Depot works power up By Jessica Micallef Construction has begun on a larger Kyneton power depot. Electricity distribution business Powercor invested $10 million to build a new Kyneton-based depot on Redesdale Road, down the road from the existing depot. The depot will have improved office areas, storage for equipment and fleet, additional parking and truck sheds and wash areas. The project is expected to support Powercor’s expansion of its workforce. Kyneton field leader Phil Robinson said the upgrade will help reinforce Powercor’s commitment to the Macedon Ranges. “Our local depot allows crews to manager and respond quickly to network faults and customer needs,” he said. “The current facility was built 40 years ago. It was built in a different era to accommodate different equipment and trucks. “The works will allow us to construct a fit-for-purpose facility that can accommodate the large, modern equipment our crews use to maintain electrical infrastructure.” The current depot was built in 1979 and accommodates 20 employees including field crews, engineers and planners. The new depot is expected to support up to a 25 per cent increase in field resources. Crews and employees at the depot support customers in Kyneton, Woodend, Trentham, Redesdale, Spring Hill, Malmsbury, Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey, Lancefield and Pyalong. In the Macedon Ranges, employees at the current depot operate and maintain more than 16,000 electricity poles, 2137 kilometres of powerlines and almost 3900 distribution transformers that deliver power to more than 21,827 Powercor customers. Construction of the new Redesdale Road depot startd last month. The depot is expected to be completed by mid next year.
The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival will soon be in full bloom. Festival secretary Margaret Dearricott said the event, now in its 47th year, was a spectacular way to welcome in spring. “Kyneton has wonderful daffodils that grow well here and it always makes a wonderful display,” she said. “It’s a great thing to build a festival on. There are a number of special features – there’s the spring flower show, concerts, but I think a lot of people see the grand parade on the very last day as the great showpiece of the festival. “One thousand people are in the parade itself. There are bands, floats, marching groups from community groups, wonderful cars and a few special fun attractions.” About 20,000 people are expected to make their way to Kyneton for the 11-day festival. “It’s great for locals but a lot of visitors do come as well,” Ms Dearricott said. “We have the tradition of having a festival king and queen and prince and princess. We’ve got ferret racing and a dog dash – they are big fun events. The dog dash is really hilarious, people really love their dogs.” The festival begins on Thursday, September 5 and runs until Sunday, September 15. Details: kynetondaffodilarts.org.au MARG DEARRICOTT

New model for aged care By Jessica Micallef Apartment-style living is being planned as part of a $60 million redevelopment of aged care facilities in the Macedon Ranges. Aged care provider Benetas is hoping to build an apartment complex for older residents at the St Mary’s Medical Centre site on Neal Street, Gisborne. The apartments, which will each have their own care team for residents, are part of a four-stage plan by Benetas to refurbish existing facilities and extend allied health
and home care services. As part of the plan, Gisborne Oaks Residential Aged Care, also on Neal Street, will have its lounge and dining rooms remodeled and refurnished, the kitchen upgraded and a new private dining room added for residents and their families. The refurbishment is expected to start at the end of the year and be completed by early 2020. Macedon Ranges Health Centre will be renovated to maximise office space and a new retirement village is being planned for land neighbouring the centre.

Returning to a place where it began Leigh Ellis has been to many basketball courts around America in recent years, but he said there’s something special about coming back to Sunbury’s Eric Boardman Stadium. Ellis, who found his love of basketball while growing up in Sunbury, has been part of the podcast The Starters [formerly known as the The Basketball Jones] and has made a name for himself in NBA media circles. “My life’s journey has taken me all over the world and to the NBA which would have been my dream as a 12-year-old boy,” he said. “It [Boardman Stadium] has changed so much

It was a five week trip and they invited me to go on that trip. “When we got back to Toronto, I said I would love to continue working with you full-time.” From there the show got picked up by NBA TV in 2013-14 and the group moved to Atlanta. The three men arrested and charged for shooting at a police car in Sunbury will remain in custody until their next court appearance. Police were patrolling the area of Horne Street last Tuesday when shots were fired at their vehicle about 3.15am. The uniformed officers drove their car to a nearby McDonald’s restaurant and sought cover inside. The patrol car was shot at again and a silver sedan rammed the vehicle before speeding off. The dog squad, specialist response units and police helicopters were sent as back up. Three McDonald’s employees were escorted out of the restaurant. The men were charged last Tuesday night. A 26-year-old man was charged with discharging a firearm at a vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and prohibited possession of a firearm. An 18-year-old man was charged with discharging a firearm at a vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and prohibited possession of a firearm and armed robbery and a 33-year-old man was charged with discharging a firearm at a vehicle and reckless conduct endangering serious injury. All three appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Wednesday. No application for bail was made. They have been remanded in custody until their next court hearing on November 6. Mark chases his dream
Sunbury line upgrade tracking well
By Jessica Micallef Mark Janson’s dream is to walk again. The Sunbury resident suffered an aneurism at the back of his right knee on June 19. “I fell to the ground, I couldn’t get back up,” Mr Janson said. “I crawled in the house to get my phone. I rang Kylie [daughter] and Kylie said I should just ring the ambulance.” Mr Janson, 57, was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery. “The doctors said they had a 40 per cent chance of saving my leg,” he said. “I said, ‘if you’ve got to cut it off, cut it off. It is what it is.’” He went through five more operations before doctors delivered the news that his leg needed to be amputated. “It’s still better than dying,” he said. Mr Janson is no stranger to fighting back to health, he suffered a stroke five years ago and is determined not to let this latest health battle get the best of him. Mr Janson, is currently relying on a wheelchair to get around and is hoping to have a prosthetic leg soon. “I want to get back walking, drive my car. I’ve got my jet ski, fishing boats. I want to do all that again and go back to work” Mr Janson is hoping to get a prosthetic leg that is waterproof. They cost about $60,000. Mr Janson’s daughter Kylie Swain has set up a fundraiser evening and a GoFundMe Page to help with the costs. “We have had heaps of donations. We’re doing bogan bingo and a lot of businesses in Sunbury have donated towards the food.” Mr Janson’s fundraiser is on Saturday, August 31, from 6pm at Diggers Rest Football Club, Plumpton Road. Major works on the Sunbury line are expected to begin by the end of the year. The Sunbury line upgrade was funded in the 2019-20 state budget and includes more than $200 million towards platform extensions at stations between Sunbury and Footscray, wheelchair boarding platforms at eight stations, traction power upgrades and improvements to train stabling at Sunbury, Calder Park and Watergardens. The project will also pave the way for the fleet of 65 new high-capacity Metro trains to run all the way to Sunbury when the Metro Tunnel is completed, expected to be by 2025. Site investigations for platform extensions and stabling upgrades along the route will start later this month. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the high-capacity trains would help reduce congestion and carry an extra 113,000 passengers during peak travel hours. “Work will start within weeks,” she said. “We’re not wasting a moment delivering these vital upgrades, which will pave the way for new, high-capacity trains on the Sunbury line. “Sunbury passengers will be some of the biggest beneficiaries of the Metro Tunnel and new high-capacity trains, and this project is a critical part of delivering those benefits.” Jessica Micallef

Pavilion proposal approved
Hume council has approved a proposal to name a pavilion at the John McMahon Reserve in Sunbury after the late Jessy Carroll. Mr Carroll died on November 17 last year after a three year battle with stage four non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma. He played for Sunbury United and East Sunbury cricket clubs. Community consultation on the proposal to rename the pavilion went for 30 days. Feedback was received in support of the proposal and no formal objections were received.

Charity climbers fire up Eight Sunbury CFA volunteers will band together and take on the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb charity event next month. Firefighters will climb 28 floors at the Crown Metropol Hotel, while wearing 25 kilograms of turnout gear and breathing apparatus. Money raised from the event will go towards Lifeline, Black Dog Institute and the Emergency Services Foundation. Sunbury CFA First Lieutenant Paul Brown said mental health awareness held a special place in his heart. “The types of jobs we go to, we do see some pretty bad things,” he said. “If we can help those people, it in turn helps their family.”
This will be the second year the Sunbury CFA has participated in the event, raising $6000 in 2018. This year, volunteers have stepped up their fundraising game. “We’re doing a painted helmet raffle,” Leutenant Brown said. “We’ve got three helmets that we’ve had airbrushed for the event and they’re actually amazing. Glass cut from Ranges recycling By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges council is urging residents to separate glass from their recycling materials. The council and its waste contractor Four Seasons Waste have been seeking alternative options for processing the area’s recycling following the closure of SKM Recycling this month. An alternative processor has been identified but they will not accept glass. The council’s acting assets and operations director Anne-Louise Linder urged residents to remove glass from their recycling bin, effective

immediately. “We really hope the community will come on board and help us to remove glass from recycling bins,” she said. “Shards and small pieces of glass can become embedded in paper and cardboard in recycling bins and contaminate the other recyclables.”
The council will conduct bin audits in the coming weeks and will be monitoring the glass levels in bins. Ms Linder said council is still exploring options regarding alternative processors. “It is not possible to enter any agreement until bin audits demonstrate glass has been removed from the recycling stream,” she said. “Several processors in Victoria accept mixed recycling, however their capacity is limited and processing costs are high due to the greater demand from local government costumers. “It is important to note, sending recycling to
landfill also comes at a cost to council as there are no council-owned landfills in the shire.” Residents can take glass recyclables free of charge to council’s transfer stations in Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey. Lancefield residents who are currently taking part in a glass recycling trial can continue to use their glass only bins provided as part of the trial. The state government recently announced a $6.6 million package to help the 33 councils affected by SKM’s closure. Council will consider long-term recycling options at its next meeting on August 28.
Bread-winning collection Gisborne Montessori School pupils are not loafing around. Pupils are busy collecting bread tags to send to South African organisation Bread Tags for Wheelchairs, which then sells them to be recycled. All money raised goes toward providing wheelchairs for children and adults in South Africa. School principal Dianne Davis said a Bread Tags for Wheelchairs advertisement inspired two pupils to get behind the initiative. “It came purely from the children,” she said. “They thought it was an amazing idea. We’ve got a little boy who has cerebral palsy and he’s in a wheelchair. “We’ve been collecting bread tags for a fortnight now and we are planning on it being an ongoing thing that we can contribute to.” Ms Davis said the school community had responded well to the school’s call for bread
tags. Pupils have set up collection points throughout the school. “We’ve already got a significant number of bread tags collected,” she said. “The girls have put a great collection of buckets outside each classroom and they have put notices around the school which they drafted and typed up themselves. “The importance of giving back is really a big part of our school.” Details: breadtagsforwheelchairs.co.za Jessica Micallef

What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I was born and raised in Melbourne and when I got married and started a family, I moved to the country and purchased a property in Greendale. I fell in love with the area and moved to Blackwood and now East Trentham. My current – and final property – is nestled deep in the forest in the Macedon Ranges which provides the idyllic setting to operate a wildlife shelter where our rehabilitated animals can be raised and released into the wild. I am a member of a fantastic group of people that form the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network. To me, the Macedon Ranges provide great friends, a wonderful community, a beautiful environment and a fabulous lifestyle. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about animal welfare. I cannot tolerate any form of animal cruelty. Many human activities cause harmful impacts on our native animals and I feel compelled to do everything in my power to help animals in need of assistance. deliver the bird to the shelter. We currently have 13 kangaroos in our lounge room – five are small joeys in pouches and the others are larger joeys in various states of recovery. We recently conducted a gradual release of 26 kangaroos into the wild, many of which come back home every night for their dinner which allows us to monitor their progress.

What inspired you to open your animal rescue shelter? I read an article in the local newspaper about a woman in Blackwood who operated a wildlife shelter where sick, injured and orphaned wildlife were taken into care for rehabilitation and rearing. I cut the article out and kept it under my phone in case I ever came across such an animal and needed to call for help. Many months later, I found an injured tawny frogmouth in my front yard and remembered the article … and I called and arranged to

SPORT Bulldogs rejoice in Groundhog Day final victory Gisborne has snuck home in an elimination final against Bacchus Marsh for a second straight year in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition. Having beaten the Cobras by three points last season in the corresponding game, the Bulldogs this time got the job done by four points on Sunday. The final scoreline was 6.2 (38)-5.4 (34). Bulldogs coach Jason Peak said he was nervous as the last quarter unfolded. “I need a stiff drink after that,” he said. “We were in front for most of the game. They kicked three goals in the first 10 minutes of the last quarter and got in front. “We managed to kick the last two goals. There were plenty of nerves. “I said to them after the game, the first 10 minutes of the last quarter was their worst football and the second 10 minutes of the last quarter was their best football.”
Peak said the football wasn’t pretty, with the weather turning wet early and the match becoming a bit of a slog. “We were able to put our head over the ball and do it for longer than them,” he said. Peak said it was a team performance that got the Bulldogs over the line. Kirrily Mitchell, Stephanie Larsen, Stephanie Brancatisano and Marilyn Elder were the standouts. Elder kicked the Bulldogs’ final two goals. Peak said the Cobras would have been disappointed to go down in similar circumstances to those of last year. “That’s two years in a row it’s been decided by a kick,” he said. “Last year, they had a kick after the siren and missed it. “They would be disappointed, that’s for sure.” The Bulldogs will face Melton Centrals in a knockout semi-final after Centrals suffered a big loss at the hands of East Point.
East Point will play Redan for a spot in the grand final. Peak said the Bulldogs would take a lot of confidence into their semi-final. “We played them once during the season and had a win against them,” he said. “It was our best game of the season. Because we’ve beaten them, we’re 50-50 as far as I’m concerned. “If we do the right thing, we’re a good chance of getting the win.” Peak said it was a bonus for the Bulldogs that they were close to getting their full complement of players. On Sunday, they had 20 players – the most they’ve had in recent weeks. “We’re likely to have 21 available,” he said. “We’ll have everyone available besides those who are out for the year. “It’s a good time to have everyone back.” Tara Murray

Bombers ready for finals By Tara Murray Riddell will take strong form into the Riddell District Football League finals. Having had the toughest run home, with their past six matches against other finals sides, the Bombers have gone 5-1. On Saturday, they knocked off Romsey to deny the Redbacks the minor premiership. The Bombers scored the only two goals of the last quarter to seal the 11.10 (76)-10.7 (67) win. Bombers co-coach Jamie Elliott said it was a hard game with the ground making for tough conditions. “The ground was buggered and it was hard on the legs,” he said. “Romsey looked good at times and we looked good at times. “We dominated the first 10 minutes of the game and then the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. “The rest of the time, Romsey played catch-up. At three-quarter time, Romsey led
by a couple of points. It was good for the young kids to stand up.” Ethan Foreman kicked five goals for the Bombers, while Nathan Croft kicked three goals, including the winner. For the Redbacks, Joel Naylor kicked three goals, with Connor Whelan named their best. Despite the win, Riddell slipped from third to fourth. Second through to fourth finished equal on points, with Romsey and Rupertswood having a better percentage. Elliott said they knew that they needed to win by a big margin to stay in third. “It was a dead rubber in the last 10 minutes for us, but the boys still wanted to get the win.” Having played the top teams in recent weeks, the Bombers were confident they could match it with anyone in the finals. Elliott said they had played several mini-finals in the hunt for a top three berth. “We had to keep winning to finish in the top
three,” he said. “We’ve played the top sides the last seven weeks, so we’ve had enough finals already. “We’re ready to go. We hold no fears.” Elliott said Riley Patterson and Matthew Panuccio were possible chances to return. The Bombers face Wallan in an elimination final on Sunday. In the other finals, Diggers Rest and Romsey will play off in the qualifying final on Saturday at Romsey Park. Diggers Rest sealed the minor premiership with a 31.22 (208)-3.4 (22) win against Lancefield. Rupertswood sealed third spot with a 58.20 (368)-1.1 (7) win against Rockbank. The Sharks had 16 goal kickers, led by Billy Cannolo who kicked 11 in a best on ground performance. The Sharks will play Macedon in the other elimination final. The Cats enter the finals on the back of a win against Woodend-Hesket, 16.10 (106)-8.6 (54).
Riddell saved its best for last to qualify for the Riddell District Netball League finals. Needing a win against fourth-placed Romsey, the Bombers stepped it up when needed. In a close game, the Bombers came away with a 51-48 win. Bombers’ coach Lauren Close said everything had come together at the right time. She said there were a nervous few moments waiting for the scores from the Rupertswood and Rockbank game. “We needed to win,” she said. “We’ve been working hard all season. It’s been an up and down season with people away and then me getting pregnant and not being able to play. “It was the first time in seven games that we had our whole team available.” Close said the game could easily have gone either way, with no more than four goals separating the two teams. She said both coaches thought their sides had played well. “It had me on the edge of my seat.” Close was full of praise for her sister Ellen Close, who has returned to the side in recent weeks after a holiday to Europe. Ellen Close shot 20 goals, while Tara O’Grady shot 31 goals. “Larrisa Rix did a great job and she’s still learning,” she said. “Ellen works so well with Tara. “She’s come back after five weeks working her way through Europe. “To come back and play as well as she did, is really good.” Kirby Elliott was again outstanding in defence. Lauren Close said Elliott had continued to develop. “She’s one person I’m happy to hand over my bib to,” she said. “She reads the play well and can play one-on-one, or float. She’s so dangerous in the goal keeper position.” The Bombers face Wallan in an elimination final on Sunday. “We’re putting it together at the right time,” Close said. High-flying Jets forced to settle for third in close match The Sunbury Jets’ reign as the top team of the BigV women’s state championship competition is over. After winning the past two state championship titles and three premierships in a row, the Jets have had to settle for finishing third this year. The Jets’ successful time ended on Saturday night at the hands of the Werribee Devils, losing 77-74. It was a match that could have gone either way, with eight points the biggest margin. In the end it came down to the dying seconds. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said it was a disappointing way to end the season. “I don’t think either team played particularly well,” he said. “For the spectators it would have been a good game to watch. “They hit some good shots and plays down the stretch.” Kereama said there were several areas where his side could have been better. He said they weren’t too bad defensively, but struggled offensively.

Jets soar to grand final By Tara Murray They needed three games to get there, but the Sunbury Jets are through to the Big V men’s division 1 grand final series. The Jets won game one last week against the Shepparton Gators and at half-time on Saturday night in game two, looked set to move through to the grand final. A poor third quarter proved costly, with the Jets eventually losing in overtime, 88-87. They didn’t make the same mistake on Sunday, winning 103-84, to take the series 2-1. Coach Ryan Addison said it was pretty exciting for the group to make it through to the grand final series. It’s the first time they’ve been in one since 2009, when they won the title. “The boys knew it was a while,” Addison said. “Our record over the last 10 years isn’t great. We’ve tried to change the culture, this is awesome.” Addison said a poor third quarter was the disappointing element in their loss in game two. He said they had spoken about it after the game. “We didn’t play great basketball,” he said. “Defensively we were really good, but we went away from what we were doing. “Speaking to the boys, we had our chances. “It was a really poor third quarter and if we played differently in the third, we didn’t need the extra game.” Ish Sanders was massive for the Jets with 42 points, having played the whole 45 minutes. It was no surprise it was Sanders who hit the shot to send the game into overtime in the dying seconds. “It was one of the toughest shots I’ve seen to tie a game,” Addison said. “He’s been big all year. He’s a great teammate and potent offensively. “We ran some screens for him and we knew it would be hard for him to get it, but he found the ball.” In game three, the Jets slowly built a lead throughout the game to run away to an easy win. Addison was happy with the performance. “Today we didn’t have the lapse,” he said. “We played some really good basketball. We did what we needed to and looked for different options. “We’ve now got another two weeks.” Sanders backed up his performance, scoring 33 points. Arthur Trousdell scored 20 points, while Kris Blicavs, Nathan Baker and Joel Jeffrey also scored doubled figures. The Jets face Warrandyte Venom in the best of three grand final series.

The Kangaroos had to fight hard against Moonee Valley on Saturday, winning 14.14 (98)-10.9 (69). Michael Spooner kicked three goals, while Matt Welsh was best on ground. With both sides already assured top two spots, the match was a preview of a finals match-up. The two sides will face each other this week, with a grand final spot on the line. Gisborne is back on the winners’ list in the Bendigo Football League. After one of their most disappointing performances, the Bulldogs were solid throughout against the Dragons, winning 15.8 (98)-7.11 (53). Pat McKenna kicked four goals for the Bulldogs. James Ferry and Nick Doolan were named the Bulldogs’ best. The Bulldogs sit third heading into the final round. Kyneton had a 19.15 (129)-6.9 (45) loss to Eaglehawk.

Gisborne lost its top of the table clash with Sandhurst in the Bendigo Netball League. After coming off a disappointing result the week before, the Bulldogs weren’t able to bounce back against Sandhurst, losing 55-43. The loss, the Bulldogs second in a row, means they now sit second a game behind Sandhurst. The Bulldogs face Golden Square in the final round. Kyneton, which won’t play finals, had a 58-37 loss to Eaglehawk.

It was a tough day for Sunbury United in FFV state league 3 north-west on Saturday. Having been in good form recently, Sunbury was confident against Strathmore, which was looking to seal promotion. Scores were locked at 0-0 at half-time, before Strathmore scored twice in the second half, winning 2-0. Sunbury sits eighth. In state league 4 west, Gisborne had a 4-1 loss to Bell Park.
