A time to remember Thousands of people are expected to gather in the Macedon Ranges to commemorate Remembrance Day. A dusk service to celebrate the centenary of the Armistice of World War I will be held on Saturday, November 10 at Woodend’s Wall of Remembrance on the Avenue of Honour. Starting at 7.30pm, the event is organised by the Mount Macedon Anzac Day dawn service committee as a special commemoration of this historical occasion. People are encouraged to bring their own fold-up chairs. A Remembrance Day service will be held the following day at 10am at the RSL Woodend sub-branch at 32 Anslow Street. More than half a million poppies will be sold in the annual Poppy Appeal to raise funds for servicemen and women in need. RSL Victoria appeals manager Peter Smith said the Poppy Appeal was a cause that resonates with all Australians. “It reminds us all that we need to focus on the next generation of men and women who have served Australia, and who may need help finding their feet following their career in the Australian Defence Forces,” Mr Smith said. Poppies are available from the RSL, Woolworths or Officeworks stores across Victoria or volunteers throughout November.

Sunbury hospital pledge By Jessica Micallef A re-elected Andrews Labor government will upgrade the Sunbury Day hospital, as part of a $675 million election pledge to build and upgrade 10 community hospitals in Victorian suburbs and regional towns. The upgrade will allow the Sunbury hospital to provide greater capacity for more urgent care services to be delivered after hours. The new hospital will be equipped with second and third tier services, including dental and day surgery, and will expand on pathology,

medical imaging and pharmacy services. The community hospital plan will include some land acquisition for further expansion. Member for Sunbury Josh Bull said the community hospital announcement was a huge win for residents. “The Liberals have let down our local community – only Labor will invest in the vital services like a new community hospital, which will make a real difference to the lives of Sunbury locals,” Mr Bull said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the new hospitals would provide locals with around-the-clock care without having to travel far from home. “Nothing is more important than having the peace of mind that when a loved one gets sick, care is just around the corner,” Mr Andrews said. In another boost for local healthcare, Gisborne Ambulance Station is set to be upgraded as part of a $25 million package to build and upgrade stations across the state.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the new station upgrade would help benefit paramedics in the Macedon area. “Paramedics across the Macedon Ranges are there when we need them – and with an upgraded and modern station in Gisborne, we’re backing our paramedics so they can do what they do best – that’s saving lives,” Ms Thomas said. Design and planning work for the Sunbury community hospital will begin next year, with works to be completed in 2023, if Labor is re-elected.

Cash secured for sport precinct By Jessica Micallef A regional sports precinct will go ahead in the Macedon Ranges, regardless of who wins this month’s state election. A week after the Labor government pledged $11.6 million for an outdoor sports precinct, the opposition has promised $15 million to build a Macedon Ranges Sports Hub and the New Gisborne Regional Sports Field. The indoor sports hub will be used for sporting clubs, a dance studio and an auditorium for large events. The indoor facility can also be used for outdoor sports. surfaces for football, cricket and soccer, netball and tennis courts, outdoor recreation spaces and a brand new pavilion. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said he was looking forward to providing grassroots-level sports with new facilities. “Only a Liberal Nationals government will provide our community sports clubs with the backing they need to get back in control and

build the facilities they need to support local population growth,” Mr Guy said. Liberal candidate for Macedon Amanda Millar said the sport precinct will help give the growing population in the Macedon area more facilities to work with. “In the Macedon Ranges, local population has grown by around 10,000 people in the last decade, but there’s been no extra funding for local sport clubs to cater for this growth,” Ms Millar said. “There’s more work to get done but this is a good start to get back in control of the pressure local population growth has put on community sport.” Sports precinct advocate Helen Sankey said

the election promise made by both parties was a huge win for the Macedon community. “It’s been something we’ve aimed for since 2006,” Ms Sankey said. “We had to keep knocking back children because we didn’t have the facilities. “We are confident it is secured … The level of support from the state government is enormous.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced last week that Dixon Field in Gisborne will receive $220,000 if Labor is re-elected. The funding will go towards a pavilion re-development, which will create two gender neutral changerooms.

Libs in cash pledge for St Ambrose St Ambrose Parish Primary School in Woodend will get a $1.5 million upgrade if the Liberal Party wins this month’s state election. Opposition education spokesman Tim Smith said the funding, part of the Liberals’ commitment of $400 million to upgrade non-government schools, was a huge win for the school. “I am delighted to be able to announce this $1.5 million investment in St Ambrose School,” Mr Smith said. “We want to work with non-government schools to give all Victorian families choice in education.” School principal Desmond Noack welcomed the commitment, saying funding was essential to ensure the school’s pupils received the best possible education. “The funding will provide students with the facilities they need,” Mr Noack said. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said that with population growth limiting parent choices of schools, it had never been more important to support all three tiers of the school system across the state. “I will get back in control of education by building the schools and classrooms we need, whether they be Catholic, independent or government schools,” Mr Guy said.

A keen eye for design A Lancefield resident’s flair for fashion has won a first-placed prize at the recent Fashion Awards Australia. One of Hayley Shanahan’s four designs won the TAFE long gown section. The dress showcased her detailed beading, embroidery and technical work. Ms Shanahan, who doesn’t work in the fashion industry, said she began sewing by making her daughter’s dance and gymnastics costumes. She said attending the awards night was a great experience. “It was a wonderful experience … I had a go to see what would happen. I wasn’t confident but winning was an added bonus,” Ms Shanahan said. Ms Shanahan said she spent 80 hours on hand beading the winning gown. Her designs were among hundreds of outfits paraded down the catwalk at last month’s event in Hoppers Crossing. Cup is vintage Kyneton A slice of history has galloped into Kyneton Museum. A replica of the 1958 Kyneton Cup will be exhibited at the museum until January. Country Racing Victoria events and operations manager Lisa Evans said the cup display highlighted an important part of Kyneton’s past. She said the timing couldn’t be better, with ticket sales for the Kyneton Cup – to be run on November 7 – going through the roof and she was expecting a big turn-out. “We have excellent presales at the moment and are expecting 4500 people,� Ms Evans said.

Celebrating 60 years since the 1958 Kyneton Cup, the replica cup is part of the Equus exhibition, which brings together photographs, original paintings and historical gear and equipment such as side-saddles, riding boots and grooming tools. The exhibition is aimed at shining a light on the unique relationship between horse and human, showcasing the evolution of equestrian fashion and man’s reliance on the horse in agriculture and transport. Ranges mining bid withdrawn By Jessica Micallef An application for a mining exploration licence in the Macedon Ranges has been withdrawn. Perth-based company Macedon Resources last month withdrew its application for low-impact exploration in an area east of Lancefield and Romsey. An online petition against the licence, led by Romsey resident and comedian Tom Gleeson, received more than 5000 signatures in two days. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas described

the application withdrawal as a “terrific outcome”. “The community has spoken and the application for a mining exploration licence in the Macedon Ranges has been withdrawn,” Ms Thomas said. The application, submitted to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in September, sought permission for exploration work including rock chip sampling and analysis, geological mapping and low-impact exploration drilling in selected locations within a 234-square-kilometre area

in the next two years. Macedon Resources director Steven Standings previously told Star Weekly that if a target was discovered, exploration and drilling could have continued for up to five years. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said at the time

of the application that this was the third application for mining explorations this year in the area. She said the state government had adopted its Helping Victoria Grow – Extractive Resources Strategy in June, aiming to give priority to extractive industries and to identify industry interest areas. “However, the Macedon Ranges has recently been declared a distinctive area in Victoria protecting it from development,” she said. “It’s disconcerting that messages coming through are confusing.”

Romsey from the heart Romsey’s Get Snapping Photo competition has captured the hearts of local residents. Romsey resident Sandy Webb placed second in the competition and said she was surprised at her winning result. “A lot of the photos in the competition were professionally done. Mine was done from the heart,” Ms Webb said. Her winning photograph showcased the woolly and feathered animals she has on her farm in Romsey. “I portrayed my love for animals [in the photo],” Ms Webb said. “There were sheep, duck, chickens … it was one big happy family, walking along in one straight line.” Webb said she never had an interest in photography but wanted to portray to everyone what her home meant to her in her photograph. “It was great to showcase how beautiful our township is,” Ms Webb said.

Sunbury set to shine Sunbury StreetLife Festival is back for another year. The fun-filled event, which began five years ago, helps to grow, acknowledge and support local businesses. Head of volunteers for Sunbury StreetLife Festival Sharyn Snook said it was great fun for people of all ages. “It is a vibrant, free, community event that offers something for everyone with amazing local businesses, live on stage entertainment, children’s activities and hands-on activities,” Ms Snook said. “It celebrates everything local … and is an example of the community and business owners working together to celebrate the traditional main street.”

She said the festival was created to showcase local businesses. “The aim was formed from two passionate small home-based business owners to draw more people into Sunbury and promote the amazing history, businesses and location we have here,” Ms Snook said. Since the festival began, attendance has grown. Ms Snook is hoping for a big turnout again this year. “The last couple of years we estimate numbers between 8000 and 10,000 attendees.” The event will be held on Sunday, November 18 between 10am and 3pm on O’Shanassy Street and Brook Street, Sunbury. Kyneton in a class of its own By Jessica Micallef School students in Kyneton now have access to first-rate classrooms and facilities with the opening of the new Kyneton Primary School. Minster for Education James Merlino and Macedon MP Mary-Ann Thomas last week joined students on a tour of the new $11.5 million primary school, located on a 3.5-hectare site on Edgecombe Street, close to Kyneton Secondary College.

The new school comprises three buildings, playgrounds and outdoor spaces. It includes flexible classrooms, specialist learning facilities for physical education, music, art, a multi-purpose room, canteen

and kitchen, as well as outdoor learning areas. Mr Merlino said the Kyneton Primary School’s improved environment would also improve learning. “Every student in Victoria deserves access to a great local school because we know that you can’t get a first-rate education in third-rate classrooms,” Mr Merlino said. “For too long students and teachers at Kyneton Primary School were stuck using substandard facilities – and we have now built

this great local school that the local community deserves.” The new school is part of the Kyneton Education Precinct, which brings together early years to VCE in one place. Ms Thomas said the new services are a great addition for the students. “It’s terrific to see first-hand what students at Kyneton Primary School will get out of their modern and state-of-the art facilities,” Ms Thomas said.

Purple and proud A group of students ready to start at Sunbury’s newest school next year were excited to get a sneak peek at their school uniform. Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School’s new uniform incorporates the colour palette of purple, teal and gold – colours that are represented in the school’s logo and building design. The inspiration for the main colour purple came from the small chocolate lily – a native grassland wildflower that was found on the land the school was built on. School principal Krystine Hocking said it was a smart-looking uniform that her pupils can have pride in wearing. Ms Hocking said the new buildings were on track for completion and teacher appointments have been finalised. She is looking forward to introducing staff to her pupils over the coming weeks. “I am passionate about nurturing an innovative learning environment, that caters for the diverse needs of all students, ensuring

that all achievements are celebrated,” Ms Hocking said. “When interviewing and appointing our teachers, I was looking for educators who share this passion.” Enrolments are still being taken for Holy Trinity. Besides music, I am passionate about the beautiful animals I have in my life, a golden retriever and two border collies. I stopped horse riding when I entered VCASS (Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School) in 2013, but I would definitely love to start riding again.

Tell us how you started playing the French horn.

What does your typical week look like (rehearsals etc)?

I have been playing French horn since I was nine years old, and I began while at Mowbray College in Melton. Since year 7, I have been studying at VCASS under the tuition of Linda Hewett.

At school, our days are spent half in normal academic classes and the other half of the day is spent in specialist classes, which for me are music classes focusing on my VCE music subjects, music styles and composition and music investigations.

What extra-curricular musical performances have you done? I have been a part of Melbourne Youth Orchestras throughout my musical development, and for the past two years I have been a part of its flagship orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra. These rehearsals take place on Saturdays. Some of us in the orchestra were

The next couple of years will involve further musical study at university on French horn, which will hopefully mould me to become a professional orchestral musician in the future.

What would people be surprised to learn about Audrey Witmore? I love immersing myself in the other aspects of Melbourne’s art scene, especially going to NGV exhibitions and ballet performances. Getting outdoors and experiencing different natural environments.

Two former stars are returning home to Gisborne next season. The Bulldogs announced last week that former captain Casey Summerfield and former league best and fairest winner Scott Walsh would be back at the club next year. The two spent the past three years at Macedon and Riddell respectively and both were standouts in the Riddell District Football League competition. The signings come after the club announced that former AFL-listed player Pat McKenna would be returning to the Bulldogs. Gisborne has re-signed a number of key players, including the top three in their best and fairest award this year.

By Tara Murray Sunbury came away with all 18 points thanks to a massive win against Flemington-Kensington in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. After claiming all but one point the week before, Sunbury continued its good form on Saturday, winning 104 (18)-66 (0) at home. Lee Wesley’s rink won 34-18, while Mark Cowan’s rink had a big win for a second straight week thanks to a 27-13 scoreline. Carla Krizanic’s rink won 22-18 and Todd Trewarne’s rink came from behind to win 21-17. Sunbury’s David Glennon said that for much of the day, it looked like the side would win only three rinks. “Todd was down all game … in the second and third last rounds they picked up nine shots to hit the lead for the first time,” he said. “It was a nice turnaround for Todd’s rink. They didn’t look like winning all day.” Glennon said Lisa Trewarne and Paul Long, who were in Wesley’s rink, and Marc Bullows, who was in Cowan’s rink, were the day’s standouts. The win and other results means Sunbury is up to second on the ladder, behind only undefeated Moonee Valley. Sunbury will get a first-hand look at Moonee Valley this weekend. “We will see where we are at,” Glennon said. “If we could get a big win, we could move to top.” Four of Sunbury’s six sides had wins on Saturday, including its third side, which won by 70 shots. The women’s side lost mid-week to Werribee 63 (14)-49 (2).

The Sunbury Lions have announced that Brennan brothers, Ben and Leigh, will join the Ballarat Football League club next season. The brothers have both spent the past few years at St Albans in the Western Region Football League, having started their careers at Rupertswood. Leigh Brennan was just the second player to play 200 games for Rupertswood and won a number of club goalkicking awards. The Lions have also announced the re-signing of captain Andrew Duhau, Greg Hay, Allan O’Connor, Corey Hansen, Will Healy, and Reece and Nathan Wood. Young guns put Riddell on solid ground Riddell’s youngsters are making the difference in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield District Firsts competition. Riddell did not know what to expect this season after it dropped down a division in the off season due to losing most of its line-up. However, after five games, Riddell is the only undefeated team in its division. Riddell captain Daniel Fisk said the development of their younger players – including Kyle Whitehurst, Alex Ryan and Harry Fisher – was behind such a good start to the season. “They are really coming of age,” he said. “All three of them are talented youngsters and all three have exceeded expectations. “They have come along a lot quicker than we thought they would.” Riddell made 9-187, including Michael

Sammut top scoring with 62, while Whitehurst made a quick-fire 41. Fisk said they were happy with that score. “We said we wanted 200 at the start,” he said. “In the end we were happy with 180.” Jack Dillon was the pick of the bowlers for the Thunder with three wickets. Fisk said they always felt like the game was in their control. “The game was always ours to lose with the runs on the board,” he said. Thunder ran out of overs, finishing 4-144. Dillon completed a good all round game, finishing 67 not out at the top of the order. Matthew Lloyd took two wickets, while Whitehurst and Fisk took the other wickets. Fisk said they will get a better indication of where they sit in the next two matches. They face other frontrunners St Anthonys

and Rupertswood as the two-day matches begin. “Rupo and St Anthonys are two of the better sides and those games will show us where we’re at,” Fisk said. In other matches, Rupertswood suffered its first loss of the season, against Ashfield. Ashfield made 6-182 from its overs with Ethan Travers making 79 not out. Rupo fell just short, all out for 173 with eight balls remaining. Captain-coach Andrew Pizaro top scored with 43 not out. St Anthonys returned to the winners’ list with a big win against Eynesbury Eagles, while Bacchus Marsh was too good for Gisborne. There were no matches in the Jensen ShieldSub Districts Firsts. Beaut recruits for Lions By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions’ campaign to add key position players has started well, with the club signing Leigh and Ben Brennan. The brothers, who originally played with Rupertswood, come to the Lions having spent time with St Albans in the Western Region Football League in the past few years. New Lions’ coach Travis Hodgson said they would help fill key position spots. “They obviously know people at Sunbury and they are highly regarded,” he said. “Once we sounded them out, they were looking for a change and it was a good fit. “We expect to use Leigh up forward and Ben down back. “Ben has shown he can switch forward – he kicked four goals in his last game for St Albans.” Hodgson said they were hopeful of signing at least another key position type. He said that would allow more flexibility and provide options on where to play Grant Valles. “One of the reasons we rate Grant so highly is he can play both ends of the ground,” Hodgson said. “Sometimes this year, they didn’t have a choice where to play him. “Hopefully, we’ll have more say on what we can do with him and utilise him a bit better.” While the Lions have added the Brennan brothers, the focus has been on re-signing their current playing group. The Lions have lost several players in the past two off seasons. Among those the Lions have re-signed are Andrew Duhau, Greg Hay, Lachie Bramble, Allan O’Connor, Corey Hansen, Will Healy and Reece and Nathan Wood. “We had 41 players play senior football this year and the majority have re-signed,” Hodgson said. “We may have lost one or two players. Everyone we get in now strengthens the side and we’re confident of getting a couple more players. “It’s about making sure we are getting the right types.” As well as looking at a getting another key position player, Hodgson said the Lions were looking at possibly getting another quality midfielder. It would be a bonus, with young midfielder Mitch Conn committing to the Lions full-time next year. This year he juggled playing with the Lions and playing with Coburg in the VFL. “Mitch pulled the pin at Coburg,” Hodgson said. “He’s a good player and played some really good football for us.”

The Lions will start their pre-season on November 14. Meanwhile, the Lions have announced that Corey Hansen will coach the under-18.5s side next year. He takes over from Tony Lucas, who took the side to a grand final.

Hodgson said Hansen was the right fit for the playing group. “Tony did a great job, but he didn’t want to continue,” he said. “It creates an opportunity for Corey to pick up a great group and it’s a good fit.”

Women’s footy for Romsey Romsey is making the move into women’s football next season. With the growth of female football and a number of interested players, the Redbacks are considering as many as four sides next season from women’s through to under-13s. Redbacks junior president Adam Rademaker said the idea of female sides at the club had been in the works for a couple of years after one of their star junior players had to go elsewhere to play after under-14s as she could no longer play with the boys. Madison Prespakis, who was selected at pick three in the AFLW draft last week, was already winning best and fairests while at the Redbacks. “I coached the under-16 boys way back in 2015,” Rademaker said. “Maddy wasn’t allowed to play with us after under-14s and it meant she had to go elsewhere to play. She’d played under-9s through to under-14s. “That year she was my assistant coach and runner so she could stay involved.” The Redbacks would like to have an under-13, under-15, under-18 and women’s sides next year. Rademaker said the under-18 and women’s sides were the most likely to get up. “We’ve had strong interest in those areas,” he said. “We’ve had a bit of interest in the under-13s as well. We’ve got a couple of players that are likely to come back as well [from other clubs].” Rademaker said anyone interested in playing at the club can come down and have a try. They were also looking for coaches. The club has set up an extensive pre-season program to help prospective players get ready to play football. The program will run from November 11 to December 14, with more training sessions in the new year. As part of the program, AFLW star Bianca Jakobsson will take a session, while David Newett and Malcolm Bangs, who both have AFL coaching experience, will help out with some sessions. Dragons’ fire extinguished By Tara Murray Gisborne has been given a reality check in a Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Premier Firsts top-of-the-table clash. Facing the only other undefeated side, Bacchus Marsh, the Dragons were made to pay for below par performances with the bat and ball. Dragons coach Glenn Waites said Bacchus Marsh showed why it is the benchmark of the competition. “We didn’t bowl great and bowled short early on and didn’t bowl to the fields,” he said. “And then we weren’t great with the bat. “The boys copped a reality check “We know they are the benchmark. We’ve learnt some things from the game and we would rather beat them later in the season.” The Bulls made 8-198 from their overs, with skipper James Lidgett hitting 100. He and Alex Porter put on a 142-run partnership for the second wicket. Waites was full of praise for Lidgett. “He is a gun and he could still be playing Premier first XI cricket,” he said. “We knew if we didn’t remove Lidgett, they would make a reasonable score.” Jakson Knight took three wickets and Recordo Gordon snared two. Waites said the Dragons thought that if they could keep the Bulls to under 220, it would be a reasonable effort. The Dragons’ batsmen failed to deliver,

scraping to 9-154. Their young guns helped add some late runs, but not enough. Waites said the younger guys stood up – and that was something positive to come out of the game. “Joel Garbutt batted really well, making 30, and also bowled well,” he said. “Jayben Bannan batted well in his first bat in the McIntyre Cup. “Lachlan Shore was confident in his first hit, as well. “With a few injuries they’re getting opportunities.” With the Dragons already missing three players out of the side, Daniel Trevillian hurt his hamstring during the game. The loss sees the side slip to third on the ladder, behind the Bulls and Romsey. Waites said they were happy with how they were tracking at this stage. He said they were looking forward to turning their attention to the two-day format that starts this weekend. They will face the winless Wallan. “When it comes down to it and the whips are cracking, the longer format wins you finals,” Waites said. In other results, Wallan fell just short of its first win against Sunbury United. The Magpies made 226, with United hitting the winning runs with three balls to spare. United finished on 7-227. Woodend overcame being 6-43 to beat Sunbury. Woodend made 7-153 in reply to Sunbury’s 6-148. Romsey defeated Diggers Rest Bulla.
