Greater focus is needed on youth mental health, according to Macedon Ranges and Sunbury residents. The tight-knit communities have taken to social media in recent weeks, pleading for help for their adolescents. “We need to be doing more,” one resident posted in a heartfelt message. “Too many members of our community have been prematurely taken from us.” Macedon Ranges council’s Live4Life co-ordinator Pauline Neil said services available to young people needed to be further supported and promoted. “We need to sit down collectively and look at how we can improve that access of support to young people, and really look at providing our community with more education,” Ms Neil said. The Live4Life program, which was awarded the 2017 Community Development Award by Suicide Prevention Australia, educates secondary school children about mental health issues and offers training to parents, carers and teachers. Ms Neil said Macedon Ranges council was planning to host more youth mental health first-aid training sessions that would be open to anyone. She said both the state and federal governments needed to invest in mental health support and how it was delivered. “Imagine if we had on-the-ground youth workers that went to where the young people were – who would go and sit down at the skate park,” she said. Riddell Football Netball Club is one of several sports clubs stepping up its focus on mental health. President Chris Banks said the club was looking at how it could help the mental wellbeing of its members. “We’re definitely going to implement some sort of program to help the kids,” Mr Banks said. “Something needs to be done.” “I always try to look out for the kids - that’s what our club is all about.” One of the club’s coaches recently spoke to players about his own past struggles with mental health to help generate awareness. The club is exploring having a member be trained in youth mental health first-aid, with Mr Banks saying the club hopes the changes it is implementing will complement already existing services in the area. “I think we have enough services, they’re just not well enough known,” he said. Salesian College will be Sunbury central on Sunday. For its bustling Rupertswood Harvest, the college is this year extending the fun – and the fundraising opportunities – to primary schools and community groups. Fresh produce, a petting farm, homecraft, games, face-painting, equestrian demonstrations, pony rides, live entertainment and a range of food will be on offer at the family day. Organiser Kerri Pozaic said the harvest festival was designed to be an affordable way for locals to engage, spend time together and enjoy plenty of old-fashioned fun. “We’ve got gumboot throwing and lots of free activities,” she said. Ms Pozaic said local primary schools and community groups would raise funds by selling produce from their own vegie patches and community groups would host information stalls and give workshops on topics such as worm farming. Salesian College students will showcase work from their agricultural studies and give demonstrations such as sheep shearing. The students will even be selling toothpaste made in their science classes. The Rupertswood Harvest will be on Sunday, October 29, from 10am-2pm at Salesian College, 1 Macedon Street, Sunbury. Sunbury Road anger comes to the surface Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn has demanded the urgent sealing of Sunbury Road where it meets the Tullamarine Freeway. The Liberal MP called on Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan in Parliament last week for urgent action, labelling the state of the road “truly disgraceful”. Mr Finn said Sunbury Road’s extension on to the freeway was the worst surface he had seen on any road. He said the road’s condition was

causing damage to vehicles and had been doing so for weeks. “The people of Sunbury and surrounds have put up with a great deal over the course of the widening of the Tullamarine Freeway,” Mr Finn said. “But I really have to draw the minister’s attention to the state of the Sunbury Road extension.” He insisted a “proper surface” be restored as “a matter of urgency”.

Festive boost for business By Serena Seyfort It is hoped this year’s Sunbury StreetLife Festival will attract people to the streets of Sunbury and bolster support for local businesses. The free event next month has been planned to help grow, acknowledge and support businesses as owners face a difficult retail period. Festival organiser Sharyn Snook said the festivities on O’Shanassy Street, as part of the fifth StreetLife Festival, would provide entertainment for all the family. In addition to the 120 stalls, Wild Action’s Chris Humfreys will visit with his wildlife collection. There will also be live performances, mini golf and plenty of food. Ms Snook said the event was “about breathing life back into O’Shanassy Street”. The local business owner said she thought retail was struggling everywhere, but particularly in Sunbury. “Businesses are struggling because rent’s tough and they need the sales, which they don’t get if people go to Watergardens or elsewhere,” she said. More than 100 businesses have just signed on to a newly-introduced Business Expansion and Retention Program, which will interview staff in the next two months to explore ways to reignite the shopping precinct. The Municipal Association of Victoria program was introduced to Sunbury in August after Sunbury Business Association treasurer and business owner Sylvia Unferdorben pushed for retail reform. At the time, Ms Unferdorben told Star Weekly she had been in Sunbury since 1983 and had never before seen so many closed shops in the town centre. She said she had not seen any improvement in the retail precinct in the past two months. The Sunbury StreetLife Festival will be held on Sunday, November 19, from 10am-3pm on O’Shanassy Street.

The council is encouraging residents to give their feedback on the future of the Baynton Street site, which the school vacates at the end of the term, at two upcoming sessions. Those interested in participating can visit the council marquee at Kyneton Community Park on Saturday, October 28, from 2-4pm. Alternatively, residents can share ideas on Saturday, November 18, from 10am-noon at the council marquee at the Kyneton Showgrounds. Project consultants Ethos Urban, appointed by the council last month, will be at the marquees collecting suggestions. Ideas can also be shared online at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/kps-master-plan or by collecting a survey at a council office. Feedback will close on Wednesday, November 22. The council said feedback would support the site’s master plan. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council wanted to develop a plan that maximised the site’s potential social and economic benefits. “The master plan will reflect the desires of the local community now, and also the needs of the Kyneton community into the future,” Cr Anderson said. College sustains a win Kyneton Secondary College is a winner in the Victorian schools sustainability awards for its work to help protect the brush-tailed phascogale. The school was last week honoured with the title of Biodiversity Secondary School of the Year in this year’s ResourceSmart Schools Awards. SES puts call out for volunteers By Serena Seyfort

Sunbury SES is calling for more volunteers to get on board as the unit prepares to undergo its “biggest shift” in 40 years. From December, Sunbury SES will send two rescue response vehicles to every call-out, each containing at least two qualified crew members. The unit will be required to deploy both vehicles within eights minutes of being notified of incidents, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to new Emergency Management Victoria regulations. Unit controller Anthony White said the change was “the biggest shift” in the provision of rescue services to the Sunbury community in the unit’s history. He said the two-vehicle requirement essentially doubled the number of crews and vehicles needed. He is urging locals to consider becoming daytime volunteers. “Sunbury SES is very confident that we can meet this new challenge,” Mr White said. “However, to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, we are calling out to those in our community who may have time to give during the day to consider joining Sunbury SES.” He has called on retirees, stay-at-home parents, shift workers, self-employed people and students to help bolster the unit’s crews. “People of all ages, abilities and skills are welcome,” Mr White said. “We have members today, who thought they were ‘too old’ or ‘too unskilled’ when they joined, making a valuable and important contribution to the unit.” An information night will be held on Wednesday, October 25, from 7pm at 21 McDougal Road, Sunbury. Dogs and dog lovers from across the Macedon Ranges will gather in Gisborne on Sunday for the annual Paws in the Park fundraiser. As in recent years, hundreds of locals and their four-legged friends are expected to participate in the fun to promote correct pet health. More than $27,000 has been raised for local foundations from the past 10 Gisborne Veterinary Clinic’s Paws in the Park events. This year, the event will raise money for the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Gisborne Pony Club and Adult Riding Club. Paws in the Park participants will walk from Gisborne Veterinary Clinic to Macedon Ranges council’s Gisborne offices where there will be a sausage sizzle, face-painting, a raffle and petting zoo. A Show and Shine will feature vintage and classic cars and motorbikes. Pooches will be able to have their teeth checked and nails trimmed for a gold coin donation. The event costs $10 or $25 for a family of three or more. Participants can register before the event by phoning 5428 2805 or register from 9am on the day. Sunbury residents are being encouraged to stop using plastic bags. Six months ago, Melyssa Edmonds and Bernadette Hetherington started a Sunbury branch of the international Boomerang Bags initiative – and now their first bags are ready to circulate in the community. Using donated fabric and with the help of local volunteers, the pair have sewn about 400 bags that will be launched at their Sewing in the Street party this weekend. From Saturday, the bags will be located at Sunbury Fruit Market at 63 O’Shanassy Street and available for anyone to use.

Ms Edmonds said the bags offered shoppers a free alternative to plastic. “If they’ve forgotten to bring their green bags with them, they can pick up one of our Boomerang Bags instead,” she said. The Boomerang Bags’ Sewing in the Street party will run from 10am-1pm on Saturday, October 28. Nudes, rifts and rock music part in founding it. In 1971 the then 21-year-old TV technician raved to his boss, Channel Nine lighting director John Fowler, about the Wallacia music festival, west of Sydney. When Fowler asked why you’d run such an event, Evans replied: “Fifteen thousand kids times five dollars”. Fowler saw the light and assembled a crack team to stage Sunbury, including soldier and solicitor Graeme Rees-Jones and film director John Dixon as site manager. Premier Henry Bolte and the Country Fire Authority were dead against it, but farmers George and Beryl Duncan offered their land. The 1975 festival was dubbed ‘Mudbury’ after it rained. Fowler claimed radio 3XY over-stated the rain and crowd numbers slumped to 15,000, compared to up to 40,000 in 1972. The organising company, Odessa Promotions, went bust, and the dream was over. But the book, called Sunbury: Australia’s Greatest Rock Festival, is an upbeat and affectionate account of a seminal event in our history. Evans says reports of nudity were exaggerated, and while there was marijuana and mandrax tablets, beer was more popular. For Evans, who went on to work for TV programs including Hey Hey It’s Saturday and The Sullivans, it was “a huge adventure”. “I was not just sitting in the audience. I had a part in it, and that made it really special”.

Today, the band Queen is rock royalty but at the 1974 Sunbury rock festival, they were unknowns who were treated with contempt. Their glam outfits stood out among the jeans and T-shirts, and they were seen as foreign interlopers amid the wave of Aussie pub rock. A roadie for local band Madder Lake mooned Queen, and the crowd threw beer cans and shouted “go home you Pommie wankers”. The band belted out a powerhouse set, but it ended in tears with frontman Freddie Mercury throwing a tambourine at another jeering roadie, and announcing that Queen would be the world’s biggest band. Colourful yarns abound in a new book about the four Sunbury festivals, held from 1972 to 1975. In 1975, an irate AC/DC cancelled their set after the preceding act, British headliners Deep Purple, insisted they wait 30 minutes before taking the stage. And a teenage Jimmy Barnes ran away from his Adelaide home to camp at the festival. Sunbury was dubbed Australia’s Woodstock, but by 1972, rock was trumping the peace and love vibes. Up to 40,000 fans who camped on the natural amphitheatre on a farm at Diggers Rest (it wasn’t actually in Sunbury), each Australia Day long weekend, enjoyed 18 hours of music a day, including Skyhooks, Sherbet, Daddy Cool, and Chain. The book’s author, historian Peter Evans, who was lighting director at three of the festivals, and a spectator at the fourth, played a

New Gisborne’s sporting chance By Serena Seyfort Plans for a long-awaited $12.4 million sports facility on the corner of Barringo and Hamilton roads in New Gisborne have been released. A synthetic sports oval, a grass oval and a pavilion are proposed in Macedon Ranges council’s New Gisborne Regional Sports Field Feasibility Study. The $6.5 million synthetic oval is planned to be constructed first, and would be able to be used as the other works take place.

New Gisborne Regional Sports Fields project committee vice-chair Helen Sankey said the group was “absolutely happy” with the proposed plan. “If we were to get what is included in the plan it would be ideal,” Ms Sankey said. “Now we just have to get funding.” The council has set aside $2.8 million for the 2019-22 project, of which $800,000 was used to buy the land. Ms Sankey said she would be lobbying state politicians to ensure the project received

funding following the state election. Earlier this month the project committee presented plans to the shadow cabinet. This week Ms Sankey will be meeting with Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas. Ms Sankey said the committee was aiming to get as much of the community support behind the project as possible to make sure it became a reality. She said clubs had been forced to knock kids back at Auskick level because the present two grounds – Gardiner Reserve and Sankey

Reserve – had been at maximum capacity for too long. New sports fields in Gisborne have been on the table since the council’s 2006 Leisure Strategy Plan recommended the need to investigate new ovals as a high priority. The council bought the New Gisborne site, across the road from the recently completed Macedon Ranges Netball Complex, in 2015. School’s out forever Kyneton Primary School is getting ready to say goodbye to its home of 161 years. The current school grounds on Baynton Street will be farewelled at a public event on November 11. Principal Alistair Rayner said there was a lot of history and memories attached to the school grounds. “Kyneton Primary School has been on this site for such a long period,” he said. “There are many generations associated with its current site and buildings.” Mr Rayner said the school would love to see a big community turn-out for the farewell event. “We are inviting all of Kyneton to say a goodbye, and especially want past students young and old to come along to share their memories,” he said. “The event, including the annual student art show, will be all about our history and our excitement about the future at our new school.”

Historical artefacts found in the school, such as old ink jars and tin money boxes from a 1930s school banking program, will be on display. The day will also feature student-guided tours of the heritage building, games, rides, food and drink. Kyneton Primary School will start the 2018 school year at its new home on Edgecomb Street. The farewell celebrations will run from noon-4pm on Saturday, November 11. Use of the old school site as a community space is being explored by Macedon Ranges council. Macedon Ranges residents can now watch council meetings from the comfort of their homes. Starting from this week’s meeting, on Wednesday, October 25, council meetings will be live streamed to the internet. Recordings of the meetings will be uploaded to the council’s website within 48 hours of each meeting and agenda items will be bookmarked so residents can choose to view discussion of certain issues only. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the move was an excellent way of increasing transparency about council decisions. “It gives anyone with an internet-enabled device access to the way we debate issues and make decisions,” Cr Anderson said. “This convenience and flexibility is important, particularly when work and family commitments make it hard for residents to attend meetings. “It’s also a great way for ratepayers living outside the shire to stay up to date with local issues.” The recording will aim to avoid coverage of the public gallery. But sounds from members of the public during the meetings will be recorded. The live streams and video archives will be located at www.mrsc.vic.gov. au/livestream.

A range of art on show Artists from across the Macedon Ranges are preparing for their annual exhibition. Origami, pottery, jewellery, watercolours, textiles and even handcrafted books will be among the works displayed at the Buttlejorrk Artists’ 42nd show next month. This year the exhibition will be held in Kyneton, at the Old Auction House at 52-56 Mollison Street, for the first time. The Buttlejorrk Artists’ group was formed in 1976, back when the area was the Parish of Buttlejorrk. Some of the group’s original

members will be exhibiting creations this year. The exhibition will run from Thursday, November 2, to Monday, November 20. The Old Auction House is open from 10am-4pm daily. MY PLACE Brad Radclyffe has been a member of the Sunbury community for 35 years. In August, he was recognised as Hume council’s Resident of the Month for founding the annual Kruze 4 Kids fundraiser. He chats with Serena Seyfort. It’s my good, old hometown. My family moved to Sunbury when I was seven years old, back in 1983. I’ve been here ever since. My seven-year-old daughter now goes to school in Sunbury. Tell us about your Sunbury fundraiser. I organise the big car show that we have on Good Friday up at the soccer club – Kruze 4 Kids. I founded it back in 2010 and we kicked it off in 2011. I spent a lot of time in Royal Children’s Hospital when I was growing up, so I always wanted to do something for the Good Friday Appeal. Being passionate about cars – I used to race out at Calder Park – I decided to put my two passions together, and that’s how the event came about. I organise it with my family. We’ve raised over $50,000 for the appeal in the seven years. Kruze 4 Kids will be on March 30 next year. We have absolutely every type of car at the event. We have race cars, we have new, we have classic, we have vintage, we have sports. You name it – we have it. We also have bikes as well, and it’s a bit of a family day. We have stalls, kids entertainment, amusements, live music. What do you like about Sunbury? I love pretty much all of it. We have a really

good atmosphere compared to other towns. It’s a close-knit town – most people know most people. The schools are great and we’ve got easy access to public transport. I love our parks and our walking trails. It’s a beautiful town. Apart from the fact that I have grown up here, I really love the idea of having the city on one side of us and Macedon Ranges on the other. We’ve got the absolute best of both worlds. Do you have a favourite local spot? I’d have to say the Sunbury United Sporting Club. We have our family dinners up there on a Friday night and they also sponsor our event. That’s my favourite place to socialise. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Parking! There’s no carparking. The town’s getting too big. The logistics of the town don’t work for the population that we’ve got. There’s nothing else I would change – I love it as it is. Where would you take visitors to the area? I enjoy the tracks in Sunbury and I like the Nook and Emu Bottom. And we have some good wineries in the area. We’ve also got a lot of nice restaurants in Sunbury, particularly the outdoor restaurants on O’Shanassy Street.

All is very good. The half-dozen meatballs are chewy and fragrant, and – again – offer more substantial eating than appears may be the case. The currant-studded couscous is marvellous, as are the salad offerings and the rich, sticky tomato sauce. Blackened carrots ($12.90), in a variety of colours and textures, are served with nigella and sunflowers seeds, and topped with coriander and tahini labneh, all lubricated by honey. Parsnip pudding ($13.9) has real-deal parsnip flavour to go with its ginger, currants and spices. It’s served with vanilla crème anglaise and “our own lemon thyme and creme fraiche ice-cream”. This is the stuff of sweet dreams. Brioche bread and butter pudding ($14.50) is every bit as good, served with candied blood orange, manuka honey crunch, mandarin crisps and almond praline. This pair of wonders, and a couple of good cafe lattes, cap off a superb meal in a wonderful setting. There are many interesting eating experiences to be had in the more outlying and rural areas beyond Melbourne’s western suburbs, but CTS has only, over the years, fitfully explored them. Honestly, most often the greater west seems quite vast enough for us. But sometimes, things simply click. In this case, a pal posts online some pics of her family’s up-country Saturday lunch – and we are intrigued and excited. Next morning, off we go! Into the hills and eventually the depths of Lerderderg State Park. The gravel-roaded approach to our eating destination is through dense forest, leading me to envisage our lunch may be of the log cabin variety. But no … the trees eventually give way to a more trimmed and tidy rural scene. The cafe itself is in a modern but cosy building off from the nursery, surrounded by lovely gardens and looking out on to a small lake or dam. The menu, no surprise, is cafe-style tucker split into a range of small share plates, two larger share items and a handful of desserts. Twice-cooked wedges of potato with herbed mayo ($10.50) are fine and very hot. The serve eats bigger than it looks – a recurring theme. A pet CTS dislike are those dodgy and dull Turkish rolls served in so many cafes. So I am delighted to learn the Turkish bread listed online as accompanying the shared braised, spiced meatball dish ($29.50) has been

Student co-curricular experiences include whole school sport and music house events, a compulsory week-long camp from years 3 to 12, regular excursions and overseas tours, and

workshops conducted by visiting speakers, all aimed at providing a wide range of learning and social interactions to instill confidence, personal and civic responsibility and leadership qualities. Public speaking and debating are strongly encouraged. The student captains lead the weekly assemblies, write for the school newsletter and organise fundraising activities. “We have high expectations of our students

acred Heart College provides students with the opportunities to undertake a broad range of experiences. Throughout the recent term three holidays, 15 students from years 10 to 12, along with three staff members, participated in a 17-day cultural immersion trip to Japan. The tripâ€™s focus was language acquisition, cultural awareness and self-development. Students at Sacred Heart College are able

to study Japanese from year 7 onwards. Members of the touring group had a variety of opportunities to utilise the language skills they had acquired at school and in Japan. The experience included a 10-day home stay that provided deeper levels of cultural understanding and awareness. Students who study French have opportunities to participate in similar trips, which run on alternate years. Sacred Heart College has a strong community focus, with students encouraged to recognise and support those in need. A recent example was senior student involvement in a sleep out that took them out of their comfort zones and, with the support of Cobaw Community Health, helped raise awareness and funds for local homeless people. In the recent school holidays, another group of students gave their time to participate in Kyneton Relay for Life, and a number of students work in the community kitchen, operating from the Collegeâ€™s Hospitality Centre to provide hospitality to local people who may find it difficult to access nourishing meals. The College raises funds and understanding for those in need through participation in the whole school annual Colour Run.

efore every formal school meeting and event, Braemar’s leaders open with a Welcome to Country address, recognising and respecting the traditional custodians of the land. Every year, students in our Year 9 cohort at Braemar College are offered opportunities to give that Welcome to Country real context and a sense of place by contributing to Lilla, an indigenous outstation in the Northern Territory. Working with the Watarrka Foundation, Braemar’s Year 9 students experience first-hand the local indigenous community’s way of life. Braemar has forged a long-term relationship with the Watarrka Foundation and the communities it works with. As part of Braemar’s commitment to service in the community, our Year 9 students volunteer and provide assistance in this remote community during their mid-semester break. This year, the group was thrilled to be able to present a $35,000 cheque to the Watarrka Foundation on behalf of Braemar College – an outstanding contribution that has been raised over the course of the relationship. Over the years, Braemar students have been involved in the building of gardens and a playground at Lilla that enable local children to be educated without having to move away from their families. On their most recent trip, the group continued working with the foundation on a project to extend the school with the hope of housing secondary students. Braemar’s donation will go towards this project, as well as other Watarrka Foundation projects in Lilla. The students’ experience enables them to recognise and appreciate the challenges faced by remote indigenous communities. During their time in Lilla, the students’ days are very different to their normal home life. Starting at sunrise, each days’ activities

vary from physical labour and learning and creating traditional art and music to playing and teaching games with the local children and visiting important natural landmarks, including caves and canyons. As a tech-free camp, the Lilla expedition provides opportunities for students to reconnect with the land and to work and play together without the internet or technology. The trip, including sleeping in swags

at night after singing together around a campfire and being treated to sensational sunrises and sunsets of the richest oranges and yellows, gives students a perspective on a way of life so completely different to their own. In a beautiful mirroring of tradition, the visitors are invited to “sign the shed” on their last day in Lilla, not dissimilar to the way that Braemar students are invited to sign the inside of the Braemar House tower on their last day of Year 12.

Real Estate is a strange industry in that Sales Consultants seem to move from company to company and do not appear to stay in one place for very long, however .... there are exceptions. One such “exception” is Garry Seddon. As you know I do not normally write about individuals but I feel Garry deserves a story. Garry grew up in the Macedon Ranges and as a teenager would ride his push bike from Riddles Creek to Romsey. He started his working life in the State Bank and then, close to 30 years ago, he left the banking industry to enter the exciting world of Real Estate, in Wo W odend. In all those years he has only worked for 2 companies but has now embarked on a new adventure at Chess Property Consultants in Romsey. I first met Garry in 1996 when, as a sole mother, r was endeavouring to buy a home with little r, money and a lot of fear. r The things that impressed me r. the most about Garry and that have stayed with me were his kindness and understanding. Many women, particularly those on their own, will have experienced a feeling of being somehow not terribly important or of being unworthy of being taken seriously. Sadly this is true with banks, car salesmen and very sadly real estate sales people. This is changing but all too slowly. Garry Seddon at all times was a complete gentlemen and treated me with the utmost respect as he does his wife, daughters and all his many clients.

SPORT Burras make a strong declaration of winning ambition Diggers Rest is hoping to take its netball program to the next level following the appointment of Pam Strong as A-grade coach for next season. Strong brings an extensive coaching and playing background to the Burras. She hopes to impart that knowledge on the players. She has been an Australian squad member and a state representative. She’s coached zone academy, underage state teams and Victorian Netball League teams. While she hasn’t coached at the Burras before, Strong is no stranger to the club – her daughter, Shelby Strong, was part of the A-grade side for

the past two years and will continue to play next year. Strong said she was looking forward to the challenge. “I’ve always coached netball, but I haven’t coached football netball before,” she said. “I haven’t coached the last two years due to work and enjoyed the break, but I’m ready to get back into it. I’ve been out there watching the girls and know it’ll be a good challenge.” She said the Burras’ good club environment was one of the reasons she was happy to take on the role. It’s something Strong says can be lacking at higher levels. In a big boost for the Burras, former coach

Amy Carroll will stay on as a player. Carroll, one of the top players in the competition, shared this year’s Ryan Medal as the league’s best and fairest winner. Strong said she was happy to have Carroll focus on her playing. “It takes the pressure off her on the court, especially when it comes to finals,” she said. “I used to coach Amy back in the day at the AIS and I know her well. I’m looking forward to working with her again.” Strong said her aim was to continue building on what Carroll had done in the past two years. The side made finals both years, but was

knocked out in elimination finals, unable to quite match it with the top teams. “The club is heading in the right direction,” Strong said. “I don’t think we need to bring in too many players. We have players coming through our Bs, Cs and under-19s.” The other Burras netball coaches are expected to be named in coming weeks. Strong said all four sides would do a lot of work together. “We’ll all train together and there’s times we’ll train with the footballers,” she said. “We’ll mix everything up.” Tara Murray

Sunbury’s solid victory By Tara Murray Sunbury made it two wins in a row in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 with a strong win against Melton on Saturday. Both teams were looking to take their records to 2-1, but it was the away team that came out on top. Sunbury won three of the four rinks after trailing by one shot at the break to win 84 (16)-68 (2). Marc Bullows’ rink remains undefeated after winning 20-14, Carla Krizanic’s rink had the biggest win of the day winning 22-12 and Elise Cowan’s rink won 23-19. Mark Cowan’s rink lost 23-19 in what was a tight contest all day. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was good to take 16 points against a Melton side that is always hard to win against at home. He said Krizanic and Mikalya Long were two of the standouts for the side, in what was a good day for the club, with four of its six sides winning. Glennon said consistency in the top side had been the key in the past two weeks. “We haven’t had many changes so far this season,” he said. “It’s very unusual to have virtually the same side every week. It’s good that people can continue to play and get the consistency of playing with the same players.” Sunbury is fourth on the ladder on 36 points, behind three undefeated teams. One of those teams, Moonee Valley, will be Sunbury’s opponent this week. Glennon said it would be a good test. “This week was a confidence booster for this match,” he said. “We played Glenroy [which is also undefeated] in the opening round and only lost by six shots. This is another test for us.” Meanwhile, Gisborne’s title defence got off to the perfect start in Central Highlands Bowls division’s top grade with a 108 (14)-90 (4) win against Romsey. Kyneton Golf won a thriller against Lancefield 102 (14)-99 (4), while Bacchus Marsh Gold got the points in the battle of the Bacchus Marsh teams, beating Bacchus Marsh Blue 96 (14)-69 (4). In division 2, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Red, Kyneton Golf and Woodend were the winners. In division 3, there was four one-sided matches with Kilmore, Kyneton Red, Gisborne and Macedon having 16-0 wins against Diggers Rest, Romsey, Trentham and Kyneton Blue respectively. Cannons fire in AFLW draft Three Calder Cannons players were among those selected in the second AFLW draft on Wednesday. As expected, Chloe Molloy and Monique Conti were taken in the first round. Both had long been touted as possible number one draft picks. Molloy was taken at pick three by Collingwood, a club her uncle Jarrod Molloy played with. In her first season of football, Molloy had an impact at both VFLW and TAC Cup level. She scooped the pool in the TAC Cup, sharing the best and fairest award and led the goalkicking. She was joint winner of the goalkicking award in the VFLW. Conti is the latest player to become a professional dual athlete. Already with a Women’s National Basketball League contract, Conti was taken at pick four by the Western Bulldogs. The talented midfielder is planning to continue combining the two sports, both which she is highly rated in. While Molloy and Conti were expected to be selected, Sarah Dargan was one of the surprise packets. Dargan, who plays with Pascoe Vale, was selected by Collingwood at pick 20. The midfielder was one of the Cannons best this season, finishing third in the best and fairest count behind Molloy. She was also part of the Vic Metro team this year. Bernacki bounces back to win best and fairest Brad Bernacki’s determination to prove people wrong was the catalyst for him taking out the Robert Hyde Medal as the Calder Cannons best and fairest. After missing out on selection in the Vic Metro squad, Bernacki sat down with talent manager Ian Kyte and coach Andrew Johnston to talk about his game. “I had a better season after round five and really picked up the pace,” he said. “I had the review with Kytey and Johno and we said the best thing for me was to try and be the best player outside Vic Metro.” From that point Bernacki’s game lifted another level – he was not only a standout player for the Cannons, but the competition. He finished second in the Morrish Medal for the TAC Cup best and fairest, and on Friday night collected the Robert Hyde Medal ahead of Jack Bytel and Mitch Podhajski. Despite his standout season, Bernacki didn’t think he was going to take home the award.

“I thought Pods, Jack Bytel, Noah Bolta or Jake Riccardi would win it. “Pods had a really good start to the season and that could have set him up for the win. “It’s a real privilege to win the award. “Looking at the past winners, it’s a real honour.” Bernacki also took out the Cannons’ most courageous award. The award night capped off a good two years for Bernacki who burst onto the scene early last year. He finished third in the club’s best and fairest award last season and this season was named captain of the side. Bernacki said being named captain was a special honour. “That was chosen not only by the coaches, but the players as well. It’s another stepping stone.” The 17-year-old, who is aligned with East Sunbury, says an AFL career remains the dream despite the setbacks.

“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve wanted to play AFL. I would sit out the front kitted in my Essendon gear. “A big motivating thing has been setbacks along the way,” he said. “Missing out on the draft combine is another one. You have to step up and keep going. “I’ve done everything I can to be picked, I’ve got to now wait for November.” Between now and the draft, Bernacki is planning to continue doing what he can to try and get drafted. In other awards, Podhajski was named most improved, Jacob Nicol won the coaches award, Bytel the team targets award, and Lachlan Sholl the best on track. Woodend’s batsmen fire By Tara Murray An even batting performance from Woodend has guided the side to its first win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season. After a disappointing first-up loss, with a middle and lower order batting collapse, the Woodend batsmen stood up against Romsey on Saturday. Needing 273 for victory, Woodend did it with ease with seven of the top eight batsmen reaching double figures. After making the runs six wickets down, Woodend batted on making 7-367 from its 80 overs. Woodend coach Michael Nalesnyik said it was a pleasing performance with the bat. “Our home ground has a really fast outfield and we knew if we could bat the overs out we could get the runs,” he said. “We had four of our top/middle order batsmen make over 50. To make a score well over 300 was really good. It was always going to be a tricky run chase.” Warren Else top-scored with 83 not out, backing up his four wickets taken on day one of the match. Peter Manser also had a good all round performance making 75, having taken five wickets on day one. Nalesnyik, who made 69 himself, said the return of Manser to the club had been a big boost. “Warren is always a consistent performer and with Pete we have two top all-rounders. “We think Pete was the missing ingredient last year, a big spearhead quick, who can also make some runs. “We’ve got him batting in the middle order. All the blokes know him and he’s fitted in well.” Nalesnyik said besides a couple of players in the lower grades, the club had managed to retain its whole playing group, with a lot of depth across the board. Woodend now faces Sunbury, which is coming off a big loss to Riddell. In other matches, Gisborne claimed its first win of the season defeating Lancefield. Resuming at 2-40, the Dragons made the 170 needed without losing another wicket. They were bowled out for 262. Sunbury United had a big win against Rupertswood. Chasing 8-297, Rupertswood was bowled out for 165. Rupertswood was 4-140 in its second innings. Diggers Rest Bulla managed to avoid conceding an outright loss to Bacchus Marsh, which had claimed first innings points last week. Bacchus Marsh made 8-282, with the Burras making 5-52 in their second innings.

President’s push for more bowls players The Central Highlands Bowls Division’s new president said the association needs to continue to move with the times if they are to keep players in the sport. Glenn Arthur, who took on the role in the middle of the year, said it was a defining time for the sport with declining numbers across the board. Involved with Bacchus Marsh, Arthur decided to step up to the president’s role to help make a difference. “Since returning from the Ballarat Premier League to the CHBD I have listened to a lot of comments from bowlers of all CHBD clubs about the decisions made by the CHBD committee, the current state of the competition and the future of the CHBD,” he said. “Rather than just listen, I thought I would do something about the issues and so I nominated for the position.” Arthur said player numbers was the biggest concern in the division and they had started to work on initiatives to try and attract players. They are working closely with Bowls Victoria on some of those ideas. “The CHBD has to realise that we have to move with the times,” he said. “We cannot just keep doing things the way they have always been done. “My aims for the CHBD is to stop the declining numbers in our sport and to see the CHBD grow stronger and to be more competitive against other regions. “This can only happen with a lot more help from members of every club with participation at CHBD committee level, clubs agreeing to common goals and everyone working hard.” The CHBD competition got underway on Saturday. Arthur said the later start meant they had the same number of rounds before and after the Christmas break. “We used to play nine games before the Christmas break and five games after the break before finals. Due to the different numbers of sides in Division 2 & 3, the finals and grand finals occurred over different weekends. “The clubs voted at the start of last season that this year we start a bit later, play the same number of games before and after Christmas and it allows us to play all division grand finals on the same weekend. By Tara Murray Some Matthew Livingstone magic led Riddell to its second straight victory in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Livingstone ripped through Sunbury’s top and middle order to turn an even contest on its head. The Roar started well chasing 9-295 and had plenty of wickets in the shed to attack the target at 1-78 nearing tea. Enter Livingstone. In a brilliant spell either side of tea, he took five wickets as the Roar crumbled to 6-91. Bombers captain-coach Mick Allen said Livingstone’s spell turned the game in their favour and it was good to see his effort rewarded. “He bowled his heart out,” Allen said. “In the 15 minutes before tea, he took three wickets and it changed the whole game. He’s one of the unluckiest bowlers I’ve seen, especially last year. “We bowled tight and the run rate continued to increase and put more pressure on them. Once it got to six runs an over, it got really hard.” The Roar never recovered and were bowled out for 117, with Justin Nelson top scoring with 40. The win is the Bombers’ second straight to start the season – a stark contrast to last season, in which they struggled early. It is a positive sign for a side that looks very different to the one that claimed the minor premiership. Youth is the direction the Bombers are taking early in the season – one they want to persist with. Allen said the playing status of some of the more experienced players remained unknown. Among those not playing at this stage are Heath Wadden, Jack Baker, Brendan Alger, Matthew Darby and Elliott Artingstoll. “We had four young kids in round one and two were still in the side in round two, with two out for school cricket,” Allen said. “Samuel Dempsey is 15, Harry Fisher is 14, Alex Ryan is 17 and Ben Radford is 16 – there’s some good talent there. “We want to push them through and give them opportunities. If the others come back, that is a bonus. We’re giving opportunities to the guys who have done the hard work in the pre-season.” Despite the changes, Allen thinks the Bombers will have enough talent to be in the mix come finals, with improved batting the key. Bacchus Marsh, Woodend, Sunbury United and Gisborne were the other winners on Saturday.

Netball

The Sunbury Kangaroos are looking for netball coaches for next season. The club is looking for A, B and C grade coaches, along with an under-19 coach. The club is also looking for a netball co-ordinator and players. Contact 0400 408 019 for more information. Applications close November 2.

Bob McLennan has won the qualifying round of the Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield. McLennan took the win on a day when a number of players posted good scores. He’s one of eight golfers through to the quarter-finals. Jenny Hartley, Jan Horver, Elaine Scanlon and Wendy Gosden are the last four left in the women’s knockout singles competition.

Cricket

The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges district veterans cricket team fell short against Mornington on Sunday. Mornington made 7-207 from its overs, with Alan Dober taking 3-47. In reply, Sunbury made 7-183. Morrie Boccabella made 40 retired and Dave Cordy made 41 not out.

Netball

Macedon Netball Club will be holding trials for all teams for next year’s season. The Cats will hold trials on November 11 and November 18. Open trials will be held between 9.30-noon and under-19 between noon-2pm. Registration forms must be completed by November 6 and are available from macedoncatsfnc@gmail.com

Cricket

Macedon has claimed its first win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Kyneton resumed at 5-48 after bowling Macedon out for 122. Macedon gained the upper hand early on day two with the wicket of Kyneton skipper Ben Stokes for nine. Kyneton eventually was all out for 96. Macedon finished 6-81 in its second innings. Kyneton begins its season with a solid victory Kyneton’s women’s side made a winning debut in the Country Basketball League north west competition. The Tigers are this year fielding both men’s and women’s sides in a bid to try and keep district players playing for the local club at senior level. The women’s side opened its ledger with a winning game on Sunday against Castlemaine Lady Cannons. The Cannons got off to the better start and were able to put some points on the board. However, the Tigers changed their defensive set-up and started to hit the scoreboard. The Tigers took control of the game and opened up a 10-point lead, before the game blew out late for a 76-49 Tigers win. Jess Mangan top-scored with 17 points, while Michelle Fletcher chipped in with 14 points.

Both players have been leaders throughout the pre-season and provided a presence in the paint on Sunday. Molly Greetham was also busy with 10 points. Brooke Mangan shot well from the outside hitting 11. Rochelle Mangan, Rebecca Dekazos and Adele Rogers all provided an outside presence. Chelsie Alcaraz’s defence was also a highlight. It was a tough weekend for the Tigers men’s side which lost both its matches. On Saturday night, the Tigers faced Mildura Heat in front of a big crowd at Kyneton. It was an even first half with the Heat leading by one point at half-time. The Heat blew the game open, with a 44-28 second half to win 79-62. AFL star Nathan Thompson scored 11 points, returning to a sport he played as a junior. It was a lot closer on Sunday against Castlemaine Cannons, with the Tigers losing 52-47. Affordable Astra fits the bill By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Holden is very serious about its small-to-medium Astra range. In December 2016 it launched a five-door hatch; a four-door sedan – the subject of this test in topline LTZ format – came out in June this year, and a station wagon will be added to before the end of the year. Sales of the hatch weren’t as high as GM-Holden anticipated and weren’t helped by the traditionally slow January/February holiday AND back-to-school periods. So recommended prices were dropped a few months after the launch to try and kick things along. Astra sedan prices probably started lower than originally anticipated, from $20,490 through to $29,790, putting them right into the thick of the fray in this class. The Astra sedan is built in a GM factory in South Korea. It’s finished to the very high standard that has impressed us in vehicles from that country in recent years. Holden Astra sits on all-new vehicle modular architecture that trims weight by as much as 120kg compared to the old model. This adds performance while at the same time fuel consumption decreases. The front seats are a good size, and comfortable in normal driving, there’s less side support than you may like if you do hammer it along.
