NEWS + SPORT + THE WEST’S BEST PROPERTY GUIDE Caravan park residents Beverly Bolton, Bob Hanley and Marilyn Wilson are facing eviction. (Damjan Janevski)
Caravan eviction fears By Adem Saban Residents of a Werribee South caravan park fear they’ll soon be homeless, with new owners taking over the site they’ve called home for decades. The old BP caravan park on O’Connors Road is being bought by Holiday Lifestyle Developments, which leases it now. Settlement is due to go through early next year. The investment company plans to transform the site into “Wyndham Cove Estate”, offering “boutique style” beachside living. At least six current residents own their own caravans or units, but lease the land these are on. The new owners wrote to permanent residents in November, offering them the chance to buy a plot of land with a new townhouse, or they
can rent a townhouse. The advertised price for house and land packages starts at $295,000. Alternatively, residents have been offered relocation to a caravan park in Echuca or Portland at the new owner’s expense. Beverly Bolton and husband Bill have lived at the park for 23 years, but don’t have the money to buy into the new-look park. Mrs Bolton, 63, has survived three bouts of cancer, and first moved to the park with her husband for a seachange. “This is just added stress I don’t need,” she told Star Weekly. “I feel it’s very unfair.” “Our family is in Werribee, my doctors are in Werribee. I don’t want to be shifted to Portland or Echuca,” she said. “At the moment, we just don’t know what is going to happen.”
Marilyn Wilson moved to the park in 1999 to look after her ill father. Now 66, she’s facing her own health struggles. Ms Wilson is permanently hooked up to a portable oxygen supply and is on the waiting list for a heart and lung transplant. “I don’t know what I’ll do,” she said. “I live with my daughter here … I can’t afford to spend what little savings I have to buy the land. “With my health the way it is, I can’t move to Echuca or Portland either.” Bob Hanley, 79, has called the BP caravan park home for 25 years. He fears he could be facing eviction sooner than others. A map outlining all the plots on offer has been put up at the front of the caravan park – it shows Mr Hanley’s plot as already being sold.
“I have nowhere to go ,” he said. “I might live with my granddaughter in Werribee for a little while, but then I don’t know where I’ll go.” But Holiday Lifestyle Developments director Lauren Clarke was adamant Mr Hanley’s site has not been sold, despite what the sign says. “It’s a bigger site … there has been some registration of interest, but it has not been sold,” she told Star Weekly. “Nothing’s happening … we aren’t selling the sites at the moment.” The BP park will be the third caravan park to shut in the west in a 12 month period; the Half Moon Caravan Park at Brooklyn closed in January, while residents at Williamstown North have until January 13 to move out of the Hobsons Bay Caravan Park to make way for a four-storey residential development.

Spike in arson, sex, drug crime By Charlene Macaulay A rise in arson, theft, sexual offences and drug offences has fuelled a 14.2 per cent crime spike across Wyndham. A total 15,784 offences were committed across the city in the year to September 30 – up from 13,816 over the same period last year, figures from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal. In particular, there were substantial increases in the number of sexual offences (up 33.5 per cent), arson offences (49.5 per cent), drug offences (21.5 per cent) and theft (13.8 per cent) over that period. On the flip side, there have been noticeable
decreases in the number of homicides (down 50 per cent), deceptions (11.1 per cent), and public order offences (7.4 per cent), mainly weapons offences (21.7 per cent). Release of the figures follows a Star Weekly report about a group of Point Cook men who are so fed up with the lack of police presence on their streets that they’ve organised their own night patrols. Senior Sergeant Peter Bitton said the rise in crime could be attributed to a rise in family violence incidents and targeted investigations. “Although we ultimately want to see a reduction in family violence offences an initial increase is somewhat encouraging as it appears
‘‘
Victims now have the confidence to come - Peter Bitton forward
’’
victims now have the confidence to come forward and report these matters knowing that they will be supported by police and a thorough investigation will be undertaken,” he said. “Police continue to focus on reducing crime across a number of areas with dedicated units targeting vehicle crime, family violence and house and business break-ins.
“We also have a team conducting patrols of our public areas including Pacific Werribee, Point Cook Town Centre and our transport hubs. “On top of this we continue our core functions of road policing, crime investigation, response units and customer service at our two police stations. “We are also undertaking a number of pro-active measures that will see us engaging with youth around Wyndham with the view to strengthening these relationships.” Senior Victoria Police and the state government have rejected claims that the state is in the midst of a “crime tsunami”.

African flavours at home on the range Werribee Open Range Zoo will be alive with summer drumming when the annual Rhythm of Africa nights return. Running every Saturday night from January 7 until February 25, the program will offer Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, drumming workshops, hair braiding and face-painting. African-inspired dishes will be served, though families are welcome to enjoy their own picnics as they listen to contemporary and traditional African music. Children under 16 will be admitted for free. Proceeds from the concert series help Zoos Victoria fight wildlife extinction. Details: zoo.org.au/rhythm. Charlene Macaulay

Those chasing big bucks in Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit appear to have greater chances of winning a major lottery if they buy their tickets locally. The postcode 3029, which takes in Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit, has been named the third most frequent area for division one prizes being won across all Tattslotto outlets in the state. The Hoppers Crossing-Tarneit area is also third highest in terms of total division one prize money being paid out, with more than $5.8 million. The biggest prize amount from a ticket sold in 3029 was $2 million. Tatura delivered the most division one cash in the state, with more than $13.5 million. Melbourne delivered $9.4 million. The figures are for the year to the end of November. Hoppers Crossing’s Target Lotto has sold six division-one winning tickets in just two years. Carlo Addamo, the owner of the store, said the shop had recently relocated following the shopping centre’s redevelopment and superstitious customers were fearful the new shop wouldn’t be as lucky. But 10 days after the relocation, a division-one ticket was sold. Mr Addamo said that while he was not privy to statistics on how the Hoppers Crossing store ranked in terms of winning tickets sold, his store seemed to be one of the luckiest.

Beach thugs put on notice By Goya Dmytryshchak Police have vowed to crack down on troublemakers at Altona beach after a pizza maker was attacked and brawls erupted over two warm nights last week. Sergeant Dave Arnold, who heads up the summer policing team, said police were trying to put a lid on antisocial behaviour of the type witnessed last week. “It does appear to be people outside the area,â€? he said. “I can confirm that there was a fight there on Monday night and a person was arrested and charged.â€? Star Weekly understands that a pizza-maker intervened after seeing a group of teenagers drinking and was struck on the back of the head with a stick. A 15-year-old from Kurunjang has been charged with assault offences and bailed to appear in a Children’s Court in February. Sergeant Arnold confirmed that police backup was called in on Tuesday last week after brawls erupted at Logan Reserve. “There were a number of what I’ll call scuffles amongst groups,â€? he said. “As a result we put a very heavy police response into place ‌ until the groups decided to leave. We won’t tolerate antisocial behaviour and will do everything in our powers to prevent breaches of the peace so that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe time at the beach this year.â€? Altona residents took to social media to voice their disgust at outsiders coming into their suburb and trashing it, with some calling for a permanent police caravan or kiosk. Head of the Altona Village Traders Association
Kim Walsh said a private security guard employed by businesses would be patrolling the streets. “They are out-of-towners ‌ they just seem hell-bent on causing trouble with their antisocial behaviour. We don’t want those people in our town,â€? he said. “We’ve worked our bums off to make our town a safe and enjoyable place, and it’s very disheartening that

you can only have one or two small incidents and it undoes all that good work. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Colleen Gates said the council was working closely with traders, police and the lifesaving club to ensure the community’s expectations of safety and cleanliness were met. “If people behave sensibly, clean up after themselves and are respectful of others then everyone can enjoy our foreshore areas this summer, she said. “Incidents of vandalism, theft or other crimes should be reported immediately to Victoria Police. Fines of $200 will be issued to anyone caught with an open container at the beach or within an area bounded by Romawi and Bayview streets and Civic Parade. Lockers to store valuables are being installed at the Altona Lifesaving Club but are not expected to be ready until early next year.

Pool time hits the spot These pupils from Werribee’s Western English Language School finished their school year with a splash. Forty children from the school received free swimming lessons earlier this month as part of Royal Life Saving’s swim and survive program. Many of the pupils are migrants new to Australia. David Holland from Life Saving Victoria said the program made it possible for children who are likely to have missed out on private swimming lessons to learn
vital swimming and lifesaving skills. “Royal Life Saving believes that every person has the right to learn basic swimming, water safety, survival and rescue skills, regardless of who they are or where they live, Mr Holland said. Western English Language School teacher Claire Kelly added: “Swimming lessons are not just a valuable life skill. For people newly arrived to Australia, it’s such an important part of being socially included. Charlene Macaulay

School push for Williams Landing By Charlene Macaulay
He said families were moving out of Williams Landing because of the lack of schools. “The nearest primary and secondary schools are either far away from the local community or already experiencing enrolment pressure,” he said. “To get to those schools, they have to cross major roads or even freeways and train lines. The children can’t walk or ride to school – it’s too far and unsafe. “In the next five years, the number of secondary school-aged children in Wyndham will grow by 5000 – and by 10,000 over the next 10 years.”
One of Wyndham’s new councillors is pushing for Williams Landing to get its own school. Aaron An, who has previously petitioned Wyndham council and the state government for a school in the suburb, used his new councillor status last week to ask the council to lobby the state and federal governments on the issue. Cr An said Williams Landing, and Wyndham as a whole, were in desperate need of more schools.
His fellow councillor, Kim McAliney, agreed. “I feel for the parents that wonder where their children will get a place in the future,” she said. “While this is a state responsibility, as councillors of a relatively young community we need to look at all avenues to encourage more schools.” Cr An’s motion was passed unanimously. State Education Minister James Merlino said recent school investments in Truganina would benefit Williams Landing families. “In 2015, we built Truganina P-9 College
within 600 metres of the Williams Landing town centre,” he said. “We have since provided funding to buy land for the proposed new Truganina East P-9 school and to upgrade Truganina P-9. “Both of these developments will provide first-rate education opportunities for Williams Landing students. We are also working with Wyndham city council on ways to ease traffic issues impacting Williams Landing residents accessing local schools.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan declined to comment on the issue.
Maxi trash haul shocks A whopping 1250 kilograms of rubbish has been collected along the Werribee River in a clean-up spearheaded by Beach Patrol 3030 and the Werribee River Association. Eighteen volunteers collected the rubbish in just three hours, with the results deemed “disturbing” by Beach Patrol 3030’s Rob Bradley. With the help of Holcim Werribee staff, 793 bottles and cans, 403 plastic bags, 59 food packaging items, four shopping trolleys, three bikes and a sofa were collected. The clean-up took place at the rear of Prouse Place. Mr Bradley said the strangest item found in the river was a mini-motorbike. “It was spotted by our canoeist and hauled up by rope and muscle,” he said. “It was definitely the strangest thing to be found in the river. “There was so much rubbish that the council truck had to come back for a second load.”
Mr Bradley said the rubbish in the river was having a detrimental effect on the health of the river and the platypuses that call it home. He also expressed concerns about the impact the rubbish had on marine life when it reached the bay. “We had another clean-up not too long ago, so there’s a lot being dumped in a short period of time,” he said. The next scheduled clean-up will be on February 12 at Campbell’s Cove from 11.30am. Volunteers are welcome. Adem Saban

Kevin Hillier says ‘cool it’ to unsociable writers on social media
W
here did that year go? I started 2016 calling for new faces to run for the council election and for the election to be above board and run in a civil manner. The latter was too much to ask for as social media is now just a platform for extremely nasty and personal insults without requiring anything except a keyboard to express your vitriol. We do have new faces in council, but as yet we don’t know if that will result in a change in its operation of the council. Much was made recently of two councillors not being in the photo that appeared on the cover of the latest edition of Wyndham News. This council publication is dropped into letterboxes across the city. Councillors Marcus and Khan were missing from the cover shot. When contacted by me, both gave plausible reasons for their non-appearance, which I accept as fair enough. The outrage on social media regarding their non-appearance and Cr Khan not being part of the inside councillor profile, was unnecessary and unwarranted. If you want to agitate about something, please do
but ensure it’s worthy of everyone’s time and energy. The frivolous and constant barrage by some is beyond a joke, and the personal nature of some comments is not in anyone’s interest. Let’s let the council actually do something before we rush to condemn them. Believe me, when the time and issue is right, I will lead the charge, but until then cool your jets. One thing I would suggest is making the mayoral column in this paper more relevant to 2017. The weekly musings over the years of openings etc attended by the mayor or councillors has been done to the nth degree. The mayor, after all, is just one of 11 councillors. Maybe a rotation system would give ratepayers and residents a better insight into the machinations of all of our elected representatives and their issues of importance. My thanks as always to Chris Byrne and everyone at Westpoint Ford for their continuing support in 2016 and into 2017. I hope all readers have a happy and safe Christmas and new year. I look forward to bringing you more of the Hillier View in 2017. ■

The Force Will Be Out in Strength Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday for 24 day from Friday 16 December 2016 to Sunday 8 January 2017 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period. Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said during this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts/Restraint Non Compliance. Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting our major arterial roads during this holiday period. Speed Cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to
play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Christmas/New Year Holiday. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.
Proud Sponsors of In The Doghouse & The Hillier View
He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000
Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.
Victoria Police will blitz holiday hotspots over Christmas and new year. Operation Roadwise – a 24-day statewide campaign – will target dangerous driving, drug driving and irresponsible behaviour. As of Friday, police will be out in force at popular holiday destinations in metropolitan and regional areas, ensuring a visible and mobile police presence to encourage safe driving.
Station carpark upgraded
Ace Infrastructure has been awarded the contract to upgrade the Williams Landing train station carpark. New lighting, CCTV cameras, line marking and signage will be included in and around the station. More parking at the station also aims to reduce congestion on local streets by encouraging more people to use public transport. SPEED KILLS!
Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads.
If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users.
Blitz on, drivers
DRIVING IS NOT A GAME!
Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.

West launches carpool By Charlene Macaulay Move over Uber, Wyndham now has its own carpool service and app. The Carpool in the West initiative launched earlier this month, enabling people to share rides with others nearby who are travelling in the same direction. The service can be accessed via free smartphone apps and a website. The technology uses Google maps to pair carpoolers with others within a three-kilometre radius whose destinations are also within a three-kilometre radius.

People can help to reduce the number of cars - Henry Barlow … on roads
’’
The app was developed by Victoria University in conjunction with Maribyrnong council, Western Health, Werribee Mercy and the RACV. Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Melton councils have all signed up to the initiative, as has Victoria University, Mercy Health, VicRoads, the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust and Western Health. A bus and multi-occupancy lane will be added to Point Cook’s Palmers Road in a bid to get residents on board with new ride-share opportunities, and some employers are also offering priority parking for people who carpool. Wyndham residents,” Cr Barlow said. “By signing up to Carpool the West and sharing a ride, people can help to reduce the number of cars we have on our roads. “But there are many other motivations for carpooling. It also reduces the wear and tear on your vehicle, helps you to save money on
fuel, tolls and parking and reduces your carbon footprint.” The initiative comes a month after the state government announced a $1.8 billion road upgrade for seven of Wyndham’s busiest roads. For more information on Carpooling the West, visit www.carpoolthewest.org

Sports reserve signed off Work on a $5.7 million sports reserve in Williams Landing will start in coming months, with Wyndham council approving a planning permit for the site. Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve – which is bounded by Williams Landing Boulevard, Palmers and Freya roads and Chessington Drive – will be constructed over two stages, with stage one slated for completion by mid-2017. As reported by Star Weekly in May, the reserve will include two full-size ovals, six tennis courts, two of which will also be suitable for netball, and a playground. Stage two will include a sports pavilion and a 131-space carpark. The permit was approved by all councillors bar Aaron An, who abstained. Cr An said Williams Landing needed a new school before a sports facility. “I can relate to the frustration many people feel about the gap between growth and infrastructure,” he said. “I am aware of families who are moving out of Williams Landing [because there’s no school] … I have never heard of anyone moving out of a suburb because of a lack of a sports oval.” Cr Peter Maynard said he respected Cr An’s position, but said the council had to work within its own parameters. “We need lots of things, and sporting facilities in this particular case [are something] we have control over,” he said. “We don’t have control over provision of schools.” Charlene Macaulay

Mayor digs in over green wedge By Adem Saban
8 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 21, 2016
Homegrown is best in state
(Damjan Janevski)
Unless state legislation is changed, the green wedge protecting farmlands at Werribee South isn’t going anywhere … that’s the message Wyndham’s mayor wants out, loud and clear. Speaking to Star Weekly last week, Cr Henry Barlow said the council supports the planning zone protection as it stands. In the meantime, it has asked planning minister Richard Wynne to appoint an independent panel to review submissions lodged with it earlier this year. Thirty-eight of the 44 submissions called for the green wedge zoning to be lifted. Cr Barlow said the council will consider the panel’s recommendations. “There has been no discussion on changing the green wedge … I haven’t spoken to any councillor, except Cr Khan, who believes we should go in a different direction to the current policy,” Cr Barlow said. In an interview with Star Weekly earlier this month, Cr Khan called for the entire area to be rezoned for mixed use, suggesting a tourism precinct could be the way ahead for Werribee South. “I have no problem with councillors expressing their personal view, as long as they make it quite clear that any opposition to a council decision is based on their own personal opinion, and that they accept the decision of council … and support the recommendation or the conclusion,” Cr Barlow said. But Cr Khan has repeated his call for the green wedge to be lifted. “It is my opinion that those people who wish to rezone should have the opportunity,” he said. “I would like to see a city by the sea … I am entitled to express my view. “It is my democratic right,” Cr Khan said.
These young gardeners know a thing or two about growing perfect fruit and vegetables. The Point Cook P-9 College students were ecstatic to learn their efforts working the land had won the school the state’s best edible garden award. The school received its $1000 prize at the recent Victorian School Garden Awards, which were held at the Botanic Gardens. The bounty will go towards plants and supplies for the school’s kitchen garden. The garden is mostly tended by the school’s grade 3 and 4 pupils as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, which teaches children how to grow and harvest vegetables, fruit and herbs. The school also has hens, which present another learning experience for the youngsters. Pupils use the produce they grow to prepare, cook, then eat meals prepared with the school’s food technology teacher, promoting healthy eating habits and knowledge of the natural world from a young age. Gardening teacher Sarah Moore said the school grew diverse seasonal fruit and vegetables, including tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, capsicum, corn and pumpkins. On her mark, set to go Seaholme teenager Janae Mackrell is crowdfunding to make her dream of representing Australia at athletics in Canada come true. The 14-year-old student at Carranballac College in Point Cook has been invited to compete at the 2017 Track and Field Athletics Tour to Kelowna and Vancouver. Mackrell started in Little Athletics four years ago at Altona and now competes for Werribee Little Athletics and Western Athletics. The long-distance runner says her favourite events are the 1500 and 800 metres. She recently placed third in 1500 metres at the Victorian All Schools State Track and Field Championships, earning a place to compete at the Australian Junior Track and

Salvo teen on guard By Adem Saban A Hoppers Crossing teen has received the Salvation Army’s top honour for her work in the community. Zara Gibson has successfully completed the criteria to receive the Salvation Army Guarding and Legion Activities (SAGALA) General’s Guard Award. “I was a guard at SAGALA for four years, from 2012 to this year,” she said.

With the Christmas countdown on, the team at Wyndham City Salvation Army reminds residents to spare a thought for people in need at this time. Salvos’ captain Kim Howarth said volunteers will be out and about during December collecting money to support their social support programs. “We’ll have a gift-wrap station at the plaza, wrapping presents for a gold coin donation,” Ms Howarth said. “We’ve also got a band carolling at aged care facilities, and other places. We’ll be collecting money at intersections, too … all to raise money for our Christmas appeal.” Ms Howarth said all funds raised are used to help the most vulnerable in the community. “It all stays local, which is awesome, and supports the work of the Salvos here.” She said Salvos programs include its community meals program and serving meals at train stations. “We have a very generous community, and we are so thankful for that.”

“During my time, I completed many badges in the lead-up to earning the award. “I had to earn all five Southern Cross stars, as well as completing leadership work.” Among the many badges she has collected over the four years were those awarded for IT skills, budgeting and leading SAGALA nights. The 16-year-old, who is heading into year 11 at Thomas Carr College next year, said she was very proud to have received the award. In her time with the Salvation Army, a highlight has been taking 40 kilograms of stationery, tennis balls, socks and shoes to school students in South Africa. “It feels so good to make a difference to their lives,” she said. “It’s incredible to see how much of a difference something as simple as a tennis ball can make.” Zara is a third generation Salvo, proudly following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother before her.

Volunteer call-out
Safe waste as sewage plant gets upgrade
By Adem Saban A busy Werribee-based welfare agency needs hands on deck to help run its programs. Werribee Support and Housing chief executive Carol Muir said the agency needs more volunteers to help with jobs including collecting food from donors, unpacking boxes into fridges, and delivering food to homes. “We don’t function without volunteers,” Ms Muir said. “We welcome volunteers of all ages, from all walks of life. “We have asylum seekers volunteering here, volunteers who reflect all demographics of the local community.” She said volunteers can give as little or as much time as they choose. Werribee resident Karen Bishop has volunteered at Werribee Support and Housing for five weeks, saying the experience had been “enlightening”. Since she started, she’s helped out with food parcels and the Christmas program, stocking fridges with food. “I come in five days a week, and I absolutely adore it,” Ms Bishop said. “You see people coming in with their heads down … and when they walk out, it’s like they’re standing taller. “It’s great to be a small cog in that.” Jack said he looks forward to coming in to Werribee Support and Housing to volunteer. He helps in a range of ways, from delivering fruit and furniture, to gardening. “Whatever is required, I do it,” he said. “It is good to fulfil my day doing good things with good people. “When I finish, I go home happy I spent my day doing something good. It is very rewarding.” To volunteer with Werribee Support and Housing, contact the office on 9742 6452
The Western Treatment Plant is getting extra grunt to make sure it reprocesses more of the city’s sewage with less unsightly or unseemly “side-effects”. A new nutrient removal plant, slated for completion by the end of 2018, will increase the Werribee plant’s recycled water processing capacity by 140 megalitres – the equivalent of 56 Olympic-sized swimming pools – every day. It will also ensure nitrogen levels from sewage waters discharged into Port Phillip Bay are maintained at safe levels. The plant will stand alongside two existing processors but, according to Melbourne Water, will have a more energy efficient design and more advanced monitoring and control capabilities than the other two. The project manager of the capacity boost, Guy Fazzino, said the sewage is “so much more important than waste” – a valuable source of renewable energy and recycled water that both cuts energy bills and irrigates parks, market gardens and farms. “This important project will support a sustainable environment for all Melburnians, and truly reinforces Western Treatment Plant’s place as a world leader in technical and environmental innovation,” he said. New Year, newly neutered – Wyndham council will kick off 2017 by introducing mandatory cat desexing. From January 2, all cats in the city will need to be desexed by the time they are three months old and prior to registration. Undesexed moggies that are impounded will need to be desexed before they are released. Registered breeders that meet all requirements under the relevant legislation are exempt. Mandatory desexing is part of a range of measures Wyndham council is adopting to reduce impounded animal numbers, prevent unwanted cat pregnancies and better manage strays. MY WYNDHAM For Wesley Armstrong, netball rules … the 29-year-old Werribee resident has been involved with Wyndham Netball Association for most of his life, playing, coaching and umpiring. He talks netball, coffee and being a Lalor Hero with Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Wyndham? I actually grew up in Little River, but my family has been in Werribee for a number of generations. My grandparents and great grandparents were market gardeners, and I spent most of my childhood in Werribee. I moved to Werribee when I was 18. How did you get into netball? I was six … my sister was in a team of kids from Little River primary – my dad coached them – and then the younger siblings of that team wanted to play and needed an extra player, and my dad said I would play. It went on from there. I play wing attack. I coach, I umpire, I mentor, I play, I help with the administration of the association, I’m a board member – I’ve been on the board since I was 14. What do you like about netball?
You’ve been named a Lalor Hero, what does that mean? That was to do with my involvement in the association. I was a little bit in shock … I don’t do what I do for accolades or anything. I love watching the kids enjoy the sport that I enjoy.
(Charlene Macaulay)
I think it’s the social aspect. It’s like an extended family. Many of us have been there for many years and have basically grown up in the association, and have known, coached against and played against one another. Nearly all of the members that I see are more than happy to have a chat and ask how the family is.
Who inspires you? She’s a local, and her name is on one of the outside Eagle Stadium courts – Kerryn Flaherty. She was sort of my grandmother in

Candidates fail to declare Just 53 per cent of candidates vying for October’s Wyndham council election have declare who donated how much to their campaigns. Of a record-breaking 95 hopefuls competing for one of 11 spots at the election, only 51 submitted their election campaign donations report. The Local Government Act specifies every candidate in an election must return their declaration of campaign donations within 40 days of the poll. The fine for not doing so, according to the Act, can be up to $9000. All 11 successful councillors submitted their reports, but Wyndham council’s website indicates outgoing councillor Gautam Gupta, was one who did not disclose his sources.
Topping the list of declared donations was unsuccessful Chaffey ward candidate Bro Sheffield-Brotherton, who received $3374.43 from the Wyndham branch of the Australian Greens to fund the cost of corflute signs, two lots of leaflets and Facebook advertising. Failed Harrison ward candidate Monica Raizada received $2400, but did not specify what this went towards. (A candidate is not obliged to disclose this information.) Deputy mayor Kim McAliney received $1600 from a distribution company, which funded her artwork and printing, and Harrison ward’s Tony Hooper received $920 for website design, art and design work. NEW ARRIVALS
Star Weekly photographer Damjan Janevski met some new deliveries at Werribee Mercy Hospital. On behalf of all your Councillors I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. We all hope you get to enjoy a holiday break. Your new Council has been working at a very intense pace since we were sworn in just over a month ago. We’ve already gotten through a huge amount of induction and other work, and I’ve been impressed by the capacity of the new Council to come up to speed with current priorities and community needs. On behalf of Councillors I’d also like to thank our CEO and her dedicated team of staff for working so closely with us to ensure our first City Plan and Budget sets us up well to better meet future community needs while being more engaged and customer focussed. I end the year with great optimism as your Mayor. This is because even though it’s only been a month since we all came together, your Councillors have already formed a close, effective and even fun working relationship. This leaves me with a feeling it’s going to be easier for us to work for and with the community in the future. In the meantime stay safe and take care of each other. Regards, Henry

Wyndham is bustling with things to see and do, with activities and events to suit everyone
COMING EVENTS Christmas Day at Lightpoint Church Celebrate Christmas Day with carols, nativity scene, cake, gifts for the kids and a Christmas message. When: December 25, 9am-noon Where: Lightpoint Church, corner Boardwalk Boulevard and Bergamot Drive, Point Cook Cost: Free Age: All ages
Perfect match: pizza and play
What was that? Be captivated by a journey into the past during a theatrical tour of Werribee Park Mansion and its glorious surrounds. Hear stories about the Chirnside family and lifestyles of the Victorian era. When: January 7, 15, 20, 21 and 27, 8.30pm Where: Werribee Park Mansion, 306 K Road, Werribee South Cost: $42 adults, $35 Wyndham residents and concessions Age: 12+
As Christmas and New Year visitors arrive and school holidays get under way, hosts and parents are looking for entertainment ideas – like where to gather effortlessly for a good meal or to head for kid/teen-friendly activities. Edi De Pellegrin, managing director of WynCity, believes lots of locals and visitors over the holiday season will either newly discover or want to re-experience what the impressive venue has to offer.
Movies in Station Place Enjoy a family night out with an outdoor movie screening, music and activities for the kids. When: Saturdays, January 7, 14, 21, 28, 6-9pm Where: Station Place Cost: Free Age: All ages
“We have a 100-seat restaurant where our wood-fired pizzas are going gangbusters,” Edi says, “but we also do a mean parma, and the burger list packs a punch. Our house-made desserts are special, too.” Among other dishes, the menu covers pizza faves; tacos and arancini starters; and brioche bun burgers with the likes of slow-cooked pork shoulder, slaw and Swiss cheese. Premium beers are on tap and the bar is well stocked. “And it’s all family-focused, which also describes the rest of WynCity’s entertainment complex,”
For more information on events, visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/whats-on
adds Edi. “Kids, teens and whole families love our tenpin bowling experience, laser tag and bumper cars, as well as arcade games. They hit all the right notes for full-on fun.” Forget old-school tenpin bowling here. It still has all the fun of old but is now a much ‘bigger’ experience enhanced by state-of-the art technology. Lane-side service, 24 lanes, 42-inch TV screens, virtual waiters, comfy couches and the latest social interactive BES-X bowling games ... it’s all here. Laser tag, which involves ‘zapping’ opponents, is played in a glow-in-the-dark arena, with technology adding great effects to make the experience a fun-focused competition. And the battery-operated bumper cars are another chance to compete, with rewards for wins and, again, technology takes the old dodgem cars to a whole new level. Food, wine and song … a perfect French recipe It’s time to pack your pop-up sunshade and comfy beach chair, and imbibe some of that Frenchy joie de vivre (joy of living). The graceful Werribee Park Mansion precinct will once again be transformed by So Frenchy So Chic, the hugely popular food, music and party event that celebrates life and culture … a la Francaise. An eclectic mix of four music acts will bring distinctive French sounds to the event, whether you want to get up and dance, or kick back and soak up the sounds. Aussie fave Nouvelle Vague is considered royalty in the French contemporary music scene and brings a new-wave classic sound. Then there’s Bertrand Belin, a funkfolk crooner known for diverse rhythms and a danceable sound. Deluxe, an indie-cool group, is also known for getting people up to dance, with their blurring of pop, hiphop, funk, soul and big-band sounds. And The Limananas, a six-piece psychedelic band, put out some suave, heady and downright sexy beats. Great food is high on the agenda at So Frenchy. Oysters Unplugged, a local success story spanning five generations, brings hand-selected oysters, the perfect pairing with Laurent Perrier served at the next-door champagne bar. Hotel Gitan, from the Reymond dynasty, will create hand-held versions of its peerless French specialities – expect the likes of brochette de boeuf with volaille, lamb and cous cous. Mussels, cheese fondue, calamari, frites, crepes, foie gras sandwiches, macarons and other artisinal delights will make their appearance, along with last year’s winner – the delicious flammkuchen from the Alsace region. Picnic hampers for one, at $37.50, are curated by Ed Dixon Food Design and can be pre-ordered from the website – think crusty baguettes, salad jardiniere, cheeses, pate and stunning desserts. No French picnic would be complete without wine. Paul Louis Blanc de Blanc, reds and whites from Bordeaux and rosé from Provence will couple with, among others, Kronenbourg 1664 beer and special cocktails. And the kids? Under-12s get free entry and will be entertained with all sorts of activities, from croquet and drumming classes, to bubble-making and life-sized chess. Gates open at noon on Sunday, January 15, with 8.30pm the expected finish time. For further information, go to www.sofrenchsochic.com.au

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir waxes lyrical about fabulous Footscray fare … Count us among those who see the Indian food flowering in West Footscray as something quite fabulous – absolutely worth celebrating. We have our favourite food there, and favourite places, depending on our whim of the moment. One thing we do look for is a point of difference … and Tiwari Tea House has that in spades. While other Barkly Street eateries feature chaat – savoury Indian snack-type dishes – this place does nothing but … And the food is all vegetarian. Four of us get into the menu and come away happy … and perhaps even refreshed after eating snacky things so devoid of the heavy spicing and meatiness we often enjoy hereabouts. As the name makes clear, this place is also much about tea – so we go with that flow. Bennie and I have the masala chai ($9.95 for two), while our pals Julian and Christine have black ginger tea. It seems rather pricey for a couple of cups of chai. No matter – we enjoy all our food, and love some of it a lot. Big hits are our vada pavs ($6.95 each). Looking like tall, chubby burgers, these are bread buns stuffed with wonderful potato patties. The potato is heavily infused with turmeric, but otherwise mildly seasoned. That’s a lot of carbs, right? Yet the overall effect is much lighter than we may have been
TIWARI TEA HOUSE Address: 1/578 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8529 5960 expecting – and the flavours really hit the spot. We have two sets of crispy cutlets ($8.95 for two), served with dipping sauces of the tamarind and green chilli variety. The spinach-cheese cutlets are on the dull side … no such problem with the mixed vegetable varieties – they’re both stuffed with a mix that is colourful and tasty. Dahi puri ($7.95 for six) are close relatives of the more familiar pani puri. So closely related, I suspect, that I struggle to tell the difference, apart from the inclusion of yogurt – though there’s no doubt these sev-topped (crushed crispy noodles) flavour bombs are delicious! Aloo tiki chat ($8.95) is another big hit with all of us – we should’ve ordered double! Yes, more potato. Here, the spud rissoles appear to be even less seasoned, yet – nice surprise – have a semblance of chargrill flavour. They’re topped with a sticky jam/chutney, tomato, raw onion and more sev. These are very, very good. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

ike Hyundai itself, the Tucson is all grown up. Called ix35 in the previous generation, the latest medium SUV from the South Korean car-maker has shed its adolescent awkwardness and knuckled down. Hyundai started by stretching the new Tucson in most dimensions to turn it into a true medium SUV, thus allowing roomy five-seat accommodation and handy 488-litre luggage space. The stylish new look came courtesy of its European designers, while Australian engineers tweaked the suspension and steering for a supple ride and reassuring control. Now armed with a choice of three four-cylinder engines and four specification levels, the Tucson spans a wide range. Our test vehicle was the flagship Czech-built all-wheel-drive Highlander – yes, most Tucson variants are now built there – powered by Hyundai’s renowned 2.0-litre diesel packing 136kW of power (more than most of its rivals) hooked up to a six-speed auto for sparkling acceleration.
etting back to where you belong – whether it’s heading home from a winter break, or heading out on workaday duties – feels pretty good in a Tucson. There’s a sense that you’re in safe hands within its sturdy body, with plenty of power, yet you feel comfortably in control, thanks to its responsive steering and clear, accessible driving instruments. The safety aspect goes up a notch with automatic emergency braking and rear-traffic alert, which warns you if a car or pedestrian is approaching as you back out of a driveway or parking spot. Safe, roomy and comfy, it is clearly all about the family, with big doors and boot space to fit kids and all their stuff. Despite a nice line in leather, which also elevates the price, the interior is somewhat uninspired. All the design effort has gone into the eye-catching exterior of curves flowing around elongated window and headlight shapes, with a handsome grille and subtle chrome underscoring.

SPORT Tough road ahead for Werribee in 2017 Werribee will be able to sing I’ve Been Everywhere with substance after the completion of the 2017 VFL season. The Tigers will spend the whole of next season on the road while Avalon Airport Oval is shut down for a multi-million dollar redevelopment. It will be an inconvenience for the Tigers to lose home ground advantage in the short term, but the benefits in the long run will be astronomical for the club and the local community. So Werribee will have to put up with being a roadshow next season. The Tigers will play games in the city, suburbs and the country. They will find their way to tiny suburban venues and large AFL stadiums and everything in between.
The fun and games begin for Werribee on April 16, when they head to Torquay to play Geelong in their season opener. The Tigers’ first game in the west will be in round two, when they play a ‘home’ game against Footscray at the Victoria University Whitten Oval. Werribee, with its AFL alignment with North Melbourne, will take a game to Arden Street in round three, with Essendon to be the opponent. Then it will be a significant day for Wyndham when Werribee plays a home game in round four at Hogans Road Reserve in Hoppers Crossing against last year’s runners-up Casey Scorpions. With trips to Wangaratta, Frankston and Ballarat thereafter, just to name a few, it sure will be a busy season for the Tigers staff working behind the scenes.
While Werribee will be doing the hard yards next season, it will also get the chance to play two games at the state-of-the-art Etihad Stadium – both as curtain-raisers to AFL games. The first will be in round 10 when they meet Footscray, with the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne AFL game to follow; then in round 16 against Collingwood, with the North Melbourne and Collingwood game afterwards. Meanwhile, Channel 7 has extended its VFL television rights until the end of the 2018 season. The VFL had a 22 per cent increase in viewers from the previous season with an average audience of 72,000. There was also a record average audience of 266,000 for the VFL grand final with a peak of 396,000. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I am sure among the many presents under Christmas trees in the west there is a large number of red, white and blue gifts following the Bulldogs’ premiership. One I saw this week that fits the bill is The Doggies Almanac. For the past decade, an annual publication has been The Footy Almanac, a collection of stories written by footy fans about their experiences during the season at a game and their unique reasons for supporting their team. This new book is exclusively Bulldogs with some great stories about the 2016 season but also wonderful tales of how and why some people came to follow the red, white and blue. We have all marvelled at the players’ stories of the season, whether it was Murphy’s knee, JJ’s hamstring, Dale’s back or Bevo’s hairstyle. This book is stories from the rank and file supporters and it adds another layer to the rich tapestry that was the 2016 Western Bulldogs’ year. You can get it from bookshops or online at almanac. com ■ Jonathon Brown was a fearsome footballer in his days, leading the Brisbane Lions, and as a youngster he was a more than handy cricketer. The Warrnambool boy is about to don the whites again, this time for the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Brown chose footy over cricket even after he was invited to be part of a Victorian under-17 team while playing club cricket in his home town. Three AFL premierships might say he made the right choice. Another ’bool boy Michael ‘Tocka’ O’Keefe is the Clubbers’ coach and a former Footscray district cricket run machine. The Brown and O’Keefe families have known each other for years. Brown will make his debut in a one-day match on Saturday, January 21, at Walker Reserve, West Footscray, when the Clubbers take on Strathmore.
Tigers fall off the pace By Lance Jenkinson If Werribee is to feature in this summer’s sub-district cricket finals, it will have to make its run from outside the top six in the new year. The Tigers lost consecutive games for the first time this season at the weekend and settled in eighth place at the mid-season break. They have been on the losing side of the equation in three of their past four matches, rendering their three consecutive wins to start the season a distant memory. Werribee was hoping for a steadying win against Melton, but came up short by 23 runs on the road at MacPherson Park on Saturday. The Tigers main bowling weapons were ineffectual as Melton compiled 5-221 off 45 overs. The only success the Tigers had came through change bowlers Matthew Watt (2-48) and skipper Tom O’Brien (2-25). Werribee made a positive start with the bat, advancing to 84 before the loss of the first wicket.
The opening pair of Adam Alifraco (54) and Shaun Dean (81) thrived in a partnership and laid the foundation. But that was where the joy ended for the Tigers. Aside from O’Brien with 17 and Jonathan Burton with 11 not out, there was disappointment all round with a host of single figure scores. Werribee will get a chance to re-group over the festive season break with a critical one-day game to follow against ladder-leader Williamstown at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on January 7. Hoppers Crossing is one side that would not be welcoming the mid-summer break. The Cats have been on a roll lately with back-to-back wins following a hellish opening five rounds. It was once again the Cats bowlers who set up their victory, dismissing Bayswater for just 120. Off-spinner Hendro Dias was the pick of the Cats bowlers with 4-14, while opening bowlers Greg Kennedy (2-23) and Brett Smith (2-23) played key roles. Nothing ever comes easy with the bat for
Hoppers Crossing these days, but they managed to scrape home to win by a wicket. The Cats were in all sorts of trouble on 8-66 before Dias (22) and wicketkeeper Justin Goegan (31 not out) shared in a 54-run ninth wicket partnership. Hoppers Crossing remains second-last on the ladder, but only two wins outside the top six. A trip to Box Hill for a one-day game awaits the Cats on January 7. In the VTCA, Werribee Centrals remain winless in the north-west division after blowing a huge chance for a breakthrough win against Pascoe Vale Hadfield. Chasing a 118 victory target, the low on confidence Centurions were bowled out for 85. The Centurions were in range of an outright win, powering to 7-137 at 7.21 runs per over, but ran out of overs. In west A1, Seabrook easily defended its low total of 155, routing Bellbridge for 95. Chris Kavanagh, Thomas Flynn and Dilip Sarkhell took three wickets apiece for the third-placed Saints.

■ 2016 has again been a big sports year in the west, some would argue the biggest since 1954, and it’s hard to dispute that logic. I want to thank Chris Byrne and everyone at Westpoint Ford for their continuing support. Also to those who have emailed news and stories to me, thanks, and please keep them coming. Sport is a great leveller, and it mirrors life: full of highs and lows, which is why we love it and why I enjoy writing about it every week. Have a happy and safe Christmas and new year and I look forward to sharing more from the Doghouse in 2017.

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Medals honour teamwork By Lance Jenkinson Scouring the western suburbs to pinpoint the monthly recipient of the Don Deeble Rising Star award, the riches of young sporting talent in our own backyard quickly becomes apparent. Our sports people are lucky to have so many sporting choices available to them, so there is no gravitational pull to one over the other. Thus a variety of sports and skillsets are represented in the 2016 edition of this prestigious award. A common theme emerges in talking to the athletes; it’s that their own enthusiasm for the sport is matched by the support teams around them. The athletes appreciate the hours of work
that a coach dedicates to ensure they can perform to their optimum. The appreciation extends equally to the parent who draws the short straw in setting the alarm early for a morning training session or the friends who have pushed them in backyard battles over the years to instil a love of the game and become better players. This award is as much recognition for the people behind the scenes who allow the athletes to thrive as it is for their sporting achievements. There will be 10 finalists at the Deeble’s night of nights in January, but there can only be one winner. Which sport that person comes from is anyone’s guess. The Deeble selection committee will spend hours mulling over their decision.
For the finalists, there are only two sports with multiple nominees:, three from basketball – the most of all the sports – and two from athletics, a sprinter and a heptathlete. Football, cricket and hockey each have a young gun in the running, while the water sports will be represented in sailing and rowing. These young sports stars have gone beyond dominating their own patch of turf or water. They have gone on to represent Victoria and some have even pulled on the Australian shirt at international competitions. The Don Deeble Rising Star award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly. Who do you think will be the 2016 winner? Jamieson Battistella is July’s nominee for the Don Debble award. (Damian Visentini)
2016 Don Deeble Rising Star nominees Najvada George (Basketball)
Jamieson Battistella (Athletics – heptathlon)
Najvada George was spoilt for choice. A multi-sport talent, George had a tough decision to make: whether to pursue basketball or netball. She decided on basketball and it’s paid big dividends. The combo guard was selected to represent Victoria’s under-18s at the East Coast Challenge and national championships. She also donned the green and gold for Australia’s under-17s at the Oceania Games, helping her nation qualify for the world titles.
Jamieson Battistella is a gun in the heptathlon and its seven disciplines: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m. The Maribyrnong College student claimed gold at the Little Athletics Victoria state titles, came fifth at the under-17 Australian Heptathlon Championships and performed strongly at the Simplot Games in the US.

The Williamstown resident graduated from the cadets’ division to the 29er class, with his next goal being to compete in the 49ers, an Olympic class. Schofield claimed gold with teammate Tom Alexander at the Victorian State Championships and they claimed a creditable seventh at the Sailing World Cup.
Recruiters were salivating over the abilities of Daniel Venables in his top-age year with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. He landed on the West Coast Eagles’ list as a first round selection at the AFL National Draft, having produced his best football for Vic Metro in the AFL U18 national titles. The Keilor product starred in a title-winning side, claiming All Australian honours and kicking a crucial match-winning goal in one of the games.

She didn’t look back after making the move, claiming three gold medals and a silver at the Victorian Open Championships and then a gold at the School Sports Victoria regatta. Morris has taken her first step towards her long-term goal of competing internationally for Australia.
Cassidy Gould starred as a combo guard on Altona’s youth league team that won the premiership this season, her skillset returning averages of 12.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and two steals per game. Gould signed with the Melbourne Boomers development squad in the WNBL and joined the U19 Australian Gems training squad. Her coach, Randy Shanklin, says she will “trust the process” and let the experts assess what route her career will take.

Liberian-born Melvin Monleh has glittered in gold this year, claiming top place on the podium in 100m and 200m at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships. That wasn’t enough for him, though. He was also a crucial part of Victoria’s winning 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relay teams. Coach Steve Gaffney marvelled at how easily he beat some of the nation’s top under-15 sprinters. It’s landed Monleh a scholarship at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy.

Maddison Rocci (Basketball)
Claudia Beamish (Hockey)
The western suburbs has been a production line of basketball talent in recent years, Dante Exum and Ben Simmons having made it all the way to the NBA. The newest player to make her mark is Maddison Rocci whose talents have taken her to Canberra and the Australian Institute of Sport basketball program. The point guard has excelled for Victoria at all age levels since the under-12s and is now representing Australia in under-19s.
At just 13, Claudia Beamish has shown maturity beyond her years to compile an impressive list of hockey accomplishments. A regular with Werribee’s women’s team, she matches up favourably against players more than twice her age. A stand-out season in the under-16s won her the Altona team’s best-and-fairest award. Beamish represented Victorian under-age teams in indoor and outdoor hockey, sharing in two gold medals.

When you have the ball thrown your way in the Werribee first XI at age 16, you know your career trajectory is upward. When you have an offer to move to Footscray Edgewater in Premier Cricket, you know the scouts are watching. When selected in the talent-laden Cricket Australia under-age side, you know you’re earmarked as a player with star potential. All signs are pointing to a big career for fast bowler Matthew Watt, who this season represented Victoria at under-15 and under-17 levels.
