PJ’s a good fit for fundraiser Sunbury’s Killara Primary School is putting on a ‘PJ Day’ on Thursday in support of the Royal Children’s Hospital. Instead of pulling on their usual uniforms and workwear, pupils and teachers will wear their favourite pyjamas to school to fundraise for The Good Friday Appeal. Participants will bring a gold coin to donate to the appeal in return for the relaxed dress code. The Good Friday Appeal, which will take place the following day, raises much-needed funds for equipment, research and education to support the work of The Royal Children’s Hospital. Newly released plans for the development of the former Kyneton Primary School site have been condemned by residents. Community groups have labelled three proposals put forward in a consultants report as inadequate and fail to capture the “essence” of what the groups were trying to achieve. One reference group is now putting forward its own fourth option which it believes better represents what the community wants. “Our group is full of different people, but everyone is devastated by the consultants’ report,” Kyneton Town Square Reference Group member Rob Bakes said. Mr Bakes said the group, which includes representatives from Kyneton Connections, Kyneton Community Learning Centre, U3A, Kyneton Men’s Shed, and the Lions Club of Kyneton, wanted the site to be run by the community, who would have use of the site without “hire/lease costs”. “Who is going to pay to use it for community events?” Mr Bakes said. Future use of the Baynton Street site has been debated for more than a year, since the primary school announced it would be moving to become part of a new education hub shared with Kyneton Secondary College. The three proposals put forward by consultants Ethos Urban are: The council buying the site and sharing operating responsibilities with the community; local government buying the site and commercially leasing portions; and the site being subdivided and sold. All three include building an access
road north-south through the site, and the eastern portion of the site being developed as an extended town square open space, with potential to accommodate a library/Kyneton Mechanics Institute extension. Community groups Kyneton Town Hub and Kyneton Town Square Reference Group, which were formed to keep the school site in the community’s hands – have condemned the options.

Truck curfews in place By Serena Seyfort Truck curfews have been introduced on Mount Macedon Road to “increase safety for all road users” following community concerns. Trucks weighing more than 16 tonnes can no longer use the road during school pick-up and drop-off times or on weekends. VicRoads acting regional director northern region Brian Westley said the regulations were the result of extensive consultation between logging company HPV Plantations, local residents, Macedon Ranges council and
Victoria Police since November last year. Mr Westley said the community approached VicRoads with “concerns about speed and driver behaviour, increased pedestrian and cycling activity and the noise and debris that can come from logging trucks”. Permanent curfews for trucks weighing more than 16 tonnes now apply on Mount Macedon Road between 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm on weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends. Trucks must also use low gear on specific roads. New road signs have been installed to advise truck operators of the changes.
“We are confident that the combination of truck curfews and mandatory use of low gears will increase safety for all road users,” Mr Westley said. He said logging company HPV had been involved in the process from the start. “We’ve been able to develop these truck curfews to mitigate many of the community’s concerns while also supporting the liveability and commercial interests of the region.” Macedon Ranges council’s director assets and operations Dale Thornton said the council supported the curfews.
Some exceptionally large tomatoes are growing in a Sunbury backyard. Ljubica Bosevski’s tomato plant has sprouted fruits of a size that more closely resemble a pumpkin for the third year in a row. Last week Ms Bosevski gave away a tomato that weighed 620 grams. But the heaviest tomato produced in her garden has come in at a whopping 996 grams – just four grams under a kilo – according to the Sunbury resident. Ms Bosevski said the ordinary tomato plant was given to her three years ago by a friend from Rockbank and she didn’t give the plant any special treatment. “I just water it,” she said. “Four or five tomatoes grow in one bunch, and then the branch breaks.” She said her backyard, formerly farmland, was very neglected before she moved in four years ago. A beloved Bulla community asset has been vandalised and robbed, costing the volunteer organisation that runs it up to $1400. Members of the Tullamarine Live Steam Society arrived at Bulla Hill Railway station early on March 18, to find the station building had been broken into, and the Eftpos machine and money float stolen. Society president Kris Siderov said the thieves had drilled the lock out of the security door, and then kicked in the door. He said the incident had occurred some time after members were at the station on the evening of Wednesday, March 14. Mr Siderov said the society estimated the incident had put it back about $1200-$1400, including the damage to the doors and cash. He said the loss would delay the railway station’s projects by a couple of months. “It’s a real pain in the butt,” he said. “All funds from the ticket sales get put back into projects.” Mr Siderov said the group was “stunned by the number of people who offered to help out” after hearing about the incident. He thanked the community for its support, and said anyone could help by attending the Bulla Hill Railway open days, which are held on the third Sunday of the month. Sunbury police uncovered a growhouse on Cornish Street last week, arresting a 49 year old woman. Ten cannabis plants were seized at the address on Wednesday, March 21 about 7.40am. The woman has been charged with cultivating a narcotic plant and possessing cannabis. She has been bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on June 7.

Changing perceptions A new exhibition that seeks to challenge stereotypes of the pioneering Chinese immigrants leading up to Victorian Federation has opened at Kyneton Museum. Chinese Fortunes explores the history of colonial Chinese Australians on the goldfields and celebrates their contributions to Victoria. The exhibition has been developed at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (MADE) in association with Bendigo’s Golden Dragon Museum and Kyneton Museum. Locals gear up for station fight By Serena Seyfort An ongoing battle against a proposed petrol station at 59a High Street, Woodend will return to the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal next month. The applicant for a United petrol station and “convenience cafe” is challenging Macedon Ranges councils’ refusal to grant a planning permit late last year. Local group Settle Woodend, which is
against the petrol station, is fundraising to have legal and expert representation act on behalf of the community at the April 23 hearing. Group member Judith Ann Robertson said Settle Woodend had been addressing development concerns in Woodend for 10 years. The group recently engaged the services of a local planning barrister to oppose the petrol station. Ms Robertson said she didn’t think any design for a petrol station could “be in keeping
with Woodend”, and any station would significantly impact on the unique town’s vista. She said there were other concerns about the disruption in traffic a petrol station would cause at the congested access point, and the consequential effect on pedestrians and cyclists. Macedon Ranges residents have rallied against plans for a service station in Woodend twice in the past three years. The most recent application was submitted
to the council in September 2017. At the time residents campaigned against the application on social media and submitted a number of objections to the council. Residents were also vocal against a similar proposal for a Coles Express at the same site in 2015. That proposal was rejected by the council, whose decision was then upheld by VCAT. Ms Robertson said Settle Woodend had already raised more than half the funds it expected it would need for the case.
Fundraiser on fire Local CFA members will again spend their public holiday on Friday door knocking and collecting for the Good Friday Appeal. This Easter marks Macedon CFA brigade captain Greg Snart’s 21st time collecting and co-ordinating Macedon CFA’s contribution to the Royal Children’s Hospital fundraiser. The Macedon resident said he had been very impressed during his personal experience with the hospital when his eldest daughter spent six weeks in the heart ward as a three-year-old. “The staff in there are brilliant,” he said. “They’re great to deal with and they’re great with the kids.” Mr Snart said the Macedon community had always given generously to the appeal and has asked residents to give again this year. He has asked those who are not going to be home on Good Friday to leave a donation at their door for the CFA to pick up. Macedon has raised $49,404 for the appeal since local fundraising began in 1996.

Two sporting clubs are uniting to raise awareness of mental health, after they each lost a young player to suicide last year. Riddell Football Netball Club and Macedon Football Netball Club plan to begin each season with a one-day senior football and A-grade netball competition to bring awareness to the issue of mental health. The first ‘PUKA UP Cup’ will be held on April 7. Organiser Scott Tresize said the clubs would observe a minute of silence between each game. “The sports are competitive, but the teams will stand intermingled … to show we’re together on the same page,” Mr Tresize said. The event is being run in conjunction with AFL player Wayne Schwass’ mental health

Hume police will be out in force over Easter amid concerns about driver behaviour on the municipality’s roads. A statewide road safety blitz will be running over the Easter long weekend and Hume police plan to saturate local roads during the operation. Inspector Anthony Brown said Hume police would be making a “big commitment” to the road safety operation in a bid to change driver behaviour. “We are concerned by the number of recent fatalities on our roads,” he said. “Last year, we had one fatality on our roads, which is still one too many, but we have already had two this year. “We have had big success in recent years with our road policing. “We don’t want to get back to the time where there were 10-12 fatalities on our roads each year. Every life lost on our roads is one too many.” Two pedestrians were killed on Hume roads in the past four weeks, with a man hit by a car on Mickleham Road at Yuroke on February 26 after his own car was involved in a collision with another vehicle. On March 3, a man was struck by a car on Mickleham Road at Tullamarine. The man was crossing a service lane near the airport when he was hit. Inspector Brown said police would have dangerous drivers in their sights, including those speeding and drink and drug affected. “We want to make sure people are behaving themselves on the roads. Driver behaviour needs to be adjusted. There will be extra people on the roads, so make sure you allow extra time,” he said.

Calls for new furniture, paths and shade trees dominated the feedback from the more than 70 people who shared ideas for Roger Free Park in September, according to the council. Draft plans for the park include installing a new playground and adding concrete paths and seats. The council said community feedback requested that the park continue to require dogs to be on a leash, and that an off-leash area be established. But the council did not plan to change the

Farm project wins award Kyneton’s Melissa Connors has been recognised with a state award for her ‘This farm needs a farmer’ project. Ms Connors was awarded the 2018 Victorian AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award by agriculture minister Jaala Pulford at Melbourne Museum last week. The Kyneton resident received the award for developing her program, which fosters stronger and more engaged farming communities by connecting tree-changers with established and retired farmers who can pass on their invaluable local knowledge. “Melissa’s project is a timely reminder of the importance of promoting and capturing hand-me-down knowledge within the farming community,” Ms Pulford said. Health’s 60th birthday bash Macedon Ranges Health was joined by the community to celebrate its 60th birthday last week, with a final bash scheduled for next month. More than 150 people attended a luncheon at the centre on March 19, to commemorate the not-for-profit organisation having served the Macedon Ranges community for 60 years. Dr David Conron, who worked at the Gisborne health centre for more than 30 years, was one of those who turned out to celebrate. Sunbury United Sporting Club at Langama Park is home to junior, women’s and senior cricket, soccer and rugby league all playing under the Sunbury United banner. The club also hosts the Sunbury Darts Association League and a monthly round of social golf followed by a friendly barbecue. What began back in 1973 as the Sunbury United Soccer Club now has so many different sports and social events that it’s become a mecca for local sports people of all ages. Club manager Belinda Pywell says the amazing camaraderie surrounding the various sports and events is supported by the club’s bistro, Unity on Langama. “Our great chefs, assisted by Maria, Chantal and Jasmine, provide a wide-ranging menu offering all the faves done their way,” she says. “Everyone is welcome to share our really friendly dining experience and kids and members are well looked after. By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons have opened their account in the TAC Cup girls season. After a tough couple of weeks for the reigning premiers, the Cannons faced the Western Jets on Sunday afternoon. Both teams entered the game without a win so far this season. It was a low scoring affair with goals hard to come by. The Cannons won 4.1 (25)-2.1 (13) after kicking the only two goals of the second half. The Cannons kicked the only goal of the first quarter, before the Jets kicked two in the second to lead by five points at the main break. The Cannons regained the lead in the third quarter and despite controlling a lot of the play couldn’t add any more scoreboard pressure. A behind early in the last quarter tied the scores again, with the Jets kicking with the wind. The Cannons got the first goal of the last quarter to regain the lead, a free kick and resulting goal to Alisa Magri sealed the win. It was all single goalkickers for the Cannons, with Magri, Georgia Patrikios, Terira Fry and Madison Prespakis kicking the goals. The skipper, Prespakis, was named best on ground – the third straight game she’s been the Cannons best player. Fry, Stephanie Elias and Patrikios were the other standouts for the Cannons. The Cannons sit 10th after three rounds and face fifth-placed Gippsland Power next Tuesday afternoon in their next match.
A late Calder Cannons comeback was not enough as they lost in a thriller to the Western Jets on Friday night. The match went down to the wire as the two local rivals opened the TAC Cup season. The Cannons kicked the first two goals before the Jets responded with two of their own to leave scores level at quarter-time. The Jets jumped out to a 20-point lead at the main break. Three goals to two for the Cannons in the third quarter brought the margin back to 15 points. Both teams had opportunities in the final quarter, with the Cannons reducing the margin to under a goal with just over three minutes to go. But they wouldn’t get the chance to hit the front, with the only score in that time a point to the Jets. The Cannons lost 12.9 (81)-12.5 (77). Jeremy O’Sullivan and Curtis Taylor kicked three goals each for the Cannons. Co-captain Mitchell Podhajski was named the Cannons best, while Lachlan Sholl and Sam Ramsay were handy contributors. Podhajski was named co-captain on Tuesday night alongside Jack Bytel. Jack Evans and Curtis Taylor round out the leadership group, named as vice-captains. The Cannons host a second straight night match, taking on Eastern Ranges on Thursday night.

Sunbury United achieves its starting goal Sunbury United has cliamed a confidence-boosting victory to start the FFV state league 3 north-west season. Wins early in the season have been rare for Sunbury in the past couple of years, so starting well was a big focus for the side. It didn’t take long for United to get going against Essendon United, with Jayden Mercieca opening the scoring in the second minute. Mohammed El Turkmani made it 2-0 as Sunbury dominated the first half. Once in front Sunbury stayed there, eventually winning 4-1. David Mwarabu and Djafari Mwarabu scored second-half goals within the space of three minutes to seal the win. Sunbury’s Daniel Moore said his side controlled proceedings for 90 per cent of the game and the scoreline indicated that. “The first goal we scored in the first couple of minutes and that set up the game,” he said. “It gave everyone a lift and put Essendon on
the back foot straight away. The first half, we created so many chances and could have scored a couple more goals. They rallied a bit in the second half.” Moore said getting off to a good start was vital. Last season was the first season in three years in which Sunbury wasn’t relegated. The win against Essendon is Sunbury’s first official win of the year, after losing an FFA Cup match. “The main focus for us was on the season,” Moore said. “The FFA Cup would have been a bonus. The league is our bread and butter. “Last season, we started the season with a heavy defeat, so it’s good to turn things around in the first round. “With a bye next round already, to get the win heading into a two-week break – it’s good momentum for the squad.” Moore said the club had finalised its squad in the past few weeks and that coach Lino Grech
seemed happy with how the recruits were travelling . “We have a squad of about 19 players,” he said. “We have commented during the practice matches, how the vibe is already good. It helps when you are winning. “We think we’ve found the right mix of players and personalities and they have binded together. It definitely showed on Saturday.” While the seniors got a win, the reserves didn’t even get on the park. Wet weather meant the pitch was waterlogged and the game was washed out. Jets find the going tough By Tara Murray A tough start to the season has continued for the Sunbury Jets who were on the end of a third straight big loss in Big V men’s division 1. Having lost their opening match by 39 points to Warrandyte and their second match by 29 points to Chelsea on the first weekend of the season, the Jets were hoping for a better result on Saturday night against Collingwood All Stars. It wasn’t the case, as the Jets were outscored in every quarter, losing 94-73. Jets coach Ryan Addison said they hadn’t played anywhere near the level they would like to be. “Chelsea has a pretty loaded side, but we should have been better against Collingwood,” he said. “We haven’t been able to get into our game. “We aren’t playing at the right defence pace and we’re not looking after the ball.” The issues were evident on Saturday night, when the Jets coughed up the ball 29 times – captain Jacob Formosa committing 12 of those turnovers on his own. Addison said they need to continue to work on getting guys moving to the right spots. Formosa top scored with 23 points. Ben Jones, Jed O’Riley and Damian O’Keefe all scored double figures as well. While not a great start for the Jets, Addison knows there is light at the end of the tunnel and expects to see some big improvement in the coming weeks. “We’re still coming together as a group,” he said. “[There’s] A lot of new faces and we’re confident they will all come together. “There’s a lot of improvement from where we are.” Import Jonathan Alexander joined the side last week for the first time, while Addison said they would have an experienced professional join them in about round six or seven. Alexander played just nine minutes on Saturday night after being fouled out. The Jets get this weekend off with the Easter break, but Addison said they would spend plenty of time on the court over the two week period before their next game. “We’ll be working on what we’re doing,” he said. “We’ll be working throughout and not having a break, we’ve got a lot to work on.” The Jets’ women suffered a defeat at the hands of Waverley Falcons on Sunday. The Falcons won 72-61. Oral O’Reilly top scored for the Jets with 22 points. Jacob Formosa top scored on Saturday night.

Wallan has claimed the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade premiership. Rain washed out day one of the final between the Magpies and St Anthonys, with play starting on Sunday morning. The Magpies made 199 with Kieran Atkin top-scoring with 50. The total proved too hard for the Saints, who were bowled out 71. Scott Gilchrist and Brenton Hanson took five wickets apiece.
AFL Goldfields
Nine clubs will field teams in the second season of the AFL Goldfields women’s competition. The competition, with just one division this year, will include Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Gisborne, Melton Centrals and five Ballarat-based sides. The Riddell District Football League youth girls will include Bacchus Marsh, Darley, two Gisborne teams, Melton Centrals, Sunbury Kangaroos and Diggers Rest. Melton Centrals, Melton and Sunbury Kangaroos will be among sides in the AFL Goldfields under-15 competition. Bacchus Marsh, Melton Centrals, Melton and two Gisborne sides will play in the RDFL under-13 girls competition.

The Sunbury Jets’ youth league women’s side had a big win against Camberwell Dragons on Saturday night. In their first season in Big V youth league division 1, the Jets came out firing against the Dragons and were never headed in winning 70-48. Chloe Angove top-scored with 14 points. The Jets’ youth league boys defeated the Dragons 82-71 on Saturday night and defeated Corio Stingrays on Sunday.

Rain prevented any play at the Romsey Golf Club on Saturday, with the 2018 relative pairs event called off. It has been rescheduled for April 21. Three Romsey golfers competed in the Kilmore Golf Club’s 2018 Women’s Challenge Bowl. Wendy Gosden was the best of the three as Woodend Golf Club claimed the overall win. Macedon ups the pace in preparation for flag defence Macedon’s pre-season has kicked into top gear as the club aims for back-to-back Riddell District Football League flags. Having claimed their first senior premiership in more than 40 years last season, the Cats have worked their way into the pre-season. New coach Ben Tankard said the combination of his late appointment and a tough 2017 meant a slow start. “They have come back really good after Christmas,” he said of the players. “There’s good numbers on the track and the guys are fit. “The younger guys were fantastic before Christmas and the older guys have come back fresh. They needed a break after last season.” Tankard said Casey Summerfield, Errol McConnell and Tom Waters were leading the way of the more experienced players, while the younger players were performing strongly in the second half of the pre-season.
“We played six under-19s in our first practice match and they will all be pushing for round one,” he said. There will be spots up for grabs in the Cats side following several changes to the premiership team. Aaron Christensen and Jason Cooke have gone elsewhere, while Josh Clough, Teghan Henderson and Chad Walker have retired. Aaron Christiansen, who wasn’t in the grand final team, has also retired. Tankard said replacing Cooke would be hard. Cooke kicked 80 goals last season and claimed the Bowen Medal for the best player in the competition. “Replacing Jason is the biggest challenge for me,” he said. “We’ll structure up a bit different. We’ll play two key forwards and be quicker at ground level. No one will kick 80 goals for us this year.” Tankard said that rather than going on a
recruitment drive, the club was focusing on bringing through players from within. Jack Kernan, who spent last year overseas, returns and is expected to be among the Cats’ best. Brodie Hoyne comes across from Gisborne and will play seniors. Tankard said that despite the outs, he expected Macedon to again be in the mix. “The older guys should be able to play early and we need to keep the younger guys fresh for a long season,” he said. “It we can prevent injuries, I think we’ll be strong towards the end of the season.” The Cats won their second practice match against Kyneton on Saturday with a 6.6 (42)-3.11 (29) scoreline. Late crash ends hopes By Tara Murray Woodend was left reeling by a late order batting collapse which cost them a Gisborne and District McIntyre Cup premiership. In an incredible day of cricket, Bacchus Marsh pulled one out of the hat to secure the trophy, an undefeated season and leave Woodend shattered. The match started with a whimper, with day one abandoned without a ball being bowled because the ground was under water. Day two was much brighter and Bacchus Marsh won the toss and elected to bat. It looked like the wrong decision as the Bulls, which entered the grand final undefeated, were bowled out for just 115. Woodend coach Michael Nalesnyik was thrilled with the bowling despite Peter Manser doing his hamstring in his eighth over. “It was outstanding to bowl them out for 115,” Nalesnyik said.
“Greg [Matthews] bowled the best I’ve seen him bowl in my two years at the club. “It was a great effort by everyone else to pick up the slack with Pete injured.” Matthews took 5-29, and Warren Else took 3-50 after bowling all 25 overs from one end of the ground. It was a slow start with the bat for Woodend. Woodend was in control at 3-56 and at 3-80 the game looked all but over. But then things started to go wrong. Woodend quickly crumbled and lost its last seven wickets for 14 runs to be all out for 94. Nalesnyik said it was a disappointing end to the game. “At 3-80 we were looking in the box seat and in the end we just weren’t good enough. “We were outclassed by Eka [Madushanka Ekanayaka] who took four wickets and won man of the match. “He was too good for us. We were disappointing with the bat.”

Manser top scored with 33 for Woodend. The result ends what had been a good season for Woodend as they made their first grand final since the 2011-12 season. Nalesnyik said there were some positive signs out of the season. “It’s our first grand final in six-seven years, so in that sense, it’s great to get there in the first place. “We overcame Riddell in the semi-final and they were favourites. “But to get so close it hurts. Hopefully everyone stays around and we can go one better next year.” It was a tough day for Woodend’s C-grade side which also suffered grand final heartache. Woodend was bowled out for just 57 by Sunbury United, in another disappointing performance with the bat. United finished 5-59 to claim the premiership and provide some celebrations in what was a tough year for the club.
Gisborne couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the FFV state league 5 west season. Facing Melton Phoenix, which was relegated during the off season, Gisborne meant business early on and within the space of 11 minutes had opened up a 3-0 lead. Phoenix got one goal back before the break, but the second half was all Gisborne which went on to an easy 7-1 win. Gisborne coach Danny Ciantar was thrilled with the result. “We were good for the first 20 minutes and then got a little bit complacent,” he said. “We raised a few things at half-time and the team then went out and played some great football in the second half.” Several of the off season recruits had an impact on the scoreboard. Jake McIntyre scored four goals, Joseph Cavoli scored twice and Charles Eastwood scored the other goal. Ciantar said the scoreboard clearly showed that McIntyre, who returned from Sunbury United, had played at a higher level. “He has come down from state league 2 and 3 and he is going to have a little bit more time and space,” Ciantar said. “He has the right support around him as well. “They’re putting him in the positions he is so he can have a strike for goal.” The first-year coach said they weren’t getting ahead of themselves, but were pleased with their preparation. “I’m excited at the moment and there’s a really good vibe at the club. “It’s hard to tell where everyone is at. It’ll take five to six rounds for the results starting to come through to understand the good clubs. “We’re not worried about anyone else at the moment.” Gisborne has this weekend off due to the Easter weekend, before facing Melbourne Lions in round two. The Lions are coming off a 5-1 loss to West Point. Ciantar said they were expecting to get some players back from injury and holidays in the next couple of days which will strengthen the side. Commodore stays true blue By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring We’ve just spent a fascinating two days testing the all-new ZB Commodore on public roads – from Melbourne Airport to San Remo in Victoria’s south. That was followed by a great day at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground, where we could push the cars to their limits in safety. Though it’s slightly smaller than the VF, the ZB is almost as spacious inside, with good seating for four adults, five if the three in the back aren’t too big. Importantly, the ZB Commodore is built on all-new architecture and is about 200 kilograms lighter than the VF, making for more performance and lower fuel consumption. Throttle response in the 2.0-litre engine is pretty good and there’s not too much turbo lag. Nine ratios and quick-acting electronics add to the overall performance of the drivetrain. There’s even torque steer and a few moments of tyre squeal from the front wheels when you get stuck into the loud pedal off the line and get all of those 350 Newton metres pumping out. Great fun! The big-gun in the ZB Commodore powertrain is the 3.6-litre V6 all-wheel-drive high-performance unit. It has plenty of punch. Because you don’t have to spin up a turbocharger, it produces virtually instantaneous throttle response. Some may find it almost too sudden in its off-the-line characteristics. We love it! The V6 makes light work of overtaking and is superbly safe because you spend a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road. Ride comfort is good, though there are times some may find it firmer than they like on the models with the larger diameter wheels.

Australian drivers have shown a liking for good handling and are prepared to give up a little comfort to achieve it. Make sure to test drive the ZB on the sort of roads you will normally be using. Note that the feel does vary from model to model, so ensure that the salesperson gets you into the one you like. There is some tyre noise on coarse chip surfaces, particularly on roads that have recently been redone. Having said that, we
have driven many European prestige cars that produce more tyre noise than this new Commodore. Handling sees it able to corner at higher speeds than most owners are ever likely to attempt. There’s very good throttle control, something that’s offered even on the best front-wheel-drive cars these days. Holden engineers are pretty good at setting it up.
All in all, the fifth-generation Holden Commodore is an excellent road car that’s very much suited to Australian conditions, be they in the suburbs or out in the wide, empty outback.
