Marble menace strikes By Jessica Micallef Vandals have been caught on camera “firing marbles from slingshots” at stores in Sunbury’s Link Arcade. According to business owners, a group of young people has been caught on camera firing marbles into store windows from the roofs of neighbouring buildings. Hidden Cafe was one of the Link Arcade stores targeted. Owner Martin Beamer said the vandalism was distressing. “There have been a lot of windows damaged by vandals … we are sick of it,” he said. “My business, Hidden Cafe, has had a front window damaged by a marble fired by a slingshot … it will cost $3000 to replace and I have to pay $500 excess,” he said.

“Windows were damaged opposite our cafe, to the physio and medical building. There are CCTV cameras in the street where this has happened going directly to Sunbury police station. “We know we have to replace windows, but it costs more money from our pockets and it’s very frustrating.” Mr Beamer said he was dissatisfied with the police response. “There are not enough police in Sunbury, as we all know,” he said. “It really disappoints me that there are no police in Sunbury – they don’t seem interested.” Mr Beamer said he had taken matters into his own hands by installing security cameras at his cafe. According to one store owner in Link Arcade, the vandalism in the area had been occurring for about six weeks. “It’s been happening for a while,” they said. “They are up on the roofs, and they are firing marbles from slingshots. “It’s only a matter of time before they hit someone in the eye.” Sunbury Acting Sergeant Matt Schappacher said there had been four separate shop vandalism incidents reported in Sunbury dating back to January 21. It is believed police have identified a suspect. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Sunbury police station on 9744 8111.

Forget Albert Einstein – Lolly the chicken is the new Macedon Ranges mathematician. Edgar’s Mission communications officer Paula Jewell said Lolly was one of 15,000 hens facing depopulation after a free range egg farm went bankrupt in 2016. “We headed down there … it was a matter of grabbing all the hens we could. “We saved around 400 … and Lolly was one of them.” In two years, Lolly has become a firm favourite with staff and visitors to the animal farm and she’s shown she’s got talent. “She actually has learnt to count,” Ms Jewell said. “I say a number and she pecks a badge that number of times. “We train them … the same as you train a dog or any other animal – clicker training. “What I am learning is they have so many more abilities that even I realised. “If Lolly could speak, I’m sure she’d tell people that the next time someone calls them a bird brain, just say ‘thank you’ – it could be the greatest compliment they’ve ever received.” Lolly and her counting ability were star attractions at the farm’s recent 16th anniversary celebrations.

Labor promises sports funding By Jessica Micallef Sunbury Recreation Reserve players and members can look forward to new amenities if a Labor government is elected on Saturday. Labor is promising to deliver $90,000 towards upgrading lighting at the reserve’s netball court and providing air-conditioning in the indoor stadium. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell was at the reserve last Wednesday to make the announcement. He said the investment would help the reserve provide clubs with important facilities.
“Not only will this investment improve our community infrastructure and promote a more active lifestyle, these clubs are grassroots organisations that help bring our community together,” he said. “Projects like this help build our community. “I am proud to have advocated and secured funding for better facilities and spaces that everyone will be able to use and enjoy.”
The lighting upgrade is expected to allow for an expanded competition in Sunbury. The Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club extended to 26 teams last year, including both male an
female teams. Tenants of the stadium include the Sunbury and District Table Tennis Association, which operates 12 tables and provides year-round competition for players of all ages and abilities. Opposition sports spokesman senator Don
Farrell said investing in sport venues was crucial to encourage people to exercise. “Whether they dream of playing in the AFL, AFLW or super netball, or just want to enjoy the health benefits of physical activity and social bonds that come with being part of a community sporting club, we want to give all Australians the chance to enjoy sport,” he said. “Our investments in local sporting facilities like these help clubs and communities build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.”
Paw vision fundraiser The Petbarn Foundation and Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs have partnered to assist people who are blind or have low vision. The Petbarn Sunbury store is accepting donations for Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, to help raise more than $600,000 to cover the costs of breeding, training, caring for puppies and matching Seeing Eye dogs to as many people as possible. Store manager Rikki-Lee Douglas is encouraging the community to dig deep for the special cause. “We are so excited to be supporting Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs again this year,” she said. “For the right person, the highly trained dogs allow Australians who are blind or have low vision to travel independently and navigate obstacles in a quicker and more efficient manner than they otherwise can with other mobility aides such as a white cane.

Wanted man
Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate 40-year-old man Damien Ratcliffe. A warrant was issued last Thursday for his arrest in relation to court order matters. Ratcliffe is known to frequent Gisborne, Melton and Bacchus Marsh. He is about 180cm tall, caucasian in appearance and has a medium build and short brown hair. Day care celebrated Our Village Family Childcare children and educators in Sunbury celebrated National Family Day Care Week with a picnic. Childcare co-ordinator Sue Damiano said seven educators and more than 20 children gathered at Galaxy Land Jackson Park to enjoy the picnic and live music. “It was a great day, a little freezing though,” she said. “The children had a great time with the music … and playing on the equipment.” Ms Damiano said that while the event was a chance for the children and their day carers to have some fun, it also acknowledged day care’s contributions. “It’s really important to recognise the service in the community,” she said. The Sunbury family day care service was
one of many childcare centres that celebrated National Family Day Care Week. Family Day Care Australia chief executive Andrew Paterson said the work day care services provided for children were important to their development. “Celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of family day care is at the heart of National Family Day Care Week and at the heart of family day care itself,” he said. “The ability for family day care educators to provide one-on-one attention in a natural home environment is something that cannot be replicated in other early childhood education care settings.” Jessica Micallef

Bike trail pledge
A federal Labor government has promised to invest $5 million in a bike trail from Daylesford to Hanging Rock if the party is elected. The trail will pass through Daylesford, Musk, Bullarto, Lyonville, Trentham, Carlsruhe and Woodend. The project has been identified by the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn councils as a priority. Event gaining traction Get ready to start your engines at the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Rally and Tractor Pull. More than 1500 people are expected to attend the annual event at Gisborne Steam Park. Organiser Arthur Boyd said the classic event was the perfect opportunity for people to take a step back in time. “People get to experience the yesteryears,” he said. Tractor engines, a steam roller, classic and vintage cars, trucks and trains, miniature train rides and an animal farm will feature at this year’s event. The tractor pull was started more than 40 years ago by the Gisborne and Steam Engine

Success from the sea By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury fish and chip store is proving to be batter than all the rest. Seafood on Evans is in the running to be named Victoria’s People’s Choice 2019 for best fish and chip store in the state. Owner Tony Moussa has been at the store since 2000. He said he was honoured to be up for the same award two years in a row. “It’s an ecstatic feeling, it’s great,” he said. “But you’ve got to remember, if you put the hard work [in], it always pays off. Not only in this industry but in any industry.” The fish and chip enthusiast won the same award last year. Mr Moussa said he credited the store’s success to using fresh fish and his ability to cook a full menu for his gluten free customers. “We cook traditional fish and chips, we grew our menu to a bigger and better menu – upmarket, but we kept our traditional fish and chips,” he said. “I don’t like using frozen fish. “Also, we cater for the coeliac society, so we cook a full menu of gluten free on Tuesdays and Saturdays. “If I can make someone that can’t have a product go home and enjoy a meal, I’m over the moon.” Mr Moussa has been cooking the Aussie favourite since 1986, starting “from the heart of fresh fish in Lakes Entrance”. “I’ve kept that in all my shops,” he said. “I’ve got a passion for food, for serving someone and now, I’ve found a passion for the coeliac society.” Mr Moussa said his staff and his loyal customers in Sunbury had helped him get to where he is now. “I’ve got a great team,” he said. Ranges’ bus service boost Macedon Ranges bus services have been given a boost, with 60 extra services set to be implemented for travel between key towns. The number of weekday services connecting Lancefield, Romsey and Monegeetta and surrounding destinations will increase from 85 to 145. The existing service will be broken down into three distinct routes, each with their own timetables with extra services added on each route. The Lancefield to Sunbury route will increase to nine return trips on weekdays, and the Lancefield to Gisborne service will increase from two return services to 10. Lancefield to Sunbury services will also better connect with trains at Sunbury, while maintaining existing connections at Clarkefield Station during peak periods. All new services will run to the same stopping patterns between Monday and Saturday. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the extra services would make travelling easier for locals and visitors. “We’re serious about improving public transport for all regional Victorians and this is yet another example of how we’re determined to deliver for the Macedon Ranges,” she said. Lions continue winning streak By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions passed their biggest test of the Ballarat Netball League season so far with flying colours on Saturday. Facing reigning premiers North Ballarat City, the Lions put in a strong four quarter performance to win 54-45 and remain unbeaten this season. Lions coach Adam Boldiston said it was a match they had pencilled in at the start of the season as a good indicator of how they shape up this season. “It’s definitely a good test,â€? he said. “The fact we were missing Ruth [Smith] and Tarryn [Munro], we didn’t really know what to expect. “Loz Gilcrist really stood up through the middle and it was Suzi Johnson’s first full game in A-grade this season and she had to chase the McCartins around and do a lot of work. “Young Shelby Holter had a stellar game and they didn’t know how to match up on her.â€? The Lions jumped out of the blocks early, which allowed them to control the game in the first half with a double figure lead for a lot of the first half. Boldiston said the start was different from the last two times they played City, when they were beaten early. He said it had come as a bit of a surprise after a poor warm up. “The first quarter we came out hard,â€? he said. “To get the dominance early, makes them play the chasing game ‌ and that’s the way you always want it to be.â€? City, who were without goaler Jordyn Bibby, had a better third quarter and were able to
reduce the margin to five goals at stages. Boldiston said the key message at three quarter time was for the side to continue to back themselves in. “The message at three quarter time to the girls in the attack end was to go back to what they were doing. “They had got gun shy letting the ball go. “They got back to doing that and the intensity lifted and we were away again.� Amanda Cusack shot 31 goals, while 17-year-old Holter shot 23 goals from 28 attempts. Boldiston said Holter, who was originally going to be in their B-grade team this team, had been promoted to the A-grade team for the rest of the season. “She has a lot of upside to her,� Boldiston said. “She played the first three weeks. We didn’t have AC [Cusack] for two weeks, so she played goal shooter and last week and again this week we didn’t have Ruth, so she played goal attack. After the third round, I decided she’d stay up for the season. “Having another tall will give the opposition something to think about. I’m excited by the options I’ve got.� The win gives the Lions a 4-0 record heading into the interleague break. Boldiston said he was really happy with how things were playing out so far. “I’m happy with that and I knew this one was the one that I had earmarked. “We’ve had a better pre-season and they’ve been training more and the skill level had improved. “There’s a renewed energy through the club.�

SPORT Bombers back to their best with big win over Wallan Riddell got a much needed win in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. At the risk of starting the season 1-3, the Bombers put in their best performance of the season to beat a strong Wallan side. The game was in the balance at half-time, before the Bombers kicked 12 goals to two after to win, 21.12 (138)-9.8 (62). Bombers co-coach Jamie Elliott said they played out some really good football. “I had a look at them [Wallan] last week when we had the bye,” he said. “They’re a quality side and it was going to be about who won the battle in the middle. “For three quarters we controlled the middle which was pleasing. We had a plan and they executed it to a tee, besides the second quarter. “I was really happy with it. We needed a win like this as we didn’t know how our form stacked up.” Elliott said the most pleasing thing about the performance was the even spread of contributors. He said the younger guys played their roles, while the experienced guys led from the front.
“It was a pretty even spread and we’re hard to get beaten if we do that as a team.” Dylan Tarczon kicked six goals in a best on ground performance, while Haydn Ross and Matt Panuccio were also solid contributors. The win brings the Bombers back to 2-2, after starting the season 0-2. Elliott said they had made some slight changes in their last two matches, which has helped them turn around their form. “It’s a few little things, nothing major,” he said. “There was some discipline issues. “We tinkered with the game plan a little bit and made some positional changes.” Elliott knows that they need to continue the momentum they’ve gained with their last two wins, with a tough back end of the season. Unfortunately for the Bombers they will have to wait another week to continue that momentum, with the interleague bye this week. “We’ve got to keep performing that way,” Elliott said. “We have to turn the screws and keep going. “We don’t want to be in a position where you have to keep winning games to play finals.
“The last seven or eight games are against the top sides, the likes of Diggers, Rupo and Wallan. “We have to stay strong and string a few wins together.” Melton Centrals were competitive against Diggers Rest in the closest game of the round. The Burras had enough class to win, 16.10 (106)-11.8 (74). Macedon found some form against Woodend-Hesket, winning 14.15 (99)-7.3 (45). It was one sided affairs in the other games. Rupertswood smashed Rockbank, 43.21 (279)-0.1 (1), with Nick Grigg kicking eight goals. Lions put it all together By Tara Murray The Sunbury Lions produced their best performance of the Ballarat Football League season to date, beating North Ballarat City on Saturday. The Lions produced their first four quarter effort and were rewarded with a 16.17 (113)-11.5 (71) win at Clarke Oval. The Lions dominated play early in the game, but it wasn’t until the second half when they were able to run away with the game. While City finished the game off by winning the final quarter, the Lions had done all the hard work early to get the win. Lions coach Travis Hodgson said he was pleased with the performance. “We got the four points against Melton South a few weeks ago, but I don’t think it was that convincing, but today we were really good. “I think the key thing in the other games, we were a little bit easy to play against at times. “I thought we were a lot harder to play against, which was a key.” Not for the first time this season, the Lions were inaccurate in front of goal. The Lions had a massive 25 inside 50s in the first quarter, but only scored 3.7. Hodgson said they didn’t take their opportunities early to put City away. “Twenty-five inside 50s and 10 scoring shots, you’ll take that any day of the week especially to start a game, but we didn’t take opportunities. “The flip side they got some really easy goals, after quarter time we got it back on our terms a bit. “The third quarter was really good footy, we started to get some reward for the work we had done in the second quarter. “I could see it coming then and we were doing things the right way.” Alik Magin was best on ground, with Hodgson saying he has been their best player in three of the four matches so far. Grant Valles also did a brilliant job. Hodgson said they had moved Valles back into defence the last couple of weeks. “Valles played on a wing for the first few weeks as we’ve had Ben Brennan and Paddy MacDonough and we’ve been pretty tall down back. “We omitted MacDonough and Ben Brennan, who weren’t bad and we think are in our best 22, but just too tall. “It’s allowed us to play Grant back. The team will represent the league at the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships against the Outer East Netball team next week, and then at the association champs finals in June. Hodgson was also full of praise for Liam Berry, who played his best game under Hodgson, and Josh Muir and Jack Hannett, who came up from the reserves. Hodgson said the depth at the club was starting to show through in recent weeks. The day was also a special one, with skipper Andrew Duhau playing his 100th game for the club. Hodgson said Duhau was held in high regard.
“He embodied what we wanted to be today,” he said. “He’s very selfless and an influence on making other players better. “He’s a real leader off field, the glue that holds it all together.” The Lions have this week off, due to the interleague break. The Lions, who sit 2-2, then face the coach’s former side Bacchus Marsh the following week.

Jets get one back over Broncos By Tara Murray The Sunbury Jets got some revenge back over Hume City Broncos in Big V women’s state championship. With the Broncos winning the battle in round one, the Jets were able to come away with the points this time round. For most of the match, the two teams went goal for goal, with a thriller on the cards. A five minute patch to start the last quarter would prove to be the difference, with the Jets winning 84-74. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama – while thrilled to get the win – said it wasn’t their best performance. “Both coaches wouldn’t be happy with the execution in different areas on the floor,” he said. “There were times Hume looked tremendous and times that we looked great. “Any win away though is great.” Kereama said they made some adjustments in the final quarter to their offense which seemed to make a difference. He said their defence was also pretty good for that period, after not being where they had wanted it to be. “I wasn’t happy with our defence, but there was that five minute period in the last quarter that it was great but that was it. “That first five minutes of the last quarter was pretty crucial for us. “Keeping them to five points and scoring 14 ourselves, it created the buffer for us and once we got that momentum, we pretty much kept the margin for the majority of the game.” Kereama said both teams would only get better. The Broncos were missing import Azia Bishop with an ankle injury, while Monique Stevens missed for the Jets.
Kereama said if the two teams were to meet again this season, it would be a really good match-up. “Hume are a pretty good team and in my opinion they have the best point guard in the league in Nicky Zammit. She is so damn good. “BreAnna Brock has been tremendous for them, she’s strong and a real presence for them down in the paint in defence. “Once they add Azia Bishop back, I think they will be formidable.” Three players did the bulk of the scoring for the Jets, with Lynn Leaupepe (29 points), Orla O’Reilly (24 points) and Courtney Duever (23) combining for 76 of the 84 points. Kereama said while some of the other players had quieter nights on the scoreboard, they had still played their roles. “We don’t care who scores the points, we just want to win.” Kereama said the return of O’Reilly in the last two weeks had been a big boost for the side. In another bonus, Jacinta Beckley made her debut for the Jets. “I said to the team it will be like a preseason again, we add Orla, who played her second game, and add Jacinta for her first game, everyone is still getting a feel for each other. “Orla is last year’s league [grand final] MVP and you’re adding her to a team that has been mighty competitive without her. “Jacinta is a smart player and but it will take some time.” The Jets this week face a struggling Bulleen Boomers side.
