Macedon Ranges urgently requires more sports courts to cater for increased participation and population growth, a new study reveals. The council’s recently released Regional Sports Hub Feasibility Study has revealed a current shortage of two sports courts and predicts this deficit will rise to 16 by 2036, if no new courts are added to the existing eight available courts. The study suggests building a new 4-6 court indoor sports hub on the corner of Barringo and Hamilton roads in New Gisborne in the short term, as well as court expansions at current facilities in Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Romsey and Riddells Creek across the next 20 years. The proposed indoor sports hub would be located on the same site as the netball complex and cater for netball, basketball, futsal, volleyball and badminton training and competitions and recreation classes such as dance and community events. It would be dependent on funding from the council, state and federal governments, and cost at least $15.5 million in the first stage and another $10.2 million in a second stage. Macedon Ranges council is calling for public feedback on the suggested hub’s location, design and staged works. The Regional Sports Hub Feasibility Study was funded by the federal government and conducted by Otium Planning Group in consultation with a reference group made up of members of local sports clubs in late 2017. In December, spokesperson for the reference group Megan Condron told Star Weekly the group was “really happy” with the consultants’ recommendations. Mayor Jennifer Anderson has encouraged everyone to have their say on the outcome of the study. “This study is about developing a shared vision with the community and ensuring that everyone benefits from what is proposed,” Cr Anderson said. A pancake stall will pop up inside Gisborne Village shopping centre on Saturday to raise money to help people living in crisis. Volunteers from Gisborne Uniting Church will be flipping pancakes and selling them for gold-coin donations from 9.30am to 12.30pm. UnitingCare co-ordinator Maree Clarke said it would be the team’s 15th year running the fundraiser. “It’s a great way for us to get together, have something good to eat and help others at the same time,” she said. All money from the pancakes sales will go towards Uniting Vic.Tas, a community service organisation that supports people at risk of, and already experiencing, financial crisis, homelessness, mental illness and problems with alcohol and drugs in Victoria and Tasmania. Since the Gisborne community begun its Pancake Day Appeal in 2003, more than $5000 has been raised to help fund local projects. The Pancake Day Appeal is inspired by Shrove Tuesday in the Christian calendar, which falls on Tuesday, February, 13 this year. For more inforomation, contact Maree on 5428 3852. Young citizen honoured

Charges follow lockdown

A man and a woman have been arrested and charged after an alleged firearms incident which resulted in Lancefield’s main street being locked down last week. Police were called to a High Street property about 9am last Tuesday following reports that a man was inside with a firearm. Local police and the Critical Incident Response Team circled the house, closing High Street between McMasters Lane and Park Street. Nearby, Lancefield Primary School went into lockdown as helicopters circled overhead. The incident is believed to have followed a dispute between housemates. Detective Sergeant Stephen Cole said three people, including the accused, fled the property before police arrived. A 37-year-old female resident of the house was arrested in Lancefield late Tuesday, January 30. She was bailed to appear before Castlemaine Magistrates court on March 19 on charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury and assault with a weapon. A 28-year-old male resident was arrested in Kyneton early on Wednesday morning. He has been charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, causing criminal damage, firearm offences and breaches of bail and was remanded to appear in Bendigo Magistrates court on March 9.

Sunbury student Michelle Grover has been honoured as Hume’s 2018 Young Citizen of the Year for her various leadership roles in the community. Michelle was a recipient of the award at a Hume council ceremony, held in Craigieburn on Australia Day. Mayor Geoff Porter thanked the teenager for her community involvement and applauded “her great energy, hard work and dedication”. “Fifteen-year-old Michelle has had a busy and active life for someone of such a young age,” Cr Porter said. “She is extremely talented in many areas and a true role model for young people in Hume.” Michelle has been a junior leader at Sunbury Wongurri Guides for four years, helping younger girls through the program. The year 10 student told Star Weekly she was looking forward to being able to train to be an official Guide leader when she turns 18. Michelle has also represented the guide group at events such as Anzac Day marches. The Salesian College student has had leadership roles at school, including helping to run the school’s toy drive for children in need in 2015. She said she was looking forward to undertaking more fundraising and charity projects. At the ceremony on Friday, January 25, more than 70 of Hume’s residents were also sworn in as Australian citizens.

Macedon Ranges council has reassured residents that recycled material will not go to landfill after recycling giant Visy announced it would stop accepting recycling from the bin collector who services the region as of February 9. Sunbury MP Josh Bull has announced that the state government will put $100,000 towards building the new BMX, skate and scooter pavilion in Sunbury. The funding comes from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and will be used in conjunction with Hume council money. Construction of the pavilion is planned for the 2018-19 financial year.

Running fun in Kyneton Kyneton Football Netball Club’s community fun run is back for a third year, this time to help raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The Kyneton Community Track and River Fun Run will take place along Kyneton Racecourse and the Campaspe River Walk on Sunday, February 18. Participants can opt to walk or run either five or 10 kilometres. Schools’ classy revamp By Serena Seyfort Several Sunbury and Macedon Ranges schools are undergoing changes in the 2018 school year. Kyneton Primary School pupils and staff are eagerly preparing to relocate to a new home in mid-March. Construction on the school’s new $11.5 million campus alongside Kyneton Secondary College is due to be finished later this month. The switch will mean students studying in

Kyneton will be able to start and finish their entire school education at the one precinct. Construction is also nearing completion at Braemar College’s Woodend campus. Principal Russell Deer said students in years 5 to 8 would begin studying at the site from the start of term two. Meanwhile, another option for secondary schooling has become available in Sunbury this year. Red Rock Christian College welcomed its

first ever cohort of year 7 and 8 students when school commenced last week. Prior to this year, the school taught only primary school pupils. But principal Karen McCoy said the school now had the capacity to further its teaching and guidance into the early secondary years. Three new classrooms, an art room and science room are being built to facilitate more students in the future. The new facilities are expected to be ready for use by term two.

Green thumb Lina Schiafone runs a free garden club for children in Sunbury on the last Saturday of every month. The grandmother believes that teaching kids to grow and use their own produce “creates a brighter future for everyone”. She was able to get the club started thanks to Hume council’s free Enviro Champions Training program. This year, Hume mayor Geoff Porter is encouraging more residents to take up the opportunity to get their idea for an environmental project off the ground. “The Enviro Champions Program not only provides a free training opportunity, it also allows you to design and deliver an environmental project that can make a real and lasting impact,” Cr Porter said. Residents rally against plan Macedon Ranges Residents Association has called a public meeting as outrage over the state government’s draft Localised Planning Statement continues. The association is calling on residents to fill the Gisborne Mechanics Institute on Tuesday, February 13, at 7.30pm “to send a clear and loud message” to the state government that its draft statement is “not acceptable”. Another residents group, A Forum for Democratic Renewal, has been hosting similar sessions across the shire “to ensure people are well informed” about the draft statement, according to group member Rob Bakes. The draft Macedon Ranges Localised Planning Statement, which will complement new legislation to provide greater protection against “inappropriate development” in Victoria’s iconic areas, was released by the state government for public comment in December. The next state government community consultation sessions and A Forum for Democratic Renewal forums are being held at Woodend Community Centre on February 6, and at Romsey Community Centre on February 8. METHOD: 1. Pre-heat oven to 200C. 2. Chop the potatoes into chips, throw them in a baking tray, smother with coconut oil, then sprinkle with salt. 4. Add a little coconut flour at a time and combine until you get a consistency that is malleable enough to create burger shapes 5. Heat a large pan on medium heat and add a tablespoon of coconut oil and melt, covering the whole pan surface. 6. Roll each burger in coconut flour (smaller ones are a good idea for kids, larger ones for grown-ups) and lightly fry until golden brown then flip, adding more oil if needed. The burgers are ready when they bounce back when you firmly press on the centre. TO SERVE: For children, serve five smaller mini-burgers with tomato sauce or relish, with the chips and a simple salad. SPORT New Gisborne’s young guns ready to fire this season New Gisborne coach Clinton Young said he was expecting his young playing group to take the next step in their development this season. After a couple of seasons rebuilding and developing an exciting group of young talent in the Bendigo Football League, the Bulldogs are looking to rise up the ladder. Young, who was playing assistant coach last season, said he was excited by what the playing group could do. Young replaces Brad Spear who stood down after two seasons. “It’s been great so far,” he said. “It’s an exciting young group and we’ve been

trying to get everyone at training and getting ready for the season. “Most of the guys have played a bit of senior football and a few are in their mid to late 20s, we’re in a good spot. “There’s a lot of good young players and it’s exciting as a first year coach.” Young said while they had yet to speak about season expectations, he was confident on improving from the six wins and seventh-placed finish they had last year. “We’re ready to take the next step in the development and the group is definitely on the right track,” he said. “We were competitive

for periods last season. We beat the three sides below us twice, but we couldn’t beat any side above us. “We were in a lot of games, but weren’t good enough. We’ve got a pre-season under our belts and the group is better connected and hopefully we will get results.” There hasn’t been many changes in the off season for the side. Jack Baker is heading overseas and won’t play much football, if any, but he is the only key out. The club has signed VFL-listed player Ross Celano, while other VFL-listed players Darrean Wyatt and Matt Goodyear will again

be aligned with the club. Wyatt didn’t play a game for the club, while Goodyear, who played juniors with Gisborne Rookies, was injured in his only game for the club last season. Jack James, who spent last year with Coburg in the VFL, returns to the Bulldogs full-time. Young said he was excited by what James could do. “He’s back with us fully,” he said. Ethan Minns, Jack Scanlon, Ollie Clough and Jack Reaper are among the standouts at preseason so far. Tara Murray

Woodend faces a fight By Tara Murray The loss of a couple of late wickets left Woodend sitting on par with Riddell after day one of their two-day match in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. For most of the day Woodend was in control of the match against the unbeaten Bombers, but were left to rue the end. The Bombers were bowled out for 167, a figure Woodend coach Michael Nalesnyik was happy with. He wasn’t as happy after the side faced nine overs at the end of the day and lost two wickets to be 2-12 at stumps. “To restrict them to a bit over 160 I would have taken at the end of the day,” he said. “It hurt to lose a couple of wickets late, including the night watchman. “The game’s probably on par. It’s one of the faster grounds and we need to put together a couple of partnerships to get over the line.” Tom Robson and Peter Manser took four wickets each for Woodend, while Mick Allen led the way for the Bombers making 54.

After having an undermanned batting line-up the previous round against Bacchus Marsh, Nalesnyik said they were getting closer to full strength. However, Nalesnyik won’t play again, as he needs surgery on an ACL injury. The coach said it was slightly different watching from the sidelines. “It takes a little bit to get used to,” he said. “I’m looking at a few other parts of the game and looking where we can improve.” After playing day one of a two-day match on Saturday, Woodend didn’t have long to recover with a one-day match on Sunday, also against the Bombers. Woodend was bowled out for 155, before the Bombers made the runs with more than 10 overs remaining. Nalesnyik said there was one difference in the game, Mick Allen. Allen made 91 not out, including 12 fours and three sixes, to guide his side to the win. “We were 30 to 40 runs short and were outclassed by Mick Allen,” he said. “He’s really good to watch from the sidelines,

but unfortunately if was against our side.” The two matches against the Bombers caps off a difficult stretch for Woodend, which faced the other undefeated side Bacchus Marsh in the previous round. Nalesnyik said he hoped to get the runs against the Bombers this weekend to get a much-needed win and cement their spot in the top four. “We had a poor game last week and now we’re in with a red hot chance against one of the top sides,” he said. “If we play well, we can be right up there. “We might need one more win from the final two games to secure finals. “We’ll see how we go and hopefully finish strongly.” In the rest of the two-day matches, bowlers seemed to have the better of day one. Romsey is 4-77 in reply to Lancefield’s 140, Rupertswood is 0-6 in reply to Gisborne’s 162, Bacchus Marsh is just eight runs from victory against Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bulla has already claimed first innings points against Sunbury United.

Some of Sunbury Lions littlest cubs are champing at the bit to return to the football field this season. After having an under-12 girls team last season, the club will this year have an under-13 girls team due to the change in age groups in the Essendon District Football League where they play. The girls started pre-season training last week, with most of last year’s core group returning. Team manager Laura Jordan said they were looking for a few more players who were wanting to play. “Last year we started off with low numbers, but once the word got around we had a full side by the end of the season. “The girls had a few wins and really enjoyed playing football.” Jordan said with the rise in the age of the division, they were looking for girls who are in grade five and six, and year seven students. The girls will train twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Jordan said if the girls can get to training once a week that would be fine. Matt Ellis, father to one of the girls, will coach the side this year, with plenty of parents stepping up to help out. Ellis works as a PE teacher. Jordan said they were hoping the excitement of AFLW would attract a few more girls to the sport. The Lions are the only club in Sunbury which has three junior teams and a senior team, providing a female pathway all the way through. All three junior sides are looking for players this season. United reels from double dose of defeat Sunbury United’s hopes of a season-defining winning weekend have been dashed by Diggers Rest Bulla. Facing the Burras, who are on the bottom of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup ladder, on day one of a two-day clash on Saturday and a one-dayer on Sunday became a nightmare that put United well and truly in the relegation zone. Speaking before the weekend’s matches United president Chris Linton had been hopeful of a couple of strong performances to cement the side’s spot in the top division. “There have been games where we’ve been lucky and other games we have been unlucky and decisions haven’t gone our way,” he said. “We haven’t been able to find that extra 10 per cent to get over the line when needed. “It’s been a pretty tough year for the club and the guys are still feeling it.

“We’re not where we want to be and are just focusing on trying not to finish bottom.” United’s batting let it down in both matches. On Saturday, United conceded first-innings points to the Burras. United was bowled out for just 92, with Jack Landt top-scoring on 30. Landt, who has recently returned to the senior side, was the only batsman to pass 15. The Burras were 9-217 at stumps on day one. On Sunday, in the one-dayer, United was bowled out for just 84. Adam Billinghurst top-scored with 25. Diggers Rest Bulla chased the target down with ease, finishing on 2-88. The two results could see United slip to bottom of the ladder at the end of next weekend, with two rounds remaining. With the club having had a late promotion journey into the top grade, Linton said just staying in the top division was the aim.

“We didn’t have a really good preparation and it hasn’t helped most of us,” he said. “We weren’t expecting [promotion] or ready for it … hopefully, we can finish the season on a high.” Linton said that in recent weeks, they had been able to get a few more younger players into the top side – a good sign for the future. Damien Edwards and Steven Fogarty have been thrown the captaincy reins in the second part of the season, further helping their development. In other results from the one-dayers, Bacchus Marsh was too good for Sunbury, Gisborne smashed Rupertswood on the back of 182 not out by Danza Hyatt, Ben Way made 102 in Romsey’s win against Lancefield and Riddell defeated Woodend. Sunbury steals victory By Tara Murray Sunbury snuck home against Fitzroy Victoria in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1, at the weekend. Sunbury trailed all day and it wasn’t until the final end that it claimed victory 81 (14)-80 (4). Australian representative Carla Krizanic led the only winning rink for Sunbury, with 8-12. Mark Cowan’s rink had to settle for a draw, finishing 16 apiece. Todd Trewarne’s rink also had a draw, finishing 19-19. Marc Bullows’ rink lost 23-18, but it was able to get the two shots needed on the final end to snatch the overall win. Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was a good win on what can be a difficult green. The win further cements Sunbury’s spot in the top four. It is third, with a 26-point gap to the top two teams and a 29-point gap to fourth-placed Werribee. “It would be nice to speak of a home final, but everything needs to go Sunbury’s way for it to happen,” Glennon said Sunbury faces fifth-placed Essendon (2) this week. Its other three matches are against sides below them on the ladder. It was a good day for Sunbury as five out of the six teams won. Glennon said at this stage two maybe three teams were on track to make finals. Meanwhile, Brad Janner won a fourth straight men’s club championship. Glennon said he’s the only man to win four in a row since at least 1961, according to club records. Janner and Wayne Long finally played the final on Sunday, after it had been postponed twice due to weather. Janner won 27-15. “It’s an absolute fantastic achievement especially for someone who isn’t playing pennant at the moment due to work commitments,” Glennon said. “There was some high standard bowling for both bowlers.” Janner joins Elise Cowan as the club champions this year. Meanwhile in Central Highlands Bowls top division, Kyneton Golf knocked off top side Bacchus Marsh Gold 83. Golf claimed two and half rinks to seal the 98 (15)-83 (3) win against Gold. Ricky Turner and Anthony Mathison led the winning rinks for Golf, while Stephen Taylor had a draw. The result means Golf moves from third to second, while Gold slips to third. The big winner out of that result is Gisborne, which moves to the top of the ladder. Last year’s premiers had a 99 (16)-83 (2) win against Bacchus Marsh Blue. Gisborne sits on top with 139, two points ahead of Golf and five ahead of Gold in a thrilling finals race. Fourth-placed Kyneton isn’t out of the mix either, it’s just 11 points behind Gisborne after a 94 (16)-90 (2) win against Lancefield. Romsey claimed the other match, defeating Trentham 85 (4)-101 (14).

McIntyre Cup sides lose points, money Two Gisborne and District Cricket Association teams will be stripped of points for playing unregistered players in their round eight McIntyre Cup matches. Gisborne and Diggers Rest Bulla have been served infringement notices for not having lodged registration forms for new players within the correct timeframe. The teams will lose three points each and be fined. Their round eight matches were declared draws as rain washed-out the second day. The penalty means Gisborne will slip from third to fifth. The Burras, last on the ladder, will slip to just under seven points behind second-bottom Lancefield. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said numerous clubs had received similar penalties in the past three decades for playing unregistered players. Gisborne president Andrew Headberry said his club had appealed the decision. “We don’t deny the infringement, but the rules on the website state the penalty for it and we won’t accept anything greater than that,” he said. “We think the GDCA aren’t following their rules. “It’s an over-reaction to a simple administration error. “It’s about a little bit of paper not being in the right hands at the right time.” Diggers Rest Bulla president Sean Fitzpatrick said the club did not want to comment. Early innings sets the pace at Gisborne Two sides are well on their way to claiming first innings points after day one of their two-day clashes in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. Eynesbury, which needs to bounce back after a couple of poor matches, is 2-94 in reply to Riddell’s 115, with Tristan Francis taking 6-23 for the Eagles. Wallan’s bowlers had a day out against Gisborne. The Magpies made 175, before running through the Dragons’ batting line-up to have them struggling at 7-26 at stumps. Adrian Barbour was the star for Gisborne earlier in the day, taking 8-65. East Sunbury made 187 against Macedon, with Liam Sherlock top scoring with 57. The Cats will resume at 1-3. In Sunday’s one-day games the top-five sides all got wins. Wallan got home against Gisborne with three wickets in hand and East Sunbury chased down Macedon’s 8-180 with Tom Burnside making 70. Eynesbury’s openers got the runs needed against Riddell, finishing 0-153 in chase of 9-150. Ashfield’s good form with the bat continued against Kyneton putting on 9-215 before restricting Kyneton to 8-162, while ladder leaders St Anthonys’ beat Bacchus Marsh. Mazda, under its Kodo “soul of motion” philosophy in which colour is a prime element of form, has splashed out on a new exotic exterior colour for its popular Mazda3. It follows the success of Soul Red Crystal in the top-selling CX-5 SUV. Since its debut, the colour has proven a fast favourite with customers, involving about 22 per cent of CX-5s sold. Unfortunately, our test vehicle, a Mazda3 Maxx hatchback, was blue, so lacked some of the “soul” imparted by the new hue. Not to worry. The mid-range model at $24,890, plus on-road costs, has much to offer. The Mazda3 range covers six models, all in hatchback and sedan, with two petrol engines and six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In a congested market, it takes more than keen pricing to climb above the crowd. Nobody knows this better than Mazda, so the design of the latest Mazda3 is hardly soulless. A new front grille adds a touch of aggression. Mazda tells us the lower positioning of the Mazda badge and number plate holder hint at a lower centre of gravity. So there. Mazda3 Maxx incorporates MZD Connect, which puts cabin occupants in touch with the internet and provides access to social networking services. Control is via a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen on the central dashboard and multi-function command controller.
