Riddells temple bid By Jessica Micallef

A colourful conversation Matt Gleeson is hoping a bright pink moustache shaved on the side of his head will start a conversation many men struggle to have. The community partnership and engagement officer at Sunbury Community Health has ditched the razors and will let his facial hair do all the talking as part of this year’s Movember. “I have a passion about men’s mental health. I work on initiatives around youth mental health and gender equality” Mr Gleeson said. “I think the way that we construct masculinity and the way that men are socialised, it can be a bit of a barrier to men seeking the kind of assistance that they might need.” Mr Gleeson is no stranger to crazy hairstyles, he says his mohawk has become somewhat of a “trademark”. But he is hoping his new look encourages men to speak up about their mental and physical health. “It’s a good starting point for discussions with men about what [Movember] it’s about,” Mr Gleeson said. “Men are historically bad help seekers whether it be about their physical health or their mental health. There’s no shame in seeking help. In fact, getting onto things early can save a lot of grief down the track.” Mr Gleeson and seven colleagues are using Movember to raise money for men’s health. “We just clocked over $4000 … They [Movember] have particular focus areas like prostate cancer and men’s mental health.” To donate: mvmbr.co/2qtDMgX

A Buddhist temple and two cabins to host weekend retreats has been proposed for Riddells Creek. Macedon Ranges council received a planning permit application to build a place of worship and accommodation in the form of “re-locatable cabins” at 1483 Riddell Road. The application proposes a 259.2 square metre Buddhist temple and two cabins to accommodate up to 10 people. The site would be used to host two weekend retreats each month. A planning report states the proposed cabins would be “of those found in a caravan park – prefabricated and brought to the site”. The Planning Professionals lodged the application with the council in September. The subject site is about 8.1 hectares and is one kilometre north-east of Riddells Creek. Riddells Creek resident Ben Miqueu said a Buddhist temple would be a welcome addition to the town. “We like diversity in the area and having a Buddhist temple is no different to having any other place of worship,” he said. “It would have very minimal impact. In fact it would have a positive impact. It would bring tourists and visitors to the town. “I do hope they [the council] take into consideration the vast majority of people who … are willing to welcome these types of developments.” However, Riddells Creek resident Michelle said the proposed plan was not “feasible” and did not fit in with the town’s rural character. She said the temple would be better suited in the heart of Riddells Creek. “It’s [Riddell Road] a 100km/h zone,” she said. “There is no proposal on widening the road to accommodate all the traffic that would come in and out. “Move it into town where there is more safety, where it’s a 60km/h or 50km/h zone, where the comings and goings are slower. “We welcome anybody but I don’t think where they are planning this is really good. The outskirts of Riddell are one household properties with cows, horses, sheep and alpacas,” she said. “The look of the temple is definitely not in keeping with the local area.” The council’s planning and environment director Angela Hughes was unable to say when a decision will be made on the application. She said the council was considering all submissions and waiting for information from referral authorities.

Dog breeder banned for 10 years By Jessica Micallef A Gisborne dog breeder has been fined $7000 and banned from selling dogs for 10 years after being found guilty of running an unregistered business. Kyneton Magistrates Court earlier this month heard that the business was being run from a Panorama Drive address in Gisborne. The breeder faced 12 charges relating to breaches of Local Law number 10 – breaches of Domestic Animals Act (DAA) and a breach of the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animal Act (POCTA). Macedon Ranges council local law officers attended the property on multiple occasions between June 2016 and March 2018 and found up to 20 whippet and pharaoh hound dogs housed in collapsible wire cages. The court has prohibited the breeder from

keeping and selling dogs and working in a domestic animal business for 10 years. The breeder is able to have four dogs as pets which must be registered with the council and undergo an annual health check and monitoring. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, the breeder was also disqualified from owning or being a person in charge of dogs or in charge of breeding and selling dogs for 10 years. The council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden said the court action

demonstrated the council’s commitment to responsible pet breeding and ensuring the safety and welfare of dogs and cats. “Council officers work with locals and state authorities to monitor domestic animal businesses,” he said. “We will investigate any reports regarding illegal dog or cat breeding facilities. “If you have any concerns or suspect any illegal activity is occurring, we encourage you to contact us.” Report suspicious animal activity to 5422 0333 or at mrsc@mrsc.vic.gov.au

Support for veterans’ legacy

Romsey Neighbourhood House is organising a human chain event to take a stand against violence. (Damjan Janevski) 200465_01

Ready to unite against violence The Romsey Neighbourhood House is taking a stand on violence against women. The house will host a Sisters U Night evening, and attempt to form a human chain from Lancefield to Romsey, as part of the 16 Days of Activism, an international campaign to challenge violence against women. Home community member Kathryn Chai said women will be treated to a night of pampering and will be provided with information services at Sisters U Night. “It’s a night to support women,” she said. “There’ll also be guest speakers. We’ll have some talking about empowering women,

self-esteem. The event is also to talk about healthy relationships. We are going to have … counsellors on site. “It’s such a heavy topic so that’s why we are promoting this as a wellbeing event.” The entry fee from Sisters U Night will go to assisting women in emergency situations. All locals are being invited to stand together in solidarity by forming a human chain between Lancefield and Romsey. “Community awareness is absolutely key to ensure our community knows what this – people standing together – looks like,” Ms Chai said.

She estimates that up to 4000 people are needed to form a chain between the two towns. “We will start in the middle point between Romsey and Lancefield and spread out both ways,” Ms Chai said. Sisters U Night is on November 29 at 96-100 Main Street, Romsey from 5.30pm. Cost $20 per person. The human chain begins on the corner of Boundary and Melbourne Lancefield roads on December 8 at noon. Register for both events at bit.ly/2QjlTfl and bit.ly/372kmR0

Macedon Ranges associations supporting past and present veterans have received a funding boost. The Woodend RSL sub-branch has received $9000 in state government grants to install solar panels, while a further $9500 will go towards the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross for the annual Anzac Day service. The Macedon Ranges Group of Bendigo Legacy – an organisation which provides social outings and assistance to war widows in its care – has received $5000 to pay the heating bills for disadvantaged widows. The Lancefield Mechanics Institute received $7025 to preserve the World War I honour boards, which will be remounted and installed in the main foyer of the hall. Eighty-four projects across Victoria will share in $1.4 million as part of the funding, to ensure memorials are preserved, veterans are commemorated in services and education and training programs are provided to veterans to remain engaged in the community. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed the funding. “Th is funding is wonderful recognition of the work these Macedon Ranges associations do to ensure we remember all those who have served,” she said. Veterans Minister Robin Scott said it was important to protect the legacy of veterans for future generations. Jessica Micallef

Anger over break-ins By Jessica Micallef A series of break-ins has left employees at St Mary’s Community Store heartbroken. According to store co-ordinator Kristine Green, the store’s outdoor storage bins were broken into and ransacked three nights in a row earlier this month. Ms Green said clothes in the bin were left scattered on the ground and on top of the bins. “Our padlocks had been cut off, they’re coming around with bolt cutters,” she said. “The screws are taken out, they’ve got the

bolts off and they’ve also bent the lids back – so they come prepared. “This is just destructive. It’s our safety that we are worrying about and it’s happening too often.” Ms Green said she had to “constantly” change the locks and clean up the mess that was left behind. “If you buy them [the locks] in bundles they could be … $50 and it’s just an inconvenience,” she said. “We will be getting something to actually make the bins stronger but we don’t know what

to do. They have cut through the padlocks, through the thick steel. So what do we do, make it out of concrete? “It’s really annoying. We work our butts off for charity.” Ms Green said it appeared that no clothes had been stolen, but piles of clothes were left on the ground each time. “None of the stuff has been taken, it’s all there,” she said. “We don’t put anything but handbags, shoes, slippers and clothes [in the bins]. If they want clothes … I’d give it to them. Employee Janet Chadwick after the break-in. “Something needs to be done.” (Jessica Micallef) 200629_07

Cheers for wine wins Chris Cormack has again enjoyed the sweet taste of international success. Tylden’s Pegeric Wines took home three trophies at the 2019 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition earlier this month. The vineyard’s 2008 pinot noir won a trophy for best wine paired with a Vietnamese coconut layer cake and the 2018 riesling was awarded two trophies for the best wine paired tempura shrimp and hai nan chicken rice. Vineyard owner Mr Cormack said he was thrilled with his achievements. “It was pretty amazing,” he said. “Just to win a medal is good. To win a trophy is even better. “I’ve got about 1.5 hectares of vines and I was competing against some of the biggest wineries in the world. The competition is highly regarded around the world.” Pegeric Wines is no stranger to success at the

international competition. Its 2007 pinot noir won the trophy for the best wine with Korean grilled beef at the competition last year. “It’s one of the only competitions in the world where you can have wine and food matching,” Mr Cormack said. “It’s good to compete on the world stage and not just against your peers.” The wine lover said he had his sights set on next year’s competition. “Hong Kong is one of my favourite cities in the world,” he said. “It’s a fusion of all different foods and wine types. It has quite a vibrant food and wine culture.” Jessica Micallef Vineyard owner Chris Cormack with one of the awards. (Shawn Smits) 200515_02

Cuppa for cancer cure Homebaked goods and a cup of tea will be on the menu at St Andrew’s Uniting Church this weekend. The Sunbury church will host its annual Biggest Morning Tea on Sunday and organiser Carole Simpson is inviting all to attend the charity fundraising event for the Cancer Council. “The only thing better than a cup of tea is sharing a cuppa with loved ones and friends,” she said. “Your generosity means more children will grow up with their parents [and] husbands will grow old with their wives.” This year marks the ninth morning tea the church has hosted.

Business survey

“Usually we get about 70 to 80 people,” Ms Simpson said. “On the day, we talk about the Biggest Morning Tea, what the Cancer Council has done and how we can help people. “Last year we raised more than $700 for the Cancer Council. Homebaked goods prove a hit at St Andrew’s Uniting Church. “The effort was great … by all who helped and donated to the cause.” The church’s Biggest Morning Tea is on Sunday, November 24 between 10.30-11.30am, St Andrew’s Uniting Church, 10-20 Barkly Street.

Macedon Ranges business owners are being asked to outline how their business manages rubbish and recycling in a survey. Surf’s up at Tullamarine By Laura Michell

We’re looking to create an elite sports precinct

’’

- Linc Horton Urbnsurf founder Andrew Ross said the park has been seven years in the making. “Whether it’s learning how to stand up on a board for the first time, or pulling in to challenging barrels without having to travel for hours or be at the mercy of the elements, Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to become a new hub for the Victorian surf community and a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike,” he said. Melbourne Airport’s chief of property, Linc Horton said the park would be a great addition to the airport. “We’re working to create an elite sports precinct right here at Melbourne Airport known as Elite Park, which will service travellers, the community and wider Victoria. Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to play a big foundational role as part of the precinct,” he said.

New haven for skaters Skaters and BMX riders can look forward to a new pavilion at the Sunbury Skate Park. Construction has started on a viewing deck, social room, changerooms, a kitchen, first aid room, an office and additional storage space. The pavilion is expected to be completed in early 2020. Sports and Recreation Victoria contributed $100,000 to the project, to go with Hume council’s $873,000 commitment. Hume mayor Carly Moore said the pavilion would be a welcome addition to the skate park for both spectators and skaters. “Spectators will enjoy a whole new level of comfort with the addition of the viewing deck, social rooms and kitchen,” she said. “The new pavilion will provide a great new facility for local BMX participants. “The works also complement the recently completed upgrades to the Sunbury Skate Park. “BMX is one of many emerging sports growing in popularity and council is particularly pleased to deliver new facilities to help support and encourage participation.” Last month, the council officially reopened the Sunbury Skate Park after four months of upgrades which included a new quarter pipe, mogul, rails, bans and barriers, a wave block and a hubba.

Surfers are just two months away from being able to catch a wave in Tullamarine. Urbnsurf will open its $28 million surf park near Melbourne Airport in January. The park is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Members of Australia’s Olympic surfing team and junior surfing champions were among the first people to catch a wave at the new facility, testing out the surf last week. They were joined by representatives from Melbourne Airport, Surfing Victoria, Surfing Australia and Three Blue Ducks.

What is your connection to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges? I moved to Sunbury in 2009. I was married with two children. Since then my husband and I have had two more children and started a local business in Sunbury. My kids go to local schools, our friends are locals, and even my parents are locals. A Vibrant Life

12433021-SN48-19

How did you become involved with the Sunbury StreetLife festival – what is your role? StreetLife is something that came about through my passion for community. I have been one of the drivers of StreetLife since the start seven years ago. I’m actually one of the founders. I’m currently the president of the committee, and I try and make sure that everything gets done. In previous years, I’ve been one of only four on the team – from the promoting, to organising, to line marking the night before, and picking up the rubbish after the event. Thankfully this year we have a larger group of volunteers helping, so we can share the jobs.

(Luke Hemer) 199603_03

What are you passionate about? Other than my friends and family, I’m passionate about community. I’m involved in the school community, my business HomeGrown Gifts is a community of makers, and being a part of something like Sunbury StreetLife drives me as well. One of the things I love about Sunbury is the people – how they support one another, how you still can have a chat down the street. It still has a great community focus.

WOODEND 45 High Street, 3442 Keatings: 5427 2999

Price: $1.65 million

Grandly proportioned Highgrove, built c1920s, is regarded as one of the finest large period homes in Woodend for good reason: it’s quite simply stunning, and has wonderful gardens to match. Right from the stone pillars flanking an automated entry gate, this property announces itself as highly covetable, most especially for larger families and entertainers who will undoubtedly value the four living areas and up to six bedrooms. Although there’s an uncovered deck around which the house wraps, it’s the

High ceilings and strapped plasterwork all through are complemented by a white-on-white palette, and plantation shutters on all windows. There are no less than 10 fireplace, with all living rooms graced with their presence. The two-way fireplace in the lounge room is particularly eye-catching with its beautiful overmantel, while shuttered

The mod-country kitchen has white panelled cabinetry, and a timber-topped island bench with integrated microwave, along with all the other mod-cons. with fireplaces and freestanding tubs. Zoned central heating, a Jotul wood heater and a split-system provide all the seasonal comfort needed. On a huge block of about 2440 square metres, with dual access from a service road, this spectacular garden property is within a stroll of the retail and café precinct and the station. A smashing family property, it could also be an amazing guest house, STCA. Carole Levy

Within an easy stroll of the shops, medical centre and bus stop, this 1950s residence is very neat and tidy and would respond well to cosmetic updates. Elements such as stepped cornices on high ceilings, and hardwood floorboards hidden under carpet are a great start to any revamp. The classic brick veneer is on a block of about 1065 square metres, with a big, secure backyard. It has three large bedrooms with built-in robes while the shared bathroom is fresh and bright. An L-shaped lounge-dining room has a wood heater set within bricks rising to the ceiling, and there’s a sunroom with large windows admitting northerly light. The kitchen, with walk-in pantry, has ample storage and a wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. The property, ready to move in with nothing needed to be done immediately, also has a brick double garage and large garden shed.

With views towards Mt William and on about 2.02 hectares on the edge of town, this 1970s residence is surrounded by lovely gardens that include an orchard and a pretty dam. It has three fitted bedrooms that share a bathroom and separate toilet. A spacious lounge room has big windows framing garden views, while the tiled meals space abuts a typical ’70s kitchen (lime-green benches included) with ample storage. A full-width covered alfresco area is perfect for soaking up the rural ambience. Well-positioned paddocks have excellent fencing plus a horse shelter, there are two stables, and fertile soil produces good feed. Shady trees and swathes of lawn provide plenty of spots for sitting outdoors.

“A TIMELY REMINDER” We are all watching in horror the devastation of the fires in N.S.W and Queensland. Our hearts go out to those who have lost everything and the suffering of the native animals does not bear thinking of. Most of us remember very clearly Black Saturday and many of us also remember Ash Wednesday. We cannot, must not be complacent, we must not think that we are “safe” because the grass is green and it is still quite cold, conditions can change very quickly. I was happy to see the power company hard at work cutting tress away from the power lines, I would be even happier to see the sides of the roads cleared of fallen branches and long grass. There are actions that we can take to protect our homes to some extent. Clean gutters, remove all fallen branches and bark from the ground, have hoses attached to all taps, clear all flammable material from the boundary of the property and above all exercise common sense.

For guest accommodation or extra living space, there’s a detached bungalow with a kitchen, bathroom

OPEN 7 DAYS

It is of interest to note that the properties least affected by fire on Ash Wednesday were those with European trees. It is also of interest that Agapanthus (now a weed) are in fact fire retardants. To all firefighters who are fighting such a battle we wish you safety. To all the residents of the Macedon Ranges and the Sunbury area – prepare now, we have been given a timely reminder – we need to take note!! • Column supplied by Liz Dormontt. SPORT Frustrated Roar needs to bowl well for victory

Jason McGann was the standout with the bat. (Shawn Smits) 200647_02

Sunbury finally got a taste of red ball cricket in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. Having not played a two-day game so far this season due to rain, the Roar were more than ready to face Jacana on Saturday. It was a mixed day for the Roar, but they put a competitive total on the board. Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said it was good just to be out on the pitch. “It’s nice to finally be playing some red ball cricket,” he said. “It’s been a frustrating introduction into the VTCA, there’s been a lot of challenges and we’ve only played one-day cricket so far. “We’re more of a two-day side.” Sunbury won the toss and elected to bat. It lost a few early wickets, but still had some contributions to tick the scoreboard over. Jason McGann did what he has done on a number of occasions, coming in and making some late runs.

He made 71 as Sunbury was bowled out for 186. Ballinger said the innings from McGann was what they have come to expect of him. “Jacana bowled well and were able to draw a few false shots,” he said. “The knock was set up by the guys at the top. Jason knuckled down and showed patience and grit. “He’s been doing it year after year. He showed up and delivered.” Ballinger said with both sides very similar, the score was defendable. Jacana will resume at 0-25 after getting through 12 overs unscathed. “We tried a few things,” Ballinger said. “We would have liked to have a wicket or two. They are still 160 short, so hopefully we can get a few early wickets.” The Roar got their second win of the season earlier in the week, winning their opening T20 match against Sanctuary Lakes.

Mott eyes off AFL draft By Tara Murray Daniel Mott has achieved all the goals he set himself at the start of the football season, but the biggest one still awaits. After a standout top age year with the Calder Cannons, Mott is hoping he will be drafted by an AFL club next week. Mott said it had been a good year after ticking a lot of boxes he personally wanted to achieve. “I wanted to be in the leadership group at the Cannons and I was named vice-captain, which was the first goal,” he said. “I’m really proud to get that. “The next goal was to play consistently for the first four rounds and put my name up there for Vic Metro selection, and I did that. “I was lucky enough to play all four games for Metro and I was really happy with that. “To put yourself out there on the biggest stage in front of all the recruiters, shows that you can play. “After that, finishing off the season playing well, to get to combine, completed my goals.” Mott said it had been a really good year with the Cannons, with his consistency a key to his performance. He said for him, it was making sure he was well prepared for games and being ready to go. “I thought it was really consistent,” he said. “I focused on giving the same input every week and coming to play every week. “As a team we did really well and probably exceeded all our expectations. I really enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun, I’m sure all the boys from the Cannons would say the same thing.” Mott’s strong form with the Cannons was rewarded with the opportunity to play with Vic Metro at the national championships. He played all four matches for Metro and got to test himself against the best midfielders in the country. “I feel like it was a great experience and you’re not going to get better unless you play against players that are as good as you or better than you. “So it was a good opportunity for me to play against the best players in the country, line up on blokes in the midfield, like Caleb Serong. “You learn off them, I really enjoyed those couple of months.” Personally, Mott said his biggest strength was his work around the stoppages and the contested ball, as well as his ball use by both hand and foot. “You want the ball in my hands when you’re going forward.” Since the football season finished, Mott has been busy with year 12 studies. He said it

was new for his school, Brunswick Secondary College, to have someone juggling football and year 12. He also attended the AFL draft combine. He said as well as the chance to impress recruiters, the combine gave him opportunities to make new friends.

18 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 19 November, 2019

For the Richmond supporter, if his name was to be called out next week at the draft, it would be a dream come true. “Footy has always been the dream, ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to play footy,” he said. “Anywhere would be great, I’m not fussed if I have to move interstate.”

Sanctuary Lakes made 8-124 from its overs, with Jason McGowan taking two wickets. Sunbury made easy work of the total, finishing 0-128 off 10.1 overs. Dylan Landt finished 78 not out and Justin Nelson 43 not out. Ballinger said it was good to see them play some good cricket after the interrupted start to the season. He said the competition was still a little bit unknown, having moved across from the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. They will have a busy few weeks ahead of them with a number of catch-up games. “I think we have got about six games in two weeks, which is a big period.” Meanwhile, Sunbury’s women’s side lost to Keilor The Roar made 8-84, with Keilor making 7-94 in reply. Tara Murray

Runs galore but United falls short A 300-plus score wasn’t enough for Sunbury United as it suffered a big loss to Diggers Rest Bulla in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. United put in a good day with the bat chasing down a huge 451 against the Burras. United needed a couple of big scores to push them towards that total and their batsmen answered the call. Opener Dilan Chandima made 114 at the top of the order, but it wasn’t enough, with his side bowled out for 306 with five overs remaining. Woodend and St Anthony’s both avoided outright losses. Having conceded first innings points on day one, both sides knew they needed to have good days with the bat. Woodend started the day 17 runs behind Bacchus Marsh which declared at its overnight total of 3-99. After being bowled out for 82 in its first innings, Woodend had a much better day as they made 290. Warren Else top scored with 70. Gisborne resumed at 1-172 and didn’t hang around with the bat against St Anthonys. The Dragons batted until Tom Sanders got his century, declaring at 2-201. Sanders finished 102 not out. St Anthony’s, which was two players down, fought hard and was bowled out for 162. Romsey came away with an easy win against Riddell. Romsey resumed at 1-46 in reply to Riddell’s 148. The Redbacks chased down the runs easily and declared at 6-152. Riddell, in its second innings, finished 6-125 to avoid an outright defeat. Michael Day at the top of the order was the mainstay for the Bombers, finishing 77 not out. Gisborne remains undefeated on top of the ladde having made the most of being the only team to get a win in two of the rounds. Diggers Rest Bulla is pressuring them, while Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury United round out the top four. Tara Murray

New coach looks to bring new culture to Rupertswood

New Rupertswood netball coach Michael Saker and assistant coach Kaila Ingham. (Supplied)

Michael Saker will lead Rupertswood into a new era in the Riddell District Netball League. Saker was last week appointed Sharks head netball coach which includes coaching the A and B-grade sides. Saker replaces inaugural netball coach Di McCormack, after the club decided to head in a different direction after seven years. Saker said he didn’t plan on coaching next year, after three years at the helm at Bacchus Marsh but after speaking to Rupertswood, it was a good fit for him. “Things just sounded pretty good,” he said. “Speaking to [president] Brad [Pietromonaco] it’s a big family club and having kids that’s a good fit for me. “They understand where I was coming from with the level of commitment. “What they want with a coach is someone to improve the culture and improve the connection between football and netball. “It’s a similar role to what I took on at Bacchus Marsh.” Saker said he stepped away from coaching Bacchus Marsh, as he wasn’t sure if he could take them any further, having taken them from

bottom to two straight finals series. Previously he has played for Victoria and Australia, and has coached Australian indoor teams. Saker said he didn’t know a lot about Rupertswood and the playing group, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Sharks this year claimed three premierships, including their first A-grade flag. “Full credit to the former coach, they won a truckload of flags,” he said. “I don’t know the background, but I’m looking at a different approach. “It’s interesting timing and they had a good base and not coming from the bottom of the ladder, hardly winning games. “It’s a little bit exciting. Everything will depend on who stays and goes.” Saker will be assisted by his partner, Kaila Ingham, who will be a playing assistant coach. Ingham, who played in the Ballarat Netball League interleague team this year, will play in the A-grade side. Saker said they would have trials in early December. It’s then he’ll get a clear indication of who

Rupo’s thrilling finish

Sunbury is a good side. “We’ll continue to improve. “We haven’t had the greatest start and we’re two points outside the top four.” Rupertswood this week faces Macedon.

Tara Murray

Sunbury Lions sign quality midfielder

By Tara Murray Rupertswood and East Sunbury couldn’t be separated in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield. A last ball attempt at a run fell short for Rupo, to see the two teams share the points. East Sunbury made 191 on day one of the match, setting Rupertswood a more than competitive total. Rupo had their moments during the innings, but finished 8-191. Rupo playing captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said there were mixed feelings with the result. “It was a good comeback from us,” he said. “It was one of those games there was a lot of what ifs and buts and maybes, but it turned out the way it did. “It was a good atmosphere and plenty of support for both teams. “It was disappointing to not scratch our way over the line, but considering where we had come from the last couple of weeks, it was a good result.” Playing in their first two-dayer of the season, Pizaro said they had more of a game plan with how they went about their batting. He said getting a couple of batsmen back had also helped. Rupo lost a few early wickets before steadying and looked in control at 3-92. They then lost 3-5 to crumble to 6-92 with the Thunder taking control. Rupertswood fought back and took it down to the final ball, with scores level. Pizaro was the batsman on strike for the final ball. He was run out for 53 trying to hit the winning run. “It went straight to a fielder,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of boundaries, so you had to do a lot of running. With the field up, it was just trying to swing hard and try and get through the gap. “I had nothing to lose.” Pizaro was the top scorer, with Shane Van Rooy (45) and Max Howell (33) also making good contributions. Hammad Rashid took three wickets for East Sunbury. The match saw two players make their first XI debuts, Owen Thompson and Ryley Davis. Both players are still playing under-17s with Rupo continuing to give their younger players plenty of opportunities. Pizaro said it was an improved performance. “How we went with the batting it worked, but we didn’t quite get across the line,” he said. “They showed a bit of patience with the batting. A couple of little things didn’t go right. “We take a lot of positives out of it. East

is sticking around the club, with many players expected to follow McCormack to her new club. He said he would look at who they had before deciding whether to look at bringing players in. “I’ve got an open mind, I know no one and everyone is on the same level. “If they train hard they will earn a spot where they should play. “I’m not looking to recruit a full A-grade team, I want to see what I have got first. “There’s no pressure on me to keep winning premierships. We want to get the right people there and keep Rupertswood people there.” Sharks president Brad Pietromonaco said Saker had interviewed really well and brought into what they were trying to do. “He comes highly recommended,” he said. “It’s a new beginning and new culture. He’s a high calibre coach and he’ll hopefully be around for a few years.” Pietromonaco said indications were that they wouldn’t lose as many players as some people had predicted they would.

Macedon came out on top between the two teams in a one-dayer earlier in the season. Other winners on Saturday were the Sunbury Kangaroos, Sunbury United and Wallan.

The Sunbury Lions have strengthened their midfield, signing former VFL star Daniel Toman for next year’s Ballarat Football League season. Toman, who was aligned with the club while playing VFL, has put pen to paper to play with the Lions full-time next season. He joins the Lions having played with his junior club, Woodend-Hesket, in the Riddell District Football League the past three years. Toman said it was exciting to return to the Lions. “I’ve got some mates at Sunbury and they play at a pretty good standard,” he said. “I had always planned to come back to Sunbury and if I didn’t do it now, I would have never done it. “While I’m still in my prime, I wanted to step back up. I’m only 27 and I’ve got a few years of football left in me.” Toman said he enjoyed his time at Woodend but it was time to play at a higher level again. He said the Hawks were disappointed he was leaving, but understood why. He said he had spoken to a couple of clubs about making the move for next season, but Sunbury stood out. “It was the first training session last night and there was a good buzz,” he said. ‘‘I was even more impressed last night with how they were doing things. “There were 70 to 75 at training, I couldn’t believe it.” While Toman has been away from the Lions for a few years, he has still kept in touch with many of the players and kept an eye on how things were going. One of those players is this year’s Henderson medallist, Alik Magin. “I also work with him,” he said. “I can’t get away from him. “I work with a couple of others as well and they are also in my ear. They have been letting me know how Sunbury is going and how Woodend wasn’t going.” “I’m hungry to get some success, I haven’t played too many finals,” he said. The Lions have also signed Wade Derksen, who has moved from Darwin to Victoria. Tara Murray
