Macedon Ranges residential property owners can expect an increase in their rates next financial year. Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce presented the council’s draft budget for 2019-20 at a council meeting last week. The report proposes an average 2.6 per cent increase in property owner’s rates and charges. Council’s waste charge will increase by 3 per cent to cover the introduction of a new food organic collection service. This year’s draft budget provides more than $80 million towards delivering services and projects and proposes a rate increase within the imposed 2.5 per cent rate cap. Nearly $10 million will be spent on improving and maintaining roads and bridges, along with new footpaths and drainage works. Cr Pearce said the council was committed to “significantly increasing spending on council facilities and buildings” in the Macedon Ranges. “We will continue to invest in maintaining our extensive range of assets including the road network, footpaths and drainage,” she said. “Increased funding has also been proposed for additional resources for the operations team to ensure the amenity of our trees, parks and roadsides are maintained to a high standard. “Funds are proposed for a number of projects that will improve the cycling and walkability of the shire, as well as new pedestrian crossings in Gisborne and Woodend.” The council has increased spending on facilities, including upgrading the changerooms at Dixon Field and Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne and Tony Clarke Reserve in Macedon. The old piggery shed building in Kyneton’s Botanic Gardens will be restored and the former maternal and child health centre in Victoria Street, Macedon will be renovated for potential use as a new neighbourhood house. Together with the Victorian government, the council will deliver the new Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct in New Gisborne, including completing stage two of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park. Funding has also been allocated to begin the planning and implementation of recommendations from the dog on and off-leash review and cat curfew. Police promise station to stay By Jessica Micallef The Macedon police station will remain open amid concern surrounding its future. Last week, Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt indicated the station may close in the near future due to a lack of police resources. The one-man station, which operates eight hours a day, is currently being operated by officers from nearby towns. But Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said there was never any intention to close the Macedon station.

“The [Macedon] officer is currently injured and temporarily off work and the Macedon Ranges police services area commander Chris Large is ensuring that there are police … in that community,” she said. “In an area like Macedon, we have a Macedon Ranges police services area and that includes a number of stations.” Ms Thomas said it was up to Victoria Police to make more police officers available throughout the Macedon Ranges. “The Victoria government has provided record funding to Victoria Police including

employing more than 3000 police and they are currently being rolled out,” she said. “How they are deployed is a decision for Victoria Police.” Macedon Ranges Police Inspector Chris Large also said there was never any intention to shut down the station. He said officers from other stations will cover

the Macedon area until the station returns to normal circumstances. Victoria Police said in a statement: “[The] Macedon community will continue to receive a 24 hour police response”. “There are no plans to close Macedon police station. “Recently, there has been a period of temporary closure due to [an] unplanned absence. There will be a police presence at Macedon police station using resources from across the Macedon Ranges police service area until normal arrangements resume.”

Top drop marks 20 years in business Holgate Brewhouse is celebrating 20 years in business. The Woodend brewery has come a long way since its inception in a backyard shed and co-founder Natasha Holgate said she was delighted they had reached this milestone. “It’s awesome that over 20 years we’ve seen a huge interest in craft beer in the general population,” she said. “It’s become a vibrant industry and I think it’s given people a lot of choice.” Ms Holgate and her husband Paul Holgate started their brewery in May 1999 in Woodend.

“We started off by just putting up a shed at a property … we started brewing at home,” she said. “In 2002, we took over the hotel in Woodend and at the time it was the Keatings Hotel. Then in 2006 we moved the brewery from home to the hotel.” Ms Holgate said the brewery had become a drawcard in Woodend – attracting visitors from near and far. “It’s actually manufacturing something in the heart of Woodend and it’s something everyone can enjoy,” she said.

To celebrate two decades in business the brewery is re-releasing its first beer, with a special twist on the original recipe. “The first beer was an ESB, an extra special bitter,” Ms Holgate said. “So what we’re doing is, we’re making a bigger version – it’s higher in alcohol and we’re also putting it into a 500ml can.” The special edition beer will be released during Good Beer Week, May 11-19. A Sunbury child health hub could become a reality if a Labor government is elected at this month’s federal election. Labor is promising to deliver $2.5 million to fund stage one of the project, which is expected to be located at Sunbury Community Health. The proposed hub will bring together paediatric allied health professionals including speech and language pathology, audiology, paediatric occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Sunbury Community Health chief executive Phill Ripper said the funding pledge was welcome given Sunbury’s growing population. “Families are the best places for kids and supporting parents to be their child’s first educator – the most important educator is what we’re about,” he said. “The idea of a hub and the capacity to build on that is really welcomed. “We have been able to keep up with a fair bit of that growth … but as anyone who walks through this building knows, we are absolutely at breaking point and have been for quite some time. “It’ll be a welcome relief for our staff and visitors but most importantly the children and families that use our service.” McEwen MP Rob Mitchell was at Sunbury Community Health on Friday to announce the election pledge. He said the child hub would be a boon for Sunbury families. “This is going to be a big opportunity to expand, give more room … [and] to deal with the huge amount of growth that we have in this area,” he said.

Boardman Reserve pledge

An elected federal Labor government will invest $500,000 to complete upgrades at Sunbury’s Eric Boardman Reserve. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said the money would help community sports clubs based at the reserve to provide more local sports opportunities. Dedicated female changerooms are planned, as are improvements to the pavilions and social rooms, lighting, pathways, carparking and landscaping.

Still furry and fun at 40 Hip hip hooray for the Sunbury Animal Hospital. It’s the hospital’s 40th anniversary this year and the clinic – and its furry friends – will be celebrating in style. Dr John Patton first established the Sunbury Animal Hospital four decades ago in a renovated house on the same site it’s on today. A 35-year-old Sunbury man has been charged with a number of drug-related offences. Fawkner detectives arrested the man in Sunbury on April 25 after executing a drug warrant at a Macedon Street residence about 8.10am. Police allegedly seized traffickable quantities of methyl amphetamine and cannabis, along with cash and fake number plates.

Magic on the mount By Jessica Micallef The Mount Macedon Anzac Day dawn service has once again attracted a big crowd to the mount’s famous cross. Dawn service committee chairman Bruce Mildenhall said people came by bus from all over the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury to attend this year’s service. He said the atmosphere for the service was ideal. “It was respectful but very engaged,” he said. “The Sacred Heart Kyneton choir are beautiful singers and I think they really captivated people by their singing of Amazing Grace and a couple of other songs. “We had the most perfect weather, a little chilly as usual.” This year marked a century since the official end of World War I. “Our theme of the service was the transition between active service and war experiences back to civilian life,” Mr Mildenhall said. “It was our 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War where a lot of injured and shell-shocked troops came back.” One of the many highlights of the dawn service for Mr Mildenhall was listening to Dr Frank Donovan sing against the backdrop of the Mount Macedon Cross. “He’s a Vietnam veteran and he sang his song Bleed On Now Now,” Mr Mildenhall said. “I guess the message of it is the effects of war that bleed on down through the families. “The unique setting of Mount Macedon – where the sun comes up at dawn over the mountains and strikes the cross and lights it up – that’s quite an extraordinary sight for anyone who sees it for the first time. “So we’re in a quite unique setting and had a really special service because of it.”

New money for old memorial The Gisborne War Memorial will keep the legacy of veterans alive for future generations in the Macedon Ranges. More than $8500 – part of the state government’s Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program – will go towards upgrading the Gisborne War Memorial on Hamilton Street. Construction at the site will include the installation of stone plinths with two plaques which will include names of men and women from the local area who served in World War II and other conflicts. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the site was significant for Gisborne and surrounding towns. “Macedon is home to so many veterans who have served us proud and we’re helping ensure their stories are never forgotten,” she said. “The Gisborne War Memorial is an important part of the identity of the township and it is fantastic to see funding to honour those … who have fallen defending our country.” Jessica Micallef

Inspired by design Council’s Draft Budget Report 2019/20, Draft Council Plan 2017–2027 (Year 3) and Draft Strategic Resource Plan 2019/20 have been prepared for public display and comment. The Draft Budget Report 2019/20 is the short-term plan which specifies the resources required to fund Council’s works and services over the next 12 months. It includes the proposed rates and charges, which will be levied on rateable properties. The Draft Council Plan 2017–2027 (Year 3) is organised around five main priorities.

A Gisborne fashion designer is proving to be an inspiration. Megan Taylor, 22, was named Kangan Institute’s Inspirational Student of the Year during her graduation ceremony earlier this month. “I’m so thankful for all my teachers and the staff at Kangan and all the support I received,” Ms Taylor said. “I know there were a couple of others [students] that were nominated for the award and I know that any one of them would have deserved it as much.” The budding fashion designer (pictured) suffers from a condition known as hyper mobility spectrum disorder. But this hasn’t stopped her from completing her advanced diploma at Kangan Institute and moving on to

Whitehouse Institute of Design, where she is now undertaking a bachelor of fashion design. “Basically, my body doesn’t have enough collagen,” she said. “Collagen holds your bones and joints together – it’s a simple term of saying everything is more bendy. “It requires a lot more energy to keep everything aligned. I can suffer from bad posture if I am not careful.” Ms Taylor is hoping her achievement will inspire others who may have a disability to not let it stop them from pursuing their dreams. “You’ll never get where you want to get if you keep up with everyone else … you can do it in your own way.” Jessica Micallef

What is your connection to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges? My wife and I, we’ve been long-time residents in Gisborne South … we’ve been here for 45 years. I have a strong connection to the sporting side of things with the Gisborne Football Club. I have been a long-time active member there … I had been doing the boundary umpiring. What are you passionate about? I am a collector of old motoring memorabilia. I do have a part-time business [and] I import items from overseas. I go to swap meets, car shows, and the occasional market. I never collect anything in a particular group, it’s just really anything I find that’s unusual or quirky. How did you come about participating in the Historic Winton? When it got to the early ’90s, I was a lost sheep because Gisborne Football Club moved to the Bendigo Football Club and they have their own umpires. I looked at something else that was an interest when I was a teenager, which was cars. I then looked up the historic car racing scene and I joined the Austin Seven Club. It was one of my first cars when I was a youngster. I co-ordinate the Historic Winton and I have been in that role for the past 15 years. Tell me about the car you’ll be racing in. It’s a Gipsy Special. It’s a true Aussie special out of bits and pieces and it has an aeroplane

engine. The family call it ‘the beast’. It has a huge amount of power with the aeroplane engine compared with other vehicles. When you put the foot down, it can be very scary. What is the best thing about Sunbury and the

Macedon Ranges?

We love the tranquility, the quietness. Within five minutes, you’re away from the hustle and I’d probably look at the road planning. Jessica Liston has set up a GoFundMe page to transport 20 Waler horses from the Northern Territory to her property in Clarkefield. (Damjan Janevski)

Working to save Walers After being introduced to the Waler horse five years ago, Jessica Liston was inspired to do everything she could to save the breed. Widely used by the Australian Army in the 1900s, there are now less than 500 Waler horses in Australia. “When I met them, I was really inspired to research more and find out about their history,” Ms Liston said. Earlier this month, Ms Liston embarked on a trip to the Northern Territory to visit and relocate a herd of Walers. She set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of raising $20,000 to assist with the transportation of the horses to her Clarkefield property where she already has several Waler horses.

Ms Liston said the campaign had been received warmly by the public. “We’re really fortunate – it’s just hit that mark so it’s really exciting that it’s becoming a reality,” she said. “We made a plan with the local people there and the indigenous community to all work together to be able to catch the horses … and transport the horses to Victoria. “Anything over $20,000 will go to employing the indigenous community to handling the horses up there and to really assist in … getting these horses into great horse homes.” To donate: bit.ly/2GBEGxb Jessica Micallef

SPORT Inaccurate Lions get first points on the board Sunbury Lions will be hoping to snare an away victory this weekend when it takes on Redan in the Ballarat Football League. The Lions last won a game on the road just over 12 months ago when they beat Melton South, in Melton, in round two last season. Lions’ coach Travis Hodgson said they were well aware of their terrible road record in recent times. “We’ve made a conscious effort to change that,” he said. “Redan had a really good win in their only game against Ballarat. “This game looms as a really big challenge for us.” The Lions will enter the game on the back of their first win of the season, beating Melton South at the weekend. Hodgson said it wasn’t the side’s greatest performance, but they did enough to win 12.15 (87)-10.6 (66). “It’s good to get on the board,” he said. “South were competitive and stayed close

enough. They are a young side and they keep that intensity when they are close. “We got the margin out to 40 points in the last quarter before they kicked the last few goals of the game. “We were a fair bit off our best.” Hodgson said they didn’t use the ball well and were again poor in front of goal – after kicking 13 points and seven out on the full in round one, they kicked another 15 points against the Panthers. Jack Sheehan was the main culprit this week, kicking 0.5. Hodgson said while it was frustrating, it was something that was easily addressed. Lachie Bramble, Alik Magin, Andrew Duhau and Alec Goodson kicked three goals each for the Lions. Hodgson said Bramble and Magin were the clear standouts. “Lachie broke the lines and opened the game out,” he said. “Alik is just class and every time he touches the ball something happens.

“Jayden Eales was good in the ruck, while Mitch Conn was handy, but the other two were the best two players.” Hodgson said that Ben Brennan is expected to return this week, having missed Saturday’s game due to work commitments. He said he expected Dylan Landt to again be in the mix for Essendon’s VFL side, having made his debut for the club at the weekend. Meanwhile in the A-grade netball, the Lions had a big win against Melton South. The Lions took the lead in the first quarter and extended that throughout the game, winning, 61-38. Romsey shows strength By Tara Murray Romsey opened its account in the Riddell District Netball League with a hard-fought win against Woodend-Hesket. An under strength Redbacks side took a little while to get into the game but once settled they broke the game open and capitalised on the Hawks turnovers. Redbacks held a solid lead at three-quarter time. The Hawks showed some grit in the final quarter but the game was over, with the Redbacks winning 48-35. Injured Redbacks’ defender Monique Clark said they know they have things to work on. She said in the end they ran out of legs in the final quarter. “A win is a win,” she said. “We had five girls out and to have a few B-grade girls step up was really good. “A few of the girls had played in B-grade before A-grade so there was a few tired bodies. “Things were going a bit wrong and we just weren’t in the right head space to fix it, but we’ll work on that.” Coach Luke Marko Rawlings missed the match because he was playing with the Victorian under-23 men’s team at the Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Association Championships. Shooter Rebecca Hicks travelled two hours back from the national titles, having been part of the open mixed team. Clark said the quality of players who were able to step up showed the depth at the club. Paula Jewell, Hope Evans, Lauren Anglin, Megan Sampson and Alicija Marko Rawlings, who all stepped up, have played A-grade netball before. Hicks, who came on at quarter-time, shot 34 goals from 37 attempts, while Alicija Marko Rawlings shot 10 goals in her first game at the club. Stefanie Symes was best on court, dominating in defence. Clark said Symes goes to another level when she needs to. Clark, who dislocated her knee while playing in the Victorian Netball League on Wednesday night, said she would miss a few more weeks but the team was hopeful of having everyone, including captain Chelsea Ross, who has been out with a calf injury, return to the side in the next few weeks. Breakthrough win for Gisborne Gisborne has broken through for its first win of the FFV state league 4 west season. After a tough start to life at a higher level, the Sky Blues put it all together on Saturday night against Golden Plains. Not only did they break their drought, they did it in style, winning 6-0. Sky Blues’ coach Danny Ciantar was thrilled with the result. He said while they hadn’t won until this week, the morale and enthusiasm had been at training throughout. “It has been a hard fight over the first four to five weeks,” Ciantar said. “We had periods of lack of concentration and were making fundamental mistakes. “The boys finally put it all together and got the result they deserved.” The Sky Blues had plenty of opportunities to score on Saturday, with Ciantar saying they could quite easily have scored 10 to 12 goals if they had taken their opportunities. They led 3-0 at half-time, before finishing the game off with another three goals in the second half. Jake McIntyre and Matthew Biles scored two goals each for the Sky Blues, while Matthew Pecipajkovski and Callan Haynes scored the other goals. The Sky Blues sit in 10th after five rounds with a 1-1-3 record. This week they face winless Laverton. Ciantar said their season really starts from now. He hoped with a win on the board the confidence within the side would grow. “That was the first win we have had since August,” he said. “Hopefully we can move forward and pick up some points this weekend. “There’s some belief and confidence in the group now, hopefully we’ll see some good results in the next few weeks.” Sunbury United got its third win of the season in state league 3 north-west on Saturday. Sunbury Jets had no trouble accounting for the Whittlesea Pacers on Saturday night in the Big V women’s state championship competition. The Jets produced a second 100-point score of the season, on the way to a 106-51 win. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said it wasn’t the prettiest game. He said the Pacers stayed in zone all game, something he was seeing more of across the league, which didn’t always make the best basketball to watch. “It was an ugly game, but we’re happy to get the win,” Kereama said. “Our second half was much better than our first half. Our defence in the third quarter was excellent, I would have liked to see that throughout the whole game. “It was would have been good to see some consistency.” Kereama said defensively they created turnovers, which showed with 30 steals. Stockill led the way with five. “You can look at it two different ways,” Kereama said. “They didn’t play well, but I think credit to our defence. Kennedy Kereama said one of the biggest positives of the night was giving some of the younger players time on court. Every player took to the court, playing at least 12 minutes. Gisborne remains unbeaten in the Bendigo Football League, after a big win against Kangaroo Flat on Saturday. The Bulldogs led from start to finish, winning 21.16 (142)-8.5 (53). Jack Scanlon and Pat McKenna kicked five goals each for the Bulldogs, while Brad Bernacki was named their best. Meanwhile, Kyneton is on the board this season with a 17.14 (116)-6.15 (51) win against Castlemaine.

Having been smashed by the Hawks the last time the two teams met, the Redbacks were ready to get one back over them. Besides a small period of play late in the first quarter, the Redbacks put on a show and blew the Hawks off the park, winning 25.15 (165)-7.7(49). Redbacks’ coach Corey O’Sullivan said they pencilled the game in as an “eight point” game. “We had a really poor game against Woodend last year over there and we were pretty stung by it,” he said. “They are coming for our spot, and as far as we are concerned we’re not going to give it up. “It’s pleasing that we’re understanding our game plan better, the way we want to play our footy. “We injected a few players into there who can expose a bit of pace, it was good.” O’Sullivan said they dominated from early in the game, but it took a while to get the reward on the scoreboard. A few changes in the forward line worked wonders, as they outscored the Hawks 20 goals to four after quarter-time. Most pleasingly for O’Sullivan was the tackling pressure. “We tackled really well today, which was a focus,” he said. “Woodend are a hard-at-it side and play a brand of football which is hard. “We had 54 tackles for the game. In a game where you’ve had 40 scoring shots, dominating across the ground, to have that many tackles was pleasing.” O’Sullivan said their workrate was good as well, with the group putting in those extra efforts. Mitch Jensen led the way up forward with seven goals, but they had plenty of targets, with six other players scoring multiple goals. O’Sullivan said Connor Whelan in the ruck and Jaidyn Caruana (four goals) were the best two players on the ground. Whelan finished the game on the bench having copped a slight knee injury. O’Sullivan used the opportunity to try a few things. “Harrison Notman went into the ruck and Joel Naylor went onto the ball as a 6’4 midfielder and got four clearances,” O’Sullivan said. “You’ve got to make sure you have players who can play multiple positions to play finals football and win, we haven’t done that in the past.” Tyson Chapman was the only multiple goalscorer for the Hawks, kicking two goals. Ben Toman was named their best on a tough day. The Redbacks will, for the first time this
