Black day remembered By Jessica Micallef Many people still remember the events that unfolded on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The Black Saturday fires that swept across Victoria caused catastrophic damage and claimed the lives of 173 people. Twelve homes were destroyed in the small town of Redesdale, 30 kilometres north of Kyneton. Homes were also threatened in nearby Mia Mia. One local resident, who did not want to be named, said 10 years on, she can remember the day clearly. “We went down to the river for a swim because it was a ridiculously hot day,” she said. “We heard all the fire truck sirens, so we decided it was probably time to go home and we chose to evacuate.” She said at the time she had no inkling of how catastrophic the fires were. “We had no idea it would actually get to our home – we really thought we were in a fairly safe area,” she said. “But I’m thankful we left … my children were three and six at the time. We can rebuild homes but you just can’t rebuild lives.” The family returned home more than 48 hours after the fires but she said it took them three months to get back to a normal life. Her children are still wary of fire. “The kids’ emotional state took longer – just leaving them at school, they were scared of being away from us,” she said. “They’re still scared of bonfires … you’ve got to pre-warn them that it’s a safe fire and it’s not going to hurt them.” In 2010, a mosaic memorial was created at the Kyneton town hall. Constructed by artist Kathryn Portelli, the memorial has recently had lighting installed after the Macedon Ranges council received a state government grant. A state commemoration service was held yesterday at the Royal Exhibition Building, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires on Thursday. A service will be held at St Mary’s Anglican Church Woodend on February 7 from noon.

All prepped and ready Kinder sweethearts Lyla and Xander are counting down the days to their first day of school. The excited duo will be among many preps starting school at Sunbury Heights Primary School this Wednesday. Xander’s mum Tace Watson said the pair had an instant connection when they first met. “They met at Learmonth kindergarten at the start of last year and they’ve just bounced off each other and they were mates ever since,” Ms Watson. She said it was “pure coincidence” that Lyla and Xander would be attending the same school. “When Xander found out Lyla was going, he was stoked and then we actually asked for them to be in the same class as each other because they’re not two kids that are boisterous together … these two can sit together and they encourage each other as well,” Ms Watson said. Lyla’s mum Zoe Kasek said she had mixed emotions about Lyla beginning school. “My daughter’s the oldest so she’ll be my first one going so I’ll probably cry,” Ms Kasek said. Xander and Lyla will be among an estimated 86,000 eager preps who started their schooling during the past week. Jessica Micallef

Police ire at holiday road stats By Jessica Micallef More than 20 drivers a day, on average, were caught breaking the law on Hume roads during the Australia Day long weekend. Police were out in full force on Victorian roads as part of the statewide Operation Amity from January 25 to January 28. Police intercepted 68 drivers on Hume roads, including five speeding drivers and 23 drivers disobeying traffic signals. Police nabbed 18 drivers driving unregistered vehicles, while three drivers were caught drink driving.
On Macedon Ranges roads, 53 drivers were intercepted by police during the three-day weekend. Police caught 38 speeding drivers, two drivers using their mobile phones, while two disqualified drivers were behind the wheel. Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said it was disappointing to see road users putting themselves and others at risk. “We all know that speed and impairment are among the biggest killers on our road, so it’s astounding to see so many motorists exceeding the speed limit or driving after drinking or

using drugs,” Assistant Commissioner Leane said. “Last year saw a record low number of lives lost in Victoria, with 214, but the tragic start to 2019 shows that we can’t afford to be complacent.” Commissioner Leane said five people died
All revved up for Hanging Rock show Graham Williams is driving around in his classic pride and joy. Mr Williams said he bought his beloved 1969 Ford Fairmont 12 years ago. “It was a mass-produced car of the day so it was a mum-and-dad type car,” he said. “It came with that engine and we pretty much haven’t restored it at all so it’s pretty original. “That’s the way we like it … it’s a bit rough, it’s very noisy.” The car enthusiast had been around cars since he was 18, but said over the years his much-loved hobby had to have the brakes put on it. “I’ve just always been in car clubs but [I] dropped out of the car movement when we had kids because I just didn’t have time or disposable income, so you sort of park your hobbies … it’s only in the last few years that I’ve come back,” Mr Williams said. He has been involved with the Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club for 11 years. He has been bringing his classic car to Hanging Rock’s annual picnic day and car display ever since. “Our car club is all makes and models, so we’ve got everything,” Mr Williams said. “The event is based around that philosophy that if you’ve got a car that’s a classic and you love it, bring it. “You might find a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow parked next to an old Volkswagen, parked next to a 40-year-old Porsche … that’s what makes the event so different.” While Mr Williams is a lover of all cars, he admits Fords have always been his favourite. “My dad always drove Fords, my wife’s dad always drove Fords, my wife’s brother also always drove Fords, so there’s always been a blue oval at our house,” he said. The car display will be on February 10 at Hanging Rock between 8am-3pm.

The heat is staying on Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to be fire ready as blistering temperatures are forecast to continue. Victoria has sweltered through its hottest January on record with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees. Kyneton CFA second lieutenant Greg McIntyre said he was grateful there had been no major bushfires in the area so far this summer, but warned residents against complacency. “It only takes a couple of hot days and strong winds and the fuels are ready to go,” he said. “Even though we had some rain recently, the rain will dry.” Mr McIntyre said residents needed to prepare their properties for high fire danger days. “Clean up around the house … trim trees if possible, keep bark off trees and keep flammable items away from the building.” He encouraged residents to leave early if there were fires in the area. “Be aware of your surroundings by looking outside,” he said. “If the smoke is heading towards your home, you really need to leave.” The scorching temperatures are far from over – according to Climate Council acting chief executive Martin Rice. “January’s record-breaking month is part of a sharp, long-term upswing in temperatures,” Mr Rice said. “December, 2018, was also the hottest on record and February and March are shaping up to be scorchers, too. “This extreme heat has many implications, both for the environment and for human health.”

A St John family affair By Jessica Micallef A Sunbury family is keeping its St John Ambulance volunteering tradition well and truly alive. Allan, Glenn, and Kaitlyn Wilson work with St John throughout the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges. Allan said he had been with the organisation for nearly four decades, following in the footsteps of his father, George. “It would’ve been about 1980, for me,” Allan said. “Dad was in it for many years before that

… I used to go with him on some of the St John duties when I was a kid.” Glenn started volunteering in 2012 through a school program at Sunbury College. His sister, Kaitlyn, has been with the organisation for a year. For Glenn, volunteering is about more than duty – it is enjoyable and satisfying. “We knew that dad and grandpa were in it, so I thought it would be interesting to see what they did and we’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “We get to go out on events with Kaitlyn, we
go to the Gisborne Market and a lot of Sunbury local events.” Glenn said that while helping people was the most rewarding aspect of volunteering, he also appreciated the education he received. “It’s not all life or death,” he said. “It’s even just helping someone … a Band-Aid or cleaning up a wound. There’s a lot of professional development opportunities as well, so a lot of our members get guaranteed access into their courses … it also helps them, with the experience and the knowledge they gain.”
Motorists are being reminded to drive safely in and around school zones as the 2019 school year gets under way. Hume council mayor Carly Moore said drivers needed to take extra care around schools. “Being considerate, patient and mindful of pedestrians in the increased traffic, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times, will help ensure that every child in Hume is able to get to and from school safely,” Cr Moore said. “There is no excuse for not following 40 kilometre speed limits or parking restrictions in school zones. “Helping your child get to school safely is our priority. “As of the start of the 2019 school year, we have engaged 98 crossing supervisors whose responsibility is to ensure that over 40,000 students in Hume get to school safely.” Hume’s school-aged population is tipped to rise by 53 per cent to 63,023 children aged 5-17. “This remarkable growth demonstrates great confidence in our city and more importantly, it illustrates how the combination of affordability, infrastructure and services continues to attract young families to Hume,” Cr Moore said, “Council will continue to advocate for better roads, services and infrastructure to ensure that young families can provide a sound education for their children.” Jessica Micallef

School’s officially in at Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School. Principal Krystine Hocking said she was excited to open the new Sunbury school. “It’s a great opportunity to be a foundation principal of a brand new school and we’ve been working very hard with the staff to really make sure that we offer our children great learning opportunities,” she said. Ms Hocking said the school had 52 pupils. “The school will be prep to year 6, [but] when we open it’ll only be prep to year 5,” she said. “Our projected enrolment is 600 so at the moment I can take up to 240 children.” Stage one of the school’s construction is complete after building started in June. “I’ve got eight classrooms, with two shared

learning areas plus a discovery room … but we know that Sunbury is a growing area and so I’ve already applied for funding for stage two,” Ms Hocking said. The first-time principal previously worked at St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School in Fawkner. She said she was looking forward to providing her students with the best possible education. “I just really believe that our children deserve the best and I want them to be the best for the world,” Ms Hocking said. “I want to give them opportunities that perhaps we didn’t have when we were at school.” The school opened on Monday, February 4. SPORT Tigers’ last quarter blitz too little too late Bendigo Braves ended Kyneton Tigers’ season in the Country Basketball League north east competition on Saturday night. With a grand final spot on the line, both teams started nervously and took time to settle. The game was anyone’s at half-time, before the Braves found another level with a 28-12 third quarter turning the game in their favour. While the Tigers won the last quarter, it was too little too late. Final scores were 77-59. Before the game, Tigers’ coach Chris Tighe said the team needed to play well for the full 40 minutes. He said not playing out the full game had cost them in the past when the two teams played each other, and was the case again at the weekend. “We had seven turnovers in five minutes in the third quarter,” he said. “I think on nearly all of them, they scored on the other end. “You can’t give up 14 points like that. Credit to Bendigo, they shot the lights out. “We pushed defensively with purpose a little too late.”
Tighe said it was disappointing to have a third quarter fade-out after such a good first half. He said at half-time they had plenty of confidence that they could get the job done, despite trailing by five points. Beating the Braves was one item the Tigers really wanted to tick off their list this season, but fell short on three occasions. “The game was ours to lose, which we did,” Tighe said. “The second half we didn’t do ourselves any favours.” He thought perhaps the pressure of the moment got to the side which is still very young and inexperienced. Michelle Fletcher top-scored with 13 points, while Rebecca Van Kuyk (11 points) and Brooke Mangan (12) also scored double figures. While disappointed with the result, Tighe said they had come so far. It’s just the Tigers second season, having also made the semi-finals last year. “You can look at how far the team has come
and so many players have learnt different skill sets. “I’ve tried to teach them a lot of stuff. I teach a lot of different stuff.” He singled out 14-year-old Adrienne Cameron who he said has taken some big steps in her development. Tighe, who is unsure if he will continue coaching, said one of the most pleasing things was that being a young group they have time to develop. “It’ll be good for them to all be around together again next year.” The Braves will face Wodonga Lady Wolves in the grand final. Sunbury came away with a win against bottom-side Fleminton/Kensington but it wasn’t as convincing as it could have been in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1. Second-placed Sunbury won just two of four rinks, in the 92 (14)-61 (4) win. The result means Sunbury falls further behind top side Moonee Valley, which claimed all 18 points against Glenroy. Sunbury will get to test itself against Moonee Valley this weekend in a top of the table clash.
By Tara Murray Romsey is confident its batting line-up can get the job done against Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts. The match between second and third is the pick of the round on paper, and is evenly poised after the first day. The Dragons, who are missing a few players through injury, made 7-204. Brook Grumont top-scored with 42 for the Dragons, while Taylor Stevenson took 3-30 for the Redbacks. Redbacks captain-coach Ben Way said he was happy with where the game was placed. “I’m very happy with the day, it was a long day in the field,” he said. “We bowled tight lines. “To bowl 80 overs and to restrict them to 200, I don’t think that will happen often. “The ball is in our court now.” Way said there was no hesitation in believing that they could get the job done with the bat. “The last couple of years we’ve been up there as one of the top scoring teams in the competition,” he said. “We’ve managed to score quite a few this year. They do have a decent bowling attack, but we’re going into the game expecting to make the runs. “If we can’t do it, we’ll be looking at why we weren’t able to. “Obviously when you get to this time of year and getting close to finals, it’s a big game. “Depending on the result, it’s whether we go to second or are in the bottom half of the top four.” He said a top two finish would be handy and it would be the first time the club has hosted a final in a number of years. Having returned to finals last season, Way said he was happy with how they were continuing to progress. “There’s definitely been a progression again and the guys are starting to get to the stage they understand the game a bit more,” he said. “They’re learning more about themselves and learning how to play their best cricket. “We are getting better as the year goes on.” In other matches, Woodend put on a show with the bat against Sunbury United. With five batsmen scoring half centuries, Woodend made a massive 475. Nick Smith top-scored with 102. Diggers Rest Bulla has already claimed first innings points against Wallan.

Ashfield’s finals hopes received a setback having conceded first innings points on day one of its clash with Gisborne in the Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition. Ashfield was bowled out for just 56, with Harry Thomas taking 4-4 for Gisborne. The Dragons made it to 9-111 at stumps, with a lead of 55 runs. St Anthonys, Rupertswood and Bacchus Marsh are in control in the other three matches.

Macedon piled on the runs against Lancefield in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub District Firsts. Macedon made a massive 9-370 from its overs to be in control after day one. Sunbury United made 286 on the back of 108 from David Falzon, while St Anthonys made 276 against Rupertswood and Malmsbury is 2-53 in reply to Blackwood’s 9-195.
TAC Cup
The Calder Cannons girl’s side will kick off its season on March 2. The Cannons, who struggled last season, play local rival the Western Jets in the first of three matches to be played that day at Rams Arena. The boys competition kicks off on March 23 with the Cannons on the road against the Sandringham Dragons. The Cannons first home game is the following week against the Oakleigh Chargers. The Magpies were bowled out for 129, before performance from Sunbury. Veteran Jason McGann took 5-28 for the going on to make 3-167 before stumps. There was plenty of wickets in the Bacchus Roar. The Roar struggled to 6-78 at stumps, still Marsh and Sunbury game. The Bulls were bowled out for 131 in a good needing another 54 runs for victory.
