Fireworks faze fireys Christmas and the new year may be behind us, but Werribee fire brigade is still warning residents against setting off illegal fireworks in the lead-up to Australia Day. The brigade was kept busy over the festive season, responding to a fire sparked by fireworks, which burnt through a fence and into a farmer’s paddock. First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said the brigade’s prompt attendance stopped the fire from becoming a serious blaze. “With most of the local grasses now 100 per cent cured, fires can quickly spread and become quite large in a very short period of time,” he said. Mr Wells also warned against any open fires at celebrations during the fire danger period (until April). Gas and electric barbecues can be used outdoors, even on total fire ban days, but solid fuel is forbidden. Youth gangs ‘intolerable’ By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s top cop has hosed down concerns over large groups of youths congregating around Tarneit, despite an MP labelling the situation “intolerable”. Responding to incidents involving youths attacking cars and patrons at McDonald’s in Tarneit and surrounding streets, acting Inspector Damien Madden took to Facebook last week to say that, despite call-outs to about five incidents “of note” in recent weeks, there had been little criminal behaviour. The post followed at least two incidents at McDonald’s Tarneit last month, the first on December 15 involved a group of up to 40
youths attacking cars and patrons, the second was a brawl involving up to 150 youths on the night of December 18. Police have so far charged one teen from the eastern suburbs with assault. The teen has been bailed on condition he does not return to the Wyndham area. Police are also investigating reports of criminal damage, after recent call-outs to general duties police, highway patrol, detectives, the dog squad and air wing. Acting Inspector Madden said police had recently expanded patrols around Tarneit, with plans to step these up further. He said he is aware of rumours of groups of Sudanese youths travelling by train from Dandenong
and congregating at Tarneit McDonald’s. “We’ve got some people from the other side [of the city] meeting friends that meet over here, it’s a natural thing … but it’s not driving the issue that we have in Tarneit. “We’ve had some criminal damages reported, we’ve had an assault, and that’s probably the extent of it. “We get reports of youths congregating and hanging around … we go there, we speak to them, we try to move them on. “The main issue for us is actually community reassurance … what we’re doing is putting efforts in to having more police patrols in those areas, to make sure that the community feels comfortable.”
But Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn branded the situation “intolerable”. “There is no excuse for this sort of intimidatory, and I think violent, behaviour, because I’ve spoken to people who have been attacked, I’ve spoken to people who have had their cars attacked by this rabble in Tarneit. “We have to reinforce the law, it would seem, to certain sections of the community. “People have an expectation, and a justified expectation, that they can go down to the local McDonalds … without being heavied by gangs of youths. In Tarneit, that’s not the case.” The manager of McDonald’s Tarneit and McDonald’s Australia management declined to comment.

- Kate Roffey Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said that before the state government imposed rate capping, council rates were going up by an average of six per cent each year. Councils have until January 31 to apply for variations to the cap. Wyndham council acting chief executive Kate Roffey would not confirm or deny whether the council would apply for a variation. Ms Roffey would not specify what impact the rate cap would have on the 2017-18 budget, but according to last

Wyndham rate rises will be capped at the Consumer Price Index for a second consecutive year. The state government confirmed late last month that it would cap council rate rises at two per cent, in line with the CPI, for 2017-18. This year’s cap was 2.5 per cent. Wyndham council has voiced its concerns at the news.
year’s submission to the Essential Service Commission, the council estimated that rate capping could result in a $36 million loss of capital funding over four years. “Over the next six months, we will be developing the 2017-18 budget and rate capping will undoubtedly have some impacts, which we will work through during this time,” she said. “We continue to be concerned about the long-term impacts rate-capping will have on the provision of vital community infrastructure and services. “As one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities, it’s even more important to ensure existing and new residents are not deprived of the services they need.” The council was unsuccessful in gaining a variation on the rate cap for 2016-17, with the ESC determining that the council had the financial capacity to find funding alternatives and expenditure offsets. As a result, the council cut about $3 million from its proposed 2016-17 capital works spending. Municipal Association of Victoria interim president Coral Ross blasted the state government’s decision on rate-capping. “Under a two per cent rate cap, many councils will struggle to meet their community service and asset renewal obligations next year,” she said.

Kevin Hillier is ready for another year of conversations ‌
I
have been a member of the media since February 1973. Yes, 44 years next month. A lot has changed. Technology has been the driving force behind the biggest changes, but changing social attitudes has probably been the hardest adjustment. The line between the public’s right to know and the privacy of the individual has become very blurred for some in the media, both those reporting and those who are being reported upon. I wanted to address this because some people I have written about in this column in recent years believe I have crossed a line ‌ I disagree. I have no interest in anyone’s private life, but their public life is a different matter. There are times when these two certainly cross paths, and decisions have to be made. I don’t have a personal agenda against anyone, and I believe my judgment has been fair in the past, and will continue to be so. Trust me, I won’t be camping out on a Wyndham councillor’s front lawn or driveway hoping to catch them out in any way, or door-stopping their family for a comment.
I don’t write gossip or rumour, but I do write my opinion on the facts I have at my disposal. I have got it wrong on a few occasions, and I have willingly owned up to that ‌ a fact some people choose to overlook. So let’s start the new year off on the right foot. I will continue to write my views on events, people and progress of life in the city of Wyndham, and life in general – you can agree or disagree; I welcome both, that’s why my email address appears at the bottom of the column, and why I give no credence to anonymous responses. If you are going to go to the trouble of expressing your thoughts, put your name to it, stand by your beliefs. I appreciate different points of view and I think vigorous debate is a good thing, as long as it does not become personal. Those who revert to name-calling and the like get none of my time; I have better things to do. I don’t apologise for my opinion because it is just that – one man’s thoughts. I look forward to bringing you my thoughts during the coming year, and hearing your news and views. â–

Water bungle leaves bad taste Four Wyndham properties had their drinking water supply incorrectly connected to a recycled water main for up to a month in a City West Water (CWW) mishap. The bungle happened when CWW began supplying class-A recycled water – the highest class of recycled water – to 4000 properties across west Wyndham in mid-November last year. When a customer notified CWW of a change in water quality and taste, it was found that the property had an incorrect connection between the recycled water main and the drinking water supply. A further three properties were also found to be incorrectly connected to the recycled water supply following CWW testing. Of the four properties affected, two were in Wyndham Vale, the other two in Manor Lakes. All connections have since been rectified. A CWW spokeswoman said nine unoccupied display homes, inaccessible until this week, would also be tested. There had been no serious health concerns from the mishap. “Class-A recycled water is treated to a high standard so the likelihood of falling ill is low.” However, impacted customers were advised to seek medical attention if they felt ill. “CWW is working with the Department of Health and Human Services to assess any potential impact … The independent investigation is complete and we’ll be told findings soon.” Charlene Macaulay

Beachgoers are being urged not to swim near stormwater drains, even if it’s a beautiful day, after three western suburbs beaches recorded faecal pollution. Werribee South, Altona and Williamstown beaches were deemed unsafe for swimming for days following a one-in-100 year storm on December 29. Werribee South recorded the worst water quality of the three beaches this summer, and was deemed too risky for swimming 10 out of 31 days in December. Altona and Williamstown were rated as risky for six of these days. The EPA’s Dr Anthony Boxshall said the health risks were predominantly gastro attacks and infections from open cuts or other wounds. “Werribee South has probably been the lower performer of those three, and that’s because Werribee gets impacted by stormwater run-off more so than the other two, just because it’s a bigger waterway,” he said. “When we had that massive storm, it just kind of picked up everything and washed everything off the streets and into the water, so pretty much all of the bay beaches at some point, we are pretty convinced, had poor water quality right at the height of that storm.” Dr Boxshall said the biggest risk was 28-48 hours after rainfall. “We’ve been doing this for 25 years and we know that for 24-48 hours after rain, our beaches are impacted and water quality is lower,” he said. “By about 48 hours, more than 95 per cent of the pathogen that we’re detecting has died off. “A bit over 80 per cent dies off in that first 24 hours,” he said. “We’ll be giving forecasts twice

in mid-2018, with the corporate office development providing “great new amenities in a modern and contemporary facility. Wyndham council’s acting chief executive Kate Roffey described the news as “fantastic, saying it means more local jobs and a positive
flow-on effect into the Wyndham community. “It is not surprising that a large company, such as Target, has seen Wyndham’s potential and the positives in being based here,â€? Ms Roffey said. “Our convenient location ‌ as well as our mixture of metropolitan and country lifestyle, are some of the same drawcards that have made us one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country.â€? She noted council’s work in promoting “positive developmentâ€? around Wyndham, citing the development of Werribee’s CBD and the East Werribee employment precinct, as
indicating the Target announcement is the first of many. “For several years now, we have been clear in our belief that Wyndham has a key role to play in the ongoing economic growth of the west, Ms Roffey said. “This latest announcement is evidence that our hard work is paying off. “Target’s choice to locate their new national headquarters in Wyndham shows that our municipality is a destination of choice for major corporates, she said. “We are open for business and expect to see other major players following Target’s lead.
Joey on call for gorillas Pint-sized volunteer Isaac French has collected 83 mobile phones in support of Zoos Victoria’s gorilla conservation campaign, They’re Calling on You. The campaign raises funds for gorilla conservation and to reduce the impact of coltan mining on gorilla habitats in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Illegal mining of coltan, a mineral used in mobile phones, is one of the biggest threats to gorillas in the wild. Seven-year-old Isaac, who is a member of the 1st Point Cook Scout Group, took on the challenge for his Joey Scouts Promise Challenge badge, which is awarded on the basis of community work or “duty to others and is the loftiest badge a Joey can attain. “I collected [the phones] from lots of places, he said. “I collected them from school, Joeys Scouts, and I also collected them at dad’s work.
“We put a message on Facebook and we had friends and cousins give us phones. Isaac handed the mobile phones to Werribee Open Range Zoo last Thursday and also met two of the zoo’s gorillas. Zookeeper Kelly Hobbs said the zoo was thrilled with Isaac’s efforts and would love to see more people get involved in the program. Details: www.zoo.com.au/callingonyou Charlene Macaulay

The rise of Hoppers Crossing By Charlene Macaulay It’s the real estate secret Wyndham locals have known for years – now Melbourne is sitting up and taking notice of Hoppers Crossing. The suburb topped a list of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s top 10 suburbs to watch this year. Institute chief executive Geoff White said Hoppers Crossing had enjoyed a median house price growth of 15 per cent in the past year to $416,750. He said solid auction activity, with an 84 per cent clearance rate and a quick

turnaround on private sales, signalled strong buyer demand, with future price growth expected. Hoppers Crossing was one of five suburbs across the west that made the REIV top 10, with Ardeer, St Albans, Kings Park and Delahey
also named. Mr White said outer suburbs were likely to be the top performers in 2017. “Lower stock levels, record low interest rates and strong population growth will encourage buyer interest well into 2017,” he said. “Agents were already filtering listings for February, well ahead of the close of the 2016 year – a very positive sign for the first quarter of 2017. Houses [prices] in Melbourne’s outer suburbs have grown steadily throughout 2016, and given that days on market for the outer suburbs are the lowest in the state, at 28 days, this interest is likely to continue in 2017.”
The Hoppers Crossing renaissance has been going since 2015, with owner-occupiers and investors alike flocking to the suburb. Wyndham real estate agents, including Rob Westwood from Westwood First National, have told Star Weekly that many Sydney investors have bought, or are interested in, Hoppers Crossing properties. Samantha McCarthy, from Hockingstuart Werribee, said a shortage of homes on the market and developments such as Pacific Werribee and AquaPulse were driving up prices in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee.
Building a home for hope “For the time they were in Cambodia, the students ate local cuisine and learned about the history and culture through their guide. “The house they constructed was located in a village called Meanchey Commune, in the Prasat Bakong District,” he said. “Highlights included playing with the village children, working with the monks from Life and Hope, sharing lunches with the villagers, and the handover ceremony after the house was completed.” Mr Mooney said the experience had a positive impact on students, and the school hopes to make the trip an annual event. A group of Point Cook students wrapped up the past school year tackling a humanitarian project in Cambodia. Seven students from years 10 and 11 at Point Cook Senior Secondary College travelled to Siem Reap in Cambodia for a cultural tour, and also built a “peace house” for a local family. The materials for the house were purchased with $2000 raised by the college community. Students on the trip dug into their own pockets to pay for electricity and other essential household items. Assistant principal Chris Mooney said the family for whom the house was built had been chosen by the Buddhist monks of the Life and Hope Foundation, selected on the basis of their extreme poverty. “After arriving in Siem Reap, the group [of students] spent a couple of days touring the world-renowned temples in Angkor,” Mr Mooney said.

Enough is enough, things need to change.” Mr Willems (pictured) says he tried “nearly every fad diet” in his attempt to lose weight but continuously failed. “Unfortunately, these crazy and unsustainable diets led to failure after failure and the downward spiral continued where I ended up fatter and fatter after every attempt to lose the weight,” he said. But he soldiered on and managed to shed 35 kilograms. “I was so proud of myself for shedding the weight that I had only dreamed about for the previous two decades. I was active

and finally enjoying quality time with my family.” But Mr Willems wasn’t done with his lifestyle change. He decided to go back to school to study fitness and personal training, and then quit his office job. He now works in health and fitness, and will host a free fat-loss seminar next week where he hopes to change the lives of others. “My goal is to help 200 overweight Wyndham residents in 2017,” he said. “I’ll explain how and why most people get it wrong when they undertake a new diet and what changes they can make to experience long-term results.” The free event will be held at St Thomas Church hall from 7.30pm. Wyndham councillors Mia Shaw and Kim McAliney and Kidsafe general manager Jason Chambers promote the latest campaign with children from Hoppers Crossing Children’s Centre. (Supplied)
Kids campaign heats up It’s a public safety message that is repeated every summer – and Wyndham council is again calling on parents and carers to never leave children alone in cars. Wyndham council has joined forces with Kidsafe Victoria to raise awareness of the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars – even if it’s only for a few minutes. The council has added Kidsafe Do Not Leave Children in Cars signage across all 24 kindergartens in the city, ensuring parents and carers doing kinder pick-ups and drop-offs see the message at least twice a day. It will also plug its safety message via social media. Geelong, Moonee Valley and Casey councils run similar campaigns.
Kidsafe Victoria general manager Jason Chambers said temperatures inside parked cars could be up to 30 degrees hotter than outside temperatures, exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in a matter of minutes on a typical summer’s day. “Babies and small children are particularly at risk because they can lose fluid quickly, become dehydrated and suffer from heatstroke, which can be life-threatening,” Mr Chambers said. Between September 1, 2015 to August 31 last year, Ambulance Victoria paramedics were called to 1623 cases of children locked in cars – 190 more than the year before. In Victoria, it is illegal to leave a child unattended in a car.
Five new doctors and five nurses will soon be on standby at Werribee Mercy’s emergency department after the state government moved to inject more capacity into the busy hospital. Last month the government committed $1.64 million towards three new treatment areas and the extra emergency health workers. Mercy Health’s chief executive of health services Dr Linda Mellors said the hospital is thrilled to be receiving the funding. “The additional funding is expected to support the timely handover of patients arriving by ambulance, which will improve patient flow through the ED,” Dr Mellors said. It will also improve the timeliness of access to care and reduce the overall length of time patients spend in emergency, she said. Werribee MP Tim Pallas agreed, saying moving patients out of the emergency department and into hospital beds was a key to efficient health care. “[This means] more patients get the treatment they need sooner, and when they need it,” he said. In a typical 24-hour period, between 100 and 120 people present to Werribee Mercy’s emergency department for help. Health minister Jill Hennessy said the latest investment would also free up ambulances and get paramedics back on the road more quickly. Adem Saban

As we start returning from holidays I wanted to kick off the year on a less formal note but one that I hope emphasises how Councillors will work together and be available to meet and speak with you. The community rightly expects local Councillors to be engaged. After only a few months together, I can already say I’m confident your Councillors will definitely exceed this expectation. One way we will gather community views and represent these at Council meetings is through our Councillor Portfolio roles. As well as covering Growth and Transport portfolio topics, I also have Cultural Diversity. Deputy Mayor Cr Kim McAliney has Safer Communities; Cr Aaron An has Smart City; Cr John Gibbons has Tourism and Major Events; Cr Josh Gilligan has Learning City; Cr Tony Hooper has Arts, Culture and Heritage; Cr Intaj Khan has Urban Futures; Cr Heather Marcus has Environment and Sustainability; Cr Peter Maynard has Sports Development; Cr Mia Shaw has Family Friendly City and Cr Walter Villagonzalo has Future Focused Economy. You can find out more information on this valuable way to ensure all Councillors are engaged with the community and find each Councillor’s contact details on our website. Regards, Henry Barlow

MY WYNDHAM Greg Archer volunteers his time to help people when they’re most in need. The Little River resident speaks with Adem Saban.
KIDS DAY OUT JAN 27T H 2017
How long have you been in Little River? Thirty-two years. We came here from Altona because of the countryside. I grew up in Altona, and it was always countryside atmosphere … riding horses everywhere. Then it started building up, and there were houses everywhere. One day we went for a trip down to Little River and thought it was perfect. What do you love most about Little River?

The country atmosphere, but the fact that it’s still close to townships like Geelong and Melbourne. It takes us 25 minutes to get to Geelong, and there’s easy parking. I just love the lifestyle and the freedom. We lived in Houston, Texas, for a while, but we found that we were closed in. I used to have a lot of horses, and in Little River we found we could do what we wanted. I’ve had sheep, cattle and horses. Little River offers that lifestyle that you can go ahead and do something as a hobby – you can’t do that in the suburbs. Tell me a bit about your volunteering. I’ve been a trustee of the Rothwell Cemetery Trust for 15 years, and a member of the CFA for 22 years. My role with the cemetery can be anything from mowing the grass, to attending funerals as a witness to make sure
everything is OK, and offering guidance in finding a stonemason. Anything to make their time as easy as possible. It’s rewarding in a way … the reward is giving that bit of assistance people require in their time of need. It’s a nice feeling to give in that time of need. With the CFA, we get to see things not many others see. You see the good and the bad. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the support of my wife. She’s the one who gets up at 2am to open the back door as I race out to the fire station. And you’ve had a brush with Hollywood in your role with the CFA? Being in the fire brigade, we’ve been needed to stand by on shoots when pyrotechnics are being used. I’ve also been an extra in the background. Ned Kelly and The Dressmaker were filmed nearby and we were involved with those … also, Blue Heelers a fair bit. Where do you go in your spare time? I don’t get many hours spare, but I like to go along the river or across the You Yangs. Would you ever leave? I’d like to do some travelling, but Little River will always be our base.

HOPPERS CROSSING VETERINARY CLINIC & HOSPITAL
Fears and phobias are prevalent problems in the behavior of our family pets. Distress can be induced by different stimuli – fireworks and thunderstorms being the most common causes. Other phobias include being scared of visitors, even fear of going to the vet clinic. Dogs and cats can express their fears in different ways, ranging from being timid, barking, showing aggression or becoming destructive. While there is no simple cure for behavior problems, your vet can certainly help with advice and medication. Short-term anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed by your vet for known events that cause stress. Longer-term, your pet may benefit from behavioural modifications, such as crate training and desensitisation. Pets can be taught to sleep and eat in a large crate, which becomes their safe den where they can feel secure at times of stress. Repeated gentle exposure to a phobia while receiving positive rewards, such as food treats or praise, can also be helpful over time. Your vet may also suggest consulting a behavioural specialist in certain cases to help your pet live a more stress-free life.
Listening, caring and providing choices
16 year old Frazer has no fears or phobias, making him the perfect cat to live at the vet clinic.

Catch the trend in seniors’ lifestyle According to Nikki Fisher, chief operating officer of Ingenia Lifestyle – a leading owner, operator and developer of over-55s communities – there has been unprecedented sales and interest from clients looking for a new alternative to the traditional “price gouging” retirement model. Ms Fisher says lifestyle-focused land lease communities are one of Australia’s senior living trends now taking off. “The popularity of the model is its simplicity,” she explains. “Residents purchase a new home and lease the land, offering a much more affordable price point, eliminating the need for residents to pay stamp duty or entry and exit fees. “Those who look to downsize and relocate to an over-55s lifestyle community often pay less for their new home, which provides them with more capital to fund their senior years. “Many lifestyle community residents are also able to access rental assistance and take part in the Ingenia Care Wellbeing Program, enabling them to continue living independently.” One simple site fee covers maintenance and management, with the home owner retaining 100 per cent of any capital gains made on the property, if they choose to sell. Ingenia Lifestyle Lara has responded to a high-level demand for more affordable and age-appropriate accommodation in the Geelong region. The current stage of the lifestyle community is 50 per cent sold, while the next stage is ahead of schedule. Homes are available for sale from $199,000. “More than 100 Ingenia Lifestyle Lara residents now enjoy all the benefits of living in a safe community environment,” Ms Fisher said. Rachel Lane, an over-55s finance expert and author, said that since Aged Pension asset tests came into effect on January 1, it was now vital that seniors review their income and asset mix to maximise future finances. Ms Fisher added: “To assess the impact of the pension changes for you personally, Ingenia Lifestyle invites you to have a free assessment with the team at Village Guru. To access this exclusive invitation, please call Village Guru on 1300 855 770 to receive the free five-question pension test.”

SPORT IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The
west’s favourite son, Merv Hughes, is all over our television screens again – but this time, he is not immersed knee deep in spiders or animal excrement. He is fronting an advertising campaign for Coles supermarkets. Along with celebrity chef Curtis Stone, Merv is extolling the virtues of the chain’s meat. I have done many a sausage sizzle and barbecue with the great man over the years and I can vouch for his love and passion for steak and snags. If the Olympics held sausage eating as a sport, Merv would be a podium finisher every four years. Curtis Stone is a western suburbs boy, so he and Merv got on famously. Curtis played under-age footy for Kensington and made a WRFL representative side in his day.
■ Congratulations
Werribee players celebrate the dismissal of Williamstown’s Brent McMinn. (Damjan Janevski)
Tigers return to the den After half a season spent on the road due to its Chirnside Park redevelopment, the Tigers finally get a homecoming this weekend hosting Balwyn in a two-day blockbuster. “We’re back…” Werribee captain Tim O’Brien said gleefully. “They’ve re-done the square and the ground is up and running, but we’ll be out of portables for clubrooms. “We’re going to get a good facility at the end … we’re looking forward to getting back on our home deck and, hopefully, having a home ground advantage.” Werribee’s players stayed positive as they travelled to faraway places, such as Endeavour Hills, Mount Waverley and Croydon. They understood short-term pain was necessary for the long-term gain of the club when the swanky new facilities are complete in January next year, but the travel has taken its toll. “It’s been pretty tough yards travelling away every game,” O’Brien said.
Werribee did well to win its first three games on the road, but there has been a lack of pomp in their play in recent times – the Tigers lost four of the past five games, hitting their lowest point on Saturday, all out for 77 in pursuit of Williamstown’s modest total of 8-172 at Williamstown Cricket Ground. The return to Chirnside Park could not have come at a better time as the Tigers slide to eighth on the ladder. O’Brien is hoping for a lift in the batting department. “Our batting hasn’t been great since the Noble Park game, so we’ve got a lot of work to do on our batting going forward,” he said. Losing two wickets in Saturday’s first over was always going to be poison for the Werribee run chase. Shaun Dean (19 not out) and Chris Hennessey (17) tried a fightback, but to no avail. When Hennessey was dismissed, it sparked a batting collapse, and Werribee lost 8-50. “Losing two wickets in the first over wasn’t the ideal start,” O’Brien said. “We just couldn’t put any partnerships together.”
It’s a pity Werribee batsmen did not take care of business because the bowling unit was up and about earlier in the day. Aside from a Craig Sheedy blitzkrieg (56), including two fours and three sixes, and some handy runs from Matthew Dervan (30 not out), Mitchell Streiff (27) and Daniel Popa (22 not out), Werribee probably took the honours in the first half of the game. “I couldn’t fault our bowling effort,” O’Brien said. “From the Melton game, we’ve really improved in the field and with the bowling. “They’ve got a strong batting side and were going pretty hard at one stage when Streiff and Sheedy got going, so to restrict them to 172, I was pretty happy with that.” It’s not time for Werribee to hit the panic button just yet … but it’s getting close to it. A victory over high-flying Balwyn could be just the tonic to get the Tigers back on track. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing was ripped apart by Box Hill in the first game of the year, out for 138 chasing Box Hill’s 8-212.
Sports shorts Bowls
Werribee will be immediately under the pump when the Bowls Victoria division 1 season resumes on Saturday. Not only are the Bees sitting in the bottom two, but they have a daunting task of travelling to ladder leader Fitzroy Victoria first-up after the break. The Bees at least have some good form on the board, winning two of their past three matches.

Whittington, from Williamstown, is no stranger to the Open, having enjoyed some memorable moments in the doubles, but this is a leap forward as a singles player. The wait goes on for promotion contenders the Werribee Giants. Tight bowling sets up Centurions’ first win of season
With 20 wickets, Rahmatullah Khwaja is ranked fifth for wickets taken in north-west A1 this season. (Damjan Janevski)
The monkey is off the back for Werribee Centrals. The Centurions recorded their first win of the season, by 33 runs over Williamstown CYMS in the VTCA north-west A1 match at Altona Meadows Reserve on Saturday. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve had a lot of close games this season,” Centurions skipper Luke Allister said. “It was good to finally get a win under the belt. We’ve been in a lot of good positions this year to win games and we’ve let a few slip. “It just shows that if you keep working at things you’re going to reap the rewards.” Werribee Centrals’ bowling unit put the clamps on the home side, restricting CYs to a gettable 5-140 from 40 overs. Opening bowlers Jayden Golowka (0-15 off five) and Jacob Russell (1-16 off eight) produced tight lines and lengths, proving hard to get away. When CYs tried to lift the run rate, they were confronted by an even more miserly Rahmatullah Khwaja, who took 2-13 off
eight. “Those figures in a one-dayer are pretty extraordinary when you think it was a pretty flat deck and he was bowling at the end of the innings,” Allister said. “His experience around the group, especially for myself, being a young first-time captain, is huge.” Werribee Centrals weren’t going to let this one slip away. The Centurions passed the target six down but always seemed in control. Agha Adeel top-scored for the Centurions with 39, continuing his solid form. “He’s been a big pick-up for us,” Allister said. “How he hasn’t made a big score is beyond us because you watch him bat and you think there’s a really big one around the corner.” Khwaja capped a stand-out, all-round performance with 25, while Waqar Shah added 22 not out. Allister was pleased to see his batsmen take a positive mindset into the run chase. “You can break the shackles a little bit in the one-dayers,” he said.
Saints full steam ahead By Lance Jenkinson It’s all aboard the good ship Seabrook this summer. The Saints seem to be cruising in calm waters en route to a VTCA west A1 cricket finals showing. After five consecutive wins, the Saints are in second place on the ladder, with only two unfortunate wash-outs standing between them and the summit. Such excitement and anticipation has not been felt for a long time at Seabrook. “The morale is huge, everyone is just loving it,” Saints’ captain Leigh Edwards said. “We’re getting huge numbers at training, everyone is rocking up switched on, and it’s just fantastic when everyone is up and about. “Hopefully, finals are begging.” As captain of the ship, Edwards is on high alert to potential dangers. He is constantly at his players to improve, no matter how big their victories have been. So it was on Saturday – Seabrook was like a pirate ship in its 84-run dismantlement of Melton South at Bruce Comben Reserve, extracting just about everything possible from its batsmen, with 9-222 off 40 overs. Bowlers followed suit to roll Melton South for 138. Even after such a commanding win, Edwards felt there was scope to improve. “We probably left about 20 runs short out there,” he said of the batting. “I was a little bit disappointed in that. “It’s probably nit-picking when you walk off at the end of the day with 220 … but it’s me trying to get some more out of the boys. “There’s room for improvement every game.” Opening batsmen Robert Engler (35) and Stephen Morgan (49) built the platform for a big total. The Saints had 82 runs on the board before the loss of their first wicket. “We got off to a flyer with the two openers,” Edwards said. “They really set it up.” Edwards cashed in, battering a tiring bowling attack to make 81, including five fours and a remarkable seven sixes. Dilip Sarkhell added 27 and, before you knew it, Seabrook had their match-winning score. Hitesh Bavarva was the pick of the Seabrook bowlers with 4-11, but Edwards was not selling short anyone who toiled away with the ball and in the field on such a scorching hot day. “Most of the guys bowled well,” Edwards said. “If you look through the stats through the season, most of our bowlers have chipped in. “We’re not reliant on one bowler to get the job done every single week.” Seabrook will host bottom side County West in a one-day game on Saturday. 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 11, 2017
Werribee Centrals might have only one win, but they’re just 17 points out of the finals race. While mindful of relegation danger, the Centurions haven’t totally given up hope of featuring in this season’s finals, but they will need to get a wriggle on and victory over Kingsville in a one-day match at Galvin Park on Saturday is a must. “It’s obviously a long shot, but it’s a tight table so we’re still a chance to make the finals and that’s what we’re still aiming to do,” Allister said. In north-west B1, Wyndham Vale fell 22 runs short against Maribyrnong St Mary’s. The Falcons were restricted to 7-186 in their search for the 209 target. The difference in the game was Marby opener Harpreet Singh, who made 112 not out. Point Cook was also on the receiving end, losing to Newport-Digman by 24 runs at Bryan Martyn Oval. Lance Jenkinson
Cycling ace beats heat to extend record Saturday’s 19th round of the Footscray Cycling Club season saw riders brave the heat at Drake Boulevard in Altona. The day’s racing followed an uncomfortably hot night, and the rapidly rising temperature brought high rates of rider attrition. In A-grade, Footscray club champion Dom Dudkiewicz extended his unbeaten run to 28 races, with a breakaway that had the champion questioning the wisdom of a do-or-die move. “It was hot and windy and there was an early attack that I bridged across to a good five-man break early in the race, but after about 10 minutes I found myself on my own as riders pulled the pin,” Dudkiewicz said. “I didn’t think I’d stay away on my own in this heat. I didn’t know how far ahead I was, so I put my head down and upped the pace for a few laps. “With about 15 laps to go, I got a time check from a spectator who said I was 35 seconds up, and then I started suffering and fading, losing time. “I really thought I was done when I saw the bunch, but there were only four laps to go so I pushed on and got home.” Dudkiewicz crossed the line well clear of second-placed Matt Muscat, who was also solo and clear of the bunch, while Melbourne University’s Brent Woodlock took the bunch sprint and third place. The B-grade race was fast-paced and full of attacks. Brunswick’s Simon Troon defied the odds and kicked clear of a strong bunch, riding solo to the very end only to be caught and cruelly beaten by half a wheel by Thornbury’s Glen Grbesa. “A few guys who tried to get off the front at the start and maybe they burned themselves out a bit towards the end in the heat because, even though we got a bit of a change, the conditions were still pretty tough,” Grbesa said. Having put in a command solo performance, Troon hung on to second place as the bunch sprint engulfed him. In C-grade, Footscray’s Shane Doyle took the bunch sprint from Anthony Gercovich and John Mogavero, while in D-grade, St Kilda rider Adrian Koukoulas took the win from Coburg’s David Diviny and MCL’s Damian Bevilacqua.
Seabrook opener Stephen Morgan is trending up with scores of 48 and 49 in his past two games. (Shawn Smits)
