Police chase car clue By Serena Seyfort Pass through the township of Mount Macedon on an ordinary day and you’re likely to see locals walking their dogs, someone doing a bit of gardening and some native wildlife. The rural town is known for its impressive gardens and spectacular autumn leaves – the busiest it tends to get is when tourists come to marvel at the seasonal natural attractions. But the discovery of a body in bushland in February this year has put the peaceful town at the centre of an extensive manhunt. Last week Victoria Police search and rescue squad, State Emergency Services and missing persons squad detectives conducted a new search in Mount Macedon after fresh information came to light in the murder of Avondale Heights woman Karen Ristevski.

The crews combed Childers Road, Mount Macedon Road, Waterfalls Road and Salisbury Road, following the route detectives believe may have been taken by whoever hid Ms Ristevski’s body. “Everybody’s shocked when it’s so close to home,” resident Helen Elliott said. “Everyone feels safe up here … Many people – myself included – walk in isolated spots.” Ms Ristevski’s body was found in the Macedon Regional Park on February 20, seven months after she went missing on June 29. A witness this week told police they saw a lone man standing next to a black Mercedes, similar to one driven by Ms Ristevski, parked on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Childers Road and Mount Macedon Road at about noon on June 29 last year. Speaking at Childers Road last Thursday, Detective Inspector Tim Day said: “the importance of this sighting can’t be overstated”. “The witness has articulated this sighting prior to the discovery of Karen’s body. The witness could not have known the location of Karen’s body at the time of calling us.” Investigators are urging anyone who may have been in Mount Macedon, particularly near Macedon Regional Park, Mt Macedon Golf Club, Mount Macedon Road, Salisbury Road, Waterfalls Road, Childers Road and Loche Road on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, and who may have seen a black Mercedes Benz SLK to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Reptiles found in speaker: court By Serena Seyfort A Gisborne man has been found guilty of reptile smuggling after Italian customs discovered live Australian lizards inside a speaker. Craig James Pender has been fined $2000 and convicted for illegally exporting Australian reptiles and for unlawfully importing and possessing exotic reptiles. A joint investigation by the federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, the federal Department of the Environment and Energy and the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water
and Planning into the smuggling was sparked when Italian customs intercepted 13 native Australian reptiles in May, 2013. Five blue-tongued lizards, four spiny tailed skinks and four shingleback lizards were found hidden in socks, concealed within an audio speaker. A subsequent raid at Mr Pender’s property found three illegally imported hognosed snakes, said the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources acting head of compliance Robyn Cleland. “Our investigation also identified links between Mr Pender and a person of interest
in Norway – Bard Alexander Meringen – ultimately leading to the arrest of Mr Meringen for wildlife crimes and seizure of over 200 live reptiles at his residence in Norway,” Dr Cleland said. “Mr Pender’s irresponsible actions placed our national wildlife, environment and industries at great risk. Exotic animals can introduce devastating pests and diseases to Australia.” Mr Pender faced Kyneton Magistrates Court on July 4. Site for sore eyes for men’s shed The final piece of the puzzle is in place for the construction of Kyneton’s new men’s shed. After more than a two-year search, Kyneton Men’s Shed has secured a spot overlooking the Campaspe River. Chairman John Mitchell said finding the site, located between Riverwalk Boulevard and Bupa Aged Care, was a huge relief. “Late last year we had almost given up hope of ever getting land,” Mr Mitchell. “It means we’ve now got certainty and it means we’ll have one of the best men’s sheds in Australia.”
“The new shed will be almost twice the size of the existing shed.” Plans for the new building include a library, kitchen, meeting room and large workshop, with raised vegetable gardens to be included in the landscaping. Mr Mitchell said the group hoped construction would start before the end of the year. The land has been provided by Bupa, which has also offered to match the shed’s contribution to the build. Mr Mitchell said Bupa would put $100,000 into the construction. The state government
has contributed $60,000 and grants have been provided by Cobaw Community Health, local businessman Noel Henderson and artist Daniel Butterworth. The men’s group has almost finished fundraising for the remaining balance. The men’s shed organisation was set up as an informal setting to advise and improve the overall health of all males. The Kyneton shed has been operating since 1997, and is the second oldest men’s shed in Australia.
Local emergency services and VicRoads are urging drivers to beware of black ice. July and August are typically when black ice is most prevalent on roads, warned Gisborne CFA community safety co-ordinator Tom Ruff. “We’re coming up to what is normally the worst period,” Mr Ruff said. Black ice, a transparent coating of ice on a road surface, is particularly common in the Macedon Ranges. Mr Ruff said he hadn’t attended a black ice incident this year, but had “been to heaps” in his time with the CFA. He warned drivers to look for black ice on the roads throughout winter – not just after rainfall. “Black ice is formed by frozen moisture, so it can appear even if it’s just been a bit damp and there’s been dew,” Mr Ruff said. If caught in black ice, he advised drivers to “drive slowly, don’t try and break or accelerate suddenly.” Mr Ruff said drivers should drive with caution, check VicRoads for warnings and alert VicRoads if black ice is spotted. Last Wednesday morning VicRoads alerted drivers via social media that black ice had been detected on the Calder Freeway in Woodend. “Headlights on, slow down and brake gently,” advised a post on Twitter. An 18-year-old man has been charged after allegedly driving at more than 200km/h on the Calder Freeway last Monday. A police helicopter tracked the BMW coupe through Woodend and Kyneton after a member of the public reported seeing the vehicle travelling at high speeds in Macedon about 2pm. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol clocked the car allegedly driving at 218km/h just north of Malmsbury. The driver pulled over after a short chase. The Preston man was bailed to appear at Kyneton Magistrates’ Court on August 21.

Hooplah from Houston Former professional basketballer Remi Yusuf, from Houston, Texas, joined about 30 Sunbury residents to shoot some hoops last week. Yusuf came to Sunbury’s Boardman Stadium to host a free basketball clinic for people with disabilities as part of his not-for-profit Be a 9th Wonder Foundation. Joanne Randall, manager of Sunbury disability service provider Distinctive Options, co-ordinated the session and described it as “brilliant”. “Everyone just had an amazing day – the smiles on their faces said it all,” she said.
Ms Randall said Yusuf had mentored her son, Gisborne’s James Cimbaljevic, who is on a basketball scholarship in the US. Ms Randall accommodated Yusuf and American trainer Jamie Barnett, who travelled especially from New York to run the clinic. The players were joined in mentoring the participants by Cimbaljevic and Woodend’s Lukanda Tezigwa, who has also been studying in the United States on a basketball scholarship. Serena Seyfort
In the July 4 edition of Star Weekly, an article titled ‘Council pay a ‘bargain’’ stated that Macedon Ranges councillor salaries had increased by 20.9 per cent. This figure was incorrect. The council approved a 2.5 per cent increase in allowances. Plan wants dogs begone
By Serena Seyfort Customer service staff who find themselves emotionally supporting their clients can access their own form of help. Occasional Counselling is a free service on offer to staff in frontline roles, such as hairdressers and bartenders, who often hear their customers’ dilemmas and challenging circumstances. “It’s a support network for people who support the community,” said Bruce Howard, owner of Sunbury’s the Angry Butcher Bike Shop and a Sunbury Business Association member.

Mr Howard initiated the Occasional Counselling program after hearing retailers say that stories from customers – sometimes of extreme hardship, grief, and even domestic violence – often left them wondering what they should do. He said service staff often build rapport with customers who then feel comfortable sharing personal stories. Occasional Counselling sessions would help those staff point their customers in the direction to seek assistance from professionals with relevant skills. They also support the mental health and wellbeing of service staff who can become burdened by exposure to other’s issues. Mr Howard said he hoped the sessions would give participants the confidence to pass on advice about seeking the next step.
“Sometimes in the retail world, we take it all on board,” Mr Howard said. “We all want to help, but sometimes the helpers get worn out.” Mr Howard said he was motivated to start the program as a way of giving back to the community which he said has supported him

Man’s best friend could soon be banned from Mount Gisborne Reserve. A trial of the Macedon Ranges’ first “no dogs” site at the reserve is proposed in the council’s draft Domestic Animal Plan 2017-2021. It follows a petition from the Friends of Mount Gisborne Nature Reserve calling for the reserve to be declared as a “no dogs” reserve. Signed by 58 people, the petition argues that “the presence of dogs even on leads poses a threat to the wellbeing” of the reserve’s native animals. It identifies Mount Gisborne Reserve as “the only nature conservation zone in the area,” home to “eastern grey kangaroos, black wallabies, koalas, sugar gliders, brush-tailed phascogales, echidnas, blue tongue lizards and copperhead snakes”. Council adopted the petition at its May meeting. Community safety acting manager Michael Dyt said the Domestic Animal Plan aimed “to support pet owners, while protecting our natural environment and promoting the health and social benefits of responsible pet ownership”. The plan also intends to enable pet owners to register their dogs and cat s online by next year. Mr Dyt encouraged residents to provide feedback on the draft Domestic Animal Plan. Riddells Creek Senior Citizens are thrilled with the renovated Riddells Creek Community Centre. The group’s president Margaret Hutchinson said members are hoping even more of the community can enjoy the new surrounds – either by hiring out the centre or joining the seniors’ group. “We would just love to see it used more by the community,” Ms Hutchinson said. “The gardens and the whole centre has been upgraded.” She invited anyone to pop in and see the new facilities. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? My family moved up here just before I started primary school. I’ve lived here for, dare I say, about 57 years. I went to the local primary school, I went to Kyneton High School. My family started a nursery up the top of Mount Macedon about 1965. It closed in 1978 and I started my own nursery in 1980.

I joined the Mount Macedon Horticultural Society when I was 10 years old and I’ve been its president since I was 19. Anything horticultural around the area I’ve been involved in. I helped with street tree plantings up here after the Ash Wednesday bushfire. I got involved with the Gisborne Botanic Gardens and have been president of the Gisborne Botanic Gardens Friends group for donkey’s years. When we went through the big drought period, some of the local councillors decided it would be a good idea to let the struggling oak trees on Macedon’s Honour Avenue die – and then we could replace them with eucalypts. I led the campaign to save the trees. I helped with planting at Macedon railway station and around the community health centre in Gisborne.
If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I would try to stop the suburbanisation that’s been happening all around. I have no issue with progress, but I think sometimes progress is put in place for the sake of it and not because it creates a better environment. I remember some time ago I got a letter from council asking where I would like more street lights. I think I wrote back and said: “Are you mad? We don’t need any more.”
You’ve also shared your love of nature beyond the Macedon Ranges area. Tell us a bit about your role in the media? I was host of ABC’s Gardening Australia for three years. In fact, most of the filming I did for the program was done in my own garden in Macedon. I’ve also been on community radio for 30 years, I recently took over a radio slot in Bendigo and I’m also doing a radio show in Melbourne again (fortnightly with Hillary Harper on 774 on Saturday mornings).

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the most social spot in town . . . Sunshine Social is a hit and hoot, and we love it to bits. This is the biggest thing to hit Sunshine West for years – the adjacent Glengala Road shops barely seem to have changed for the best part of a decade. The old servo has been done up a treat, the swish fit-out preserving the old-time feel of the building and, best of all, the wonderful roof that once sheltered filling-up motorists from the elements. Loosely based on the concept of old-school charcoal chicken shops, Sunshine Social goes from there to offer a menu that broadens out to take in some multicultural ideas, all the while offering a cohesive game plan. Marinated olives and chargrilled vegetables ($7.50) are a delightful way to get our meal under way. It’s a deceptively big serving of beaut olives of various colours and dimensions and long strips of gorgeous red capsicum, zucchini and eggplant. Given the charcoal chook inspiration going on here, I was only ever going to order one thing – the very same thing that I ALWAYS order in chicken shops: Half a chicken with slaw and chips ($28.50). The price here is higher, of course, but no more than expected. The chicken near the various bones is excellent, moist and delicious. The breast meat is dry – as it so often is, no matter the price. But it’s not terminally so, and certainly all this could easily be fixed up with a small pot

The meat served with Nat’s order of “lamb shoulder with Mediterranean herbs” ($22.50 with one side) is tasty. But we are both surprised the sheep meat is sliced and more like your regular lamb roast than the fall-apart epic the phrase “lamb shoulder” automatically suggests to us. The no-hesitation thumbs-up of the night goes to Bennie’s fried chicken burger ($13.50). He loves the big, succulent, crisp chunk of fried chicken and gives his burger – abetted by slaw, cheese and jalapenos – an eight out of 10. He gets chips with his sandwich and an extra order of slaw on the side that is plenty big enough for both himself and Nat. On the basis of community reaction and our experience just a few days into its life, the place will endure and then some. And next time, we may expand our ordering horizons to the likes of pork ribs, grilled calamari, a range of meat on sticks or Moroccan lamb snags. Another strong shooting display from Amy Carroll was enough to give Diggers Rest a good win over Riddell in the Riddell District Football Netball League on Saturday. In an important game for both sides in the context of finals places, Diggers produced two dominant quarters to sew up the points and open up a two-game buffer on Riddell inside the top six. Carroll was instrumental all day for the visiting side, shooting 34 goals to lead all comers in the 61-43 win for the Burras. The first quarter showed no signs of the scoring onslaught that was to come, as the two sides traded blows and Diggers established a three-goal lead at quarter-time. But the second term blew the game open, as Diggers extended their lead with a 19-10 run – Carroll scoring ten goals from her 11 shots.
While Riddell was able to stem the flow in the third as the two sides scored 12 goals each, another 18 goals to the visiting Burras in the final term put the result beyond doubt. Diggers Rest now sits firmly in sixth place on the ladder, while Riddell will have to make up two games plus percentage in the last four games to play a part in the finals. Elsewhere, Macedon maintained its hold on top spot and an unbeaten season with a hard fought victory over Rupertswood. In a real arm wrestle, neither side led by more than three goals all day as Macedon ground its way to a 31-29 win. In such a tight contest it came down to which side would take its chances, and while Rupertswood had the better shooting percentage (86 to 82), the extra four shots that Macedon was able to create proved crucial.

Sunbury was blown away in the third quarter of its clash with Redan before eventually going down by 34-points on Saturday. With fifth-placed Sunbury just behind fourth-placed Redan on the table, there was plenty on the line for both sides, and the early going showed that as the game stayed tight. However six goals to one in the third term to Redan opened up a match-winning lead for the visiting side and it never looked back on its way to a 11.12 (78)-5.14 (44) victory. Alec Goodson kicked three goals for Sunbury to be among its best. The Lions still hold fifth spot, now two games behind Redan but still a game ahead of sixth-placed East Point.
By Ewen McRae Romsey put together one of its most complete performances of the Riddell District Football League season on Saturday, strangling Sunbury Kangaroos to take a crucial win. In a tightly congested top six, the two sides came into the contest on seven wins a piece and with just percentage separating sixth-placed Romsey from the fourth-placed Kangaroos. Following the 13.8 (86)-8.10 (58) win to the Redbacks at their home base, they now move up to fifth while Sunbury has slipped to seventh and a game out of the finals places. It was a result not lost on Romsey coach Corey Sullivan. “It was probably the best game we’ve played so far this year,” Sullivan said. “The loser of the game was going to be on the back foot and I think the Kangaroos have an easier run home than us so it was important for us to get the result. “We don’t have a great percentage so the reality for us is we just have to keep winning.” The two sides traded blows early, with Romsey locking down on the Kangaroos dangerous forwards and limiting the supply from the midfield to establish an 11-point quarter-time lead. That had been trimmed to eight points at the long break, but the Kangaroos would get no closer as the home side tightened up even more in defence and started to pepper its own goals in a match-winning term. The Kangaroos could manage just a solitary behind in the third quarter, and while Romsey kicked 2.6 at the other end, the Redbacks had complete control of the contest. Jack Jedwab was instrumental for the home side with five goals, but it was the evenness of contributions across the ground that stood out for Sullivan. “We knew Sunbury’s strengths were in the forward half of the ground, so we made sure we had out match-ups right there,” he said. “We backed ourselves to get the job done around the ground and to the boys’ credit everyone stood up. “That third quarter where we dominated without quite putting it on the scoreboard really set this win up, and everyone to a man really did their bit.” Sullivan said his side was confident of first securing a finals spot and then having an impact once September rolled around. “We’re definitely confident that if the opportunity comes our way in finals that we can give a good account of ourselves,” he said. “We’ve got a young list, but once they run out there’s no birth certificates out there and they just do the job. Everyone has stood up so far which is a good sign.”

Woodend-Hesket took the fight up to third-placed Lancefield, but ultimately fell short late in the game. With just one win for the season it looked like a mismatch on paper, but the Hawks led by a goal at quarter-time and trailed by just one at the half to give their supporters some hope. However, Lancefield’s class shone through after the long break as Jordan Furness brought her side to life with 22 goals from 23 shots in the second half to take the win 59-43. Romsey took the points over Sunbury Kangaroos by virtue of a forfeit, with the Redbacks still in second on the table

Weightman was unstoppable all day as he grabbed his best tally of the season to move to 72 goals in 12 games and extending his lead on the goal kicking leaderboard. However, the 21.26 (152)-7.8 (50) win was not the biggest of the round as Gisborne destroyed Kangaroo Flat with a 27.15 (177)-4.7 (31) triumph. Eight unanswered goals in the first term set up the win with Tristan James (seven goals) and Jake Conolan (six) having a big say in the outcome.

It was a result that gave United four wins from their past six games and showed the club was on the right path with it’s youth policy, according to club director Dan Moore. “I think the side goes out every week and plays with a no fear attitude and that youthful exuberance that they can beat anyone,� Moore said. “There’s always a positive vibe with this side and they know that if they play to their strengths then they can beat anyone. “In recent weeks I think there’s a new sense of resolve within the group and a never-give-up attitude, which was lacking at the start of the year but is shining through in games now.� United were first onto the scoresheet as they surprised the home side with a scrappy goal to striker Jayden Mercieca in the 19th minute, only to see the Stallions answer just two minutes later to level the scores. Brimbank would score again in the 27th minute, and it looked like the ladder-leaders were starting to assert control, taking the lead into half-time. United coach Lino Grech told his side that they had already shown they could match it with the Stallions by holding the lead early in the game, and when Mercieca headed home his second from a long range free kick in the 57th minute the young Sunbury side started to believe.

Djafari Mwarabu gave United the lead for the second time with a well timed strike from 20 metres out just after the hour mark, and blasted home his second when his brother David set him up in the 71st minute. Brimbank had some good chances to score early in the second half, but once the scores were levelled again it was all United.
Moore said the message from the coaching staff to the side after the game was simple. “Look what happens when we play together as a team, that was the biggest message out of the game,� Moore said. “I think when we play like that we are a match for anyone in the league.� Looking at the big picture, Moore said the result would send a message to the rest of the
competition that United were no longer a team to be walked over. “I think it makes other team’s take notice,� he said. “We’ve had a little spell of picking up some good results, and we’ve now just beat the top team, and people will take notice and realise that we’re not a pushover for anyone.�
