Coming up roses Bulla’s Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden is in full bloom as it celebrates its 21st anniversary. The Green Street garden is dedicated to the work of Australia’s most prolific rose breeder, Alister Clark who bred 128 different roses in Bulla between 1912 and 1949. The garden also holds the largest collection of Alister Clark roses in the world. Hume mayor Carly Moore said the garden was one of Hume and Melbourne’s hidden treasures, nestled between two bluestone buildings at the top of the Bulla hill. “If you haven’t experienced this beautiful garden yet, it is certainly worth a visit and even if you have enjoyed the garden before, there is always something new flowering,” she said. “Hume City Council and a dedicated team of volunteers have worked hard over 21 years to create and maintain this beautiful garden.” Entry to the garden is free and it is open every day during daylight hours. CFA bid to move brigade By Jessica Micallef Fire response times could be impacted if the Mount Macedon Fire Brigade relocates to a new facility, a volunteer firefighter has warned. Star Weekly has confirmed the CFA is behind a move to relocate the station from its existing site on Mount Macedon Road, further south to vacant land between the Victorian Emergency Management Institute and the Mount Macedon Golf Club, almost two kilometres away. The volunteer, who did not wish to be named, said any potential move “down the hill could lengthen the response times of fire trucks”. The CFA confirmed on Friday that talks
were now under way to relocate the brigade’s headquarters, but the location near the golf course was just one option. “It’s more than likely the brigade will be moved. The current site has been deemed unable to meet current OH&S standards,” a CFA spokesperson said. “Following the Victorian State Budget announcement of $1.6m funding for the replacement of the Mount Macedon fire station, options are being considered in conjunction with local CFA management. “One option is for the relocation of the brigade to a new purpose-built station on Victorian Emergency Management Institute

This option is being considered due to a number of factors, including the size of the current site and the inability to meet all Occupational Health & Safety and access requirements. “CFA is committed to providing the community and brigade facilities that will adequately provide for all the brigade needs into the future.” When asked if she supported relocating the current brigade, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said: “As the local MP, I have been working closely with the Mount Macedon Fire Brigade to secure the funding the brigade needs to meet their operational needs.
“In this year’s state budget, I helped secure $1.6 million in funding for the brigade to re-develop their station. “If I earn the honour of serving my community for another four years, I will continue to work closely with the brigade to ensure they have a station that meets their needs.” The brigade has spent the past 18 months working on upgrade plans, including a collaboration with Melbourne University architecture students regarding the designs. The brigade’s headquarters has not been developed since before the Ash Wednesday fires.

Cash score for Sunbury sports By Jessica Micallef Sunbury Kangaroos football and netball players are set to benefit from upgrades to the Eric Boardman Reserve, regardless of who wins Saturday’s state election. After the state opposition last month pledged $500,000 to improve clubrooms at the reserve, Labor last week promised $2 million to revamp the pavilion should it win the election. There are no purpose-built female changerooms at the reserve despite record female participation numbers.
Sunbury MP Josh Bull welcomed the Labor funding announcement. “During my amateur footy days, I played at the reserve and I know first-hand the pavilion is ready for a refresh,” Mr Bull said. “With funding from a re-elected Labor government, we’ll make sure local athletes – men and women – have the facilities they need.” Sport Minister John Eren said the funding was vital for the local clubs. “Community sports are really about community spirit,” Mr Eren said.
“With this investment, we’re backing local sporting clubs and this local community.” Plans to transform McMahon Recreation Reserve into a major sports hub in Sunbury are progressing, with a new pavilion on the way and construction of a netball court starting late last month. The new netball facilities at McMahon Recreation Reserve will also include two light towers and fencing, with the pavilion to include changerooms, umpires rooms, storage, timekeepers facilities and unisex public toilets.
The Sunbury United Sporting Club and its soccer, cricket and rugby players are also set to benefit from a $1 million upgrade at Langama Park in Sunbury if Labor is re-elected on Saturday. Club president Paul DiBlasi said the funding was a huge boost. “It’s great to finally get some infrastructure … it’s long overdue,” Mr DiBlasi said. Hume council committed in its 2018-19 budget to spending $18 million in the next four years on upgrades to sports grounds around the municipality.

Students build skills for community Year 9 students from Sacred Heart College Kyneton have designed and built play equipment for a local coffee shop. As part of their LINCS (Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success) program, the students identified the need for play equipment at the Social Foundry cafe and took it on as their major project for 2018. College curriculum and transition director Joanne Holmes said the equipment was a great addition to the cafe.
“The play equipment is for when parents come to the cafe and it gives children something to do,” Ms Holmes said. “They’ve made tepees, a climbing frame and a hanging garden.” She said the students started developing ideas at the start of the school year and the design process began in term two. Ms Holmes said the LINCS program, which is an applied learning subject in year 9, gave students the chance to learn outside of the classroom.

A young driver was distracted for 10 seconds changing music on her car radio when she hit and killed a cyclist in Macedon, the County Court has been told. Emma Kent, 24, tearfully pleaded guilty in the court last Wednesday to dangerous driving causing death. Kent was trying to connect her phone’s Bluetooth to the car audio when she struck 57-year-old Gareth Davies on Black Forest Drive on December 10 last year. “That’s what I was doing that distracted me,” Kent told police after the crash. Mr Davies’ daughters sobbed in the courtroom as they recounted their loss. “In the first 24 hours after I found out, it felt like the world and my life was ending,” Rhea Davies told the court. “I cannot put into words the amount of complete, consuming rage I feel towards the accused.” She said that before the accident, they had been looking forward to visiting Wales for Christmas with their father. “My dad is permanently out of my life solely because of the actions of the accused in this crime.” Her younger sister, Ffion, said the memory of having to tell her grandmother of his death still haunted her. Kent’s defence said she had always pleaded guilty and was remorseful. “It could hardly be said she was unaffected,” he said. The defence called for a community corrections order, but the prosecution argued the offending was serious and deserved jail. Kent was remanded in custody for sentence on November 26.

A walk through history Plaques outlining historical information about Riddells Creek and its surrounds have been installed at Riddells Creek Lions Park. Installed throughout the park’s sensory and indigenous gardens, the plaques were a joint project of the Riddells Creek Social History Group and the park’s upgrade committee. History group president Mary Henry said the plaques incorporated important history of the town. “The social history group researched early history of Riddell to be depicted on 10 plaques,” Ms Henry said. “We tried to choose the most significant that would incorporate the development of the community from a farming district, the social life of the community and the impact of the
railways on the district.” Ms Henry said the plaques showcased the history of the Wurundjeri Tribe and John Carre Riddell, an early pioneer which Riddells Creek was named in hounour of. “We also did plaques on the Mechanics Hall … Samuel Amess, a farmer and building contractor who was elected mayor of Melbourne in 1869, the Campbell family who were early pioneers.” An information booklet about the history of the park is available to purchase for $5 at the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House. Cash lift for emergency services By Jessica Micallef Sunbury, Diggers Rest and Macedon Ranges emergency services have been given a boost after receiving grants valued at more than $800,000 for new equipment. More than six fire brigades will share the grants, as part of the state government’s $13.3 million Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program. Sunbury SES will receive $232,550 to replace an ageing medium rescue truck. Sunbury SES volunteer Jarrod Bell said the
funding was “massive” and that the truck being replaced was the oldest truck in the whole of SES Victoria. “This means we can have a truck better equipped with safety features,” he said. Mr Bell said the funding would let the Sunbury SES re-direct money it had raised from fundraisers towards buying other equipment and other upgrades. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed the funding. “Volunteers are at the heart of our emergency services,” she said.

“This grant will ensure they have the modern equipment they need to keep the local community safe.” The money is likely to be spent on the likes of vehicles and appliances, crew cab replacements and minor facilities. The Trentham, Diggers Rest, Langley-Barfold,
Woodend and Clarkefield and District CFAs and the Coliban Group of Fire Brigades will also benefit from funding. Under the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program, the state government matches every dollar contributed by local volunteer groups with a $2 co-contribution. Ms Thomas praised the efforts of emergency services volunteers. “I want to congratulate and thank our local volunteers for raising the money they have to secure the funding they needed for this great new equipment,” Ms Thomas said.
Greener pastures call Greg Webber has sold his business, Webbers Garden Centre in Riddells Creek, after nearly 42 years at the helm. Mr Webber opened his business to the public on August 31 1977, after reading an article on suburbs in the northwest and their expected rapid growth in population. “It was front page on a 1976 Herald Sun newspaper saying there would be 100,000 people living in Sunbury and Melton by the year 2000,” Mr Webber said. “These people would need gardens, would need plants.” Mr Webber, 70, said he credited his business’s success over the years to his dedication to customer service. “We offer superior service and are competitive on price,” Mr Webber said. “It’s a combination of range, volume, quality, price and service.” Mr Webber said it was time for him to
step back from his beloved business and give another family the opportunity to take the store into another generation of gardeners. He is urging all residents to continue supporting the business. The new owners will take over from November 22. Mr Webber plans to assist the new owners for a period of time, before “officially” retiring to travel. Jessica Micallef

Tasty win for winery By Jessica Micallef Tylden’s Pegeric Wines has had another taste of international success. Chris Cormack’s Pegeric Wines 2007 pinot noir won the trophy for the Best Wine with galbi (Korean grilled beef) at the 2018 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition. Now in its 10th year, the competition involved 60 judges from 13 countries who taste tested more than 2000 wines accompanied by a mix of eight Asian dishes. Mr Cormack said he was surprised at his winning results. “I was pretty amazed, especially since we are a small producer going up against some of the biggest wineries,” Mr Cormack said. “Just to win a medal is big.” Pegeric Wines has won eight trophies, 11 gold medals, 33 silver and 37 bronze since 2011. The company also took out first place at the Hong Kong event last year for the vegetable tempura trophy and prawn vindaloo trophy. Pegeric Wines has won trophies when paired with Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Korean dishes. Mr Cormack said he was setting his sights on winning first place with Vietnamese and Thai-inspired dishes at upcoming competitions. He established his winery in 1987 after studying viticulture and touring some of the best wine regions overseas. Libs pledge $6m for Holy Trinity By Jessica Micallef An elected Liberal government will commit $6 million to complete stage two of construction at Holy Trinity School in Sunbury. The new school, which will open at the beginning of the 2019 school year, has an expected enrolment of 500 students from Sunbury and surrounding areas. Stage one of the construction, which included classrooms, a multipurpose court and a grass play area, is still under construction and is expected to be completed by February 4.

School principal Krystine Hocking said stage two of the development will include a two-storey building, performing arts centre if possible, work spaces for teachers and students, a community centre for before and after school care and a tennis court.
Ms Hocking said she was grateful for the funding. “It’s a very generous offer,” Ms Hocking said. “It’s all about the kids, that’s the main message I am trying to get across.” The announcement comes after the state government last month promised $400 million to build new schools and upgrade existing ones if re-elected at Saturday’s election. The opposition announced it would match Labor’s pledge by spending $100 million every year for the next four years to build and upgrade non-government schools.
Opposition spokesman for education Tim Smith welcomed the funding. “That’s why we’ve announced a $400 million Catholic and Independent Schools Capital Fund, and we’ll be happy to provide $6 million of that to construct Holy Trinity School in Sunbury.” Liberal candidate for Sunbury Cassandra Marr said continuing the school’s construction was vital for the area. “Students who will attend Holy Trinity will greatly benefit from modern and contemporary facilities,” Ms Marr said.
Top talent holds court Music and singing has taken centre stage at Sunbury’s Ball Court Hotel. After 12 weeks of competition heats, season three of the open mic competition concluded with a bang when 10 local artists battled it out for the top prize on Wednesday. Event organiser Brian Henderson Ward said the grand finale was one for the ages. “The atmosphere was electric,” Mr Henderson Ward said. “It was a full house and the crowd was really respectful of artists.” Over the 12 weeks of the competition, one winner from each heat received a golden ticket for a place in the final. Competition winner and Sunbury resident Jake Halfhyde said he was shocked at his success. “It was definitely a surprise,” Mr Halfhyde said. “It’s nice to get some recognition.”
Mr Halfhyde said he has been playing the guitar for a while but still gets nervous performing to a big crowd. He hopes to release his own music sometime early next year. Jessica Micallef

A vitally important piece of infrastructure has taken shape in Melbourne’s west. Construction of the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is running to schedule and the building will be handed over to Western Health on March 30 next year. The $200 million building will include a total of 237 beds in new and refurbished accommodation, 20 maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four theatres and additional clinics. Western Health divisional director women’s and children’s services, Adele Mollo, said the new facility has a number of exciting features. “We’re creating a family-centred environment and an environment for women, children and babies that facilitates best care,” she said. “The most exciting part about that is for the first time in a really long time across the state, we’ll see a brand new neonatal intensive care unit. “So we’ll be increasing two neonatal intensive care beds and adding additional special care nursery beds. That enables women and their babies to be kept together.” Sunshine Hospital maternity staff members have been pushed to their limits in recent months, with the hospital delivering a record number of babies. Ms Mollo said the new facility will vastly expand the hospital’s capabilities. “This gives us the ability to birth up to 7020 babies a year,” she said. “This year we birthed nearly 5,800 and we had a couple of record months where we had 500 babies born. That’s enormous for us. “Our current infrastructure is constrained

In recent weeks focus on site has shifted to fit-out activities with sub-contractors on site into the late evening and weekends. In July, the project reached a milestone of two million man hours. Western Health senior operations project manager Sue Valentine said the building has been designed to provide convenient flow between it and the main hospital campus. “The main thing about the design of the building is that it’s still part of the main Sunshine Hospital campus,” Ms Valentine said.

The design of the interior is done in such a way that the patients, physicians and families can comfortably move through the building and staff can flow between the main campus and Joan Kirner.” Minister for Health Jill Hennessy said it was exciting to see the building taking shape. “After celebrating the building’s topping out earlier this year, we can now see the façade and interior of this world class hospital quickly taking shape,” Ms Hennessy said. “When it opens next year, women and children in the west will no longer need to travel far from home to get the best possible care in the very best facilities. “Joan Kirner fought passionately to improve healthcare for the women and children of the West – and she would be so proud that her legacy will live on forever in this new hospital.”

I have lived in Sunbury since 1982 and in those days you knew almost everyone. You could ride your horse around town and over the railway bridge, but this is no longer possible due to the number of people now living here. What are you passionate about? I love art, gardening, health, Sunbury radio 99.3FM, yoga, meditation and music. Tell us about your involvement with Sunbury radio 99.3FM. I present the healthy lifestyle show on a Sunday. It covers what’s going on in Sunbury and Melbourne. I talk about gardening with advice on good things to plant and when to plant them, with details on the food swap where you can swap your excess fruit and vegetables. Lina from Little Green Thumbs has spoken about how the children can get involved with growing plants. We like to invite as many Sunbury personalities as possible. We talk about cooking, juicing, and always have a recipe or two to share with listeners. My daughter Susan and granddaughter Sarah often come along to my program to provide a
younger persons point of view. They also play some great modern music. What is your role at the radio? I run a healthy lifestyle show on a Sunday afternoon between 2-3pm. What other hats do you wear in the community? I belong to the Sunbury bowling club, and play badminton. In my younger days I belonged to St Johns Ambulance, played tennis, squash, taught yoga and meditation, ran a B&B and wellness centre and sang with two Sunbury choirs. What is the best thing about Sunbury? It’s a very sporting community. There are lots of clubs you can join, plenty of restaurants, cafes and some good parks for the kids. If you could change anything about the area what would it be? Provide safe bike tracks on the nature strips alongside the roads. I would turn Evans Street and O’Shanassy Street into a shopping mall with underground carparking.

By Tara Murray A third straight loss has all but ended Gisborne’s hopes of making the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket North West B T20 final. While the fifth-placed Dragons head into the final round equal on points with the three teams above them on the ladder, the Dragons percentage is well below those teams. With two of those clubs playing each other in the final round, the Dragons would need some luck to go their way against ladder leaders EMP/Willy Congs. On Sunday, the Dragons took just six players to Geelong 2, another side looking to play finals. Brianna Woodburn starred with the bat for the Dragons, making her highest score, 82 not out, as they made 3-110 from their 20 overs. With only six in the field it was always going to be a tough ask for the Dragons. Geelong didn’t waste any time getting the job done, making the runs in the 11th over. Geelong finished 0-111. Sue Heussi made 51 not out, while Chloe Smith finished 42 not out. The bowling figures were tough reading for the Dragons, with Woodburn the tightest bowler, conceding 14 runs from her two overs. In other results, Melton Centrals slipped out of the top two as they were beaten by Coburg 2. Former Melton premier star Stephanie Theodore made 68 not for Coburg. Caroline Springs caused the upset of the round, knocking off ladder leaders EMP Willy/Congs. Greenvale Kangaroos proved no match for St Anthonys.
Malmsbury remains undefeated in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield Sub-District Firsts. Needing 200 for victory against Kyneton, Malmsbury made the runs with plenty of time remaining. It finished 5-205 with captain Matthew Cox on 85 not out. Chris Ganim was also unbeaten with 46 not out. Malmsbury sits on top of the ladder, with three wins and a draw. St Anthonys chased down Lancefield’s total of 209 in their match. The Saints finished 7-211, moving them up to second on the ladder. It was a similar case for both Sunbury United and Rupertswood in their games. United had the biggest chase on its hands, with Macedon making 9-248 on day one. United only just got the job done, finishing 7-252. Thomas Balmer top scored with 61 at the top of the order. Daniel Trotta and Stephen Coleman took three wickets each for Macedon. Rupertswood ensured Blackwood remained without a win. Blackwood made a more than respectable 208 on day one, but it wasn’t enough with Rupertswood making 7-222. Jayden Swallow top scored with 72, one short of his highest score. In the close competition, third through to seventh are on equal points.

It was a tough day for East Sunbury on and off the cricket pitch on Saturday. While the Thunder fell short against Rupertswood in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts, that was quickly thrust to the back of their minds when news came through that former captain-coach Jessy Carroll had died. Carroll’s battle with cancer was well publicised, with not just the Thunder but the local community getting behind him and his family. Thunder coach Rob Mannion said it was a tough time for the club. It was through Carroll’s illness that Mannion became involved at the club. “I appreciate what he did for me, as much as what I did for him,” he said. “He was an inspiration.” Mannion said for many of the playing group, their minds had been on Carroll during the game against Rupertswood.
Rupo had made 252 on day one of the match. They were able to bowl the Thunder out for 129. Alec Boorsma top scored for the Thunder with 34. Mannion said it wasn’t all bad news. “We just got bogged down a little bit,” he said. “It did give the young kids the chance to get a decent hit. “Alec has just turned 18, Shoey [Luke Shoesmith] is 17 and Evan [Wilkins] is just 17 and batted for quite a while. “We had been hoping to bat the overs out. It’s the first time we haven’t been able to do that.” Fifteen year-old Blake Watson also made his debut, contributing with two wickets on day one before spending a bit of time at the crease on Saturday. Mannion said the young players were starting to build a strong future. “Without Keith [Osborne] the average age on Saturday was about 21.

The Sunbury Kangaroos have named their first two recruits for next year’s Essendon District Football League season. The Kangaroos announced that Matt Quigley would join the club from St Albans, where he won best and fairests and gained representative honours. He had previously played with Werribee in the VFL. Mick Kilty has joined the Kangaroos from Diggers Rest and will be a playing assistant coach. Kilty is a noted goalkicker, topping Diggers Rest’s goalkicking twice.
By Tara Murray Sunbury has claimed its first win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts season in fine fashion. After setting Romsey a target of 243 for victory on the back of some solid batting from its younger brigade the previous weekend, Sunbury’s more experienced bowlers did the job on Saturday. In a devastating opening spell by Jason McGowan and Heath Boffey, the Roar had Romsey in dire straits at 5-2. Sunbury maintained the pressure to bowl Romsey out for just 82. For Roar captain-coach Brad Hunter, it was the win the side had been working towards. “We had been building for the last couple of weeks and knew a win wasn’t far away,” he said. “It was a good feeling for the young kids to experience that success.” Hunter said the Roar got a significant boost from having an extra experienced bowler to keep the pressure on once the opening bowlers had delivered their overs. And the Roar couldn’t have asked for a better man for the job, with Jason McGann returning to the side. McGann, one of the competition’s best players, retired at the end of last season. “We needed a third bowler who can bowl the right line and hit the right spot,” Hunter said. “Jason wants to play the rest of the season, but we’ll see how his body holds up. “He’s on light duties and will sometimes only play as a batsman and may not play every game.” McGann finished with three wickets, as did Boffey, while McGowan took four wickets. While the experienced players got the job done with the ball, Hunter was quick to praise the batting efforts of Dylan Landt and Lachlan and Stephen Treweek, who set up the win on day one. In its second innings, Romsey finished on 2-196, with Matthew Milne making 81. Hunter said the Roar had used Romsey’s second innings to give the side’s younger players opportunities. “We didn’t try and go for the outright win,” he said. “We’re not in a position this season to be going for outright wins. AFL Goldfields has appointed Kim Bailey as its netball manager for next season. Bailey previously held the role and was involved with AFL Goldfields for four years before moving to Netball Victoria earlier this year as an umpire and coach education manager. Bailey decided she liked a more hands-on role than the Netball Victoria job offered. Grace Bibby, who took on the netball manager role this year, will take on another role within AFL Goldfields next year.

Players faced tough winds on Saturday as they fought for Romsey Golf Club’s monthly medal. Golfers had struggled to break handicap in recent weeks – and that trend continued on Saturday. Mal Mottram took out the medal from Rob Rea, Les Gaunt and then Hugh Drummond. Elaine Scanlon won the women’s monthly medal. The club will this weekend hold the Romsey Open, with pairs events on Saturday and the 24-hole stroke event on Sunday. This year, the open has been renamed to honour long-term member, committee member and captain Graeme Clement.

Cannons players on the radar for AFL draft The Calder Cannons are hoping that at least four, if not more of its players are taken in the AFL drafts next week. While the Cannons didn’t have the best year in the win-loss column, a number of players have put themselves on the radar of AFL clubs. The national draft will be held over Thursday night and Friday, before the rookie draft later on Friday. Cannons’ coach Ross Smith said they would be happy to get four players chosen and ecstatic if a couple of others found their way onto AFL lists. Midfielder Rhylee West seems the most likely to be selected. The likely frontrunner appears to be the Western Bulldogs, who can take him under the father-son rule. Rhylee’s father, Bulldogs’
legend Scott West, played more than 300 games for the club. Smith said West was in the Jack Viney mould of player. Curtis Taylor appears to be the next on the list, with the Keilor product thriving at both TAC Cup and Metro level. “Curtis has had a good year,” Smith said. “Whether it’s in the midfield or forward he’s equally as good and you can say the same about Rhylee for his size. “I’d say Curtis is in the [Mark] LeCras type of player.” Smith said the Cannons were still hopeful that co-captain Jack Bytel would get selected despite a back injury derailing his year. Smith said without the injury, Bytel would have likely been a high pick.
“He can play back, mid and forward,” Smith said. “He was really good this year. He was always at training and in the coaches box with me on the weekend. “There are some concerns with his back. He was seen as a first round pick, but will slip further down.” Bytel’s good mate and co-captain Mitch Podhajski is the other the Cannons believe is a good chance of being selected. Podhajski missed out on being drafted last year and put his head down this season, taking out the Cannons’ best and fairest award. He also played several VFL matches for Coburg. “I don’t think I’ve seen a better leader at his age take control of a group,” Smith said. “He was instrumental in the development of our
group. “He played off half-back last year and as a forward and mid this year. I find it hard to believe he played as a back, as he played so well as a forward and mid. “He’s really smart and in the mould of a modern day midfielder.” Lachlan Sholl, Sam Graham, Ty Browning and Jake Riccardi are the other players who could be drafted or rookie listed. Daniel Hanna could be drafted or selected by Essendon where he is part of the club’s Next-Generation Academy. Possible Essendon father-son Mason Fletcher decided not to nominate for the drafts, after missing most of season through injury. Living in the fast lane By Tara Murray Liam Quinlivan is hoping home ground advantage will help him at the inaugural Freestyle BMX National Championships next weekend. While Quinlivan has been born and raised in Sunbury, the Rampfest Indoor Skate Park in Braybrook, where the championships are being held, is one of the skate parks he frequents often. He said to have championships at that location is pretty special. “Having a National Championship honestly feels awesome,” he said “It’s really good for the BMX scene which has been a little bit slow and now hopefully it really picks up. “Braybrook is a good location, it’s one of my locals parks. I train there a lot.” Quinlivan got into BMX after following his brother down to the Sunbury skate park, where he saw someone do a flip and thought “it was the coolest thing ever”.
From there his passion has grown and seen him travel the world to compete. This year he took six months off work as a boilermaker to train and compete, returning from China last week. “It’s pretty difficult in Australia with the population being so small,” he said. “I’ve had a decent level of success, but the judging and level of riding is tough, that’s the sport. “I want to keep getting better.” With the sport to be part of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, riding is set to become even more competitive. The 21-year-old said he would love to make the Australian team for the Olympics, whether it be this time around or in the future. “The Olympics are a massive goal,” he said. “I think I have a chance to make the team. For me it’s 100 per cent or nothing. “I definitely have lots to prove. I know what I have and I know what I can bring and I’m just going to bring it.”

Quinlivan knows he will have a challenge ahead of him next weekend, but he’s up for it. “Roughly, at the nationals you’ll have 40 to 50 people. The level of riding is really high, so it makes it interesting. “I’ve competed against some of them before. You have the Australian team like Logan Martin and Brandon Loupos, Jake Wallwork, Kyle Baldock and Alec Danelutti, they’re all absolute shredders of riders so they’re definitely going to be killing it but we’ll just see who rides best on the day. “I’m feeling really good, I put in a lot of work this year, I’m feeling fit, I’m feeling strong and I know most of these lines and what I can do, so hopefully I bring fire to this competition.” Quinlivan said ultimately he would love to be able to make a living from BMX and be an inspiration for those wanting to get into the sport. “Currently in Australia it’s not really big with sponsorship except right at the top. “I’ll keep on training the best I can.”
Kyneton Tigers found another level in the final quarter to beat Myrtleford Saints in the Country Basketball League women’s north-east competition. Looking to continue the momentum they had built in recent weeks, the Tigers were challenged until eventually winning 65-59. The sides traded the lead throughout the first half. The Tigers trailed by as many as seven points in the third quarter before getting back on level terms. But the Saints hit the last three points of the term to take the lead. The Tigers regained the lead early in the final quarter and then took the margin out to 11 points. As she did the previous week, Brooke Mangan stepped up late for scoreboard impact. While the Saints made one last run, the Tigers’ lead was sufficient to ensure they got the victory. Mangan top-scored with 19 points, while her sister, Jessica Mangan, scored 12. The win was the Tigers fifth in a row. This week they will face top side, Bendigo Braves, who are yet to lose a match. The men’s team, which hasn’t played the past two weekends, will also face the Braves on Saturday night. Tara Murray
