Party full steam ahead Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society is inviting the community to join its 40th birthday celebrations on Sunday. The society’s volunteers are hosting the annual steam rally and family fun day to celebrate four decades of preserving and restoring machinery in New Gisborne. President Anthony Davis said the day was a wonderful opportunity for members to showcase the fruits of their voluntary efforts, and the friendship and companionship that the club offers. “[It’s a chance to] Reminisce or perhaps show the younger generation what life was like pre-electricity, computers, internet and the like,” he said. The event will showcase steam engines, vintage and classic cars and the society’s new indoor model train. The popular annual tractor pull will take place, featuring competitors from across Victoria. An animal farm, market stalls and food vendors will also join the party. The rally and fun day will be on Sunday, May 20 from 9.30am-3pm at Steam Park, Webb Crescent, New Gisborne. Crash highlights ‘mayhem’ By Serena Seyfort A car crash that shut down Bulla Road during peak hour last week, forcing traffic to the congested Calder Freeway, proves why the single-lane road needs urgent upgrading. That’s the word of campaigners who have for years been pushing for the government to duplicate Bulla Road and Bulla Bridge or build a Bulla bypass. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said last Tuesday’s crash highlighted why Bulla Road needs to be widened. He said it was not the first incident to close the road and add to gridlock on the Calder.
“And it’s going to happen again,” he said. “What was a minor problem 10 years ago has become a major problem today. “The population explosion around Sunbury has meant the traffic that goes down that road has doubled.” Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn raised the issue in Parliament on Tuesday following what he described as the morning “mayhem”. He said the incident had illustrated that “just one accident can create major problems for commuters and other travellers from Sunbury”. “We cannot allow the situation to continue where thousands of cars a day travel across a
bridge which is one lane each way – a bridge which was built about 150 years ago for horse-and-cart travel,” Mr Finn said. Sunbury Residents Association tweeted: “This morning’s Bulla Road closure highlighted the need for a Bulla bypass.” Bulla Road was closed for hours in both directions between Loemans Street and Wildwood Road following the crash on Bulla Hill soon after 6am. Sunbury motorist Karen Cecati, who was at the top of Bulla Hill when the crash happened, said traffic on Bulla Road came to a standstill for about 40 minutes before drivers were directed by the fire brigade to turn back to Sunbury.
Commuters seeking alternate routes then hit massive congestion on the Calder Freeway, with traffic reportedly at a standstill as far back as Diggers Rest. Drivers took to Facebook to warn others that the Calder Freeway was “a carpark” and advising anyone on their way to the route to “go home”. Ms Cecati has been using Bulla Road to commute to work for 15 years and said the traffic situation had deteriorated. “It’s just ridiculous,” she said. She said she was “not surprised” accidents occurred on Bulla Road while it remained single lane going through the valley.

Macedon House clean-up order By Serena Seyfort The owners of derelict and vandalised Macedon House in Gisborne have been ordered to repair it or face hefty fines. Heritage Victoria has ruled that the building had fallen into such a state of disrepair that the future preservation of the state-listed heritage asset was under threat. Planning Minister Richard Wynne last month signed off on orders requiring the owners to clean up the site and secure all doors and windows within 21 days. A 90-day deadline for drainage works and the
underpinning of external bluestone was also given. “Those lucky enough to own heritage assets have a responsibility to maintain them – and we’ll ensure they do,” Mr Wynne said. Macedon House, a single-storey bluestone building, dates back to the 1840s and is considered a rare surviving example of an early Victorian hotel. The building has been vacant since it stopped being used as a kindergarten in 2004. In the years since, windows have been smashed and boarded up, the walls punched
with holes and graffiti scrawled on the building’s facade. Melbourne developer Brian Forshaw sold the property last year with plans for development into a retirement village for $1.21 million – but the transaction has yet to be settled. Macedon Ranges council said it had in been contact with the owner of Macedon House about fixing up the site and had informed the owner about potential state grants for assistance. – with Domain

The sale of the Romsey and District Fire Brigade’s group headquarters has been put on hold by the state government. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas last week announced the sale process – which had already begun – would not continue unless a solution to the group’s concerns was found. Ms Thomas said she would advocate on behalf of the local CFA group. “I’m very concerned about moves to relocate the Romsey group headquarters without proper consultation about where the group will go,” she said. “The Romsey group of fire brigades has provided an excellent service to the Romsey community and the broader district. “It’s unacceptable that consideration of the group’s future is taking place without proper communication with volunteers on the ground.” Ms Thomas’ announcement comes after Star Weekly reported the group was calling for help to stop the sale, which was being undertaken by the CFA. Group officer Ralph Hermann had said the group and the community groups who used the headquarters would be left homeless by the sale, and that the headquarters’ extension had been facilitated by funding from the council’s Ash Wednesday Fund. Ms Thomas said she looked forward to sitting down with the Romsey group and the CFA to discuss the issues.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas launched a $2 million artisanal agriculture and premium food program in Pipers Creek earlier this month. Funded in the 2018-19 state budget, the program will develop an industry plan for the Victorian artisanal agriculture and premium food sector. It will include grants to support business growth, biosecurity and industry support services. Forums will be held in Woodend and Daylesford in coming months to survey food producer and industry group needs.
Road work ending
The repavement of the Burke and Wills Track in Baynton and Sidonia Road in Pastoria and accompanying drainage works are due to be completed by the end of June, according to Macedon Ranges council. Burn restrictions lifted By Serena Seyfort Restrictions for burning off on smaller properties in the Macedon Ranges have been lifted until June 12. Residents living on land of less than one acre in size do not need a permit from the council to burn off during this period, as they normally would. Council director assets and operations
Dale Thornton said the requirement had been lifted temporarily to encourage locals to clear their properties of green waste. He said the council had received a large number of requests for permits since fire restrictions were lifted on May 1, following recent storms that caused fallen trees and branches. “Lifting the restrictions will allow landowners to clean up their property now that

the fire danger period is over,” he said. Mr Thornton has asked residents to closely supervise burn-offs and to monitor the site for at least seven days after the fire to ensure it is fully extinguished. Parking spaces in residential streets could be opened up for commuter parking under a new plan to address parking shortages. Hume council’s draft parking restrictions policy will look at the use of parking spaces in residential streets near Sunbury train station to see if there is a possibility they can be used by commuters. Under the policy, parking restrictions could be changed with the aim of having “parking occupancy for residential areas at a maximum 70 per cent of capacity” during the day. The residential areas adjacent to the station currently have parking limits of four hours, meaning those taking the train to work cannot park there. According to a report tabled at Hume council’s last meeting, carparks at the station fill quickly and commuters are being forced to park up to a kilometre or more away from the station. The report noted that many resident vehicles were not parked in the streets during work hours. The council said it would not make any changes to parking restrictions without consulting property owners and occupiers. Feedback on the draft policy is being sought from May 21 to June 18. The state government last month announced it would construct 300 new carparks for Sunbury station, starting in 2019.

Macedon Ranges council is encouraging everyone from its local school communities to nominate their school crossing supervisor for the 2018 Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year award. Thirty-one supervisors work across the Macedon Ranges, ensuring every person gets across the road safely outside 19 schools. The council’s manager of community safety, Anne-Louise Linder, said the supervisors, some of whom had been working to help locals cross the road for 35 years, often also taught pupils about road safety. Sad farewell for Snowy By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges residents and visitors are mourning the loss of Snowy, one of Hanging Rock’s beloved kangaroos. More than 1000 people have taken to Facebook to share their commiserations for her death, and their photos and memories with the notoriously friendly kangaroo. After being rescued from her deceased mother’s pouch, Snowy was a resident at Hanging Rock for almost 20 years, where she mothered a number of joeys. Locals have recalled the pale grey kangaroo as a “favourite customer” at the Hanging Rock market, where she was seen hopping into stalls and displays, and as a feature of the annual Hanging Rock car show. She was often found hanging around cricket games, Hanging Rock cafe and picnickers. The pale grey kangaroo was recently seen trying to stay in a tent at the annual campout at the rock and joining the participants at a fun run last month. Snowy welcomed pats, frequently lay down alongside strangers, and even allowed Hanging Rock visitors to lie resting on her. A common sentiment amongst the outpour on Facebook is, “Rest in peace Snowy, Hanging Rock just won’t be the same without you”.
Safety the key as intersection gets upgrade Safety improvements are on the way for Main Street in Romsey following last week’s state budget. Funding was allocated to build a roundabout at the intersection of Main and Barry streets, after years of community campaigning for the upgrade. VicRoads consulted with more than 570 people last year before deciding that a roundabout would be the best option for the increasingly busy intersection. More than 100 residents also signed a recent petition, organised by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, calling for the roundabout. Ms Thomas said the new roundabout would improve safety and reduce congestion in the town. “After a hard-fought campaign, the people of Romsey can be proud that their persistence will fix the dangerous Barry Street intersection,” Ms Thomas said. Pedestrian lights will also be installed on Main Street, outside Romsey IGA, between Murphy Street and Stawell Street. The Victorian budget has funded the first formal crossing for Main Street as the number of people using the Romsey shopping precinct increases. “We want to keep motorists and pedestrians on Romsey roads safe,” Ms Thomas said. “This new crossing and the roundabout will help achieve just that.”

Dog attacks prompt warning By Serena Seyfort

She said the council was also concerned that residents seemed to be OK with dogs roaming the streets. “It is not OK for your pet to wander,” Ms Linder said. “That means closing and locking your gate so there is no chance for someone to leave the gate open and regularly checking there are no gaps in your fence.” She said all dogs had the potential to become aggressive. The council is urging residents to report sightings of unsupervised dogs.
Dog owners are being reminded that it is illegal for dogs to be unsupervised on public land following a spate of serious attacks in the Macedon Ranges. Council officers were called to 13 incidents of dog attacks during March and April – some of which resulted in the death of wildlife, livestock and pets. The council’s manager of community safety, Anne-Louise Linder, said the rate of attacks had not risen, but council officers were very

She said registered dogs would be returned to their owners and steps would be taken to ensure the dogs remained locked up and secured in the future. Penalties for dogs at large and dogs who cause non-serious injury can range from $238-$389. An owner of a dog who causes serious injury faces prosecution and the dog being declared dangerous. Fines of $155 can be applied to owners whose dog rushes or chases a person. Macedon Ranges council can be contacted about pets on 5422 0333.

The value of yesteryear St Mary’s Hall in Kyneton will be like an episode of popular television show Antiques Roadshow on May 20. Antique valuation expert Warren Joel will join the Kyneton community to share his knowledge and expertise as he values locals’ antiques, heirlooms and artwork. The Zonta Club of Kyneton is facilitating the Antique Valuation Day to raise funds for its community projects, which include supporting school awards, STEM scholarships and sponsoring a member of the Kyneton senior women’s football team. MY PLACE Richard Peel is the man behind Bakers Delight in Gisborne. The baker has lived in the Macedon Ranges and supported local groups for 23 years. He speaks with Serena Seyfort. Tell us about your connection to the Macedon Ranges. I moved to the Macedon Ranges when I bought the business, so I’ve lived in this region for 23 years. I’ve lived in Riddells Creek and Gisborne South, and now I’m in Gisborne. I work in Gisborne town centre and one of my sons works for me here. He’s my right-hand man. My two sons have also played a lot of sport at Macedon and Gisborne – basketball, football, cricket. How has owning Bakers Delight gotten you involved with the community? When I first started here, 23 years ago, I didn’t know anyone, which was daunting. Now I know a lot, a lot of people in the community. I sponsor everything – there would not be a club in town that I haven’t sponsored. For example, I sponsored Gisborne Primary School’s breakfast club and I sponsored Anzac Day events that have just passed. What’s one of your favourite sponsorship programs? I sponsor the Returned Service League. Anyone who has served this country can come and get a free loaf of bread every day for the rest of their lives. It’s my way of thanking them for their service. Everyone should do something for our returned service people.

From vine to top wine Inspired to produced their own wine, the pair leased a vineyard in South Gisborne, where they worked before and after their shifts at a Melbourne function venue. They now lease a larger chardonnay vineyard in Romsey and have their wine made in Werribee. Their wine, including a ‘Vinero’ Hesket pinot noir, has been sold at a range of local venues, including Banks Fine Wine in Kyneton, Woodend Wine Store and at Baringo in New Gisborne. “We’re pretty excited,” Mr O’Brien said. “It’s a good opportunity to get our name out there.” Young Gun of Wine will announce its top 12 national finalists later this month. Two Macedon Ranges wine producers have made it on to the Young Gun of Wine’s 2018 list of the top 50 Australian winemakers. Liam O’Brien and Matthew Brooke named their brand ‘Athletes of Wine’ after the tough training regime they subjected themselves to for 13 years, ever since they worked together as bartenders, in order to make it in the wine world. Mr O’Brien said they had endeavoured to quickly become sommeliers by studying full-time and training their bodies to perform as elite tasters. “We needed to go from rookie to MVP as quickly as possible,” he said. “So we undertook a rigorous training regime – tasting and learning about wine seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.”

Cats pull away for solid win
By Tara Murray Sunbury United Tigers went back to basics as they accounted for Altona Roosters in the NRL Vic First Grade competition. With wind and rain playing havoc on Saturday, the Tigers focused on doing the small things right and it paid off. They led by two tries at half-time, before continuing the scoring in the second half to seal the 34-16 win. Tigers’ coach Terry Constantinou said he was happy to come away with the win. “The conditions weren’t favourable for either side,” he said. “We tried to play an expansive game, but had to reel back in. We started to play a more simple game, as we didn’t want them getting back into it. “We were probably about on par at half-time … in the second half the rain was coming down more than the first.” The win is the Tigers second as the side starts to gel together. Constantinou said with a number of new players in the team he expected it would take some time for them to gel. He said getting wins on the board was rewarding for the playing group. “The team is stacked with talent, it’s about putting it all together,” he said. “We’re got a few marquee players and on paper we have a great side. “At times we’re our own worst enemy. We’d rather get it right here before finals. “For us, it’s about building for finals. We’ve got a lot of experience and it doesn’t matter if we finish fourth or first, for us it’s about making finals.” After five rounds, the Tigers are sitting fourth on the ladder.
Macedon came from behind to defeat Diggers Rest in their Riddell District Netball League clash. The Burras, coming off their first loss of the season, looked the better team in the first half and led by six goals at the main break. Not for the first time this season, the Cats stepped up a level in the third quarter, to draw even heading into the final quarter. A 14 to six final quarter sealed the 44-36 win for the Cats and kept their winning start to the season alive. Tayissa Coppinger, who split her time between the midcourt and defence, was named the Cats’ best player, while Chloe Wilson scored 36 goals. Burras defender Anica Scherer was named the best for her side. In other matches, Romsey got the better of Melton Centrals. The two teams had a draw in their first match-up this season, but there was no close result this time. The Redbacks took control of the game in the second quarter and were never headed, restricting Centrals to just 10 goals in the second half. The Redbacks won 46-25. Chelsea Ross shot 28 goals for the Redbacks. Riddell proved too strong for Broadford winning 62-32. Wallan got the win against Rockbank 55-31. Battling Bulldogs fail to overcome a depleted list An undermanned Gisborne went down fighting against Carisbrook, but fell just short of a win in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition at the weekend. Taking just 18 players into the game, including a couple who probably shouldn’t have played, the Bulldogs were on the back foot from the start. Further injuries didn’t help the cause, but they continued to fight. While they were able to outscore Carisbrook in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough and the Bulldogs lost 6.9 (45)-4.5 (29) Bulldogs’ coach Anthony Carrigg said he couldn’t have asked for anything more from his playing group and was proud of how they fought out the game. He said if they had a bench the result could have been different. “We had seven girls out injured and went up there with 18 players. “We finished with 16 players and they had a full team.
“We did really well and won the last quarter, giving them a scare. “They were worried, we had no midfield rotations and they were buggered.” Best players were Jessica D’Antonio, who kicked three goals, Hannah Beasley and Stephanie Brancatisano. The result means the Bulldogs are 2-2 after four rounds. Carrigg said they were happy with how they started the season, in just their second season. Last year the Bulldogs played in division 2, but this year there’s only one division, meaning they are playing teams which played in division 1 last season. “The only game we’ve been really beaten was against Redan and they are one of the teams to beat,” he said. “Despite the score we gave them a good run for their money. “We’ve added a few experienced players and the girls have got experience from last year.
“It’s tougher, but the girls are really enjoying the challenge.” Among the experienced players to join the team are D’Antonio, Nadine Bailey, Bridie Kinghorn, Brianna Woodburn and Jessica Morris. Carrigg said they would love to make finals this year. “The first thing is to be competitive and we want to play finals. That would be the ultimate goal and I think when we get a few players back that it’s achievable.” The Bulldogs have a bye this weekend and Carrigg said it had come at a perfect time. Cannons steady for win By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons produced their best all-round team performance as they accounted for Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup on Saturday. Coming off a disappointing game the week before, the Cannons played some good football in punishing conditions. The Cannons failed to make the most of kicking with the wind in the first quarter, but broke the game open in the third, kicking six goals to one. With the game in their control, the Cannons locked things up in the final quarter and held on to win 10.8 (68)-4.5 (29). Cannons’ coach Ross Smith said the consistent team performance across the four quarters was the most pleasing thing to come from the game. “It was a pretty ordinary day conditions-wise, so we’re pleased to get the points,” he said. “We had the wind in the first and third quarters, but didn’t take full advantage in the first quarter. “We kicked six goals in the third quarter and were able to find the scoreboard. It’s always important not to kick behinds with the breeze. It was nice to convert and kick goals. “The rain then really came in. We locked the ball in our forward line in the last quarter. “We had the best of the conditions in the first and third quarters.” Smith said eight to 10 players could have been named in the team’s best. Co-captain Mitchell Podhajski kicked three goals in his return from VFL and was the standout forward. Smith said he also liked the games of Nathan Croft, Curtis Taylor, Tye Browning, Ismail Moussa and Lucas Cavallaro. He said first-gamers Sean Callander and Anthony Righele were also good. The win came without three of the Cannons’ top draft prospects – Jack Bytel, Rhylee West and Mason Fletcher. “Jack has an ongoing back issue and he’s going to miss a couple of weeks and then the national championships,” Smith said. “Rhylee had school football, while Mason is out for the season with stress fractures.” The win means the Cannons sit 3-3 and sixth on the ladder. Smith said he wasn’t concerned with that. “We don’t get caught up with the wins and losses, as under the new finals system everyone plays finals,” he said.

In tough conditions, the Lions won 5.9 (39)-4.7 (31). Alik Magin kicked two goals, along with Jack Landt in his first game back at the club, after being cleared by Essendon Doutta Stars. Patrick MacDonough was named the Lions best. The win sees the Lions sit 4-0 heading in to two weekends off for interleague and then the bye. The Lions A-grade netballers sit 4-0 heading into the break, after defeating Melton 64-24.

The Tigers trailed at three quarter time, before kicking four goals in the last quarter to seal the 13.14 (92)-10.13 (73) win. Billy Mahony was named the Tigers best. Gisborne on the other hand suffered a 12.9 (81)-6.11 (47) loss to Sandhurst. In the A-grade netball, Gisborne lost to Sandhurst 51-40, to sit 2-2 after five rounds.

The Calder Cannons finished their TAC Cup Girl’s season on a high with victory against Eastern Ranges. In their best performance of the season, the Cannons dominated all game, winning 10.8 (68)-4.4 (28). Georgia Patrikios was the only multiple goal kicker for the Cannons with two.

Jets find another level to claw back victory

Sunbury Jets had to come from behind for a hard-fought win against Eltham in Big V Women’s State Championship division. It was an even contest all game, with the margin never getting beyond nine points. The Jets led by a point at quarter-time and three points at half-time. When the Jets hit shots early in the third quarter, they got the margin out to a game-high nine. The Wildcats responded and out-scored the Jets 22-17 for the quarter to lead by one point at the last break. The Wildcats managed to hold the Jets off for most of the last quarter, but the Jets found another level late. They regained the lead with half a minute to go and stayed in front to the end, winning 73-68. Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 24 points, while Josie Stockill provided good assistance with 21.
The Jets’ record sits at 4-3 and they are mid-table. The side will be without guard Monique Stevens for the rest of the season. The club announcing on its social media channels that she is pregnant. Stevens hasn’t played since April 14. The Jets’ men’s side had a mixed weekend, recording a win and a loss. The weekend started the right way, with a 88-74 win against Warrandyte Venom. The middle two quarters proved to be the difference. Scores were level at quarter-time, before the Jets won the second quarter 29-16 and then the third quarter 20-10 to lead by 23 points at the last break. The Jets eased up in the last quarter, but had built up a big enough lead. Five Jets players scored double figures, led by Jed O’Riley with 20 points. Jonathan Alexander had a double-double.
Time to reflect for Roos By Tara Murray The interleague bye comes at a perfect time for Sunbury Kangaroos in the Riddell District Football League. With just one win after five rounds, the Kangaroos are towards the bottom of the ladder. While having been in every match for large periods of the game, they haven’t been able to find the goals to get over the line. On Saturday against Melton Centrals, the Kangaroos had their worst game of the season. The Kangaroos had their chances, especially late, but fell short, losing 6.10 (46)-5.7 (37). Kangaroos coach Anthony Leydin said Centrals wanted the ball more when it mattered. “It was a pretty tight game all day and they handled the conditions better,” he said. “We had 11 of the first 12 inside 50s in the last quarter and it resulted in just one goal. “They went forward and kicked a goal with their second inside 50. It was the little things that made the difference.” Leydin said it was tough to find players who had good games, with only “five or six players” who were above average. “We don’t have the luxury for that.” He named Dwayne Tate, Zane Williams, and Jamie and Tierone Cuffe among their best. Jamie Cuffe, who retired at the end of last season but has been lured back, handled most of the ruckwork in his second straight game in the seniors. Leydin said Jamie’s the heartbeat of the club and there was no holding him back as he tries to help the club out. The result leaves the Kangaroos 1-4 heading into interleague. The Kangaroos could quite easily be ahead of the ledger. Leydin said when they play their best football they can be at least competitive with the top sides. “We lost yesterday and a close loss to Wallan, it puts us behind the eight ball,” he said. “We’ve been in every game and been in a position to go on with it, but we just haven’t been able to.” The coach said they would reflect this week on where they are and look where they want to be going ahead. The Kangaroos have already played 33 players, one less than they played for all of last season. On Saturday, 17 players were missing across the senior and reserves teams. Leydin said that was a mixture of injuries, availability and enthusiasm to play. “We have a good read on the list,” he said. “The 19s have battled for numbers as well. Sunbury wins goal feast Sunbury United has returned to the winners’ list with a high-scoring win against Heidelberg Stars in FFV state league 3 north-west soccer. After a 5-0 defeat at the hands of competition leader Epping City the previous week, Sunbury was keen to make amends. After an even first half, the scores were locked at 2-2, before Sunbury scored the first two goals of the second half to open up a 4-2 lead. Stars hit back with their third to reduce the margin, but Sunbury was able to hold on to win 4-3. Sunbury director Daniel Moore said it was a fantastic game in tough conditions. “It was pretty tough with the wind and the rain,” he said. “It was challenging for both sides. “The first half was back and forth, with us scoring, then them, then us and then them again. “The first half hour of the second half was fantastic and we dominated possession and created opportunities and got two goals. “They then pinched one and had the run of the play … we did enough to hold on.” Sime Brzoja scored twice for Sunbury with Jayden Mercieca and Muhamad Chawk the other goalscorers. The win moved Sunbury back to second on the ladder, behind Epping City. Sunbury has a 4-1-2 record. Moore said the Epping City match was a good opportunity to assess how the side was travelling this season. “That match was disappointing,” he said. “The score didn’t reflect how the game played out. We still played really well and Lino [Grech] was happy with the performance, which sounds funny. “They were lethal up front. These guys are the benchmark of the league. On our day we can beat anyone, Epping included.” Gisborne’s good form in state league 5 west continued with a 2-1 defeat of West Point. The win keeps Gisborne at the top of the ladder, two points clear of Westside Strikers. Gisborne, which has six wins from seven games, has played one more game than the Strikers. Tara Murray
