Path gets green light By Serena Seyfort A three-year campaign for a safer cycling and pedestrian crossing between Sunbury and Diggers Rest has been realised. The state government will fund a $1.1 million 500-metre shared path on the western side of Vineyard Road and the Calder Freeway overpass. Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bicycle Users Group member Hector Bugeja said the group had been calling for this “key bit of infrastructure” to be fixed for three years. “There’s huge development going on all around there but you can’t cross the freeway,” Mr Bugeja said. “Why build a pathway that then stops before the bridge?” The VicRoads-managed path currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the Calder Freeway overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road. Mr Bugeja said the first time he crossed the overpass he didn’t feel comfortable taking the same route home. “I was appalled, the trucks were so close to us,” he said. Mr Bugeja said the death of a cyclist on Vineyard Road the next day had reinforced the need for better cycling safety and “shocked [him] into action”. The group spokesperson and Sunbury resident said the new connecting path would be “a great start” to improving Sunbury’s cycling infrastructure. “I reckon this is the start of the start,” Mr Bugeja said. “There is a need for council to get serious about provision of bike markings on roads, and filling the various gaps in our current bike network.” Work on the path is expected to begin early next year.

Golden days of music Pupils at Sunbury’s Red Rock Christian College are eagerly rehearsing for the school’s first musical. The entire school is working towards the curtain raising on More Than Gold later this month. Teacher Miss Barclay, who has co-ordinated rehearsals, said she had “loved seeing kids try something new, and seeing many students realise gifts they didn’t know they had”. The musical features three stories inspired by a search for gold, taken from pages of the Scripture. There will be a matinee and an evening show on Friday, September 15, at Gisborne Church of Christ, 31 Saunders Road, New Gisborne. Tickets are $5 for an adult and $2 for under 18s. Aero club flying high after award By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges’ aero club is soaring above the rest of the nation. Kyneton Aero Club (KAC) has been named the 2017 Aero Club of the Year, selected from nominees across the country. “Kyneton Aero Club epitomises everything an aero club should be,” according to the judges of the national Wings Awards. The annual awards are judged by members of the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Australian Flying magazine. KAC vice president Warren Canning said the club was “absolutely thrilled” with the accolade.

“It’s very much recognising all of the community contribution the aero club makes and also the aero club’s contribution to airmanship and aviation safety,” Mr Canning said. The club is mainly used for recreational flying and flight training but also acts as a firebase during bushfire season. In emergencies the club assists with refueling, water pick-up, crew rotation, rest facilities and command and communication. KAC members also volunteer with local and national organisations year-round. “We regularly host local Scout groups for their air badge,” Mr Canning said.

“We give them theory lessons and practical experience in an aircraft … at the aero club’s cost.” The club holds its Gourmet Hot Dog ‘fly-in’, on the first Saturday of each month which involves pilots flying in to buy hotdogs and network with fellow aviators while raising money for the Neuroscience Foundation. The aero club’s annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser has contributed $35,000 to the Cancer Council over the past eight years. KAC also supports the FunFlight charity and the Air Force Cadets. The club will host a community open day in November to celebrate the award.

CFA roadshow working hard for inclusion

Emergency Management Victoria has put $17,000 towards bolstering LGBTIQ+ inclusion in the Country Fire Association. Ambassadors from the CFA’s LGBTIQ+ support group CFA Pride will embark on a roadshow to provide staff, management teams and volunteers from all CFA regions across the state with information and training on LGBTIQ+ inclusion. The funding also secures resources for CFA Pride’s participation in LGBTIQ+ pride events such as Daylesford’s Chillout Festival in March. CFA inclusion and fairness assistant chief officer Steve Smith said the grant was fantastic news for the CFA. “My hope is this is only the beginning and we continue working to ensure that the CFA is truly inclusive,” Mr Smith said. CFA Pride ambassador Russell Wright said the CFA had not had particular issues with exclusion, but was committed to the values of fairness and inclusion. “The CFA has always had an appearance of being a men’s club and a ‘blokey’ organisation, and this is trying to change that image,” Mr Wright said. “The funding cements the commitment of CFA management to continue to work towards a more fair and inclusive organisation for everyone.” The district roadshow will take place in the coming months. An itinerary will be released soon.

Ambitious filmographer Jock Turner took out a visual arts award. The 20-year-old Gisborne resident developed an interest in film during the time he spent acting as a teenager. Macedon Ranges young people and their achievements and contributions to the community were celebrated at Kyneton Town Hall last week. The 2017 Macedon Ranges Youth Awards were presented to 14 winners. More than 150 individuals aged 12 to 25 and 150 groups were nominated. Child care ace honoured One of the best childcare workers in Victoria lives and works in Romsey. Julie Galea has been named a regional winner in the 2017 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards, placing her in the running to be a national finalist. Ms Galea was nominated for the award by parents of the children she cares for in her own home. The family day care educator of 10 years said she was “stoked” to receive the award. “I’m very humbled,” she said.

Cash pumped into springs tourism By Serena Seyfort The “poor” condition of the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges mineral springs is finally being addressed. The state government is putting $240,000 from the Regional Tourism and Infrastructure Fund towards developing a Mineral Springs Feasibility, Business Case and Master Plan Project to boost local tourism. Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional

Tourism Board chair Noel Harvey said the mineral springs had been in need of work “for a long, long time”. “There are lots of issues with the springs right across the region,” Mr Harvey said. He said poor infrastructure and its maintenance meant visitor experiences were lacking. “We get a lot of feedback from people saying how disappointed they are,” he said. “The signage is poor, information is poor, access is

poor and often the pumps don’t work.” Mr Harvey said the project was the chance to turn what was now “a pretty ordinary experience” into a special destination. “We recognise that the mineral springs and

the mineral water generally is the one point of difference that our region has that nowhere else in Australia has,” he said. “We have a very unique opportunity to improve the visitor experience within the natural environment.” Announcing the funding, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said upgrades would improve the potential for local businesses to prosper and would create a “beautiful outdoor space” for the local community to enjoy.

Human nature inspires The creations of two Sunbury artists – also winners of Hume council’s 2016 Arts Awards – are on show in Craigieburn. Exhibitions by Bonnie Hanlon and Shay Downer are both inspired by an intimate perspective of human experience and feature together in the Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery. Hanlon’s exhibition Chemical Chance, highlights humans’ tiny but significant place in the universe through an intricate collection of works made of watercolour and cotton thread. “A lot of my work is to do with the connections that we share between each other and the world around us,” Hanlon said. The young artist graduated from art school in 2008 and currently works in framing and art supply retail while practising as an artist. Hanlon has had a handful of group and solo exhibitions over the past decade, with several at Kyneton’s Stockroom. She said she was excited for her first exhibition in Hume. “It’s really nice to be involved in a council

show and to be involved with your community,” Hanlon said. Shay Downer’s exhibition Visible Mending features charcoal drawings that reflect upon the human condition and strive to evoke an emotional reaction. The artist said she hoped her work could convey the importance of compassion and the healing power of human connection in a world that seemed increasingly hostile and divided. What’s your connection with the Macedon Ranges? I moved to Woodend from Brunswick East in 2011 because a lot of my artistic friends had moved here. How are you involved in the local community? I run a monthly poetry reading called Chamber Poets. Some of the best poets in Victoria have featured there. I started the group because I wanted to get in touch with the creative people in the area. I thought, what better way than to start a poetry reading? It was started in a cafe which was also an art gallery. And I’m in a local band called Black Forest Smoke. I play ukulele and write the lyrics. We’re the resident band at the monthly Chamber Poet meetings. I also teach creative writing at Woodend Neighbourhood House on Monday nights.

From 27 August, we’re updating train timetables and adding 10 new peak services each week on the Sunbury Line.

What do you like about the area? I just love being with so many different creative people in a beautiful part of the world. I’ve met lots and lots of creative people here – painters, sculptors, actors, musicians. I like the trees and kangaroos and some of the magical places here. I love Straws Lane … you bring a visitor, you tell them a ghostly story about Hanging Rock and then you park the car and it rolls back up the

Has much of your writing and your poetry been inspired by the local area and the local community? One of the things I love doing is writing haikus. I’m the Victorian representative of the

Australian Haiku Society. I go to a lot of scenic spots in the local area and sit around and walk around and write haiku about what I observe. I also conduct haiku walks. I get a group of people … we walk around for a couple of hours and write haiku and come back and workshop them. They love the feeling of walking around and writing about what’s happening in front of you right now, because that’s kind of like a creative meditation. We write about the natural landscape and the way you interact with it.

Well-known local osteopath Dr David Fairclough has been treating people with pain and injuries for more than 15 years throughout the Macedon Ranges. SPORT Warburton wraps up stellar year with one more honour Gisborne’s Molly Warburton’s breakout year has continued with the teenager taking out the Riddell Youth Girls best and fairest award last month. In just her second season of football, Warburton was leading the count at the halfway mark when votes were shown to just those at the awards night. Warburton managed to hold on to win the award on 27 votes. The 17-year-old was shocked to be announced the winner. “I thought I had a good year, but didn’t expect to win that,” she said. “It’s a different league from last year and I didn’t know what to expect. There was so many different teams. “It was only halfway through when I saw the leader board, I got excited.” The good season could continue with her side

Gisborne Blue already through to the grand final this Sunday. The Bulldogs are undefeated this season. A win would deliver a second premiership to Warburton this year, having already been part of the Calder Cannons team which won the inaugural girls TAC Cup. Warburton is still training at the Cannons at times during the off season, and is hoping to return to the girls’ program next season. “I love it and I can’t wait to come back,” she said. “It’s a step up from local club football and a lot more intense. Things were a lot stricter and I liked having to take more responsibility and step up. “It was really like a family.” Among the things Warburton had to learn at the Cannons was a new position. Having played in the ruck at Gisborne

because of her leap, she found a new home at half-back. Warburton was selected in Vic Metro’s under-18 for the national championships, as a bottom-age player. She was also picked for the All-Australian team. “I was so shocked to get an invite for Vic Metro,” she said. “We had a little bit of training and showed what you can do, I must have impressed. “I played all three games at the national carnival and I enjoyed it and had a good time.” The Essendon supporter has another 12 months before she can be drafted to the AFLW. In the meantime she plans to go back to the Cannons and continue playing with Gisborne to develop her skills. Tara Murray

Jets’ Big V win a double delight By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets’ women’s side wrote another chapter in what has been a remarkable two years in the Big V competition, claiming the state championship title on Saturday night. After claiming the Big V division 1 title last season in the most dominant fashion, the Jets were thrown a new challenge this year, playing in the state championship division for the first time. The Jets started brilliantly, winning their first 11 games to take their winning streak to 35 games. A few losses came in the second half of the season, but the Jets managed to claim the minor premiership. The real challenge came finals time, and the Jets responded, stepping up their game after a below par start. The Jets fought back against Knox Raiders to claim their semi-final series 2-1, after their worst game of the season in round one. That set up a grand final match up with Bulleen Boomers. The Jets started slowly in game one and trailed by as much as 18 points in the first half but they overran the Boomers, winning 71-65. It set up two chances to take the championship. They only needed one, winning game two 55-54. The Jets are believed to be the first team to claim division 1 and state championship Big V titles in back-to-back seasons. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said it was an incredible result. “It’s really just a credit to a plan this club put in place and the players who have come here to represent this club. “It’s really a credit to them and the hard work they’ve put in. I’m really proud, it was a tough one.” Just one word was needed to describe the Jets’ first half; defence. As both teams struggled to hit their shots, the Jets’ defence ensured they held the Boomers to just five points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second. Kereama said the way they defended, especially in the first half, was the difference in the game. “I’ll credit Bulleen’s defence and persistence for our shooting struggle. We didn’t get much easy. “It was very similar to last week, you continue to stick with the process, continue to take those shots and have confidence that the next one will drop. “It’s the same with Bulleen, I think they were 0-11 at the start of the second half from the three-point line and as soon as they made the first one … You could see the pressure lift off and they’re a tough team to stop.

“We were lucky our defence established themselves from the start of the game and that got us the win for sure.” The Jets held a four- to 10-point lead for most of the first two and a half quarters, before the Boomers started to close the gap. They got within two points on a couple of occasions in the third quarter. Monique Stevens hit eight points in quick succession to steady the Jets. The margin was six points at three-quarter time. Midway through the last quarter, scores were level. While the Boomers levelled the scores, they were never able to hit the front. Two free throws to Courtney Duever with 9.8 seconds left gave the Jets the chance to take back the lead. Duever hit the first free throw, before the Boomers got the rebound off the missed second shot. The Boomers had the chance to win the game through a Jess May shot in the dying seconds, but she missed and the siren sounded while both sides fought for the rebound. Kereama said their leaders stepped up at vital times. “Missing that second free throw that Courtney had, as much as it was a scary

moment, if their coach had the chance to have the time out and set a play up I would have imagined an overtime game.” “On defensive stops we had Chelsea and Orla [O’Reilly] and different players chip in at different times.

“That’s what you want your leaders to do, step up and make big plays when needed.” Duever added another bit of history, claiming her second straight grand final most valuable player award. She scored 20 points and had eight rebounds to go with her 25 points and eight rebounds in game one. “She’s a special player,” Kereama said. “I’m very happy we found each other. The club, coach and player … There’s a good relationship between the three of us.” Josie Stockill was the other player in double figures for the Jets, with 16 points. Saving the best ‘til last By Tara Murray Romsey is becoming the last quarter specialists, with a second straight dominant final quarter earning the Redbacks a Riddell District Netball League grand final spot. The Redbacks started slowly against Lancefield on Saturday, but began to find their groove after about five minutes. The Redbacks hit the front in the first quarter and stayed there for the rest of the game. For much of the middle two quarters the margin remained between six to eight goals. The Tigers got the jump early in the last quarter, reducing the margin to four goals but that was as close as they got, and the Redbacks stormed home to win 50-36, with a 15-7 goal last quarter. Redbacks coach Lena Way said her side, which has lost just one game for the season, deserved to be in the grand final. “Especially after two games like that, showing a lot of resolve after being down in the game and to produce last quarters like that.” Way, who was ready to take the court if needed despite not playing for several weeks, said having a second slow start in as many matches was something they would work on, but was thrilled with how the team responded. “I think we still have some things to work on but it’s really encouraging going into a grand final with a win like that,” she said. “The last three times we’ve played Lancefield we’ve won by one, one and two goals, so to have a win by 14 goals, that’s a good indicator for me. “We’ve been talking a lot about momentum and how we can spiral up the effort and intensity and stay cool under pressure. “To be able to execute like that and continue to turn over the ball and convert goals was really good.” Chelsea Ross, who shot 10 goals, was named the Redbacks’ best. Ross combined with Amelia Brock who shot 40 goals from 48 attempts. Way was full of praise for Ross’ game. “We’ve focused a lot on our attack end at training,” she said. “Chelsea has a really specific game plan and task and she played that really well, she did a great job. “Milly’s just sterling under a ring.” Way said they would have a full squad to choose from in the grand final. “Bron [Bronwyn Blair] will be back for the grand final,” Way said of the shooter who was overseas for Saturday’s game. “Hopefully Dani [Davidson] will be OK, She warmed up OK today and we’ll see how she goes at training the next couple of weeks. “We’ll keep training in between games and keep working on things.” The Redbacks will face the winner of the Lancefield and Melton Central match in the grand final. With wins against both sides Way is confident they can continue the same form that has got them into the grand final. Maddison Gay was the Tigers’ best in the loss to the Redbacks.

Sunbury Lions in control as flag bid builds Sunbury Lions’ grand final hopes remain on track after a solid Ballarat Netball League qualifying final win against Redan on Saturday. Clearly the premiership favourites, the Lions’ focus was getting off to a good start and preventing a shoot-out late in the game. They succeeded – and once in front, were never headed on the way to a 48-41 win. Lions coach Adam Boldiston was happy to get through what he had expected to be a tough match. “We played really well and stood up to the physicality,” he said. “We were up by six goals at quarter-time and were always in control. The previous two times we had slow starts against Redan and it was a real grind. “This time we built across the second and third quarter … we were up by 14 or 15 goals in the last quarter before they got a few junk goals.” Boldiston said defenders Monique Clark and Ashleigh Hardy were strong in defence. He was full of praise for Ruth Smith, who shot 22 goals, one of her highest tallies for the season. “She had a really high work rate,” he said. “She shouldered a lot of the work load and really had a great game. Other teams’ first focus is to shut down [goal shooter] Chloe [Curran] and double team her. Ruth has proven she can shoot out games.” Boldiston said the Lions would continue to work hard ahead of their clash against North Ballarat City this weekend. The winner will go straight through to the grand final. “We know we are the hunted and the girls are experienced enough and quite comfortable with that,” he said. “They know what to do and know they have to put in the hard work.” The Lions’ B-grade side suffered a shock loss at the hands of Lake Wendouree. The Lions had won 61 games in a row. Boldiston said the loss would fire them up for the rest of the finals series. The Lions will play Redan in an elimination semi-final. The Lions’ C and D grade sides both won their qualifying finals. As with the A-grade side, they will be playing for grand final spots this weekend.

Straight-shooting Melton sends Macedon out of finals Macedon has been left disappointed by a straight sets exit in the Riddell District Netball League. Having lost just one game for the regular season, the Cats dropped two in as many weeks to be bundled out of the finals on Sunday by Melton. The Cats were left on the back foot with key goaler Chloe Wilson out with illness, which restricted their shooting options. With a wet court to start the game and a tricky wind, it was which team would handle the conditions better early on. Centrals’ experience at the goaling end was the key and they opened up a five goal lead at the first break. It was an even second quarter, before the Cats, who changed their shooting line-up at half-time, hit back late in the third quarter. When the Cats scored the first goal of the

last quarter, scores were level. Centrals found another gear and shot away to win, 33-29. Cats coach Ciara Stewart said they didn’t play to their potential leading to them exiting the finals earlier than expected. “We normally kill turnovers but we only had one recovery in the defensive end in the first half,” she said. “The defenders struggled to adjust and we played an attacking end line-up we hadn’t played all year. “We lost that game. Credit to Melton for winning, but we definitely had our chances. We’re extremely disappointed to go out in straight sets.” The biggest difference between the two teams was the shooting percentages and it really hurt the Cats. Centrals shot at 77 per cent making 33 goals from 43 attempts. The Cats could only manage to shoot at 58 per cent, missing 21

shots. Stewart admits not having Wilson in the side made a big difference. Besides Stewart, the other three players in the attacking end were all 19 or under. “Chloe was a massive hole,” said Stewart. “We can play together with our eyes closed. We needed to turn the defenders eyes and we couldn’t do that. “Last time we played Melton, we won by 20. They got on top of us with Tara [Burnip] in goals early on and we then put Chloe and I in there and it just opened. “Other than against Riddell, Tay [Tayla Hardiman] hasn’t played goals for us and it’s a big ask for her. “In the end, we said Melton ladies out-netballed us, it wasn’t amazing but they were women who knew what do to when they were stuck.” Tara Murray

Cats look to break 42-year premiership drought

Macedon will be hoping to end a 42-year premiership drought after becoming the first team through to the Riddell District Football League grand final. The Cats, who haven’t played in a grand final since 1975 when they won their last flag, won through to this year’s grand final with a solid win against Diggers Rest on Saturday. Cats coach Jeff Andrews said the whole club was excited to finally make it back into a grand final. “It’s about 40 years since we’ve won it and I think 40 years since we’ve been in a grand final. “The closest we’ve been is a prelim and I was coaching that 20 years ago and we lost by five points. It’s magnificent and the boys and supporters are looking forward to it.” After a slow start on Saturday, neither team was able to get away with the game. Three late goals to the Cats in the second quarter would prove to be the difference.

The Cats dominated with the wind in the third quarter, but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard. There were some nervous moments for both sides in the last quarter. The Burras had the chance to get the margin within a goal late in the quarter, but Matthew Krul missed from right in front after playing on from a mark. The Cats settled to hang on and win, 9.14 (68)-8.8 (56). Andrews said he was confident they could hold on and win, but knew they needed to keep the scoreboard pressure on. “It’s been a theme all year that our poor kicking has kept teams in it,” he said. “When the opposition has had the wind this year, we’ve been able to defend really well with our defence our strong suit all year. “We play a way which has helped us and we had to go back to it. It was a magnificent tackle by Mills [on Krul]. A game-saving tackle.”

Sunbury Lions’ season in the Ballarat Football League was summed up in its elimination final loss to Redan on Sunday. The Lions led at half-time, but weren’t able to stick with Redan in the second half, losing 13.13 (91)-9.9 (63). Grant Valles and Alik Magin kicked three goals each for the Lions, while the backline really held strong and did the job on Redan’s key forwards. Lions’ coach Ben Jordan said the result showed the gap between the Lions, which finished fifth, and Redan, which finished three games clear in fourth spot. By Tara Murray When the Rupertswood senior side won its first ever Riddell District Football League final on Sunday there was joy – and also a sense of relief. After years of near misses and defeats in finals they had been expected to win since joining the competition in 2013, the Sharks finally had reason to celebrate. The Sharks held off Riddell in a hard-fought semi-final, winning 8.10 (58)-5.8 (38). Sharks coach Kevin Fitzgerald was delighted his players had finally put together a good finals performance for four quarters after fading in their qualifying final loss to Macedon. “We thought we could do it, but we had to put it on the park,” he said. “I thought we were really good for three quarters last week and just ran out of legs. Today I think we were able to just keep going. “We pretty much controlled the game in really tough conditions.” The Sharks were the better team in the first half, and that was reflected on the scoreboard with a 27-point lead. While they kicked well in the first half, goal kicking become a problem in the second. With the Sharks not converting on the scoreboard, the Bombers got back into the game. “We kicked five straight points and they kicked two straight goals [in the third quarter],” Fitzgerald said. “All of a sudden it looks like they’re closing on us … we’ve had more of the play but weren’t able to put them away. “If it had been 2.3 instead, we would have had a winning quarter.” The Bombers kicked the first goal of the last quarter and looked to have the momentum early on. At that stage, many in the crowd were wondering if the Bombers could continue the Sharks’ finals misery. The Sharks responded, and when Lochie Muir kicked their first goal of the second half, it was game over. Fitzgerald was full of praise for Muir and said the goal was reward for the hard work he’d done all day. Brett Chambers controlled the back half for the Sharks with several intercept marks and proved too hard to stop. David Morrice and Nathan Caldone were also named among the Sharks’ best. One disappointing aspect of the game was a hand injury to Dylan Podolczak. Fitzgerald said he would be out for the season. The Sharks will face Diggers Rest in the preliminary final. Fitzgerald said they would assess the fitness of Dean Putt, who missed the win against the Bombers, but said he was looking unlikely to play. “It’s on Clarke Oval and it looks like it will be wet and it could be a sluggy game,” he said.

For the Cats, skipper James Wright kicked two goals and led from the front. A grand final appearance is reward for Wright who has been with the club through the tough times. “He missed all of last year … I think maybe with him we could have taken a step further. “Put him on the ball or up forward and you always know what you’re going to get.” The Cats now get a week off before playing the Burras or Rupertswood in the grand final. Andrews said they would take confidence into the game, no matter who the play, having beaten both sides during the finals. He said they would likely have a full squad to pick from. “Dan Markworth was a bit tight, but in two weeks he’ll be fine. Matty Dick and Teghan Henderson will be back.

Kyneton’s hopes of getting past the first week of the Bendigo Football League finals have fallen short for a third straight year. Not much separated Kyneton and Sandhurst all day. Sandhurst had a four points lead at three-quarter time and did the damage early in the last quarter. Despite the Tigers kicking late goals, they fell short losing 12.18 (90)-13.7 (85). Ben Weightman kicked six goals for the Tigers and had plenty of support from Mitchell Scholard who kicked four goals. Josh Govan and Weightman were named the Tigers best in the loss. Gisborne will have to make the grand final the hard way in the Bendigo Netball League after a qualifying final loss against Golden Square. In a high-scoring game, Golden Square let the Bulldogs do the chasing all day and after falling behind in the third quarter, they couldn’t respond losing 53-49. The Bulldogs now face Kangaroo Flat in an elimination semi-final. The Bulldogs under-17’s were knocked out of the finals, losing to Sandhurst 60-58. It wasn’t all bad news for the Bulldogs, with their reserves team winning their elimination final against South Bendigo. The new BMW 5 Series is a technological tour de force. It’s as sporty as ever, though there’s a slight leaning to the luxurious side as the ‘5 is almost being seen as a smaller version of the super-luxury 7 Series. New drive modes alter steering, suspension, gearshift and throttle settings to suit the driver’s mood. The previous Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes on offer are now joined by a new Adaptive Mode. This system uses sensor inputs and navigation data and varies the vehicle’s responses to fit. To permit new owners to come to grips with the intricacies of what’s on offer in their new car, each BMW dealer now employs a BMW Genius to run through the various systems. The stylists have worked hard to present the new 5 Series as a luxury sports sedan, with relatively restrained lines and high quality details. Radiator grilles are very much back in vogue with most car marques these days and the BMW’s latest unit is pretty imposing. BMW’s distinctive ‘Hofmeister’ kink in the C-pillar is obviously part of the package, however the side bead line has been linked for the first time to the kink. The impressibly low 0.24 drag co-efficient of Australian 5 Series models is due to an Active Air System that can close the radiator grilles to alter airflow around the vehicle. As you would expect, the 540i rides on big-diameter, 20-inch, individual light alloy wheels.

Wireless phone charging and wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay works well and the extended Bluetooth system can connect to two smartphones at the same time. BMW 540i has a 12.3-inch multifunctional screen that adapts to the selected drive mode. Eco Pro, for example, offers blue-lit displays that focus on efficient driving, while Sport brings in red dials and a focus on revs and speed. Safety systems include standard stability control, dynamic stability control, anti-lock braking with brake assist, cornering brake control and dynamic traction control. Fully autonomous driving is getting closer by the day. In something like the 540i you would like to think that all owners are paying full attention to their driving, but just in case there are plenty of features to save the inattentive. The Driving Assistant Plus package brings next-generation driving assistance to today’s Bimmers. Four side-mounted radar systems work with the front one to give a continuous picture of what’s going on all around the vehicle. Steering and Lane Control assistant gives the ability to drive hands free for periods up to 30 seconds. The Active Cruise Control, with stop-go function, brakes and accelerates according to traffic flow, a relaxing way to survive major traffic jams. It works right down to zero km/h. There are also front cross-traffic warning, lane keeping assist, evasion aid and crossroads warning. Parking Assistant Plus offers Active Park Distance Control to the rear, with Surround
