Macedon fire warning By Jessica Micallef
Kids shine bright Diggers Rest Primary School pupils walked away from class last Friday covered in every colour of the rainbow – all for a good cause. The school organised a ‘Colour Run’ to raise money for its 2020 school musical. More than 280 pupils were covered head to toe in dry paint and sprayed with water from the local CFA to create a vibrant scene. Education support teacher Fiona Cortese said the colour run has helped raise $10,000 for the production. “We’ve done a colour run before, but it’s so much bigger this year,” Ms Cortese said. “The kids are pretty pumped, it’s an exciting day for them.” The school production of The Wizard of Oz will take place in September next year and the growing school is hoping to get as much of the school involved as possible. “It’s a great musical to get the whole school involved,” Ms Cortese said. “Each grade will perform a song in the musical and because our numbers have grown we need a bigger venue which means more fundraising. “We’ll have rehearsals early next year, but we’ve started getting the ball rolling and seeing which kids want to put their hand up to audition for a part, but the excitement is already starting to build.” Ewen McRae

Macedon Ranges residents are urged to “prepare for the worst and hope for the best” during the bushfire season. While parts of New South Wales and Queensland are feeling the full force of the catastrophic damage a bushfire can cause, Macedon CFA captain Ross Luke is encouraging residents to use the events as a “warning”. “We’ve always got the potential every year for that type of activity to occur down here,” he said. “While it still might be very green here in parts of the Macedon Ranges, the conditions in the forest are extremely dry. “We’ve already seen fires creep through areas in the forest due to the dry conditions.” Mr Luke said residents and visitors should not become complacent. “I always urge residents to have a fire plan,” he said. “Do what you can to prepare your property to make it easier for us to protect your property in the event of a fire. “Clean up any fuels around your house such as firewood, cut grass and have a fire plan in place so you know what your trigger points are on some of the bad days.” The fire danger period in the Macedon Ranges started on November 25. Fire restrictions are in place, which means burn-offs and open fires are banned without a written permit. However, Mr Luke said it would be “unusual” for permits to be issued. “For any burn offs or any fire that is of suspicious nature such as unattended campfires … police will be attending. “People should consult the CFA website for further information.” Macedon Ranges council is doing its bit to help residents prepare their homes in the event of a bushfire. Free green waste disposal is available at the council’s transfer stations at Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. The council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden said now was the time for families to prepare their property and have a prepared bushfire survival plan. “The introduction of the fire danger period is a key trigger for people to prepare their properties and review their bushfire survival plan,” he said. “Events in New South Wales and Queensland are a timely reminder that preparation is everyone’s responsibility and that early action can help prevent fires threatening lives and property.” Details: cfa.vic.gov.au.home

Mayor wins second term By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges councillor Janet Pearce is looking forward to “advocating on important issues” in the region after she was voted in as mayor for a second term. The West ward councillor was re-elected at a special council meeting last Wednesday. She will be joined by councillor Mandi Mees as deputy mayor for a second term. It was a tight contest between Cr Pearce and Cr Natasha Gayfer for the role of mayor, with Cr Pearce winning a majority of votes 5-4. Looking back at her first year as mayor, Cr Pearce said it was a “tremendous honour” to
work alongside her fellow councillors. “We are diverse and that’s a really positive thing,” she said. “We support and participate in our community in many different ways. We listen to people in our community and we all make what we believe are the best decisions for the whole community. “We are aware of … providing value for ratepayers money and being inclusive of our community.” Cr Pearce said becoming more involved with the community was the “highlight by far” during her first term as mayor. “It [the community] is … the most enjoyable aspect of the mayoral role,” she said.
“Thank you for all the invitations and opportunities to attend, celebrate, meet, listen to people’s stories and be part of the wonderful community. “We have a short time on council and I want to be out and about hearing your thoughts.” Cr Pearce said there had been “extremely high level, important work” done during her first term as mayor. She said she was committed to continuing the work. “We have made innovative and brave decisions in the waste and recovery area, truly epitomising the definition of teamwork and we are seen as leaders in Victoria in this area,” she said.

Celebrating our history on film Take a step back in time at the Kyneton Town Hall. Next month, a series of vintage films will be screened at the hall to celebrate its 90th year and highlight its beginnings as a movie theatre in 1929, and its civic and community significance. Throughout the month, classic movies, news reels and local content from the 1930s to the 1970s will be played on the big screen for audiences to reminisce, or enjoy for the first time.
The fi lms will portray social, economic and cultural events that mark each decade. The screenings will begin on Tuesday, December 10 with 42nd Street highlighting the 1930’s and The Letter showcasing the 1940s. On Wednesday, December 11, classics including Pat and Mike and The Hustler will represent the 1960-70, while on Thursday, December 12, Sunday Too Far Away will highlight the 1970s. There will also be a special screening of
Australian TV show Homicide (The Kooranda Killing) to pay tribute to the late Anne Phelan who was a prominent Australian actress and long-time Romsey resident. Session times on all three days are 10.30am and 2pm. Running times for each fi lm are about one hour. To book a free ticket, contact 1300 888 802 or kthtickets@mrsc.vic.gov.au
Macedon Ranges council is taking a stand against violence. The council is taking part in a statewide campaign, Respect Women: Call It Out, during the 16 Days of Activism – an international campaign to challenge violence against women. Between November 25 and December 10 the council will run a social media campaign to encourage residents to share their stories on how they call out disrespectful behaviours. Residents can comment on these social media posts or post a comment on a display board at the Kyneton Sports and Aquatic Centre. The campaign is supported by the Municipal Association of Victoria and is funded by Respect Victoria – an organisation dedicated to preventing family violence and violence against women. The council’s community wellbeing director Karen Stevens said the campaign is aimed at raising awareness that bystanders can play a powerful role in helping change behaviour. “Everyone has a role to play in calling out disrespect towards women,” she said. “We shouldn’t wait for somebody else to do the right thing.” Those who post stories will have a chance to win prizes including a six month membership at the Kyneton or Gisborne Aquatic Centre. Winners will be drawn at random and announced on the last day of the campaign. Jessica Micallef

Cancer’s long walk
New discovery for students
By Jessica Micallef Greg Morvell is an avid walker. He’s travelled to Tasmania, Nepal and New Zealand to tackle some of the world’s greatest walking tracks. But a walk around Melbourne’s CBD will be like no other. The Bullengarook resident was diagnosed with oropharyngeal – cancer at the back of the throat, in 2010. A tumor located at the base of the tongue meant surgery wasn’t an option. Instead, he endured more than six months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. “The upside was I haven’t had any of those side effects that you get from surgery,” Mr Morvell said. “A lot of people have mouth cancer and it can get pretty messy in the mouth. “The downside was I had to do quite a bit of chemo and radiotherapy. It wasn’t very pleasant.” Once his treatment was complete, Mr Morvell wanted to begin walking again. “My wife and I have been walkers for a long time. We used to do a lot of overnight bushwalks until we had children,” he said. “The prompt to start walking again came from the cancer treatment. After I finished treatment, we decided we would have a weekend away in Tasmania. There’s a walk you can do there. It’s called the Overland Track. “We thought perhaps we aren’t too old to start doing this again. We got fit, which was a great way to recover from the treatment. “Since then we have walked in Nepal and New Zealand.” Since his recovery, Mr Morvell has spent his time volunteering for the Cancer Council. He will also be participating in the organisation’s Walking Stars event next month – a

21-kilometre evening stroll around Melbourne to raise funds for the organisation. “I wanted to give back in some way,” he said. “They have a program called Cancer Connect which is a phone support program. I’ve been doing that since 2013. “One of my goals is being able to get on the phone and say, ‘I had treatment a few years ago and guess what, I am still here.’

Lancefield Primary School pupils are enjoying a new discovery learning centre. Earlier this month, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the school to officially open a $288,900 upgrade of its old library which was transformed into a new discovery learning centre. The centre, named the Wil-im-ee Moo-ring Centre, will have a science focus, to help pupils draw on the area’s unique natural history and megafauna. The centre will also support the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. Ms Thomas said the centre was a “fantastic addition” to the school. “The new discovery learning centre is … a place where Lancefield students can learn about science and discover new things about the natural history of their community,” she said. “The discovery centre will support the school’s science program and the students’ interest in Lancefield’s rich Wurundjeri heritage and the unique megafauna site. “It’s been fantastic to work with principal Jo Edmond to support the vision for a discovery learning centre at Lancefield Primary School. “These works are about more than giving Lancefield students the school facilities they deserve. It’s about helping build community pride in a great local school.” Jessica Micallef

Going nuts over award By Jessica Micallef Nutbug is savouring the sweet taste of success. The Sunbury cafe won the New and Emerging Business Award at the Hume Business Awards earlier this month. Owner Praveen Vegunta said his win was “inspiring” for other small and new businesses. “It has not even been a year, we’ve been here since January,” he said. “It [the award] make us more motivated.” Mr Vegunta said locals and visitors have embraced his business with open arms.

There are almost 10 to 15 regular customers that come here every week which makes us think that we should create something new … so that it’s not the same menu. “We have to make them excited to come back.” Nutbug specialises in a traditional American cuisine – fried chicken and waffles. Mr Vegunta credited his success to his dedication to fresh food and his unique menu. “Instead of using a burger bun, we use a waffle for all our burgers,” he said. “With a bun, you can’t bake it on the spot. With waffles, we make it on the spot and everything you bite into is fresh. From hot plate to plate straight away. “That’s the fresh concept that we want to give to people.” Another passion of Mr Vegunta’s is reducing

Craig Dodson is strapping on the cricket pads and travelling the nation with hopes to spread awareness about the importance of mental health among men. A passionate cricket fan and writer, Mr Dodson will travel to 10 cricket clubs in Australia this summer, including the Rupertswood Cricket Club in Sunbury. During each visit, Mr Dodson will play a game of cricket before speaking about the importance of reaching out for help when times get tough. “After each match, we go to the clubrooms and I give a brief chat about the project,” he said. “Rupertswood was on top of my list because of the fantastic history as the birthplace of the Ashes.” During his travels, Mr Dodson is hoping to raise $10,000 for not-for-profit mental health foundation Gotcha4Life. SECTION
MY PLACE Sunbury’s Graeme Lofts has written a new book Family Business Success Stories, detailing the journeys of eight Australian family-owned businesses. He spoke with Jessica Micallef.
What are you passionate about? From the age of eight years, when learning the recorder was mandatory in primary school, I’ve been passionate about music and since then have had formal training in clarinet, singing, guitar and most recently drums. I’ve tried, with limited success, to teach myself the banjo and piano. I’m also passionate about education and I believe that all children should have equal opportunity to learn in a safe environment. Tell me about your book Family Business Success Stories. Family Business Success Stories traces the journeys of eight of Australia’s oldest family-owned businesses, including Coopers Brewers, Furphys of Shepparton, Brown Brothers, Dymocks and Bulla Dairy Foods. All of the family businesses featured in the book are more than 100 years-old and their stories reveal inspirational examples of entrepreneurship, resilience and perseverance, often in the face of massive setbacks and heart-wrenching tragedies. The way in which they have stood the test of time provides interesting reading as well as some valuable lessons.
What inspired you to write the book? I had already written a book, called Heart & Soul: Australia’s First Families of Wine, about 12 winemaking families which was published in 2010. My wife Dianne and I interviewed family members of each wine business and their responses revealed astounding passion, resilience and strong family values. That experience got me hooked on family-owned businesses. It was seven years later that I read a newspaper article about Bulla Dairy Foods and found to my surprise that the company was family-owned. The idea for Family Business Success Stories was further inspired when I discovered that about 70 per cent of all Australian businesses are family-owned and together they employ more than 50 per cent of the Australian workforce. How long did it take to write? It took two years between the initial idea and publication. During the first year I had to work out which family businesses to include and find the right publisher. Once I signed, the serious research, interviews and writing began. It was very intense but the interviews with the amazing people who have kept their businesses afloat provided more than enough motivation. What would people be most surprised to know about you? I really struggled with science and mathematics in my first two years of secondary school. My teachers during those years would certainly not have believed that I would complete a science degree with a major in physics, become a science, physics and mathematics teacher and write science and physics textbooks.

13 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 26 November, 2019
SPORT Dragons look to their bowlers to secure another win Gisborne will have to bowl well to keep its winning run alive in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The below strength Dragons put in a solid performance with the bat, bowled out for 244 with an over remaining. Coach Gavin Mackay said the score was a bit below what they would have liked. “It’s probably a bit short, but we do have a few out,” he said. “Ideally we would have liked to score 300. When we had two or three wickets down with Jarryd [Vernon] and Mick [Allen] back in the sheds, we thought about 230 would be an OK score. “To get 244 wasn’t a bad score in the end.” Mick Allen was the star for the Dragons making 99 at the top of the order. Mackay said Allen was disappointed not to go on and get triple figures. What pleased Mackay the most was the way some of the younger players stood up. Sam Mackay (46) and Josh McDonald (44
not out) both produced handy contributions to help push the total up. “We have a bit of depth, which is handy when you get yourself in a bit of trouble,” he said. “We had six under-19s play and there’s plenty of kids in the twos as well. “They’ve got the opportunity to develop and we’ve got good batsmen who can help them. “A lot of times with kids they can get a couple of good shots and the concentration dips. Between overs the experienced players keep them on track and it’s invaluable for them.” The Dragons have a challenge ahead of them this week, with United one of the better batting sides going around. Already missing Joel Garbutt, Tom Sanders is unlikely to bowl due to a back injury. Mackay said they still had plenty of bowlers who could pick up the slack. “We’ve got three spinners and four other bowlers,” he said. The Dragons sit on top of the ladder
undefeated after six rounds. Mackay said they had ridden a bit of luck, getting results in rounds where other teams had to settle for draws. He said they were looking forward to some challenges in the next couple of weeks against some of the top sides. “We need to be challenged, that’s what cricket is all about.” A familiar face made an appearance in the Dragons’ second side on Saturday. Pat McKenna, who captained Australia’s under-19 team before concentrating on football, probably would have played in the firsts had he been available next week. McKenna was the standout with both bat and ball. “We wish he could play all the time. He’ll maybe play the T20s.” Tara Murray Josh McDonald stood up with the bat late. (Mark Wilson) 201263_22
Cannon a draft bolter
RDFL Rupertswood’s future in the Riddell District Football Netball League is up in the air. At a club vote on Wednesday night, 80 per cent of members were in favour of the club switching to the Essendon District Football League from the 2021 season onwards. Sharks president Brad Pietromonaco said it was still early stages. The club will now look further into the possibility of making the move. A further vote will be held down the track to make a final decision. For more, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports
By Tara Murray Twelve months is a long time in football. Just ask the Calder Cannons’ Harrison Jones. This time last year, the 18-year-old wasn’t on the draft radar, let alone sure that football was the sport that he wanted to concentrate on. Fast forward to the end of the 2019 season, Jones’ name is among those spoken about as a draft pick, with a sneaky chance of being a first round pick this week. Jones said he never imagined that he would find himself in this position. “I was playing cricket with school and focusing on cricket,” he said. “I wasn’t playing practice matches for the Cannons. I was pretty good at both sports, but not outstanding at either. “I never thought it would come this far. Once I got the first game under my belt at nationals, I thought this was it. Footy started to take over.” After missing the practice matches, Jones was quickly combining Cannons commitments and school footy. Jones played eight matches with the Cannons and admits he didn’t set the world on fire. “I really enjoyed my year, but I didn’t get to play a lot of games with school and metro,” he said. “The team gelled really well, [but] overall my performance was pretty poor.” It was school football at PEGS where Jones started to show what he can do. He was added to the Vic Metro squad early in the year. He would later make the final squad and play all four games and be one of Vic Metro’s better players at nationals. He said his performance was “OK”. “Metro was a big shock and I’m proud of myself,” he said. “I didn’t expect it. “I showed promising signs, but I couldn’t piece it all together for a whole game. I really enjoyed it and got shown what it takes to play against the best in the country.” Jones said the biggest thing he took from the championships was that he needed to work on his consistency. With the mindset of wanting to be drafted, the tall forward ticked another box, being invited to the AFL national combine. He was one of the best performers at the combine, reaching a 21.4 in the yo-yo test, while completing the two kilometre time trial in 6.32 minutes. Jones said he set himself a couple of goals at the combine which he achieves. Jones said he moulds his game on Jack Gunston and Jack Reiwoldt, with their running and ability to take strong marks – something he sees as strengths in his game. It’s been a busy time for the Gisborne

RDFL The Riddell District Football League’s best player is on the move. Jaidyn Caruana, who was the runaway winner in this year’s Bowen Medal, has decided to leave Romsey and head to rival Diggers Rest. For more on Caruana’s move, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports
Bowls Sunbury’s Jay Bye-Norris was the toast of the Bowls Victoria Victorian Open last week. Bye-Norris had a good week across the board, topping it off with victory in the men’s singles, 21-8 against Zac Woning. Bye-Norris also received the 2019 Vic Medal for the best performing bowler of the tournament. He also made the last four of the men’s triples and the last eight of the mixed pairs.

resident since the combine, as he finished year 12 exams. He spent a few days away last week in Echuca with mates. “Exams finished up last Friday [two weeks ago], so I’ve been done for awhile. I’ve been catching up with mates and I had my wisdom teeth out.” Jones, who is an Essendon supporter, said he will watch the draft at home and is excited to see what happens.

He said he was hoping someone would take a risk on him. “I’m a bit nervous, as I’m not sure what is going to happen. “Hopefully I get picked up, I’m not too fussed where I go. I’m happy to go anywhere. “There’s been a lot of positive signs coming from me. Hopefully a full pre-season under my belt and time in the gym, I can start to show my potential.”
Rupertswood has already claimed first innings points against Macedon in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield. Rupo bowled Macedon out for just 44, with Joel Muir taking 4-8. Rupo was 4-191 in reply at the end of day one. Gisborne is on top after day one against Sunbury United. The Dragons are 1-74 in reply to 124.
