Ewe need shelter, too Ewe are being encouraged to help sheep flock to shelter. Edgar’s Mission founder and director Pam Ahern is petitioning to enforce sheep shelter as a legal requirement in Australia. Ms Ahern said it was disappointing that not all Australians could see the conditions sheep had to endure. “Shelter doesn’t have to actually take the form of a physical structure like a shed, it can just be trees or shrubs,” she said. “Native grasses can form shelter for sheep as well. They might be more inclined to use that than a shelter. “People would be appalled if this happened to cats and dogs. But because these animals are sheep, they tend to be out of sight, out of mind – we feel that’s not good enough. “We pride ourselves on being an animal-loving nation.” Ms Ahern said the petition had been well received by the community. “It’s really shooting up,” she said. “We are getting a lot of support even some farmers have contacted me and said ‘good on you’. said. “I know that they [council] value that as well.” Council chief executive Margot Stork said council had a responsibility to ensure the area was safe and the environment was preserved. “No one has the right to build anything on land which is owned by anyone else without permission and that includes council-owned land,” she said. “While we understand some people might wish the hut to be retained, it is not a safe structure and it is not appropriate for this location.” Council officers visited the site after receiving complaints regarding the “illegal structure”. Officers found damage to the bushland, litter, tree removal and steps cut into the creek bank.

Lions kicking road safety goals The Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club is doing its bit for road safety. This season, the Ballarat Football League club has hired buses to transport its players and spectators to and from games in Ballarat. Club assistant secretary Brian O’Loughlin said it’s about “making sure people are safe and not driving over .05”. The club plays four games in Ballarat throughout the season – a 100-kilometre round trip for players and spectators. Buses have been provided for three of the games. The club has applied for a Towards Zero

Community Grant of up to $10,000 to be used to assist with the cost of hiring buses. “We have a lot of young people at the club,” Mr O’Loughlin said. “I suppose everyone’s experienced the tragedy of a loss of a life on the road and it’s a devastating thing. If we can do anything to reduce that, then it’s valuable to us. “The fact that the road toll is on the increase again is an issue for us all. We want to make sure we can do whatever we can. We are a community-based club, we are concerned about our community.” This weekend marks the Towards Zero round

in the Ballarat Football League. Mr O’Loughin said team captains would wear a zero on their jumpers while playing and the league would use scoreboards to promote the TAC message. “We’re using social media to promote their messages on Facebook. “We’re just hoping with all these things, we are making people safer,” he said. Thieves strike stores

School revamp hits top note in Woodend

By Jessica Micallef Stores in Sunbury’s Link Arcade have again come under attack. Thieves forced entry into three premises – Hidden Cafe, Nutbug and a hairdressing salon – about 4am last Thursday, smashing windows and stealing cash and goods. It’s the third time in three months stores in the arcade have been targeted. Hidden Cafe owner Martin Beamer said CCTV footage showed a male armed with a sledge hammer break into his store and steal a number of items. He believed there was also a female involved in the thefts.

“I looked at the CCTV footage. The male had a sledge hammer, that’s how he smashed the window and he came there for that purpose, to rob the premises,” Mr Beamer said. “They took two big jars of biscuits, soft drink out of the fridge, and two containers of milkshake toppings. Maybe they’re going to open a cafe.” He said the thieves also broke into surrounding shops. “Windows were smashed there, they entered and they took cash and other items. “The hairdresser was hit the most, they took a lot of stuff from there and … cash on the premises.” Mr Beamer said the vandalism was costing him hundreds of dollars to replace the damaged windows. He said the latest incident cost him a day’s business and $500 excess on his insurance. “We have no choice but to fix it,” he said. “We’ve yet to have the other one fixed from earlier this month. I am not going to do that yet until hopefully the vandal or vandals are caught.”

Mr Beamer said police visited the scene at 6.30am on Thursday but he was still dissatisfied with the police response. “It’s totally ridiculous,” he said. “There’s a population of nearly 40,000. There are four police in Sunbury, two on patrol and two at the station.” In May, according to business owners, a

group of young people were caught on camera firing marbles into store windows from the roofs of neighbouring buildings. Mr Beamer said he believed the thieves on Thursday were not the same people who have targeted the store in the past. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Sunbury police station on 9744 8111.

Woodend Primary School pupils are enjoying new music and gym facilities. The $2 million gym and music space was opened last week by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Premier Daniel Andrews. The project has converted the school’s multi-purpose hall into a gym with storage space and a new music facility with practice and meeting rooms. The upgrades include a refurbished hard court, stairs, decks and ramps and landscaping for the school’s outdoor spaces. Ms Thomas said she was delighted the pupils could prosper and learn in the new facilities. “Woodend Primary School is an outstanding local school … these upgrades will provide more space for music, physical activity, assemblies and community events,” she said. “This is a terrific result for students, families and teachers.” Mr Andrews welcomed the upgrades at the primary school. “Every student deserves modern school facilities and that’s what we have delivered for Woodend Primary School,” he said. “We are building schools so students and teachers have the best facilities and every chid is given every chance to succeed.” The upgrades are part of a $5.6 billion state government boost to deliver new schools, with more than 1400 school upgrades planned or completed. Transfer station closure

The Woodend transfer station will be closed intermittently until Friday, August 2 for safety reasons while work takes place. New sheds are being constructed at the transfer station in order to store electronic waste. The Kyneton transfer station will be opened on the days the Woodend facility is unavailable.

Errol calls Australia home By Jessica Micallef Errol Hunter is proud to call Australia home. The 75-year-old fulfilled a long-time wish when he became an Australian citizen last week at a ceremony at Bupa Aged Care in Kyneton. Born and raised in South Africa to a Swedish mother and a Scottish father, Mr Hunter left home to sail the seas at age 15. “I sailed all around the world,” he said. “I started as a junior and ended as a chief engineer on a ship. I travelled all over the world – England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Belgium, Germany and then later on Japan.

“I worked with the American Bureau of Shipping as an engineer for 35-odd years, which is why we lived in so many countries over the years. “I lived in Japan for a while and then lived mostly in Korea.” Mr Hunter first visited Australia on a holiday in 1994. He later moved to Sydney before relocating to Woodend with his family. “We came here for a better life,” he said. “I tried to get a citizenship a few years ago, when I retired in 2011. We started the process, but unfortunately I had a stroke and it fell off the list of things to do. But with help from my children, I am proud that I am an Australian citizen,” he said. Bupa Kyneton’s general manager Aida Salihovic said she was pleased the aged care home, where Mr Hunter is a resident, could host the ceremony.

“It is an accomplishment for Errol and has been a goal of his for quite some time and we feel extremely honoured to be there for him on the day,” she said. Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce attended the citizenship ceremony last

week and congratulated Mr Hunter on his achievement. “Becoming a citizen is a very happy and moving occasion for Mr Hunter and his family … I am really pleased to have been a part of the ceremony at Bupa Kyneton,” she said.

Council ward reform opposed Hume council has labelled a potential move to single councillor wards as leaving residents “without formal representation”. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek announced last month the state government’s intention to introduce the Local Government Bill 2019 into Parliament later this year, with six reforms proposed. The changes include single councillor wards, training of candidates prior to nomination and induction training for councillors prior to them being eligible for councillor allowances. Hume council has three multi-member wards, with three or four members in each. Hume corporate services director Daryl Whitfort said the council had benefited with multi-member wards. “Hume city council has experienced both single and multi-member ward structures since the local government area was formed in 1997,” he said. “Since the move away from single member wards, council has experienced an increasing level of whole of council strategic thinking, planning, representation and accountability to all ratepayers.” Mr Whitfort said the current multi-member ward structure provided residents greater “formal representation”. MY PLACE Karen Bleakley has written her first erotic novel Behind Closed Doors. She chats with Jessica Micallef about the novel and the potential for it becoming a movie. What is your connection to the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges?

I heard David Hughes talk about his bookclub, on Fox FM with his co-host, Kate Langbroek. Kate mentioned that Hughesy chose books that didn’t interest her – to me that was a sign. I simply sent him a copy and asked him to tell me what he thinks. I received a call three days later from his producer, and I was interviewed that night. I was incredibly pleased and completely satisfied with that one segment. I was invited in to … sign a number of copies. I knew I had to take this opportunity and run with it, so I’ve just asked them if they will host my official book launch. I receive emails and messages every other day, from readers, all telling me what a page-turner the book is.

I am a local to Sunbury, I attended Sunbury Secondary College. My mother, Marisa, is a bit of a local celebrity. My mum is known for her customer service in the town, being a big part of local businesses, including Fergusson Plarre and Jolly Miller. What are you passionate about? I’ve always been incredibly creative, no matter what I’ve done in my life. I’ve always thought outside the box and done things differently, including my book’s marketing. I’m passionate to drive the success of my first novel straight in to the hands of a movie producer. My novel will be a movie, the next big thing on everyone’s lips. Besides the book, I’m very passionate about my family and want to share any success with them.

A US movie producer has requested a copy of the novel – how did that all come about?

Tell me about your new book Behind Closed Doors. It has a Sex and The City vibe, a little Real Housewives drama and a lot more sex than 50 Shades of Grey Grey. It’s based on four women in their 40s. We learn about their different levels of friendship, their differences in personality, morals. As in life, when we face hurdles, or temptations, we lean on those closest to us and during these times some of us can fall apart. We see how each friendship copes when facades start to crumble and revelations come to light. I also wanted to empower women, sexually. Sex has been such a

taboo topic for such a long time, yet everyone is doing it. These women are strong women who know how to ask for what they want and know how to get what they need. What inspired you to write a novel? I have been writing since I was about six or seven-years-old. I started with a love for poetry. I found it both fascinating and a challenge to find words to rhyme, yet still make sense in the written format. As I got older, people would

I cannot believe what I have achieved on my own. It began less than three months ago when

I just happened to be having coffee, when a lady comes in. It was Anastasia from the show Gogglebox. When I told her about the book she asked if she could play a part in the movie. Twenty minutes later, she was on the phone to an Aussie producer, who lives in the US, pitching him the storyline of my book. What are your hopes for the novel now that it’s been publicised? There has to be a sequel, there are too many unanswered questions. I have also developed a game for lovers, just a little light-hearted way to spice it up. A book, the sequel, the game and of course the movie. I plan to trump the whole 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon, and I’m already 10 steps ahead.

“Interest rates agaIn” Please note that I am not a ﬁnancial adviser or an economist. What I write is an opinion only. Interest rates have gone down yet again and there are predictions that there may be a further reduction. SPORT Finals concern for Gisborne as injuries take their toll

Gisborne grinded out a tough win against South Bendigo in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday. With injuries leaving them short on the bench, the Bulldogs fought the game out to the end, saving their best to last. While leading all day, the score didn’t blow out until late, with the Bulldogs winning 20.14 (134)-9.9 (63). Bulldogs playing coach Clinton Young said it was a tough game where they had to work hard to get the win, despite leading by 30 points for most of the game. “It was a competitive game,” he said. “There was a bit of rain on Friday, it was a bit muddy. “I’m proud of how we fought it out. We didn’t play our best. We only had one rotation in the final quarter. We had to grind it out.” Ethan Minns starred in the midfield with Young saying he was getting better and

better each week. Tim Walsh was the usual general down back for the Bulldogs, while Pat McKenna kicked six to take his season total to 67 goals. Thomas Wood kicked four goals in his first senior game since June 1. Young said they were still waiting to find out the severity of the injuries. Casey Summerfield and James Ferry both suffered groin injuries, while Matthew Cassidy suffered concussion. “We’ve had four to six changes every week for the last month,” Young said. “Hopefully we can get a more stable team and finish off the season.” He said it was nice to bounce back after losing to ladder-leaders Strathfieldsaye. He said they learned some lessons after being within distance of the Storm for most of the game. The Bulldogs remain in second spot but the

Bulldogs take control By Tara Murray Gisborne survived a scare against South Bendigo, but was able to settle and come away with the win in the Bendigo Netball League. It was a good test for the ladder-leading Bulldogs against a South Bendigo side looking to play finals. After both teams had periods of dominance, it was the Bulldogs that came away with the 52-48 win. Bulldogs captain Maddy Stewart said they always knew it was going to be a test. “It was a hard-fought win,” she said. “We knew it was going to be tough, they are improving as the season goes along. “It was a hard slog. We pushed it out at one stage and they got in front later on. “It was good to put the foot down and steady and take control.” Needing to change things up, the Bulldogs made a couple of key moves. The big one was moving Ella Bertacchini from goal attack to defence. Tazma Morris, who was up from the A-reserve side, came into goal attack. “It made a lot more drive in the goal circle,” Stewart said. “And it flowed onto the attacking end. “We were missing Holly Doricic, so Tazma came on and gave movement in goal attack. “Ella gave us something different in defence with her height.” Stewart said the move of Bertacchini, who is a shooter at Victorian Netball League level, into defence was something they hadn’t tried until the past few weeks. She said it was something they had up their sleeves for finals if they needed it. As well as missing Doricic, defenders Mel Harris and Keara Fitzgerald missed the game, giving the Bulldogs a younger side than usual. Stewart said it was really pleasing to see the composure of the younger players who were able to stand up under pressure. Stewart said those absences and others throughout the season, had given the team some more flexibility. “We have shown the depth we’ve got in other grades,” she said. “There’s the opportunity to be more flexible and change up positions. “We’re showing we have those different options.” The Bulldogs, who have lost just one game this season, remain in top spot, a game clear of Sandhurst. United claims the points against Vikings Sunbury United got reward for effort, coming away with all three points against Sebastopol Vikings in FFV state league 3 north-west. Travelling to Ballarat, Sunbury controlled most of the match to win 4-1. Sunbury vice-president Greg Czapnik said the scoreline was reflective of the match. “We always travel well up there,” he said. “It was pretty dominant as far as the scoreline goes and could have been more. “It was a solid display apart from about 20 minutes when we lost shape.” Sunbury started the better of the two teams and scored first, before the Vikings upped their game. They were unlucky not to score, with a goal disallowed and Mark Lewis making a good save. The score was 1-0 at half-time. Sunbury made it 2-0 before the Vikings reduced it to 2-1. Sunbury responded straight away. A Lewis save kept the margin at 3-1 before Sunbury scored a fourth late. Jayden Mercieca scored a hat-trick. Mercieca has scored six goals in four games since returning to the club from Lalor United. Czapnik said it was good to have Mercieca back. “He has scored five goals in the last two weeks,” Czapnik said. “He’s showed what he is capable of doing. He knows how to find the goals. “His mates were still at Sunbury and he was in and out of the Lalor starting line-up. “I think it was an easy decision to come back.” The win has United sitting in 10th spot, with a game in hand. United would have been sitting in the top six had it not been stripped 10 points earlier in the season for playing an ineligible player. Czapnik said they were still fighting that decision. Sunbury BMX riders tune up with a winter workout Sunbury BMX club riders are continuing to enjoy the thrill of racing during the off-season. They joined competitors from the Bendigo and Ballarat Sebastopol clubs in the first Winter Triple Challenge, with the final event which was held in Sunbury on Saturday. Overall titles were awarded for the best junior and senior riders and the top club, with age group champions also recognised. Sunbury’s Josh Bettany said it was good preparation for the riders ahead of some big events. “Traditional dirt tracks become difficult to maintain and boggy in the wet,” he said. “Sunbury BMX Club riders, however, are keen to keep their skills and fitness up in readiness for the first state open race meet to be held in August. “We saw the quiet winter period as an opportunity to hold a tri-series with two other local clubs that are currently rebuilding their club’s membership base and infrastructure.” Though Sunbury, which is the third biggest BMX club in Australia, finished the series third, the experience gained was seen as invaluable.

For many Sunbury riders it was their first ever event against other clubs. Bendigo won the overall contest with 12.5 points, while Ballarat Sebastopol finished on 12 points and Sunbury on 11.7 points. The three clubs were surprised by the high level of attendance and interest in the events, with riders from across the state also entering. Ballarat Sebastopol’s Sienna Richmond and Hunter Simmonds were the joint winners of the overall junior riders of the series, while Bendigo’s Adam Aherne was the senior winner. More than 100 riders competed in at least two events to qualify for the overall rider of the series awards, including 39 from Sunbury. The Sunbury riders recorded some good results. In the Superclass event, Sunbury claimed the top four positions with Rob Slatter winning. He overtook Damon Hocking in the final round. Michael Ellul and Luca Weber finished third and fourth respectively. Ben Ackerman won the 17-24 men’s age group, Mia Fiest (nine girls), Hamish Monaghan (10

Macedon on the ropes By Tara Murray Macedon has a lot of work to do if it’s to be a premiership contender, according to coach Ben Tankard. While the Cats are all but assured a finals berth in the Riddell District Football League, Tankard said the gap between them and top sides is a big one. “We’re pretty comfortable that we will play finals,” he said. “We’ve conceded the highest that we’ll get to is fourth, but we’ll more likely finish fifth or sixth. “I think Diggers, Riddell and even Rupertswood are starting to play better football as the season goes on and we’re possibly not. “Right now, I don’t think we’re a finals contender.” Tankard said despite their current struggles, he wasn’t writing off the side. He said when they play their best football

they can match it with anyone. “We think our best is good enough, but we’re going to have to get to work. “I do believe in our guys. We have to find a way … whether it’s on the training track, or we break things up.” On Saturday, the Cats were given an eye-opener against a red hot Diggers Rest. The game was over in the first quarter as the Burras reminded everyone why they will be in the mix for the premiership. While the Cats mounted a mini-comeback in the third quarter, the Burras responded in the last, winning 17.7 (109)-7.9 (51). Tankard said they were completely outclassed. “I reckon the game was over 10-15 minutes into the first quarter,” he said. “They really had us, they used the ball really well. We made a lot of easy mistakes and every time we made a mistake they went forward and punished us and marked and goaled.

“That was the most impressive Riddell District Football League side I’ve seen in my two years. “I think we ran into a red hot side and for me they are the red hot favourites to win the premiership.” Tankard said they were beaten in the midfield which put the pressure back onto their defenders. While he was pleased with how the side responded in the third quarter, he said it was a disappointing game all round. “At half-time, we probably thought the game was gone, but we needed to restore some pride. “We changed a few things and we got a little bit of momentum, but we didn’t get any reward for that momentum.” The Cats this week face Rockbank, they then face Romsey in a must-win game. Romsey, Woodend-Hesket and Rupertswood were the other winners at the weekend.

The Sunbury Jets sealed top spot and the week off with a big win in the final round of the Big V women’s state championship season. Looking for their fourth straight title and third straight state championship title, the Jets are starting to hit form at the right time. On Saturday night, the Jets had no issues against McKinnon Cougars. The Jets started well. The first quarter was their best. They were able to build the lead to 26 points at the last change. While the Cougars won the final quarter, the Jets had done enough to win, 94-73. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said it was nice to finish the regular season on a high. “Form is important heading into finals. “It was a good result to go into finals focused and full of confidence. “A lot of challenges will be thrown at us.” The nature of the win meant all Jets players who suited up got court time. Lynn Leaupepe (21 points) and Jacinta Beckley (23 points) came off the bench and provided much needed scoring power. Kereama said to be able to rotate his whole squad this late in the season would help them come finals. “Depth is our strength and we’ve worked hard to use the entire roster and stay fresh. “We were lucky in that sense to have the ability to do that as finals get closer. “We want to keep games at a high tempo and hope they will be fresh. “Lynn and Jacinta’s efforts were tremendous. We’ve got a lot of experienced players and on any given night they’re not worried who gets the points.” After having players in and out of the side in recent weeks, the Jets are just about at full strength. Chelsea Burns, who has a hamstring issue, has been managed in recent weeks, but should be fine for finals. The Jets will play either Werribee Devils or Keilor Thunder.
