Policy up in smoke The state’s new smoking restrictions could be taken to the next level in the Macedon Ranges. As of today the state government has banned smoking in all outdoor venues where food is served – including privately-owned beer gardens and balconies. State legislation will allow venues to designate areas to smoking and drinking only, and have the flexibility to change the status of outdoor areas to smoking and non-smoking at different times. But Macedon Ranges council’s draft Smoke Free Outdoor Areas Policy is proposing a complete ban of smoking at venues that serve food and drink on council land. It would mean venues that have outdoor spaces only on the footpath would be forced to become 100 per cent smoke-free. Manager of Gisborne’s The Jolly Miller, Brittany Klaaysen, said the cafe supported a smoking ban. Ms Klaaysen said the ban would “probably” affect a number of customers, but she hoped it would not deter them from attending the cafe. “We do have a lot of regular customers who come and have a coffee and a smoke outside.” Woodend’s Bourkies Bakery manager Adam Bourke said he was “all for” a ban on smoking in the bakery’s outside seating area. “It’s not going to hurt you to walk 20 metres around the corner, then come and sit down and have

your meal,” Mr Bourke said. “I prefer that people don’t smoke because of the mess it leaves on the ground and the smell for the other customers.” Many pubs and restaurants will be unaffected by the ban as they have courtyards and beer gardens on private land.

They will only be subject to the state laws. But the council said its proposed ban would affect an estimated 60 businesses across the Macedon Ranges. Council community safety acting manager Karen Dunstan said the council was making health a priority. “We live in a society where there is still very much a social connection between drinking and smoking and this exposes staff and patrons to harmful secondhand smoke,” Ms Dunstan said. “And it doesn’t provide a supportive environment for those trying to quit.” The new policy is open for public comment until Friday, September 1. Global move not universally liked By Serena Seyfort With Sunbury’s Global Learning Centre (GLC) on the way, services in Macedon Street are in for a reshuffle – and not everyone’s happy. Sunbury Visitor Information Centre will be moved from its current home in the Old Sunbury Courthouse into the learning centre. A move Sunbury Residents Association has described as a “travesty”. In a letter to the council, association president Peter Free said the decision to move the information centre was made “without

any community notice”. Last week he told Star Weekly: “The best place for the information centre is where it is”. “It will be swallowed up in the Global Learning Centre.” A report to the council last month stated that both staff and volunteers of the information centre were “very excited” about the move. But Mr Free, also a member of the learning centre’s advisory committee, said the plan to relocate the information centre had been “unanimously rejected” at GLC Community Consultative Committee meetings.

He said the current location and stand-alone building was the most accessible option for an information centre because buses and caravans could park outside. Mayor Drew Jessop said the centre’s new home ensured it would have access to modern facilities and provided “ease-of-use for residents and visitors by bringing services to one central location”. As part of the GLC project, the Sunbury Library will be moved to the Sunbury Youth Centre from December while the learning centre is being built.

The old library will be demolished and a new one will be included in the learning centre. The George Evans Museum will close from December during construction. “During this period, council staff and volunteers will catalogue and … digitise the museum collection,” Cr Jessop said. Hume Global Learning Centre - Sunbury is expected to open in 2019. In July, the council moved that any future use of the courthouse would be in consultation with the community. It has not responded to the association’s letter.

Flat out no for apartments Plans to build an apartment building in Gisborne have been thwarted by Macedon Ranges council. Councillors last week knocked back an application for what would have been Gisborne’s first apartment building, determining it was “out of character for the whole region”. It was the second time councillors went against council officers recommendations and refused to grant the permit. In February, the council knocked back the proposal to build 29 dwellings, including 10 townhouses, one single-storey dwelling and 18 apartments in a two-storey building at 22 Calthorpe Street. The applicant lodged an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Adminstrative Tribunal. At a hearing earlier this month council officers and the applicant discussed revised plans for the apartment. Officers last week recommended the council advise VCAT that it supported the proposal, subject to a number of conditions. But councillor Helen Radnedge said the plan was “not in line with the town”. She moved to deny the application, saying the plan was “out of character for the whole region”. Some councillors were concerned that allowing one apartment building could set a precedent. Councillor Henry Bleeck said he believed this type of housing was more affordable for younger people. The council was divided on the issue but moved to oppose the developer’s application.

A school of upstanding students Macedon Primary School is working to ensure its playground is a bully free zone. Last week pupils took part in anti-bullying workshops run by not-for-profit charity Bully Zero Australia Foundation. Videos and role play exercises were used to teach the children about all types of bullying and their consequences. The pupils were encouraged to be proactive in looking out for their peers by safely stepping in when someone is being bullied – acting as upstanders, rather than bystanders. The workshops dealt with cyber bullying, protecting personal information online and talking to strangers online. Bully Zero team members also talked with school staff about working on an anti-bullying culture. Parents were invited to be involved too, learning about the applications that can help monitor children’s online behaviour and support systems for children experiencing bullying. Gisborne road death

A 27-year-old Kyneton man died when his car and a tow truck collided in Gisborne last Monday. Emergency services were called to Gisborne-Melton Road, south of Couangalt Road, just after 6pm. Police have been told the car crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a tow truck. The driver of the car died at the scene. Good timing for Ranges travel By Serena Seyfort Commuting will soon become a little easier for Macedon Ranges residents using public transport. New timetables are on the way for V/Line trains and for buses travelling to Sunbury from Romsey and Lancefield. V/Line passengers who use Malmsbury, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Clarkefield stations will have the option of 27 new train

services as of Sunday, August 27. Nine extra services on Saturdays and Sundays will increase the frequency of daytime weekend trains from about every 90 to every 60 minutes. The late-night service on Fridays will be extended to run every week night. Trains will leave Southern Cross Station at 11.52pm and stop at Malmsbury, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Clarkefield on the way to Bendigo. A new weekday off-peak service will leave Southern Cross at 9.52pm.

The new timetable is available at www.vline. com.au/27august. Romsey and Lancefield residents commuting to Sunbury and Clarkefield stations will get a revised bus timetable from Thursday, August 17. Three morning bus services between Lancefield, Romsey and Sunbury will depart earlier. City commuters will be able to catch the 8.22am V/Line train from Clarkefield and

will no longer have to wait 87 minutes for a connecting service. Students attending Sunbury Downs College will no longer have to wait 75 minutes at Sunbury station to catch the next bus to get to school on time. The new timetable is available at ptv.vic.gov.au. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the state government had organised the new bus timetable following a strong community campaign.

Loo hullabaloo for Lancefield Lancefield sports clubs are celebrating the arrival of female change rooms, putting an end to the need for female players to change in their cars or the public toilets. Lancefield Football Netball Club president Leanne Backwell said the “fantastic facility” would be more than just a place to get changed. “It will be something they can call home as well,” Ms Backwell said. She said the female teams now had their own space for motivational messages and to gather. The state government funded the $450,000 facility and local traders provided discounted materials. Managed by Lancefield Park Recreation Reserves Incorporated, the change rooms were designed pro-bono by local architect Stephan Kosa and constructed by local builder John Poletti. Serena Seyfort

Efforts to reinvigorate Kyneton’s Black Hill Reserve are continuing more than two years after bushfire devastated about 80 per cent of the reserve. Projects to regenerate and protect the natural environment are being co-ordinated by Friends of Black Hill and Macedon Ranges council. More than 200 nest boxes have been built by local schools, men’s sheds and the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre since the fire, caused by a lighting strike on January 7, 2015. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said a monitoring program showed activity in the nest boxes had increased by 60 per cent since 2015. She said footage of sugar gliders, the threatened brush-tailed phascogale, a sparrowhawk, brush-tailed possums and a

rarely seen Australian Owlet-nightjar had been recorded. Picnic tables constructed and installed by young men from Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre have recently replaced those lost in the fire. Young men from the centre have also been clearing the reserve’s paths. To commemorate the resilience of the community and the reserve, Friends of Blackhill plan to install a memorial bird birth. The large granite bird bath will be designed to attract bird life in a northern part of the reserve. New look for Romsey central By Serena Seyfort Romsey’s main street is set to get a $550,000 revamp. A makeover of the town centre is on the way to help draw in more visitors and stimulate local business and employment. The state government announced last week it would spend $400,000 on the facelift as part of the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund. Minister for Regional Development Jaala

Pulford said the upgrade should help boost local jobs. “This project will not only create an attractive environment where Romsey’s businesses can thrive, it will be yet another drawcard for visitors to the food, wine and tourist destination,” Ms Pulford said. Macedon Ranges council will contribute $150,000 to the project, which it developed in conjunction with the Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council was glad to support businesses keeping jobs local as a high portion of residents were travelling outside Romsey to work and shop. “Local employment is important for the

health and wellbeing of our residents,” Cr Anderson said. Starting later this year, Romsey township will get safer pedestrian access, upgraded historical and interpretive information and signs, new lighting, landscaping and street furniture and bike facilities. The works are expected to take one year. The council has said it will work closely with businesses in the area to minimise disruption during the upgrade.

Big hand for cats, dogs Macedon Ranges rescue cats and dogs are being showered with community goodwill by shoppers. Community donations for Woodend pet shelter Pets Haven are being collected by Sunbury’s Coles supermarket. In the past month, $1500 in cash donations and about 10 trolleys of pet supplies have been received. Pets Haven director Trish Burke said it was “very humbling” to see the community supporting the not-for-profit organisation that rehomes cats and dogs. “The community spirit behind this fundraising has been amazing,” Ms Burke said. “All donations will be used to help feed, rehabilitate and ultimately rehouse abandoned pets into loving homes.” The initiative was started by Sunbury Coles staff member Lee McAlister. Ms McAlister said she was blown away by how quickly the community had supported the cause.

“This is a close-knit community and many of us are also serious animal lovers,” she said. “Community members have embraced this donation drive with open arms.” Sunbury’s Coles will continue to collect donations in the coming months. MY PLACE Elaine Brogan has always had a passion for history and heritage. Since moving to Sunbury two and a half years ago, Elaine has been doing her bit to preserve local heritage. She speaks with Serena Seyfort. What’s your connection to Sunbury?

Melbourne trying to protect and make known our beautiful heritage and history.

When I became a widow, I looked at retirement villages and chose one in Sunbury that allowed me to keep my little dogs with me. I moved here two and a half years ago. I also have relatives at Riddells Creek, Gisborne and Mount Macedon, and a sister lived off Elizabeth Drive in Sunbury for 15 years. So I’m familiar with this lovely part of the world.

How are you applying this passion to your new home town?

What do you like about the area? The fresh air, the friendly people – it’s just like a little country town, which I come from in Gippsland originally. It’s a beautiful environment to live in. And I think we’re very lucky to have the train service into the CBD. Do you have a favourite place in Sunbury? Jacksons Hill; and I love the Nook; down at the river Jacksons Creek. And I love Rupertswood. Tell us about your love of history. I’ve always wanted to know about why, how and when since I was a kid. I just love history and heritage and I know that there’s a hell of a lot of that out here and it needs to be protected. An Order of Australia medal was bestowed on me on Australia Day in 2015 for my work for over 30 years in the western suburbs of

I recently joined Sunbury Residents Association, mainly because of the major, major housing developments that are planned for the valley. I feel strongly about the Jacksons Hill area. Many years ago, when I was on Red Cross Appeals committee during the nurses strike, I was a volunteer up at Caloola (former Sunbury mental hospital). I’ve been to the community meetings about Jacksons Hill and I wrote my own submissions to the Victoria Planning Authority.. They want to put all this housing in and there’s not enough water. There’s not enough infrastructure for the people that are here now, let alone tens of thousands more. You only just need to drive around Sunbury now and the roads are clogged. The green wedges – the hills around Sunbury which were meant to be kept as open spaces – are slowly being infringed upon with housing. Parking down the shopping centre here in Sunbury is become worse. Unless you go down first thing in the morning, it’s impossible to park. I know that the council recently decided to move Sunbury Visitor Information Centre from the Old Courthouse … the Old Courthouse would make a great historical society museum.

Manage stress and depression (with expert help) as this causes trouble with focus and concentration – and therefore memory. 4. Maintain social contact, through work, volunteering or otherwise. And here’s The Triple L, a great memory jogging process, for name-forgetter types – but it can work for almost anything: LOOK: As soon as you learn their name, focus briefly on their face and choose a standout feature, such as a dimple, bushy eyebrows, or a big nose. LINK: Match the name and feature with a visual image – for example, big-nose Sam, Daryl dimple, Paul bushy eyebrows. LOCK: Take a concentrated second to “see” the link in your mind. Next time you see that dimple, the name Daryl will pop in. It’s the same when you put car keys down: Look at them, link with an object they’re on or near – such as fruit bowl, vase, table – then lock the visual image in. Use The Triple L often enough and it will become second nature. And it’s mighty useful at home, work and out and about. Chinese medicine’s cup runneth over with wisdom Christine Ryan, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner, says she often has clients who want the benefits of acupuncture – but not the needles.

Christine was originally trained by Professor Wong, a guru in Chinese medicine, who believed health and life was all about balance between home and work, exercise and rest and the right balance of food for the seasons. “A treatment with Professor Wong included tongue and pulse diagnosis, cupping and gua sha, acupuncture, herbs and tai chi movements to assist internal organ health,” Christine says. “He was an elderly gentleman who often said, ‘The reason women live longer is because after a meal they do the dishes, but the men no, they are lazy – they sit down so no movement’. She says that cupping is beneficial for pain as it brings in the blood and qi (life force) to hasten healing. “It’s also good for diagnoses, because it shows the build-up or retention of heat that needs to be released. Cupping is used by Greeks, many African tribes – using animal horns – and quite a lot, I’ve been told, in the Muslim community, as well as throughout Europe. “The same toxin release provided by cupping is also gained from gua sha, using ceramic spoons rather than glass cups.” Diet therapy is another interesting Chinese medicine approach, Christine says. “How come someone can eat something and it doesn’t make them fat or cause pimples?,” Christine asks. “Some foods are right for some and others shouldn’t go there. Right now, we should be eating warming foods to keep blood and qi moving.”

SPORT Rupertswood breaks Macedon’s unbeaten record Macedon’s charge towards an unbeaten netball season was ended at the hands of Rupertswood on Saturday, with Rupo running over the top of the Cats in the final quarter. With both sides bound for Riddell District Football Netball League A grade finals, it was a tight contest throughout but the home side found the extra edge when they needed it most to come away with a memorable 39-36 victory. Rupertswood coach Di McCormack said it was one of the best wins she had ever been a part of. “It’s one we’ve been working hard towards, this is the third time we’ve played them this year and each time we’ve got a bit closer,” McCormack said. “That final whistle, it was like we’d just won a grand final. The girls were elated, we took it up to them in every grade and from the start of the day with the under 19s we showed them that Rupo were there to play.”

Right from the start it was a fierce contest, with neither side able to break away by more than three goals all game. Macedon led by three at quarter-time, and maintained that to half-time, with Rupertswood drawing to within two goals at the final change. Hayley Mathews left the game after the first quarter due to illness, with Lucy Batina coming up from the B grade side, and McCormack ran a double team on gun Macedon playmaker Ciara Stewart to help give her side the edge. “We decided to take the game to them,” McCormack said. “We played them two weeks ago and lost by two, so we knew we had it in us, and today we just kept fighting, stuck to the game plan and it worked. “Going in to the last quarter we felt we had the momentum, the whole squad from the bench out felt it and we ran with it.”

With finals on the horizon, McCormack said her side feared no one now. “I think this is the most settled team we’ve had for a while,” she said. “To win that game I think shows that we’re a side who can be playing in a grand final.” In B grade, Rupertswood shot out of the blocks and never looked back as it claimed a comfortable nine-goal win. Rupo led 14-5 at quarter-time to set up the game, and while Macedon came back slightly it never realistically threatened to overhaul the margin as it finished at 42-33. Cats nail a testing win By Ewen McRae Macedon is back on the winners’ list and has reclaimed top spot on the Riddell District Football League ladder with a strong showing against Rupertswood on Saturday. With the top two sides refreshed following a week off, their clash had a finals-style intensity. In the end, sheer weight of scoring opportunities got the Cats over the line as they held off a fast-finishing Rupertswood for an 8.17 (65)-8.7 (55) result. Macedon coach Jeff Andrews said it was pleasing to grab a win over another finals-bound side and especially to do it in such difficult conditions, with the wind favouring one end, but mainly going across the ground. “It was a really tough, tight and hard game of footy,” Andrews said. “No one could get the space or use their skills due to the wind, so with a lot on the line it was tough from the start.

“This game and the Diggers Rest game a few weeks back are the two toughest games we’ve played this year in terms of the intensity, so it was good to come away with the win this time.” In difficult, windy conditions, it would come down to which side could make the most of limited chances, with just two goals scored in the first quarter. While Macedon held the lead, its 1.6 for the term had potential to hurt it as Rupertswood was far more accurate from its chances. The Cats won the day in the third quarter, booting 4.3 to 1.1 to stretch out to a 27-point advantage, the biggest lead of the match. But Andrews said the Cats never felt comfortable, with Rupertswood coming home with the wind before ultimately falling just short. “We were never in control and they were never out of the game, so it was tight all the way,” he said.

“We had a big focus to get back to the way we wanted to play after a couple of losses. We addressed some key areas leading into this game and we thought we were significantly better at the contest today.” While Todd Podolczak kicked five goals for Rupertswood, a more even spread of goalkickers helped the Macedon cause. On the down side for the Cats, Shaun Harrison, Toby Sims and Dan Markworth all ended the game with injuries and are in doubt for this week. Andrews said that after coming through a tough portion of the season, it was now about fine-tuning his side for a finals campaign. “There’s three games to go and we play a few sides who are struggling a bit, so we’ll get ourselves ready,” he said. “We’ve got through the hump part of the season and we’re hitting the home straight feeling good.”

Riddell twice kept Wallan scoreless through a quarter yet only just managed to hold on for victory in their Riddell District Football League clash on Saturday. With a strong wind favouring one end, Riddell led from start to finish in the 6.12 (48)-5.13 (43) result, but Wallan nearly pinched a win late with a stirring final quarter. Riddell had first use of the wind and if not for some errant kicking could have stretched out to a substantial lead. It kicked 2.6 for the term while keeping the home side scoreless in the process. Wallan hit back in the second to reduce the margin to three points at the long break, but a second scoreless term kicking in to the wind saw it fall further behind again as the Bombers kicked 3.6 in the third. It looked like Riddell had done enough, but it got a taste of its own medicine when it failed to trouble the scorers in the final quarter as the home side roared home with the wind. If not for some missed shots the result would have been reversed, but 2.10 for the quarter ultimately cost Wallan the four points as Riddell closed the gap on the top six in the run towards finals. Riddell remains in seventh, but is now just percentage behind Wallan and Sunbury Kangaroos. Elsewhere, Romsey had too many weapons for Melton Centrals in its clash, with five first-quarter goals setting it on the path to a five-goal win. Romsey kicked nearly half its total score in the opening quarter before pulling away again in the last term to register an important 10.5 (65)-5.5 (35) win. Sunbury Jets power to Big V minor title

By Ewen McRae Calder Cannons were shown just how big the gap is between where they sit and the top sides in the TAC Cup at Warrawee Park on Saturday. In diabolically windy conditions, the visiting Cannons kicked just one goal in the first half as the Oakleigh Chargers displayed the clean hands and rapid ball movement that has them on top of the ladder in the run towards finals. The final scoreline, 11.11 (77)-6.8 (44), showed the gap between the two sides, and Cannons coach Andrew Johnston was realistic about the result. “I think they [Oakleigh] showed why they’re on top; they certainly handled the conditions a lot better than we did,” Johnston said. “They were cleaner in marking, better at contested ball, their tackling pressure was right up there, and we just need our blokes to learn from that and keep developing because that’s the level we want to be at.” Both sides struggled to adjust to the wind early, with the cross breeze not favouring either end and making field kicking a nightmare. It took until a minute before quarter-time for either side to kick a major, and it was the home side which struck first. The Chargers took control of the game in the second term, with dominant ruck work helping them to four goals for the quarter and a handy 28-point buffer. The Cannons had just 1.4 for the half as they struggled to create regular scoring chances. The second half was a far more even affair as the visitors adjusted to the conditions, lowering their eyes when going forward and hitting short targets rather than bombing long into the wind. Goals typically came from a contest in the goal square or a mark close to goal, with long kicking out of the question for both sides. Jack Bytel was a standout for the Cannons all day in his return match, while Ben Huggard was strong through the midfield and Jacob McNicol toiled hard in the ruck. Johnston said the lessons of the second half needed to be heeded by his side, after they showed they could match it with Oakleigh but were left to rue a lacklustre second term. “It’s those little moments throughout quarters and throughout halves where we’ve let ourselves down,” Johnston said. “I think we only lost the second half by a few points, which was pleasing, but you’ve got to bring that intensity for a full game. “When you give quality opposition a four or five goal headstart it’s pretty hard to get it back. “Finals are still a chance, but if we don’t come to play and our work rate isn’t up then we might just be making up the numbers.” The loss leaves Calder a game outside the finals places with four rounds to play.

The Sunbury Jets’ women have wrapped up their Big V Championship regular season in style by picking up a pair of wins at the weekend to seal the minor premiership. Taking on Eltham on Saturday and Warrandyte on Sunday, the Jets were too good in the big moments, finishing the season two games ahead of Knox, Bulleen and Waverley. Saturday’s match was an arm wrestle from the beginning, with the Wildcats taking the game up to the Jets from the tip-off. It was some outstanding three-point shooting from the Jets that helped decide the result, as they went at 41 per cent from beyond the arc in the 86-82 win. Karen Duever (36 points, six rebounds) and Orla O’Reilly (25 points, 10 rebounds) stood tall when it mattered to lead the Jets to the crucial win. Going into Sunday’s game, the Jets knew they had top spot sealed up, but that didn’t stop them putting Warrandyte to the sword. Every member of the Jets’ squad saw some court time as Sunbury tuned up for finals with a 76-63 win. O’Reilly was again strong with 28 points and six assists. The Jets will enjoy a rest before their finals campaign kicks off in a fortnight. In men’s division one, the Jets lost both of their games at the weekend to finish fifth in their pool. On Saturday, they took the fight up to Chelsea but fell short in a 97-94 loss despite strong showings from Javari Williams (28 points, 12 rebounds), Deng Chan (24 points, nine rebounds) and Jacob Formosa (23 points). Their regular season finished with a disappointing loss to Melton in the Thoroughbreds’ fourth win of the season. Despite Williams, Chan and Formosa dominating again, Melton had a better spread of contributors as it finished the season with a 107-97 win. The losses mean the Jets’ men will miss finals this season. In the mens youth league one semi-finals, Sunbury fell to Werribee to bring an end to their season. The Jets got some strong contributions from all their starters, with Kyle Collins (20 points, five rebounds) a standout, but they had no answer for Werribee’s Mitchell Alush (36 points) who guided the Devils to a 89-71 win. Kyneton finds rhythm but Gisborne and Sunbury slide

Gisborne slipped to its fourth loss from its past six games on Saturday, overpowered by Maribyrnong Greens in state league five west. Despite sitting above the Greens on the table, Gisborne could not keep pace with the home side as it found the back of the net regularly to come away with a 3-1 win. It started badly for Gisborne as it conceded inside the first 10 minutes, before Jacob Antoine sparked his side with an equaliser just three minutes later. It was a smart piece of play by Antoine, who beat Greens defender Haris Ibisevic in a solo effort to slot the crucial goal. However, the visitors were unable to capitalise on the momentum switch, as Maribyrnong re-took the lead in the shadows of half-time, and sealed the result after the break with a strong strike with 20 minutes to play.

The loss is Gisborne’s third in the past month, conceding 14 goals in the past six games as well. The Greens will leap-frog them on the ladder, with Gisborne slipping to seventh in the run towards the end of the season. In other games, Kyneton District and Keilor Wolves fought out a tense draw, with home-team Kyneton taking the fight right up to their mid-table opponents. Despite sitting second last on the ladder, Kyneton District was up for the fight against the mid-table Wolves and came away with a 3-3 draw. It was just the third game this season that Kyneton has taken away some points, with a win and two draws from the 17 rounds to date. With bottom-placed Maidstone United also fighting out a draw, it leaves Kyneton District

just one point ahead of last place with five rounds to play. In state league three, Sunbury United’s winning run came to an end playing away to La Trobe Uni, conceding the points after being reduced to nine men late in the game. Coming into the contest with just one loss from the past seven games, Sunbury was primed to continue its climb up the ladder, but slipped behind early as La Trobe scored after just seven minutes. The Uni boys held that lead until Sunbury equalised midway through the second half as Djafari Mwarabu scored off a Jake Mcintyre free kick. La Trobe hit back to re-take the lead after 74 minutes and held on to take the points, 2-1. The loss leaves United in ninth place. Ewen McRae

Three clubs make GDCA switch Three new clubs have joined the Gisborne District Cricket Association ranks, following a vote by the existing GDCA clubs at last week’s annual meeting. Eynesbury, Trentham and Melton Centrals will all field sides in the GDCA this summer, as the association moves to 10-team grades for the 2017-18 season. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said it was a simple choice for the current clubs. “There was good support from all the existing clubs, so all three [new clubs] were voted into the competition,” he said. “With the move to 10-team grades, these sides will give that extra layer of competition across the grades and make the association stronger.” While the grades each club will fit into will be determined at another meeting in the coming weeks, it is expected Eynesbury will field its first XI in B grade and Trentham will play in C grade. Melton Centrals will field two of their lower XIs in the association, with their top sides remaining in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The addition of the extra clubs means a re-jigged GDCA competition structure allowing for more two-day cricket, which McIntyre said would help everyone in the long run. “A club like Eynesbury, which will have four sides coming in and coming off a premiership, should be competitive in B grade,” McIntyre said. “We mightn’t see a lift in the standard in the first couple of years, but having more two-day cricket will hopefully allow more juniors and younger players a better opportunity to make

a contribution in their matches. I also think having more two-day cricket will attract better players to the competition.” The move to 10-team grades means Rupertswood will avoid relegation from McIntyre Cup, while Lancefield will be promoted from B grade. Last year’s B-grade runner up, Wallan, has been offered the final spot in the McIntyre Cup, with the association waiting to hear if the offer will be accepted. Sunbury United will fill the vacancy if Wallan declines. “Wallan are having a meeting this week to decide if they’ll take that spot,” McIntyre said. “They’re just not sure yet if they have the personnel to come up and be sustainable. “If Wallan don’t want to come up, and there’s no pressure on them to do that, then we’ll invite Sunbury United – and they’re quite keen if the opportunity presents itself.” In addition to the new clubs and grade changes, the GDCA has endorsed the introduction of a send-off rule, which was recently added to the Laws of Cricket for local competitions. “We’ve supported that change to give umpires some more power against bad behavior,” McIntyre said. “And we’ll bring our one-day rules in line with other competitions with regards to fielding restrictions and the like, but aside from those two rules it’s business as usual this season.”
