Sharks finally celebrate
Rupertswood has broken through for its first Riddell District Netball League A-grade premiership. The Sharks were made to work hard, with the grand final win against Macedon coming down to the wire. The Sharks, who trailed for most of the day, snatched a thrilling 44-43 victory. A plan to develop 615 residential lots in Gisborne has been approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The plan attracted 166 objections from local residents and has been described as “out of step” with the town’s rural character. Developer ID_Land lodged a proposal for 39 Willowbank Road, Gisborne with the tribunal after Macedon Ranges council failed to make a decision within the required timeframe.
The original plan included development of 711 lots and was unanimously rejected by councillors during their June meeting. Councillors raised concerns about the development’s lot sizes, increased traffic, the impact on local infrastructure and how the proposal met the character of the town. VCAT approved an amended development plan, comprising 615 residential lots and an increase in the average lot sizes from 595 square metres to about 680 square metres. A state primary school is expected to be built
during stage one of the development. ID_Land joint director Matthew Belford said the council had requested an increase in the average size of the lots. “ID_Land was happy to accommodate [and] is very pleased to have reached an agreement,” he said. However, Gisborne resident Ben Peck said Gisborne was lacking the required infrastructure to cope with “extra population”. “I’m still disappointed that these kinds of developments are getting approved in areas
where they are not wanted or needed,” he said. “The community doesn’t want it at all. It didn’t need to be of this size and scale, which doesn’t fit in with the community of Gisborne at all.” Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the development plan was “out of step” with the town’s rural character. The council’s planning and environment director Angela Hughes said council was satisfied the amended plan met the requirements of the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme.

App-lause for superhero students By Jessica Micallef Natalie, Emily, Janella, Christine and Holly are tech superheroes. The five Salesian College Sunbury students won the state and national heat of the Tech Girl Superhero Challenge at Melbourne last month for their creation of an app known as Codie. The challenge helps increase female participation in the area of computer science. Designed by the students, Codie – the app’s character, checks in with young people, offers space to get help with developing skills in
reflection, breathing and de-escalation and has a planner to help with time management. The students have been invited to fly to Silicon Valley in August next year to meet with app developers to pitch Codie to tech giants Facebook and Google. Principal Mark Brockhus said he was proud of the students’ achievements. “It is important for students to have the opportunity to take part in such programs and set themselves goals to challenge themselves and learn something new,” he said. “Our college motto is striving in life and this
is exactly what these students have done. These five students have put a tremendous amount of effort into designing this app to assist in developing positive coping strategies in young people. “They developed Codie with primary school-aged children in mind. Wineries ready for Budburst taste fest Fine wine and good food will be on the menu at this year’s Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Budburst Festival. More than 25 wineries across the region will open their cellar doors for the two-day event, serving up the best of local wines. Hunter Gatherer Winery owner Brian Martin said this year’s festival was the fourth year he was participating. “At our winery we will have live music from a local singer Sarah Wilkinson – she’s an acoustic singer,” he said. “A friend of ours who is a winemaker works at Hanging Rock Winery
and during the last two Budbursts, he’s come to our place and cooked gourmet woodfire pizza. We’ll probably have a barbecue going as well. There’s a couple of food options plus music and lots of wine tasting.” Mr Martin said up to 500 wine lovers are expected to attend his Pipers Creek winery during the festival. “It’s been getting bigger every year,” Mr Martin said. “Hopefully it continues to grow. “It’s pretty enjoyable. I love chatting to people and there’s a real buzz … everyone’s in a good mood.
“When they’re moving from winery to winery, there are new things around the corner every time. It’s a new experience, rather than … sitting at the one winery all day. “We’ll have riesling, chardonnay, pinot, shiraz and rose. I think the prosecco is going to be the go-to drink if the weather is nice.” The festival will be on November 9-10. Buses have been organised to transport visitors between wineries. A proposal for a Kyneton District Health and Hepburn Health Service merger is a step closer. Chief executive of the two health services Maree Cuddihy last week announced the proposal for voluntary amalgamation was approved by the two health service boards. The proposal has since been submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services for review and approval by the state government. In February, the two services announced they were exploring a potential merger to combine the management and governance of the two organisations under one entity as Central Highlands Rural Health. Ms Cuddihy said the union would improve the organisations’ capabilities. “The proposal aims to enhance the capability of the health services to meet the needs of the community,” she said. “The submission was approved by the boards following extensive community and staff consultation, due diligence assessment and careful consideration for the benefits and issues.” The services have shared Ms Cuddihy as chief executive for more than two years. She said there would be no reduction in services, staffing or funding. Hospitals and facilities will remain at their current locations in Kyneton, Daylesford, Creswick, Clunes and Trentham. Kyneton District Health board president Peter Matthews said the proposal focused on delivering a strong health service for the community. “It will ensure a sustainable and positive future,” he said. Jessica Cochran is ready to shine a light on her personal experiences. The Sunbury resident will be performing alongside Hadley Johnson and Xavier Gouault in a show called Qualia at the Melbourne Fringe Festival later this month. Cochran, 29, said the show highlights what it’s like to be in a “public psychiatric unit” for 24 hours with a disability. “It focuses on people who have a bit of extra trouble accessing services, especially if you come from a background of being someone who is deaf … a young person who happens to be in a wheelchair and someone who is new to Australia,” she said. Cochran, who has a physical disability, said the performance would draw on the actors’

own personal experiences. “It’s part of why it’s so unique because we are not using third-party actors,” she said. “I’ve been in and out of the psych system since I was 12-years old. People often have this view of what it might be like to be in a psych unit and often that in itself is a bit of a misguided view. “It’s [the performance] given me the chance to take ownership of those experiences. “It’s great to be able to use my experiences and hopefully get the conversation started.” Qualia will be performed at the Northcote Town Hall on September 20-22. Cricket campaign a hit
Park name almost reserved
By Jessica Micallef Chelsea’s dream to play cricket has come true. After a visit from Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce at St Mary’s Primary School Lancefield, Chelsea, 10, was inspired to speak up about her dream to have a girls cricket team at the Romsey Cricket Club. “We were learning government at school,” Chelsea said. “The local mayor came to school. She asked for ideas and she said she would be happy for the ideas to be emailed.” Chelsea did just that. With help from her father, she sent an email to Ms Pearce in July, asking to get a girls’ cricket program up and running. Chelsea also plays netball at the Romsey Football Netball Club. “We wanted to do a girls’ cricket team in Romsey because there were so many girls in our netball team that would be interested in playing cricket,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to play cricket but I haven’t wanted to play with the boys.” Macedon Ranges council allocated $1500 during its August meeting to implement a girls’ cricket program at the club. Chelsea’s father Tim McCarthy said he was proud of his daughter for getting the ball rolling. “Good on her for doing that,” he said. “At the cricket club here in Romsey, within five years we’d like to have a really full-blown junior girls program that is as strong as the boys.” Cr Pearce congratulated Chelsea on her efforts. “I’d like to say thanks to Chelsea from St Mary’s Primary School in Lancefield who, with her father, put in the submission grant for consideration,” she said.

A move to name a reserve in Sunbury after a community identity is a step closer. During last Monday’s Hume council meeting, the council approved a proposal to name a reserve in the Rosenthal Estate the Angela Potts Park, after Angela Millett (nee Potts). The council will submit the name to the Geographic Names Victoria for consideration. Born and raised in Sunbury, Ms Millett married local farmer Thomas Millett in 1964. Together they raised seven children in Rosenthal. Ms Millett was an active volunteer, dedicating her time to schools, sports groups and other community events and initiatives in Sunbury. She died on January 16, 1991, aged 53 after a long battle with cancer. Ms Millett’s son Paul Millett said naming the park after his mum was a great way to honour her. “She would be quietly chuffed,” he said. The Rosenthal estate is being developed by the Millett family business TF & M Millett Pty Ltd. In February, Hume council received a proposal from Urban Design and Management on behalf of Ms Millett’s family to name a reserve after her. Call to end solitary confinement By Jessica Micallef Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass is calling on the state government to prohibit solitary confinement at Malmsbury’s Youth Justice Centre. Ms Glass inspected Port Phillip Prison, Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct and secure welfare services in Ascot Vale and Maribyrnong in March and April to look at each facility’s use of solitary confinement on young people. According to a report released by Ms Glass earlier this month, there were 13,000 instances,
across a 12-month period, when a child or young person was isolated during lockdown at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct. About 40 per cent of the lockdowns were attributed to staff shortages. Ms Glass said young people were often separated for weeks, even when they appeared to have little or no risk of harm to others. “Legislation and official procedures acknowledge that children and young people should be isolated only as a last resort and for the minimum time necessary,” she said. “But we found the procedures do not
translate into practice. The direct impact is that many of the practices in both our youth justice and prison systems are likely to be contrary to law, incompatible with Victoria’s human rights legislation, oppressive, discriminatory or simply wrong. “In many cases we reviewed, the justification for separation seemed questionable and punitive.” The Ombudsman made 27 recommendations to the state government earlier this month, including prohibiting solitary confinement and reviewing how young people are managed
in the corrections system with the potential to relocate them out of mainstream prisons into a dedicated facility. “Children and young people can be irrational, volatile and unable to self-regulate, presenting behaviour that is more challenging and extreme than many adults,” Ms Glass said. “The scientific evidence is compelling that young people, until 25-years-old are still developing physically, neurologically and socially. It is why solitary confinement on children and young people poses such a serious risk of long-term harm.”

Marnie Hibbert is used to being behind the camera but she was in full focus at The Rise International Photography Awards. The Sunbury photographer received a bronze award for two of her photos during the competition in Brisbane last month. Hibbert said she was honoured to have received the awards. “It’s fantastic to be recognised,” she said. “After watching two days of judging for gold, I realised how critical judges were and it gave me more credit for what I had actually achieved. I thought it was amazing to get that far.” Hibbert’s photography specialty is capturing precious moments between newborns and their families. Council recently investigated a proposal for a full road closure of Farrell Street, New Gisborne. After receiving comments from land and business owners, Council, with the support of VicRoads, now proposes to alter the turning movement instead. Under Section 207A and Schedule 11 Clause 9 of the Local Government Act 1989, Macedon Ranges Shire Council is proposing to permanently prohibit cars turning right out of Farrell Street at the intersection with Station Road, New Gisborne. SPORT Heartbreak for Macedon after losing a thriller Macedon’s dreams of back-to-back Riddell District Netball League premierships ended on Sunday, but it wasn’t without a fight. In a grand final to remember, the Cats fell agonisingly short against Rupertswood, with one goal the final margin. The Cats looked the likely winners having led for most of the match. But the Sharks refused to give up and kept the pressure on. It was goal for goal late, with the Sharks winning 44-43. Cats playing coach Ciara Stewart said it was an outstanding game of netball. “I thought I would be more devastated about it being one goal, but I’m not,” she said. “Our girls were outstanding. We couldn’t play the perfect game and it was the odd errors we did make that were costly.” Stewart admitted they weren’t at full
strength, but still put out a really strong game. She said they didn’t pick up as many intercepts as they would have liked. “We need to get 16 intercepts and as a team we got eight. “It was tight player on player and we didn’t get the clean recoveries which would have given us more chances.” With the Sharks coming at the Cats in the last quarter, the Cats needed everything to go their way. In a big hit for them, Karlee De Bono went off injured late in the game. De Bono had battled a torn calf throughout the finals series. “She was still able to play three quarters and we were happy with that,” Stewart said. “I looked at her at the start of the last quarter as she was sore, but she said she was right,” she said.

“I probably should have made that change then, as we lost an attacker, but that’s the way it goes.
“We couldn’t have done anything else. Players like Shannon [Blackman] and Clare [Johnson] come through for them in the end.” Chloe Wilson was outstanding for the Cats, shooting 40 goals from 43 attempts to be their best. Stewart said despite not being able to replicate what they did last season, it was a season to be proud of. “We had the same side as we had last year and the year before,” she said. “We’re just a group of friends doing what we do.” It was a tough day for the Cats’ under-19 girls, losing the grand final to the Sharks, 31-11. Sharks taste premiership glory By Tara Murray The missing piece of the puzzle is finally complete for Rupertswood in the Riddell District Netball League. Having claimed 13 premierships in the five years across three grades, the Sharks hadn’t been able to get the one they wanted most – the A-grade premiership. On Sunday, that changed with the Sharks claiming the A-grade premiership by the barest of margins. After a number of blowouts in A-grade grand finals in recent years, this one was a thriller against Macedon. It came down to the dying seconds, with the Sharks claiming the win 44-43. Sharks coach Di McCormack said she had no words after finally claiming the premiership they had been after. “All the way through the game it was a battle,” she said. “I knew I had to do something to change their momentum and change what they did. “A few tweaks and putting more pressure on Chloe [Wilson], she was on fire today and she was the one we had to shut down. “We pulled together as a team and played some combos we hadn’t tried before.” Macedon got the first break in the first quarter, to open up a two-goal lead. The Cats, who were looking to go back-to-back, were able to keep the lead throughout the rest of the first and second quarters. The margin got out to four goals, but every time the Cats looked to be getting away with it, the Sharks would respond. McCormack, who wasn’t afraid to make changes throughout the season, threw out some different combinations. Amy Starzer got her first court time of the finals series, coming on in the second quarter as goal shooter. Grace Markovic, who started in goal defence, moved into wing defence in the second half. McCormack said it was about bringing intensity and some fresh legs, and both players really stood up. “Amy brought a different look to the circle,” she said. “I thought Grace’s tall hands over the ball in the windy conditions would make them put the ball up higher. “We were just trying to get the match-ups right.” The Sharks took the lead in the third quarter, but it was the Cats turn to respond. The margin was two goals at three-quarter time in favour of the Cats. With the game on the line, McCormack made more changes. She took off team-of-the-year midcourters Prue Stanley and Ailish McCormack.

Tee Salanoa came back on in a surprise position of wing attack. “It was one out of the bag and Tee didn’t know it was coming,” Di McCormack said. “I thought Ailish had done a huge part of work and they had tried to shut her down. “Tee is just so strong. We had to do something to break Macedon’s rhythm.” Scores were level at 39, before the two teams traded goals. With the pressure on, both sides missed shots they would normally get. The Sharks held their nerve to win. McCormack said it was about getting in front and making sure they shut down Cats goaler Chloe Wilson. Wilson shot 40 goals from 43 attempts. For the Sharks, Hannah Keane was brilliant in goals playing beyond her 16 years. Matilda Elliot, who came on in the first quarter in goal defense, was named best on court for her defensive efforts. She produced a number of turnovers late in
the game, helping her side get the win. McCormack said Elliot was brilliant and has a never-say-die attitude. McCormack said everyone who stepped on the court played their role. “It was more so the intensity was there and the need for fresh legs,” she said. “Even to bring Jade [O’Shannessy] on right at the end and to do what she did, was outstanding. “I thought everyone put out a great effort. It was more about getting the match-ups right.” The A-grade premiership capped off a good day for the Sharks, winning three netball premierships. The under-19s and C-grade both had big wins against Macedon and Diggers Rest respectively. The B-grade side, which was looking for a sixth straight premiership, lost to Romsey in overtime. Rupertswood takes the title By Tara Murray The monkey is off the back and Rupertswood is finally Riddell District Football League premiers. The memories of close calls and past failures were put to one side as the Sharks put in a display worthy of a premiership on Sunday. Taking on massive underdogs Wallan, who had surprised everyone to get that deep into the finals, the Sharks were the better side on the day. The game was all but over at half-time, with the Sharks leading by 48 points. They would extend that in the second half, to run away with a 21.10 (136)-8.3 (51) win. Sharks coach Nick Ash said it was a proud moment for the club. “The club has worked really hard,” he said. “They had that four to five years when they first got to the RDFL, they couldn’t win a final. “They had the monkey over their heads for a period, before we got two finals wins in 2017. “Going out in straight sets last year was really hard to take. “This year we would strip it back and get back to what we do best.” Ash, who has been part of premiership sides at Riddell, said there was the look in the eyes of the playing group even back at pre-season, that it was their time. He said they had surrounded a bunch of talented local players with the right players and personalities to improve the side. “I just knew with this group this year, we’d have our ups and downs and come the business end of the year we’d be ready to go.” Ash knows luck and a healthy squad plays a large part in a finals series. He said it was a credit to Wallan to have got so far despite missing several players with injuries. For the Sharks, they had their strongest team on the park and it showed. Jake Sutton returned to the side, having finished his commitments with the Calder Cannons. “We knew it wasn’t gong to be easy,” he said. “If we put everything out on the park today and played for two hours, we didn’t worry about the result at the end of the game. “If we were committed and did all that, the result would look after itself.” The Sharks set the game up in the midfield, with the extra depth playing a big key. Ash said it’s a luxury to have the likes of Brent Swallow, Matty Knight sand Billy Cannolo in the midfield rotation. “Our work rate and effort was fantastic.” While the game was in their control at half-time, Ash still wasn’t relaxed. It wasn’t until the final siren that Ash really relaxed. Nick Grigg kicked seven goals and was named best on ground, winning the Doug McIntyre Medal.

Brent Swallow was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal. Ash said he couldn’t single any performances out, with everyone playing their role. The premiership came almost 10 years to the day since their last senior premiership in the VAFA. Ash was quick to pay tribute to former coach Kevin Fitzgerald, along with the other senior coaches at the club and junior coaches.
He said Fitzgerald, who Ash was assistant coach to for two years, set them in the direction to get where they are now. “The whole club are good people and it’s a pleasure to coach them.” The senior premiership was the second football flag for the Sharks on the day. Their under-19s defeated Woodend-Hesket to continue their good record. The reserves weren’t so lucky, losing
to Wallan. Ash said it was a massive effort to have all three football sides in finals. “Just having three sides training all the way through finals and people putting pressure on for spots, as a coach it’s all you can ask for. “It was hard to pick a side, but we put 22 on the park that got the job done. “It was a shame that the reserves couldn’t get the job done.”

Rupertswood captain Brent Swallow said they had silenced some of their critics after finally claiming a Riddell District Football League senior premiership. Swallow, who has been through all the finals disappointment since moving to the RDFL, said it was really good to finally get that flag. “It’s only been four or five years in the making and silence some critics I guess,” he said. “We got in the players we needed and were missing last year. “Having a healthy list at this time of year helps, I’m over the moon about it to finally get there.” Having won two finals at Clarke Oval during this finals campaign, the Sharks were confident they had an advantage over the Magpies going into the weekend’s match. The Sharks jumped out of the blocks and led by 48 points at half-time.

Swallow said while they were happy, they weren’t getting comfortable. “We tried to keep it low-key to be honest, we knew we were up by a bit. “If we can put eight goals on in a quarter, so could they. “The object was to kick the first few of the third quarter, which we did. “We knew we were fit, it was just a matter of time before we broke them.” With the game all but over at three-quarter time, it was a bit of party time after that. Swallow said it was the sort of performance that they wanted to put out. “Getting Seany [Hetherington] and Billy [Cannolo] back from the VFL helps,” he said. “Sugar [Kayne Murphy] is flying, Lochie [Muir] is flying and [Dean] Putty is flying. “It’s the first finals series we’ve had Putty fit and he makes a huge difference. “It was just a whole team performance and
shows what we can do when we put a game together.” Swallow, who kicked two goals, was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal as one of the best on ground. One of the competition’s best midfielders, Swallow has spent a lot of time in the forward line during the finals. After claiming the premiership, he revealed why. “I only moved forward cause of my injury,” he said. “I tore my medial in the last round of the season and I limped through the finals series. “I was just hoping it wasn’t an ACL. Nash [Egan] is a physio and he was pretty confident I could be out there playing. “I adapted and we do bat so deep, there’s less pressure to get up in the midfield and I can play a role down forward.” Tara Murray

Romsey beats favourites to flag By Tara Murray Romsey ended Rupertswood’s winning streak in a thrilling Riddell District Netball League B-grade competition grand final. Rupertswood, which was looking for a sixth straight premiership, entered the grand final as favourites, having lost only two matches since 2017. But the Redbacks pushed them to the limit and snared a 43-41 win in overtime. No more than four goals separated the two teams throughout the game. Both teams had chances to win in the fourth quarter, but neither could deliver the final blow, with plenty of turnovers. Scores were level at 35 apiece at the end of regular time, forcing overtime. The Redbacks got out to an early lead in overtime, which proved crucial. There was just one goal in it with 30 seconds to go. Hope Evans scored her 35th goal in the dying seconds to seal the win. Redbacks playing coach Lauren Anglin said it was pretty exciting to claim the premiership. “They have beaten us every time we’ve played them this year,” she said. “It always felt like we had the ability to have a win, but we haven’t been able to put our best effort out. “I felt like today, when it got tough, we stuck at it, we kept going and it was fantastic.” Anglin, who was awarded the best on court medal, said the two sides were very different. While the Sharks were younger with plenty of speed and fitness, the Redbacks had the experience. She said that experience was really important when it mattered. “Six or seven of us have played A-grade in the last 12 months and were part of an A-grade side

that played finals last year, “We are older and perhaps with that comes a little bit of wisdom, you can’t underestimate that. “They are a fitter team than we are, to win in extra time, that’s really pleasing.” Anglin was thrilled with the pressure late in the game, which allowed goalkeeper Kendra Vann to get some important intercepts.
She said her biggest concern heading into extra time, was whether to make some switches. “I couldn’t decide, do I give myself a rest and put Danni [Davidson] in there, or do I want her switching with Stace [Deimos] for fresh legs. “Having the fresh legs in that part of the court worked out for us.” Another standout for the Redbacks was goal shooter Hope Evans. Evans was the best shooter
on the court, shooting 35 from 42 attempts. Anglin said having Evans in the circle made life so much easier. “She has shot 95 per cent of goals this year, whether it has been Griz [Alicija Marko Rawlings] or Christie [Brinkhuis], with her. “She is a stalwart. You back her all the time.” For the Sharks, Victoria Abdulnour shot 29 goals after coming on during the first quarter.
