Playing it up for new park It’s been years in the making, but Kyneton Community Park is open. Three years after the formation of the Kyneton Community Park Committee, president Amy Cockroft said that what they had been able to achieve left her “heart full with pride”. “This park is so special,” Ms Cockroft said. “A need was identified by the Kyneton community for a space like this … the community demanded a park that it deserved.” Located in the Kyneton Botanic Gardens, the park celebrates Kyneton’s heritage and historic location. The playspace features a ropes course, fence maze and basket swing nestled among the natural environment. A permanent table tennis table, more picnic and barbecue facilities and toilets will be added in the coming months. An art piece by renowned Taungurung artist Mick Harding will also be installed, along with a Welcome to Country sign. The park is the result of an “enormous amount of planning, consultation, design work, marketing, negotiation and relationship building”, according to Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson who spoke at the official opening last month. Cash splash for Sunbury By Serena Seyfort Sunbury residents are the big winners in Hume council’s “biggest ever spend on infrastructure”. Funding for a global learning centre, warm water pool at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre and a multi-million dollar overhaul of McMahon Recreation Reserve have been included in the council’s 2017-18 budget. The council recently signed off on the $79.8 million budget and the 2017-2021 Council Plan. Mayor Drew Jessop said the budget was the

council’s “biggest ever spend on infrastructure” and offered “some really significant investments in Sunbury”. “There are some really positive, big-ticket assets coming to Sunbury over the next two to three years,” Cr Jessop said. “It will be an interesting time for Sunbury people.” In the next year, $7.5 million will be spent on the $19 million Hume Global Learning Centre on Macedon Street, next to Sunbury’s existing library. Building is expected to start early next

year and the centre should be open in the 2018-19 financial year. Cr Jessop said the centre, which will provide spaces for study, library services, exhibitions, conference and meeting areas would be a great addition to the town. “Similar ones that have been built in Broadmeadows and Craigieburn have had significant impacts.” The council has allocated $1.6 million to start the $4.1 million Sunbury McMahon Recreation Reserve master plan which will

include extending the building, construction of a playground, second oval, carpark and netball court. And $1.1 million will go towards building a warm water pool for rehabilitation and exercise this year as part of the $4.07 million Sunbury aquatic centre upgrade. The pool is expected to open to the public in mid-2018. After public feedback, the council’s final budget included more funding for Sunbury’s Christmas on the Green Festival and the StreetLife Festival.

Sunbury line needs quicker fix By Serena Seyfort The Sunbury train line is at breaking point. In its 2016 Strategic Operational Plan, Metro warns the state government that there is an urgent need to “develop a solution” for the line, one of three it says on which peak hour capacity is regularly breached. Metro has proposed running trains directly to Flinders Street or Southern Cross stations – bypassing the city loop – more often in peak hours as a way to squeeze more out of

the straining rail network. The Sunbury line shares a city loop tunnel with the Craigieburn and Upfield lines. All three are experiencing increasing overcrowding. While Sunbury will be one of the lines removed from the city loop as part of the government’s $11 billion Metro Tunnel project, freeing up capacity, the tunnel is not planned to open for almost a decade. Metro has urged the government to make smaller investments in the short term to lessen peak hour crowds and disruption.

Sunbury Train Association member Paul Campbell, who commutes daily from Sunbury to the city for work, said reform was overdue. “We don’t have enough frequent services,” Mr Campbell said. “There have been times when I’ve missed the train because it has been too full – and I’ve heard of it happening to other people.” Mr Campbell said it was particularly hard to access Sunbury trains from the city loop because many suburban commuters were using the line to reach Sunshine.

“The trains are packed, but then most get off at Sunshine and the train is half empty,” he said. Mr Campbell said, with a laugh, that he “could be retired” by the time the Metro Tunnel was in use. “We need more services across the board,” he said. Census reveals religious shift Religious preferences in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury are contributing to a shift in Victoria’s religious affiliations. In the Macedon Ranges, 37 per cent of people do not consider themselves as belonging to a religion, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Census results. This marks a significant increase on the figures of 2011, when 28.7 per cent of residents identified as having no religion. In Sunbury, 32.5 per cent of people said they did not follow a religion in last year’s census, up from 23.3 per cent in 2011. Not identifying with a religion was the dominant preference in both areas and is now Victoria’s leading preference at 29.6 per cent. Catholicism reigned as the state’s dominant religion back in 2011. It’s now placed second in Macedon Ranges (25.5 per cent) and Sunbury (30.8 per cent) – both exceeding the 22.6 per cent of Victorians who identify as Catholic. The 2016 census also revealed that the average Macedon Ranges resident is a 42-year-old married female who was born in Australia and speaks only English. Sunbury’s typical resident has the same characteristics, but is a little younger at 37. Italian is the language used by one per cent of Sunbury residents and 0.7 per cent of Macedon Ranges residents.

Taking on cancer, one lap at a time Ms Tuner said experiences close to home fuelled her desire to continue to raise funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services – her mother won a fight with bowel cancer 21 years ago; in 2014 her father died from oesophageal cancer. “When it’s your parents it takes on a whole new meaning,” Ms Turner said. Founder and chairperson of Sunbury’s Relay For Life committee Shara Turner continues to pass on the spirit of celebrating and fundraising for those touched by cancer. Ms Turner and a friend started the Sunbury Relay For Life event in 2011 after years of travelling to Albert Park to join the relay event there. “Between the two of us, we took on seven committee roles to get it running,” she said of the Sunbury event. “I’ve been with it ever since. I can’t seem to walk away.”

Suburb’s growth alarms local When Trevor Dance moved to Sunbury in 1989, the population hovered around 15,000 and the local shire’s motto was “City Living, Country Style”. Today, Sunbury’s population has topped 39,000 and it’s not quite “the country” any more. “There were houses here back then, but nothing like the expansion we were seeing,” said Mr Dance, standing on the edge of a valley owned by the Catholic Church’s Salesian Society. The land will likely soon be carved up for housing. Two precinct plans to be considered in August by the Andrews government could add an estimated 55,000 residents to Sunbury. The hearings could result in swathes of grassland and bushland being redeveloped. As part of this, developer Villawood – which is working with the Salesians – was asked to pay $286,000 to “bring forward the facilitation of development of the land”. “This next bit takes it to a whole new level, where the city just can’t cope,” said Mr Dance, who is campaigning to stop Villawood’s development on a part of Sunbury known as Jackson’s Creek. Villawood’s Sherwood Heights development will include 400 homes, but more than 3000 people have signed an online petition demanding better protection for the area. The expansion of Sunbury is part of a wider population expansion: Victoria grew by 146,600 or 2.4 per cent in 2016, a much higher rate than

the Andrews government had planned for. And, according to Mr Dance, what’s happening in Sunbury to accommodate growth is a microcosm of what’s going on in Melbourne: housing arrives long ahead of the infrastructure. “They say the infrastructure is going to come, but it isn’t there for what’s here now, let alone what’s coming,” he said. “We don’t just want a sea of houses from Mount Macedon back to Melbourne, but that’s the way we are heading.”

Documents released to him by the Victorian Planning Authority under freedom-ofinformation laws show Villawood was asked to pay the government the $286,000 to provide it with staff to help rezone the land, along with three other developers. In total they were asked to provide funding of $650,000 as part of having their precinct structure plans considered, the documents show. A spokeswoman for the Victorian Planning Authority said these sorts of agreements were “a common practice that ensure developers are investing in reports required for precinct structure plans – and not just the taxpayer”. Similar agreements were in place for nearly all precinct structure plans being co-ordinated by the Victorian Planning Authority, she said. – The Age

Happy to call us home Caroline Richardson is one of 18 Macedon Ranges residents who will become Australian citizens this week. Born in England, Mrs Richardson, 87, moved to Gisborne in 2013 to be near her son, who works as an air traffic controller at Melbourne Airport. She said the area was the perfect fit for her. “It’s a lovely place to live,” she said. “There’s everything I need at my age.” She has moved between Australia and England since the 1970s, initially making the move around the world with her husband as part of his career. He died in 1983. Mrs Richardson, originally from Harefield

in England,says the village had a long-standing affiliation with Australia – Harefield House was used as the No.1 Australian Auxilliary Hospital during World War I. About 100 Australians who died in the hospital are buried in the village. Mrs Richardson said that every year Anzac Day was commemorated in the local church and school children placed posies in the cemetery. As winter slides to the halfway mark this week the cold weather is turning the Macedon Ranges into a white wonderland. July temperatures have fallen well below zero degrees, with the first weekend of July particularly icy. On the morning of July 1, Lancefield’s private weather station recorded -7 degrees, Woodend’s station reported -6.4 degrees and Kyneton’s just -5.4 degrees. Kyneton CFA issued a severe frost warning on Facebook, urging drivers to beware of black ice.

Locals also took to social media to share their icy tales, with many saying their car thermometers were reading as low as -8 degrees. Resident Michele Wansink witnessed the effects of a burst water main on Barringo Road in New Gisborne just before 8am on July 1. The burst main produced a spectacular scene as the water that escaped from the pipe formed icicles on nearby trees. Residents in Lancefield, Romsey, Woodend and Gisborne woke to find they had no running water because of frozen pipes. The winter snap reportedly froze over ponds, dams and even a dog’s water dish.

Sunbury’s not-for-profit community band has caught a big break. Naturally Cool Big Band, formerly Sunbury Big Band, has been selected to perform in Australia’s biggest live production of an Elvis show – the Elvis 40th Anniversary Memorial Concert. The 24 local musicians will take to the stage alongside other performers at Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday, July 15. One of the band’s saxophonists, Andrew McSwain, said the band members were “very excited”. “It’s the biggest opportunity our little band has ever had,” he said.

The big band started about eight years ago as a not-for-profit group to raise money for charity and performs five to six shows a year. The band was recommended to the Elvis show’s conductor, John St Peeters, following a performance at Sunbury Bowls Club last year. Made up of nine saxophonists, six trombonists, five trumpeters, three percussionists and a vocalist, the band rehearses once a week during the year and twice a week in the lead-up to shows. Man charged over spate of burglaries Police have charged a man after “an unusual increase” of home break-ins in Sunbury. Senior Constable Garry Holland from Hume Crime Investigation Unit said the number of robberies at residential properties in Sunbury during June and July was well above average. “It’s been an unusual increase,” Senior Constable Holland said. “Certainly above what I’ve seen.” Last Wednesday, properties in Ligar Street, Daly Close and Oxley Street were targeted. On July 1 and 2, five robberies occurred at properties on Batman Avenue, Mitchells Lane and Lawson Street. Senior Constable Holland said a search of a property last week recovered jewellery, foreign currency, collector coins, electrical items, drugs and cash, which police have identified as stolen property. A 30-year-old man has been charged with 23 offences. He appared before the Broadmeadows Magistrate Court last Thursday and was remanded to appear in court again on July 18. Police are trying to return the stolen belongings to their rightful owners.

Hats off to the chef Sunbury’s Kimberly Tang has cooked her way into the grand final of Australia’s longest-running culinary competition for the second time. The 20 year old will cook in front of a live audience at the final round of Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award in Sydney in September. Last week, Ms Tang and her teammate, Bridget Bottcher, aced the competition’s Victorian heat with their winning carrot lamb wellington, accompanied by caramelised onion sphere, fennel puree, zucchini stack, split sauce and a tomato lace wafer. Ms Tang said that competing in last year’s grand final only made her more determined. “Having competed last year I was hungry for more,” she said. “It was such a great experience – the exposure, networking opportunities, new skills I learned.”

Ms Tang works at Nobu restaurant in Crown. The young chef chose an apprenticeship with Crown over a university offer to study commerce after finishing her secondary school studies at Salesian College. “I thought it was better to start out as a chef when you’re younger,” she said. Ms Tang got into cooking at a young age, cooking for herself while her parents were at work. “They’d come home and find me in the kitchen,” she said She said her favourite cuisine to prepare was modern Australian food with French and Japanese influences, but the ingredients list for the final is yet to be released. The contest has been running for 52 years.

Parking alternatives sought By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges council is keen to encourage residents to alter their “car dependent” mindset. During discussion for an application to waiver the need for 34 carparking spaces for a new restaurant in Gisborne, councillor Mandy Mees said the council’s cycling infrastructure “should be front of mind”. The council approved the waiver, paving the way for a 100-seat restaurant to go ahead at a vacant building at 10 Robertson Street, Gisborne. At least four bike parking hoops will need to be installed near the restaurant’s Brantome Street entrance as a condition of approval. The council usually requires 40 carparks for a restaurant of such size. The applicant, Powerhouse Projects, provided a traffic engineering assessment that stated carparking demand for the restaurant would peak during the evening – after normal business hours. The assessment argued ample street parking existed after hours and proposed that restaurant customers could use carparking near the Coles supermarket. During discussion, Cr Mees spoke of a need to alter the “mindset of the community, which is currently very car dependent”. “Our planning scheme supports cycling infrastructure, that should be at front of mind,” she said. Mayor Jennifer Anderson agreed. “We do need to look at alternate ways,” Cr Anderson said. “We do need to stop doing carparking.” The parking waiver will expire if the restaurant closes or if the waiver is not used within two years.

Volunteers win op shop salute The celebration of Lancefield op shop’s 10th birthday last month paid tribute to its long-term volunteers. Opportunity Knocks has raised more than $368,000 since it opened at Lancefield Neighbourhood House a decade ago. And a group of 13 volunteers has been there every step of the way. They were each presented with lapel pins by Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas last month in recognition of their efforts. Life membership badges were also awarded to Caroline Middenway and Linda Davies – committee members of the neighbourhood house for 27 and 28 years, respectively. Money raised at Opportunity Knocks goes back to the local community. Over the years the op shop has contributed defibrillators to sports groups and community buildings, and has made donations to Lancefield Skate Park, Lancefield Primary School and St Mary’s Parish School. Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Vivien Philpotts said the organisation would be nothing without its volunteers. “The neighbourhood house and all of the programs … only happen because of the commitment of our volunteers,” she said. How did you come to teach in Romsey? I worked in Melbourne with the principals of Pas de Deux School of Dance, Kate and Lauren, in Melbourne. When they opened their school in Romsey, they asked me to come and teach. This is my second year teaching up here. I am so glad I have now been introduced to such a beautiful area of Victoria.

at Pas De Deux. I look forward to driving up from Melbourne every Monday. They are all so friendly and kind and come into class every week so enthusiastic and excited to learn something new. I haven’t explored the area beyond the school as much as I would like, but I’m looking forward to doing some trips. I’m planning on going to some more wineries around the area.

Tell us about your classes in Romsey.

Tell us about your own dancing career.

At Pas de Deux I teach tap, musical theatre, lyrical and Broadway jazz. My youngest pupil is four or five and my oldest student has just turned 18. I only teach girls, but there are boys at the school. I love that teaching dance gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience.

I worked overseas as a dancer for seven years. I lived in Paris for four years working at the Moulin Rouge, including performances in Times Square in New York City, Moscow and San Remo. I performed on cruise ships for many years also, travelling to Canada, America, Europe, Tahiti, Bahamas … I now teach at three dance schools in Melbourne and Pas de Deux in Romsey. I just returned from a tour of New Zealand with Cabaret de Paris and will be performing in the Ultimate Vegas Show at Crown in Melbourne at the end of July.

What do you like about this area? My favourite thing about teaching in this area are my students. It never feels like work

SPORT Canons fall in run home By Ewen McRae Calder Cannons missed a golden opportunity to take a big scalp in the TAC Cup on Saturday, going down to Dandenong after leading in the last quarter. The Cannons managed just one behind in the final term as the Stingrays banged home 5.5 to steal the win 10.18 (78) - 8.7 (55). Calder coach Andrew Johnston said it was a performance symptomatic of their season to date. “We were competitive to a point, but just not there in the last which is a bit par for the course this year,” Johnston said. “We were really good in the first, good to a point in the next two, but then fell away badly in the last and Dandenong were able to get on top. “The reality is you can’t just be good for one quarter, you have to do it for four, and against quality opposition they will make you pay.” With the aid of a strong breeze, Calder shot out of the blocks early with four of the first five goals to open up a 20-point lead at the first change, but Dandenong was equally as good when its turn with the wind came. The Stingrays were inaccurate, scoring 2.8 in the second, but kept the home side to just one behind to draw within a point at the long break. The wind died down after half-time as the two sides traded blows, Calder holding onto the lead until midway through the final quarter before Dandenong started to assert their authority. Four goals in 10 minutes to Dandenong after the 13-minute mark of the final quarter finally broke the resistance of Calder, which slipped to its ninth loss of the season and sit just percentage off the bottom of the ladder. Despite the drop off, Johnston said fitness wasn’t an issue. “I don’t think the result had anything to do with fitness, it was just a want to maintain that level that we had earlier in the game,” he said. “We had a young backline that got some good experience and hopefully they’ll be better for it going into the next two months of footy and into 2018.” Calder will face another stern test this week against Murray Bushrangers, and Johnston said his side was ready for the challenge. “It just doesn’t stop, and that’s the beauty of this competition,” Johnston said. “When you’re down the bottom you’re always playing teams above you, so you either learn from it or you shut up shop, and we’re certainly not going to do that. “You can’t hide away from it … if you’re not learning from it then you’re in trouble and you go back to local footy until you can. “We know we’re heading in the right direction and it’s just going to take some more work to get there.”

Sunbury puts faith in longterm plans Sunbury United is confident of avoiding a third straight relegation this year, putting its faith in youth and hoping for some strong results in the second half of the year. United hit the mid-year bye in ninth spot on the Football Federation Victoria’s state league 3 north-west table, with four wins and two draws from its 14 games. “Before our loss in the last game I think we’d collected 10 of a possible 12 points in a month of football, so that shows we’re on the right path,” coaching director Greg Czapnik said. “We’re obviously not where we want to be, but we’ve had significant change around the club with personnel and structure and these things take time.” The club merged its senior and junior clubs in the off season, and appointed Lino Grech as coach from National Premier League club Pascoe Vale. Czapnik said the club had prioritised its youth this season, and it would be a little while before the true benefits were seen. “Being such a young team it takes time; they’re inexperienced and don’t take all their chances,” he said. “We create so much, and we’re playing a really good brand of football, but these kids are on a learning curve and I think it will pay off. “It was a significant change to the club and we’ve given opportunities to play senior football to some young men who wouldn’t get that at other clubs in the NPL system. “Every one of those young men will be better players for the opportunities we give them, and that’s the goal for us.” After only scoring in three of their first nine games, the goals have flowed in the five games leading up to the break, with 12 goals showing the potential of this player group. Czapnik said if they can stay together and continue to improve they will be a force in coming years. “For us it’s about taking our chances,” he said. “We’ve played some really good football against most sides, so if we could convert our chances we’ll score a bagful. “The guys are getting more confident each week, and there’s eight games to go so we have to keep that momentum we had before the bye and run with it.” Ewen McRae

Young gun living out her football dream Madeline Barton is living her dream. The Woodend footballer will jet off to Perth later this month as part of the Victorian under-15 girls side, ready to take on the country’s best in the National Championships. It’s an opportunity she is still pinching herself about. “I screamed a bit when I heard,” Barton said. “I was feeling pretty good, and my brother asked if I was an emergency and I said ‘no, I’m in the team’ so that was pretty cool. “We’ve had a few training sessions as a squad and the girls are really nice and I think we’ll have a really good team. “I can’t wait to just play footy for a week, and playing against the best girls in Australia is a huge opportunity.” Barton, 14, started her football journey at 24 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 11, 2017

She made the interleague side this season and from there earned a spot in the Calder Cannons’ under-15 girls development squad. It was making the Cannons’ squad which first put the thought of state trials in her mind. “I started to take it a bit more seriously after that and thought I’d try out for the state team, and I got it,” she said. “I play mainly in the ruck with a bit of time forward, but I prefer going forward and kicking a goal.” She said playing her first couple of years of matches in a mixed side helped toughen her up and accelerate her development before moving into an all girls team three years ago.

“I quite liked playing with the boys,” she said. “It was a lot tougher and I like that. When I started playing in a girls side there were less sides so you played the same sides a bit, and a lot of the girls hadn’t played before so the skill level dropped a bit. “That was a few years ago, now there’s more sides, more players and the standard is much higher.” The success of the inaugural AFLW season earlier this year has further encouraged Barton to continue her football journey and aim for the national stage. “I’m a Bombers supporter and they’ve put in a bid to join the competition … hopefully they’re in there by the time I’m ready to be drafted.” Ewen McRae

Match-winning quarter keeps Macedon’s record in tact Macedon’s netballers were able to do what their footballers could not on Saturday, maintaining their unbeaten record with a comeback win over Diggers Rest. While the Cats only won one quarter for the day, one dominant period of play proved enough to get them over the line, 49-45, and kept them a game clear of Romsey on top of the ladder. Diggers Rest grabbed the early ascendency through Amy Carroll and Shelby Strong as the home side took a three-point lead into the first change. Both sides traded blows throughout the second quarter as they each scored 13 goals, but it was the third quarter which would prove the decisive term. The Cats outscored the hosts 16-7 to shoot to the lead, with Chloe Wilson unstoppable with 10 goals. The six-goal margin in the last quarter proved too much for the Burras, who had their best quarter with 15 goals but could not stop

Macedon scoring at the other end as the visitors took the win. Wilson finished with 30 goals, while Strong (20 goals) and Carroll (25) were strong all match. The win keeps Macedon on top, while Diggers hang onto sixth. Elsewhere, Melton Centrals was too strong for Woodend Hesket in their match, with a dominant second half delivering a strong 51-31 win. The two sides were tight early, with Centrals leading by just two points at the first change and four at half-time. Vanessa Seddon took control of the game in the third term – the Centrals goal shooter getting 11 goals for the quarter to stretch the game open. The Hawks had no answers in the final term as the home side continued to score freely and grab a good win. Sunbury Kangaroos were never in the contest against Rockbank, falling to a 21-55 loss.

Rockbank wrapped up the points with a 29-9 first half, thanks largely to Jessica Herron who had 21 on her own. The Kangaroos nearly doubled their score with eight third-quarter goals, but it was too little too late as the Rams grabbed their second win of the season. Finally, Rupertswood fell to just its fourth loss of the season, going down to Romsey, 45-37. Burras fight to the end By Ewen McRae Diggers Rest bounced back from its trouncing from Rupertswood last week in spectacular fashion, delivering Macedon its first defeat of the season on Saturday. After serving up its worst performance of the season last week, Diggers Rest was up for the fight against the Riddell District Football League ladder leaders from the opening bounce, overcoming a raft of injuries to run over the top of their opponents, 13.8 (86)-10.6 (66). The Burras home win was all the more meritorious as they ended the day with just one fit player on the bench, and came from behind in the fourth quarter to kick the final four goals of the game and clinch the points. Burras coach Shaun Sims said it was one of the best wins he had been a part of. “I’m very proud of the way we played, sticking it out for four quarters and getting the win,” Sims said. “They’re a quality outfit Macedon, they’re not undefeated for a reason, but I thought the pressure and intensity that we brought around the ball was in stark contrast to last week. “We’re a proud club, and we were outworked last week, but I had full faith that we would respond and I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud of the group as I was today.” It was a battle of attrition all day for both sides, with goals hard to come by as the pressure around the ball made space hard to find. The Burras held a slender three-point lead at the first change, but were 10 points behind at half-time as Macedon flexed its muscle and started to win the clearances. Goals were again hard to come by in the third, and every time Diggers Rest clawed closer to Macedon the visitors were able to hit back to restore the buffer. By early in the final quarter the home side was down to just one man on the bench, with Jack Wilson (broken nose), Pat Jackson (concussion) and Josh Wallace (ankle) all ruled out of the game, and when Macedon goaled twice early in the last to stretch to a 15-point lead it looked like they might run over the top of the home side. But from halfway through the last quarter it was all Diggers, with some big marks and goals inside 50 to Taylor Hine and Nathan Maisano giving the side the momentum and the rest of the side finding some run in the legs to finish stronger than the Cats. Frustrations boiled over late for Macedon’s Alastair Collins as he was yellow carded for his part in a scuffle when the result was sealed. The win keeps Diggers Rest in third place, two games clear of Sunbury Kangaroos. “We said before the game that it was going to be tight, and it might take four or five contests to move the ball forward, and to our guys’ credit they did that all day,” Sims said.

Sunbury fell to a heartbreaking one-point loss to ladder leader Knox at the weekend, giving the Jets just their fourth loss of the Big V Women’s Championship season. While Karen Duever was strong all day with 22 points and eight rebounds, and a further three players scored double-digit points, the Raiders were able to outlast the Jets in a 69-68 win. In division 1 men, the Jets were too strong for Geelong in an 88-70 win. Deng Chan was the best with 27 points and 11 rebounds.

issan reckons the Pathfinder is Australiaâ€™s forgotten SUV, even if it has managed to sell 70,000 of them to Australians in the past three decades.
