En pointe for challenge Some of Australia’s best young dancers descended on Werribee last week for the In Motion performing arts challenge. The four-day competition included 350 dancers between the ages of four and 17 competing across a range of genres, including classical ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop. Wyndham dancers performed strongly at the event, with Kira Mitchell from Wyndham Vale taking out the senior jazz championship and Wyndham Vale’s Destini Elliot-Damon winning the junior classical championship. Other winners included Tayla Bozelle from Somerville, who won the junior jazz championship, and Ballarat’s Scarlett Nash, who won the senior classical championship. Event director Ros Barratt said the competition, now in its third year, attracted entrants from all over Australia. “It started out as something little that we thought we would do for the local kids … It’s become a massive event,” she said. “We’re genuinely thrilled to host the competition in the heart of Werribee. “We have a fantastic group of dance schools and families who thoroughly enjoy being part of our friendly not-for-profit competition.” Charlene Macaulay

Ambo rollout fast-tracked By Charlene Macaulay Manor Lakes has its own paramedic team, and a new ambulance. A team of 14 new full-time paramedics and their vehicle have been fast-tracked to Wyndham, more than 18 months before their new station is due to open. The new 24-hour team, which started last week, will be based at Werribee ambulance station until construction at the new Manor Lakes base wraps up. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said the organisation is still scoping a suitable location for the new 24-hour station, with a site to be selected in the next month. The Manor Lakes station is due to be operational by

late next year. In the interim, Mr Walker said Ambulance Victoria is delighted by the arrival of new paramedics. “It’s wonderful to see these resources [rolled out] as quick as they have been, which means we’re out there from this week supporting this community and other communities out there in the state,” he said. The rollout is part of a $500 million plan to improve ambulance response times, and includes the recruitment of 450 new paramedics over three years, commissioning more ambulances and 15 new and upgraded stations across Victoria. As part of the plan, Brimbank and Footscray will be home to two of six new ambulance super response centres, which will deal with major

Population a growing challenge By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has labelled the area’s fast-growing population as “a major challenge”. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) last week released new figures that show Wyndham experienced the third-highest increase in population among Australian municipalities in the 2015-16 financial year. The ABS data shows there were 222,656 people living in Wyndham at June 30 last year, an increase of 5.7 per cent on the previous 12 months.

The figures also revealed Point Cook’s population increased to 50,774 during the 2015-16 financial year, in which more than 3500 new housholders moved into the suburb. This gave Point Cook the fourth-highest population increase among Victorian suburbs and towns. Tarneit and Truganina were sixth and seventh on the list respectively, with more than 2800 new residents each. As a result, Tarneit’s population swelled to 36,961 and Truganina’s to 23,222.

Wyndham city economy, innovation and liveability director Kate Roffey described the rapid population growth as “a major challenge for Wyndham”. “The biggest difficulty is aiming to ensure that the development of essential supporting infrastructure – road and rail, schools, hospitals and sports facilities for example – keep pace with population growth,” she said. “Council works closely with the state and federal governments to advocate for Wyndham’s fair share of funding.”

State opposition population policy spokesman Tim Smith said Werribee MP Tim Pallas did not care about growth within the Wyndham area. But Mr Pallas said that while the Liberals were in government for four years, the thenplanning minister, Matthew Guy, “did nothing for Wyndham” as its population grew. Mr Pallas said that in contrast, the Labor state government had invested in a critical care unit for Werribee Mercy Hospital, a revamped Werribee police station and new schools for Point Cook, Tarneit and Werribee.

Twenty-one years ago, Jonathan Lipnicki made his silver screen debut playing the cute kid in Jerry Maguire. Next month, he will share the secrets of the acting craft over three weeks at the Actor’s Studio in Werribee. Kevin Hillier says council meetings are a comedy resource

f I was a stand-up comedian, I would be delighted with the news that our council meetings are being live streamed on the net. What a goldmine of material awaits as we watch and listen to our 11 elected representatives in the ultimate reality show. There is no script and, as we all well know, there is no plot. Amazingly, 84 people watched the debut episode and more than 200 caught it later on Youtube. Obviously, there were no dogs doing somersaults or cats juggling cutlery videos available that week. What could be more entertaining than watching two councillors arguing about a rezoning application or a robust debate about a nature strip dispute? Hide the remote if they venture into waste collection issues. The day-to-day business of council is pretty mundane and bureaucracy is hardly the stuff of which Hollywood blockbusters are made. I am being flippant about this, but I do see some upsides. Instead of fining litterbugs and jay walkers,

make them sit through videos of council meetings. That will keep them on the straight and narrow. Seriously though, it is another form of accountability and that is not a bad thing. It may have reversed the tardy attendance record of one councillor, and the bad dress sense of several others (joke â€“ sorry, I could not help myself). The former though is not acceptable and leads me to my next point. If you canâ€™t or wonâ€™t do your job as a councillor â€“ and that includes turning up â€“ then step aside. The essence of being a councillor is representing the people who voted for you (and those that didnâ€™t), being a part of the decision-making process and a leader of the community. No matter how good you think you are, you canâ€™t do that if you donâ€™t show up. The current council is not perfect, but it seems workable, efficient and capable of getting the job done â€“ and that is all we, as ratepayers, can ask for. â–

Action looms over late rates By Charlene Macaulay About 12,000 Wyndham property owners have fallen behind on paying their rates. Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal that Wyndham council is owed about $14 million in rates arrears, with financial hardship and unemployment among the most common reasons given by residents who fail to pay. Wyndham ratepayers copped a 2.5 per cent increase on their rates bill for the 2016-17 financial year, in line with the state government’s rate capping edict.

And a rate cap of two per cent has been set for the 2017-18 financial year. Pensioners receive a rebate of $218.30 on general rates, and $50 on the fire services levy. City transformation director Steven Lambert said the council has taken legal action to recoup unpaid rates, but only after property owners fail to respond to communication. “Generally, we make at least six separate requests for payment before starting legal action,” Mr Lambert said. “It’s important to note that council has a policy to work with ratepayers experiencing financial hardship.

“Council allows residents to set up payment arrangements and, by applying for hardship consideration, they can have part of the rates payment deferred, and legal costs or penalty interest costs waived,” he said. “Details of local financial counsellors are also provided as part of this service.”

But Denis Nelthorpe from community legal centre West Justice said Wyndham council was relying on “old fashioned, Dickensian methods” to chase up property owners owing unpaid rates and fines. Mr Nelthorpe said the council’s methods were unsympathetic to people who were in genuine difficulty. “Council makes no attempt to differentiate between home owners who are in rates arrears, and possibly in financial difficulty, and investors who don’t want to pay their rates until they’ve sold their property,” he said.

It’s easy to see why Julie Toner was named Wyndham council’s 2016 citizen of the year. The Hoppers Crossing resident, who last week notched up her 29th consecutive year manning the phones at the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal, is also a tireless fundraiser for the Cancer Council and Bowel Cancer Australia. Earlier this month, she helped raise just under $10,000 by taking part in the Wyndham Relay for Life team. This was the second highest amount of first home owner grants claimed from among Victoriaâ€™s postcode areas. Postcode 3977, which takes in the eastern growth suburbs of Cranbourne, Skye and three other nearby areas, pipped the west to the post, with 898 first home owner grants issued. The 3030 postcode, which includes Werribee, Point Cook, Quandong and Cocoroc, placed sixth, after prospective residents lodged 336 successful applications. Since 2013, eligible Victorians have been able to claim a first home owner grant of $10,000 from the state government to purchase new homes valued up to $750,000. Ms McCarthy said. She said there was still a significant amount of competition in the marketplace, with both first home purchasers and investors attending auctions in the area. â€œBut in saying that â€“ at a lot of the auctions we conduct, first home buyers seem to be the winning buyer, knocking out the investors,â€? she said.

A new logistics hub at Truganina is gearing up to bring as many as 2000 new jobs online. Earlier this month, Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan went along for the official launch of the Drystone Industrial Estate on Foundation Road. Mr Noonan described the 95 hectare hub – which is a joint venture between the Charter Hall Group and Commercial and Industrial Property – as an “outstanding industrial estate”. The $440 million centre is already home to a Woolworths meat processing facility, warehouses for Target and The Reject Shop, Laverton Cold Storage, Rand Transport and Couriers Please. Mr Noonan said these businesses have employed 1200 people so far. Charter Hall Group’s managing director and chief executive David Harrison said construction at the new hub was about “55 per cent complete”. He said the group hopes the entire estate will soon be filled, with 400 jobs being created during its construction. Ready to pass the baton Do you have what it takes to be a baton-bearer? Wyndham residents have less than a month to nominate a local legend to carry the Queen’s Baton when it passes through the city on February 13 next year. Integral to the build-up for each Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton Relay started its global journey at Buckingham Palace last month and will travel through every Commonwealth nation and territory before landing in Australia on Christmas Day. From there, the relay will spend 100 days traversing the nation as it heads to its final destination, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. The Games are declared officially open when a message inside the baton from the Queen of

England is read aloud at its final destination. Mayor Henry Barlow said only a handful of Wyndham locals would have the honour of carrying the baton through their home town. “Whether it’s a local athlete, a volunteer, your family doctor, or just someone whom you think deserves to be recognised for their contributions to Wyndham, nominating them to carry the Queen’s Baton is the perfect way to honour them,” Cr Barlow said. Baton bearers must be at least 10 years old as of December 25 this year, be an Australian citizen or resident and have made a significant contribution to their community. Nominations close on May 15. Hair’s a great fundraiser Whether she is at the register or behind the deli counter, Woolworths’ employee Alena Young is a familiar sight to many customers at Pacific Werribee. But next time you see her, she might look a bit different. Last week, a crowd gathered to watch as Ms Young sacrificed her hair to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Ms Young had set herself a $10,000 fundraising target. The Pacific Werribee Woolworths store was also hoping to raise at least $30,000 for this year’s appeal. Ms Young’s efforts paid off, bringing the supermarket’s total fundraising sum to $40,106.

“I feel really good and I’m so proud of the store and the community,” Ms Young said. She said the Woolworths store had also hosted several fundraising trash-and-treasure markets, selling items donated by customers. “Hotel520 in Tarneit held a trivia night and the Big W girls donated items too – it was a real community effort,” Ms Young said. “I would like to say a special thank you to all our customers.” She also thanked her Woolworths’ co-workers Joe, Chloe, Helen and Elaine for supporting her fundraising efforts. Laurence Binyon composed this celebrated poem, the fourth stanza of which is recited every Anzac Day, as he sat on a Cornish cliff-top looking out to sea. It was written in midSeptember, 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of World War I as the British Expeditionary Force was suffering casualties at the Battle of Mons, the Battle of Le Cateau and the First Battle of the Marne. Laurence said the lines from the famous stanza were the first that came to him. Too old to enlist, he worked as a medical orderly for the Red Cross. He lost his brother-in-law and several close friends in the war.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Jewels and gems of the world crown a family dynasty Back in the days when treasures shipped from overseas arrived in tea chests, Frank Duff was always thrilled when beautiful, often rare, pieces arrived at his St Arnaud shop. Sometimes he’d unwrap delicate porcelain figurines; other times parcels of loose precious gemstones, sourced during his explorations of the world. MY WYNDHAM Katinka Kernutt is a creative woman with many talents. The graphic designer, photographer and jewellery maker lives in Werribee. She runs a small business called Studio Katinka, which includes a line of Melbourne-inspired jewellery and homewares. She speaks with Alesha Capone. What do you like most about living in Werribee? It obviously gives me space to do stuff, such as have my own studio. Where I walk, in the older style part of Werribee shopping centre, I call it a country-style strip where there is a butcher and fruit and vegetable shops, where you can buy quality groceries and fresh produce, where part of the appeal is supporting local businesses. There are also nice cafes down there. The space is good for our two boys, and it’s also only 33 kilometres to the city. How did you develop such an array of skills?

I studied science photography at RMIT University and then did a masters in multimedia. I went freelance after having my first son, and since then I’ve worked part-time, mostly with women, to support small businesses. In addition, I do visual branding, photography and graphic design to help small businesses create consistent visual impacts. Can you tell me a bit about Studio Katinka? I’ve been running Studio Katinka for nearly two years. I have a Melbourne range, which is all about taking tourist souvenirs and making wearable fashion out of them. On one side of a piece of jewellery or homewares, I will have a tourist-style photo and the other side will have a fashionable geometric pattern.

I’m also about to start a Brisbane range. What areas feature in your jewellery pieces? I am in the process of working out how to add something from the Werribee Park district

or the west into the range. At the moment, it basically features the Melbourne CBD and the bathing boxes in Brighton and Mornington. It’s about taking things around you … making a fashionable piece out of them … with patterns and geometric shapes.

SPORT Hot-shots flag WRFL’s winning intentions The Western Region Football League is hellbent on making it consecutive victories at the AFL Victoria Community Championships. The WRFL has named a star-studded initial squad of 50 players for next month’s clash with the Northern Football League. The squad includes Barry Priest Medal winners Kwame McHarg (Deer Park), Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing), Matt Dean (Werribee Districts), Chris O’Keefe (Albion) and Tim Jenkins (St Albans). The strong representation from last year’s division 1 grand final clubs Deer Park (11) and Hoppers Crossing (10) – 21 players in all – shows how serious the clubs and players are about showcasing the best WRFL talent. Despite his new responsibilities as coach of

Spotswood, Anthony Eames is remaining in charge of the WRFL side this year. Eames, who spearheaded the league’s thrilling three-point win over Ballarat Football League at the Victoria University Whitten Oval last year, is excited to be working with the WRFL’s top talent again. “We have brought together a good mix of youth and experience,” he said. “We have a great blend of leaders from across the WRFL. “The players we have picked are the mainstays of our competition and we are certain that the spirit generated by this group of players will be positive.” The WRFL’s rich playing stocks will be further boosted by returning players Jason

Cloke (Parkside), Wayne Patak (Spotswood) and Steven Kennedy (Altona). Cloke, a former Collingwood player, kicked nine goals on debut for Parkside, while Patak and Kennedy have been dominant midfielders in the short time they have been at their respective clubs. “If Cloke is in good form, he can be as damaging as anyone, and both Patak and Kennedy are home-grown WRFL juniors who have won premierships for their respective clubs, so to have them involved will be exciting,” Eames said. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It will be a sad day for racing fans this Saturday when Williamstown’s Greg Miles retires as the No.1 Victorian thoroughbred race caller on RSN. Greg is one of the best we have ever had and we have had some pearlers – Bill Collins, Bert Bryant, Joe Brown and my own colleague, Bryan Martin, rate right up there. Greg’s career has included a remarkable 36 Melbourne Cups, including the Makybe Diva treble that prompted the now world famous phrase: “When a champion becomes a legend”. I have always been a huge fan of Greg and his calling. He is a very unassuming man who downplays his world-class gift. He will still be involved in the racing industry, but racing fans like me will miss his dulcet tones coming through the television and radio. Enjoy your retirement, Greg. ■ Even Rod O’Connor would admit he is a grumpy so-and-so at times. Let’s be honest – most of the time. But even he was smiling when recently presented with life membership of the Western Region Football league. The expression, “once a Parksider, always a Parksider”, sums up Rod’s dedication and passion for his football club. He arrived as playing coach in 1976 and since then has dedicated himself above and beyond the call of duty for the Parkers. The former Werribee ANZ bank manager has ruffled a few feathers along the way, but you can never deny his heart has always been in the right place. ■ Phillip Henderson, Adrian O’Donnell, Alan Parker, Noel Crump, Michael Gilbert, Daryl Jeffries and Dennis Lazaridis were also made WRFL life members under the 300-game provision introduced by the league a few years ago. Long-distance ambitions By Lance Jenkinson Julia Bourke could not have chosen a better time to leave our shores in pursuit of sports and academic excellence. The up-and-coming Western Athletics hammer thrower and shot putter lined up a sports scholarship with Illinois State University in the US last year, but since the Redbirds – as the ISU sports teams are nicknamed – signed Bourke, it’s fair to say her star has risen even higher. Bourke is coming off standout performances for Victoria on the national stage in the under-20 section at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney this month. The Werribee resident took out gold in the hammer throw and silver in the shot put. It was the first place in the hammer throw that turned heads. Bourke has taken the event seriously only for the past two years, mainly because of the pleading of coach Fernando Canepa, a top hammer thrower in his day, that she give it a go. “It was amazing to win because I’ve only been doing hammer properly for two seasons,” Bourke said. “Fernando was a hammer thrower

himself, so I didn’t have much of an option but to throw hammer, but it took him a bit longer to convince me to do it. “Once he did, it has almost become our main event.” Bourke is still raw in athletics. The 18-year-old, who trains at WestVic Academy of Sport’s Bacchus Marsh campus, has years of development and learning to come before she reaches her career peak. That is not stopping her from dreaming of representing Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Bourke’s performances at the nationals did her prospects no harm. “The 2018 Commonwealth Games are really a stretch target,” she said. “It’s such a strange feeling sitting at training seriously discussing my legitimate chance of qualifying. “It’s going to depend on how much I can improve before December.” Bourke, who is studying for a bachelor of science degree, majoring in nursing, will arrive in Normal, Illinois, the home town of Illinois State University, later this year. She was impressed with the facilities on a tour of the campus during her enrolment.

The NCAA college sports competition will provide much tougher competition for her than what is available in Australia. “There’s no way I’d be able to have the same sort of access to the facilities and competition that I will have over there if I stayed here,” Bourke said. “I was talking to my coach the other day, and we were looking at some of their results … the distances that I’m throwing [that] put me in those top rankings in Australia wouldn’t even put me in the top 25 in America. “The level of competition is something we couldn’t even imagine here. “It will be amazing to push yourself because you’re going to have that competition day in and day out to compare yourself against.” Bourke is the April nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Bourke will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

■ I was lucky enough to be taken for a walk through the building site that is Avalon Airport Oval @ Chirnside Park last week to get a feel for how the redevelopment is going. After months of looking at drawings on paper, it was quite an eye-opener to see the new home of the Werribee Tigers taking shape. The size was what struck me first – it is enormous. While it will be home to the football and cricket clubs, the opportunities for the community to benefit are significant.

Once the turbo is spinning, the motor is responsive and fast, and it’s beautifully matched to a continuous variable gearbox with eight presets. Give it some gas and it sounds great too. And there’s handling to match; it sits square and solid through the bends with no shudder or skip. The cost is a hard and sharp ride. Officially this is Bilstein suspension, but your family will come up with other names when you encounter any road that’s not freeway smooth. The solution? The cheapest Levorg, the GT at $47,294, gets the same engine but softer springs. But if you’re into sporty driving, you won’t find anything at the price to touch the GTS.

was aware of the hard ride right up until I got into the driver’s seat and then, wow, you realise why. The handling is terrific. It sticks like glue and feels solid throughout. And the seating is nicely comfortable and excellently supportive to hold you firmly, no matter how high the cornering G-forces rise. There’s instant acceleration and power delivery that, while quite linear, comes on with a whoosh. There’s something compelling about having instant power, and bags of it. It put a smile on my face. The GTS brings leather seating as well as the navigation, sunroof and the EyeSight safety package, which includes blind spot warning and a rear cross-traffic alert among other things. The interior is well finished and nicely trimmed. There’s wood detail and red upholstery stitching throughout. Rear seats fold quickly and easily to give a flat cargo floor. OK, so maybe the ride is hard and there’s noticeable cabin noise, especially over rough surfaces, but in the end this is a practical wagon that drives like a sports car. Good fun.
