A new era The arrival of a new coach heralds the beginning of a new era for a sporting club, and when that coach is Mark “Choco’ Williams, it comes with excitement, expectation, and an “X factor”. For Williams, like many others, Werribee was a signpost on the way to and from Geelong or other more glamorous destinations. The offer to coach the Werribee Football Club was interesting but probably not top of the wish list. “I got a call out of the blue from the club asking if I would consider the job.” Williams recalls. “I thought it was probably too far to drive, and the facilities would probably be average. There were a lot of negatives, but I came down and was delighted with what I saw.” Williams has since discovered the many splendours of the City of Wyndham. “I’d never seen the Mansion before, and the Werribee River is spectacular.” Williams is building his team at Avalon Airport Oval. His assistant coaches include returning favourite son Michael Barlow as a playing midfield coach, former Richmond star Nick Daffy (forward), Jeff Andrews (backline), Jack Fitzpatrick (ruck/assistant midfield), and James Canale and Nick Condos (development).

Williams’ football pedigree comes from his father, Fos, a legend of football in South Australia and an AFL Hall of Fame inductee. Fos’ influence is seen today as Mark guides the young Werribee players at training. A large A-frame structure with a swinging boxing bag was invented by Fos and is a key part of Mark’s coaching drills. He had it made especially by the boys at Werribee Steel, longtime sponsors of the club. An AFL premiership, multiple best-and-fairest awards, club captaincy, and All Australian honours have earned Williams a reputation as a winner and an innovator, yet he retains some old-school ties. Williams’ objectives are crystal clear. “[I’m after] the relentless excellence,” he says.

“Everyone has to come with the desire to work in a team environment and show care for everyone. You must always be looking to improve, all the time. You need to put in the effort and hard work required. It is not easy – nothing is – but we will have some fun along the way as well.” The Mark Williams era has begun. It is full of promise, and there will be no beg-yourpardons, and that is something to look forward to.

President’s message A football club president with no wins and no points usually isn’t smiling or excited about addressing his members and supporters, but I am. Before the ball is bounced on Saturday night at Avalon Airport Oval for our first game, we have already achieved so much in season 2019. A new senior coach (an AFL premiership coach, no less) has taken the helm, and I wish Mark Williams every success in his time with us. We have new assistant coaches, players, and support staff, and we have a new opportunity. How we attack that challenge will define how the 2019 season pans out for our club. The football world talks a lot about individuals playing their role, and the importance of that tends to get lost in its overuse. A well-worn expression it might be, but it is relevant. I have a role to play, and so does everyone who is associated with our great club. Now is the time to embrace your opportunity to be part of the 2019 season. Be a member, be a vocal supporter, be a sponsor. Be involved. Come to games at our outstanding home ground, Avalon Airport Oval @ Chirnside Park. You can have a kick on the ground and see and hear our coach, Mark Williams, address the players at the quarter- and three-quarter-time breaks. I look forward to seeing you in the black and gold and singing our club song. Go Werribee! Martin Carter President

The not-so-good old days A premiership is what everyone at a football club wants, works for, and makes sacrifices for - to hold that elusive cup and savour that precious moment in time. Werribee has only one cup adorning its impressive trophy cabinet at the top of the stairs at Avalon Airport Oval, but it has not been short of chances to add to the tally in some memorable grand final losses. 1998: Springvale 11.17 (83) d Werribee 5.15 (45)

BUILDING BUILDING BUILDING MELBOURNE MELBOURNE MELBOURNE

Former club captain Trent Churchill (pictured) has some fond memories of the season: “We had a great side with ‘Frosty’ (Michael Frost), ‘Axe’ (Simon Atkins), ‘Satts’ (Paul Satterley), the Gowans twins, and Jimmy Puli. We were minor premiers, and just the confidence in every bloke in the team was enormous. Right across the board, it was the best team I have ever played in. 2001: Box Hill 13.13 (91) d Werribee 7.12 (54)

the senior coach at Box Hill and, of course, the man behind the club’s only premiership in 1993. Werribee life member Adam Taylor remembers the series well: “In 2001, I played my 100th game in the prelim final, when we beat Springvale, then lost to Box Hill in the Grand Final. They were coached by Donald McDonald, and that was my last game for the club.”

The man who masterminded Werribee’s downfall in 2001 was Donald McDonald,

2005: Sandringham 11.17 (83) d Werribee 11.8 (74)

Simon Atkins: “2005 was my first year as senior coach, and we made the Grand Final against Sandy. We were 24 points down at three-quarter time, and I thought they were shot. I remember Damien McCormack being tackled in the goal square. The goal would have put us in front. Someone said to me, ‘I thought you might have been jumping around a bit more,’ but it was such a new experience I tried to stay collected. We should have won that one. “In ’98 as a player, I thought we were the best team in the comp by far, but on the day nothing worked for us. We just didn’t have the zing we had had all year. It just goes to show.”

C L U B The club has a strong commitment to its local community.

A community story Lots of facts and figures are bandied about by politicians, bureaucrats and spokespeople about the multicultural make-up of the population of the City of Wyndham. The figures don’t lie, but they fail to tell the story of the people. Whether a person arrived in Wyndham from India, Sudan, or Edinburgh, they face challenges in assimilating to their new home. Avalon Airport Oval @ Chirnside Park is more than just a football ground – it’s a community hub. Numerous groups from across the city use the facilities for meetings and events, both sporting and non-sporting. It is home to the Wyndham Huddle, a program created to develop skills and help young people from diverse backgrounds to engage with the community. Sport and participation are the keys to breaking down barriers and allowing balanced social interaction. The Dosti Cup is a great example of Australian Rules Football bringing together two communities whose countries of origin have a history of confrontation.

The Dosti Cup (“Dosti” means “friendship” in both Hindi and Urdu) was played at Avalon Airport Oval last year and attracted a big crowd. It’s now an annual event supported by both the Indian and Pakistan communities of Wyndham. The Werribee Football Club runs a multitude of programs through local schools and is heavily involved in all-abilities, all-girl and multicultural Auskick clinics conducted at Avalon Airport Oval. Michael Barlow is back playing in the black and gold and expanding his off-field role, working with community development manager Chris Gallagher and multicultural development officer Mar Gattek. One of the most exciting initiatives is assisting Manor Lakes P-12 College to deliver its Football Development Program. The commitment to the local community by the Werribee Football Club is supported by community partner Pacific Werribee and diversity partner CDC Victoria.

WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY SPECIAL FEATURE

The business end of the season Werribee is just a pup in the landscape of the VFA/VFL as it enters its 55th season. By comparison, Port Melbourne and Williamstown have been going since 1874 and 1864 respectively. A suggested merge at the end of 1995 almost saw Williamstown and Werribee push into a forced marriage, and only two years ago, Port was facing a financial crisis. The support of local business has been crucial to all three clubs right throughout their history. 2019 sees Ballan Holden enter its 20th year as major sponsor of Werribee Football Club, an outstanding testament to a relationship that reaches beyond a mere commercial transaction. The Ballan family butcher shop in Watton Street was also a sponsor before the family moved into the car business, so 20 years is only part of the story. Just as players have a role in the success of the team on the field, the business and

“It has evolved from simply putting a sign on the fence and taking your money to a more planned program with better and more beneficial outcomes for both parties,” Penaluna says. “As a club, we pride ourselves on presenting ourselves in the best possible way, and we adhere to that same standard when presenting our much-valued sponsors. “The vast majority of our sponsors have been with us for a number of years, and as the city grows and new business arrives, we welcome them to come and see what the club has to offer.”
