Lachy’s lasting legacy By Jessica Micallef In October 2017, Melanie Jorgensen and her family’s lives changed forever. Their beloved son Lachlan was known for his “big personality” and his love of all sports, especially athletics and football, but after suffering with depression and anxiety for more than a year, the 15 year-old took his own life. Looking back, Lachy’s mum Melanie said her son’s behaviour changed when he was 14. “He started to not feel himself,” she said. “Things had changed. “Sports can be quite competitive. There were a lot of nasty comments thrown around, so that was hard to deal with. “He decided that at the end of 2017 he didn’t want to play football anymore and I think that says a lot. He absolutely loved his sports. “He was the fun kid. He was big on social justice. He never really liked people being bullied or picked on. “He’s probably not someone who you expect ends up with anxiety and depression and takes his own life.” In the midst of their grief, Melanie and her family are determined to get the conversation started and raise awareness about the realness of suicide. In 2018, Melanie organised Laps for Lachy – an initiative to get people talking about suicide, while walking, cycling or running 400-metre laps – something that Lachy dearly loved. “This is a real thing, especially with our young people,” she said. “Lachy would easily talk about his injuries but not the other stuff. It’s really difficult for people to open up about it. “I wish he had reached out.” Melanie said about 150 people showed their support at Laps for Lachy last year and she was encouraged to continue the cause with a second event this year. She is also hoping to raise $10,000 for the wellness program Path of the Horse to provide young people with equine therapy sessions. “We want the whole community involved and we want everyone to look after themselves and each other,” she said. “As a community, if we can do something to help someone, that’s got to be a good thing. “I don’t want it to happen to anyone else’s Lachy. Be kind.” Laps for Lachy is on Sunday, December 1 at Tony Clarke Reserve between 9am-2pm. To donate: bit.ly/2r1J3wq If you or anyone you know needs help contact: Lifeline: 13 11 14 or lifeline.org.au

Veteran actress remembered By Robert Moran, Sydney Morning Herald Actress and activist Anne Phelan, best known for her breakthrough role as Myra Desmond in the 1980s soap Prisoner, has died aged 75. The long-time Romsey resident’s spell on Australian screens stretched over five decades, with regular roles on TV favourites including Bellbird, Blue Heelers, Neighbours and, more recently, as Gross family matriarch Nanna Dot in Seven’s Winners & Losers. In 2000, she won an AFI Award for Best
Actress in a Leading Role in a Television Drama for her turn in the ABC mini-series Something in the Air, alongside Eric Bana. She also appeared in films such as 1999’s The Craic and 2009’s Charlie & Boots, playing a female truckie in both, and most recently in this year’s box office-topping Ride Like a Girl. On stage, she acted in more than 50 plays. “She just loved working,” said Marea Jablonksi, director of talent agency BGM who represented Phelan for almost 50 years. “It was only recently that her health took a very sudden turn for the worst.
“She had an incredible ability to create very true characters – you just believed she was that person. There was no trickery to her work, it was just true and beautiful, and she created a whole lot of archetypical Aussie characters.” Renowned for her activist work, Phelan was Patron of Positive Women Victoria, an advocacy group supporting women living with HIV/AIDS, and a member of Actors for Refugees. In 2007, she received a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queens Birthday Honours List for her “service to the arts as an actress”.

The teddy bears’ picnic is on Saturday, 12431265-NG46-19
There’s a bear in there, and a rug as well. The Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House will host a teddy bears’ picnic next month for children to play games and tell stories. House president Kristine Rawlinson said she was looking forward to the fun-filled day. “Starting at 10am, the day will be filled with fun activities for the whole family,” she said.

The RACV is calling on commuters to take part in its On Track Survey. The biennial survey gives commuters the chance to rate their local stations and train journeys. According to the most recent survey, Sunbury station was rated a 6.67 out of 10. Footscray was ranked the best station on the Sunbury line, rating a 7.25 out of 10 and Albion station was listed as the worst station on the line, with commuters rating it a 5.21 out of 10. Difficulty finding a car park was cited as the most common problem at Sunbury station, while infrequent services were the main issue with the Sunbury line. RACV transport, planning and infrastructure senior manager Peter Kartsidimas said commuter responses to the survey would be used to campaign for better transport projects. “Train users can tell us what they really think,” he said. “What is the state of your local station? Does it need repairs? Do you feel safe? Is there enough parking? “We also want to know if your train is overcrowded, frequently late or regularly cancelled. “The results of this survey can help us directly influence future planning and improvements in rail facilities. “You don’t need to be a regular train traveller to take part in the survey. We’d encourage you to take the 2019 RACV On Track Survey and make train travel better for all Victorians.” RACV’s On Track Survey closes on Wednesday, November 20. Hume council is looking at dropping its library fines in favour of a ‘lost’ book charge. Libraries across Hume will trial the new system from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. During the trial, all items loaned will have a due date of three weeks from the date of issue. Customers can renew their item up to three times unless another customer is waiting for the item. If an item has not be returned or renewed after 21 days, the status of the item will be changed to “lost” and a replacement charge will be added to the customer’s account. Charges still apply for damaged goods. A report will be presented to the council in early 2021.

The Malmsbury Botanic Gardens will be transformed into a wonderland for the annual Malmsbury Village Fayre. The fayre, now in its 18th year, will take visitors down a rabbit hole into an Alice in Wonderland-themed day. Fayre committee member Maeve Ashby said she was looking forward to the event. “The best thing about it is that it’s at the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens which is one of the oldest gardens in Victoria,” she said. “There are these beautiful shady spots, so come with a picnic rug and settle down. “There will be over 80 stalls, entertainment [and] live music all day. Keeping in theme with Alice in Wonderland, we will have a Mad Hatter storytelling area, storytime with songs
and there’ll be these massive butterfly stilt walkers.” Fayre-goers are invited to let their imaginations run wild. “I think it’s really about having a sense of wonderment in the beautiful gardens and walking around and discovering the pockets of the fayre,” Ms Ashby said. “It’s almost like everyone attending is their own Alice.” About 4000 people attended last year. . The Malmsbury Village Fayre is on Sunday, November 17 at the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens, 5 Ellesmere Place between 10am-4pm. Cost $2 per person. Details: malmsburyvillagefayre.org.au/

Pressure on Sunbury residents By Jessica Micallef Sunbury has been revealed as one of the country’s top 10 hot spots for high blood pressure, according to a new report. A Stroke Foundation and SiSU Health Group report states that 36 per cent of Sunbury residents who have had a health check were found to have high blood pressure. The north-west suburb ranked second overall, with Schofields in New South Wales taking out the top spot. According to the report, Sunbury ranked “well above” the

national high blood pressure rate of 15 per cent. Gisborne was ranked in the top 10 Victorian suburbs for residents with high blood pressure.
According to the same report, 26 per cent of Gisborne residents who have head a health check were found to have recorded high blood pressure. Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan said high blood pressure was the largest modifiable risk factor to stroke, yet it often had no immediate symptoms. “Over time high blood pressure puts extra stress on blood vessel walls,” she said. “This can cause them to narrow or break down, eventually leading to a stroke. “High blood pressure is preventable and it
is manageable, but you need to know if it is an issue in the first place. The best way to do this is having it checked with your GP, at your local pharmacy or on a digital SiSU Health station. “I urge the people of Sunbury and surrounds to learn about their personal stroke risk and take steps to reduce it. “High blood pressure can be managed with medication and by living a healthy, active lifestyle. Research has found the number of stokes in Australia could be almost cut in half if high blood pressure alone was eliminated.”
We will remember them Thousands of people are expected to gather in the Macedon Ranges to commemorate Remembrance Day. A Remembrance service to celebrate the Armistice of World War I will be held on Monday, November 11 at the Woodend RSL sub-branch at 32 Anslow Street. In the lead-up to the day, Woodend RSL members will be selling poppies throughout the town as part of this year’s Poppy Appeal. Woodend RSL president Peter Whitelaw is calling on the community to support the appeal. “By purchasing a poppy, you are not only remembering those who have served in the past, but you are also helping to support those who are still serving today,” he said. “The proceeds from the sale of every poppy goes towards supporting service men, women and their families in times of need.” RSL Victoria president Robert Webster said
the money went a long way to supporting past and present veterans. “The funds raised by the sale of a single $10 Poppy Appeal pin may go towards the purchase of a mobility scooter for an elderly veteran, pay for a young veteran’s crisis accommodation and support health and wellbeing programs for veterans throughout Victoria,” he said. “You should feel proud when you wear the red poppy, as your donation will have helped to change a veteran’s life.” Poppy Appeal merchandise can be purchased at the Woodend RSL sub-branch, Woodend Coles and Woodend railway station. Donations to the appeal can be made online at poppyappeal.com.au Jessica Micallef Ken Bryce from Woodend RSL. (Luke Hemer) 199823_04

Mayor returns for a second term By Esther Lauaki Hume councillor Carly Moore declared “my work is not yet done” as she accepted the mayoralty for a second term. The Aitken ward councillor was voted in at last week’s statutory meeting and will be joined by councillors Karen Sherry and Jack Medcraft, who will share the role of deputy mayor – a first for Hume. Cr Moore, who is following in the footsteps of her sister – former councillor Casey Nunn – said the year ahead promised to be full of challenges and great opportunities. The lifelong Hume resident said she was
committed to working tirelessly to deliver an effective and high performing council. “It is with great pride that I am the mayor of Hume again and I thank my fellow councillors for their trust and support in electing me,” Cr Moore said. “It has been a busy year as mayor but there is so much more to do; in short, my work is not yet done.” Cr Moore said improving the appearance and amenity of the municipality was a priority. “The Hume Clean Taskforce – which I introduced earlier this year – will help ensure we have community and council-led solutions to cleaning up and beautifying our city,” she said.
“I also know that Hume residents need and deserve easy access to services and infrastructure that can only be achieved when all parts of the municipality receive their fair share of funding. “I will continue to work with our state and federal members of Parliament to ensure our residents are heard.” Cr Moore said that having two deputy mayors to represent all three wards would better engage with and represent residents. Jacksons Creek ward councillor Anne Potter announced that she would not contest the 2020 Local Government Election after 18 years in council, including a term as mayor in 2002-03.

This is the life Sunbury is ready to shine at this year’s StreetLife Festival. The annual festival, now in its seventh year, aims to highlight and acknowledge the town’s businesses. Festival president Sharyn Snook said the event celebrated everything local. “The focus of StreetLife for the last several years is still pretty much the same and that’s to promote the community ... and really getting people to shop locally,” she said. “No matter how much bigger Sunbury gets, we can still chat with people down the street and still know your local grocer and say ‘hi’. “And on top of that, to promote Sunbury as a great place to visit. We are trying to highlight the town itself for those who come on the day.” Ms Snook said the event has grown from small beginnings to a festival that up to 10,000
people are expected to attend. “It’s grown from a little promotional trade event to something that really focuses on the overall idea that has been the community,” she said. “It has grown to include the Village Green [and] Brook Street. “This year we do have some new activities and attractions. Sunbury Community Health has helped out with bringing in Aboriginal performers, which is fantastic. “We have a kids cooking group called Foost to teach kids that food can be fun and colourful and healthy.” The festival will be held on Sunday, November 17 between 10am-3pm on O’Shanassy and Brook streets, Sunbury. Free event. Jessica Micallef

Volunteer shows how it’s done By Jessica Micallef
Jean Hedington with her award. (Luke Hemer) 199557_01
Kyneton’s Jean Hedington has been recognised for her voluntary contribution to the community. Ms Hedington was awarded the Council of the Ageing Senior Achievers Award at the Victorian Senior of the Year awards in Melbourne last month. The 79 year-old said it was an honour to have received the award at a ceremony at Government House. “It’s exciting. I had known for about two months that I had won an award but they wouldn’t tell me what we won until they gave it to us,” she said.
‘‘
It would be a pretty boring life, I think, if I wasn’t doing even a few of these - Jean Hedington
’’
Ms Hedington is a life member of three organisations – the Kyneton Horticultural Society, Vision Australia and the Kyneton Agriculture Society. She has dedicated 47 years to the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival and served as the festival’s queen in 2002 alongside her husband Doug as festival king.
In 1982, she was the first Citizen of the Year for the former Kyneton shire. Ms Hedington has lived in Kyneton for 77 years. She said helping the community was the most rewarding aspect of volunteering. “You get to know a lot of people,” she said. “When I go down the street, a lot of people recognise me and talk to me. But I didn’t do it for that. It’s just good to help others. It would be a pretty boring life, I think, if I wasn’t doing even a few of these.” Ms Hedington said she hoped the younger generations would follow in her footsteps and spend some time volunteering. “A lot of the organisations are petering out because the young ones aren’t coming to keep them going.”
Grade 1 pupil Zahra has donated her hair to make wigs for people with cancer. (Damjan Janevski) 199552_02
Little girl with a big heart Little Zahra has cut off her hair for a good cause. The seven-year-old Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School pupil was inspired to cut off her long locks to show support for a friend’s mum who has cancer. “I felt quite bad for her,” Zahra said. “My hair was quite long and I thought I could donate my hair. At the start I was nervous, but then we did a little cut.” Zahra’s mum Alex said her daughter’s hair was donated to the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation to be turned into wigs for people with cancer. “We looked for a place that actually used the hair for wigs,” she said. “A lot of places sell it and then use the money for cancer research, but we wanted it to definitely go to a wig. “We raised money. The school did a crazy hair day. She raised just under $600.“ The money was donated to the OTIS Foundation which offers retreat accommodation at no cost for families and women going through breast cancer. Alex said she was “super proud” of her daughter for going a cut above. “When she first came up and told me she wanted to cut her hair, my initial reaction was ’no’,” she said. “[But] She said ‘it was something I really wanted to do’. “She’s got a really generous heart. She always thinks of other people before herself.” 12431477-CG46-19

Good for guts The gastrointestinal tract, or the gut, is necessary for food digestion – but now scientists believe that it also holds the keys for physical and mental wellbeing. The gut’s environment consists of trillions of bacteria, called the microbiome, that help to balance the stomach and bowels. As with any environment, diversity is important – the more variety of bacteria, the better. Cosmetic Acupuncture Esoteric Acupuncture and Quantum Consciousness

It has been used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome and even Parkinson’s disease.
Illness and medications could also cause bad bacteria to flourish, while antibiotics are known to beat down both bad and the good microorganisms. Signs that things are out of whack in the gut include bloating, excessive flatulence, burping, diarrhoea, nausea and weight gain or loss. If the microbiome remains unbalanced, more serious situations such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, colitis and a range of cancers can arise. Perhaps the most confronting way of nursing the gut back to health is faecal transplantation. A procedure pioneered by Sydney gastroenterologist Thomas Borody, it involves

Buyers looking for all the advantages of a country lifestyle without the drama of remote living should inspect this Romsey property. This 2.02 hectare (five acres in the old scale) block offers the best of country living with the convenience of a five-minute drive to “town” and an hour’s drive into the city. The property has been developed to run horses with several fenced paddocks, shelters, two stables and a dam but it wouldn’t take too much conversion to
create a hobby farm, reforest the land, or maybe just build up the extensive garden. The fertile soil, an orchard and mature plantings provide an excellent foundation. The three-bedroom house is cosy and while the styling is straight out of the ’70s – those lime-green kitchen bench tops are always giveaway – everything has been kept in immaculate condition and it wouldn’t take much to bring it up to modern expectations. All that land means extensions are also not out of the question
or even build again (STCA). There are three bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes and each has large windows offering plenty of light and charming views of the surrounding gardens. A wood combustion heater in the open-plan kitchen and dining area keeps things cosy and the many trees on the block would be an excellent source of fuel. A large lounge room overlooks the front verandah that takes the full length of the house and would itself provide plenty of
1
opportunities to take in the views. A matching pergola runs the full length of the house and effectively adds another room. Two outdoor seating areas means the surrounding vistas can be taken from shade or sun, depending on your choice, and the many trees on the property have been planted to provide maximum privacy. The long drive finishing in a large gravelled area sorts out any parking needs. Jan Fisher

glamorous! Men and woman in beautiful, colourful hats, dresses and suits. Gleaming horses working so hard with jockeys in their silks striving to win, and now it is over for another year. Hats are packed away, loses or wins counted and it is back to normality. Once the Spring Carnival is over and we move, rather rapidly, towards Christmas it has traditionally been a slowing down time in the real estate market but not so this year. The demand for homes remains extremely strong while the supply is low. High demand and low supply is a very happy situation for the Vendor (seller) not so good for buyers. As always I most strongly urge all Vendors who are contemplating “Open For Inspection” to call their insurance company and make sure that contents insurance is valid at the time of open for inspections

17 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 5 November, 2019
SPORT Sunbury gets result, points in washout round
Todd Trewarne’s rink had a big win on Saturday. (Shawn Smits) 200101_01
Sunbury made the most of its new state-of-the-art facility, as it came away with victory in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1, section 2. With rain falling across Melbourne, most matches across all divisions were called off but playing at home, Sunbury moved from its outside green to its new indoor facility, allowing its match with Whittlesea (2) to go ahead. Having lost their first match last week, Sunbury bounced back and returned to the winners’ list, 78 (14)-68 (4). Sunbury’s David Glennon said to come away with 14 points, with all but one other match not going ahead, was massive for them. Previously, if less than half the games were completed, all teams would get nine points for a draw, whether they played or not. Bowls Victoria changed that rule during the off season, with results standing no matter how many matches were completed.
“The rules have changed and we now get the benefit of getting the points,” Glennon said. “We picked up five points on nearly everyone else. We close the gap on the top side now.” Todd Trewarne’s rink was the big winner, winning 27-14. Lee Welsey, who was deputising with Mark Cowan unavailable, led his rink to an 18-13 win. Jay Bye-Norris lost 25-18, while Carla Krizanic had her first loss of the season, 16-15. Glennon said Sunbury had a bigger lead throughout the day and while Whittlesea came back late, he said Sunbury had never looked like losing. Lincoln Conduit, who was lead in Wesley’s rink, and Marc Bullows, who was the second in Trewarne’s rink, were the standouts. Sunbury remains in second position, 10 points behind MCC. Altona Sports was the other winner in that section, beating Richmond Union.
Cats reload for next year
Tara Murray
Sports shorts GDCA The Gisborne and District Cricket Association called off the weekend’s matches due to heavy rainfall. After playing through the tough conditions the past two weeks, which resulted in many draws, the association decided on Saturday morning that it would call off the round. Teams in the top grades will start their two-day matches this weekend.
By Tara Murray Macedon has been busy behind the scenes, adding some key players to its list for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. Needing to add extra depth to the squad, the Cats have already added eight new players. New coach Al Meldrum said the signings had added some positivity to the club in early preparation for next season. “There has been a fair bit of work,” he said. “The feedback has been good and it’s all been pretty positive.” When he was appointed, Meldrum said he was keen to get some past players back to the club. He’s been true to his word, with five former players signing on to return next season. Shaun Harrison, Jack Mills and Jack Kernan headline those who are returning. Meldrum said all three would be important for them. “I work with Harro,” Meldrum said. “I’ve been keeping tabs on him since he went back to Deer Park after a year off in 2018. “He lives in Gisborne and is looking forward to getting back to the club. “Jack Mills is another premiership player and was part of the leadership group. He’s really motivated and I haven’t seen him this motivated since the flag. “Jack Kernan is back as well. This year he played in the VAFA and gives us a key position option.” The only confirmed out for the Cats is ruckman Tom Waters, who has been appointed playing-coach at Lancefield, while a couple of others are travelling. To fill that void, the Cats have recruited former VFL and SANFL player Rowan Andrews. Andrews played with Meldrum at his former club Avoca. “Tommy was the premier ruckman in the competition,” he said. “We’ve been spoilt having such good service from him. “Rohan brings heaps of experience at different levels. We’ve been fortunate to get him. “He’s a different type of ruckman. He’s a massive ‘in’ for us to fill the void of losing Tommy.” Andrews is one of three players to join the Cats from Avoca. Dan Trajanovski and Mitch Thar will add to the Cats midfield. Meldrum said the transition would be made smoother, with all three playing in the midfield group together. “Dan and Mitch are midfielders who can play both inside and out.
Sunbury’s top side this week faces Glenroy. It then has a bye, with the Vic Open being held at Shepparton. Sunbury will have several bowlers competing including Dylan Filuk, Todd Trewarne, Damien Hodor and Geoffrey Stewart in the men’s singles and Lisa Trewarne in the women’s singles. Filuk, Todd and Shane Trewarne, Hodor and Alf Muscat are all competing in the men’s pairs, while Sophie Kurzman and Lisa Trewarne are teaming up in the women’s pairs. Several bowlers are also competing in the triples events. While Sunbury was lucky to get on the green on Saturday, there was no action in the Central Highlands Bowls Division, with all matches washed out.
CBL Men Kyneton Tigers split their matches in the Country Basketball League men’s north-west competition on the weekend. On Saturday night, they lost to Mildura Heat. The Tigers were in the match early with only two points in it at quarter time. The Heat got going in the second quarter and were able to keep the pressure on, to win 78-56. On Sunday, the Tigers faced the Swan Hill Flyers. The Tigers took the lead early and led for most of the first three quarters. They slipped behind early in the last, but responded, winning 78-61.
CBL Women The Kyneton Tigers lost a thriller in the Country Basketball league women’s north-west competition. Travelling to take on the Swan Hill Lady Flyers, the Tigers trailed for much of the game. The margin got out to as much as 14 points in the third quarter, before the Tigers hit back and levelled the scores in the final minute of the game. Swan Hill hit the final basket to win 69-67.
Basketball
Shaun Harrison is returning to Macedon this year.
“They are both good ball users by foot.” Meldrum said they wanted to continue to keep the positive vibe up throughout the pre-season and take that momentum into next year. Having made finals last season, Meldrum said the focus was to be in the mix again next season.

“We want to make finals and win more games than we lose. “We want to be competitive.” The Cats are also looking to get an under-19.5 football team back on the park next year, after not having one this year. Richard Blake has been appointed the under-19.5 coach.
Sunbury’s Dylan Cheyne has been selected as part of the Victorian National Performance Program. The VNPP is an opportunity for Victoria’s elite junior under-16 and under-18 basketballers to take up scholarships and develop their skills within the program. Players were selected for the program on their performances at recent Australian Junior Championships or have been identified by high performance coaches as having the potential to represent Australia in the future.
