you know where it is, the car keys are there if anyone needs it.’ “I had come around the corner and I hit a tree. I can’t remember anything after that, other than what Kade’s told me.” Kade, 13, drove up to his dad to see him lying on the ground. “I saw dad on the ground, I got next to him and rolled him over and got his phone out of his bag,” he said. “I took his bum bag off so he could lay flat and I called triple zero.

“I wasn’t panicking, but … I didn’t know what was going to happen. “I had to go on Google Maps and read out the latitude and longitude and describe what it looked like on Google Maps.” Mr Anderson said it was difficult for Kade to explain on the phone the exact the location he and his dad were in. “He follows me so he doesn’t know where we are going,” he said. “I knew where we were but I was unconscious and coming in and out of consciousness and not aware of even what had happened. “I had blood coming out my nose and I was not in a great state for your kid to see, but he held himself pretty well, even on the phone call.”

Eventually, a nearby motorbike rider found the pair and drove them to the main road to where an ambulance was waiting. He said it was extremely important for parents to teach their children what triple zero was and how to make the call. “We’re humans just like they are and we’re not as resilient as we think we are, even though we think we are pretty bulletproof,” he said. “I should’ve been the one that was making the call and looking after him but the tables turned pretty quickly. “Kade’s always been a mature kid. It was a real proud moment to think he was getting recognition for some pretty amazing thing because as a parent, you don’t know how to thank them enough.” 12422226-SN29-19 10070720-19

Not all heroes wear capes – but Kade Anderson is definitely a hero in his dad’s eyes. Gisborne resident Kade was presented with a Junior Triple Zero Hero award at Parliament House last month, for dialing triple zero after his dad, Grant Anderson was in a motorbike accident earlier this year. Mr Anderson said he and his son were out for a motorbike ride in Ashbourne, on a track he had rode on many times before. “It was a track that Kade was not familiar with,” he said. “We’ve always had a bit of a plan. We don’t make a big deal out of it, but I always say ‘the phone’s in my backpack and if you need it

Businessman backs park timing By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury resident and business owner wants carparks in Sunbury “restricted” to less than two hours. Sunbury Laundrette owner Alan Fraser was responding to an anonymous business owner’s response to Hume council switching five all-day parking spaces to two-hour parking in the Barkly Street off-street carpark. In June, an anonymous business owner told Star Weekly he wanted business people issued with parking permits so they can park all day

in time-based parking spots. Mr Fraser said the business owner’s idea to issue long-term parking permits was “absolutely retrograde”. “Why don’t we get all the traders to park their car in O’Shanassy Street – where would the people come from?” he said. “It’s going backwards.

“It’s just madness to think the business owner would want to park their car or their cars in the front of their shops and make customers walk even further.” Mr Fraser said restricting parks to less than two hours would allow more customers to come into local businesses. “Can you imagine how many free carparks there are going to be for people instead of having to drive around endlessly looking for a park because those carparks are going to be turned over like no tomorrow?” he said. “It’s all about the shopping experience.”

Mr Fraser said there had been many times his customers had to park away from his launderette because parking was limited. “I have many people who have mobility issues and have mobility devices to get to my launderette,” he said. “There are three ladies in particular, and the struggles to get to my place are there. “Every one of those carparks was taken up when those ladies were there. “The quicker we move to 10 and 15 minute car parking, the better off every single business in the town is going to be.”

CWA’s family appeal “This particular funding will assist with the upgrading of heating and furnishing for the units,” Ms Millar said. “The fact that it has been out of action for two years does indicate that there was a gap in the service levels that they were able to provide. “Hospitals have huge budgets coming from government funding but there are also many things that fall between the cracks. “This is just one little thing which can support those families at a time of the greatest need. “We were able to give more than originally thought through the success of our fundraising.” Jessica Micallef Group president Amanda Millar with Karalene Habib from The Royal Women’s Hospital. Macedon Ranges women have lent a helping hand. The Country Women’s Association Central Highlands Group donated $5500 to the Royal Women’s Hospital. Group president Amanda Millar said the money would be used to upgrade the family accommodation unit at the hospital. “This is used primarily by families from regional locations who have a family member who is receiving treatment at the Royal Women’s Hospital,” she said. “When family members want to accompany the person receiving the treatment, they can stay at the accommodation. “That includes having children, partners or other relatives stay with the person to support them while they are receiving the treatment.” The accommodation at the hospital has not been used for years as it was classified as being “below standard”.

Kirsty Ciantar is showing off her new look. The Sunbury resident cut off her hair last month and donated it to children’s charity Variety. Ms Ciantar, 25, said her five-year-old daughter Izzy was one of her inspirations, along with her grandmother Rose Ciantar, to embrace shorter hair. “Izzy’s got a cancer condition where she’ll get cancer multiple times,” she said. “It’s a genetic disorder called bloom syndrome, so her genes are really fragile … they can mutate at anytime and turn into cancer. “I just want to teach her it’s just hair and it’s not a big deal. “But then nana went through cancer first

and she’s just as important to me. Nana’s the heart of the family so without nana we don’t know what we’d do.” Rose said her granddaughter’s gesture was a beautiful touch. “Even just talking about it makes me cry,” she said. “I’m so proud of her – she’s done a great job.” Ms Ciantar wanted to go further and raise money for the same charity. “I wasn’t planning on raising money, but I thought I may as well – I’m donating my hair, if people want to donate to the cause, there’s no harm in it,” she said. Damian’s dry days ahead By Jessica Micallef Damian Bishop is an inspiration to us all. The Riddells Creek resident is participating in Dry July, a fundraising initiative that raises money for cancer support organisations, for the fourth year in a row. Mr Bishop said he wanted to participate in the annual event to give back to families that have been affected by cancer. “I have known a lot of family members and friends that have cancer and passed,” he said.

‘‘

Doing Dry July is kind of for me as well as everybody else - Damian Bishop

’’

“It would be these days we all know someone that’s had the big C or have got it, whereas years ago it seemed to be the other way around – it was rarer.” But this year’s event holds a special place in Mr Bishop’s heart. “About six weeks ago, I was in the back paddock going out to feed some farm animals and I had bread in my arms and fell face first into a rock,” he said. “It hurt – one of the worst falls I had ever had. I think I was out for a little while but being a guy that I am, I just thought I would be all right. “The next day, I had a shower and instead of it being 15 minutes it was a three-hour shower – I fell asleep in the shower. “I went to hospital and did scans and doctors found a tumor and it was very large. They believed it was benign. It was starting to affect my vision, hearing, sight, balance. “So this year, doing Dry July, it’s kind of for

me as well as everyone else because I thought I was unbreakable but I realised I’m just as vulnerable as everyone else. “I’ve always been fit, looked after myself reasonably well and it just seems to be able to affect whoever it wants whenever it wants.” Mr Bishop has undergone surgery to remove the benign tumor. While he recovers, he hopes

Sacred Heart College Kyneton

to raise $5500 for the Olivia Newtown-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre. “There’s no time like today, yesterday is too late,” he said. “Even on a bad day, find a way to smile because you’re still here, you’ve still got family and friends.” To donate: bit.ly/2xkn0Rz

Council targets glass recycling in new plan Macedon Ranges council is about to start a glass recycling trial in Lancefield. About 800 properties in the area will participate in the trial which will begin in August and will run for six months. After the trial is complete, the council will consider if it can offer an ongoing glass recycling collection service in the Macedon Ranges. Acting assets and operations director Anne-Louise Linder said while glass was already being recycled by residents, the glass often became broken and mixed with other recyclables. “When glass is broken and embedded in cardboard and paper, it is difficult to extract and recycle,” she said. “Glass is a valuable resource and by improving the amount retrieved, council can ensure more is recycled and reused. “The separated glass material can also be used for manufacture of new glass containers. “The change also has a positive impact for other recyclables such as cardboard or paper, as it has higher market value when free of embedded glass.” Households in the trial area will receive a separate 140-litre bin and information regarding the trial. The trial is free and an information session on the trial will be held on July 21 at 10am at Lancefield Park, Chauncey Street. Jessica Micallef

Students dial up change By Sismita Sasmita Sarpudin Representatives from Gisborne Secondary College successfully passed a Bill on mobile phone management strategy at the 2019 YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament. Jessica Storace, Marlow Choi-Hatcher, Laura Tyack, Indiana Wales, Matthew Antoniou and Shaylah Lockett debated that students should have the right to access mobile phones during school hours for learning purposes and should be taught how to use the device responsibly through cyber safety training. The tabled Bill included a recommendation

for schools to integrate their learning process with mobile phones by introducing online educational resources. “I believe it is best to address the potential mobile phones may have on the learning of all students and to embrace it,” Ms Storace said during the debate. Education Minister James Merlino announced on June 25 a Bill banning the use of mobile phones in primary and secondary public schools during school hours. The minister cited distraction and cyberbullying as the reasons behind the Bill, which will be effective from 2020. The

Gisborne students argued instead of ignoring problems surrounding the usage of mobile phones, schools educate students around the technology. YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament is a program giving young people between the ages 16-25 a chance to be heard at the highest level of state government. Established in 1987, over 20 Youth Parliament Bills have gone onto become Victorian legislation, significantly impacting the community. The YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament was held from July 1-4.

Everyone has a crazy bike story to share. Macedon volunteer group Wilkinson’s Wheels is working on a documentary called My Crazy Bike Story to get people pumped about their bikes. Wilkinson’s Wheels co-founder Phil Wilkinson said the project was a way for people to have a wheelin’ good time and share their “crazy bike adventure”. “We’ve got a young lad, Ben Langenburg, he’s passionate about mountain bikes but he’s also a really passionate film producer so we said how can we help you help us tell our story and to give you some experience and he’s just like cool, let’s do this,” he said. “We’ve managed to get Shane Jacobson to contribute a bit of his time to provide some mentorship to Ben.” “When we pick bikes up, people tell us about their adventures on bikes and again it’s just this really amazing thing.” To be a part of the documentary, visit: bit.ly/2Xp7xKy Jessica Micallef

SPORT Jets power away in second half to beat the Devils The Sunbury Jets stepped up on Saturday night to beat the Werribee Devils in their Big V women’s state championship match. In a top-of-the-table clash, the Jets showed another level in the second half to run away with a big win. After an up and down first half, with the Jets trailing by one point at half-time, the Jets outscored the Devils by 26 points in the second half, to win 90-65. Acting Jets coach Sharon Plichta said she was happy to come away with any win, let alone a 25 point win. “It was a fantastic win, the girls really came together,” she said. “It made my job easier.” The Jets made a focus of getting off to a good start and they did exactly that, leading by nine points at quarter time. The Devils responded in the second quarter, to take the lead at the main break.

“Werribee’s first quarters have been good, so we knew we had to be on our best game,” she said. “They hit back in the second quarter, going in even at half-time. “We came out and set the tone in the second half and Werribee couldn’t keep up.” The win came despite Courtney Duever missing the match while back home in America and Josie Stockill limited through illness. Coach Kennedy Kereama missed the game with his Victorian commitments at the under-16 national championships. Plichta said one of the strengths of the squad was that they had a lot of depth. “We’re lucky that we have a team that anyone cane step up, at any stage,” she said. “We’ve got quite a few scorers. Lynn came off the bench and scored 27 points.” Jacinta Beckley scored 21 points in her best performance of the season.

Plichta said she put it on Beckley to take her opportunities when it arose. “Without almost two girls, I really put it on her to step up. “This was her opportunity.” The win moves the Jets to equal top with the Devils, on 12 wins. The Jets are ahead on the season head-to-head record. Plichta said not only did the win give the side confidence, it was important in the context of their season and hopefully getting a home final. The Jets this week face Southern Peninsula, with Plichta again taking the reins. Plichta said it was a side they had to watch out for. “They have some young kids,” she said. “They beat Warranmbool by nearly 100 points. They had a couple of young girls score 30-40 points and that doesn’t happen often. Tara Murray

Bombers are flying high By Tara Murray Riddell played some strong football as it overcame Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Coming into the game on the back of a five game winning streak, the Bombers continued that good form on Saturday. After a close first half on the scoreboard, the Bombers found another level in the second, to win 14.11 (95)-10.13 (73). Bombers co-coach Jamie Elliott said they played some really good football against a good team. “Playing Diggers at Diggers and getting the win, they don’t lose too many there,” he said. “I thought we controlled the game to be honest. They kept coming back and they are a good side. “We were able to kick some goals late.” Elliott said Jimmy Nolan was their best in the ruck, making it easy for the small brigade in the middle. Dylan Tarczon (three goals), and youngsters Jordan and Jesse Taylor were the other standouts. “We had 22 good contributors which was the pleasing thing. “We thought we had selected 22 players who would have a real go.” Elliott said the pleasing thing was they were able to continue the form they had built up in recent weeks. This was the Bombers first match against a top six side since their loss to Rupertswood in round seven. Elliott said they had tinkered with their game style a bit this season and it had taken some time to work out. “We changed the game style a bit, we did a whole 180,” he said. “We tinkered it at the start of the season and then tinkered with it in the first three or four rounds. “We’ve now come up with something that we’re happy with.” The win came with the side missing both their captains. Elliott said they were continuing to back the young guys in. “The younger guys like Tommy Alkemade, Matty Panuccio [three goals on the weekend] and Nathan Croft … They’ve all played a lot of senior football. We’re expecting them to be cherry ripe now.” The weekend’s match was the first in a tough run home. They face all the other teams in the top six, including Romsey twice, to finish the season. Currently, just one game separates the top six sides. The Bombers sit second, percentage ahead of four teams. 14 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 9, 2019

Riddell’s Tom Cassidy tries to get away from Deven Costigan. (Mark Wilson)

Elliott said they would get a good indication of where they sit over the coming weeks as the race for the finals heats up. “We’ve got to keep on winning to finish as high as possible,” he said. “We all want to finish in the top three.” In other results, Woodend-Hesket got a vital win against Melton Centrals, 14.10 (94)-

9.14 (68). Rupertswood beat Broadford, 19.17 (131)-8.3 (51), while Wallan beat Rockbank 60.18 (378)-3.5 (23). Matthew Perri kicked 21 goals for the Magpies in their win. He now leads the league goal kicking with 65 goals for the season.

Tigers remain united despite tough season Sunbury United Tigers have a tough ask ahead of them if they are to make the NRL Vic first grade finals this year. The Tigers sit sixth, three points outside the top four at the mid-point of the season. Tigers president Tony Gould said they knew it was going to be a much tougher ask this season, after playing in the grand final last year. “The senior side is a different team make-up this year,” he said. “We’ve got a few in the army who are overseas and some who have moved interstate. “We have a number of new players. We knew it would be a lot harder this season.” Gould said they would have to win five out of their last seven games if they were to play finals. He said pre-season they hadn’t focused on finishing in the top four, more about building the side together. All sides had the bye on the weekend, which had come at a good time for the club to allow everyone to recharge their batteries. He said a drop off in numbers in their reserves had also hurt them and had been a bit unexpected. That side is currently last on the ladder. He said they were hoping some of their under-18s would step up and help them out for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, the Tigers junior program continues to thrive. Their under-18s just won a premiership, while their under-17 team is about to start their season. The club has long had success with junior sides making grand finals This year they have 16 juniors in the Melbourne Storm Thunderbolts program, in a massive boost for the club. Gould said he thought that was the most players selected from the club in one year to be part of the program. “The skill level is high especially in the older age groups. Our under-14s are going exceptionally well, they are coached by a former first grade coach.” Next week, Melbourne Storm player Justin Olam will visit the club, as part of Storm at your club.
