while also supporting local biodiversity.” Ms D’Ambrosio said the announcement about the new parks was “fantastic news for our suburbs”. aming a street, arena, park, medal, trophy or building in honour of a particular person can be fraught with controversy, as we have witnessed in the case of tennis legend Margaret Court. Will this bring new criteria into the process of selecting who gets something named after them? If so, it might read something like this: If you want a lasting legacy of a building, street or whatever named after you, you must only have opinions that are shared by the majority of the public (or at least those members of the public that use social media as a modern day judge and jury). Margaret Court did not commit a crime, she merely expressed an opinion on a very volatile subject. Whether you or I agree or disagree with her is immaterial. I have no doubt it will bring changes to naming criteria, but I hope we will not see bodies such as our council start waiting until someone dies to bestow such honours. I suspect this will become more the norm because the dead can’t voice opinions that may embarrass.

The Court debate must have had some of those in local council scurrying to check if a Wyndham park or street is named after someone who may turn out to be a loose cannon. From a commercial point of view, marketers will be thrilled if people’s names disappear, because it will mean sponsors won’t have to share equal billing with legends or folk heros. I was critical of council naming the sports centre Eagle Stadium and the events centre Encore, but maybe they made wise choices. I hope that having an opinion does not stop someone from being considered – or, in the case of Margaret Court, having an honour revoked in a publicly belittling way.

Wyndham council has cleaned up rubbish dumped on vacant land in Dover Street, Truganina. City operations director Stephen Thorpe, said the land was owned by the state government, but the council had removed the rubbish along the site’s fence and footpath “in good faith”.

Council drives parking plans By Charlene Macaulay An off-street carpark in Werribee’s CBD will be shut down by the end of the year to make way for a multi-million dollar high-rise carpark, office and retail precinct. Geotechnical drilling has begun at the off-street carpark on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road, one of four council-owned ground-level carparks that will be converted to high-rise complexes in a bid to rejuvenate the heart of Werribee.
Wyndham council city economy acting director Peter McKinnon said a planning application for the carpark – dubbed the Gateway site – was expected to be lodged within the next few months. Mr McKinnon said the carpark, which includes 70 public and 34 permit spaces, was scheduled to close in November this year to make way for the development, with parking to be made available at the back of the former Bridge Hotel. “The development of the Gateway site is
being undertaken by the Pelligra Group, with construction expected to start later this year,� he said. “The Gateway development will include shops and cafes on the ground level, offices at upper levels, public and private multistorey parking, and either serviced apartments or a hotel. “The height of the development, along with its value, will be determined as part of the planning application process.� Pelligra chief executive Paul Pelligra told Star
Weekly in November last year that the Gateway site would have 400 more carparks. The council has entered into a public-private partnership with the Burbank Group and Pelligra for the $250 million revamp of the four sites. Up to 600 jobs are expected to be created from the four developments, with the final plan including 1400 new parking spaces (private and public), 5000 square metres of office space, 300 apartments, 100 serviced apartments and 2500 square metres of retail and cafe space.
Hitting the right note There’s never been a better time to jump on the band wagon. Werribee Concert Band is starting up a training band and is calling on beginners – including people who have never played an instrument – to give it a go. The band is hosting a free come-and-try day this Thursday, where budding band members of all ages can try out a number of instruments before officially starting up the training band the following Thursday. Corrina Busby said the training band, which will cost $10 per school term plus instrument hire, would teach members how to read music and play basic notes. “It’s for people who have just started to play an instrument, or are at a very basic level, and it’s a really cheap way to start learning an instrument and get into a band setting,� Ms Busby said. At 84, John Kessner is the oldest member of the Werribee Concert Band, and says the
training band is a great way to get started, or to brush up on your skills. The trombone player, who has been playing since he was 15, joined one of Werribee’s training bands after a playing hiatus, then moved up the ranks to the performance band. “It was a refresher for me because over the years they’d changed ‌ trombones were traditionally played in the treble clef, and most of them play in bass clef now.â€? Wolf hunts Wyndham election Meet the man in charge of the investigation into the 2016 Wyndham council election. Earlier this month, chief municipal inspector David Wolf announced the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate would be interviewing all 95 candidates over allegations of bribery, unlawful nomination and deceptive conduct during last year’s election campaign. Charlene Macaulay sat down with Mr Wolf to find out more. What prompted the investigation? In the course of the election period we had a number of issues brought to our attention … one of the most stark issues for us was the number of candidates for the municipality. If you compare it to across the state, there was a general ratio of about four candidates per vacancy, and in Wyndham it was more like 10 candidates. Why has the inspectorate deemed it necessary to interview all 95 candidates? We felt it was important to speak with all candidates and get a full picture of what had occurred, and that’s to do two things: to see if the issues are more widespread, and also to exculpate or clear the genuine candidates. It’s very important that the genuine candidates are acknowledged for that and aren’t discouraged for either standing for office in the future, or if they are in office, for remaining in office.
What gaps are you talking about here? Where there’s opportunity for people to nominate unlawfully – perhaps the ease for that to happen. And some of the issues around people that have found themselves in this process and weren’t fully aware that they were part of the process. Werribee tops station crime By Charlene Macaulay Nearly half of all crimes committed at Wyndham train stations in the past five years have taken place in Werribee. Figures from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal that a total 1417 offences were recorded at Wyndham’s five train stations – Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Williams Landing, Tarneit and Wyndham Vale – and surrounding carparks between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2016. Werribee station was the location of 657 of those crimes, including 299 deception offences, 110 instances of property damage, 67 assault and related offences, and 186 thefts, including thefts of and from cars, bikes and other goods. There were also 169 public order offences, which can include weapons and explosives offences, disorderly conduct and public nuisance. Hoppers Crossing recorded the next highest number of offences (396), including 143 thefts from motor vehicles, 35 instances of property damage and 50 public order and security offences. Bicycle thefts dominated train station crime at Williams Landing, with a third of the 180 offences detected relating to stolen bikes. Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations, which opened in June, 2015 as part of the Regional Rail Link, recorded 97 and 87 offences respectively after opening. One man, who does not want to be named but who is a founding member of Tarneit Neighbourhood Watch, said that since Tarneit
train station opened there had been a rise in crime in the area. “In the last two years, the public transportation came and the crime came,” he said. Last week, the state government announced that Protective Services Officers, who man train stations every night from 6pm to the last train, would be given new powers to target anti-social behaviour and crime at stations.

In particular, PSOs will soon be given the power to arrest a person who has breached their parole, conduct searches for illicit drugs and request details from people who have witnessed a crime. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing were among the first stations to get PSOs in 2012, while Williams Landing received them in April, 2013. Tarneit and Wyndham Vale were staffed with PSOs in March last year. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the expanded powers would help make train stations safer at night. “These measures will ensure that PSOs have the appropriate powers, are in the right places, and working at the right time, to respond to crime hotspots across Melbourne’s public transport network,” she said.

Truganina solar move is all class By Alesha Capone

A Truganina business has installed a super solar system, thanks to an agreement with Wyndham council. Class Plastics, a plastic container manufacturer and distributor, has signed an environmental upgrade agreement (EUA) with the council, the Sustainable Melbourne Fund and a bank, allowing the company to install a 365-kilowatt solar panel system at the building it leases. Most homes with solar panels have two-kilowatt systems installed.
Class Plastics co-owner Daniel Carapellotti said the business had been located in Truganina since 2010. He said the new solar system, consisting of more than 1300 solar panels, was erected at the factory in February. Mr Carapellotti said the company hoped signing the EUA and installing the solar system would save power and improve its environmental credentials. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus described the signing of the EUA as “momentous”.
“By installing a massive 365-kilowatt system, Class Plastics in Truganina will generate an average of almost 480,000 kilowatts in renewable energy every year,” Cr Marcus said. “This is enough to power 97 homes.” The council is encouraging other businesses in Wyndham to find out if they are eligible to take part in an Environmental Upgrade Agreement for projects such as solar panels or energy efficient lighting upgrades. Cup leads the field By Charlene Macaulay The Werribee Cup will be the season opener when horse racing returns to the Werribee Racecourse this year. Werribee Racing Club will kick off its 2017-18 calendar with its most popular meet on December 10, followed by a Christmas Eve race day and five other meetings in the first half of 2018. Racing club general manager Glenn Scott said he was pleased with the dates the club had
been assigned. Mr Scott said the season was pushed back slightly due to a later than usual Spring Racing Carnival, during which time international horses are kept and trained in Werribee. As a result, the Werribee track won’t be up to scratch for racing until December. “Cup day’s track conditions are of the highest priority,” he said. “We’ve got three Sundays, two Saturdays, a Friday and a Thursday – they’re good dates for the club. It is a challenge to get people here on weekdays, so we have every opportunity to
promote to people who have weekends off to come along. “We pitched to try and get some more weekend dates, and we achieved that.” Mr Scott anticipates the club will also pick up an extra race meeting or two, having done so in the past two seasons. The club cannot hold race meetings between September and mid-November because of quarantine restrictions, with many international horses stabled at the international quarantine centre.

Housing site a sell-out More than $11.5 million of property at a Point Cook development has been sold in one weekend. The CIRQ townhouse project, located near Dunnings Road, Murnong Street and Lawler Street, is the first medium-density housing project from Development Victoria and includes 104 homes. Development Victoria, a state government authority responsible for urban renewal and development, released 23 CIRQ homes for sale on May 13. The two- and three-bedroom homes, priced from $429,000 to $538,000, were available from 9am at the CIRQ display suite in Point Cook. Twenty-two of the homes were sold on that day, with the final townhouse selling the next day. Total sales were more than $11.5 million. Development Victoria’s development and construction general manager Peter Southwell said the response to the project had been “extremely strong”. “We were confident that new, high-quality homes right next to the town centre would be popular, and to sell out stage one in 48 hours is a great result,” he said. Paul Ciprian, a director of Oliver Hume, which is marketing the CIRQ project, said its proximity to the Point Cook town centre, education and community amenities had drawn families to the area. Rotary ready to roll From teeing off to high tea, Werribee Rotary Club is pulling out all stops to help fit out Werribee Mercy Hospital’s new critical care unit. The club, which hosted a golf day fundraiser earlier this year, raised $20,000 for the CCU and has already promised the proceeds of its 2018 golf day to the campaign. It will also host a high tea later this year, with a portion of the proceeds to go towards the CCU. For Werribee Rotary president Robert Fava, supporting the CCU is a no-brainer. “Rotary’s theme for this year has been engaging community,” Mr Fava said. “So under my year what I’ve done is try to do as much as we can for the local community, and still do things abroad. “We all know Werribee is the biggest growth corridor in Australia … but we still have this
huge void when it comes to basic health care.” The CCU is part of an $85 million state government-funded hospital upgrade that will include eight critical care beds, 56 inpatient beds and six operating theatres over four storeys at the northern end of the hospital, above the Catherine McAuley Centre. The hospital will be six storeys once works are complete. Earlier this year, the Werribee Hospital Foundation and the Mercy Health Foundation created an appeals committee to raise $2 million over the next 18 months to fit-out the new critical care unit. Three firemen threatened with deregristration by their union have been promised full support by the State Government. The three men, all members of the United Fire Fighters Union, have been told unless they stop working as volunteers at Werribee they will be deregistered.

Hoppers Crossing father Anil Singh Hanse hopes a memorial he will attend in Canada this Saturday will close a dark chapter of his life. MY WYNDHAM Kate Goodwin, who lives in Point Cook, is the chief executive and director of nursing of the future St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee, which is being built in Hoppers Lane. She talks to Alesha Capone.
Council has released pictures of what the redeveloped Point Cook Community Centre will look like and if you’re curious you can see them by searching for Community Learning Centre Upgrades on our website. We’ve committed to upgrade three centres in Point Cook, Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. The Point Cook redevelopment recognises that the population has increased by more than 20,000 since 2011. You can already do lots of things at your local centres like catching up with neighbours and friends, learning a skill as well as paying your rates, registering your pet or submitting a service request. These upgrades will mean we can trial other services from these buildings and we are also considering bringing Council meetings to these local centres. The redevelopment of the Point Cook Community Centre will mean there will be some changes to our services available. The Maternal Health and Child Services will relocate appointments to other centres during June and July. The Library will close on 23rd June and reopen on 17th July, 2017. There will be no changes to the Kindergarten services. We will soon see construction start at Point Cook with the project expected to be finished by the middle of 2018. Regards, Henry Barlow.
What do you enjoy most about your role at St Vincent’s Private? St Vincent’s Private is a fantastic organisation to work for, they are faith-based and so are grounded in those values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence. It’s great to be able to see those in action and shape those from the ground up in a new project. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s very exciting to help shape that culture. Can you tell us about the progress of the hospital project? It’s actually a hospital and an aged care service, which are on the same site, but are run by two different divisions of St Vincent’s Health Australia, which I don’t think many people know. The aged care building is finished and they will be taking their first patients as of next week.
We hope to open in the last quarter of this year and we will deliver our first babies in February 2018. When the hospital opens we will have 49 beds, three operating theatres and a catheterisation laboratory, which is where you get cardiac studies done that are non-invasive. It’s quite exciting actually because currently people in Werribee need to travel out of the area to either Footscray, Geelong or over the bridge to access these services.

What other medical services will be based at the hospital? The hospital will be a bit of everything to everyone. It will have orthopaedics, urology,
general surgery, ear, nose and throat services, sleep studies, rehabilitation and oncology services. Of course we will also have a busy maternity service supported by our special care nursery.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revisits hot jam doughnuts – a street food tradition Like everyone else, I loved Nick and his Olympic Doughnuts. Or rather, in this case, I really loved the idea of Nick and his doughnuts – that he was and is such a legend, and that Olympic Doughnuts was such a Footscray institution, even surviving the revamp of Footscray station. I thought the doughnuts were OK, but found the jam they were stuffed with amounting to not much more than, well, syrup. This, as a pal has pointed out to me, is a ridiculous attitude to hold. She’s right – this was not your hipster cafe selling vanilla cream-stuffed doughnuts for $5. These were your street-food doughnuts – cheap, fresh and hot. Well now, Nick has retired – and much to the community’s widespread delight, a new doughnut operation has taken up the space at the station. So I take it for a spin. The doughnuts are … cheap, fresh and hot – although the jam is, well, syrup. Or perhaps it is the rather high cooking heat that transforms any jam into … sticky lava. It matters not. I do good through a deal that provides me two doughnuts and a pretty good coffee for $5. And on a sunny Indian summer’s afternoon, the station plaza has become a fine place to linger a while, watching the ebb and flow. There’s a bench seat directly opposite the doughnut shop – the convenience store next door even had a couple of tables and chairs out.

During a period of growth in Melbourne’s west, developer Kataland’s visionary Underbank project, a 166-hectare community in Bacchus Marsh, has been well received in the local community. Kataland development manager Allan Carlsson says that since Underbank’s launch last June, about 95 per cent of the first two stage releases have sold, with stage 3a launched ahead of time to meet demand. Marksx Group Pty Ltd (ACN 098 520 828) proposes to develop approximately 35 hectares of the Robinsons Road Employment Area South Precinct in the Melbourne suburb of Truganina, approximately 18 km west of the Melbourne CBD, Victoria. SPORT Tame Tigers’ woeful form continues Altona creeping up in the rear view mirror. Wyndhamvale has problems of the worst variety – relegation danger. The Falcons have just one win in seven games to remain second-last on the ladder nearing the mid-point of the season. Conceding six goals to nil in the first quarter did not help the Falcons cause in an 84-point loss to Altona at J.K. Grant Reserve on Saturday. Wyndhamvale has an important game against fellow one-win side St Albans at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday. The winner will gain some much-needed breathing space over bottom side Caroline Springs, while the loser will spend another week looking over its shoulder. In division 2, Manor Lakes had a resounding 54-point win over Albanvale on the road at
Robert Bruce Reserve. The third-placed Storm scored in excess of 150 points with James Farrugia and Ty Priest kicking five goals apiece and Ethan Henley producing a best-on-ground display. Manor Lakes will face second-placed Yarraville-Seddon in a blockbuster at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. In division 3, Wyndham Suns routed Sanctuary Lakes by 80 points at Featherbrook Reserve, with Steven Neralic bagging six goals in a best-afield display. Warriors nail a solid win By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing is hitting its straps in Western Region Football League division 1. The Warriors put their sketchy form behind them with a 43-point upset win over ladder leader Spotswood at McLean Reserve on Saturday. It was a welcome return to form for the Warriors, who went into the game on a two-game losing skid and in danger of slipping out of the top five. Warriors coach Steve Kretiuk was delighted his charges put their inconsistent habits behind them. “All in all, we played a good four quarters of footy, probably for the first time this year,” he said. Hoppers Crossing was in total control from the outset. The fast-starting Warriors led by 14 points at quarter-time and stretched that out to a nigh on unassailable 38-point gap by the half. There was plenty of junk time in the second half as the Warriors withstood the Woodsmen’s fleeting comeback attempts. “When they were starting to get some sort of momentum back in the game, we were pretty good at stemming their flow and holding on to the game,” Kretiuk said. “To our boys’ credit, they played a consistent brand of footy.” Hoppers Crossing was stout defensively, restricting the usually free-scoring Spotswood to 43 points. The Woodsmen had averaged a mammoth 156 points a game in the previous three rounds. Corey Muscat led the way defensively for the Warriors – he was given the duty of marking Spotswood danger man Nayef Hamad. “He was running through the midfield and was supposed to play on [Dylan] Callard,” Kretiuk said. “Then Nayef got out of the loop and had a really dominant six or seven minutes in the first quarter, and would’ve had 10 touches in the first half of that quarter. “So we put Corey on him and, to his credit, he took him out of the game.” Mitch Palma produced his best game for Hoppers Crossing. Palma is one of the Warriors’ hardest working players in the midfield, regularly blowing up the GPS. “We put a GPS on some of the players and his numbers are through the roof compared with some of the other players,” Kretiuk said. “I don’t think anyone comes anywhere near what he runs in a game of footy. “His efforts aren’t 30 to 40 metres, they’re 100-metre efforts.” Kretiuk was thrilled with the performances of new recruits Daniel Nielsen and Jordan Staley. 72 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 31, 2017
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ No wonder footy fans are a confused lot. AFL fans of six clubs (including the Bulldogs) get this weekend off for the bye, while VFL fans had last weekend off for the state game and suburban footy fans can look forward to a weekend off over the coming Queen’s Birthday weekend. Players missing games in local footy due to weddings seems to be at an all-time high, and the overseas summer holiday exodus is about to kick in. In a way it is good to see life still takes precedence over what is, after all, a game. ■ Local
football has become more professional in recent years. I have seen first-hand a massive change in the way clubs handle the media. A decade ago, getting a team sheet on match day was almost impossible, and then it was a work of fiction. There is still a small percentage of clubs who live in the dark ages and think we are there with them. There are no secrets any more in footy. Social media has seen to that. Team changes, injuries and player movement between clubs is all on Twitter and Facebook before it appears on any official news source. Why some clubs persist in playing mind games amazes me. Promote your club and your players. That is your obligation as officers of the club.
■ Some big decisions coming up for local cricket with Cricket Victoria unveiling its new geographical plan for cricket, with five metro zones. The Subbies have not embraced the proposal, with the threat of going solo. The bottom line is making participation easier and less stressful for everyone. Cricket is a time-consuming game, and spectators have embraced the shorter version of the game at the elite level. Sometimes tradition has to make way for the needs of the next generation. ■ James Condos has turned back the clock this season in front of goals for Deer Park. In recent years Jimmy has been helping with coaching as his body just would not let him play to the standard he demanded. This season he has 33 goals from seven games and is well on track to have the Andrew Gibson Medal at season’s end. James won the WRFL Rookie award when he was a teenager playing for Parkside. He was drafted by the Bulldogs but injury curtailed his ambitions. His father Nick is coaching Parkside where another big name – Jason Cloke – is heading the division three goalkicking with 37 goals.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Werribee Districts in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Tigers have been uncompetitive against finals contending teams over the past month, losing heavily to Altona (59 points), Sunshine (63) and, the biggest margin of all, defending champions Deer Park (95), at John McLeod Oval on Saturday. Patience and a late show nets Hoppers Crossing victory It was a case of “better late than never” for Hoppers Crossing coach Shaun Barbara and his players after a 2-0 win over Geelong Rangers in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 at Grange Reserve on Saturday. The Reds certainly left it late, scoring twice in the last five minutes to come away with three points that keep them in top two. Fab Albuquerque jr finally broke the deadlock in the 86th minute, before substitute Musa Kamara scored a penalty sealer from the spot in stoppage time. Barbara always had faith Hoppers Crossing would eventually score. The Reds had done most of the attacking throughout the game on the back of strong midfield play from Andrew Ruiz, Kwaku Dade and Daniel Sweeney. “We’ve certainly got belief that we’ve got goals in us,” he said. “Geelong came well organised, well prepared and I thought defensively they were really good. We kept going forward and playing the style that we wanted to play.” The first half was full of Hoppers Crossing attacks. The Reds’ advances were denied time and again by a rigid Rangers defence.
The Rangers had their moments on counter-attack and could well have taken a lead if not for a fine double-save from Reds goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt. “That could have changed the complexion of the game completely, but he did really well to keep that out,” Barbara said. Hoppers Crossing was one of the most free-scoring teams in the competition in the earlier rounds, but perhaps it made a rod for its own back. The Reds are now coming up against sides that have a defence-first mindset and are not easy to break down. Barbara pleaded with his team to remain patient in his half-time address. He did, however, implore his players to move the ball a bit quicker and work harder off the ball to create more chances. “I think that probably coincided with how Fab got in to score,” Barbara said. “There were a couple of good passes and good movement off the ball, which opened up a pocket of space and he was able to break through.”
Kamara’s game sealer came on the back of a penalty, which he earned for himself. The former Truganina Hornets striker was taken down by Rangers defender Ashley Knowles, who received a second yellow card. Hoppers Crossing remains second on the ladder, two points behind rivals Altona City. The Reds will be keen to keep the pressure on when they host Essendon United at Grange Reserve on Saturday. In state league 4, Point Cook remains on top of the table after a 1-0 win over Bell Park at Saltwater Reserve. James Varsamakis scored the only goal for the game in the first half. Truganina Hornets thrashed Melton Phoenix 4-1 at Arndell Park with Senanu Oforikumah, Zach Busuttil and Abu Sillah getting on the scoresheet. Devils return fire By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Devils awoke on Sunday morning in the doldrums as the remnants of what had transpired the night before sunk in. Before a shell-shocked home crowd, the Devils were upset 85-71 by lowly Hawthorn Magic at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night, leaving a bitter taste in their mouths. The good news for the Devils is they had a chance to atone the next day on a double header weekend and they responded with an impressive 97-87 win over Hume City Broncos on the road at the Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium. It was just what the doctor ordered. “It’s hard to drop one at home and they would’ve liked to have played better last night than we did, but to come back today and win a game on the road is certainly pleasing,” Devils coach Michael Czepil said. “I’m proud with how they dealt with last night and came out and played the way they did.” Jeremy Smith was electrifying for Werribee with an efficient 40 points on 15-from-24 shooting and seven rebounds. The US import continues to impress with his willingness to fit into the team environment and take constructive criticism on board. “He genuinely listens to myself and the staff,” Czepil said. “He doesn’t think he’s above or below anyone else, so he takes on board the coaching and that’s why he’s helped us become a better team this year. “He can get all the numbers – the points, assists and all that stuff – but there’s also the winning side of it and he’s about winning.” Youngster Blake Allison produced his best game for Werribee. The teenager had a real presence with 23 points, including five threes, and 10 rebounds. “He shot the ball well, he was more aggressive and that’s something that we’ve been speaking about,” Czepil said. “I have to always remind myself, he’s a 19-year-old kid. “He’s got a strong body and he looks like he’s older than 19.” Werribee is in the midst of a nine-day stretch that could shape its season. The Devils have double headers on consecutive weekends, meaning they will play four games in nine days. Czepil will be asking his players to dig deep, but is mindful of the fact they are not full-time professional basketballers. “It’s a very professional week for a bunch of amateur basketball players,” he said. “These guys are playing four times in nine days and then also have two practices this week. “These guys are working nine-till-five and busting their back to get from work to practice and practice to home to see the family.

hough Peugeot got plenty right with the original 2008 crossover, it freely admits some elements were wrong. The brand did an admirable job anticipating the trend for compact SUVs, beating many rivals to market when the city SUV, based on the 308 hatch, arrived in 2013. But key ingredients weren’t quite right – the entry-level model was available only as a five-speed manual, other variants were saddled with an old four-speed auto. Peugeot has reworked its line-up for 2017, replacing a choice of two transmissions and three engines with a single 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol motor mated to a six-speed automatic. Finding that the majority of baby SUV buyers were avoiding cut-price models, the brand added extra features to its 2008 Active entry point, which has climbed from $21,990 (manual) to $26,490 plus on-road costs. The new entry-level car features a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, single-zone air-conditioning and 16-inch alloy wheels. But it doesn’t have autonomous emergency braking, which is reserved for the next rung up. Customers prepared to pay $30,990 can get into a 2008 Allure, which offers 17-inch alloy wheels, sat nav, self-parking and dual-zone climate control. The top-line 2008 GT-Line uses the same engine as lesser models. The $32,990 price gets you cosmetic upgrades. On the inside, the 2008 persists with Peugeot’s odd ergonomics framed around a tiny, low-set steering wheel and highmounted driver instruments that can be

obscured by the controls. Front occupant space is more than passable, but rear room is a little tight. While much of the 2008 remains unchanged since it first arrived, the 2017 model’s engine is now a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol motor borrowed from the 308 hatchback. It offers a charming thrum with more character
than regular four-cylinder engines, but can grumble and shudder under load at low revs. The 2008 offers confident road-holding and decent composure in the bends. It doesn’t ride quite as well as we’ve come to expect from Peugeot and the little engine can feel stressed when pressed. Like many examples of this breed, the 2008
offers little to recommend it over a similarly priced conventional car such as Peugeot’s excellent 308 hatch. The Project The West Gate Tunnel formerly known as the Western Distributor (the Project) includes: • upgrade and widening of the existing West Gate Freeway by two lanes in each direction between Williamstown Road and M80 interchange generally to provide overall capacity of six through lanes each way and auxiliary lanes as required, widening of the Princes Freeway between the M80 and Kororoit Creek Road, collector-distributor carriageways, elevated ramps, structures and surface road connections including new ramp connections to and from Hyde Street; • two bored tunnels catering for three traffic lanes in each direction under Yarraville which include a road tunnel ventilation system, tunnel portals and ventilation structures • bridges across the Maribyrnong River connecting the tunnels with twin viaducts above Footscray Road and connections to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink, Dynon Road and extension of Wurundjeri Way to Dynon Road and widening to Flinders Street • improvements, extensions and upgrades to the existing pedestrian and bicycle network, as well as the creation of new public open space areas and relocation of services. The Western Distributor Authority (WDA) is managing the Project on behalf of the Victorian Government. The EES The Victorian Minister for Planning declared on 18 December 2015 that an EES is required for the Project (then known as the Western Distributor Project) under the Environment Effects Act 1978. The Minister for Planning redeclared the Project on the 17 May 2017 for the new project name. The EES process will inform decision-making on the Project under Victorian legislation. How to make a submission Interested persons and organisations are invited to submit comments on the EES, the draft Planning Scheme Amendment and the Works Approval application by 5.00pm on Monday 10 July 2017. As this is a joint advertisement, comments on the draft Planning
Scheme Amendment and the Works Approval application and its supporting documents are to be made as a submission on the EES, even if comments only relate to the draft Planning Scheme Amendment or the Works Approval application. All submissions must state the name and address of the person making the submission. Submissions will be treated as public documents. Inquiry hearing process The Minister for Planning will appoint a joint Inquiry and Advisory Committee under the Environment Effects Act 1978 and Planning and Environment Act 1987. The Inquiry and Advisory Committee will review the EES, draft Planning Scheme Amendment, Works Approval application, public submissions, and investigate and consider the environmental effects of the Project in accordance with Terms of Reference approved by the Minister for Planning. The Inquiry and Advisory Committee will convene a public information session during exhibition of the EES, draft Planning Scheme Amendment and Works Approval application on Friday 16 June 2017. At this information session, the WDA will outline the content of the EES, draft Planning Scheme Amendment and Works Approval application. A Directions Hearing will be held on Wednesday 19 July 2017 commencing at 10.00am at Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street, Footscray. At this hearing, the Inquiry and Advisory Committee will establish the necessary arrangements and a timetable for public hearings. Public hearings are expected to commence in the week of Monday 14 August 2017 and run for a period of approximately 5 weeks. Requests to be heard by the Inquiry and Advisory Committee must be made at the time of making a submission through the online form or submission coversheet. All submitters wishing to be heard before the Inquiry and Advisory Committee are asked to note these arrangements and commence preparations in advance.
