Sunbury property runs hot Sunbury is one of Melbourne’s most affordable suburbs, but local experts believe that’s about to change. Sunbury’s median house price was $452,500 as of June 30, making it the fourth most affordable suburb across Melbourne at almost half the citywide median of $822,000, according to Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). The suburb’s median house price has risen about $67,000 since December 30, 2016, up from $412,500. And local real estate agents say there is “no question” the price rises will continue. L. J. Whorlow First National Real Estate manager Patrick Franklin said the pace of change in local real estate was escalating. “We just auctioned a property – we set the reserve at $355,000 and it sold for $413,000,” he said. “We’re literally going back to properties we appraised three months ago and putting an extra $30,000 or $40,000 on them. “Whilst Sunbury probably still is ranked fourth, I think that’s probably going to change, certainly in the next 12 months.” Mr Franklin attributed the increases to a shortage of houses, record-low interest rates and the first-home buyer grant. He didn’t think expected rises in interest rates would “halt” the property price increase. “Unless there’s a heap of stock that comes on to the market in the next six

months – which I can’t see why it would – there’s still going to be a massive shortage of houses,” he said. Sunbury’s Brad Teal Real Estate director Craig Teal said there was “no question” Sunbury house prices would rise, pointing to the area as being “value for money”. He said Sunbury was appealing because it was not much further than Taylor’s Lakes and more popular suburbs from the CBD, but houses cost about $200,000 less.

Mr Teal said Sunbury had “all the facilities,” especially since Metro trains were introduced. “The electric train has meant a hell of a lot,” he said. REIV acting president Richard Simpson said strong competition for homes across Melbourne, particularly in more affordable areas, was being driven by “a sellers’ market”. Mr Franklin said first home buyers were “losing the battle” to investors for houses below Sunbury’s median price. “We sold one in Menzies Drive that had 13 offers on the property and not one of them was in the Sunbury postcode,” Mr Franklin said. “They were all out of town investors.”

Macedon plans lean, green future By Serena Seyfort An “ambitious” target has been set by Macedon Ranges council to further reduce its environmental footprint, following a push from residents. The council resolved to strive to zero net carbon emissions by 2030-31 when it adopted the Climate Change Action Plan (2017-2021) last month. Councillor Mandi Mees, the driving force behind the decision, said there was “unpacked potential” for the council to have less impact on the environment.

“Without an ambitious target we’re just going to sit and not go and pursue these opportunities,” Cr Mees said. She said achieving zero net emissions would mean “everything council does is powered by renewable energy sources and the impact of council activities on our environment is zero”. Cr Mees said the council, with the community, should work towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels and towards being self-sufficient through renewable energy. She said this would also “deliver ongoing savings for the community and the council” by reducing “exposure to the fluctuating prices of

fossil fuels”. As “the lungs of Melbourne,” Cr Mees said a mindset shift was vital for the Macedon Ranges – in both the council and the community. “We need to make sure that in everything we do we are considering our impact on our environment.” Cr Mees suggested the council set a target of zero net carbon emission by 2030-31 following public feedback on its draft Action Plan, which proposed a goal of reducing emissions by 25 per cent by 2020-21, compared to the 2014-15 baseline levels. More than 120 online responses and 10

written submissions in response to the draft plan called for a more ambitious emissions target. The council amended the target to a 50 per cent reduction by 2026-27 when it adopted the plan. Council officers will present council with the proposed costs and resources required to achieve zero net emissions by 2030-31 in October. The council has begun replacing about 1700 streetlights with energy efficient LEDs, which it expects to reduce about 680 tonnes of CO2 greenhouse gases and $128,000 in energy costs each year over the 20-year life of the lights.

Man dies in Clarkefield crash

Primary pupils are in full voice Malmsbury Primary School pupils are eagerly preparing for their time to shine at Hisense Arena. The school’s singing ensemble is the Macedon Ranges’ only representative in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular Spectacular, which will feature 3000 performers from more than 200 schools. The Malmsbury pupils will star in the mass choir, marking the school’s third year of involvement in the annual state production. Sunbury Primary School is also getting ready to perform in the mass choir for its

fourth consecutive appearance in the show. The large-scale production requires pupils to rehearse for up to six months before the event. Malmsbury Primary School principal Carolyn Tavener said the pupils were starting some “really big days” of catching the train to Melbourne to rehearse. Ms Tavener said the students were looking forward to the two performances on September 16. “They are so excited – they can’t wait,” she said.

She described the spectacular as “extraordinary”. The show’s 2017 theme, “Anything is Possible”, explores creativity, freedom of expression and self-empowerment. A man died when his vehicle and a ute collided at Clarkefield last week. The crash occurred at the MelbourneLancefield and Sutherlands roads intersection just before 7.30pm on Tuesday, July 18. Victoria Police have not confirmed the man’s identity, but he is believed to be a doctor practising in Romsey. Last Wednesday, Lifeline Medical Centre Romsey posted on Facebook that Dr Suresh Ratneswaran had “passed away in a car accident” the night before. The medical centre has been closed since. Online tributes have been flowing for the local doctor, with residents remembering him as “beautiful” and “caring”. The man killed in the crash at Clarkefield was travelling south on the Melbourne-Lancefield Road when his vehicle collided with a ute. He died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Victoria Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au. The Melbourne-Lancefield Road was the scene of more than 150 crashes, including six fatalities, between June, 2010, and June, 2015, according to VicRoads. ‘Mothballed’ plan back on agenda By Serena Seyfort Sunbury residents say Hume council has had a solution to the town’s parking woes since 2008, but has failed to act on it. The residents association last week called on the council to revisit its 2008 Sunbury Town Centre plan, which proposed multi-deck parking at two existing carparks. The plan, adopted by the council, identified Barkly Street and Station Street carparks as sites for “multi-deck car parking structure[s]”, each containing about 200 new spaces.

Sunbury Residents Association vice-president Trevor Dance said the association was “drumming the campaign up” to get more infrastructure in Sunbury.

Mr Dance said the group wanted to know why the 2008 plans had not been used. “Why do council write all these reports and do nothing with them?” Mr Dance asked. “Parking is a crucial part of infrastructure.” A lack of parking in Sunbury has been a pressing issue for years. Last month, Sunbury Business Association made a submission to the council’s budget asking for a solution to parking woes. It said Sunbury’s limited parking was having a widespread impact. “Feedback from SBA members, the Sunbury

business community, shoppers from Sunbury and surrounding regions, and the general public is that impacts are widespread,” SBA president Michael Osborne wrote. “Every day, more local and regional income is being spent outside of Sunbury.” Mr Dance said he counted 10 empty shopfronts when he drove through Sunbury two weeks ago. He said the lack of carparking was also a huge concern for future population growth. Star Weekly sought comment from Hume council.

Opens a door to history Sunbury’s elaborate 19th century mansion and birthplace of The Ashes cricket series will open to the public this weekend. Rupertswood is one of the buildings of significance that will be showcased in the Open House Melbourne program on Sunday, July 30. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said Rupertswood’s significance and inclusion in the exhibition was another reason for locals to feel proud of the area. “Rupertswood mansion forms a rich part of history for not only Sunbury, but Australian cricket,” Cr Jessop said. Designed by architect George Brown, the National Trust building was built for landowner, stud-breeder and philanthropist Sir William Clarke in 1874, according to Heritage Council Victoria. The eclectic-style two-storey, symmetrical house is one of the largest houses ever built in Victoria.

“Rupertswood is a unique representation of an extraordinary and nowadays inconceivably affluent way of life,” stated Heritage Council Victoria. The English cricket team was staying at Rupertswood when it beat a local team in a match on Christmas Eve, 1882. The winning team was presented with the ashes of a burnt bail, marking the start of The Ashes series between Australia and England. The residence has been used as a school since the 1920s. Plans to make the Macedon Ranges the top destination “just outside” Melbourne have been put out for community comment. Increasing tourism in the region is the aim of Macedon Ranges council’s Draft Macedon Ranges Visitor Economy Future Directions Paper 2017-27. Developing a strategy to make Macedon Ranges “the home of weddings and civil ceremonies” and investigating opportunities for infrastructure such as “a large internationally branded mid-range hotel” are proposed in the plan. The council’s vision is that “the Macedon Ranges will be recognised as the #1 destination just outside of Melbourne to slow down to connect with village life and get back to nature”. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said tourism was important to the local economy. “We know how fantastic we are, so let’s find ways to share our beautiful part of the world with others,” she said. Cr Anderson is encouraging residents to provide feedback on the council plan. Comments on the draft plan are being accepted until August 14. Tourism industry stakeholders can attend a think-tank session on Tuesday, August 1. Community drop-in sessions will be held on August 2 and 3. Everything changed for Terry Carrick after he had a corneal graft in 2002. A donor’s cornea meant the Riddells Creek man was “able to see” – compared to the “incredibly low” level of vision he lived with before the surgery. “One of the best days of my life was the day after the surgery – when the patch came off my eye and I was able to see,” Mr Carrick said. “It’s something which people take for granted,” he said. “But being able to see changed everything.” Mr Carrick is now determined to give others in need a lifesaving gift. He has registered to become an organ and tissue donor, and has let his family know that donating is his wish. “I’m more than happy to give anything someone can use,” he said. Throughout DonateLife week, the first week of August, the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority is urging Australians to register online to become a donor. The authority says just one donor can change the lives of up to 10 people – but only 32 per cent of Australian adults are on the national register, despite 69 per cent saying they are willing to donate. People are being asked to use DonateLife week to make it official and register to become a donor. Blooming good news The 45th Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival is on track to being even more “terrific” than before. The 11-day festival, beginning on August 31, has received $6000 from Macedon Ranges council. Committee secretary Marg Dearricott said the “terrific festival,” brought a big contingent of people to Kyneton every year, with many coming from interstate. Ms Dearricott said the final parade was usually attended by about 5000 people and featured up to 1000 community members from various groups. Flower shows, ferret racing, art exhibitions, musical performances, food and wine and a dog dash are all planned as part of the festival.

Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival was one of 55 successful applicants in the council’s Events and Festivals Grant Program and the Community Funding Scheme for 2017-18. The successful groups were presented with their grants last week. Other big winners in the Events and Festivals program were Macedon Ranges Music Festival, which received $6000 for the March event, and Malmsbury Village Fayre, which was given $6000 for its November festival. Gisborne Soccer Club was granted $6000 from the Community Funding Scheme to install new goals, while Bullengarook Pony Club received $6000 to upgrade safety fencing. Serena Seyfort

Macedon House plans draw ire By Serena Seyfort An application for a 40-unit retirement home in Gisborne has raised concerns about over-development in the Macedon Ranges. Residents turned to Facebook this month to express their concerns that the proposal for 1 Kilmore Road was unnecessary. But while some are calling for developments to “stop ruining our town,” others believe there is need for more aged-care facilities. The Kilmore Road property is mainly

vacant land, apart from one building – Macedon House, which is National Trust-listed and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Macedon House is a former early Victorian hotel described as “of historical, architectural and archaeological significance” by the Victorian Heritage Register. Macedon Ranges council confirmed that an application has been filed for the site. Planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo said the owners of

Macedon House had applied for a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application that will allow for the restoration of Macedon House and the development of the surrounding land into a retirement home.

Ms Segafredo said council officers were assessing the application and were expected to brief the council in coming months. However, the privately-owned property is also for sale with real estate agent Rodney Morley. Mr Morley said he believed the plans for a retirement village would “complement” the “gateway to Gisborne”. “It’s for the people in the area,” he said. “It’s an ugly piece of land as it lies there now. Trees are fallen over and it’s a boarded-up house.”

Sunbury Community Health has started a program, Arabic speaking Families: Safe and Strong, to work with women and children who live in the Hume and Moreland areas. The program was established because local data found the majority of people who experienced family violence and sought support in Hume were Arabic speaking.

More than 90 per cent of family violence referrals by Hume Risk Assessment Management Panel and Kildonan’s Integrated Family Violence Program were for Arabic speaking women, in the year to March 2017. The new program offers Arabic speaking financial counsellors, caseworkers and family violence counsellors to those experiencing family violence. Family violence counsellor Danielle Beaini said she thought the program would be “very beneficial”. “It does help to not have to worry about people not understanding your culture,” Ms Beaini said. “It will give them the extra push to get help.” Clients can be referred by local agencies and self-referrals.

As temperatures drop and heaters are turned up, the CFA is warning people to beware of fire hazards. A “spike in heating-related fires” made winter a busy time for firefighters, according to CFA chief officer Steve Warrington. “As the weather cools down, people bring out their heaters, turn on their electric blankets and stoke up their wood fires,” Mr Warrington said. Mount Macedon CFA brigade lieutenant Adam Damen said house fires from fireplaces were particularly prevalent in the Macedon Ranges. Last week Mr Damen attended a house fire in Mount Macedon which appeared to have been caused by hot coals being disposed of at the side of the house. He said CFA crews found a “significant fire burning underneath the house” about 4.36pm on Sunday, July 16. No one was injured in the blaze. Mr Damen advised residents to check chimneys, make sure fireplaces were clear of hazards and to dispose of hot coals and ashes carefully. Last year, 18 preventable house fires were attended by the CFA in the Macedon Ranges, according figures released by the CFA last week. This number marked an improvement on the 20 preventable residential fires the CFA was called out to in 2015.

MY PLACE Cheryl Bishop says she’s been a part of Gisborne for longer than there have been supermarkets in the town. The grandmother talks with Serena Seyfort about the changes she’s seen over the years.

How have you been involved in the community? I’ve been a volunteer at Macedon Ranges Health for the last eight years teaching broadband for seniors. It’s for anyone over 50 years of age. We connect them up to email and Facebook so that they can get in touch with family. I’m an admin on the Facebook group Macedon Ranges Community. If I see anything that I think is community-worthy I post it to the page. It’s a great way to share information. I was on the original ambulance committee to get an ambulance in Gisborne. That came about because there was an accident that we attended down on the old highway and it took an hour and a half for an ambulance to come to Gisborne. My name is on a brass plaque in the ambulance station. And I did the usual things as a young mum, for example I was on the kinder committees, and I played local sport – badminton and tennis. But now with grandchildren and volunteer work I don’t have much time! What change have you seen in your 43 years? When we first came to Gisborne there wasn’t

What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I’ve been here for 43 years. I came here in 1973, so I’ve seen lots and lots of changes. My three sons were all born at the Gisborne Bush Nursing Hospital, and they were educated at the local primary school and the secondary school. My husband and I had our own business locally – a garage Museum Motors. But that land was bought to put in the Calder freeway – we’ve been retired for about 16 years now.

even a supermarket – there wasn’t even a supermarket in Sunbury. There was a tiny little corner store in Sunbury. I don’t like that it’s getting bigger so fast, I can see it rapidly becoming more suburbia – but never mind, you can’t stop progress. We’re going to be a suburb of Melbourne in the next 20 years. It was a beautiful place

to bring up children. They weren’t city kids but they weren’t country kids. I think it’s country-atmosphere still, which I like. And it’s a fairly safe area. The saddest thing is when I go down the street now I don’t know anybody. And years ago, you knew everybody. My husband keeps saying that when he sees

the first set of traffic lights, we’re leaving. But whether we will or not I don’t know. Do you have a favourite place to visit in the area? There’s just so many beautiful areas around. I really love it up the mount. I even like going up there in winter and rugging up.

s Thi explains, growing up in a “low socio-economic environment”, dental care was often only sought when severe pain forced a visit. “There was no empathy, we were not talked to,” she says. “I was often reduced to tears as a child and the experience remained with me for life. There was real fear there.” Driven by those formative experiences, Thi spent years crafting her vision, one where empathy, service and care are a focus, so no one has to go through what she did, at least while in her care. t feels worlds away from hustle and bustle of suburbia and city life, yet has everything you want in a special night out: great service, fantastic food and a warm atmosphere. “I love it, been going there for years”, “lovely food, great service and a beautiful environment” and “a great venue for a family party” are just some of the customer reviews found online. The property, surrounded by open spaces with four separate function rooms and the main restaurant, is the vision of Tuscan-born Lorenzo Galli who came to Australia in the 1950s. Venue manager Rebecca Dietz says Galli Restaurant offers a range of dining options including a la carte and light lunches in a relaxing vineyard atmosphere. “We host corporate events quite regularly as well as birthdays, christenings, weddings and engagements,” she says. The venue has a 34-person capacity function room, two 42 capacity rooms and the largest, an 84 capacity function room. “We often have clients book multiple rooms for larger events. Two of our rooms have courtyards overlooking the vineyards, which is really picturesque,” Rebecca says. “Locals, once they discover us, tend to come back again and again. You can have a nice date night not too far from home, feel like you’ve gotten away from it all but you

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir relaxes with succulent seafood and sweets... Since its early days, covered by us here, one of the loveliest things to observe about Fig & Walnut in Seddon is what a relaxed and lovely retreat it has become. It all fits with relaxing ease – including the superb garden area outside. Fig & Walnut has become one of our regulars, for coffee mostly and sweet treats, with the occasional more hefty meal included. So we’re only too happy to accept Vera’s invitation (see full disclosure below) to take her new menu for a spin. New menu? Perversely, I ignore it and go for one of the revolving specials – Brazilian seafood soup ($17). With its sprigs of coriander, I firstly think this is going to be a dish with an Asian bent. But, no, this seems firmly in the Mediterranean mold despite its South American attribution. The sensational foundation is a tomato-based broth that is extremely deep in flavour – it’s simply brilliant. In it are blobs of fresh tomato and red capsicum. In it, too, is generous bounty of seafood – medium-size prawns of superb, large-size flavour; pipis and mussels; and several nice chunks of barramdundi. This is high-quality seafood cooking, especially given the price. Danya’s vegan bowl ($19) is a bit of an odd choice for us, but we like it a lot anyway.

At its base are a heap of cold noodles and a fine house-made satay sauce, abetted by bok choy and eggplant. Even the pumpkin, normally a no-go area for us, plays a handy role by being so tender that it seems to become part of an extended dressing/ sauce, with chilli shavings adding just the right amount of zing. Fig & Walnut is a sweet treat haven, though it takes a different tack to most places by putting the accent on an oft-changing range of smaller offerings instead of a line-up of regular cakes. For example, classic almond crescents. We’ve all had them before – but rarely are they of such crumbly freshness and lemon-scented joy. (Consider The Sauce dined at Fig & Walnut as guests of management. No money changed hands. Our food was a mix of items chosen by management and mains chosen by CTS and guests. Fig & Walnut management did not seek any editorial input into this story.) SPORT Blistering start sets Diggers Rest up for stunning win A mammoth opening quarter set up a huge win for Diggers Rest’s netballers as they consolidated their place in the Riddell Football Netball League top six on Saturday. Taking on Woodend-Hesket, the Burras shot out of the blocks with 27 goals from 30 shots in the first period to open up a game-winning 20-goal lead. They continued on their merry way after the first break to secure an 82-40 victory. Diggers Rest coach Amy Carroll said her side’s performance was close to perfection. “I think that’s the best I’ve seen us play,’ she said. “You would say a 15-goal quarter is a good one, so to nearly double that was outstanding from us. “It was really great for us to have that big first quarter, because our starts are something we’ve really been working on. “It dinted their confidence … they were still a strong team, but it’s hard to come back from that.”

Carroll bagged 16 goals from as many shots in the early rout, while the return of Natasha Chokljat to the centre gave the transition play of the Burras real potency. The Burras extended their lead at every change, grabbing a further 19 goals in the second term and 22 in the third to continue the blitz. The bulging scoreline gave Carroll the chance to experiment with her line-up, something she hopes will stand the side in good stead come finals time. “We tried some different things, and I think that’s a real positive – that we could still play well with those changes,” Carroll said. “It’s good to have that flexibility to change depending on how we’re playing and who we’re playing. “It’s good for our confidence. I know our whole team is good enough to match it with those top teams – it’s just about bringing it when we play them now and in the finals.” Elsewhere, Lancefield was too strong for

Rockbank, with the home side knocking off the Rams by 18 goals. While it was tight early, an 18-goal third quarter for Lancefield broke the game open as Jordan Furness collected 13 goals from 14 shots on her way to 31. Rockbank was able to compete well for three quarters, but could not stop the flow of goals from Lancefield’s attackers in the 54-36 loss. Sunbury Kangaroos came agonizingly close to its first win of the season, fading late in the game as it went down to Riddell. The Kangaroos held the lead at each of the quarter breaks and were seven goals up at half-time, but let the game slip in the final term as Riddell stormed home to win 43-40. Ewen McRae

Burras ride wind to top By Ewen McRae Diggers Rest has climbed to equal top of the Riddell District Football League ladder following a grinding win at Woodend Hesket at Bloomdale Oval on Saturday. The split round gave Diggers Rest the chance to draw level with Rupertswood and Macedon ahead of their clash this weekend, and the Burras adjusted well to difficult conditions to come away with a 13.11 (89)-6.6 (42) win. With a howling gale blowing to one end, it was not a game for football purists, but Burras coach Shaun Sims was happy to get the right result for his side. “It was a tough day for football to be honest,” Sims said. “It was an old-school Diggers Day, really hard to move the ball and score, and I thought we played quite well under the circumstances.” Woodend Hesket had the wind for the first quarter and, while the home side Burras started the better with the first two goals, it was the visiting Hawks who got on a roll and held a 14-point lead at quarter-time. But when their turn came with the wind, the Burras didn’t waste their opportunity and flipped that deficit to go into the long break with a 34-point lead. Lachlan Langford was particularly potent, with three goals in the second term to guide the hosts to a position of strength. Kicking into the wind in the third term, the Burras turned to some Hollywood tactics, putting the majority of their players behind the bounce and running the ball forward with a ‘flying V’ to great effect. It did the trick for the home side as they went goal for goal with the Hawks to hold their lead, then stretch out to the final margin in the last quarter. After enduring a raft of injuries to key players, and some up-and-down form over the past month, Sims said to be sitting level with Rupertswood and Macedon was a good sign. “We’re building quite well towards finals, and some people won’t see that, but I’m confident when we’ve got a full team on the park we’ll be as good as anyone,” Sims said. “I think it’s the most open season I’ve ever seen, and if you’re not matching the opposition with your intent on the day then you’re in trouble. When we played Macedon two weeks ago we butchered the ball at times, but without a doubt that is the hardest I’ve seen us try for three years and we got the win. “So the positive thing for us is we know our best is as good as anyone, but when we miss that last 10 per cent we’re just an ordinary team, and our guys are starting to realise that.”

Kyneton scored an impressive and important win over Sandhurst to go a game clear in fifth on the Bendigo Football League ladder at the weekend. With both sides going into the game on seven wins, Kyneton got the jump on its opponents to open up a 28-point lead at half-time before eventually prevailing 13.10 (88) -10.7 (67). Gisborne stuck with Strathfieldsaye for the first quarter but could not match its opponents’ fire power over the course of the game. While Gisborne trailed by just one goal at the first break, the final margin of 23.12 (150)-8.11 (59) showed the gap between the two sides.

Gisborne fell to a disappointing 3-0 loss in its clash with Lara United at the weekend. With both sides sitting on six wins on the state league 5 west ladder going into the contest, a tight game looked assured, but it was Lara that had the greater attacking weapons as Gisborne failed to trouble the scorers. In other games, Kyneton Districts remain precariously placed near the relegation places following its 14th loss from 16 rounds. Kyneton was always going to be hard pressed to take points away from second-placed Melbourne Uni and two goals in the first half were enough to consign the Districts to a loss.

Rugby league

Sunbury Tigers have consolidated their place inside the NRL Victoria first grade top four with a tight win over Doveton on Saturday. With the Tigers just one game ahead of the Steelers going into the round, the 18-16 win was an important one for the home side. The Tigers and fourth-placed Northern Thunder are two games clear inside the top four in the run towards finals. After getting through the round unscathed on the injury front, Sims said the week off would do his side the world of good in the run towards finals. “We’re happy to be flying under the radar a bit, and the bye will definitely help to get a

few guys fit and back in the team,” he said. “Michael Evans will come back next week, Stuart Clarke will be close, Taylor Hine will be close, so we’re going to get some very handy footballers back and we’ll look to build from there.”

Cannons find form at right time By Ewen McRae Calder Cannons may have won just their fourth game of the season last week, but they remain firmly in the hunt for a TAC Cup finals berth. With the evenness of the competition coming to the fore more than ever before this year, the Cannons are now just percentage adrift of the top eight, and two games away from a home final with five games to play. Calder coach Andrew Johnston said the side was seeing the benefits of finding some form as the season has gone on. “We struggled a bit early on, probably only one win in the first half of the year,” Johnston said. “But the last couple of months have been a lot better, and the whole competition is about improving and that’s come through for us in recent times. “It now gives us an opportunity to maybe sneak into the eight, the sides aren’t far ahead of us now, but we can’t really look too far past Oakleigh in the next game.” The final game before the bye gave fans a chance to see what the Cannons were capable of, running over the top of top four side Murray

Sunbury courts minor premiership

New faces ready to Roar Sunbury Cricket Club’s new coach Dylan Wright says there is a clean slate at the club heading into summer, and the Roar is looking to go one better than recent runner-up seasons. Sunbury, which has played in four of the past five grand finals but missed out on the silverware each time, will hit the new season with some big on-field changes, and Wright said it was an exciting time to be taking the reins after playing last season in Wodonga. “I’m a Sunbury boy, played most of my cricket at Sunbury United, but these are the premier facilities in the comp so it felt like a good fit after moving back into the area,” Wright said. “Coaching felt like a natural progression, being 29-years-old and having played cricket for a long time, and when the job came up and I spoke to a few people I got really excited about the possibilities.” Wright played for Sunbury United for 10 seasons, beating Sunbury in the McIntyre Cup final in his final game there, and has also spent time at Premier Cricket club North Melbourne (now Greenvale), and Wodonga, where he won another premiership. Wright will have to cover the loss of gun all-rounder Jason McGann this season, but he said it could prove to be a blessing in disguise for the side. “Clubs always evolve and we will find a way of covering Jason,” Wright said. “In a way I think the club has maybe relied on too few, which can bring you unstuck in big finals. If we can get six people contributing more often than not, rather than one or two huge standouts, I think that will help us in the long run. “They’ve played in four grand finals in recent years so the foundations are there and you don’t need to change much. “I’m big on promoting the juniors too so we will look to do that.” The club has already added bowler Jason McGowan and all-rounder Steven Maitland to their squad, with more to be announced in the coming months. The club will kick off its pre-season on August 6.

Sunbury kept its chances of claiming the Big V Championship women’s minor premiership alive at the weekend, proving far too strong for Waverley on Sunday. Coming off the bye, the Jets looked fresher and faster than their second-placed opponents as they controlled the play on the way to a 75-58 win. Star Jets guard Monique Stevens said the benefits of the bye were crucial when looking back on the result. “We had two really good training sessions this week, and after having the bye and freshening up some bodies, that was really important,” Stevens said. “We had some players with some niggly injuries that we could get right and it was a big defensive game for us and we really controlled the momentum from the opening.” With Waverley boasting a number of taller opponents, the Jets used their smaller line-up to great effect by getting the ball inside and then getting it back outside the perimeter to create a swag of three-point shots. Sunbury threw up 33 attempts from beyond the ring compared to their opponents’ 14, and while only 11 of those 33 shots scored, it was a crucial attacking weapon that gave Sunbury an edge over the Falcons. Orla O’Reilly played 40 strong minutes for the Jets and came away with a game-high 23 points, while Karen Duever and Stevens each added 18 points to the cause. Alex Darby was also good off the bench with nine points in seven minutes of court time. Stevens said after a number of close games it was good to see her side put their foot down as the game went on to make sure of the result and give the Jets a percentage boost. “This game was really important in deciding whether we can finish on top or not, so to get the win will make us very favourable to get that.” Sunbury will close its season against Eltham and Warrandyte this weekend, with Stevens confident her side can make an impact in the finals. “Hopefully we can get one of those top spots and prepare for the finals with a bye week which would be nice.” Ewen McRae

Johnstone said there were a number of players he believed would be picked up in either the national or rookie drafts in November, chief among them Noah Balta, who is predicted to go high. “His [Balta] athletic ability is very good, and he can play up forward, down back, and in the ruck so his versatility is very high,” Johnston said. “He’s a sensational player, so if he’s not picked in the top 20 then recruiters don’t know what they’re talking about. “Guys like Brad Bernacki, with his contested ball winning and leadership, stand out to be at least rookied, and Aidan Tilley as a 19-year-old has really come on this year and we think he’s got the pedigree to handle AFL. “And then there’s Mitch Podhajski who played Vic Metro and showed his run and defensive attributes against South Australia, and has shown he can go forward with us so he’s versatile too.” Calder Cannons will resume their season against ladder leaders Oakleigh this Saturday.

Sunbury super goal snags win By Ewen McRae Sunbury United continued on its winning ways on Saturday with a magic moment securing a stirring victory over Epping City. On a difficult day for pretty play, United grabbed its fifth win from its past seven games with a miracle strike in the 90th minute to move up to eighth on the state league three north-west ladder. United coaching director Greg Czaprik said it was good to take the full points. â€œIt was fantastic to get the result because game-wise it was very, very scrappy,â€? Czaprik said. â€œThe wind was blowing an absolute gale across the ground, so it didnâ€™t favour anybody and made for a pretty ordinary game to watch.â€? Czaprik was delighted by the manner of the win and the clean sheet that went with it. While neither side was able to create a meaningful chance on goal for close to the full game, a moment of brilliance from the Mwarabu brothers was able to break the deadlock. David Mwarabu found his brother, Djafari, in space about 25 metres from goal, with the striker pinging a shot into the top corner of the goal for the winner. The shot was so good, the Epping City goalkeeper didnâ€™t move. The United players held on for four minutes of stoppage time to grab the win and deliver Epping just its third loss from 16 games. â€œEpping are well structured and experienced,

so it was a game we needed our guys to really stand up in,â€? Czaprik said. â€œI think if that game had been played in the first half of the season, we probably wouldnâ€™t have won it. â€œRealistically, it was a game that no one should have won â€Ś it took a moment of brilliance for us to take the win, which shows how far weâ€™ve come. â€œWeâ€™re more physical now, weâ€™re more wary, and I think they believe in themselves a bit more.â€? That belief has come from a strong run of form in which United knocked Brimbank from the top of the ladder last week and will be needed against fourth-placed La Trobe University this weekend. Czaprik said the side was looking to continue its move up the table with five rounds remaining. â€œWeâ€™re on a roll at the moment,â€? he said. â€œI think if we can take this sort of form into the last games of the season, I think weâ€™ll be safe from relegation â€Ś weâ€™re climbing and bridging the gap to the sides above us. â€œIf we can keep this momentum going for the rest of the season, I think weâ€™ll set ourselves up for a really positive 2018. â€œWhen we play our best football and itâ€™s our day, there is not a team that can match us.â€?
