Time to get egg-cited Children are eagerly awaiting the third annual Easter egg hunt in Malmsbury Botanical Gardens. More than 180 children are expected to gather in the gardens on Good Friday to search for the colourful chocolates, and enjoy the face-painting, pass the parcel and craft activities on offer. The event is run by local couple Tiffany Speight and David Harrod, who also organise Malmsbury’s Christmas carols. Ms Speight said the pair began the two festive events three years ago to create something positive in the town following negative news surrounding Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre. This year they are working with Malmsbury Cricket Club to help fundraise for the club, which is in need of female changerooms. Last year’s Easter egg hunt, which was attended by more than 250 children, raised funds for Malmsbury CFA. Ms Speight said most of the eggs for this year’s hunt had been donated by local businesses, including Malmsbury General Store and Malmsbury Woolworths. Crime on the decline Crime in the Macedon Ranges has decreased for the first time since 2011 amid Victoria’s biggest drop in crime in a decade. The number of recorded incidents has fallen by eight per cent, according to new Crime Statistics Agency data, in line with Victoria’s overall 9.9 per cent decrease. The data also shows Sunbury’s crime rate has remained steady after having consistently increased throughout the past six years. In the Macedon Ranges, a total of 2462 incidents were recorded in the year to December

31, 2017, down from 2678 in the same period in 2016. A drop in recorded drug offences, justice procedures offences and sexual offences is behind the region’s overall decrease in crime. While the number of sexual offences has risen by 16 per cent statewide, the number of offences recorded in the Macedon Ranges dropped from 99 to 68. The area has experienced an increase in non-family violence common assault, up from 180 to 241, and a rise in family violence harassment, from 8 to 29. Motor vehicle theft is at an all-time high for

the Macedon Ranges, with 83 vehicles stolen in 2017, compared to 62 in 2016. Earlier this month, Macedon Ranges local area commander Inspector Chris Large told Star Weekly local police planned to begin a campaign to encourage residents to lock their vehicles. He said a common theme among car thefts was people leaving their vehicles unlocked. Sunbury’s crime rate has remained fairly steady, with 3032 incidents in the year to December 31, 2017, compared to 3038 incidents in 2016. The suburb has experienced an increase in the

number of recorded assaults, both related and unrelated to family violence. Family-violence common assault has risen from 61 incidents in 2016 to 93 incidents in 2017. Hume Inspector Anthony Brown said local police had been striving to increase the number of family violence incident reports. “Family violence is an area that Hume police have been paying close attention to,” the Inspector said. He said the history of people previously not reporting family violence made it difficult to determine whether there had been a rise in the actual number of incidents.

No retreat on Diggers safety bid By Serena Seyfort Pressure for VicRoads to improve safety along a stretch of Vineyard Road is being ramped up. Campaigns for changes to the arterial road by Diggers Rest residents and Melton council are continuing after VicRoads declined to install safety barriers in response to resident fears. Locals are concerned by the number of accidents happening on the road, on which drivers are permitted to travel at 80km/h near Diggers Rest Early Learning Centre, Diggers Rest Medical Centre and houses.

Dale Wright, who lives next door to the early learning centre, said he had been at the scene of four crashes near his property in the past nine months. He said his neighbour had told him she had attended six crashes on the road. But Mr Wright said the number of near-misses was of more concern. “We are constantly hearing people skidding and brakes and tyres screeching,” he said. “People are not realising the road conditions until they get right into it. “Someone’s going to turn the corner and fly right into my house.”

Melton council has moved to write to VicRoads to request it undertake a thorough investigation into incidents on Vineyard Road, reduce the speed limit to 60km/h and immediately install safety barriers. The council previously wrote to VicRoads in November requesting it look at installing safety barriers on the road. In January, VicRoads issued a statement saying it would not install safety barriers. “VicRoads’ assessment found that there are no significant roadside hazards present at this location, vehicles posed no obvious threat of

‘running’ off the road, and the delineation of the road is considered appropriate,” it said. Diggers Rest resident David O’Connor said many residents felt uncomfortable with the possibility that a vehicle could easily leave the road and collide with buildings. Mr O’Connor and other concerned residents contacted Sunbury MP Josh Bull following VicRoads’ decision. Mr Bull has since written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, requesting him to ask VicRoads to review its decision and undertake further investigation.

Mystery drives brigade fundraiser There will be an element of mystery behind the Diggers Rest Fire Brigade’s upcoming fundraiser. Ticket sales have started for the brigade’s inaugural Great Ball of Fire event, a masquerade-themed fundraiser on May 26, to raise money towards a new fire fighting appliance. Fundraising co-ordinator Maree Walshe said that a new fire truck for Diggers Rest would have wide reaching benefits. “A new fire truck will enable our volunteers to

provide the best protection to the community and to the state of Victoria,” Ms Walshe said. “Our brigade operates on a 100 per cent volunteer basis and has been providing essential emergency response services to Diggers Rest, the surrounding districts … since 1969. “Diggers Rest is a township with a long and proud history which in recent times has seen major development and an increase of residents … twice over. “The development has seen a change to our brigade’s primarily rural response area to an

Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol is “reasonably pleased” with the outcome of Victoria Police’s long-weekend operation in the Macedon Ranges compared to the bleak results statewide. Unit commander Sergeant Brad Hall said no collisions or road trauma were reported in the region during Operation Arid, which ran from Friday, March 9 until Monday, March 12. Throughout the four-day period, highway patrol officers patrolled Macedon Ranges roads, apprehending five drink drivers, 26 drivers speeding, and three unregistered vehicles. Police caught one disqualified driver, one disobeying traffic signals, one seatbelt offence, one mobile phone offence and impounded one vehicle. Sergeant Hall said while any number of offences was too many, the number of recorded offences was relatively low across the area. He said the unit was “overall reasonably pleased” with what it found. “More than 1000 breath tests were conducted,” he said. No one was caught driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Across Victoria, six people were killed, more than 500 drink and drug drivers were caught and 3129 speeding offences were detected. Road policing command assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said the results were concerning and marked an increase on the same period in 2017. “It is frustrating and just terribly sad that over the weekend another six families now face the true reality of road trauma.”

Communities rally behind kids By Serena Seyfort The Sunbury and Diggers Rest communities have thrown their support behind fundraisers for the children of a Diggers Rest woman who was killed earlier this month. Money, food and services have been offered to two fundraisers set up by friends of 29-year-old Katherine ‘Katie’ Haley, who was found dead by emergency services at a Fairfield Crescent property about 11pm on March 9.

A 28-year-old Diggers Rest man has since been charged with her murder. Within just two days last week, 143 people had donated $10,020 to an online fund called Katie Haley’s Legacy, set up for Ms Haley’s two children. The fund’s blurb describes Ms Haley as “a beautiful and loving mother” of a six-year-old and a 10-month-old. “We are setting up this fundraiser in order to give the children the fresh start they so

desperately deserve,” it reads. “The ultimate goal is to give these two children the best possible future and financial support so they can fulfil the life Katie was working so hard to provide them with. “These two beautiful children will be the living memory of beautiful Katie girl, and all the love and support these children will grow up with as a result of her compassionate and selfless personality.” A friend of Ms Haley has also organised

The Haley Children Fundraiser, to be held at Sunbury Heights Primary School on Saturday, May 26 to raise money for the children’s future. Local businesses and community members have made offers of donations for the event. Ms Haley was a pupil at Sunbury Heights Primary School. Principal Kaye Mills said the school was supporting the event, but was also going to do something different as a school community to support the children and remember Ms Haley.

Double and triple support for mums A growing number of multiple births in the Macedon Ranges has led to the council creating a new playgroup. The Macedon Ranges Multiples Playgroup offers support for parents of twins and triplets and enables them to get in contact with parents in similar situations. Families are able to meet, support and share experiences of life with multiples weekly in a family-friendly environment. The group began this month after local families and maternal and child health nurses identified a need for better support. V/Line results

V/Line trains on the Bendigo line were more punctual and more reliable in February than they were in January, but continued to fall short of punctuality targets. Vineyard Road Shared User Path Works starting late March 2018 VicRoads is building a new shared user path to provide a north-south connection for pedestrians and bicycles travelling from Diggers Rest to Sunbury via Vineyard Road.

The new path will connect the existing off-road path at the Calder Freeway ramps south of Vineyard Road and at Moore Road north of Vineyard Road, and it will also improve safety and for pedestrians and bicycles with new pavement resurfacing, signage and safety barriers installed. Tip shop to reduce waste

By Esther Lauaki Troy “Tee Mac” prides himself on being an unconventional motivational speaker. The heavily tattooed former gang member turned musician is on a mission to help kids achieve their goals. Tee Mac, his stage name, is spreading his positive message by coaching a Sunbury youth basketball team on Saturdays – but he wants to take his anti-bullying program into schools throughout the west. The Melton resident is calling on schools and the council to talk more about bullying and gang culture. He said that his efforts to promote the program in more than 200 schools in the west has been met with resistance. “I’ve been trying my hardest to get the program into the schools but it’s almost as if nobody wants to admit that there is a problem,” Tee Mac said. “You can’t get someone in to talk to these kids if they haven’t lived through it. You need someone like me, who knows what it’s like. “I want young people to know that they are not alone and there’s always someone that you can turn to and it doesn’t have to be in gangs.” Tee Mac joined a gang between the ages of 17 to 22 in Broadmeadows after being bullied through school. It was only through music and self belief that he decided to turn his life around, he said. “The idea came about through my life experiences,” Tee Mac said. “I had been bullied all throughout primary school and high school and eventually I found myself in the wrong crowd when I left high school. “I felt accepted by them … but I was fortunate enough not to get into any trouble.

“When I was in my early 20s my best mate died in a basketball accident and it made me think that I have to do something positive with my life because you never know how long you’ve got.” The main aim of Tee Mac’s program is to teach kids to stay on a positive path. “I took on music and ended up touring

around Australia, America and Europe,” he said. “If I can survive the loss of my best friend, my first daughter, my father and my pop who was a second father to me … and still go on to achieve my goals, then I want to help kids do the same. “If I can inspire kids to achieve what they want to achieve … it will be worth it.”

A tip top place to get pre-loved items has popped up in Kyneton, as Macedon Ranges council seeks to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. The council has opened a tip shop at the Kyneton Transfer Station, located at 140 Redesdale Road, where residents can find free and cheap second-hand goods that would otherwise go to waste. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said there were “some treasures to be found” at the shop, ranging from kids bikes to furniture and DIY items. “We are looking at the items people bring to our transfer stations as a potential resource, rather than something to be disposed of, and that means less waste going to landfill,” Cr Anderson said. Staff will select items that they deem to be reusable and in good condition from what is brought to the tip, and will display them at the shop for a bargain cost. Proceeds from the trial shop will help cover some of its operating costs. The store will be open when the transfer station is open – on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Lost locks a great gift By Serena Seyfort A Gisborne girl and her mum lost their locks as part of the popular World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser last week. The pair created quite a buzz when they shaved their heads at the grounds of Gisborne Secondary College. The college supported their cause by holding a ‘crazy hair’ fundraiser. Donna Macdonald said her 12-year-old

daughter Takitah had always wanted to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave but decided to do it after her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer last year. Prior to the cut, Takitah raised almost $900 for the Leukaemia Foundation going from door-to-door in her Gisborne neighbourhood. A hairdresser attended Gisborne Secondary College last Thursday to shave the heads of the mother and daughter.

Mrs Macdonald said the school organised a ‘crazy hair’ fundraiser in its junior unit to accompany the event, with participating year 7 and 8 students donating a gold coin to the cause. Mrs Macdonald said she only decided two days before the event to lob off her own locks as an offer of support for Takitah. “I’m so proud of her,” Mrs Macdonald said. A new program to combat a biosecurity threat to Victoria’s wine industry was launched at Mount Macedon last week. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas joined Mount Macedon Winery owner Dylan Grimes at his property to announce a $1 million state funding package to create a long-term strategy to manage Phylloxera in Victoria. The small insect feeds on grapevine roots and leaves and can kill grapevines. Eradicating Phylloxera was identified as a priority in the Victorian Wine Industry Development Strategy. “Phylloxera poses a real threat to Victoria’s viticulture industry,” Ms Thomas said. “We must tackle it head on.” Mr Grimes said collaboration was important for dealing with the issue. “The Victorian wine industry is a team game,” Mr Grimes said. “We all need to be on the same side to stop the spread of Phylloxera.” Agriculture Victoria will carry out the program over three years in Victoria’s grape-growing regions. A key element will involve surveying vineyards to ensure they are free of the insect and zoning them as Phylloxera Exclusion Zones. Chainsaw club cuts stereotype A program designed to help women build independence is being piloted in the Macedon Ranges. As part of Women’s Chainsaw Club, up to 10 women will next month have the opportunity to develop skills in chainsaw use, safety, design, carving and emergency preparedness. The Macedon Ranges initiative is a collaboration of Macedon Ranges council, Lancefield Neighbourhood House and Benloch CFA, with funding from the CFA Summer Local Initiatives Grant Program. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said she was proud the council was involved. “Knowing how to handle a chainsaw has historically been a skill associated with men, so it’s great to be able to challenge this stereotype,” Cr Anderson said. “This program is open to all women in the areas of Lancefield, Benloch and Cobaw, with preference given to women in higher fire risk areas, single parent families, women in isolation and those experiencing financial hardship.” The design and sculpting components of the training will be run by founder of all-female chainsaw group Chainsaw Chix, Angie Polglaze. More than 500 cars and motorbikes are expected to convene in Sunbury for the annual Kruze 4 Kids Car Show. Held on Good Friday, the fundraiser is back for the seventh time – and it’s set to be even bigger than before. Organiser Brad Radclyffe said he expected more than 500 cars to attend this year, compared to the 400 in 2017. “This year we have a whole new range of cars coming out,” Mr Radclyffe said. “Car clubs from all over Victoria have jumped on board.” He said people were coming from as far as South Australia and New South Wales to be a part of the show and contend for the trophies. “We have absolutely every type of car at the event.” But the day is not just for car lovers. The fundraiser also offers ‘family fun’, including live music, market stalls, pony rides, raffles, auctions and a selection of food. All proceeds from the day will go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Mr Radclyffe started the car show to give back to the hospital after spending a lot of time there as a child. It has raised more than $50,000 in the past seven years. Craig Rudolph, who has opened a Sunbury branch, is a man with 40 years’ skin in the game. He believes he and Elders Insurance, a company owned by QBE, one of Australia’s largest insurers, make a good fit. He opened his office in Sunbury in late 2017 in order to meet growing demand for his services. MY PLACE What’s your connection to Sunbury? My husband and I moved here in 1990 – 27 years ago. All three of our boys went to primary and secondary school in Sunbury. They all played tennis at Mt Carmel Tennis Club and I used to play at Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club. I still play with friends and we move between different clubs. Two of my boys and I play at Sunbury and District Table Tennis Association.

What do you like about Sunbury? It’s not really a country town but it’s still separate from the rest of Melbourne. We don’t have traffic and population like in the other suburbs of Melbourne. It’s a bit slower-paced. But Sunbury also has everything here – you don’t actually need to leave Sunbury if you don’t want to. You can do all your shopping, all your sport – you can just about do everything.

Do you have a favourite place and activity locally? Sunbury and District Table Tennis Club, and the cafes and the restaurants in Sunbury. During the day I’ll often meet people for a coffee. I think the restaurants and cafes are really good in Sunbury. Tell us about your involvement with Sunbury and District Table Tennis Association. How did you get involved?

If you could change anything about Sunbury, what would it be? Most people probably would say the same thing: it’s just a pity that Sunbury grew so fast and that it wasn’t realised 20 years ago how Sunbury was going to grow so much, in terms of the infrastructure and the shops and the station and the parking. Sunbury just grew too fast for what it was in the first place. But, other than that, no – I love Sunbury as it is. I’ve been playing for the association since it started in 2012. Both my children, who at the time were 12 and 14, were asked by their friends to play. I used to go there every week to watch. Then the club asked me to fill in and then I started playing. I used to play table tennis when I was a kid as well. I’m a level one coach and at the moment I coach the female-only ping-pong sessions, which run every Friday. This program is free

These services include family childcare; therapies and support for families concerned about their child’s development; older adults needing counselling; physiotherapy; and other health services. Last year, Sunbury Community Health became an Approved Home Care Package Provider. Home Care Packages, part of an Australian government program, provides money to buy services for older people (generally 65 years of age or older) to live well and safely within their home and community. Services can include things such as occupational therapy, podiatry, physiotherapy, home help and other community or family supports. Sunbury Community Health harnesses local knowledge to help older people find and access health, home and lifestyle services in the community. Each person who receives Home Care Package funding will also get a care manager to help organise the supports they need. One of the Sunbury Community Health Home Care Package care managers is Maria, a social worker with more than 20 years’ experience working with people older than 65 and people living with disabilities.

Another member of this happy crew is Anne Ho, an oral health therapy student who has a special gift with children. “We all take a real interest in children – and adults for that matter – to ease any fears they may have and to ensure their experience with us is a good one,” Thi says. “We meet lots of children when we visit

Sunbury joins the Mambourin family Mambourin, one of the biggest disability service providers in Melbourne’s north-west, will officially open its latest community hub this month – at Brook Street, Sunbury. It will be the organisation’s first Hume branch.

ohan Braddy, Mambourin’s chief executive, says the opening symbolises the organisation’s commitment to ensuring adults living with disabilities have greater choice of services and better connections to opportunities. “We know there is already enormous demand for disability services in Hume,” he says. “To be able to provide people with more choice and a huge range of flexible services is incredibly exciting, not just for us, but for the entire community.” Since its foundation in 1972, Mambourin has established seven community hubs for adults with disabilities, with locations ranging from Altona and Melton to Bacchus Marsh and, now, Sunbury. Mambourin’s fleet of community buses enables inter-site travel, giving people the chance to choose from a wide range of experiences. “Everyone is different and has different goals in life,” Rohan says. “Our team knows that you have to get to know people, listen to them, understand them, and only then can you shape services that suit them as an individual.” With more than 100 social and community interest groups, respite and recreation activities, life skills assistance and around-the-clock support alternatives, Mambourin also offers supported

employment options via the Mambourin Training Centre in Derrimut. It opened in 2017 to offer traineeship opportunities to VCAL students with disabilities. Mambourin has a dedicated NDIS team that deals specifically with people wanting to get the most out of the scheme. Established last year, the team, including NDIS transition manager Lavinia Tukuafu, has been educating people on what to expect from the scheme. “A huge focus for us has been preparing people for the NDIS,” Lavinia says. “This means helping them set goals, but also taking them through the NDIS process, making it easy to understand so they know exactly what they are entitled to. “The NDIS, which began its roll-out in Hume this month, has met with a mixed reception. “Problems with the scheme’s implementation and confusion over what participants are entitled to have plagued the scheme. “We have seen that when people are prepared, and we have gone through their planning for them, the results have been successful. “But people have reason to be anxious … at least we can make that journey as simple as possible,” Lavinia says. A matter of love and learning Laura Hansen is a paediatric speech pathologist who has children making snails and planting flowers in pots they’ve decorated themselves. It’s all part of her fun-focused multi-sensory approach to helping children reach successful speech outcomes.

She brings her skills to children aged from two to 12, developing their communication and social skills, confidence and self-esteem – and she encourages parents to stay and be involved in the sessions. Each term, Laura chooses a theme on which to base her therapy. “At the moment, it’s gardens,” she says. “We’ve been using sensory bins filled with the likes of gum leaves, wood, pine cones and sand; craft activities, like making snails; board games; picture storybooks about gardens; and painting, play dough, puzzles, and toys such as felt gardens.” While Laura is very much about fun and making speech pathology sessions engaging for children, she’s also a professional with loads of work and life experience. “It was after completing a bachelor of health sciences/master of speech pathology that I decided on a career in paediatric speech pathology,” she says. “It was a natural fit for me because I love working with children and creating a fun learning environment. “I worked as an au pair in France, at the same time teaching English to children aged between three and seven at the local primary school. When I came back, I supported a local prep/grade 1 teacher.”

Calder Cannons are primed for the TAC Cup after a big pre-season. The Cannons, who have been training since late last year, have had six practice games including an intra-club match in the lead-up to the season. New Cannons coach Ross Smith said while it might seem like a lot of games for a pre-season, itâ€™s given them plenty of opportunities to look at different players. â€œWe started with 86 players and weâ€™re now down to 54,â€? he said. â€œWeâ€™ve been really happy with the preparation. Weâ€™ve played a lot of games, but only started playing our strongest team over the last couple of weeks. â€œWe were trying to give the guys in the region every chance to show us what they can do in the early games.â€? Smith said they had slightly more top age players in the squad than bottom age players, with a number stepping up from last season. He said they had a strong group of players, with the 17-year-olds that have come up complementing the existing players. Smith said there were a number of players who had stood out during the pre-season. â€œTy Browning has really stepped up and not missed a session,â€? he said. â€œJake Riccardi and Mitchell Podhajski are 19-years-old and have done quite well. â€œThe three academy boys, Jack Bytel, Rhylee West and Curtis Taylor, only played the two games and they have stepped up.â€?

Smith said others to stand out were Lucas Cavallaro, who would play down back with father-son possibility Mason Fletcher; Brodie Newman who has shown something up forward; Jack Evans as a defender who can go into the midfield; and ruckman Devereux Pretty who will add some size to the midfield. Sam Graham, Shane Skidmore, Jeremy Oâ€™Sullivan, Nathan Croft, Ismail Moussa and Lachlan Sholl are other players to have good pre-seasons, according to Smith. The three academy boy sand Fletcher are seen as the Cannonsâ€™ top draft prospects heading into the season. West, son of Scott, is on the radar of the Western Bulldogs as a father-son pick, and Fletcher, son of Dustin, is in the same situation. Smith, who took on the coaching role late last year, said he was enjoying the challenge. â€œItâ€™s been terrific,â€? he said. â€œItâ€™s cut-throat in the AFL and the TAC Cup promoted different things. Itâ€™s about the development of players and getting them drafted. â€œItâ€™s been a productive pre-season and hopefully it progresses into the season.â€? The Cannons start their season on Friday night under lights against the Western Jets. Bulls eye cricket grand final after cutting down Romsey A second straight loss to Bacchus Marsh has ended Romsey’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season. After previously facing off in the final round of the season, in a game the Bulls dominated, Romsey was looking to turn the tables in the semi-final at the weekend. Playing finals for the first time in eight years, Romsey got off to the worst possible start, losing its two star batsmen Chris Burkett and Ben Way, before the score reached double figures. The two are both in the top-10 run scorers for the season and the key to Romsey’s batting line-up. Aaron Paterson and Damian Devlin were soon back in the shed as well, as Romsey was in trouble at 4-37. Romsey steadied and at 5-124 the innings was evenly poised.

The Bulls stepped up a level and returned to playing the cricket they had all season, taking three quick wickets. The Romsey tail wagged to get the score to 200. Matthew Hoyt top-scored for Romsey with 63, while Mitchell Clement and Adam Frost provided handy contributions down the order. The Bulls started well before losing both openers in the space of three runs and soon found themselves at 4-91. With plenty of batters in the shed, the Bulls didn’t panic and set about getting the job done. James Lidgett was the key to the Bulls’ innings, with a patient 76 before being run out, with the winning total in sight. The Bulls didn’t have any issues, finishing 5-201 to seal their grand final spot. Alex Porter finished 52 not out.

Paterson took three wickets for Romsey. The win leaves the Bulls seeking the perfect season with only Woodend standing in their way. Woodend made it through to the grand final, with a strong win against Riddell. Both sides will be playing to end McIntyre Cup premiership droughts of more than 10 years. Tara Murray

Ashfield out on a high By Tara Murray The Ashfield first XI players experienced mixed emotions after their season came to an end in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade semi-finals. There was disappointment – but there was also lots of positivity about the development of the playing group. Ashfield avoided relegation at the end of last season only because the number of clubs in the B-grade competition was expanding to 10. The development of the side from wooden spooner to finalist has president and first XI player Nathan Anderson thrilled with the season as a whole. “We won five games as a club as a whole last season,” he said. “This season, our top grade side won eight alone, so we made massive inroads. “Our second side is through to the grand final. It’s the first time that’s happened in my eight years at the club.” The first XI’s season came to an end at the hands of St Anthonys at the weekend. Electing to bat, Ashfield was in trouble early on. Eventually the team was bowled out 165, well short of the target the players had set themselves. Anderson said they knew they didn’t have enough runs on the board. It could have been worse if not for a late 50-run partnership between Anderson and Lachlan Read. “You need almost 300 against them to feel comfortable,” he said. “We were confident that we could get the runs as it’s a simple game and we were hopeful of going well.” Ashfield needed early wickets to put the Saints on the back foot, but they failed to eventuate. The Saints were 0-38 at stumps on day one. Anderson said their bowling performance was much better on day two. They had a glimpse of hope when they took 4-10 as the Saints slipped to 4-54. That would be the end of the wickets, with the Saints finishing 4-169 to claim the win. Ashfield shared the wickets around. The Saints will play Wallan in the grand final, after the Magpies beat Eynesbury. The Magpies made 254, then restricted the Eagles to 210. Ashfield’s second XI will play St Anthonys in the E-grade grand final. Ashfield, which claimed the minor premiership, made 9-238 from its overs before restricting Bacchus Marsh to 180. “This is massive for the club,” Anderson said. “They are up and about and excited for what’s ahead of them next weekend.”

Close call to help Riddell on and off court Lauren Close is back for a second tilt as playing coach of Riddell’s A-grade side in the Riddell District Netball League. The star defender coached the Bombers to a premiership in 2015 – her only year as coach, before stepping down from the role to concentrate on just playing. She was part of the Bombers 2016 premiership team, before moving to Darwin last season. Having returned to the area, the club was keen to get her back on board. During her previous four years in the competition, Close was one of the best players on court. She took out the competition best and fairest in 2014 and was joint runner-up in 2016. “We moved back from Darwin a little bit earlier than anticipated,” she said of her and partner, Bombers forward James Nolan. “Eliza [Allen] had to stand down from coaching due to other commitments. Once Riddell heard we were back and had signed James up for football, they approached me about the role.” Close said it was sometimes difficult being a playing-coach, but she was keen to support the club and put something back into netball. “I love giving back to netball and doing what I can to help the club.” Close said pre-season had been good and that there had been a lot of interest from local players. “There has been an influx of players from the area and pre-season numbers have been pretty good,” she said. “It’s a similar team to last year, with the inclusion of a couple of girls, including myself. “The focus is on bringing through the local girls to A-grade.” She said it looked like they had lost a couple of girls to football, but were hopeful fixtures would work in their favour and the players could be dual athletes. The Bombers finished seventh last season, with a gap between them and the top sides. Close said the younger players would benefit from last year and making the step up into the A-grade team. The Bombers start their season on April 7 against Macedon.

Jets off to a flyer as their premiership defence begins The Sunbury Jets started their Big V women’s state championship defence in perfect fashion with a strong win against Hume City Broncos on Saturday night. The Jets set the win up in the first half, dominating the first two quarters and had what proved to be a match-winning lead at the main break. The Jets came out of the blocks firing and were quickly out to a 13-point lead at quarter-time. They continued their form in the second quarter to extend the margin. The Broncos didn’t go away, restricting the Jets to just nine points in the third quarter, but couldn’t put the points on the board themselves to put a real dint in the margin. The Broncos continued to push, but it was too little too late, as the Jets won 69-55. Orla O’Reilly top-scored with 23 points, while Chelsea Burns and Josie Stockill also scored double figures for the new-look Jets. Former Australian Opal Elyce Penaluna scored eight points in her debut for the Jets. The Jets announced the signing of Penaluna during the week.

Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said before Saturday night’s match they were excited to have signed someone of Penaluna’s ability to the side. “We’re rapt,” he said of signing the 193-centimetre forward. “I’ve spoken to her and we’ve said we don’t want to rely on her every game to be a superstar. “In some games she will be, but our team understands the strength of our team is we don’t have to rely on one player and we will have different players stand up. “The girls will be better for the experience that she brings.” Penaluna spent last season playing for the Melbourne Tigers in the South East Australian Basketball League, after a few injury riddled years in the Women’s National Basketball League. She played with Melbourne Boomers and Bendigo Spirit in the WNBL. Kereama, who coached against Penaluna in the WNBL and as the New Zealand Tall Ferns coach, said he was encouraged by what he had seen on the practice court.

“We’re hoping she will have a great season,” he said. “I’ve seen her when she was at her best and she looks like she’s moving fine. We’re not relying on her to play 30 plus minutes every game. “The playing group is excited. Chels [Chelsea Burns] has played with her before and you can see that connection on the court. “Courtenay Wragg has had some experience with being around a team with her too.” The Jets’ men’s side lost both their matches. Bowlers’ grand effort By Tara Murray After a number of near misses in recent seasons, Woodend has finally made it to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final. Looking for its first top grade premiership since 2003-04, only Bacchus Marsh now stands between Woodend and the trophy. Woodend continued its good late-season form with a solid win against Riddell in the semi-final. Day one started well for Riddell and they looked good at 1-77. Enter Peter Manser and Warren Else. The two turned the game in Woodend’s favour with a brilliant display of bowling. Between them they took 6-10 to see the Bombers crumble to 7-87. The Bombers were eventually bowled out for just 142. James Hughes, who came in at number nine, top-scored with 39. Matthew Livingstone and Craig Ballinger

both also scored 30s but there was little other support. Manser finishing with 7-70 off 21 overs, following on from the six wickets he took the round before. Michael Nalesnyik said Manser was a player who thrived on pressure and it brought out the best in him. He said going into day one, he would have been happy to restrict the Bombers to 142. “There was highs and lows for both sides,” Nalesnyik said. “It was a low-scoring affair and everyone stuck together. It wasn’t the highest score in the world, but in finals it’s still a score on the board.” Woodend got to 2-39 at stumps on day one. With a long batting line-up, Nalesnyik was confident they could make it to the desired score, but it wasn’t without a few nerves. “Our batting is quite deep and one of our strong points of our side,” he said. “We got the job done seven wickets down. It would have been nice to only have a couple

wickets down, it would have reduced the stress levels a little.” Woodend finished 7-147. Marcus Stewart top-scored with 43 at the top of the order, while Josh Eastley hit a run a ball 30 lower down. Matt Darby, Matthew Livingstone and James Hughes took two wickets apiece for the Bombers. The win sets up a grand final clash with undefeated Bacchus Marsh which made it through to the grand final via a solid win against Romsey. The only time the two teams met this season, Woodend was missing several key players and lost. Nalesnyik said the evenness of his side was the key heading into the grand final. “Everyone is rapt and it’ll be a really good week,” he said. “It’s another match to be played and we’re looking forward to this week.” Woodend is looking for its first McIntyre premiership since 2003-04.

There were double celebrations for Gisborne on Saturday as the club claimed two Central Highlands Bowls Division premierships. Facing Kyneton Golf and Kyneton in the division 1 and division 2 grand finals, Gisborne was pushed all the way in both matches. Gisborne president Ian Ball said it was a special moment as the club claimed the double for the first time. Graham Quaife’s rink was the difference in the division 1 grand final. His was Gisborne’s only winning rink with a scoreline of 29-15. The sides split two rinks and Gisborne suffered a loss in the fourth rink as it won 99 (14)-86 (4) in a match between the two most recent premiers. Ball said Quaife was keen to atone after dropping his rink in the club’s semi-final loss to Golf. He said that in hindsight, losing that final worked out well, giving them the chance to have another week on the Lancefield green where all finals were played. “He is our most senior player,” Ball said. “He got beaten in the second semi and was very determined in the preliminary final. He’s been at the club about 35 years and hasn’t had a lot of success until the last few years.” The win sealed a second straight division 1 premiership for Gisborne, after it broke a long drought last year. Ball said the second title was just as enjoyable in what was a tight competition all season. Ball himself played a key role in the division 2 premiership, with the Gisborne Red team beating Kyneton. Just three shots separated the teams at tea before Ball’s rink put its foot down to seal the 75 (12)-63 (4) win. Ball’s rink won 32-13 with the other two rinks both close. Ball said the club was thrilled with how the season had panned out on and off the green. He said the club would be hosting a tournament in early April that would be a good end to the season. Upgraded Prado packs a punch By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring For the 2018 season, Toyota has upgraded its Prado range, with a facelift and tail tuck, a revised interior and additional infotainment and safety technology. Our test vehicle was the LandCruiser Prado topline model, the Kakadu. Not cheap at $84,490 but do you get a substantial amount of vehicle for your money. And the price has been trimmed by $1121 compared to the model it has just superceded. The new grille is big and bold with broad vertical bars flanked by restyled headlamps (bi-LED on GXL, VX and our test Kakadu). The main beams have been positioned slightly further inboard to reduce the chances of damage when off-road driving. At the rear, there are new lamp clusters and a smaller garnish incorporated within the number-plate surround. The bonnet is now sculpted in the centre to enhance downward visibility, which is particularly useful in serious off-road driving. The front guards have been re-profiled and the lower corners of the front and rear bumpers now kick upwards, again to enhance off-road running. Inside, LandCruiser Prado has a redesigned dashboard, instrument binnacle and switches. The centre console now incorporates a flush-surface air-conditioning control panel. The sound system has decent quality and is easy to control through the 8.0-inch touchscreen. It loses FM radio too early for our liking â€“ after all this is a vehicle designed to go big distances and well away from civilisation and itâ€™s nice to have decent entertainment. AM works fine, itâ€™s just that the sound quality isnâ€™t there. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are sadly

lacking, but there is Bluetooth connectivity. Ah, well â€Ś looks like you will have to sit around the campfire and tell tall tales and do your own singing. All Prados now use the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel as sales of the petrol unit in the previous models were minimal. The diesel has an electronically controlled common-rail direct-injection system that develops 130 kW at just 3400 rpm. Thereâ€™s 450 Nm of torque between 1600 and 2400 rpm

when sitting in front of a six-speed automatic transmission. When mated to a six-speed manual transmission, only offered on Prado GX or GXL, the engine is tuned slightly differently and develops peak torque of 420 Nm from 1400 to 2600 rpm. Advanced safety features now standard on all LandCruiser Prado automatic models are pre-collision safety system (PCS) with autonomous emergency braking and

pedestrian detection, active cruise control (ACC), lane departure alert and auto high beam. PCS and ACC were previously exclusive to the topline Kakadu. Towing capacity for all automatic models has been increased by 500kg to 3000kg and a rear differential lock has been added to auto GXL and VX grades. The pre-collision safety system can now detect impact risks with pedestrians as well as vehicles. This is a real 4WD so getting in and out can be a bit of a climb/drop for some people due to the high ground clearance. Kids will love it, but grandparents who are getting on in years should be taken along on your pre-purchase test drive. This is a large vehicle that can be a handful in tight carparks, but on the road â€“ and off it â€“ the big Toyota is smooth, quiet and very comfortable. It really does feel almost limo like in that spacious cabin. Engine performance from the turbo-diesel is good without being exciting. Thereâ€™s no real turbo lag and the fact that the engine is already at its torque peak by 1600 revs means it lopes along with ease, climbs hills without breathing hard and can carry a load of people and luggage without the driver noticing any significant difference. Fuel consumption was in the eight to nine litres per hundred kilometre range on motorways and country cruising. Around town itâ€™s more likely to be in the 10 to 15 litre range depending on traffic and your driving style. Overall the looks of the latest Prado really impress us.
