A $5.4 million upgrade to reduce the risk and severity of crashes on notorious Sunbury Road will start this month. Flexible safety barriers will be installed and the road will be widened between Tullamarine Freeway and Oaklands Road as part of the state government’s Towards Zero strategy. The upgrade comes after 13 crashes were recorded on the stretch of road in the five years to July, 2016, leaving one person dead and seven seriously injured, according to VicRoads. Hume councillor Jack Medcraft, who has been lobbying for safety improvements at the road for five years, said he was “very happy” barriers would now block drivers from doing U-turns. Cr Medcraft said he began calling for changes to the road when he was involved in a near-miss passing the airport. “We were heading to a council meeting and we almost got wiped out by a car doing a U-turn at 100 kilometres per hour,” he said. The Jacksons Creek ward councillor said drivers continued to do U-turns even after he successfully pushed for the speed limit to be lowered to 80km/h. Sunbury Road is a major access route between Sunbury and Melbourne Airport, with VicRoads data showing about 21,000 vehicles use the road each day Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who announced the project last week, said it would help ensure those on the road got home safely. “We’re getting on with these important safety works to prevent crashes on this busy stretch of Sunbury Road,” Mr Bull said. “Everybody makes mistakes, but they shouldn’t have to pay for these with their life.” Hume mayor Geoff Porter thanked the state government for the $5.4 million investment, but said the road would be made safer by duplication. “Any step towards decreasing road trauma is fantastic news,” Cr Porter said. “Council believes that, ultimately, duplication of Sunbury Road is the best solution to addressing road safety, as well as congestion, on Sunbury Road.” Work scheduled to begin late this month will involve placing safety barriers along the centre and side of the road to reduce head-on and run-off-road crashes. New lighting will be installed and the road will be widened to accommodate the barriers. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the middle of the year.
A recent announcement has had local children and parents smiling. Macedon Ranges preschool children will receive free fluoride varnish to prevent tooth decay as part of a new state government program. Macedon Ranges towns are non-fluoridated – meaning the protective chemical fluoride is not present in the water supply. The varnish has proven to be highly effective in stopping tooth decay among at-risk children and preventing oral disease in the future. Health minister Jill Hennessy said the program would encourage healthier mouths and good oral health. “Providing fluoride varnish to our Macedon kids will improve their oral health in the long term by preventing tooth decay early,” she said. The $100,000 state government program will deliver fluoride varnish applications and oral health promotion with tooth packs to preschool children at their local early childhood services. ELLIOTT, 4

Council challenge to Hill plan By Serena Seyfort Hume council has slammed the Victorian Planning Authority’s draft master plan for Jacksons Hill, saying its vision and principles cannot be achieved because of its “lack of detail and certainty”. The plan’s suggested “infill development” for the site’s heritage core and a proposed state school on the site have been identified as “of most concern” in the council’s feedback to the authority. The detailed submission, which was endorsed
by the council at its meeting on February 12, requests an extensive number of changes to the plan. Cr Ann Potter told the meeting the feedback did not “beat around the bush” and said the council was acting on the community’s wishes. “We do disagree with a lot of the things … and we haven’t been afraid to say so,” she said. Both Cr Potter and Cr Leigh Johnson said they were concerned the authority’s timing for community consultation – during the holiday season – had not given people the opportunity to truly share their thoughts. submission identifies the proposed school as “conflicting with the key themes from the community engagement sessions”. In the submission, the council calls for much more detail and clarification in the plan and a “review” of a number of elements, including the proposed infill development. The council
has, however, indicated strong support for the draft plan’s vision and principles, identified land uses, improved connections and access, the expansion of the specialist school and the inclusion of the community, art and cultural precinct. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said Hume council was playing a key role in Jacksons Hill’s future. “The government will continue to work closely with the community and all stakeholders as we move forward from the draft plan to a final design,” he said. Autumn’s flowers spring to life Kyneton Horticultural Society’s annual Autumn Flower Show will take place on the first weekend of March to celebrate the start of the season. Dahlias, roses, cut flowers, shrubs, pot plants, cacti and floral art will be on display in the Watts Pavilion at Kyneton Showgrounds. Society president Nicholas Scott said the society was particularly excited to exhibit a new collection of rare pot plants, which had recently
been donated. Mr Scott has encouraged locals of all ages to enter flowers and vegetables in the event to show what they can grow. This year’s show will include a children’s section and a special division to recognise 70 years of the hybrid ‘Peace’ rose. Mr Scott said he was hoping to see lots of dahlias – a flower species that is at its peak in autumn.

Police continue to search for vandals who struck in Kyneton Botanic Gardens earlier this month. A shed at the public gardens was broken into and the recycled water irrigation system was damaged some time between Thursday, February 1, and Monday, February 5. The lock on the shed door was destroyed and the electronic monitor and hard drive that ran the irrigation system was stolen, according to Kyneton police. Macedon Ranges assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the attack had left the watering system inoperable. “It is disappointing to see this kind of damage inflicted on a local community asset,” Mr Thornton said. “The park relies on irrigation to water the large number of trees and shrubs in the garden, and to have it attacked without regards for the consequences is frustrating.” Lyn Currie, from Friends of Kyneton Botanic Gardens, said the vandalism was disheartening. “To steal from the gardens is like stealing from the local community,” she said. “The gardens is a sanctuary for visitors and locals alike, so it’s difficult to understand why someone would want to harm it in any way.” Kyneton Botanic Gardens have been a beloved community space since it was established in 1858. The watering system is used to tend the garden’s large number of heritage-listed trees. Anyone with information about the incident can contact Kyneton police on 5421 2900.

Guy pledge on Sunbury crossing By Serena Seyfort Sunbury’s Gap Road level crossing will be removed if the state opposition is elected in November. Speaking to Star Weekly in Sunbury on Friday, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy also confirmed that establishing Sunbury as a stand-alone municipality was the party’s top priority for the area. Mr Guy revealed the state opposition plans to eliminate the Gap Road level crossing, as well as removing the intersection of Gap Road
and Horne Street, through grade-separation, with one road running over the other. He said plans to remove the notorious intersection would go ahead even though the Andrews government intends to replace the current roundabout with traffic lights this year. “We need to eliminate that level crossing and eliminate the road intersection as well,” Mr Guy said. He said traffic lights would be a short-term fix, while grade separation would be a long-term solution that would provide greater safety and allow uninterrupted traffic flow.
Mr Guy also said the Liberals were set on establishing a City of Sunbury, suggesting starting dates as early as July, 2019. “Sunbury has enough potential to be a stand-alone city,” Mr Guy said. “An excision from Hume should be straightforward.” He said he didn’t think another plebiscite on whether Sunbury should split from Hume council was required, as the Liberal government carried one out in 2013. That poll showed residents favoured a split, but the Andrews government abandoned the idea in October, 2015, after independent
auditors advised against it, claiming it would come at a significant financial cost to residents. Mr Guy said the move would be financially viable, comparing Sunbury to Nillumbik, which became a municipality in 1994. “Sunbury is larger than Nillumbik – it’s more sustainable,” he said. “If it can work in Nillumbik it can work in Sunbury.” Mr Guy said he had not recently been in contact with Hume council about the issue. Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull said he would continue pushing for the current government to remove the Gap Road level crossing.
Scouting for more members A new Joeys division has been established at the 1st Riddells Creek Scout Group this year. The Riddells Creek group now caters for children aged from 5-14 years. Earlier this month about 14 youngsters joined the existing Cubs and Scouts sections at a welcome event, bringing the total membership to just over 40. The group is open to both boys and girls as part of the Scouts Australia program and enables local children to engage in peer to peer mentoring and healthy, outdoor adventures and activities. Children at Kyneton’s Lady Brooks Kindergarten are able to enjoy a hands-on experience as they learn about the natural environment around them. An outdoor classroom and sensory garden was introduced at the kinder last year with the help of a Powerful Youth Projects grant. A rain gauge, thermometer, wind spinners and an optical prism were set up in the outdoor space, alongside an observation table containing giant magnifying glasses. About 130 pupils got stuck into setting up the space, which included a working bee to plant indigenous grasses and plants to provide a habitat for animals and insects. Lady Brooks parents committee president Josephine Naughton said the kinder was
delighted with the results. “Kinder yards can be very noisy and busy, but through design, we have created a separate outdoor classroom that encourages a child to slow down and take in the information around them,” she said. Grants are available through the Powerful Youth Projects program again this year. Schools, childcare centres and youth groups can apply for one of 200 grants of up to $1000 for sustainability and environmental projects such as vegie gardens, frog ponds and recycling programs. V/Line services on the Bendigo line experienced a nine per cent drop in punctuality in January, with 75.4 per cent of services arriving on time, compared to 84.4 per cent in December. V/Line has said high temperatures contributed to the lower performance, with trains having to slow down to 90km/h when temperatures exceed 36 degrees.

Macedon honours local women By Serena Seyfort
Ms Fowler said the evening would feature “amazing women who are all very different” and was going to recognise the United Nation’s 2018 theme No Women Left Behind. Macedon resident and dean of Deakin University Law School Jenni Lightowlers will be speaking, as will accomplished local sculptor Jennifer Mann. Clothes handmade in sewing centres in India and the Philippines will be available for sale on the night to raise money for The Liora Project, which is dedicated to releasing women from sexual slavery.
A registered International Women’s Day event is popping up in the Macedon Ranges this year. Macedon resident Ali Fowler is one of four women determined to get a regular event that honours and profiles fabulous local women, while raising funds for women’s projects, on the region’s calendar. Their first event – Macedon Ranges International Women’s Day Dinner – will be held on March 7 from 6.45pm at Olive Jones of Macedon.
Ms Fowler said anyone was welcome to attend the event, including men. She said there had already been a lot of local interest, and tickets were booking quickly. Tickets include the program, dinner and a glass of wine donated by Mount Towrong Vineyard. There will be something for fans of all types of music at the 2018 Macedon Ranges Music Festival. This year’s line-up features everything from folk and jazz, to blues and pop/rock, performed by national and local talent. Mick Thomas of Weddings, Parties, Anything will headline the festival. Adelaide’s six-piece indie folk group The Winter Gypsy is making the trip interstate for the event. Grim Fawkner, Wesley Fuller and the Naturally Cool Big Band are local representatives eager to take to the stage. Artists, festival staff and organisers are all volunteering their efforts so that 100 per cent of ticket sales can be donated to the Cambodian Kids Foundation. Last year’s festival raised close to $20,000 for the Woodend-based organisation. The 2018 event will take place at Gisborne Steam Park on Saturday, March 3.

MY PLACE Romsey’s Peter Mitchell received a Macedon Ranges council Community Achievement Award on Australia Day. He speaks with Serena Seyfort about giving back to his beloved home. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I’ve lived here in Romsey for 84 years – I was born here. I’ve worked as a farmer and my wife and I raised our son and daughter in Romsey. They are very successful and have given us two grandchildren.
several people. It was a great venture with a lot of people, it was a real team effort. I’m very involved in sports. I played tennis and lawn bowls, representing the association that I was playing in. I helped raise money for new tennis courts and a new sports complex. I was also on the Romsey Golf Club committee.
Tell us about your involvement with the community. I’ve been very involved in Romsey. It was a great village to grow up in, and I just wanted to be involved to put something back into the town. I joined the former Romsey Shire Council as a councillor in 1973, where I stayed for three terms – nine and a half years. I was on the board of Romsey Water Trust for 17 years, and I was chairman for the last eight of them. During that time (1970s and 1980s), we sewered the whole town and I was chairman of the Romsey Sewerage Authority. I was a member of the Lancefield Cemetery Trust, and I was chairman when the major upgrade was done. I worked with the secretary and instigated the works. I was on the Scouts committee and the Romsey Primary School committee, and the committees for the school’s and Romsey Uniting Church’s 150 year celebrations. I was on the Romsey and Lancefield Rotary Club for a few years, until my health started to go. I was involved in the writing of the book When memory turns the key – the history of the Shire of Romsey. Then I wrote Romsey: a veritable Garden of Eden. I was helped by
You must have seen a lot of change in 84 years – how do you feel about it? I’m happy with the development. We’re getting a lot of great people coming into the area – and they’ve taken over from the jobs I was doing. They’re doing terrific work, like the Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association (RRBATA). That’s a group that’s formed to improve the town of Romsey, and they’re doing a wonderful job. Would you change anything about the town? No, we’ve got to live with the times. Being close to Melbourne, it was always going to grow. It’s changed from a farming town now, which probably is disappointing, but there’s a lot of farming country in Australia. It’s developing and I’m quite happy with the way things are going. While we can, my wife and I don’t ever want to leave.

What do you like most about Romsey? I suppose we’re divorced from most of the terrible problems in Melbourne. And it’s a community, I’ve got a lot of friends, and I just really enjoy living here. We’ve got great neighbours and just know so many great people.

She substitutes the regular fries with crumbed eggplant chips. They are superb. And hot. I’ve already seen enough – and eaten enough – to rather wish the “poke bowl� fad fades away with some haste, seeing as it widely seems to be an excuse for slopping mediocre ingredients in a bowl and charging richly for it. The Mantra Bowl ($18), by contrast, shows how it should be done and how good such an offering can be. The ingredients are top-shelf and – just as importantly for this kind of meal – beautifully arranged in the bowl. Rice ’n’ black beans, crunchy pickled cabbage, several kinds of mushroom, bean sprouts, tender asparagus – and even a trans-national touch through brown baba ganoush and flatbread: All wonderful, alone and/or together. Bennie muchly enjoys his barbecue duck waffle with mango chutney, lychee gel and grilled asparagus ($23). The meat is juicy yet nicely chewy, though it seems to me his meal would benefit from a greater sauce/liquid component. He disagrees.

The location and setting of Mantra is a surprise and just right: In a light industrial conclave way over in the Yarraville back waters near Francis and Hyde streets. Inside, the warehouse has undergone a gorgeous cafe transformation. There’s lots of space, high ceilings and plenty of room to grow. Which makes me think that Mantra will continue evolving. In the meantime, there is food – very lovely food. The menu runs to breakfast items such as sweet corn fritters, breakfast ramen and jasmine rice pudding. Lunch choices range from a falafel burger to what sounds like a delectable salad of heirloom carrots, beetroot hummus, dukkah and sweet potato. CTS visits twice within a couple of days and has a swell time lunching. The service is cheerful and efficient and the wait times good. Visiting for reconnaissance purposes, I go with the wagyu burger with chilli relish, cos lettuce, tomato, bacon and fries ($24). Now, $24 is quite a lot to pay for a cafe burger in these parts. On the other hand, this is a terrific specimen of the burger art. Simplicity is a virtue here. It’s a two-fisted joy, juicy and with Middle Eastern seasoning. The chips are good, though those on the outer reaches of the mound are barely lukewarm and the rest could be hotter, too. SPORT In-form Sunbury puts its foot down as finals loom Sunbury continued its solid form to get past Darebin City in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1. With a finals spot already secure, Sunbury has been focusing on getting the right mix and continues to get wins on the board. Facing bottom side Darebin City at its home green, Sunbury never looked in trouble, winning 90 (14)-67 (4). Todd Trewarne’s rink was again the standout, claiming a 33-9 win. Trewarne has been one of the stars for the side since joining Sunbury early in the season. Mark Cowan, who was one of the standouts on the day, led his rink to a 28-13 win. Marc Bullows’ rink continued to struggle, losing its fifth straight match, while Carla Krizanic’s rink lost by one shot. Scores were level heading into the final end. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said they would
take a 23 shot win away from home any week. Sunbury is 19 points behind second-placed Glenroy and holds a 37-point gap against fourth-placed Werribee, which they play this week. It was a good day for Sunbury, with four of its six sides winning. Glennon said Sunbury’s second side, which plays in division 3, is now back in the relegation battle after an 18-0 loss to Altona. Meanwhile in Central Highlands Bowls top grade, the battle for a top two finish will go down to the final round. Gisborne remains on top of the ladder, after defeating Lancefield, 104 (14)-72 (4) on Saturday. Gisborne sits three points clear of Kyneton Golf, which took out the Kyneton derby. Golf won 111 (16)-93 (2). The loss ended Kyneton’s top two hopes, with the fourth-placed side 20 points behind Golf.

Top order fails to spark By Tara Murray Macedon’s batting woes continue as the side looks headed for defeat against St Anthonys in the Gisborne District Cricket Association B-grade competition. Facing the top side, Macedon’s batsmen failed to stand up to the challenge with just three batsmen hitting double figures in the team’s 168-run total. Opener Pat Trotta made 58, while Chris Axton (47) and Craig Pender (32 not out) could also hold their heads high. Macedon’s Nick Dodd said the top order, with the exception of Trotta, failed to perform which set up a tough day. Dodd said they needed at least 200 on the board at Arnolds Creek to set a competitive score against one of the in-form teams of the competition. “The score wasn’t enough, but to get to even 168 was a good effort,” he said. “Credit to St Anthonys and Cam Clayton, they were bowling in the right areas early on. “Pat and Chris batted really well and got us to a somewhat competitive score, while Craig came in towards the end and did the best he could. “The senior guys at the top of the order, including myself, didn’t put any pressure on at the start of the innings.” St Anthonys faced 12 overs at the end of the day and made the most of them, making 1-73, going at a run a ball. A loss on Saturday and a Kyneton win could mean Macedon falls to second bottom heading into the last round against finals hopeful Eynesbury. Dodd said it had been a disappointing season, with the club’s T20 title the highlight. He said one other positive was that some bowlers took advantage of their time in the top side to seal a spot. “It’s the toughest season I’ve played in at my time at Macedon,” he said. “We’ve been short on players and availability has hurt us. We haven’t had the players to put pressure on other guys for spots. “The T20 win had one of our strongest teams … when players are available we can show we are more than competitive against anyone. “We’re not out of the woods for relegation.” In other games, there was some big scores put on the board. Kyneton made 377 against Riddell on the back of a century from Andrew Ferres, while Wallan made 361 against finals hopeful East Sunbury. Scott O’Donnell made 150. Ashfield made 187 against Bacchus Marsh, while Gisborne is 8-102 chasing Eynesbury’s 163.
Gisborne off to a good start Gisborne’s good pre-season form transitioned into its FFA Cup qualifying round match with Keon Park as it scored a strong first win. After three practice match wins, the FFV state league 5 west side was on fire in the second half against Keon Park, scoring five second-half goals to win 7-1. Jake McIntyre scored a hat-trick for Gisborne, Tyson Lopez scored twice and Aaron Cosgriff and Daniel Jones also found the back of the net. Speaking before the match, Gisborne coach Danny Ciantar said they were confident heading into the game and hoped to progress further in the tournament. Saturday’s win was the first time Gisborne has won an FFA Cup qualifying match. “We’ve been going really well,” Ciantar said. “We’ve been working really hard on the track for seven weeks. “We played three practice matches, beating division 3 side Essendon United 2-1 and then beating Thornbury 4-2 and Mitchell Rangers 6-0. “We’ve got a good squad with about 17 new boys and they’re gelling together really well and looking at having a competitive season.” Ciantar, who is in his first season of coaching the side, said he was impressed by the number of players who had decided to return to the club. He said many had played juniors at the club before stepping up but wanted to return to help their home club. “The atmosphere is really exciting,” he said. “I’ve had fantastic support from the club and they’ve given me whatever I’ve needed.” Ciantar said promotion was the goal for the state league 5 west season and anything less would be disappointing. “The boys have bought into my messages and methods and been really good,” he said. Bomber bats fall short By Tara Murray Riddell’s patchy form with the bat continues as it stares down the barrel of a second straight loss in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. After winning their first eight games, the Bombers have faltered. They lost to third-placed Woodend and are on the back foot after day one of the top-of-the-table clash against Bacchus Marsh. Bombers skipper Mick Allen said they weren’t performing with the bat as they had earlier in the season. “We didn’t apply ourselves with the bat and you can’t do that against good sides,” Allen said. “We’ve tried a few different things that have worked until the last couple of rounds. “Our bowling is our strength and our batting is something we are working on.” On Saturday against the Bulls, the Bombers were bowled out for just 130. Daniel Fisk top-scored with 29 in an innings littered with starts but no good scores. Allen said the total was never going to be enough. “It wasn’t a good day,” he said. “Against a side like Bacchus Marsh you have to post at least 200 to be a chance.” Madushanka Ekanayaka’s stunning form with the ball continued as he ran through the Bombers’ line-up, taking 7-40 from 21 overs. He took bags of 10 and 11 in his previous two two-day matches. Allen, who would have been a handy inclusion in the Bombers’ batting line-up, had to watch from the sidelines due to injury. “It’s a bit of an ongoing back problem I’ve had for about 18 months,” he said. “A few extra games last month took its toll. You don’t like missing matches like this, but it’s about getting it right for finals.” One positive for the Bombers was the debut of Kyle Whitehurst. Whitehurst, who turned 18 on Saturday, joined the club after moving across from Western Australia. “He’s been over here since before Christmas,” Allen said. “He was a sub fielder for the seconds last week and we threw him into the ones this week. Settled Jets ready to fly New coach Ryan Addison is hopeful a strong pre-season will hold the Sunbury Jets in good stead come the Big V men’s division 1 season. Addison, who was an assistant coach last season, said despite a very different line-up the side was looking strong. With less than a quarter of last year’s team returning Jacob Formosa, who led the Jets scoring last season averaging nearly 20 points a game, will again be a key for the side. Addison said Formosa, who is in his second season with the Jets, had been training really well. “He’s a big presence for us and we are expecting big things from him,” Addison said. “He’s only fairly young and already shown some big things.” Daniel Jackson and Damian O’Keefe have also returned. Jed O’Riley, who comes from Hume City Broncos, is expected to get some big minutes. O’Riley, who played in both the Broncos youth league and state championship side, averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in his youth league games and was named in the division’s All-Star 5 team. Canadian import Jonathan Alexander will play as a stretch four and is set to help the side in transition. Alexander has been part of the American College system, while most recently playing for the University of Manitoba. Some former Jets players have returned, while a couple of Kiwis are set to make the journey across the Tasman. The Jets won’t have a chance to ease into the season, playing against Chelsea Seagulls, which lost last year’s division 1 grand final series, first up. Addison said it would give them a bit of a look at what to expect this season. He said it could take a bit of time to settle in with a new side. “Chelsea made the grand final and they nearly won it and we face some other good teams first-up,” he said. “We’ll see how we go the first couple of weeks being a new team. “The team has come together really well and we’ve been going strong since early January. “It’s good to have an almost full roster.” The Jets will play two practice matches and then the Dandenong pre-season tournament, before kicking off their Big V season on March 17. Gisborne girls’ growth sets a new pathway for players Gisborne is set to have four female football sides this season, with the introduction of a junior girls team. Having introduced a women’s side last season, to go along with its youth girls teams, the club has decided to take the next step in the pathway. Through its two clubs, Gisborne and Gisborne Rookies, they will now have junior girls, two youth girls sides and a women’s side taking to the field. Bulldogs’ Darren Mitchell said it looked like there would be good numbers for all four sides. “There’s been a lot of interest through primary school kids and we had a couple come and try days and had 35 kids come down,” he said.
“We’re really confident in getting a team up and going. Even though we lost three or four girls who are too old for youth girls, we had plenty of numbers.” Mitchell said they had more than 20 players already for the women’s side and hoped that there would be a few more interested players. He said it didn’t matter if players had experience or were looking to play for the first time. Mitchell said the number one focus for the club in the early days was to make sure it was an inclusive side and developed players’ skills. The women’s side made finals in its first season, while one of the Bulldogs youth league girls team took out the Riddell Youth Girls premiership with an undefeated season.

All the Bulldogs sides will again play in AFL Goldfields competitions. Mitchell said the club considered moving to a new Bendigo-based competition, but decided
to stick with its existing competition. He said the aim was to continue building on last season. “We outperformed our expectations last season,” he said. “We’re looking to go better this year.” All three coaches from last season have been reappointed, and the club is still looking for a junior coach.
