Crusade to keep school Kyneton residents are stepping up a campaign for the former Kyneton Primary School site to be run by the community. Community members have formed a reference group and are conducting their own meetings about the site’s future ahead of the council’s planned consultation process. Kyneton resident of 27 years Rob Bakes said residents wanted to ensure the government knew what the community wanted when deciding on the future of the Baynton Street property. “It’s people in communities who really know what the community needs,” Mr Bakes said. He said the new Kyneton Town Square Reference Group, “represents a wide and diverse range of community groups and individuals”. The group includes representatives from Kyneton Connections, Kyneton Community Learning Centre, U3A, Kyneton Men’s Shed, and the Lions Club of Kyneton. Mr Bakes said meetings are “completely open” to anyone interested, and Macedon Ranges councillors were among the crowd at the first four gatherings. Two other local groups, Kyneton Town Hub and Kyneton Transition Hub, are also running Dare to Dream discussions with residents to establish what locals want to happen with the site and to strengthen and inform the council’s formal consultation process. Mr Bakes said the community’s general desire was the “area being kept in public ownership, primarily for public use”.
He said the reference group was pushing for “strong democratic control of the precinct by the Kyneton community”, just as the Kyneton Show and Kyneton Football Club are run. Kyneton Town Square Reference Group is also considering the future of public land and buildings in Kyneton more broadly than just the former school site. Mr Bakes has written to the council to ask it to consider “long-term planning to develop a concept plan for the whole central area” of Kyneton CBD.

Last month the state government announced funding for a master plan and community consultation process to determine the former primary school site’s future, to be carried out by Macedon Ranges council. The state is contributing $55,000 to the process, and the council $10,000 in funds and $15,000 of in-kind support. When the master plan was announced mayor Jennifer Anderson encouraged “everyone to consider all possible uses for the site”. “Council has committed to investigating the site as a community space,” Cr Anderson said. However, Mr Bakes said there was skepticism about what the consultation process would involve and achieve. Last week the council appointed consultants Ethos Urban for the project. Consultation should begin soon and the draft master plan is expected to be released for comment early next year.

Ranges drift slowly into spring Spring has sprung a very cold snap in the Macedon Ranges. Instead of sunshine, the first week of the season brought several days of snowfall. Temperatures were at freezing point and snow on Mount Macedon created a spectacular, yet dangerous, winter wonderland. Emergency services were forced to close Mount Macedon’s Cameron Drive and Lionshead and Barringo roads in the interest of safety last Tuesday. Last week snow also fell in Woodend, Trentham, Springhill, Kyneton, Edgecombe, Hesket, Lancefield, Kilmore, Macedon and Riddells Creek. Serena Seyfort

Gun amnesty hits the bullseye By Serena Seyfort More than 260 firearms have been surrendered in Melbourne’s north-west in the first two months of a firearms amnesty. Since the National Firearms Amnesty started on July 1, Victorians have turned in 2150 rifles, shotguns and handguns, on top of a number of bladed weapons, imitation firearms and ammunition. Melbourne’s north-west, stretching from the CBD out to Whittlesea, accounts for 269 of those firearms. Sunbury Firearm Supplies licensee holder Grant Coppinger said the shop had collected
“probably a dozen [firearms] a week since the amnesty started”. Mr Coppinger said he wasn’t surprised by the number of guns being turned in, with most being “old farm guns” that had likely been inherited. “There are probably still a lot more out there,” Mr Coppinger said. Victoria Police licensing and regulation division superintendent Paul Millett said that so far, Victoria’s amnesty results were the most pleasing in a decade. “These results are very encouraging,” he said. “This is more than 2000 firearms that would otherwise be at great risk of ending up in the
wrong hands.” Superintendent Millett is encouraging people to continue to surrender unregistered firearms in the last month of the amnesty. Firearms, weapons and ammunition can be surrendered to a licensed firearms dealer without fear of prosecution until September 30. Mr Coppinger said handing in firearms was a simple process, with no questions asked. “It’s a complete amnesty,” he said. “So it’s pretty much just walk in, place a gun on the counter and walk out.” To find a nearby licensed firearms dealer, visit www.firearmsamnesty.ag.gov.au

Tributes are flowing for brave seven-year-old Riddells Creek girl Lily De Haas. The community has paid homage to Lily on social media since she died in hospital on August 30 after battling a brain tumor. Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL) football and netball teams wore pink armbands, socks and shoelaces for their games on September 2 and 3 as a show of respect for Lily and her family. The RDFNL also had a minute of silence before the B-grade final then released two pink balloons into the sky. Riddells Creek Junior Mixed Basketball Association held several fundraisers and started a crowdfunding campaign, raising more than $61,000 for the family since Lily was diagnosed earlier this year. Lily’s mum Simone has thanked the community for its support. “Our hearts are forever broken over the loss of Lily, our family will never be the same. However, when we see how Lily’s fight against cancer touched so many people, it is comforting to know that her strength and courage that she displayed throughout her journey, will continue to inspire others,” she said. “The love and support that our family has received has been nothing short of amazing … We are so fortunate to live in a community that is not only a beautiful place, but surrounded by the best people in the world.”

campaign amid fears the “food and drink” premises will be a fast food chain, claiming it would be “out of character” for Woodend. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary and Woodend resident Christine
Pruneau told Star Weekly that feedback she had had from the community was against the addition of a “convenience restaurant”. “It has a suburban stigma,” Ms Pruneau said. “People aren’t supportive of the chain thing out here.” She said it would disadvantage local businesses and didn’t align with the rural feel. It is the second time in two years that residents have rallied against plans for a service station at the Woodend site. Ms Pruneau said residents had previously
been worried about the traffic a service station would generate at Woodend’s already congested access point and pedestrian safety. In May 2015, councillors rejected a proposal for a service station against officers’ advice. The 2015 applicant – food and petrol giant Coles Express – took the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which resolved to support the council’s decision to reject the plans. The council has not advised when the new application will be addressed.

Ms Bell said the design of the park, in line with the natural environment, was attracting more than just skaters to the area. “Because it’s so beautiful to be in and around lots of parents are going as well,” she said. But the skaters are definitely making the most of the long-awaited park. “It’s crazy busy,” Ms Bell said. “During the day it’s full of men with younger children and after school it’s all primary and secondary students. “And on the weekend it’s full of out-of-towners.” Macedon Ranges council will host the park’s official opening from 10am-2pm on Saturday, September 23. Lancefield residents are celebrating the opening of a skate park – 20 years after the idea was rolled out. The dream for a skate park in Lancefield was started by a youth group in the late 1990s. The group’s members washed cars to raise $11,000 for the park’s development. After about 20 years of planning and negotiating, a skatepark has been constructed on the corner of Chauncey Street and Park Lane. Skate park committee president Amy Bell, who has been dedicated to the project since becoming a Lancefield resident in 2011, said she was “really happy” with what had been achieved. “It looks amazing,” Ms Bell said. “It’s highly functional but designed for all user groups.” Located in the megafauna site of Lancefield Park, the ramps have been designed to sit below ground-height to mimic a swamp. A Sunbury man is speeding towards success in the world of motorsport. Travis Jones partnered with former V8 Supercar racer Adam Macrow last month to win the flag in a 40-lap endurance race at Phillip Island. The first place finish is a step up from his first race in this year’s Victorian Hyundai Excel Racing series, in which he placed fifth. Jones said the victory was “brilliant”. He’s eagerly preparing for the series’ final meetings, to be raced in October and December. Jones started racing go-karts as a hobby in 1997. He has progressed through the racing scene to superkarts and now cars.
He wants to take his racing career to an even higher level. “My dream is to race at Bathurst – in any car race,” he said. The Sunbury resident of 29 years is backed by several local businesses, including Sunbury Collision Centre, Sacco Coffee and Relysh Bistro. MY PLACE Rob McIntyre has always called Bolinda home. He’s been involved in local sport in just about every way possible. He chats with Serena Seyfort.
I’ve lived here all my life. My family’s been in the Bolinda area since 1851, when my great, great-grandfather came from Tasmania, so we’ve got a long history of being in the area. All my family went to school at Bolinda Primary School and then to Salesian College in Sunbury. Tell us about your involvement with the local community. I’ve played cricket and football at Romsey and been involved on committees there for a long time. I have coached football and cricket there – I’ve done pretty much the whole lot. I’m president of Romsey Sporting Association, a group that manages the Romsey sporting facilities on behalf of the council, and I’m president of the Gisborne Cricket Association at the moment. I’ve been on the executive there for about 10 years. I’m also vice-president of the Central Highlands Region for cricket and a board member with the Victorian Country Cricket League, as well as a selector for the Victorian state country team. And when I was a carpenter for 40 years, I worked at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton for five years as a maintenance worker. What do you like about the area? Probably the history more than anything. And being involved with sport, meeting a lot
of new friends through sport and also through community groups. It’s a friendly atmosphere, especially around the Romsey area. Do you have a favourite local place? I’d have to say the Romsey Recreation Reserve because I’ve spent so much time working up there in a voluntary capacity over the years. If you change anything about the area, what would it be? I’d go back to 1956 and stop the removal of the rail line from Clarkefield to Lancefield. If we still had a rail line, it would certainly open up the area and give people an opportunity for better public transport. It was more of a goods service, but now it would certainly be a big boom as transport for a fast-growing area. Have you noticed much change in your 57 years in the Macedon Ranges? It’s just amazing how quickly the area’s changed. It used to be big farming communities and now most farms have all been sold off and cut up. There are a lot of new people moving to the area. And it’s great to get these new people come in with all their different ideas and working and getting involved in the community. But it would be good to see a bit more community involvement from people moving from Melbourne. It’s getting harder and harder to find volunteers for any organisations these days.

A Sunbury woman has lost her licence after allegedly driving while more than two times over the legal alcohol limit with a child in her car. Police pulled the 49-year-old woman over on Mitchells Lane last week after being alerted to her driving behaviour by a member of the public. A breath test showed the woman to have a blood alcohol concentration of 0.125. She is expected to be charged on summons.

A star in the making A young performer from Sunbury is tearing up the stage in the musical theatre game. Thirteen-year-old Jackson Rudge is preparing for his role in the dance theatre production Self as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival later this month. “I’m really excited to work with Michael Ralph [the director] and all the dancers,” Jackson said. Self, is a journey into an artist’s psyche Self expressed through choreography and music, Jackson will play “the young artist”. The Salesian College student practises every day after school at Flash Dance Performing Arts in Sunbury.
He has been a keen dancer since he was four years old. After watching his cousin perform, Jackson was inspired to get into dancing. “I thought I’d try and I loved it,” he said. Self won’t be his first time in front of a big audience. He appeared in Melbourne productions of Les Misérables in 2014 and The Sound of Music last year. “My goal is to stay dancing and performing and go overseas with it,” he said. SPORT Hard yakka lands Lancefield a grand final berth Lancefield’s solid work of the past few years has been rewarded with a Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final spot. The Tigers won through to this Sunday’s decider with a strong win against Melton Centrals. Tigers coach Alan Watson said it was the club’s first A-grade grand final since 2004. “It feels a bit strange,” he said. “We haven’t been there before, let alone in many finals. “It’s a reflection of reward for effort the girls have had throughout the year. “A lot of work has been done behind the scenes to get to this stage. It hasn’t been an overnight sort of thing – we’ve just been building.” Saturday’s preliminary final win was set up in the second quarter. Centrals led by two goals at quarter-time, but an 18-8 second quarter in favour of Lancefield turned the game on its head. The teams went
goal for goal in the second half, with the Tigers eventually winning 55-46. Watson said his players came out a bit nervous, but once they settled they were able to work themselves into the game. “The second quarter was absolutely brilliant,” he said. “We won the last half by one. It was an even second half. “I made a few moves in the second quarter and I think it impacted the game. “Maddi Gay went into wing defence and I thought she shut the wing attack down and they lost the feed into the circle. We were fortunate enough to have her for a half before she had to head to work. Ash Hyatt came on and took over where she left off. “Paula Broadstock went into centre, drove strongly down court … Anica [Scherer] went into goal defence and I thought she was outstanding. Everything worked.”
Watson said the result was due to a really good team performance. He said the attacking end of Courtney Annett (35 goals), Tahnysha Salanoa (22 goals) and Taylah Watson worked really well together, while Olivia Peels was strong in defence. The Tigers will play red-hot favourite Romsey in the grand final. The Redbacks won the semi-final between the two sides 50-36. Watson said his players needed to be consistent for four quarters if they were to have a chance of snatching the premiership. “We had ebbs and flows in that game,” he said of the semi-final defeat. “Every match is different and previously we had really close games. We’re going in as the underdogs and have nothing to lose. “We just need to play four quarters of pressure netball.” Tara Murray
Sharks grab second shot By Tara Murray Rupertswood will get another shot at Macedon in the Riddell District Football League, and this time a premiership is on the line. The Sharks, who lost to the Cats in the opening round of the finals, have since defeated Riddell and Diggers Rest to win through to their first senior RDFL grand final. On Saturday, the Sharks had their best four-quarter performance of the finals against Diggers Rest, which was hoping to keep its dreams of back-to-back premierships alive. The Sharks took the game in the second half, kicking six goals to win 10.7 (67)-5.12 (42). Sharks coach Kevin Fitzgerald said his side deserved to be through to a grand final. “It’s reward for effort,” he said. “We’ve played pretty good football for the last couple of weeks. It turns out the best two sides of the regular season are through to the grand final.” The Sharks got their wish of a dry day, which suited their game plan more on the big ground. Fitzgerald thought that they could run over the top of the Burras and he was correct. “The conditions were perfect for footy,” he said. “We spoke about keeping pressure on them for long enough … we were able to get them and it was a really good job. I was really happy with our work rate.” The game was still on the line at three-quarter time, before the Sharks kicked the first four goals of the last quarter to put the game out of reach. Two of those goals came from Brett Chambers who was moved forward. Fitzgerald said they felt they had to find another avenue to goal. “I thought we controlled the contest and didn’t get reward for it. We had a lot of the ball but weren’t able to convert. “We moved Brett forward and he was able to do what we needed … he’s a quality player.” Fitzgerald said Brent Swallow, Lachlan Muir, Nash Egan, Sean Hetherington and Damon Cerini were the side’s best. He also made mention of Aden Muir, who has stood strong in the ruck the last two weeks in the absence of Dean Putt, and Dylan Podolczak. Fitzgerald thought Podolczak’s season was over after breaking his hand last week. “He had an operation on Wednesday and had a plate put on the bone,” he said. “He was told if he could stand the pain he could play. He’s mentally tough … You can’t measure the intangibles like that.” Fitzgerald said besides some sore bodies, they

Roos fall just short Sunbury Kangaroos may not have come away with the AFL Goldfields’ Riddell Youth Girls premiership, but they were winners before they even took to the field. The Kangaroos exceeded all expectations in their first season and faced off against the undefeated Gisborne Blue side in the grand final on Sunday. The Kangaroos pushed the Bulldogs all day and almost pulled off an upset win, but fell just short, losing 4.6 (30)-4.1 (25). Kangaroos’ junior president Jacob Bennett said making the grand final alone was a massive result. “We’re very proud of these girls,” he said. “We had only three players who had played football before and we had three 12-year-olds and the rest under-15s and under-18s. We played a side which were all under-18 players “The girls believed in themselves and were massive underdogs. “If the game had gone for three minutes longer, I think we would have got the win.” Gemma McGann kicked two goals for the Kangaroos. Bennett said they ended up with 22 players for the season, a lot more than what they thought they would get. “[We thought] If we got 12 to 13 kids we’d put in a team and have a bit of fun. “We ended up with 22 girls and you can see what we’ve put out there on the field. We’ve got a pathway for female football in the club from under-18s to senior football. “The senior team made finals and had the league best and fairest winner and the coach of the year.” Bennett said they had players of all ages who had shown they had what it takes. Their best player on Sunday was 13-year-old Abbey McDonald. “She’s been playing two games of football on a Sunday, still playing under-14s. She could play senior football, but you need to be at least 16.” Bennett said they were hoping to expand the girl’s program next season to include an under-15 side. “We want to have an under-15 team to allow the younger girls a bit more time to develop with players their own ages.” Tara Murray

Cooke crowns return to footy with a best and fairest A refound love of football for Macedon’s Jason Cooke has helped him take out the Riddell District Football League’s top honour. A talented junior with the Sunbury Lions, Cooke was part of the Calder Cannons before injuries took a toll. He played one season at Pascoe Vale before giving up the sport. He even spent six months playing soccer. A few mates and a persistent Macedon president Terry Kernan persuaded Cooke to play for the Cats at the start of the 2015 season. As the Cats have built and are now in the grand final this year, Cooke’s game has continued to go to new levels. On Wednesday night he claimed the RDFL’s Bowen Medal for the league’s best and fairest. It was a low scoring count that had the crowd captivated, with several in the mix heading into the final rounds. Cooke won the medal on 16 votes, one clear of Sunbury Kangaroos’ Tierone Cuffe.
It’s the second time Cuffe, who missed three games with injury and played the final rounds with a broken foot, has finished second. The top 11 players were separated by six votes. Cooke said winning the medal was quite overwhelming. “Obviously I had a good year but didn’t expect to win the competition medal, I’m very humbled to win that. “It was a bit nervous, there was a couple of games I didn’t think I played well but I polled, it was quite nervy. “It does help when Matty Dick and Dan Markworth and those boys come back. “Felt like I wasn’t doing too much up in the forward line, just kicking all the goals. It was a great team effort and I couldn’t do it without the boys.” Cooke’s year corresponded with a move to the forward line. Cooke also claimed the leading goalkicker award after kicking 77 goals during the regular season.
He still spent about a quarter of game time in the midfield. Cats coach Jeff Andrews said if Cooke played forward permanently he would have kicked 100 goals for the year. Cooke said the decision to play with the Cats saved his football career. A premiership in a week’s time would be icing on the cake. “It’s been an unbelievable three years and I’ve enjoyed every single minute and I’ve got a passion for footy again. “It has been a long time between drinks for Macedon … I haven’t played in a grand final in six or seven years. “It’s great to be in the grand final and we have confidence in how we are going. Wise heads win the day By Tara Murray It was a couple of experienced campaigners who rose to the top in the Riddell District Netball League Ryan Medal on Wednesday night. Diggers Rest playing coach Amy Carroll and Melton Centrals’ gun shooter Bec Morabito were named joint winners after an exciting count. The two finished on 21 votes, three votes clear of last year’s winner Macedon’s Ciara Stewart. It’s the third straight year that the top award has been taken out by players aged 30 or above. This year’s top three placegetters are all mothers. Carroll and Morabito joked they played so well because they were enjoying the time away from kids. Both were shocked to win the medal. It’s the third time Morabito has won the medal. She previously won it in 2009 and 2011 and is the only player to win it more than once. “I think the wise heads win and it’s about the smarts which we both have,” she said.
“It’s a real honour and I put it completely down to my teammates, I can only do so much by myself and I’ve been lucky to be in really good teams. “This a complete surprise, I didn’t give myself a half a chance.” Morabito said making the award more special was that her family was involved at Centrals as well. Her dad, Randy Pereira is the A-grade coach while her sister Taylor-Jane Pereira is making her way through the ranks. Carroll said winning the medal, named after Diggers Rest legend Janine Ryan, was special. Carroll also took out the Western Water player of the year, as voted by the coaches. “It’s really exciting and I didn’t actually think I would be in the mix this year,” she said. “I thought last year I would have been and got runners-up. Gisborne Blue held strong in the dying minutes to hold off Sunbury Kangaroos in the AFL Goldfields’ Riddell Youth Girls grand final on Sunday. Undefeated entering the grand final, the Bulldogs had all the pressure on them entering the game. It was an arm wrestle all day, with the Bulldogs holding on to win, 4.6 (30)-4.1 (25). Gisborne’s Darren Mitchell said an undefeated season was never thought of pre-season. He said the grand final was too close for comfort as the Kangaroos threw everything at them. “Grand finals are a different game and Sunbury had nothing to lose,” he said. “The girls were nervous, but confident they could get it done. “They kicked with the wind in the first quarter and led by one point at quarter-time until we got ahead by 14 points at half-time “It was a dire struggle in the second half … we managed to hold on. “Another five minutes may have been a different story.” The premiership comes after making the preliminary final match the past two seasons. Loree Newton was awarded the best on ground medal by the umpires. Newton, in her first season at the Bulldogs after playing with Kyneton, dominated the midfield. Abbi Bolt kicked two goals for the Bulldogs, while league best and fairest winner Molly Warburton was another standout. Mitchell said the win wouldn’t have happened without the support of the coaches and parents. “We had plenty of support at the grand final with supporters and players from Gisborne white and the senior team coming up. United loses, survives Sunbury United has avoided relegation for the first time in three seasons with a ninth-placed finish in FFV state league 3 north-west. United went from state league 1 to state league 3 in consecutive drops in past seasons and for much of this season was in the relegation zone and facing another drop. Entering the final round, United sat ninth, three points and goal percentage ahead of 10th-placed Fawkner and a spot in a relegation play-off game. Although seven goals clear on goal difference, United was aware anything could happen in the final round. Despite a loss on Saturday to second bottom side Melbourne University, United remained in ninth place.
United had to do the chasing all day after conceding an early goal. Twice United levelled the scores, before a goal to Melbourne University in the 88th minute sealed its win. Joseph Cavoli and Jayden Mercieca were the goalscorers for United. In state league 5 west, Gisborne finished its season with a 6-0 smashing of Maidstone United. Callan Haynes scored four goals and Daniel Jones chipped in with the other two. Kyneton District’s season came to an end with a 2-0 loss to Moonee Valley Knights. Lions pay price for second slip By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions will have to make the Ballarat Netball League grand final the hard way after a shock semi-final loss to North Ballarat City. A poor second quarter proved to be the Lions’ undoing. After scoring the first four goals of the second quarter to open up a six-goal lead, the Lions were out-scored 19-4 for the rest of the quarter to trail 29-20 at half-time. The Lions managed to level the scores early in the third quarter but another lapse meant they were five goals down at the last change. They hit the front in the last quarter, for most of which the two teams went goal for goal. At the final siren City was in front, winning 55-54. Lions coach Adam Boldiston said the result would be a wake up call for his side, which will have to win a preliminary final against Redan on Saturday. The loss was the Lions’ first of the year. “You’ve never going to win a game of netball when you only play well for 35 of the 60 minutes,” Boldiston said.
“We won three quarters by 10 goals, but lost one quarter by 11 goals and that’s the difference. “I don’t think the girls stuck to the task. Maybe we got complacent at times.” Despite being bitterly disappointed, Boldiston said there were positives that could be taken from the loss. He said changes he made at half-time worked and got them back into the game. “We shot 34 goals for the second half, which is good going,” he said. “We showed a great fight back.” Goal shooter Chloe Curran was named the Lions’ best. She shot 49 goals from 53 attempts. Tarryn Munro and Ashleigh Hardy were the Lions other standouts. It wasn’t all bad news for the Lions, with their C and D-grade sides winning through to grand finals. The C-grade side came from behind to force overtime against Lake Wendouree before winning 39-36. The D-grade side defeated East Point, 36-32 in their semi-final. The Lions’ B-grade team is through to a preliminary final.

Gisborne bounces back
Kangas chase new coach

Sunbury Kangaroos are on the hunt for a new senior football coach. The Kangaroos, who finished sixth this year, decided earlier this week that they would advertise the role for next season. Kangaroos’ president Allan Walters said the committee voted in favour of advertising the role and seeing what coaches were out there. This year’s coach Jarrod Dixon told Star Weekly that he would not reapply for the job. Dixon, who returned to the club last year, coached the senior side to seventh and sixth in his two seasons in charge. The Kangaroos were knocked out by Diggers Rest in the opening round of the Riddell District Football League finals this year. The Kangaroos are also looking for an under-18.5 and women’s coach for next season. The club is looking for coaches with solid knowledge of all areas of the game as well as having the drive and enthusiasm to develop the playing group. Applications must have a minimum current level one coaching accreditation, or be looking to obtain that level of accreditation. Gisborne stepped up another level as it kept its Bendigo Netball League premiership hopes alive. After a first-up finals loss to Golden Square last week, the Bulldogs were on their last chance against Kangaroo Flat. They responded and led from start to finish in the 51-38 win. Bulldogs coach Guy Keane said the match was closer than what the scoreboard reflected. “We were up all game and put ourselves in a winning position, but you never know in finals,” he said. “We had to keep working and make sure we converted our centre passes and made the most of the turnovers.” Keane said the side had a much better work rate than it did in the first week of the finals. He said defensively the team was strong across the whole court, all game. “We put Kangaroo Flat under pressure all day and when we had the ball were able to be patient. “At times we didn’t flow in attack, but we kept patient and our work around the edge of the circle was the difference.” Ella Bertacchini again stood out in goals for the Bulldogs with not just her shooting, but also her defence. At the other end of the court, Holly Burnip stood strong. The Bulldogs now face Golden Square in the preliminary final, after they lost to Sandhurst 61-52 in their semi-final. Sandhurst awaits the winner in the grand final. “Hopefully we learnt a lot from the qualifying final and we’ll be looking to make sure we play with a higher work rate in both attack and defence,” Keane said.
