Marble madness will descend upon the Woodend library these school holidays. The library will host Marble Mania – an event where children can learn how to make their own marbles from basic household items. Library manager Lulu Cockram said Marble Mania was designed to encourage the use of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) concepts. She said general items can be turned into marbles and marble ramps. “Paper plates, really general household items and all craft things,” she said. “Also, cut up milk containers, things out of the recycling bin. They’ll be able to guide the marbles through different colored hoops.” Ms Cockram said the event was also a great day for children to explore the library during the school holidays. “In a town like Woodend, a lot of families would come to the library for hours, we have a heap of play spaces,” she said. Marble Mania will be on Tuesday, October 1 between 10.30-11.30am at Woodend library, corner of High and Forest streets. The free event is suitable for children aged 5-9 years. Airfield ready for takeoff By Jessica Micallef Flights at the Kyneton Airfield are set to almost double from 5110 to 10,000 a year under plans outlined in a draft Kyneton Airfield Masterplan. Up to 12 privately-owned hangars, three aviation business hangars, an office building and a tourism hub could also be built on part of the airfield currently zoned for farming. The plans have come under fire from the Macedon Ranges Residents Association.

Association secretary Christine Pruneau urged the council to sort out exising issues at the airfield before considering any new development. “There are complaints from people about low-flying aircrafts … the noise, the safety aspects. “There are all these types of things and nobody has sat down and had a real look at what we can build here. “There’s more to everything than just an economic aspect.

Most of the airfield is zoned for public use, however a lot at 8 Rawson Place is zoned farming. The draft plan proposes the lot be amended to public use to accommodate new hangers, offices and a tourism hub. Shelter warms hearts, homeless By Jessica Micallef The Sunbury Winter Night Shelter has warmed the hearts of the community. The three-month initiative provided sleeping places in local churches for homeless people during the cold months of June, July and August. Project co-ordinator Chris Morgan-Prosser said the service was a success. “It brought an awareness of homelessness in our very own community which was most important,” she said.

“Our community supported the winter night shelter. The volunteers were just amazing, they did the evening shift, the overnight shifts, breakfast for the guests, they cooked meals, they washed their bed linen. They just did an amazing amount of everything.” The shelter provided a place to sleep for 19 guests across five different Sunbury churches. More than 380 beds and dinners were made and about 160 volunteers dedicated their time to the project. “Although there were only five churches that actually looked after the guests, some of

the volunteers on the nights came from other churches,” Ms Morgan-Prosser said. “It was absolutely a church and community joint effort. There was no one left out. “The guests took a chance because they would have normally been outside. We didn’t know them and they didn’t know us, so I think

we should be grateful that the guests came. I don’t think that the community let them down.” Ms Morgan-Prosser said the initiative was locked in for next year’s winter. However, she said she would like to extend the service to more than just a night-time shelter. “The most difficult thing was saying to them in the morning ‘have a good day, there’s a drop-in centre that runs for a few hours,’” she said. “It would be really good if we could have some sort of day-time support centre. That is my pie in the sky dream.”

Country Cob Bakery was awarded 12 gold and 12 silver medals for its pies and sausage rolls at The Great Aussie Pie Competition in Sydney earlier this month. Bakery co-owner and head pastry chef Chan Khun said he and his brother Ryan were thrilled their bakery received so many awards. “It feels amazing,” Chan said. “We’re always keen to improve our quality of the product. At the competition we saw lots of good product and the competition is getting

tougher and tougher for us.” The bakery’s lamb ragu pie also took out third place for Australia’s best red meat pie, its satay seafood pie was awarded third in the seafood category and the plain pie placed third in Australia’s greatest apprentice plain pie. “We’ve been participating in this competition for eight or nine years now,” Mr Chan said. “The last three years have been amazing for us because we keep winning gold. This time we entered six or seven new flavours and most of them got the gold medals.” The brothers are no strangers to success.

Their caramelised pork and pepper pie took out the top spot in this year’s Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition, hosted by the Baking Association of Australia. Chan said teamwork and dedication was the secret to the best-tasting pie. “We have strict guidelines in the kitchen that everyone has to follow,” he said. “You have to put love into your work, but the secret is to put quality ingredients and help each other. The pies have to be crusty and fulfilling at the bite.”

Commuters are on board with the new Kyneton bus network. Bus usage on the Kyneton service increased by an average 45 per cent since the new network was implemented on April 1, according to recent usage data. The new network expanded Kyneton’s bus service from three to six days a week and hours of operation were extended during weekdays. An extra 100 services were added as well as the launch of a new bus service between Kyneton and Trentham. An additional 60 bus services and a simplified timetable was introduced in July to connect Lancefield and Romsey residents with trains at Sunbury and Clarkefield train stations during busy peak periods. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas was delighted the networks were a success with commuters. “The new Kyneton bus network is connecting locals to the station, town centre, schools, showgrounds and health services,” she said. “We’re making the local bus network more convenient for locals by expanding operating hours and improving connections to trains, local shops and schools.” Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne said the extra services helped to better connect Macedon Ranges commuters. “Kyneton locals have got behind their new and improved bus network with this significant increase in bus patronage,” she said. “We’re making sure that locals can get where they need to go.” Jessica Micallef

‘Unsafe’ bus stop riles resident By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury resident is calling on Hume council to make a bus stop more accessible for commuters. Resident Brad Radclyffe, who is visually impaired, said he had no access to the Curtis Avenue bus stop near Harvard Court Reserve. “We have to walk through trees and shrubs and on the main road to access it,” he said. “I have a guide stick. If you have a walking frame, it’s nearly impossible to access the bus stop without walking on the main road itself.” Mr Radclyffe said he had contacted Hume

council many times and was disappointed in what he says is a lack of effort to upgrade the bus stop. “Four months ago, Hume council said they haven’t set anything in the budget,” he said. “They haven’t done anything in the slightest bit to make it safer.” Mr Radclyffe catches the bus from the Curtis Avenue stop at least twice a week. He said he would like a two metre footpath installed to access the stop. “There is no footpath,” he said. “I’ve fallen over many times and I’ve seen people fall over accessing the bus stop. It only needs a two metre

footpath to be put in and they [the council] are not interested. “It’s not a budget issue, it’s an OHS issue.” Hume council’s sustainable infrastructure and services director Peter Waite said the bus stop was installed by Public Transport Victoria. “When Curtis Avenue was developed, it was intended to have a semi-rural feel with grassed road verge and open swale drains instead of kerb and channel,” he said. “There is a footpath on the opposite side of Curtis Avenue to where the bus stop is. Pedestrians wanting to access the bus stop are encouraged to use the footpath rather than walk along the nature strip.”

SPORT New women’s team puts some Roar into Sunbury Sunbury has achieved its aim of fielding a women’s cricket side for the upcoming Victorian Turf Cricket Association season. The Roar tried to field a team last season but fell short, so put out the call again a couple of months ago. Roar president Brendan Doyle said they had been able to enter a side in the T20 competition. He said they had secured sponsors and the local community was behind the team. “We have 10 signed players, including three who have never played before, but always wanted to,” he said. “They have a passion for cricket and would sit and talk about the Test series and know more about it than half the men at the club. “The other seven players have played cricket, but they’ve had to travel outside Sunbury to do that.” Doyle said having 10 players was a good

start, but they were still looking for a few more to add to the squad. He said players from premier to local level had inquired, but some weren’t ready to make the move back to playing just T20 cricket. Anyone of any ability is welcome to come down and play. The Roar are playing in a six team competition, with all matches on Sundays. “Most games are within a 30 minute drive,” Doyle said. “We’re aiming for a list of about 14 or 15 players. It gives us a bit of flexibility if people aren’t available or are injured.” Doyle said they were still looking for a coach but if they were unable to secure one, they still had a good set-up to help the women’s teams. “We’ve got a couple of partners assisting them,” he said. “With [former men’s coach] Brad Hunter and myself, we’ve been rotating between the four of us.

“Both our men and women’s teams are training together. The girls understand that they aren’t a separate entity, they are integrated with the men’s and it’s fantastic.” The women’s side kicks off its season on October 13 against Glenroy. Meanwhile, the Roar men’s side has so far announced three signings as they make the move to VTCA. As first reported by the Star Weekly Weekly, the Roar has moved its top sides from the Gisborne and District Cricket Association to the VTCA, to give the players the opportunity to play on turf. Having previously announced the signing of bowler Jay King, they have now secured Nick Smith from Woodend, while Michael Treweek is returning to the club from Rupertswood. Magin’s medal moment By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions’ gun midfielder Alik Magin said there’s unfinished business for the side after a disappointing end to the Ballarat Football League season. In one of the closest seasons in history, the Lions were bundled out in an elimination final by Melton, having led at three-quarter time. Magin said it was something that burned in the group. “We sort-of have unfinished business finishing the way we did,” he said. “If everyone sticks together, and we get a couple more in, it’ll definitely put us in good stead going forward for next year.” While the season ended on a low for the Lions, Magin was recognised as the best player in the competition, winning the Henderson Medal at the league’s vote count. Magin finished on 25 votes, one clear of Sebastopol’s Tony Lockyer. The count came down to the final game of the year, with Magin needing at least two votes to share the medal. The Lions beat Bacchus Marsh in the final round and at the time coach Travis Hodgson said Lachie Bramble was clearly best on ground, while Jarrah Maksymow and Magin both had good games. Bramble polled one vote, while Bacchus Marsh’s Aaron Willitts picked up the two votes. Magin polled three votes. “We won by 80 points, so the whole team played well,” Magin said. “Jarrah kicked six and Lachie Bramble was everywhere all day. “You never know what will happen in a vote count, I’m stoked. I didn’t think I had it in me.” It’s the first time Magin has won a league best and fairest. Magin, who has been at the Lions for the past four seasons, returned to the form that saw him make an AFL list and dominate in the VFL. He said the coaching group had put a lot of faith in him. More time in the midfield in his preferred position also helped. “It was different this year, with more freedom,” he said. “[I was] backing myself and Trav left it up to me to run my own show, they were just there to keep everything structured “The likes of Bramble and Mitch Conn and Andy Duhau and Leigh Brennan and those sort of guys … now they take out the opposition’s best players. “The kids are coming through, it’s up to us to teach them as well.” Magin, who is already locked in for next season, said the club had been like home to him and he wasn’t interested in going anywhere else.

The Sunbury Kangaroos have reappointed premiership-winning coach Anthony Leydin for next season. In his second year coaching the Kangaroos, Leydin led them to the division 2 premiership in their first season in Essendon District Football League. Leydin has been appointed for one year. The Kangaroos will play in division 1 next season. Meanwhile, the club is after an under-18s boys coach and a women’s team coach. It will also field junior girls sides in the EDFL next year and is looking to have under-18s, under-15s, under-13s and under-11s. Coaches are being sought for all of those sides except under-18s. Gisborne has reappointed Danny Moore as its coach for next year’s FFV state league 4 west season. Moore joined the club midway through the season from Sunbury. Gisborne, which was playing in state league 4 for the first time, finished the season in ninth spot with six wins, including one over champions Altona North. Helen Smith will coach the women’s side.

Bendigo FNL

It was a case of close, but not close enough for a bunch of Gisborne stars at the Bendigo Football League best and fairest awards. In the Michelsen Medal, for the best senior footballer, Bulldogs’ Pat McKenna and Brad Bernacki finished on 15 votes each, one vote behind winner Adam Baird. In the Betty Thompson Medal, for the best A-grade netballer, Tiana Newman finished in second place, four votes behind winner Ashley Ryan. In other awards, Gisborne’s Hayden Doricic won the reserves best and fairest, Emily Floreani won the B-reserve netball best and fairest and Olivia Rodda shared the under-17 netball best and fairest award.

He said the playing group was pretty close and it was one of the main reasons for sticking around. Having never won a premiership, Magin said that was the focus. “It’s not about individual awards, you

play footy to win a grand final and that’s the ultimate goal. “If we can stick together the next few years, with the comp being so close, we’re definitely a chance next year.”

An old favourite returns to Macedon to coach again Macedon has turned to club favourite and former coach Al Meldrum to coach the senior side next year. The Riddell District Football League club announced on Friday night that Meldrum would return to the club and have his second stint as coach. He replaces Ben Tankard, who stood down after two years in charge. Meldrum said he was keen to get to work. He was playing coach between 2011-13 and previously coached Heathcote for three years. He has been playing with workmates at Avoca the past few years. “It is a really long association,” he said. “I played all my juniors and a couple of stints playing and obviously coaching and I’m looking forward to just focusing on coaching. “I’m getting too old to play and I’ve always been passionate about the coaching side. “The position was vacant and I really wanted to put my hat in the ring. I’m grateful to Dom [Andreacchio] and the club to give me the opportunity.” Meldrum takes over a side which finished

sixth. He knows he’s got plenty of work ahead of him with the club struggling for depth and having no under-19s this year. Meldrum said those two areas were at the top of his priority list, as well as getting stability at the club. He said when their seniors had been up the top, their reserves had usually been up there too. “It’s a pretty exciting time with a lot of hard work to do. “Local talent is the main focus and getting under-19s back on the park and attracting players back to the club. “I’ve heard a lot of noise about us being on the way down, I don’t think it’s the case. “I think we have to be smarter with strategy and we have to look at the long term. “We need a lot of things to go right and concentrate on the young people.” Having been part of the club before, Meldrum said he would look to use his contacts to get people back to the club. He said even if people didn’t want to play,

getting them back around the club and involved was still important. With Macedon being one of the smaller towns in the competition, they can’t afford to be losing players to other clubs. “Since 2010 that would have been hundreds who would have played for the club who have been lost to the club. “I’ll contact a lot of people and be selling the vision of the club. We want to invest in young people.” Meldrum said they also wanted to improve the bond between the junior and senior clubs to make the transition between the two a lot smoother. The senior coach is leading from the front, also taking on the under-9 coaching role. Sanders nets MVP award By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets star Ish Sanders capped off a stunning season, claiming the Big V men’s division 1 Most Valuable Player award. Sanders averaged nearly 27 points, five rebounds and three and half assists a game as he guided the Jets to the division 1 title, their first since 2019. Sanders said it was a surreal feeling to have been named the MVP. He had already been named the grand final MVP. “You work hard all off season in hope to perform at a high and consistent level. When you do that you put yourself in a really good position to be recognised and if you’re really lucky, to win a championship,” he said. “Honestly, I had a team of MVP’s this year, that’s why we accomplished what we did.” The Jets needed to come from behind in the grand final series to beat Warrandyte Venom 2-1. Sanders, who had always been keen to return to Sunbury, said it had been an amazing season, with the championship capping it off. “Personally, it was everything I wanted this season,” he said. “We had our ups and we definitely had our downs but the way we responded to those downs was what made this team special. “It’s always great to win a championship but I think as a team we did something even more extraordinary – we created a culture. “We have, in one season, completely turned this men’s program around and hopefully have created an atmosphere where fans love to come watch and players want to be around.” Sanders was also named in the All-Star Five team. He was quick to praise his teammates for their work this season. “These guys are very special,” he said. “Each player contributed greatly in some way to this team that shaped the outcome of this season. “We needed every single person on this team to accomplish what we did. “These guys sacrificed a ton this year, whether it was playing time or travelling a fair bit for practice, their sacrifices helped this team be successful.” Having had two successful seasons in Sunbury and with the Jets heading to championship division, Sanders hasn’t ruled out returning to the club. “There is always a possibility of me returning. named state championship women’s youth player of the year. Orla O’Reilly was named in the state championship women’s All-Star Five team.

Gisborne adds strength ahead of season It will be a new-look Gisborne side in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup this season. While the Dragons, who finished runners-up last season, have kept the core of their group together, there have been several changes throughout the off season. New coach Gavin Mackay said he was happy with how things looked after a big pre-season. “I think we will be OK” he said. “We have picked up a couple of guys who have wandered into town and it will strengthen us. We have a little more depth and the kids have grown another year.” The big signing for the Dragons is that of Mick Allen. Allen, who had a year off, has starred at both premier and subbies level, before returning to his local competition a couple of years ago. Mackay said Allen was keen to get into it. “Mick has been at every training and is really keen,” Mackay said. “I think the opportunity to play in McIntyre and with Riddell not playing McIntyre at that stage, he thought Gisborne might be a good fit. “We thought he was a good fit for us.” The Dragons last week announced Englishman Tom Sanders would be joining the club. Mackay said Sanders is a bowling all-rounder who would add to the side. On the other side, the Dragons have lost three players from the senior team. Jay King has gone to Sunbury, Jakson Knight to Spotswood and Recordo Gordon is not returning. As they have the past couple of years, the Dragons will look to give some younger players an opportunity. “Young Joel Garbutt played in McIntyre last year and is likely to move into the opening bowler role,” Mackay said. “There’s five or six others who are in the 17, 18, 19 bracket who have mostly been in the seconds.” The Dragons start their season on October 5 against Bacchus Marsh. Tigers roar

Richmond is heading into the 2019 AFL grand final in irresistible form. The Tigers have bared their claws in the second half of the season to enter the last Saturday in September on a scorching hot 11-game winning streak. Not only have the Tigers won every game since their mid-season bye, they have been winning well. Damien Hardwick’s yellow and black army are unbeaten since round 15 with an average winning margin of 34 points per game. The Tigers have picked off wins over the rest of the top four sides, so their form line is strong. They have also beaten their grand final opponent comprehensively in that span of games. Richmond’s greatest strength is its ability to swarm a contested ball situation. The Tigers out-number at the contest and find a way to nudge the ball forward through slick hands or toe pokes forward. Captain Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia are the chief ball winners at the coalface, but the willingness of the TIgers flankers and wingmen to get involved overwhelms their opponents and that was

evident in the second half of their come-from-behind win over Geelong Cats in the preliminary final at the MCG on Friday night. Richmond is not a one-trick team though it has two elite power forwards in Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt to kick to inside 50. Lynch was magnificent with five goals in the win over Geelong. Just as important to Richmond’s ability to put up a big score is its crumbing forwards and flankers, who are best in class. Shai Bolton, Jason Castagna, Daniel Rioli, Kane Lambert and Josh Caddy are the not-so-secret herbs and spices that give the Tigers forward line unpredictability. If there was one question mark over Richmond this season, it was how they would cope with the loss of defensive leader Alex Rance, who succumbed to a knee injury. It took a bit of time for the Tigers to adapt without Rance, but once they did, it has not proven to be too much of a burden. Dylan Grimes and David Astbury have been defensive pillars, while Nathan Broad and Nick Vlaustin have elevated their games.

Greater Western Sydney’s remarkable run has continued, with the competition’s newest side through to its first AFL grand final. Having been the underdog throughout their three finals matches, the Giants have held strong when they needed to. While Richmond will be clear favourites this week, you would be silly to write the Giants off. You only need to look back a few years and see what the Western Bulldogs did in 2016, to know it is possible. For the Giants, just three players – Heath Shaw, Matt De Boer and Shane Mumford – have played in a grand final. Saturday’s win against Collingwood at a packed MCG would have been the biggest crowd most of the group has played in front of. It’s good preparation for the Giants, with

Richmond’s fans just as loud, if not louder. The Giants have shown plenty of nerve throughout the finals. Zac Williams, who has dominated this season at half-back, showed he can be just as damaging in the middle. Josh Kelly has been inspiring, while Jeremy Cameron continues to kick goals. Matt De Boer is arguably the player of the finals – surely he gets Dustin Martin this week. The biggest question this week for the Giants will surround selection. Toby Greene is a definite in, returning from suspension. Can Lachie Whitfield play 10 or so days after having his appendix out? Does Stephen Coniglio, who hasn’t played since round 17, make a return for a knee injury? And how does captain Phil Davis pull up? Come Saturday, the Giants have the chance to write themselves in the history books.
