Saddling up for a big crowd

Glenn Scott is keeping his eye out for rainclouds....

He reckons they’re the only thing that could possibly dampen the crowd size expected on TAB Werribee Cup Sunday, such is the anticipation and enthusiasm around this year’s community- friendly event.

As Werribee Racing Club’s general manager, Glenn said the renewed and heightened interest has been mainly due to a change the club requested from Racing Victoria around the date of the Cup. “It wouldn’t surprise us to see more than 5000 people trackside this year,” he said. “The response has been just terrific. We are buoyed by the crowd that attended our first meeting of the season last Tuesday [November 24] and we believe racegoers are keen to get back to Werribee after downtime of almost seven months. This break was brought about by the precise track preparation for the all the international horses, here in quarantine for the big spring races, that require the track to be spot-on.

“But the key reason we anticipate a big crowd at the Cup is changing the day to a Sunday, combining the TAB Werribee Cup with our Christmas Race Day event.

“It means locals and visitors from far and wide won’t have to take a day off work to attend. It also means it’s a day geared around whole families, with kids’ activities alongside all the attractions for their parents, young people and other racegoers.”

“It’s a fitting one because it [the Cup] will really be the main racing event on that weekend, from a prize money point of view including metropolitan racing.

We’re putting on a significant event.”

Organised sporting activities, jumping castle, mini golf, face-painting, food and the arrival of Santa (although not on a horse – Glenn scotched that rumour) are calculated to keep the kids entertained.

That’s when they’re not getting caught up in the live music and the thunder of hooves and all the colour of the track. And of course there will fashions on the field to add the real glamour to the day.

A mini marquee for 10 friends at $30 apiece is a brilliant way to ‘do the races’, and bookings are still open but they’re being snaffled up quickly. There’ll also be corporate marquees for the bigger groups but a simple picnic rug on the lawn, bubbly and beers in hand, is also a good way to go.

As they say in the classics, get your backside trackside. It will be a great day – even if rainclouds appear.

Champion hoof prints on the track “After enjoying a lovely run just off the pace, the mare was switched off the heels of the leading bunch and sprinted up to her rivals before drawing clear late to down Aquiver by three quarters of a length…..”

The mare referred to is none other than Makybe Diva who took out the Werribee Cup in 2002 before making history by winning three consecutive Melbourne Cups.

Carrying 51kg with jockey Luke Currie on board, Makybe Diva had the racing world’s eyes upon her, having won five out of her past six starts, but it was the crowd at the Werribee Cup who got to actually witness what this grand dame of the track was capable of.

The day’s spectators didn’t know then how high the David Hall-trained mare’s star would rise. But in the years since, many a local lays claim to being right there, pleased to have a link with the magic of Makybe Diva.

People around Werribee Racing Club say this year’s field is a strong one and will no doubt deliver on excitement. Mighty divas don’t come along every day but maybe, just maybe, there’s another track champ who will be thundering down the straight this year – and you wouldn’t want to miss that.

Betting tips to flutter by examined but no betting system exists that will work consistently, although chances can be improved by identifying certain factors, say some experts.

Children’s or family members’ birth dates, the jockey’s colours, the horse’s colour, jockey’s name, anniversary dates, dreams or simple hunches: each has been used to back a winner and many stick superstitiously with their chosen system. And why not? It can be as effective as any other, make a great post-race story and ‘prove’ one’s psychic peek into the doings of the universe.

• Look for a horse that came off a layoff in his last race. If he showed speed and faded at the end of the race, or has a closing running style and came up short at the finish, he might be a horse that needed a freshener and will improve in his next start.

Trackside fashion trends head down boho straights Getting frocked up for a trackside ‘occasion event’ such as the Werribee Cup can be a real treat, a chance to glam it up, to see and be seen. We love the girlie thing, no matter our age: shopping for an outfit and all the accessories, finding out what our friends are wearing, anticipation of fun.

We plan which essentials to stow in our stylish bag, or, heaven help us, a clutch - able to carry only lippy and one tissue. Where will we put our hairbrush, sunscreen, pain killers, mints, hand disinfectant, touch-up makeup?

But choosing the outfit, one you love and, just as importantly, feel comfortable in is the really big-deal pre-Cup decision. And sometimes it’s a challenging one, so here are some tips from industry fashionistas for what’s on-trend at the track: Flowerchild bohemian vibe While structured and tailored is always en pointe, this racing season we’re seeing flowing maxi dresses, especially paisleys and florals, floppy wide-brimmed hats, hemline tassels, fringing and 1970s-look jumpsuits. Floral halos crown the look if you’re into a vibrant young look.

Lace at the race Lace is all over red carpets and it translates well to the racetrack. It’s seen on those flowy maxi dresses and blouses with a hint of hippy, and it’s the favourite clothing trim and a star in sculptured headpieces.

It’s a princess thing Headbands with a right-royal twist are all the go, with interpretations ranging from tiara styles in gold, bronze and coppers through to leather headbands sporting gold leaves, and spiky gunmetal versions.

Whatever your age, some kind of hat or headpiece is a track essential – but word on the street is that the whole fascinator thing is over.

Yellow and pink is a link Put these two colours together for a bold on-trend statement. No one wants to be outdone by blooming roses in their keepsake photos, so bright yellows and mustards and shades of pink on the pretty side are great race-day choices.

No matter which colours you opt for, outfits should not include bare midriffs or lower back – they’re for a nightclub.

A final piece of not-so-random advice: break in your shoes before the big day. Blisters are even worse than a too-small clutch.

Race day picnic is a fine tradition Having a picnic taps into a rich vein of tradition. It’s the kind of gathering that evokes childhood memories of Sunday drives to the country, stopping by a river and getting out the blanket on which to spread the homemade goodies.

A picnic at the races is also a traditional affair, one that has people of all ages ready to get into the spirit of the day. It’s quite simply the best way for a group of friends to create their home base from which the whole day’s fun and festivities flow.

There are local outlets where you can buy a hamper packed with eat-treats. But if you do want to prepare your own hamper - a way to get exactly what you and your friends like to eat and probably costing less - here are a few ideas to help inspire you: 1. A selection of dips, with parmesan toasts or grilled flatbread to serve, are always a good starter. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, capers and dill on top of crispy crackers also work well.

2. Cold chicken or ham salads are always welcome – scatter through cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumber at the last minute to avoid sogginess.

3. Sandwiches or wraps never go out of style; try a roast chicken, rocket, dill and mayo combo.

4. Fluffy scones are a quintessential picnic dessert – have pots of strawberry jam and whipped cream ready. Or Lindt Mint Intense chocolate is a decadent match with coffee.

5. Platters with a variety of cheese, quince paste, olives and water crackers are a great finish or anytime snack.
