Family walks for prems Almost three years ago, Gisborne’s Fiona Hale gave birth to twins Lily and Penelope just 25 weeks into her pregnancy. Tragically, Penelope passed away three weeks later. This month, the Hale family will honour Penelope’s memory and support other premature babies during the national Walk for Prems fundraiser. Fiona said her family was taking part in the event so Lily would grow to understand about being a prem and about her sister. The Hales walked in the 2015 event, but last year Fiona was pregnant with now eight-month-old James. “It will be something we do every year,” Fiona said. Walks for Prems is the largest annual fundraiser for Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, which supports families with babies born sick or before 37 weeks gestation. Participants will pause at the beginning of each gathering and white doves will be released to show respect for the babies that have died. The Melbourne event will take place on Sunday, October 29, from 9am at Palms Lawn, Albert Park Lake in Albert Park. FM radio host Matt Tilley will be the Melbourne ambassador. Cash boost for flu fight By Serena Seyfort Kyneton’s hospital is getting $92,844 from the state government as it copes with one of Victoria’s worst-ever flu seasons. According to Kyneton District Health Services, the hospital has experienced a hike of more than a third in patients seeking urgent care for respiratory illnesses. the hospital’s staffing situation was also being impacted. Kyneton District Health Services deputy chief executive Karen Laing said there had been a 35 per cent increase in the number of people presenting to its urgent care centre with respiratory illness in the past three months compared to the same time last year. She said many of those patients were confirmed as having the flu. “Some have required admission here in

Kyneton, some have been transferred to Melbourne or Bendigo for further treatment,” she said. Ms Laing said staffing had also been affected by the contagious virus, with the amount of sick leave being taken by staff “at an all-time high”. Victorian health department data shows that as of October 3, 145 Macedon Ranges residents had been known to contract flu this year, compared to the 79 cases known last year.

In Hume, 476 cases have been reported, while only 350 were recorded last year. The death toll in Victorian aged-care facilities from the flu has reached 116. Young and otherwise healthy Victorians have also been killed by the virus, including an eight-year old Melbourne girl and a Bacchus Marsh father. The funding comes as part of the $115 million being delivered by the Victorian government to the state’s busy hospitals.

Sunbury’s cheap rental option By Serena Seyfort Sunbury is one of the cheapest Melbourne suburbs to rent a house, new rental data has revealed. Three-bedroom houses have come in as particularly low priced compared to other suburbs, but a local expert says good quality homes in Sunbury are still performing well. The median rent of Sunbury’s 885 rental properties was $340 in June – compared to the Melbourne-wide median of $400, according to the Department of Health and Human Services’ latest rental report.

However, Sunbury’s median rent does mark an increase on June last year, when it was $330. Sunbury’s 355 three-bedroom rental homes have one of the lowest median rents across Melbourne at $355, compared to the city-wide median of $380. Brad Teal Real Estate business development manager Alisha Mcfarlane said prices could have been “a little bit more conservative” because there was a lot of stock on Sunbury’s rental market. “At the moment there’s a huge amount of stock for lease,” she said. properties available was a combination of recently completed development sites and houses being bought by investors. “There’s been a lot of out of town and interstate investors looking at Sunbury at the moment, so they’re then putting homes that were once owner-occupied onto the market,” she said.

But Ms Mcfarlane said she was a little surprised by the data showing Sunbury as having cheaper rental prices. “By the same token I would still suggest that a good quality, family home in a good location, or even a townhouse in a good location are still performing really well,” she said. “If you’ve got a good quality family home in the right location, they still do achieve a pretty reasonable return.” Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 census results revealed that 21.2 per cent of Sunbury residents are renting, while 76.4 per cent are homeowners.

Purrfect day out for pets Sunbury’s Tahlia and Bella-Anne are prepping pets Dusty and Chester for their appearance in the Pet Parade at Sunbury Show on Saturday. This weekend’s show marks the 97th grand annual Sunbury Agricultural Show. Novelty section organiser Anne Clements said the 97th show was set to be entertaining for everyone in the community. “We’ve got a lot of highlights in the show,” Ms Clements said. In charge of the pet events, the grandmother said the Pet Parade would be returning for the 27th year to show off adored pets. Various breeds of dogs, hamsters, chooks, rabbits, goats and sheep will be carried and led in a procession by children and adults. Pets can also be entered to receive prizes for the longest tail, best costume and most well-behaved. But Ms Clements said the show’s main

highlight would be the contents of the pavilion, featuring arts and crafts, floral art, cake decorating and preserves. She said sheep trials would also return to the show for the second time and trucks would be parked for children to explore. Sunbury Agricultural Show will take place on Saturday, October 14, from 8.30am-4.30pm at Clarke Oval in Sunbury. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children and competitor passes cost $30. A 23-year-old Sunbury woman was using her mobile phone while driving north on the Bolte Bridge before colliding with a vehicle in front of her last week, according to police. The crash caused her vehicle to flip and roll, landing the passenger, a 28-year-old Sunbury man, in hospital for observation. The female driver tested positive for drugs, police say. A 25-year old Sunbury man who drove to pick her up also allegedly tested positive for drugs.

New look for Hanging Rock

A $3.15 million development of Hanging Rock’s amenities and landscape has just been completed. Senator Jane Hume and Macedon Ranges council mayor Jennifer Anderson unveiled the finished Hanging Rock Infrastructure Development Project last week. The East Paddock has been upgraded to encourage visitors to hold picnics and events, reducing the pressure of visitation on areas near the rock. Two picnic shelters including toilets, barbecues, seating and car parking have been built in the East Paddock. Cr Anderson said it was important to protect the environment while catering for the next generations of visitors. “Hanging Rock experiences increasing visitation every year and it is hoped that the new picnic shelters will help to do this,” she said. Power supply to this area, as well as lighting, water and power distribution infrastructure, has also been installed. The main reserve has received lighting improvements and electrical upgrades. To expand wildlife habitat and contribute to conserving biodiversity, more than 1500 trees have been planted. Landscaping at the viewing mound and amphitheatre have also been finished. The project was funded by more than $2 million from the federal government and more than $1 million from Macedon Ranges council.

A Gisborne woman has triumphed in a nationally renowned equestrian event at the Royal Melbourne Show. Catherine Neill won the prestigious 83rd Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout on her horse SLM Mercedes last week. Neill said winning the title was an “absolutely amazing” feeling. “I was in so much shock – it was just so unexpected,” she said. “It was a great honour.” In the competition, run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, 23 riders competed before six judges in the event for females aged 18 years and above. RASV chief executive officer Mark O’Sullivan said the event was the most prestigious female riding contest in the country and a highlight of the Royal Melbourne Show. “The Garryowen has a long and prestigious history of recognising the country’s best female riders and we are delighted to add Catherine to our list of winners,” he said. It’s been a good year for Neill and SLM Mercedes – in April, they were named the reserve champions in class 18 at the 25th Anniversary Grand Nationals in Sydney. The Gisborne rider has been horse riding for 30 years – since she was three years old. She entered her first Royal Melbourne Show when she was 10 years old. “I’ve done a lot of them,” she said with a laugh. And she said there would be plenty more. “We’ll be going again, for sure,” she said. “We’ll see how we go next year.”

Birds, wine on Cloud 9 By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges’ birdlife will be under scrutiny this month. A free, unique bird watching experience is being offered at Cloud 9 Farm in Pipers Creek on Saturday, October 21. Owner Alan Deeble will take visitors to see the woodland birds on the property, which adjoins Cobaw State Forest. Mr Deeble said a range of local birds inhabited the land. “We’re very fortunate,” he said. “We get eagles … we get lots of kookaburras and plovers,

and the fairy wren, which is native to our area.” Attendees will be able to enjoy the farm’s mulled wine and cheese after bird watching. Cloud 9 Farm was selected for the Excellence in Agribusiness award in the 2017 Bendigo Bank Macedon Ranges Business Awards. “It’s a big thing for us,” Mr Deeble said. “We believe we are part of the agricultural business of the Macedon Ranges.” “We do three core segments of production.” Cloud 9 Farm milks its own cows to make cheese, and grows its own grapes for its own wine. The owners then sell their products and host

visitors at their beautiful cellar door. “We like people to come to experience what a small farm can do,” Mr Deeble said. Macedon Ranges council and local bird experts will also host a free bird watching event and breakfast on Saturday, October 14, at Barringo Bushland Reserve in New Gisborne. Bookings are essential for both events. Kyneton racecourse and Hanging Rock Racing Club are expected to host more racegoers this season thanks to a promotional push. The state government is giving Country Racing Victoria $980,000 from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund to promote regional race meetings. Country Racing Victoria has said it would add a contribution of almost $1.6 million to the campaign. CRV chief executive Scott Whiteman said the numbers at racing events were set to rise. “Victorians are attending country and picnic races in record numbers, and this year’s program promises to be the biggest and best yet,” he said. According to a statement from Racing Minister Martin Pakula, attendance at country and picnic race meetings has grown by more than 45 per cent since 2015. More than 370,000 people are expected to go to country meetings this spring and summer. Macedon Ranges will host three main country racing events in the coming season. The Kyneton Cup meeting will be held at Kyneton racecourse the day after the Melbourne Cup, which falls on November 8 this year. Salesian above the herd A local school has had success at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show. Salesian College Sunbury’s agricultural entries took out the title of Reserve Champion Simmental cow and were awarded a first, second, third and fifth ribbon placing in handling displays. The school’s steers also received a fourth and sixth ribbon placing. Students Jamie Vosper, Alice Metrivics and Tim Smith led the animals in the competition. Jamie said it was great to be able meet other

entrants at the show. “Being able to socialise with others who share the same interest as us helped make the experience so memorable,” he said. “Attending the show gave us the opportunity to bond with our cattle outside of the college, which I really enjoyed.” Salesian College Sunbury students take part in agriculture activities on the school’s campus, including livestock skills and crop production. A new way for young Macedon Ranges people aged 18 to 25 years to make connections and socialise has been created. Run by Macedon Ranges Health, the After Dark Group will offer monthly meetings with the first to be held on Thursday, October 12. Organiser and community health nurse Louise Beer said friendship groups tended to change when young people finished school and went off on different paths, and that sometimes led to feelings of social disconnection. Ms Beer said there seemed to be support groups for younger adolescents across the area, but not older adolescents and young adults. The After Dark Group will be a free program and what group members do will be determined by the participants. Ms Beer said activities could range from movie nights to guest speakers chatting about subjects such as budgeting and resume writing. The group will meet monthly at 76 Hamilton Street, Gisborne, led by community health nurse Gaby Cornish. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, October 12, from 6-7.30pm. Cuppa treats from camel teats When demand grew for unpasteurised milk, I was fine with that. I grew up on milk my dad dexterously squeezed from the udders of Daisie or Brownie or Goldie, whichever cow was grazing our cowpat-strewn paddock while others fattened up on ‘the common’. That milk made the best ice-cream ever and, after settling, produced a top layer of rich cream that went atop every dessert and even on brekky cereal and porridge. Shop-bought milk (in bottles) was rare for us self-sufficient country folk.

But now I find that camel’s milk has made its way into cafes and restaurants. Milk, at about $25 a litre, from a camel? A beast that spits, has appalling breath and body odour from 40 paces? Yes, camel’s milk is the new ‘superfood’, the panacea for tummy gremlins, some say, and with more protein, vitamins, iron, calcium and less lactose than cows’ milk.

SPORT New Sunbury coach ready to get down to business It was quickly down to work for new Sunbury Kangaroos’ senior coach Anthony Leydin. Appointed late last week, Leydin was already preparing for a few big weeks getting up to scratch with everything at the Riddell District Football League club. “It’s happened fairly quickly,” he said. “It’s something that I wasn’t contemplating a month ago. “I’m a little bit behind the eight ball and I have to make up for lost time and get on with the job. “I don’t know much about Sunbury … I watched a few of the finals games, so I’ve got a fair read on the benchmark of the competition.” Most recently, Leydin coached Tullamarine for the two and half seasons before the club decided to go in a different direction in July. In his time in charge, Leydin took the side to a preliminary final and grand final, and they played finals again this year.

He was previously involved with fellow Essendon District Football League sides, Westmeadows, Strathmore and Greenvale. He said the results he’d had with Tullamarine gave him plenty of confidence, with many outsiders writing them off each season. Leydin said the break from football gave him the chance to reflect. “I thought I had something still to offer,” he said. “I’m a footy tragic and thought at some point I would get back into coaching and throw my hat in the ring. “I met with Sunbury and was impressed with how they presented themselves and who’s involved.” Leydin said he knew little about the playing group and his first job would be getting his head around where things are at. “There will be a fair bit of time discussing and mapping things out,” he said.

“It may involve re-signing players or going out and recruiting players. It’s about getting the right characters in the club.” Leydin will put his coaching panel in place over the coming weeks and said it would likely involve a mixture of new and existing people from the club. He said it was about ensuring there was a smooth transition and using the personnel already at the club. Leydin replaced Jarrod Dixon as coach. The Kangaroos finished sixth and seventh in his two years as senior coach. The new coach said it was about building on that. “When you finish sixth and seventh the last two seasons, you’re not in any position to make bold predictions,” he said. “We’ll set the bar high, but for now we’re just dealing with the here and now.” Tara Murray

Win for revamped Roar By Tara Murray A new-look Sunbury outfit has claimed the points against cross-town rival Sunbury United in the opening round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. With five new players joining the club, the match was the first real opportunity for the Roar players to see what they could do. New captain-coach Dylan Wright said he couldn’t have asked for more. “It felt tight towards the end of the game, but I thought we were in control for most of the game,” he said. “I thought the scoreboard flattered them. “With five new blokes, including myself, and with the weather we’ve had, we haven’t had a lot of practice. It was sort of like a practice match for us.” After winning the toss, the Roar made 7-172 off its 40 overs. Mark McPherson, one of the side’s new players, top scored with 42. Wright thought his side could have posted a higher total.

“For a lot of the innings, it looked like we would have got a bit more,” he said. “They ended up putting fielders in front of the wicket and bowled full and straight. They halted our scoring and we lost wickets in clumps. “Just a little bit more would have been good.” In reply, United was in trouble at 5-89. It steadied a bit, but was unable to find the massive partnership it needed. The Roar claimed the final three wickets for 13 to bowl United out for 159 in the final over. Brad Hunter took 4-30, which included four of the last five wickets. Wright said all the new players contributed when needed. He said McPherson had played in the competition before, but went back to his home club. “He lives in Sunbury and was sick of travelling,” Wright said. “Brad [Hunter] had a couple of years off, but he has been able to free some time up to have another crack. “Ajay Sood was good and Steve Maitland lives in the area and decided to join the club.”

As well as all the new inclusions, the club has been boosted by the decision of McGann to stay at the club. The club thought at one stage that he wouldn’t return this season. “He’s a superstar player and real coup for the club he has decided to stick around,” Wright said. “His heart is at Sunbury Cricket Club and he’s pretty happy just batting and bowling and not worrying about coaching.” Wright said that despite the number of inclusions and coming off the back of a grand final appearance, the club and the players were committed to taking things one week at a time. “Every player has room for improvement,” he said. “We would be looking to play finals, but have not put expectations on ourselves to make the grand final or anything”. In other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla, Riddell, Rupertswood and Bacchus Marsh were the winners.

Allan Walters is returning to football coaching after 10 years, having been named the Sunbury Kangaroos’ women’s coach. Walters, who is president of the Kangaroos, has been a big supporter of the women’s side, attending every game last season. “We had a few people who were interested,” he said. “Watching this year, I sort of got the coaching bug back a bit.” Braiden Wilson, who was part of the coaching panel this year, will be an assistant coach, while there will be a back-to-basics focus on fitness and skills. The Kangaroos, in the their first season, finished third after the home-and-away games before being knocked out in the semi-finals. Walters said injuries had taken a toll. “We had about 30 players and in the end we played our second final with 19,” he said. “Throughout the year, the backline did a really good job and the onballers did a great job, but we crucified our forwards, taking players to fill other roles. “Hopefully, we can put in a few gameplans to kick a few more goals.” Walters replaces Danni Green as coach, with Green to continue as a player with a leadership role. Walters admits he’ll have to brush up his coaching knowledge after such a big break. Before his break, he coached the Kangaroos to two reserves flags and an under-16 premiership. After playing their inaugural season in the AFL Goldfields women’s competition, the Kangaroos could be on the move next season. The club has applied for the team to join the Essendon District Football League competition. After having a combined competition with the Western Region Football League, the EDFL is set to have a stand-alone league next year. Walters said the proposed move was based on reducing the amount of travel for games. The Kangaroos, who will start pre-season training on October 19, are looking for new players of any ability. Kyneton, Thunder in a tie Kyneton and East Sunbury played out a thrilling tie to start the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade season. Electing to bat, the Thunder made 8-203 off its 40 overs with skipper Jessy Carroll top scoring with 41. Kyneton came close to overtaking the Thunder’s score, but fell short, also making 8-203. Nathan Penticoss took three wickets for the Thunder. Macedon lost to Wallan, despite Daniel Trotta making his first century. Macedon made 9-211 on the back of Trotta’s innings, but the Magpies chased down the total with eight balls to spare.

After not winning a match last season, Ashfield has started the new season on a winning note, its bowlers restricting Riddell to just 76. There was a couple of hiccups in the chase, but Ashfield got the job done, making 7-77. Competition newcomer Eynesbury beat Bacchus Marsh. The Eagles made 7-214, with all the top order contributing, before restricting the Bulls to 7-177. St Anthonys defeated Gisborne. By Tara Murray Sunbury suffered a narrow loss in the opening round of Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Playing Glenroy at Glenroy, Sunbury gave up a half-time lead of 11 to go down 81 (164)-75 (4). For Sunbury, Marc Bullows, in his debut as a skipper in the top side, won 21-11 and Elise Cowan’s rink won 20-19. The rink led by Carla Krizanic, now rated the No.1 female bowler in Australia, lost 25-22, while Mark Cowan’s rink was thumped 26-12. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said Glenroy would be one of the teams to beat this season, having recruited well. “It’s only round one and it’s a mountain not a sprint,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll play finals at the end of the year. We led at half-time, but they ran over the top of us. We were missing the two Brads [Willoughby and Janner] and Mark’s rink had two debutantes.” Cowan said they had added a few players, including a few younger recruits. Among those

joining up have been members of the Morison family, which travels from Cranbourne to play. Lachlan Morison recently won silver at the Australian Under 18 Championships as part of the Victorian team that included another Sunbury player, Ethan Higgins. Lachlan’s sister Tayla, is also part of the Victorian set-up, with parents also joining the club. The influence of Cowan, who is also coach of the Victorian under-18s, is one of the reasons young players are coming to the club. Adding to the his Victorian role, Cowan has taken over the coaching reins at Sunbury. The long-time player, skip and committee member decided the time was right for him to step into the role. No longer coaching full time with Bowls Australia, he wants to pass on his knowledge and experience to the Sunbury bowlers. “I want to keep Sunbury at the forefront of bowls in Melbourne,” he said. Overall, it was a poor day for Sunbury with just one of its six sides winning. Sunbury’s top side will this week face Altona (2) at home.

Everest reaches a new peak By Alistair Kennedy Ford Everest is a big, rugged 4WD / SUV that’s been around in other countries since 2003 but didn’t arrive in Australia until the release of the third generation model in late 2015. Although it’s fully imported from Thailand it is an important model for Ford Australia as the company moves away from vehicle production while retaining local employment by providing technical input through its research and development investment. Although the arrival of Ford Everest almost dove-tailed with the departure of the popular Territory, the two vehicles are quite different. Everest is a serious off-roader that’s built on the same platform as the company’s Ranger ute, while the locally-produced Territory was a typical urban family wagon based on the Falcon. Everest, as the name suggests, is big. At just under five metres long and over two metres wide it takes up a fair bit of road space. It has a versatile and spacious cabin capable of carrying up to seven occupants and gear in relative comfort. Our Everest road test vehicle was the entry-level Ambiente AWD. It comes with 17-inch alloy wheels which tend to look a bit puny inside the large wheel arches designed to cater for the 20-inchers of the top-spec Titanium. The big and bold chromed trapezoidal radiator grille is flanked by the latest in integrated projector headlamp/daytime running light set-ups that improves visibility to approaching drivers in poor weather conditions. At the rear there are sculpted tail lamps with integrated LED lighting. The higher specced Trend and Titanium models also get running boards.

Everest is available in three variants, Ambiente, Trend and Titanium spanning a price range from $47,990 to $74,701. The entry-level Ambiente has five seats with a pair of third-row seats available for an additional $1000. Trend and Titanium models have seven seats. Ambiente and Trend come with either rearor four-wheel drive. All Everest models are powered by Ford’s 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel Duratorq engine as used in the Ranger. Towing capacity of up to 3000kg is offered if the trailer is braked. It’s not the quietest diesel engine we’ve

encountered but shouldn’t be an issue with a vehicle of this sort. The only gearbox is a six-speed automatic. All Everest models employ an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for infotainment system display and control together with a 4.2-inch colour instrumentation screen for driving data. We split our fuel consumption readings between the on-road and off-road segments of our week-long road test. On the suburban motorway component we logged an impressive 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. But the beast devoured anything up to 16 litres of diesel per 100 prowling around town.
