Game on in Gisborne By Jessica Micallef A former newsagency will be transformed into an amusement parlour in Gisborne. Councillors last week gave the green light for the town’s first amusement parlour to go ahead at 22 Brantome Street. It will comprise 34 video gaming machines and will be open seven days a week. Macedon Ranges resident Vicky Mezzapesa proposed the parlour as a “safe, secure, fun, all-ages entertaining environment”. At last week’s council meeting, Ms Mezzapesa said she was looking forward to providing the Macedon Ranges with its first amusement parlour.

“This will have a positive impact on our community. “It’s well positioned within a commercial precinct with direct access, adjoining amenities and parking complimenting our shopping district, promoting economic growth and creating employment opportunities. “My vision is to establish a friendly and social environment – a reputable business.” The amusement centre will be open between 10am-10pm seven days a week. No food and drink will be served, three staff members will be on site at all times and there will be CCTV security. The planning permit application received

eight objections which included financial impact on families, noise, anti-social behaviour, how the proposal met the character of the town and the impact on shoppers. During the meeting, Cr Jennifer Anderson raised concerns of a possible gambling aspect while playing the games. “What I do hope is that this is an occasional use and not something that becomes a craving or addiction or something that people have to turn up to,” she said. “I hope it compliments other activities that we have on in our shire. “I do understand that different people have different ideas for entertainment, different places, and different stimulants. It is important

to provide a variety of activities for a variety of people. “I am pleased there will be CCTV there so that means people that attend will be in a safe environment. I do hope that this application remains a safe, secure, fun and entertaining place. “It was important for us to have a bit of discussion about this so that the community is quite clear that this is not gambling.” Ms Mezzapesa said the games would not be set up as gambling equipment to pay out money. She said gamers would be rewarded with a token after play which could be exchanged for a prize. “That is the way we are giving back.”

Theft offences on the rise By Jessica Micallef Theft offences across the Macedon Ranges have hit a 10 year high, new figures reveal. The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals thefts increased from 519 offences to 584 in the 12 months to the end of June – an increase of more than 12 per cent. According to the agency, property and deception offences – including arson, property damage, burglary, theft and deception – have risen 20 per cent (from 894 reported offences to 1074) in the year to June, 2019.

Macedon Ranges Police Inspector Chris Large told Star Weekly earlier in the year the spike in deception offences (95 compared to 35) was in relation to “good work being done by police”. Drug offences, which include drug dealing and trafficking, cultivate or manufacture drugs, drug use and possession and other drug offences rose by more than 45 per cent (from 44 to 64) in the same period. “Over the last couple of months, we have had a strong focus on knowing where the high levels of drug action were,” Inspector Large said.

Offences including arson, blackmail and extortion, robbery and homicide and related offences remained steady in the year to June, 2019. In Hume, drug offences have also hit a 10-year high, with 754 reported offences recorded in the year to June, 2019, compared to 545 the previous year – a rise of nearly 40 per cent. Property and deception offences including arson, property damage, burglary and breaking and entering, theft, deception and bribery were down by nearly five per cent (from 9708 to

9226) in the same time. Crimes against the person, including homicide, assault sexual offences, robbery, stalking and dangerous and negligent acts rose by more than 12 per cent (2725 reported offences from 2434) in the year to June, 2019, compared to the previous year. Crime Statistics Agency head statistician Fiona Dowsley said the agency had seen a record number of alleged offenders processed by Victoria Police. “The average age of these alleged offenders has been increasing,” she said.

It’s the only one of its kind in the country.” Ritchie said the award-winning painting had a “sunset feel to it”. “There’s lots of water movement. It was depicting it [the swan] just as it turned to the light so it’s a black bird with a lot of colour on it, so oranges, browns, light reds and in the shadows you get all the blues. You get quite a nice contrast with a sky blue reflection on the water.”

Ritchie said he often drew inspiration from his surroundings. “I spend a lot of time walking around in the bush, down the creek. Everything I’ve done with my artwork has come from something I have seen, something that has appealed to me in some way, shape or form. “I take a lot of photos of standard things like a log or a tree that has nice lighting. Ripples on water are great as well.”

Gisborne artist William Ritchie draws inspiration from the world around him. He often combines multiple ideas or multiple images to make one painting that stands out. Now, a black swan he saw swimming in Port Fairy two years ago has won Ritchie an award for excellence at this year’s The Holmes Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art competition held in Queensland last month. Parts of the Macedon Ranges are set to transition to the NBN. Residents and businesses in Macedon, Mount Macedon, New Gisborne and Riddells Creek will have their existing landline phone and internet services switched over to the NBN from October 11. Existing services will no longer work. More than 2700 homes and businesses in the area have placed an order for NBN services in the past 18 months. Those that haven’t arranged an NBN connection are at risk of disconnection. Victoria and Tasmania local head of NBN Matt Evans urged residents to make contact with their phone and internet provider to switch over to the new service before the transition date. “While many homes and businesses have already made the switch to a service over the NBN access network, this is the final stage of the transition to the NBN access network and brings the community closer to fully embracing the benefits of fast broadband,” he said. “We encourage any local businesses that are yet to switch to contact their preferred phone and internet service provider well in advance of the switch-off date to ensure there is plenty of time to manage the migration of any business service or devices. “It’s particularly important for anyone with a medical alarm, auto-dialler or emergency call button to register these devices on NBN Co’s Medical Alarm.”

Push for Romsey shed Men in Romsey could soon have a permanent place to gather. As part of Men’s Shed Week last week, McEwen MP Rob Mitchell visited the Romsey Men’s Shed members to discuss plans for a new shed. Mr Mitchell urged all government levels to support the development of the first Men’s Shed in Romsey. “We want to see it up and running because we know it makes a huge difference to men’s lives,” he said. “The message is pretty clear for the council, myself and the state government – work together and let’s try and get this going.” Romsey Men’s Shed members have been on the hunt for a permanent base for more than

a year and have been using the Romsey Scout Hall as their meeting place since June. The men have plans to build a shed next door to the hall. Shed secretary Patrick Holt said a permanent site would hopefully attract more men to get involved. “We’re working closely with the Scouts for the meeting side and then we’ll be looking at initially building a storage workshop shed next door,” he said. “We need to get it done. As we grow and have actual physical facilities to show and share then we’ve got more interest. Woodend’s speed limit warning By Jessica Micallef Woodend residents are calling for reduced speed limits on the Avenue of Honour. The death of a driver on the road last month has prompted residents to question the appropriateness of the current speed limit. The speed limit begins at 100km/h and decreases to 80km/h, then to 60km/h. Woodend resident Ross Ogilvie said he had been concerned about the speed limit along the Avenue of Honour for some time. He said he would like the speed reduced to 70km/h along the entire stretch of road.

“I am a regular user on the road [and] I think it’s about time,” he said. “Most of the road is fairly straight but there are one or two slight angulations. There is a bend in the road which is unfortunately where that accident did take place. There is virtually no artificial lighting on the entire road.” Avenue of Honour resident Russell Griffin said he often feared for his family’s safety when driving or crossing the road. “My 15-year-old son was crossing the road because the car was a long way away from him and he said he actually had to move quickly to get off the road because the car was just going

fast,” he said. “School buses actually stop on the Avenue of Honour in the 100 zone.” Mr Griffin said entering and exiting his driveway in a 100km/h zone was a challenge. “When coming out of my driveway and turning, I am having to brake suddenly because someone has started an overtaking move and is taking up the side of the road that I was going to drive on,” he said. Mr Griffin agrees the speed should be reduced. “I’ve had local people tell me it should be a 60 zone all the way through,” he said.

“You’ve got trees next to the road, there are kangaroos. There’s no plausible reason why that should be a 100km/h road … on the one to two kilometre section before the freeway.” One person has died on the Avenue of Honour in the past five years, according to Regional Roads Victoria. Regional Roads northern regional director Brian Westley said speed limit changes are considered on a case-by-case basis. “Following community feedback, we have been reviewing all speed limits approaching Woodend, including the speed limit on the Avenue of Honour,” he said.

Birds watchers unite Swoop on over to Macedon Ranges’ very first bird blitz. Bird enthusiasts will get the chance to visit more than 100 sites in the Macedon Ranges to learn about the birds native to the region. The council’s planning and environment director Angela Hughes said the event would monitor and identify the different birds in the area as part of council’s biodiversity strategy. “It’s to understand the ecosystem and how healthy it is,” she said. “There are more than 227 bird species in the shire and of those, 18 per cent are at threat of extinction. “We’re hoping to see the powerful owl, the greater glider and woodland birds. If they are seen within the environment, it’s a good sign that we have a healthy ecosystem.” Bird watchers are asked to meet at Bald Hill Reserve, Kyneton for a hot breakfast and a talk

from local bird experts. “Following that, people will break into small groups with at least one bird expert assigned to each group,” Ms Hughes said. “We’ll be providing … a light lunch. Primary school gets makeover

By Jessica Micallef A Gisborne mother and son are continuing their cancer-fighting efforts. Sarah Dale has been participating in the Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay for Life for four years. Her son Tyson, 13, has been right by her side, running in the relay for three years. Ms Dale said their relay efforts followed the death of her father Richard, from asbestos cancer on Christmas Eve in 2014. “Last year we raised $5000 which meant we got a research grant in our team name,” she said.

“We chose one that was relating to fast growing or quick cancers. My dad, Tyson’s grandpa, died from asbestos cancer which affects the lungs so we obviously know first-hand how quick it actually hits. “They gave him 13 months and he got five [months]. It’s horrible that my dad basically lost his life for going to work, it’s just not fair.” Ms Dale and Tyson have already begun raising money for next year’s Lancefield and Macedon Ranges Relay for Life. Earlier this year, they hosted an outdoor movie night and raised about $2000. Now the mother and son are organising a ’90s bingo night, to help get closer to their $5000 goal to receive another research grant. “It’s about doing something and feeling like you’re giving back,” Ms Dale said. “There’s nothing worse than being sick and having to be a financial burden. There are so

many people out there dying from cancer these days. It’s basically about getting out there and trying to raise the funds and helping people out there in the community.” Ms Dale said her son was a “big inspiration” for other young people wanting to take part in the annual relay.

Tylden Primary School pupils will soon be learning in new and improved classrooms. The school has been provided with $255,000 to upgrade two portable buildings, as part of the state government’s school maintenance funding blitz to every government primary and secondary school in Victoria. Renovations to one of the school’s portable buildings will include the removal of asbestos, replacing exterior cladding, guttering, fascia and roof, replacing carpet, installing a new acoustic ceiling and accordion door, installing new air-conditioners, repainting the walls and installing new whiteboards. The government also provided $75,000 to refurbish a second portable building at the school which will include replacing carpet, installing new air-conditioners and painting and repairing the walls and ceilings. Works are expected to start in term four and will take about eight weeks to complete. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the money would provide pupils and staff with modernised facilities. “This upgrade is about more than giving Tylden Primary students the school facilities they deserve,” she said. “It is about helping build community pride in a great school. Across Victoria, we are building and upgrading schools so our students have the best facilities [and] our classrooms have the best teachers.”

Giving birth to a healthy idea By Jessica Micallef Sunbury College students are doing their bit for women and their newborns. The year 12 health and human development students have been preparing and assembling birthing kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to eliminating maternal and newborn diseases and death. The foundation will send the kits assembled by the students to women in developing countries. Health teacher Bo Kelly said the students

wanted to work on a project that was hands-on. “We wanted to make it part of our curriculum, something more practical and something that they could relate to in the real world,” he said. “We did some research and the students came up with something we could do that was hands-on and raised money. And not just raising money for an organisation and not seeing where it goes.” The students raised more than $1000 through a GoFundMe page. The money was used to purchase equipment for the kits.

“We got in contact with the foundation to purchase all the equipment that goes into the birthing kits,” Mr Kelly said. “In the birthing kits there is a big plastic sheet, soap, a surgical scalpel, string, some gauze and some latex gloves. All real basic stuff so a mother can give birth safely.” The students have assembled 200 birthing kits. “We are putting in the groundwork this year. Hopefully we will set it up across different health cohorts in the years to come,” he said. Details: bkfa.org.au/

Gardens of grandeur You’re invited to go “behind the hedges” at one of Macedon Ranges finest gardens. The Garden Lovers’ Fair is back for another year at the historic Bolobek estate. Up to 2500 are expected to attend the Mount Macedon and District Horticulture Society’s two-day event this weekend. Society member Jamie Bryon said this year’s fair will be one of the biggest since its establishment in 2003. “It will feature more than 45 stallholders and there will be a mix of both new and the much-loved returning stallholders who have attended for many years,” he said. “One of the biggest drawcards, I think, is the fact that the fair is held within the grounds of Bolobek which is one of Victoria’s most significant gardens. It’s also a rare opportunity to see behind the hedges of this beautiful garden that isn’t always open to the public.” Gardening experts including Stephen

Ryan and Karen Sutherland will share their knowledge across the weekend. There will also be garden tours and an animal farm for children. “We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of young families that are making a day out and attending the fair,” Mr Bryon said. MY PLACE Sharni Page recently performed in the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The Newham resident speaks to Jessica Micallef about life as a performer and her show A Day In The Life Of You. What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I moved with my husband and three children to a 20 acre property in the Macedon Ranges two years ago. We wanted a more balanced and grounded lifestyle where kids could really be kids, I could nurture my creativity and inner Maggie Beer that could not be satisfied on a 300 square metre block, and my hubby could learn new skills on the land. We have never regretted it.

Tell me about how you got involved in the Melbourne Fringe Festival? I am in a professional theatre group called Musical Sprouts. We are three mums who have performed professionally for 20 years. We came together to create quality music and theatre for kids about the challenges they face in their young lives that is entertaining and engaging for both kids and adults. It is a natural progression to perform at the Fringe Festival after doing smaller tours around Melbourne. Tell me about the show you performed in during the festival – what was your role? I am one of the creatives and one of the three characters in our show A Day In The Life of You. I play Reddy. Yella is little with big energy. Blueno is equal parts grumpy and silly. Reddy has a secret past. Reddy and Blueno help Yella

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about raising happy kids, singing at the top of my lungs, good food, my chickens, and creativity in all its forms because I believe that embracing a creative practice is the foundation for holistic wellbeing.

What’s that? You’re renovating? I object! It was Groucho Marx who said: “I don’t know what they have to say, it makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is – I’m against it!” And that’s so often the attitude of Australians generally to their neighbours’ applications to do any work at all on their own homes, whether renovations and extensions or rebuilds, insists veteran architect Daniel Meszaros. “As soon as that building notice goes up on a front fence, then all bets are off,” he says, after 45 years of having to deal with building objections – most of which, he claims, run the gamut from stupid to absolutely crazy. “It doesn’t matter that the proposed extensions or work might fully comply with all the regulations; emotions override common sense and neighbourly friendship. “Of course, there are projects that deserve objections but for every one of those, there are 50 baseless ones, ranging from the petty and plain silly to the downright vicious.” Meszaros has now collected some of the weirdest and wackiest objections to applications he’s encountered. “I think people are objecting even more and some of their objections are getting stranger and stranger,” Meszaros says. “People are frustrated, they believe there’s more and more development, and they’re feeling disempowered by the processes.” Among the objections he’s had to deal with have been: • An objection to a neighbour’s TV aerial being slightly over someone’s boundary which meant birds were scared to fly over;

SPORT Sunbury Kangaroos welcome Ashfield to the fold Ashfield Cricket Club and the Sunbury Kangaroos Football Netball Club are joining forces. The two clubs, which are both based at Boardman Reserve in Sunbury, will come under the newly formed Sunbury Kangaroos Sporting Group banner. The cricket club voted on Sunday to join the group and change its name to the Sunbury Kangaroos Cricket Club. Newly elected cricket president Shane Woolley said he had been keen on the idea for a number of years. Woolley had been a long-term president of the cricket club, before stepping away the past couple of years. “The club overwhelmingly agreed to change the name to the Sunbury Kangaroos Cricket Club,” he said. “We’re only operating in what is in the best interest of the club and they wanted the name change. “It’s a massive step. Myself and [football

president] Al [Walters] have been talking about it for nine or 10 years, to get some movement now is a positive, we’re all on the same page.” Woolley said the move made sense in a number of ways. He said many people didn’t know where Ashfield was located and they had gone by a number of different names during their history. Many of the sponsors are the same, while several people are involved in both clubs. “We play at the same ground and many people have never heard of us,” he said. “Ultimately we could have the same merchandise and you can wear the same jumper all year round. “It could be possible down the track you have one membership for both football and cricket. “This the first baby step in becoming a really strong sporting club.” Woolley said they would wear their existing Ashfield uniforms this season, with the name change coming so close to the start of the season.

Football president Allan Walters said it was a massive step forward for the clubs. They have already registered the Sunbury Kangaroos Sporting Club and they had designed a new logo including all the sports within the club. “I think it gives everyone more clout moving forward,” Walters said. “We have a lot of the same sponsors and we can move forward with one uniform.” The sporting club also includes the darts sides based out of Boardman Reserve. Walters said long term they would like to see the Sunbury Kangaroos Junior Football Netball Club become part of the sporting group. The cricket club starts its season this weekend. Its top side, in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield, faces crosstown rival, Rupertswood. Rupo turns to next generation

By Tara Murray Consistency is the key for Woodend as it tries to return to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup finals. Having finished fifth – a game outside the top four – Woodend was left to rue some poor performances last season. Woodend playing coach Greg Matthews said they dropped a lot of games they should have won last season. “There was inconsistency across the board, from within games to week to week,” he said. “We struggled to consistently put runs on the board and bowl teams out. “We showed we can match it with the top couple of teams, but when we played at our worst, we were right off the pace.” Woodend is backing in the same playing group to get the job done this year. Englishman Monte McCague, who has returned home, and Nick Smith, who has joined Sunbury, are the two major outs. Matthews said they were confident that they could take the step back into finals. Most of the group was part of the side that made the grand final in 2017-18. “There’s not too many new faces,” he said. “Most people are going around again. “We’re looking to be more consistent as individuals. This season we want to improve in that area. “All the guys have another season under their belts, particularly the younger players. They understand the game a bit better.” Matthews said there had been some good numbers at training throughout the pre-season. He said they would continue to try and bring some younger players through the top side. He said they were expecting a few more younger players to return in the next couple of weeks. “We blooded a couple who are quite young in the firsts and seconds last season and they contributed a lot. “They played in the seconds premiership and contributed in finals and the grand final. “They showed they can play at this level.” As well as the youngsters stepping up, Matthews said the group in their early 20s were coming into their peak and should be able to take their games to the next level. Matthews said the focus for the side early on was to ensure they got off to a good start in the one-dayers.

In other first-round matches, Gisborne hosts Bacchus Marsh in a rematch of last season’s grand final, Romsey plays Diggers Rest Bulla and Sunbury United faces newly promoted St Anthonys.

The next generation will be key to Rupertswood’s hopes in this year’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Johnstone Shield. Having made finals in their first season back in the second grade, Rupo is aiming to set the side up for the future. Rupo coach Andrew Pizaro said they had a lot of kids coming through. “We have a lot of under-17s keen to play and we’re really looking to push as many through as we can,“ he said. “We have got two under-17s teams this year and we have got on the front foot to introduce them into the senior program. “This group will be around for the next 12-15 years.” Pizaro said they would have a mixture of youth and experience in both their top sides. He said the under-17s were training with the senior teams to help them further develop. “They want to play as high as they can, that is encouraging.” There will be few changes to Rupo’s top side. Michael Treweek has returned to Sunbury to play with his brothers and John Lane will step down to the seconds and captain the side. Bert Van Den Heuvel will assist Lane. Young bowler Joel Muir has come across from the Sunbury Kangaroos [formerly Ashfield] and adds to the core young group. Pizaro said there was some exciting times ahead. “Joel has a couple of mates at the club,” he said. “I taught him at primary school and I’ve played against him. “Alex Bond shone last year and is in that age group. He started the season batting at eight, nine and 10 … We gave him a chance and he took the next step. “Max Howell played pretty much the whole season in the ones.
