Dash through the snow The Macedon Ranges became a winter wonderland at the weekend. Families woke to blankets of snow covering their usually green grass on Saturday and Sunday morning, while children made the most out of the flurries, playing and building snowmen. The cold snap brought another dumping of snow on Sunday during the Riddell District Football Netball League junior finals at Woodend. As residents shivered through the wintry weekend, emergency services were out in full force. Cameron Drive, Barringo, Lions Head, and Mount Macedon roads in Mount Macedon were closed at the weekend due to low visibility and hazardous conditions. Macedon CFA captain Ross Luke said Sunday’s late rain washed most of the snow away by Monday morning, with most roads reopening for the start of the week. Last call for charity snags By Jessica Micallef After nearly 10 years of flipping hamburgers and turning sausages on Saturday mornings, Graham and Veronica Green have called it a day. The Greens, and fellow Sunbury resident Peter Ryan, have spent many a Saturday hosting sausage sizzles outside the Royal Hotel Sunbury. Mr Ryan is also hanging up the tongs – after 15 years. The weekly barbecues were all about raising money for Challenge, a charity that supports children with cancer. The trio estimate they have raised close to $400,000 for the charity. The Greens volunteered to take over from the previous barbecue chefs nearly 10 years ago.
Since then, they estimate they have cooked about 50 hamburgers, 13 kilograms of sausages and multiple bacon and egg sandwiches each week. Ms Green and Mr Ryan said getting to know the locals was rewarding. “All the children that came past were just amazing,” Ms Green said. “They were all well-mannered and polite. You hear lots of different funny stories.” Mr Ryan said: “It’s the people that you meet. You can hear their stories.” The Sunbury residents praised the community for its generosity and support. “People just gave donations when they didn’t want sausages. We’ve had a ball – it’s been a
wonderful experience,” Mr Green said. Challenge chief executive Dave Rogers said the Greens and Mr Ryan would be dearly missed. “Words are inadequate to express the appreciation,” he said. “10 years is a huge commitment. That type of individual generosity is fading. We have to look at how we can best continue that tradition. It’ll be sad to see it just wrapped up.” Mr Rogers said the money raised from the barbecues went towards providing families with accommodation at Challenge’s holiday homes. Big tick for ambulance response By Jessica Micallef Ambulance response times in the Macedon Ranges have improved by more than half a minute, according to the latest data. The latest quarterly performance data, for the period April to June, reveals ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies 34 seconds quicker on average than the same time last year. Ambulances arrived on average in 13 minutes – an improvement on the 13 minutes and 34 seconds of the previous year.
Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she was delighted with the work paramedics undertook, especially during the “busy” flu season. “The flu season has hit hard and early, but our nurses, doctors and paramedics in the Macedon Ranges have done an exceptional job rising to the challenge,” she said. For Hume, the data for April to June reveals ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies one second slower on average than the same time last year.

Ambulances arrived on average in 10 minutes and 38 seconds – up from the 10 minutes and 37 seconds. In the Macedon Ranges, ambulances responded to 525 Code 1 calls – up from 448. On average, 68.6 per cent of calls were responded
to in less than 15 minutes, an improvement on 65.2 per cent the previous year. In Hume, ambulances responded to 300 more Code 1 calls in April to June – up from 2810 in the previous year. More than 87.1 per cent of calls were responded to in less than 15 minutes in Hume, down from 87.7 per cent the same time last year. Across the state, 75,398 Code 1 calls were responded to in the quarter – 8525 more than in the same period last year.

Sunbury dancer takes giant leap open doors for her on her way to becoming a professional dancer. “Hopefully, it’ll open my career into the ballet world and into overseas dancing in a ballet company,” she said. “Overseas would be amazing to get the experience. “When I go over there, I want to be the strongest I can be.” The competition will be held between August 20 and 29. Paloma is no stranger to the dancing scene, having started at age two. She has danced at the Australian Ballet and Queensland Ballet Academy. Closer to home, she now dances at Shirley Rogers Academy of Dance in Sunbury. Paloma Hendry-Hodsdon is taking her dance talents to Canada. The Sunbury dancer will compete in the Genee International Ballet Competition 2019 in Toronto this month. Paloma, 17, said she was looking forward to dancing at an elite level. “It feels pretty unreal because it’s such an amazing competition,” she said. “Not many people are chosen because you need to get a specific mark, so I really can’t believe it. It’s the 99th year … so it’s an old competition.”
Woodend football, netball and cricket players have a new pavilion to enjoy. The new pavilion at the Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend, which features female and umpire changerooms, was funded through a $100,000 grant as part of the state government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund. The oval is home to the Woodend Hesket Hawks Football and Netball Club and the Woodend Cricket Club. Hawks coach Tom Carland said the pavilion had been two years in the making. “It’s been the talk of the club … we’re all really excited,” he said. “The government backed it quite heavily and put money into it.” Mr Carland is hoping the female-friendly changerooms will encourage more girls to take part in sport. “Clubs, especially at the junior end of it all, are trying to get a girls team up and running,” he said. “The more people we get doing sport, the better it is. “The amount of different varieties of sport that people can play, the more time they spend off computer games.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas opened the pavilion earlier this month. “We’re seeing growing numbers of girls and boys, women and men signing up to play sport at local clubs,” she said. “We want all Victorians to have access to high quality facilities regardless of where they live and or what gender they are.”

Daffodil Day’s big appeal Daffodil Day will soon be in full bloom across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. Sunbury resident Renee Allen knows first-hand the importance of the appeal, the Cancer Council’s annual fundraiser held each August. “My mum was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and we lost her four months later,” she said. “Every Daffodil Day I do one of the stalls where we fundraise.” Ms Allen, 24, is studying for a bachelor of nursing at La Trobe University and is hoping to
one day become an oncology nurse. “Looking after mum and watching the other nurses look after her made me want to get into the industry,” she said. This year, Cancer Council Victoria is hoping to raise more than $800,000 to help fund cancer research. Daffodil Day will be on Friday, August 23. Residents can support the cause at a number of stalls set up across the area or by visiting daffodilday.com.au
Young artists have the opportunity to share in cash prizes totalling $1250 at the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival Kyneton Rotary Youth Art Awards. Cheers to a Gisborne great By Jessica Micallef Meet Gisborne’s newest centenarian. Ellie Mann celebrated her 100th birthday at Gisborne Oaks Residential Aged Care earlier this month with her family and friends. “It doesn’t feel any different to any other day,” Ms Mann said. “But when you know it’s 100, you think how you reached this age. I never thought of it.” Born in Belfast on August 4, 1919, Ms Mann said she could remember her early life “vividly”. “That was just after the First World War in 1918 – the world was still recovering,” she said. Before moving to Australia in 1955, Ms Mann married Bill Chambers in 1940. Together, they raised two daughters Margaret and Marie. “We had two friends [including Agnes] at home [in Belfast] and they were farmers,” she said. “Agnes moved to Australia and she wrote such glowing letters about the weather – she told me all about the sunshine. Then she asked if we would like to come out. “We came out here and we settled up in Woodend, which I thought was a great big metropolis. I had no idea the size of Woodend. “The strange thing was I made friends a lot easier. I got to know all the people [and] we went to the church there. “I was homesick for my family but I was never homesick to get back. I was enjoying the sunshine so much here.” Ms Mann is the proud mother or two daughters, eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. “I’m very happy here.” Ms Mann’s philosophy to a long and happy life is having no milk and making the most of every day. “Tomorrow is a new day,” she said.

Milestone celebrated The Woodland Ladies Probus Club in Sunbury celebrated its 25th anniversary in style. Club president Val Jordan said the ladies attended a lunch at Barringo Food and Wine Company in New Gisborne last week to commemorate the milestone. “We had a little welcoming, we had our meal and we presented certificates to inaugural members, members who have been at the club for 20 years and members who have been here for 10 years,” she said. “It was lovely. “It was such a delight.” Ms Jordan has been at the club for two and a half years. She said her time at the club has been rewarding. “Probus was created to assist retired, mature-aged people to look for new interests. Our club has achieved that quite successfully,” she said. By Jessica Micallef A Gisborne great-grandmother hasn’t let diabetes get in the way of living her best life. Evelyn Dunstan was presented with the Kellion Victory Medal last month for her ability to live a healthy and full life with diabetes for six decades. Ms Dunstan was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] when she was 10-years-old. “I had been very sick for probably 12 months until I couldn’t go to school any more,” she said.
“I was with a GP for the latter part of the time. He would keep prescribing whatever and of course nothing worked.” Ms Dunston said the GP one day recommended Ms Dunston be taken to the childrens hospital immediately. “They drove me there and I lost consciousness … I probably wouldn’t have lasted another day. They popped an IV in straight away.” Ms Dunstan has since learned to manage her diabetes. “You carefully look at what you’re eating, that has to be according with your dose of insulin,”
she said. “I have at least five [doses] a day. I do constant blood tests – they are terrific. You go by what your blood tests say and your insulin intake. It’s very regimented. “Growing up at school I played sport, I did everything everybody else did.” Ms Dunstan is the proud mother of two sons, grandmother to five and great-grandmother to one. She credited her husband Rob and her late mother for helping her throughout the years. Ms Dunstan said it was an honour to be presented with the award. “I am very proud. To think I’ve had [it] for 60 years is amazing.”

The value of vintage What’s old will become new again at the upcoming Kyneton Vintage and Arts Festival. Now in its 23rd year, the three-day festival will take over the Kyneton Town Hall at the end of the month. The festival is the major fundraiser for the Friends of the Kyneton Museum. Event co-organiser Hanne Juul said there will be something for everyone on offer during the festival. “It’s always Kyneton’s biggest recycling event,” she said. “We will have lots of beautiful items like jewellery, there is a girl who will be doing haberdashery, and there’s a fellow from Lancefield who will be selling some beautiful furniture. “We have a lady who will be making beautiful native animals and birds out of pure wool felt – it’s all handcrafted.” A light lunch of baked goods and homemade
soups from the Rotary Club of Kyneton Country Kitchen will be provided on the Saturday and Sunday. All funds raised from the event will go towards conserving the collection and developing new projects at the Kyneton Museum. The festival’s opening night is on Friday, August 30 from 5-7.30pm. Gin win goes down well Mountain Distilling’s gin is pure liquid gold. The Macedon Ranges distillery has won a gold medal for its Mountain Gin at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. The gin scored 95 points during the judging process by a panel of international industry experts. Distillery co-founder Michael Harris said it was a humbling experience to be recognised at such a lofty international level. “Even if we took a bronze from the competition, we would have been absolutely stoked,” he said. “To get a gold medal, it just means our gin is in that calibre, which is pretty unreal.” Mr Harris said the secret to the success
of their winning gin was the use of local ingredients. “I think the thing that gave us a point of difference was the fact that we used locally foraged pine needles and the pepperberry botanicals,” he said. “It gives us a fresher, cleaner aroma. The mountain pepperberry is one of the native ingredients to Australia, along with lemon myrtle, which is also in our gin. The combination of all those with orange peel just gives it a really bright profile. “We’re always tinkering around with new recipes. Mountain [Distilling] will definitely be a distillery that will focus on doing things very innovatively.” Jessica Micallef

The Sunbury Kangaroos’ season came to a disappointing end in the Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division. Looking to at least match the achievements of last season when they made a preliminary final, the Kangaroos exited the finals in straight sets. It wasn’t the Kangaroos day, as they lost to Hillside 6.6 (42)-1.2 (8). Kangaroos captain Tylah Bell said the Sharks were the better team on the day. “Unfortunately the girls couldn’t get around the ball as much as they could,” she said. “They won all clearances in the midfield and they dominated from there. “Hillside were better everywhere. Around the ball, they had more run and carry and more numbers around the ball. “We weren’t there at the start and we weren’t there at the end.” Two goals with the breeze in the opening quarter gave the Sharks momentum.
The Kangaroos scored the only goal of the second quarter through Regina Said, but that would be the only goal of the day for the side. The third quarter would be the match-winning one – three goals to nil in favour of Hillside opened up a 27-point lead heading into the final break. The Sharks kicked the only goal of the last quarter to put the icing on the cake. Bell said things didn’t go right for the side at the pointy end of the season. Last year’s league best and fairest winner Bailee Said missed Saturday’s game with a knee injury, while Simone Craige got a call up to the VFLW. Bell copped a corked hip in the opening minutes of the game, and while she returned to the field she was restricted. It meant that different players had to step up to the challenge in the midfield. Bell said while those injuries hurt the side, it didn’t take away from the fact that Hillside was
Gisborne’s great victory By Tara Murray Gisborne pulled off one of the upsets of the FFV state league 4 west season, beating ladder leaders Altona North. Having lost just one game for the season, Altona North went in as favourites against the middle-of-the-table Sky Blues. But the Sky Blues put in their best performance of the season to come away with a 2-0 win. Sky Blues coach Danny Moore said the match, which was a catch-up game from earlier in the season, was a brilliant one for the club. “It’s a feel good factor,” he said. “It’s more than three points, it lifts the whole mindset across the club. “We can match up against the top team and beat them.” The game, which was scheduled for Gisborne’s Dixon Field, was moved during the week to City Vista Recreation Reserve. Moore said neither side had played at the ground before. “We knew early in the week that our ground was more than likely going to be unplayable. “The Caroline Springs facility is great and it was great to play there. “Sometimes it can be difficult playing on a synthetic surface and it didn’t necessarily suit our game.” Once the game started, the Sky Blues were focused on making sure they had a strong defence. Moore said they knew if they could do that, they would be in the game. “Altona North are on top of the table for a reason,” he said. “They are a good side and we knew it would be a huge challenge and we would be going in as underdogs. “The boys stepped up and everyone lifted and it was phenomenal.” Moore said both sides had some chances early on but weren’t able to score. The Sky Blues hit the lead late in the first half and that was doubled before half-time. Charles Eastwood and skipper Callan Haynes were the goalscorers. With the lead in hand, the Sky Blues didn’t go back into their shells. “In the second half it was important to continue what we did in the first half. “To stay strong in the backline and be positive,” Moore said. “We wanted to make sure we were defensively sound and we worked so hard on that. “It was pleasing as a coach.” Moore said the result was reward for effort for the work the group had put in during recent weeks.

He said they had been unlucky to come away empty-handed in those games. The Sky Blues sit eighth with four rounds remaining. This week they face Bell Park. Moore said they were hoping this win would give them momentum for the rest of the season. “It brings massive confidence for the whole group,” he said. “We can play and be competitive against the

top sides and beat them.” Sunbury United was also in action in a state league 3 north-west catch-up match. Sunbury was able to defeat Williamstown 2-1. Jayden Mercieca and Barisa Degal were the goalscorers for Sunbury. The win is Sunbury’s third in a row, moving them up to seventh.

Romsey takes the points in clash with Cats Romsey got a confidence-building win against Macedon heading into the Riddell District Netball League finals series. While the Redbacks had already sealed a finals spot, they were yet to beat a team above them. But that all changed on Saturday as they accounted for Macedon, 41-38. Redbacks coach Luke Marko Rawlings was thrilled with how the side played, especially in the second half. “We finally got them,” he said. “It was one of our goals this season to knock them off. There were good signs to see us take them on and still be in the fight even though we were down early. “We played through the pressure.” The Cats, who were without star goaler Chloe Wilson, led by five goals at quarter-time and pushed that to six goals at half-time. After the break, the Redbacks got back into the game, and pegged the margin back to two goals at three-quarter time. They were able to over-run the Cats in the final quarter. Marko Rawlings said their slow starts were something they had to work on. “It’s something that we need to break,” he said. “We need to be getting into the netball mindset quicker. The slow starts are evident and then we come home like a freight train.” He said he set players individual targets to hit in the last quarter, which they all achieved. He highlighted the work of Danni Jane Umaki in defence and Sally Portbury, in centre, as two who really stood up late. The result has Romsey sitting fourth heading into the final round. While it is still a chance to move into third, Marko Rawlings was expecting the side to finish fourth. “We look back at last year and, coming into finals, we hadn’t beaten four of the teams and we made the grand final.” The battle for the last finals spot will go down to the final round. Rockbank, who beat Melton Centrals, sits two points clear of Riddell. They face Rupertswood and Romsey respectively in the final round. Tara Murray

Sanders steps up as Jets take semi-final lead Ish Sanders took over in the final quarter to help the Sunbury Jets take a 1-0 lead against the Shepparton Gators in their Big V men’s division 1 semi-final series. With home court advantage in game one, the Jets were made to work hard for the win. They trailed by three points at quarter-time, before trailing by 10 points at half-time. The margin was back to one point at the final break. In a high-scoring final quarter, the Jets fired to run away with the 94-86 win. Jets coach Ryan Addison said it was big to get game one of the series, especially since they hadn’t beaten the Gators this season. He said they struggled a bit at both ends of the court in the first half. “We weren’t where we needed to be with our defensive rotations and we were missing some shots we would normally make,” he said. “Our defence could have been better.” Addison said they were able to switch on defensively in the third quarter, restricting the
Gators to 13 points. The ball then started dropping at the other end, with a massive 35 points in the final quarter. “We kept them to 13 points in the third quarter and that propelled us into the final quarter,” Addison said. “The last quarter was massive for us.” The star of the show in the last term was Sanders– he scored 33 points, 19 of those in the final quarter. “He didn’t struggle early on, but he wasn’t hitting his usual shots,” Addison said. “A couple fell in the fourth quarter. He steps up when needed. “He was outstanding and got us over the line.” Arthur Trousdell scored 20 points, while Nathan Baker and Kris Blicavs also scored double figures. Addison said the experience of Trousdell and Blicavs really showed through when needed. “Arthur shot well and it looked like every
shot he was going for was going in. “He stepped up and shot the three, which we haven’t seen for a few weeks. “Kris’ communication on defence was really good. They’ve both played a lot of basketball at a higher level.” The Jets are on the road for game two, and if needed game three. Addison said it will be a tough ask to come away with the series win and grab a spot in the grand final series. “I think we’re in a good spot,” he said. “Shepparton is a tough place to play and we’ve got two games to get into the next round. “We’ll look to get it done on the Saturday night.” Tara Murray

By Tara Murray The Sunbury Jets were left to rue a poor first half and now need to do it the hard way if they are to make the Big V women’s state championship grand final series. The Jets, who had claimed the minor premiership and the past two titles, didn’t look like the side that everyone has come to expect in Saturday’s semi-final against the Keilor Thunder. The Thunder made them pay, with an 80-74 win to claim the first spot in the grand final. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said they only had themselves to blame for the loss. The Jets trailed by 17 points at half-time after a poor first half. While they got back into the game in the second half, it was the first half that they would look back on. “Keilor were really good in the first half, so credit to them,” Kereama said. “We weren’t great and Keilor were great. You can’t afford to have a poor start. “We [Sunbury] had two different teams out there. The second half team was the team we expected to turn up.” Kereama said there was three areas which really hurt them in the first half. He said the Thunder shot really well, their defence was terrible and they didn’t execute well enough in offence. Despite the poor start, the Jets worked themselves into the game and the margin was three points within the last minute. The Thunder hit some crucial free throws to seal the win. Like their first half, Kereama said they didn’t execute well in the final minutes. “There was some really critical plays down the stretch,” he said. “It could have been the difference in us winning. “I don’t want to nit-pick the last couple of minutes … I thought we cost ourselves the game in the first half.” Courtney Duever top scored with 20 points, while Orla O’Reilly and Lynn Leaupepe also scored double figures. The Jets were without Chelsea Kereama, as she remains a week by week decision because of injury. Kereama said while they missed Chelsea’s leadership on Saturday night, they had enough talent and experience in the side to deal with her absence. He said that seeing a team celebrating beating them to get into a grand final might fire up the group. The Jets this week face the Werribee Devils in the preliminary final. The Devils had a massive win against Hume City Broncos, winning their semi-final 73-51. The Devils defence was in full force,
Sunbury Softball Association is wanting to get more females involved in the sport. The association is holding a three week introduction to softball program for females, leading into the softball season which starts in early October. The introduction sessions are for females from five years and older, with the three sessions running for an hour and half each on August 17, 24 and 31. Association vice-president Jo Dinsdale said the sessions were open for any females that want to try the sport, without the pressure of having to join a side. The association has T-ball, under-13s, under-16s, open men’s and women’s divisions, with all games played on Saturday’s at Sunbury. Top of the table Romsey kicked away in the second half against Macedon, winning 12.9 (81)-6.8 (44), to maintain its one game gap at the top of the ladder. A strong five goal to nil second quarter was the difference for Riddell against Wallan after it opened up a 33-point lead at the main break. It was an even second half, with the Bombers eventually winning 12.6 (78)-5.10 (40). The win leaves the Bombers sitting in third spot, one of three teams behind Romsey. Diggers Rest, which sits second, beat Woodend-Hesket, 13.9 (87)-5.7 (37). Melton Centrals and Broadford were the other winners against Rockbank and Lancefield respectively.
