Harnessing new ideas Lancefield’s Alison Noble is riding high – on and off her horse. The 13-year-old’s idea for a memory foam helmet insert that molds to the wearer’s head has been selected as a winner in the national Samsung STEM competition Make My Idea. Alison’s idea is one of only three out of 5000 entries being developed into a 3D prototype. The keen horse rider said her idea came from the challenge of finding a helmet to fit. She said helmets that were too tight caused headaches, but bigger helmets could fall over riders’ faces. Alison’s mother Kim, who also rides, said they knew of people whose helmets had slipped when they fell off their horse, causing them to break their nose. Alison spends a lot of time wearing a helmet as an endurance horse rider. She is Australia’s number one endurance rider in the junior division, having competed against riders up to 17 years of age. Kim said Alison had been asked to qualify to represent Australia at the world championships when she reaches the minimum required age of 14. Alison is currently nursing a broken leg from falling off her horse, but she says she can’t wait to get back in the saddle and see what’s next on the horizon. Serena Seyfort ALISON

Cops deny burglary rise By Serena Seyfort Sunbury, Bulla, Clarkefield, and Diggers Rest homes are more likely to be burgled than the average Victorian household is, according to new RACV burglary statistics. The data reveals Sunbury has also experienced a rise in the number of burglaries, but Hume police dispute this, saying they are seeing a reduction. RACV Victorian burglary statistics put Sunbury’s burglary rate at higher than the state average, with one burglary for every 63 homes

in the 2016-17 financial year, compared to the Victorian average of one in 69 homes. The figures show Sunbury’s burglary risk has increased – last year the town’s risk was below average with one in 72 homes being burgled. But Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Karp said the Hume Crime Investigation Unit was seeing an overall decline in burglaries in Sunbury. He said the unit had recorded 84 burglaries in Sunbury by December 7 last year, compared to 63 burglaries at December 7 this year. “In October, we had only eight burglaries,”

he said. Fourteen burglaries were recorded for the town in November, and 15 were recorded in the first week of December. Senior Sergeant Karp said the rate of robberies went through spikes, but police were pleased with the overall trend. RACV data revealed Diggers Rest to be No.7 on greater Melbourne’s burglary hotspot list, with one in 32 homes being burgled in 2016-17. Even though the rate has improved from one in 23 houses in 2015-16, the rate is more than double Victoria’s average. One in 24 homes were robbed in Bulla last

year, and one in 18 in Clarkefield, RACV data shows. But both towns have less than 250 residences, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistic’s 2016 Census. While Mount Macedon had an average number of robberies, at one in 69, Lancefield was well below average at one in 249, Kyneton had one in 199 and Gisborne experienced one in 173. The RACV said its data was compiled using data from bodies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Crime Statistics Agency.

Councillor’s Cairns link questioned By Serena Seyfort A Sunbury residents group claims Jacksons Creek ward councillor Anne Potter is living part-time in Cairns and failing to properly represent her constituents. The Sunbury Residents Association has written to Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz, claiming Cr Potter had been in Cairns for 59 days out of 110, leaving residents unrepresented at community meetings. In a letter to the minister, seen by Star Weekly, association president Peter Free said Cr Weekly

Potter “is not effectively representing Sunbury residents by virtue of her part-time residency in Cairns”. The association moved at its November meeting to file the complaint. Mr Free queried whether Cr Potter’s “part-time residency in Cairns” satisfied the requirements expected of a councillor. The association claimed Cr Potter attended fortnightly council meetings via video and was unavailable for functions such as meetings of the Sunbury Cemetery Trust and the Sunbury Global Learning Centre community reference

group. Cr Potter told Star Weekly she missed one Hume council meeting on October 9 “due to a personal family matter”, but had kept Hume’s mayor and chief executive informed of her “ongoing critical family commitments”. “I am committed to serving the Hume community as a Jackson’s Creek ward councillor,” she said. “But there are times it is a challenge to balance my community work and family commitments, and my family will always come first, as I would expect anyone would expect me to do.”

Parking permit reminder for shoppers

As Christmas nears and people are out shopping, Macedon Ranges council is reminding drivers it is illegal to use disability parking spaces without a permit. The council issued 22 infringement notices to drivers illegally parking in disability spaces in the 2016-17 financial year. Disability parking spaces are clearly identifiable, wider than average parking spaces and have the international symbol of access displayed on the ground and on nearby signs. Those who park in the designated spaces without a valid permit can be fined $159. Permits must be renewed every three years. Macedon Ranges council community safety manager Anne-Louise Linder encourages residents to leave the designated spaces to those who need them most. She reminded drivers it is also an offence to give a disability parking permit to anyone else. “If you don’t require it anymore, please return it to one of our community service centres,” Ms Linder said. Youth plan for the future

Building a third way to cross Sunbury’s railway line is a priority as the town’s population and traffic surges, according to Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn. Mr Finn called on Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan in Parliament last month, asking her to put plans for Sunbury’s third railway crossing “firmly on her list for action�. “A third railway crossing in town has been on the agenda for many years and locals are now expecting action,� he told Parliament.

Gisborne’s 21-year-old Sebastian Antoine is one of 11 young people who will write Macedon Ranges council’s 2018-2028 Youth Strategy. The young people, all aged between 16 and 25, will lead public consultations and undertake research about what matters most to local young people before writing the plan. The youth strategy will guide Macedon Ranges council’s programs, initiatives, advocacy and support for young people and their families over the next 10 years. Mr Antoine said he was excited about this “fantastic opportunity�. “Most of the co-designers grew up in Macedon Ranges, we’re all young and we know what people are interested in,� he said. He said the 11 young people had already participated in a Youth Summit in Kyneton, alongside more than 70 secondary students from across the shire. “There was a range of topics covered, including mental health, safe spaces and youth-friendly services, and the feedback was great,� he said. There are currently only two ways for vehicles to cross the train line – the level crossing on Gap Road and the Macedon Road overpass. Mr Finn, who uses Sunbury roads every day, said the two crossings were often congested. He said traffic was particularly slow because cars were delayed at the level crossing when a train comes through. An incident at one of the crossings means there is only one alternative route. “There has to be some way people can get to Vineyard Road apart from the two ways we have,� Mr Finn said. “Sunbury is not a little country town any more. Most certainly it’s time we saw some action, particularly with the upcoming growth explosion.� He suggested a link from Jacksons Hill to Vineyard Road. He said he would also push for Opposition Leader Matthew Guy to introduce a third crossing if he is elected as premier next year.

Amnesty results in guns galore By Serena Seyfort Almost 700 guns were surrendered in Melbourne’s north-west in the last month of Victoria’s “most effective” firearm amnesty in more than a decade. This comes on top of 269 firearms that were turned in across the north-west of Melbourne, stretching from the CBD to Whittlesea, in the first two months of the National Firearm Amnesty. A late influx of surrendered firearms in

the closing weeks resulted in more than 9000 firearms handed in across Victoria. The three-month amnesty, which ran from July to September, was aimed at reducing the risk of firearms and weapons falling into the wrong hands by allowing members of the public to surrender firearms without fear of prosecution. Licensing and regulation division’s Superintendent Paul Millett said 9175 firearms, 151 weapons and 103 firearm parts were surrendered in Victoria, representing “the

amnesty was able to put them on the radar,” Superintendent Millett said. Melbourne’s north-west region collected a total of 958 rifles, shotguns and handguns. But this number was the lowest across Melbourne, with 3416 firearms surrendered in the western region, 3701 firearms in the east, and 1056 firearms in the south. While the national amnesty is over, police continue to encourage anyone with unwanted weapons to contact their local police station to arrange a surrender.

Rock research no picnic Friends of Hanging Rock has published the first comprehensive chronicle of the famous landmark. Hanging Rock – A History aims to provide answers to many long-standing questions about Hanging Rock, including the geology, traditional custodians and author Joan Lindsay’s story. Friends of Hanging Rock president Luke Spielvogel said the group thought the rock’s shared landscape “needed to be told”. “Hanging Rock has a profound impact on Australian cultural identity,” Mr Spielvogel said. He said Hanging Rock – A History discussed the current issue of striking a balance between development and the environment. “This book demonstrates that this friction has long existed here,” he said. “This place remains special for visitors who come for a picnic while also being an icon of global popular culture.

“Better understanding that diversity of experience remains our great opportunity to ensure Hanging Rock retains its unique place in the Australian imagination.” Friends of Hanging Rock worked with the book’s author, noted historian Dr Chris McConville, to compile information collated during more than three years of research. Sifting through archives across the world, group members discovered previously unknown material, including the earliest known painting of the rock from 1858 – a watercolour by W.H. Burkitt. Sunbury cases keep cops busy By Serena Seyfort

It is alleged the man is one of four offenders who committed an aggravated invasion in Craigieburn on the weekend of November 24-26. Hume CIU Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Karp said investigations into another 12 home invasions in Craigieburn on the same weekend were ongoing. The Sunbury man has been remanded in custody and was due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Friday. A 23-year-old man has been charged with committing an aggravated home invasion in Craigieburn. The man was arrested last Thursday (December 7) after Hume Crime Investigation Unit executed a search warrant in Keith Court, Sunbury.

Police wish to speak to anyone who saw the silver Commodore sedan in Sunbury at the time. Investigators are also appealing for dashcam footage or CCTV in the area at the time. Ms Allen said the club wanted to see children playing and having fun in the lead-up to Christmas, while fundraising to support the sport. “We’re really wanting to bring Christmas back to Sunbury.” East Sunbury Twilight Christmas Fair will take place at Sunbury’s John McMahon Reserve on Saturday, December 16, from 4-10pm.

East Sunbury Cricket Club is aiming to bring some Christmas spirit to Sunbury on Saturday by hosting its first twilight Christmas fair. Rides, Santa visits and photos, cookie decorating, music, live entertainment and christmas gift stalls will be among the festivities at the club’s Christmas-themed fundraiser. Elsa from Disney movie Frozen will meet and greet children, and there’ll also be a photobooth, Christmas raffle, Spin ‘n Win prizes, showbags and plenty of food and drink on offer. Fair co-ordinator Susan Allen said she felt the Christmas atmosphere had been missing from Sunbury in recent years. “Sunbury doesn’t have many big fundraisers,” Ms Allen said. She said the town had houses decorated in Christmas lights and a great carols event, but the atmosphere of wandering around and engaging in festivity, like can be seen at

Santa will commence on Christmas Eve, starting in the morning at the nursing homes and assisted living communities prior to traveling throughout the town at 12:30pm. Starting in Chessy Park and progressing through the township, keep an ear out for the sirens of our fire trucks that will be approximately 5 to 10 minutes ahead of the fire truck with Santa on board. SPORT Sunbury’s gun young runners ready for relay titles

Sunbury Little Athletics Centre has three teams through to the Little Athletics Victoria 2017 State Relay Championships. The teams, which will compete at Albert Park on Saturday, qualified for the event following the Northern Region Relay Championships last month. Sunbury had 22 relay teams compete at the Northern Region champs, with six teams winning medals. The under-9, under-12 and under-14 mixed 4 x 100 metre teams all ran times that were fast enough for them to qualify for the state championships. Only first-placed teams automatically qualified for the state championships, while the other teams qualify depending on times.

The under-9 team, made up of Joshua John, Natalie Arbanas, Amelia Haxby and Liam Joyce, finished third at the region titles as did the under-12 team, consisting of Jameson Haxby, Brianna Mastin, Lucas Arbanas and Maddison Vowles. Abbey McDonald, Jordan Van Pelt, Liam Denner and Elias Kahsay will compete in the under-14s team. Centre president David Thies said they were thrilled with the results from the region championships. “It can be hard with the relays as it’s at the start of the season,” he said. “For a lot of the kids it’s the first time competing at that level, with a lot of new kids in the program.”

By Tara Murray Two East Sunbury best and fairest winners have returned to the club as it aims for its best Essendon District Football League division 2 finish. The Thunder, who were in finals contention until the dying rounds this season, have made a big focus of trying to get players back to the club. Thunder president Keith Obsorne said getting back some of the boys that know the culture of the club is a massive boost. Kamen Ogilvie, who spent a year in the Central Highlands Football League and was one of the premier midfielders in the division 2 competition before changing clubs, returns, as does Rhys Gardener. “I would say he is one of the best players in division 2 and it’s a coup to get him back,” Obsorne said. “He wanted to challenge himself at a higher level and has now come back. It gives us a bit more midfield depth. “It’ll help take the pressure off Tom Cree.” Connor Lever, young brother of Melbourne recruit Jake Lever, and Riddell District Football League under-18.5 best and fairest winner Shane Lindsay, have also joined the club, adding more midfield depth. Lever is hoping to make the Calder Cannons squad. Extra depth was one area the Thunder focused on after struggling with injuries at times last season. Obsorne said those additions, along with the return of key players from injuries, would help boost the sde. “Jorden Braddy only played four or five matches and has had a strong pre-season,” he said. “Tom Galea is another one … we had a really strong group up to player number 25, but struggled after that. We had to pull players from our under-19s when we had injuries.” Osborne said they were still talking to a couple more potential recruits. He said they were looking to bring in players who will help build the side long-term. Captain Aaron Aqulina has joined Coburg Districts, while Ash Fleming has retired. Osborne said both would be big losses, not just because of their football, but also their leadership. He said he expected next year’s season to be one of the closest in the history of the division 2 competition. Despite this, the Thunder has one clear goal. “Finals are on the radar,” Osborne said. “We played some good football against the good teams including Coburg Districts and Jacana, who were the benchmark. “We need to have more consistency against the teams that are around us on the ladder.” And if early signs are anything to go by, the

Thies said those athletes heading to the state championships were excited to compete at the state’s number one athletics championships. Overall, Thies said it looked like it would be another good season for the Sunbury LIttle Athletics centre. After breaking a club membership record last season, the centre is hopeful of having 200 plus members this season. “Currently we have about 186 members and we’ve got another 25 kids who are going to come and try it out,” Thie said. “Last year was the first time we’ve had more than 200 members and we’re hoping to crack that in the new year.”

The Sunbury Kangaroos are looking for coaches for all of their senior netball grades for next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. The club needs coaches for its A, B, C-grade teams and under-19 team. Any interested coaches must either have or be working towards completing a foundation coach accreditation and hold a working with children check. They must also be able to attend training on Thursday nights and game days. There is a remuneration package available for the A-grade coach, which will be dependent on qualifications and experience. The club is also looking for interested players for all four grades. Trials are likely to be held next year once coaches have been appointed. Thunder has started its pre-season in good fashion. “I’ve never seen the group come back to pre-season so switched on,” Osborne said. “Lucas Shaw is a barometer of the side and I’ve

never seen him as fit as he is. We’re pretty happy with where we are sitting.” Meanwhile the club’s cricketing arm is hosting a twilight Christmas Fair on Friday night.

Sunbury Lions look set to kick off their season next year against Redan in the Ballarat Football Netball League. In a draft fixture released by the league last week, the Lions will host Redan on April 21. Lake Wendouree has a bye. The Lions look set to play one night match, against Melton in round 4, which has been a regular occurrence in the fixture in recent years. Like this year, the Lions will do a lot of their travel in the first part of the season. The Lions don’t travel to Ballarat after round 13, with a range of home matches and games against other sides in the eastern bloc. The BFNL grand finals will be held on September 22 at Mars Stadium. The Lions’ A-grade netball grand final replay against North Ballarat City will come in round 6, while the B, C and D-grade grand final rematches – all between Sunbury and Lake Wendouree – are in round 11.

Review recommends no major changes to leagues The Riddell District and Ballarat football netball leagues will remain in their current format following a review by the region’s governing body, AFL Goldfields. AFL Goldfields looked at four leagues in the region and decided that all four would remain as is, despite general acceptance by clubs across the region that it will be extremely difficult for all current clubs to remain viable. In August, draft findings of the review had recommended splitting Central Highlands and forming a new league consisting of teams from the CHFL and Maryborough Castlemaine District League. AFL Goldfields decided against that plan in the face of difficulties establishing an alternative competition. AFL Goldfields will review the RDFNL

competition again in 2020, with several clubs expressing a strong desire to see the competition split into two divisions. A two-tier competition would likely include some BFNL eastern clubs and possibly Gisborne. The report named Gisborne, Melton, Melton South and Sunbury Lions as clubs which might consider rejoining a reformed division 1 competition in the medium to long term. The report also stated that AFL Goldfields believes that through natural growth, junior clubs Eynesbury and Gisborne Giants would eventually evolve into senior clubs – another reason to have a two-tier competition. The BFNL will stay at 11 teams, with AFL Goldfields not pursuing a move by Sebastopol to the Central Highlands league.

The long term future of the Burras in the BFNL is dependent on them meeting onand off-field achievement targets set by AFL Goldfields next year. The competition still has an uneven number of teams and the report expressed AFL Goldfields’ desire to have another team join the competition. Rupertswood and Buninyong were named as best possibilities. Despite Rupertswood expressing a clear desire to stay in the RDFNL and not switch competitions when the draft was released, AFL Goldfields will still pursue them. If Rupertswood doesn’t make the move, AFL Goldfields will consider another RDFNL team to make the switch to give the BFNL a split of six eastern and six Ballarat-based teams.

Other recommendations in the report include: • AFL Goldfields looking to form a netball umpires association. • Working with local councils to build additional netball courts. • Establishing a player points system for A-grade netball. • Football salary caps to remain at current levels. • Working with the 14 clubs interested in having women’s football teams. • Increasing the number of divisions in the Ballarat competition. • AFL Goldfields to investigate ways to reduce the workload of club volunteers. Late run saves Woodend By Tara Murray Woodend showed its batting strength to be on top after day one against Lancefield in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Looking to cement a top-four spot heading into the Christmas break, Woodend knew it needed to win the match against the lower-placed Lancefield. Things didn’t look good early, with Woodend in trouble at 6-93. But it didn’t panic and was quickly back on top, finishing at 9-307. Woodend playing coach Michael Nalesnyik said it was one of the better comebacks he had seen. “It was a day of two halves,” he said. “At 6-90-odd it wasn’t looking good, so to finish with 307 was really good. It was a fantastic fightback by the boys. “We pretty much bat down to number nine with a couple of allrounders in the team. We know that if we struggle early we can still get a good total.” Warren Else top-scored with 89 coming in at number seven, while Daniel Eastley coming in at eight, made 56. Brett Gardner was the anchor at the top of the innings, while Nicholas Dugdale-Walker made 41 at number nine. Even number 10 Greg Matthews got into the party. While he may have only made 32 not out, it was his highest score in about 10 years. Nalesnyik said Matthews’ innings was one of the highlights of the day. Nathan Malone was the pick of the bowlers for the Tigers, taking 5-106. Nalesnyik said despite the big score, they knew they still had to bowl well on a quick outfield and without star bowler Peter Manser. Woodend currently sits third, behind undefeated Riddell and Bacchus Marsh. A good bowling performance this weekend will help keep the pressure on the top two sides. “A win for us at this stage is huge for us,” Nalesnyik said. “It’s consolidated our spot and hopefully set us in a good spot to get a few more wins and look at finals.” Woodend was the only side to spend the whole day at the crease, with both sides batting on day one in the other four matches. Bacchus Marsh and Romsey have already claimed first innings points against Sunbury United and Diggers Rest Bulla respectively. The Bulls are 9-163, nearly 100 runs ahead of United, who made 66. The Burras are 2-20 in their second innings against Romsey, which declared at 1-81. The Burras were out for 68 in their first innings. Sunbury is well on its way to victory against Rupertswood. Sunbury down to the line Sunbury won a thrilling contest against Brunswick in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 1 section 1 on Saturday. Sitting in third, Sunbury entered the game as favourite but was pushed all the way by Brunswick, which was pushing to close the gap on the top four. Sunbury won 82 (14)-80 (4). Todd Trewarne’s rink won by a 18 shots to give his side a massive lift. Since joining the club during the season, the 19-year-old has lost just one match. However his rink’s win was cancelled out by an 18-shot loss on Mark Cowan’s rink. Marc Bullows’ rink won by three shots, while Carla Krizanic’s rink went down by one shot. Sunbury remains third, but has opened up a 22-point gap on fifth place with one round remaining before Christmas. Sunbury’s David Glennon said a win against Glenroy this week could set up their season. Glenroy is one of two teams above Sunbury on the ladder. “If we can get the win and close the gap, it’ll give a good chance in the new year to try and get a top two spot,” he said. In some good news for the club, Krizanic has been named in the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games for the second time. In Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade, ladder leaders Kyneton Golf suffered a scare against bottom side Bacchus Marsh Blue. Golf managed to win 89 (14)-86 (4). Kyneton lost a thriller to Bacchus Marsh Gold, 92 (14)-90 (4), Gisborne and Lancefield were the other winners. In division 2, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf and Macedon won their matches, while Diggers Rest tied with Woodend.   Tara Murray
