SunFest to shine on Sunbury’s traditional, old-fashioned community fair is back for its 42nd year – and it’s going to be bigger and better than before. SunFest will take over the town on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19, offering free entertainment and fun. Run entirely by volunteers, the event has previously brought together up to 30,000 people as it supports a number of local charities and causes. SunFest vice president Natalie Harrison said the committee had prepared a “bigger and more exciting” fair for 2018. Ms Harrison said she was excited to announce a torchlight parade would be returning after years of absence. “The torchlight parade is back,” she said. “We will have the CFA and other emergency service volunteers marching along O’Shanassy Street and finishing on the Village Green at dusk on Saturday night.” The organisers have also brought back the SunFest RunFest. “We are raising money for Challenge – supporting kids with Cancer and CareWorks SunRanges supporting those during difficult times,” Ms Harrison said. “There is a two-kilometre colour run for the kids and five-kilometre and 10 kilometre events.” For information visit www.SunFest.org. au Sam D’Angelo from Barry Plant Real Estate and Vic Scerri from Vics Food and Wine with the new Sunfest mascot. Mental health cash help By Serena Seyfort Up to $1 million will be spent boosting youth mental health services in the Macedon Ranges in a bid to help reduce the region’s higher-than-average suicide rates. Service providers can apply for funding through the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network to establish programs to help youth. Network deputy chief executive Julie Borninkhof said the federal government funding could be used to help provide intensive youth support through

psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health nurses. Ms Borninkhof said Public Health Information Development Unit data shows suicide rates in the Macedon Ranges are about 40 per cent higher than the Australian average across all age groups. She said the funding targeted youth because “healthy communities stop young people going on to be vulnerable”. Network chief executive and adjunct associate professor Christopher Carter said the goal of the funding was not just to put more money into services, but to create a

system that was accessible, integrated and adaptable to the needs of young people, their carers and families. He said the funding is not intended to duplicate existing services and the health network will help service providers to develop collaborative approaches. Applications for the funding will open soon, with new services expected to begin operating during the second half of 2018. The funding follows calls from Macedon Ranges and Sunbury residents for greater mental health help for young people. The tight-knit communities took to social

media in October in a plea for help. “We need to be doing more,” one resident posted on Facebook. “Too many members of our community have been prematurely taken from us.” Macedon Ranges council has also announced it will conduct more of its Youth Mental Health First Aid courses this year. Vehicle stolen at school pick-up By Serena Seyfort Seven vehicles in Gisborne were broken into in one night last week and a mum had her car stolen while she was metres away when picking up her child from school the week before. Macedon Ranges local area commander Christopher Large confirmed there had been a “slight increase” in motor vehicle theft and theft from vehicles in the past four months. That follows a 66.7 per cent increase in vehicles stolen in the year to September 30,

2017 according to Crime Statistics Agency data. Data shows there were 80 vehicles stolen in the area in the 12 month period to September, compared to 48 in the previous 12 months. Marianne Tootell told Star Weekly her daughter had her car stolen when she was picking up her child from Hesket Primary School in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday, February 20. Ms Tootell said she was particularly concerned by what she described as the targeted nature of the theft, which occurred

in an isolated area outside the small, “tucked away” school at 3.36pm. She said two males in their mid-20s parked so close to her daughter’s car on Bowens Road that she had to reverse and re-park to create enough distance between the vehicles to get her baby from the car. Ms Tootell said her daughter then left the car unlocked with the keys inside while she went just metres to the school gate to pick up her child. Police said witnesses saw one of the men jump in her car before both vehicles sped off.

Five Kings to rule Romsey’s night life Nightlife is about to take a step up in Romsey. Five Kings Cafe has just been granted a permit for a liquor licence and permission to more than double its capacity from 30 patrons to 76. Cafe owner and manager Vanessa Meredith said the business would also extend its opening hours on Sunday to Wednesday from 7am-8pm and on Thursday to Saturday from 7am-11pm to offer more evening meals. Ms Meredith said once the business had a liquor licence, which could take about six weeks, it would be able to offer “tapas and wine bar” style meals, as well as regular tastings and events. She said the extended business hours would also help the venue take on more hospitality trainees. Macedon Ranges council approved the cafe’s application for a liquor licence permit and waived a requirement for the restaurant to provide an extra 10 carparking spaces at its February 28 meeting. The council agreed to waive the required parking because most other Romsey businesses would be closed at the restaurant’s busiest times. “We need life back in Romsey,” councillor Henry Bleeck told the meeting. Councillor Bill West agreed, saying: “lots of things have happened to Romsey”, including the recent loss of the town’s only pub. Ms Meredith said the business was planning to apply for council permission to host regular live music events in the future. The business presently can apply to host live music at occasional events.

Inspector Large is encouraging residents to lock their vehicles but not be alarmed by the rise in theft. He said there was a common theme of people leaving their vehicles unlocked. “The Macedon Ranges, generally speaking, is a very safe place to be – but it’s not immune to crime,” he said. He said the seven vehicles broken into in Gisborne on February 28 had been left unlocked. Valuables such as laptops were stolen from the cars. Police recovered some of the items from an abandoned property.

Guy split talk rouses council Hume council has asked to meet “urgently” with Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, saying it had not been consulted about the Liberals’ plan to make Sunbury a stand-alone municipality if the party is successful in the state election. Councillors say they are disappointed to have first heard the policy had been put “back on the table” in a January 9 Star Weekly story. At the council’s February 26 meeting, six of the 11 councillors spoke about the idea of Sunbury splitting from Hume, emphasising the “enormous amount of anxiety and concern” caused when the idea was on the table in 2014-15. Several speakers outlined reasons why plans to cut Sunbury’s ties with Hume had fallen over in 2015 and suggested reasons why it could again in the future. Hume council sent a written request to meet Mr Guy following the Star Weekly article in January. In an interview with Star Weekly last month, Mr Guy said he had not recently discussed the matter with the council and he would understand if it felt “under siege” on the issue. Last week he confirmed the policy had been a long-term goal for the party. The idea to establish a City of Sunbury was prominent back in 2013 when the Liberal government undertook a plebiscite on Hume residents’ opinions on the issue. The poll showed residents favoured a split, but the Andrews government abandoned the idea in October, 2015, after independent auditors advised against it, claiming it would come at a significant financial cost to residents.

Cost buffer for Ranges recycling By Serena Seyfort The state government is helping Macedon Ranges council to pay the increased cost of continuing its recycling service while the council finds a long-term solution. The Victorian government will support councils and the industry until June 30 in continuing kerbside collection of household recyclables and waste through a $13 million package announced last month. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the funding would ease the burden of the

unbudgeted extra recycling cost that has arisen since China restricted its intake of recyclables. “This gives us time to work with our contractor to develop a longer-term solution,” she said. “Without the government’s assistance, we would have been forced to use thousands of dollars of ratepayers’ money every week just to keep the kerbside recycling collection going.” Macedon Ranges council is one of several Victorian councils paying increased costs to keep using recycling giant Visy to dispose of recyclables since China’s new National

Sword Policy significantly disrupted recycling markets in January. Visy’s increased expenses in meeting China’s new standards has flowed on to the councils and organisations using its service. Macedon Ranges council said it was working with the industry and the Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group to find a long-term solution. Assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the Macedon Ranges was “well positioned” to deal with the situation. He said the council potentially had the

capacity to clean recycled material itself, which it was investigating. Mr Thornton has advised residents to keep recycling and to “keep it clean” – meaning not mixing different types of recyclables, such as putting tin cans inside plastic bags. Hume mayor Geoff Porter is encouraging residents to sort their recycling and be mindful of the waste hierarchy while putting out their recycling bins as usual. Hume council has said its recycling services will continue unchanged and has not been impacted by the industry issue.

No limit on trail’s reach Macedon Ranges Art Trail’s largest show will take place just outside the region this long weekend. Sunbury’s The Boilerhouse Gallery will host the Eclectica exhibition, as the local group reaches out to its newer, wider-reaching connections. Macedon Ranges Art Trail (MRAT) manager Nadine Hartnett said the historic setting of the Boilerhouse was the home of Sunbury Art Society, which joined the Macedon Ranges group’s promotional program last year. She said that after MRAT began in 2012, artists living outside the Macedon Ranges came forward wanting to be promoted, develop artistically and to meet creative peers and network with art supporters. “Our members still mostly reside or run businesses in the Ranges, but over the past few years we’ve welcomed some wonderfully talented artists from Sunbury,” Ms Hartnett

said. “This is our first event outside the shire and we’re hoping it opens up a new audience of followers and supporters.” About 50 artists have prepared hundreds of original works including paintings, photographs, pottery, jewellery, glass art and textiles. Gisborne painter and art educator Helen Cottle will demonstrate acrylic painting techniques throughout the exhibition, and Macedon’s Lara Le Reveur will showcase her expertise working with contemporary clay. The opening night of Eclectica will be held at The Boilerhouse Gallery, Jacksons Hill on Friday March 9, from 7.30-9.30pm. The artworks will continue to be on display on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 from 10am-5pm, and on Monday, March 12 from 10am-3pm. Entry is by gold coin donation. Serena Seyfort

Council topples tower proposal By Serena Seyfort

Paula steps out for a quality pal Paula Glare is gearing up to take on a 138-kilometre walk from Bendigo to Sunbury to raise money and awareness for children’s cancer charity Camp Quality. The Sunbury resident plans to complete the trip in 24 hours, beginning in Ascot, Bendigo, at 9am on Friday, March 23, and walking through the night to reach Sunbury Bunnings on Saturday, March 24. Ms Glare has been inspired to assist Camp Quality, a charity that cares for children with cancer and their families, by her “dear friend” Russell Wood, who was diagnosed with lung cancer almost three years ago. Ms Glare said she wanted to help Russell’s family through a difficult time, but Russell insisted she instead help children going through similar circumstances. “He thinks the most important thing in the world is kids,” she said. She said her motto for the walk is: “Russ would if he could, but he can’t, so I will.” Ms Glare hopes to generate awareness for what Camp Quality does for the community, and $10,000 in donations for its programs. “Please give what you can so we can put a smile on Russell’s face, as well as [on the faces of] all those kids and families that the wonderful people at Camp Quality help,” she said. Plans to build a 35-metre telecommunications tower in South Gisborne have been rejected by Macedon Ranges council, against the advice of council officers. The council heard 10 objections to the proposed facility from residents at a passionate council meeting on February 28. The proposed monopole and related equipment, which would have serviced the Optus network, were planned to be constructed at 479 Couangalt Road, Gisborne, set back 10.2 metres from the road. Objectors told the council more than 10 houses were located within half a kilometre of the proposed tower, with even more homes and business to be adversely affected by the visual “eyesore”. Two local tourism-related businesses said the tower would detract from the rural feel that appealed to South Gisborne visitors. All objectors told the council that they, and their various small businesses, did not experience any difficulty with service connectivity. Speaking on behalf of Optus and the project partners, Matt Evans said the proposal was responding to “a solid level of community demand” for improved coverage in the region. Council officers supported the application, saying it met the requirements and that these types of facilities always faced objection. But the council voted against the proposal, with councillors saying they wanted further proof of the tower’s benefits. Mr Evans told the council the issue of telecommunications towers in the area would not go away anytime soon. “There are going to be more towers in the Macedon Ranges,” he said.

Pesky birds in full flight By Esther Lauaki A Diggers Rest woman says she is faced with cutting down five gum trees on her property in a bid to rid her family of up to a thousand corellas that are ruling the roost. Tracey Vella has lived in the area for more than 40 years and said the corellas have only become a problem over the past decade. She is one of a number of residents urging Melton council to help find a solution for the nuisance birds that gather in Hitchcock-like proportions in trees, on the road, on rooftops and window ledges daily. “The corellas started coming to Diggers about 13 years ago when we had the massive drought and there was no water or feed for them in the bush,” Ms Vella told Star Weekly last week. “Before Bloomdale estate was here, we were surrounded by farmland and even the land at the army camp site was also farmed with crops … we had plenty of food and water around for them so they called Diggers Rest home.” In 2016, Melton council established a corella management working group to monitor the birds but residents say they have seen no progress. Fellow resident, Gabby Digiglio said the birds were “destroying the town”. “I went past my block of land to find hundreds of corellas blocking the road, covering the roofs of houses … they were everywhere,” Ms Digiglio said. Ms Vella said the birds gather for about five months of the year between November and

April and the noise, along with the mess, has now become “unbearable”. “On our property we have five gum trees about 43 metres tall,” Ms Vella said. “They’re in it every single day and night … at least 2000 a day and about 1000 in one tree. “For the first part of the day, they strip the tree and then they go away and come back at 9pm, at dusk, and they’re in the trees again. “We’ve got a mulcher now, but in previous years, I’ve had to call the council to ask for extra tip vouchers because there is enough debris being stripped from the trees to fill five large trailer loads. “These trees are so under stress that one day they will just have to be removed.” The issue has divided opinions on a Diggers Rest community Facebook page with animal lovers calling for residents to leave the birds alone. “I’m not asking for the corellas to be killed but I am asking for help to have them moved,” Ms Vella said. “I’ve had enough.”

Kinders get makeovers Both Romsey and Riddells Creek kindergartens are set to undergo renovations in term three of this year. The entrance to Romsey kinder will be reoriented to create dual access to both the kindergarten and Romsey Primary School, establishing a united education precinct in the town. The $330,000 project, which is being funded by the state government, will improve

opportunities for partnership and integration between children at the two facilities. Riddells Creek kinder will be refurbished and the building’s accessibility will also be improved. MY PLACE Alan ‘Ollie’ Matthews has been president of the Riddell District Football Netball League for 15 years, and was formerly mayor of the old Shire of Bulla. The grandfather speaks with Serena Seyfort about his love of the Macedon Ranges.

How have you been involved in the local community? I’ve mainly been involved through the Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL). I was also part of the league when I was in Craigieburn – I played 200-plus games with Craigieburn. I’ve been on the board of management of the RDFNL since 1995. I was president in 2002, and then became president again in 2004, continuing through to now. I also hold the record for the Riddell umpires – I’ve umpired 1428 games. I started back in 1986 and I’m still umpiring. During the winter I goal umpire on Saturdays and I field umpire for the kids and the women’s football on Sundays. I was president of the umpires from 1998-2002. I used to play cricket in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association, which covered the Macedon Ranges. I was also a foundation member of the Craigieburn State Emergency Service, which had a lot to do with the Macedon Ranges. I spent a lot of time in the Macedon area during the Ash Wednesday fires, for example, as the first controller with Craigieburn SES. I spent a lot of time in Macedon as well through the CFA. I was a lieutenant with Craigieburn CFA, which was in the same region – Region 14 – as Macedon. I was mayor of the Shire of Bulla, which is

now Hume council, from 1998-99. I was on that council for 10 years. What do you like about the Macedon Ranges? It’s a great community to work in football-wise. You make a lot of friends and you meet a lot of people. When you’re walking down the street it’s good to have someone say ‘G’day, how are you?’ I work a couple days a week at two hospitals as their safety manager, in Mitcham and Hawthorn, so it’s a bit of commuting. People say, ‘why do you travel so far?’ but when you get out and get the fresh air and the bush life and see kangaroos on the way home, you fully understand. Do you have a favourite local place? In my area, the two things I like are Cross Sawmill, the local hardware store. I tend to frequent there quite regularly. The other place is Monegeetta General Store. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Probably the main roads in our area. The road is paved most of the way, but it’s only single lane. Near our property it’s a dirt road, so a lot of dust comes up – but that’s only a small disadvantage when you’re living in the country. What’s something unusual about you? My first name is Alan, but most people know me as Ollie – it’s been my nickname since primary school. Even when I was mayor of Bulla, I was introduced to the Prime Minister as Ollie Matthews.

By Tara Murray Ashfield and East Sunbury batsmen need to be among the runs this week as both teams try to seal Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade finals spots. Only a disaster will prevent Ashfield from playing finals and a win would put it beyond doubt. It’s a long way from last season, when it finished bottom and only avoided relegation as the competition was expanded to 10 teams. Ashfield’s game with Gisborne is evenly poised after the first day. The Dragons were bowled out for 194 and Jas King took three wickets for Ashfield. East Sunbury needs everything to go its way against St Anthonys if it is to move into the top four. The first step is beating the ladder leaders, who have put on another good score with the bat. The Saints are looking for a win to try and seal top spot and made 272 with a number of contributions. New Gisborne’s netball coach to build from within New Gisborne A-grade netball coach Kim Bailey is looking forward to her return to coaching at a local level. Bailey, who has long been involved with local netball, was recently appointed the Bulldogs A-grade coach to lead them into this year’s Bendigo Netball League season. It’s been three years since Bailey coached at a senior football-netball level. Her role as AFL Goldfields netball manager prevented her from doing so. However, after resigning from AFL Goldfields and taking a role with Netball Victoria, it has allowed her to step back into coaching locally at a senior level.

Bailey has been coaching the ACU Sovereigns division 1 side in the Victorian Netball League and the Sunbury Lions under-17 team in the RDNL. She said she was looking forward to the challenge. “It’s nice to go into the league and start afresh,” she said. “Gisborne promotes within and look to have a lot of local talent. They have a very professional, structured program. “I’m looking forward to going to a game and just coaching.” Bailey said while she hadn’t coached or been involved in the Bendigo league, she had an idea of what to expect.

“Guy [Keane] coached the side last year and we’re coaching together at Sovereigns so there is still some connection,” she said. “There’s lots of VNL players and Goldfields have played some interleague against them. “I will have to get used to some of the other players.” Bailey will coach just the A-grade side. Leesa Lord has been appointed A-reserve coach, Nathan Thompson will coach the B-grade team, Sharon Parfrey will coach the B-reserve side with Rylee Connell assisting her and Maddy Stewart will again coach the under-17s. Bailey said it would be a similar line-up to last year, with the team having been selected

before she was appointed. “There’s some good young kids and I think it’ll be a young side with some leaders like Maddy Stewart,” she said. “The squad is finalised and pretty much like last year’s squad, there could be a little bit of movement. “There’s some talented kids coming through.” Bailey said she was keen to help the side take that next step and go through to a grand final. Since winning the A-grade premiership in 2013, the Bulldogs have been thereabouts, being knocked out in the preliminary final three times and semi-final once. Tara Murray

Dragons in finals battle By Tara Murray The equation is simple this week for Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup – win and play finals. Lose and the Dragons finals hopes will come down to whether Romsey gets the job done against Bacchus Marsh, or loses by a margin greater than Gisborne. The Dragons started the final round 0.04 points behind fourth-placed Romsey, with both sides facing teams inside the top four. After day one against third-placed Woodend, Dragons coach Glenn Waites said the match was evenly poised. A win would mean the Dragons go above Woodend. “We have to win, or hope that we lose better than Romsey,” Waites said. “The Woodend ground is quite quick and I would say the 239 is about par, but we’ve got the runs on the board.

“It’s a good score, but not a great score. “We know we need to bowl well to get the win.” The Dragons made 239, bowled out in the final over of the day. Callum Jackson, in just his third McIntyre Cup match for the season, top scored with 54. Greg Matthews took four wickets for Woodend. Skipper Jarryd Vernon and opening bowler Darcy Nolan are both missing this game. “We’ve got a few younger guys who are starting to really find that line and length and helping spread the load,” Waites said. “Matt McDonald has taken huge leaps forward and took a five wicket haul, while Joel Garbutt is ready to take the next step with both his batting and bowling. “Braden Spear has been far more consistent with the ball and looking threatening. “We’ve also got Jakson Knight back after he

missed last week. If we bowl well we should come out on top, so I’m looking forward to seeing how we go.” Waites said if they can make the finals, anything can happen. The Dragons finished third last season and went on to claim a second straight premiership. The Dragons would be happy after looking at the scores of the Bacchus Marsh and Romsey match after day one. The Bulls, having already claimed the minor premiership, are well in control. They made 324, before having Romsey in trouble at 2-4 at stumps. Sunbury is 2-110 in reply to Lancefield’s 140, with Heath Boffey 77 not out. Riddell is in control against Sunbury United. The Bombers, needing a win to finish second, are 3-73 in reply to United’s 143. In the other match, Diggers Rest Bulla is 3-47 chasing Rupertswood’s 156.

Sunbury Lions’ pre-season focus hasn’t just been about what’s happening on the field, but also building relationships in the community. The Lions, who play in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition, have been looking to try different things during the off season. Lions’ media liaison officer Emel Ramadan said the team was attracting players from across Hume. On Sunday, they changed training up, with the players spending the morning at Gladstone Park Tennis Club, in what Ramadan is hoping will be the start of a relationship between the two clubs. “We’ve done a lot of training,” she said. “We decided to hold a little camp and offer support to their club and give us an alternative for training. “We used the footballs and encompassed some tennis skills. The club is giving us support and as we get players from all across Hume, it’s a good thing for both clubs.” Ramadan said they were after players of all abilities to join the club this year, with no experience necessary. Kerry Saunders will again coach the side, her fourth year in charge. The Lions pres-eason training is held on Wednesday nights. “We’ve retained a lot of the girls, however some of the girls have moved onto VFL teams. While we would like to have them still play for us, we know we’ve helped in their development. “We don’t know whether they will be able to play with us as well. “We’re always after new players. The Lions will play in the EDFL competition, after last season playing in a combined EDFL and Western Region Football League competition, where the Lions finished third. Ramadan said it will make things a bit easier knowing some of the opposition. “It will be easier as we know the competition and where we are playing,” she said. “Keilor won the premiership and they were a really strong team. It’ll be interesting to see what it looks like this year. “You never know what the teams will look like. Athletes go for gold By Tara Murray Sunbury athletes will be out in force at the Little Athletic Victoria state track and field championships this weekend. Sunbury Little Athletics Centre has had 14 athletes qualify for the event following their results at the Northern Metropolitan region titles last month. Five Sunbury athletes won gold at the regions to automatically qualify for the state championships.

Overall, Sunbury won six gold, 10 silver and seven bronze at the regions, with 26 athletes competing. Elias Kahsay claimed gold in the under-14 boys 800 metre and 1500 metre events. Kahsay won the state title in the under-13 boys 800 metres last year. Jameson Haxby won the under-11 boys triple jump event. He finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 200 metres to also qualify for the state championships in those events. Natalie Arbanas won the under-9 girls 60

metre hurdles and will compete in that event and long jump at the state championships. Abbey McDonald will compete in the under-14 girls javelin, 400 metres and shot put, after winning a gold and two silvers at the region titles. Liam Joyce claimed gold in the under-9 boys 70 metres and will compete in that and the 100 metres and 200 metres at the state championships. Nine other athletes qualified for the state championships based on their times and distances at the region titles.

Golfâ€™s win sets up grand final Kyneton Golf is the first team through to the Central Highlands Bowlsâ€™ top divisionâ€™s grand final after an upset win against Gisborne. Gisborne entered the match the in-form team after a number of good wins late in the season, but it meant little on Saturday. Not much separated the teams all day, with each team winning two rinks, but it was Golf that got the victory, winning 86 (14)-80 (4). Stephen Taylor and Ricky Turner led the winning rinks for Golf, while Matthew Bacon and Sam Boslem won the rinks for Gisborne. Golf now gets the week off and will face either Gisborne or Bacchus Marsh Gold in the grand final. Gold won through to the preliminary final with a thrilling two shot win against Kyneton. Facing each other for a second straight week, Gold was able to turn the tables after a final round loss. Five shots was the biggest gap between the rinks in the semi-final, with Gold winning 98 (16)-96 (2). Glenn Arthur, Justin Webster and Phil Minniti led the winning rinks for Bacchus Marsh. In division 2, Gisborne Red won through to the grand final with a big win against Diggers Rest. Kyneton won by two shots against Macedon and will now face Diggers Rest in the preliminary final. In division 3, Romsey will face Trentham or Macedon in the grand final. Tara Murray
