Hume split still on: Guy By Jessica Micallef A new Sunbury council would give residents more control over planning and population growth, according to the state opposition. On the eve of the state election, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy campaigned in Sunbury last week, reiterating his stance to separate Sunbury from Hume. Mr Guy also released the proposed border of the new council – similar plans to those previously released. Mr Guy is confident splitting Sunbury from Hume will help control population growth and
improve services. “A Liberal Nationals government will create a Sunbury council so local people can have more control about local population growth and infrastructure and services,” Mr Guy said. According to forecasts, Hume’s population is expected to increase to 372,627 by 2041, with the population squeeze putting stress on housing affordability, roads, public transport, schools and hospitals. Sunbury Residents Association president Peter Free said he hoped a new council would build missing infrastructure that is needed in the area.
“Halls and arts centres are needed, a hospital, tourism is failing in Sunbury,” Mr Free said. “A new council will benefit the people of Sunbury, it will benefit the whole area.” But Hume mayor Cr Geoff Porter said the council had not yet spoken to the opposition about the move. “Hume City Council is aware of statements made in the media but is yet to be directly informed by either the Liberal candidate for Sunbury or the leader of the opposition,” Cr Porter said. “It is frustrating and disappointing yet again, Mr Guy can speak to the media about it but does not have the courtesy of meeting
with us, especially given that our residents would be directly impacted by this. “This is a significant issue that will impact the whole of Hume – its communities, staff and all stakeholders could be disadvantaged if it was to proceed.” Victorian Local Governance Association chief executive Kathryn Arndt urged caution in splitting Sunbury from Hume, suggesting there would be a “14 per cent rate increase for local residents if a split was to proceed”. “In order to ensure financial viability of the new split council, rate increases of 5.5 per cent would be required for 10 years,” Ms Arndt said.

Level crossing removal pledge By Jessica Micallef The notorious Gap Road level crossing will be removed if Labor is re-elected at next month’s state election. The state government made the announcement last week. It said while the preferred design for the removal was road under rail, the final decision was subject to further engineering and consultation with the local community. About 19,000 vehicles currently travel through the crossing every day, and that
number is expected to grow to 27,000 by 2026. Hume mayor Geoff Porter said the removal of the level crossing had been a long time coming for residents and businesses in Sunbury. “Hume City Council has been aware for some time that this rail crossing is a cause for frustration,” he said. “We know how successful the level crossing removal at Camp Road in Broadmeadows has been and council welcomes the Victorian government’s election commitment to remove the Gap Road/Station Street level crossing in Sunbury.

“This would also be good news for jobs in the area during construction and would create easier access to local small businesses within the town and Sunbury Square.” Member for Sunbury Josh Bull welcomed the election pledge. He said boom gates at Gap Road can be down for up to 26 per cent during
the morning peak. “This level crossing is a dangerous death-trap, leaving local families stranded for far too long in traffic,” Mr Bull said. “It’s time for it to go.” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the removal will help reduce traffic and improve vehicle safety. “No government has ever removed this many level crossings this quickly – reducing congestion, improving public transport, saving lives and creating thousands of jobs along the way,” Ms Allan said.

The program will teach puppies basic obedience and commands and how to appropriately socialise with other dogs and people. “Socialisation skills in the first few weeks of a dog’s life set the standard for their behaviours as adult dogs,” Dr Chay said. Ms Douglas said she was excited about working with local dogs. “We want all of our graduates leaving our puppy school as well-mannered members of the family,” she said. Commuters will find it easier to park their cars at Woodend and Macedon train stations, with the opening of more than 300 new carpark spaces. Member for Macedon Mary-Ann Thomas said that the upgraded carparks give residents easy access to the busy stations for the growing population. “Demand for parking in our community is growing each week – that’s why we’ve boosted the amount of spaces to provide much-needed relief for locals,” Ms Thomas said. Crews worked on upgrading 195 spaces at Woodend station and 110 spaces at Macedon. Both carparks also now have new lighting, CCTV and footpaths, ensuring a safer use for all commuters. “These spaces will ease pressure at Woodend and Macedon stations and help people access the trains they rely on every day to get to work, school and back home,” Ms Thomas said. At Woodend station, a new footpath linking Corinella Road and the existing pedestrian railway crossing has improved the access through the station precinct, through to the Woodend town centre. In Macedon, new accessible car parking spaces are connected to the platform with stairs and an accessible ramp, with a footpath connected to Smith Street and the station. The works come on top of the creation of 122 new carpark spaces in Kyneton which were opened last year. Hume council is considering renaming a Sunbury reserve next to St Anne’s Primary School as the Carmel Edmends Reserve. Mrs Edmends was the school’s principal from 1978 until 1985. She was known for her community work with youth groups and the Parish of Sunbury. She died in 2007.

Halloween is in full swing in Sunbury. Resident Luke Perks has been decorating his house with a spectacular Halloween-themed light show since 2016, trying to recapture some of the magic he experienced on a trip to Disneyland. Every October his Withers Close house is decked out in all things Halloween, from glowing pumpkins to cackling witches. The spooky and kooky decorations take up to a month to put in place. Mr Perks said he loves the atmosphere when local kids react to the decorations.
About 400 children visited the decorations last year and Mr Perk is hoping for a big turnout again this year. His Halloween house has inspired other Sunbury residents to embrace the occasion and there are now several houses decked out as part of Sunbury Halloween Houses. Officer’s youth honour
Toddler bitten by snake
By Jessica Micallef In his role as the youth resource officer at Gisborne Police station, Leading Senior Constable Jason Azzopardi has seen first-hand the challenges that many young people face. He knows the effect bullying, substance abuse, unemployment and family violence can have on young people. And so he founded KidzFlip, a not-for-profit group that links troubled youth with training, education and support groups, to help youth face some of those challenges. His efforts were recognised recently with a nomination in the Victorian Australian of the Year Local Hero’s award. Mr Azzopardi said he was surprised he was nominated. “I was shocked. I thought there were people more deserving of the nomination,” Mr Azzopardi said. “It was good to be amongst people listening to their stories and it was lovely to be nominated.” Mr Azzopardi said he has always been motivated to help others. He has provided support and care to the families and friends of three young people who lost their battle with mental illness. Mr Azzopardi attended an award ceremony at Government House last week where the state winners were announced. The national awards will be held in Canberra next January. National Australia Day Council chief executive Karlie Brand said the Victorian nominees are among more than 120 people being recognised as part of the 2019 Australian of the Year Awards. “The … nominees are inspiring not only for their achievements, but for their passionate pursuit of dreams, innovative thinking and commitment to helping others,” Ms Brand said.

Residents are being urged to be on the lookout for snakes as warmer weather draws them out. There were five reported snake bites across Victoria last week, including a toddler who was bitten while in the yard of his Sunbury house. The two year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics and later taken to hospital. He was admitted to hospital for observation and released last Wednesday. Snake catcher Jarrod Bingham warned residents to take extra precautions around snakes. “If you respect a snake, it will respect you,” he said. “Snakes need to be provoked [to attack].” Mr Bingham said that as the summer months approach, snakes will be looking to cool down. “Snakes love cool shady areas. If a snake is left in the sun for 20 minutes it will die,” he said. He advised people to keep the doors to their houses closed and to clear up their outdoor areas. “Snake proof your yard, mow the lawn, trim the bushes so they are nice and cut,” Mr Bingham said. “Clean up rubbish. Snakes love a place to hide. “Snakes will be wanting water so put pet water bottles inside.” Jessica Micallef

Eco park finish line in sight By Jessica Micallef Macedon Ranges council will apply for $1.26 million funding to complete the Romsey Eco Therapy Park. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson last week said the council would apply for funding through the federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund, to help “the project to become a reality”. The Romsey Eco Therapy Park has been a nine-year labour of love to transform the former Romsey Primary School site on Main Street into a wellbeing hub. The site had been unused for more than a decade before work on the park began. The Greater Romsey All-Abilities Park Committee has worked with the council to design a space where people of all ages and abilities can have a sensory and therapeutic experience in nature. Stage one of the park, which included the refurbishment of the former Romsey Primary School building and its transformation into a community health centre, was completed in June this year. Stage two, which covers the remainder of the site, has not yet been funded. However, the park committee recently received a boost, with $200,000 to build a climbing forest at the park as part of the state government’s Pick My Project funding scheme. Earlier this month the Labor government also pledged $718,000 towards the park if it wins next month’s state election. The council initially applied for a $1.1 million grant but has increased it to $1.26 million in order to provide adequate car parking and road treatment works at the park’s site.
Divine concert idea Female choir group the Divine Divas of Sunbury is joining forces with male pop choir Low Rez for a concert in Woodend. Divine Divas director Adam Przewlocki said the upcoming event is a great occasion for residents in the area. “It’s a first-time, unique event in Macedon,” Przewlocki said. “It’s great to come together in concert and

Wombat forest ‘lock-up’ anger By Sumeyya Ilanbey Reclassifying Wombat State Forest to become a national park would be an “ecological disaster”, according to forest supporters. The Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) has been ordered by the state government to investigate the future use and classifications of Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges state forests. A VEAC draft report’s recommendations include changing the status of the Wombat State Forest, between Woodend and Daylesford, by establishing the Wombat-Lerderderg National
Park – a move that could restrict public access. The report is open for public comment until December 10. But regular forest user Loris Duclos, and recipient of the commonwealth’s centenary medal for “outstanding service to the environment, particularly the Wombat State Forest”, has slammed the recommendation and described it as an “ecological disaster”. “Our forest went through two decades of unsustainable industrial logging, which our community fought hard against to stop from happening,” Ms Duclos said. “In the 1990s, the fight was against the extreme right who wanted
to chop everything. The fight has now become against the extreme left who want to keep people out of large areas of the forest.” Ms Duclos said new tree growth has not been managed properly, creating a “suppressed” forest, where trees are “skinny and stumped”. She said any plans to close off the forest to the public would exacerbate the fire risk and stymie efforts to restore the forest. Bacchus Marsh retiree Steve Smitham has camped at the forest over the past 47 years. He said changing the Wombat State Forest’s status will restrict his ability to enjoy the outdoors.
He said there has been a “groundswell” of support against classifying the Wombat State Forest into a national park and is urging the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to heed community concerns. Other recommendations in the report that affect Macedon Ranges include a new bushland reserve at Black Forest Drive in Macedon, converting Cobaw State Forest to Cobaw conservation Park and upgrading the Lerderderg State Park, between Bullengarook and East Trentham, to national park status. The state government was contacted for comment.
College hub unveiled Sacred Heart College Kyneton’s new applied learning hub is up and running. College VCAL co-ordinator Helen Campbell said the new learning space, officially opened last week, was a great addition for students. “It’s an open classroom space with two inter-connecting rooms dedicated to a variety of learning styles,” Ms Campbell said. She said the repurposed building would enable teachers to practise their team teaching. Small clusters of tables have been made available for students to complete hands-on group work in the new hub. “It’s designed for applied learning kids, it’s also used for STEM activities, robotics, VET horticulture students and our year 9 LINCS [Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success] program,” she said. Ms Campbell described last week’s opening

MY PLACE Russell Kear is big on staying active and healthy. The Sunbury resident chats with Esther Lauaki about his involvement in the local seniors club. What is your connection to Sunbury/Riddells Creek? I live in Sunbury, but am a member of the Riddell and District Senior Citizens Club. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve live in Sunbury since 1970.
Tell us about how you became involved in the Riddell and District Senior Citizens Club. I started helping an elderly neighbour who had been a member for 30 years. I was driving for him when he couldn’t any longer because he was 101. I then joined the club two years ago. What does the group do? The club was started by two couples, the Bolithos and the Moores, some 50 years ago. They were playing cards over a cup of tea in the Riddells Creek community hall. From there, the club found its home inside a purpose-built elderly citizens hall 35 years ago. The aim of the club is to give residents a place to participate in some light exercises, activities, games and we have a bus trip once a month. It’s a social group and we have lots of laughter and lots of

fun. We’re well supported by the Riddells Creek community. What other hats do you wear in the community? I help with Rotary activities and I’m involved in the Sunbury model trains group.

Woodend’s inability to bowl out a side has again hurt it in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup premier firsts. The day started well for Woodend, as it made a more than respectable 7-192 against Diggers Rest Bulla. Michael Nalesnyik top-scored with 62, while former captain Adam Johnstone made 50. Woodend coach Greg Matthews said they had been happy with the score at the innings break. But it didn’t prove anywhere near enough with the Burras reaching 4-194 with nearly nine overs remaining. Lindon Dowsett top-scored with 72. Matthews said they weren’t able to back it up with the ball. “We were lacking penetration with the ball,� he said. “Diggers Rest were pretty consistent with the bat and batted really positively. They took advantage of the bad balls.� Jamie Pettigrew and Warren Else took two wickets each for Woodend. Matthews said they would work on their bowling during the week. He said their opposition were proving to be more consistent across the whole game. “In each of our games we haven’t been able to bowl them out,� he said. “The ability to take 10 wickets is important. We’re not building partnerships and hitting the right spots consistently.
“We’re, myself included, not hitting the right spots for long enough.� Woodend, which played in last season’s grand final, finds itself sitting sixth with a 1-3 record after four rounds. This week it faces Sunbury, which is yet to win a match. Matthews said they would have to keep working hard. “We’ll continue to work hard at training. We play Sunbury this weekend and we’re hoping to get a win on the board and push forward and get a bit of momentum.� Sunbury enters the match on the back of a big loss to Gisborne. Gisborne made 5-227 with Sunbury falling well short, bowled out for 111. Wallan also remains without a win, after losing to Bacchus Marsh. The Magpies never looked likely, bowled out for just 64. Bacchus Marsh quickly made the runs, finishing 1-66. Romsey won its third match of the season, beating Sunbury United. Chris Burkett continued his good form with 123, helping Romsey to 4-264. Sunbury United was bowled out for 168. In the B-grade competition, Riddell and Rupertswood remain the only undefeated teams. Riddell easily defeated Eynesbury Eagles, while Rupertswood accounted for Gisborne. Ashfield defeated East Sunbury in a well played game, while Bacchus Marsh upset St Anthonys.

Sunbury Kangaroos on the hop to the EDFL All Sunbury Kangaroos senior teams will play in the Essendon District Football League from next year after the club’s move from the Riddell District Football Netball League got the tick of approval. The EDFL announced last week that the Kangaroos’ application to join the league had been approved by AFL Victoria and the club would join the league full-time. The Kangaroos had long discussed the possible move to the EDFL, with it going to a vote of club members in October. Members voted 96-3 in favour of the move. Speaking following the decision, Kangaroos’ president Allan Walters said it was the perfect time for the club to make the move. Their women’s side played in the EDFL this season. “After a lot of hard work that has been going
on behind the scenes for well over 12 months, it’s good to have both men and women playing under the one umbrella,” he said. “It has been three years since our first initial discussion with the EDFL. The first year the timing probably wasn’t right and last year we left it too late. This year we were more prepared and got the ball rolling and were always one step ahead of it.” Netball is one area which was behind the push to move leagues, with the EDFL not having compulsory netball, unlike the RDFNL. Walters said the club’s inability to field a full complement of netball sides had become a frustration among his and other clubs in the RDFNL. “At the end of the day we only guaranteed one side for next season,” he said. The club is expected to announce some new
senior football signings in the coming weeks now the decision has been finalised. EDFL chief executive Craig Armstead agreed that it was the perfect time for the Kangaroos’ men’s sides to come across. “Obviously we’ve had teams in the competition, so they’re not an entirely new club for us and we’re delighted to have them,” he said. “We think they can bring quite a bit to our men’s program.” The Kangaroos have decided to start in division 2 and work their way up the ranks. Armstead said that’s a decision they support. Armstead said the Sunbury area was an important part of the EFLF’s geographical area. “I see it as an outer metropolitan Melbourne suburb,” he said. “We’re looking at where our footprint and
growth is. We have to be strategic and it’s not a grab from wherever we can and it’s not the case with Sunbury Kangaroos, we’ve gone out and spent time with them and had some really good open dialogue. “We want the Sunbury Kangaroos to come in and be successful on and off field.” AFL Goldfields regional manager Rod Ward said RDFNL clubs voted in favour of supporting the Kangaroos’ decision to leave the league. He said the clubs felt that even if they voted against the decision, that AFL Victoria would likely approve the move anyway and it was pointless trying to stop it. Ward said it was disappointing to lose the Kangaroos. The RDFNL will now have 11 senior clubs. Tara Murray

Aidan Darmanin top-scored with 24 points. The women’s team also beat the Blazers in the north east competition. It was a solid 62-44 win for the Tigers, with Jessica Mangan top-scoring with 17 points. There is a competition-wide bye this weekend.

If Madison Prespakis’ junior football career is anything to go by, Carlton’s women’s side will be in for a treat in the coming years. Prespakis has long dominated football fields, firstly with Romsey and then the Sunbury Lions, before stepping up to the Calder Cannons and representing her state. This year alone she shared the TAC Cup best and fairest and most valuable player at the national championships, with eventual number one AFLW draft pick Nina Morrison. Even when she stepped up to VFL level this year, Prespakis averaged 25 disposals a game. With a resume as long as hers, it was no surprise to see Prespakis taken in the top three in the draft on Tuesday. The Sunbury resident only nominated to be selected by Victorian metro teams and Carlton swooped at pick three, after Geelong had the first two picks. Prespakis said it was a dream come true to be an AFLW player. She said since she started
to play football with Romsey she had wanted to play at the highest level. “It is such relief and it’s all so exciting,” she said. “I thought my career would be cut short with the boys and didn’t think I would get this opportunity. “One day girls [like me] couldn’t be AFLW players and now I am an AFLW player. “I just want to start training.” Prespakis said heading into the draft she thought she was most likely to be selected by Carlton or Collingwood, the first two Melbourne-based teams with picks. She said while she considered allowing herself being selected by Geelong at pick one or two, she wanted to stay closer to home. While she has grown up being an Essendon supporter and would likely always be one at heart, she was happy to go to Carlton. “In the end, I didn’t care where I went, as long as I went,” she said. “It was nice to be drafted at pick three. There was a lot of tears when I was picked. “My family cried and a few friends were there

too and are so proud of me. I had a few tears too.” Prespakis didn’t have to wait long to meet her teammates, with the Blues putting on a function for the new draftees on draft night. The draft starts a couple of big weeks for Prespakis, who turns 18 this week. She starts pre-season training on November 14. “I want to get through pre-season clean [of injuries] and get into the round one team. “I just want to play good footy and keep playing my footy.” Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford said Prespakis will strengthen the Blues’ line-up in 2019. “We couldn’t be happier to secure Maddy. Not only is she a proven ball-winner, but she has a super footy IQ and makes good decisions with ball in hand,” Harford said. “Playing for Melbourne Uni in the VFLW competition, she averaged more than 25 disposals and also managed to hit the scoreboard, so we can’t wait to see her in the navy blue next year.”
Sunbury had a big win in Bowls Victoria Pennant, division 1, section 1 against Essendon (2), taking all but one point on offer in the 82 (17)-64 (1) win. Mark Cowan’s rink won 26-13, Carla Krizanic won on the last end, while Todd Trewarne had a solid win. Lee Wesley’s rink had a draw, with Essendon picking up shots on the final end. It was a good weekend for Sunbury with five of its six teams winning, with several big winning rinks across the day. The club’s women’s midweek side lost to Deer Park.
