School of hard shots Sunbury netballers have more than one reason to look forward to the school holidays. They are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to train with some of Melbourne’s best. Sunbury Netball Association (SNA) will host a clinic run by Melbourne Vixen players Emily Mannix and Khao Watts on Monday, July 10. The day will be held at SNA’s home, Boardman Stadium in Sunbury. SNA representative team co-ordinator Amanda Azzopardi said club members were very excited for the day. Tickets to the clinic are available to anyone aged 9-15 years – not just members. Crime figures on the rise By Serena Seyfort Motor vehicle thefts and assaults were the driving factors behind a 5.6 per cent increase in overall crime in the Macedon Ranges. New Crime Statistics Agency data released last week showed 2632 offences had been recorded in the Macedon Ranges in the year to March 31, up from 2493 the previous year. Motor vehicle theft soared 44 per cent, with 72 incidents recorded in the past year, up from 50 in the previous 12 months. While crime in the Macedon Ranges exceeded the state’s 4 per cent rise, Sunbury recorded a 12.8 per cent decline in overall crime.

Macedon Ranges Inspector Ryan Irwin said theft of farm gear, such as quad bikes, from remote properties largely contributed to the growing number of motor vehicle theft. He said in most cases metropolitan-based offenders moving through the area were responsible for the thefts. The number of assaults in the Macedon Ranges jumped 50.2 per cent, from 217 cases in the year ending March 2016, up to 326 in the past year. Inspector Irwin said the “vast majority” of these incidents took place within Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre and were not considered serious.

He said almost 75 per cent of these assault cases were deemed ‘unlawful assaults’ – meaning they did not cause injury. Many of these were likely to have been “push and shove” incidents, Inspector Irwin said. Sexual offences in the Macedon Ranges rose by 75.4 per cent in the past year, to 100 from 57. Inspector Irwin attributed this increase to two ongoing cases which involved repeated offences against the victims. Meanwhile, arson offences fell by 26.3 per cent and drug dealing dropped by 43.5 per cent in the Macedon Ranges. There was an overall decline in crime in Sunbury with 2858 offences recorded, down

from 3278 in the previous year. Assault offences dropped by 14 per cent, there was an 18.2 per cent fall in arson incidents, and a 12.6 per cent decrease in burglary cases. However, drug dealing and trafficking offences rose by 48 per cent. Hume Inspector Anthony Brown said the increase in the number of drug offences could be attributed to “increased commitment to that area”. Inspector Brown said police in Sunbury were committed to updating their methodology. “We are constantly reviewing the ways we investigate crimes,” he said.

Coroner calls for seat review after toddler’s death The State Coroner has suggested car seat restraint systems be reviewed following an investigation into the death of a 22-month-old Kyneton boy in 2015. Last week Judge Sara Hinchey delivered her findings regarding Noah Zunde’s death in February 2015. The judge affirmed that Noah died “from heat stroke, after he was inadvertently left in the family motor vehicle by his mother”. Judge Hinchey stated her “sincerest sympathy to Noah’s family and loved ones,” after

declaring that his “tragic death was however, clearly preventable.” The judge endorsed associate professor and memory expert Matthew Mundy’s evidence that “engineering controls are the best option to ensure that a child sitting quietly in their child restraint, is not forgotten by their parent or carer,” as Noah was. “There are no current proposals to regulate and mandate rear seat reminders for vehicles, either in Australia or internationally,” Judge Hinchey said she was advised after inquiring with the Commonwealth government.

Judge Hinchey therefore recommended Standards Australia determine “whether the introduction of hard-wired safety features in a child restraint will deliver an overall benefit to the Australian community”. “If concluded that these features would be beneficial” she recommended the standards

be modified “to ensure that hard-wired safety features are introduced where appropriate”. The judge also recommended “that the Department of Education and Training expand its current awareness campaign related to children being left in motor vehicles to include circumstances where a child is inadvertently left in a motor vehicle”. Teen vaccine for free to beat deadly disease

Harnessing his talent By Serena Seyfort Gisborne teenager Luke Humphreys is proving to be a frontrunner in the race-calling world. He called last week at Victoria’s home of harness racing, Tabcorp Park Melton, at a race meeting which was televised on Sky Channel. The 16-year-old said he was “very, very lucky” to have been given such an opportunity. “To call at Victoria’s harness racing headquarters at my age is an honour – it’s a privilege,” Luke said. “It’s just the stuff you dream of, really.”

Luke got into horse racing at an early age through his father who breeds and races standardbreds. As a young boy, Luke would go along to the race course and practise calling. He landed his first break, as a grade 6 pupil, when Ballarat Turf Club asked if he would fill in for the regular night trials caller. Luke laughed when recalling his first broadcasting gigs. “I thought, ‘This will be easy’,” he said. “Of course, I was appalling at it.” Now the young broadcaster calls races at Bendigo and Bacchus Marsh harness racing

Luke said he aspired to calling feature races and to pursue media studies, but was thrilled with his progress so far. “Calling the Melbourne Cup would be the absolute pinnacle for any Melbourne caller,” he said. “But I’m happy with what I’m doing at the moment.”

Free meningococcal vaccine is on offer for those aged 15 to 19 years – the age group most at risk of catching and spreading the deadly disease. Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents aged 15 to 19 years can receive free vaccine to protect against the potentially fatal meningococcal W strain. Year 10, 11 and 12 students at schools in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges can be immunised at school as part of the state’s school-based vaccination program. Young people from 15-19 who do not attend local schools can be vaccinated by contacting Macedon Ranges council on 5422 0333 or Hume council (Sunbury) on 9205 2200. The number of people infected by the meningococcal W strain has risen in recent years. Victoria experienced 48 cases in 2016, up from just 17 in 2015 and four in 2014. Macedon Ranges community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said that while the disease was rare, adolescents were the people most at risk. “National immunisation experts have identified teenagers are at increased risk and more likely to spread the disease to others due to their social habits and close contact in schools and other group environments,” she said. Meningococcal bacteria are passed from person to person through close contact.

Cyclist fights for life

Ranges council approval rises

By Emily Woods and Robyn Grace A St Alban’s man is in “the fight of his life” after being hit by a car in Macedon last Monday. The 44-year-old was one of three cyclists struck by a white Holden travelling in the same direction on Black Forest Drive. Police are investigating whether speed, driver distraction, alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash about 10.45am on the Queen’s Birthday. Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said another car had safely overtaken the cyclists just before the crash. “The cyclists wouldn’t have known the driver was coming. It’s a really horrible scenario.” Macedon Ranges Cycling Club president Brett Ellis, who has cycled locally for a decade, said Black Forest Drive was not a dangerous spot and there was no reason for a crash there. “It’s one of those roads where people should be able to slow down momentarily, move over and go past the cyclists without any problems,” he said. Black Forest Drive is a popular route for local and visiting cyclists. A bike lane was added to the road in 2011, only to be removed months later following community complaints. Mr Ellis said that even cyclists had complained about the short-lived bike lane. “It benefitted a few people, but it’s not the ideal situation,” he said. “I think the ‘metre matters’ rule is really what we need to encourage, because all cyclists benefit from that.” Detective Amos, who is investigating the crash, said the badly injured cyclist was “in the fight of his life to try and survive”. The cyclist suffered severe spinal and neck injuries and remains in a critical condition in Austin Hospital.

Macedon Ranges residents are more impressed with their council’s work than they were last year, according to the 2017 Community Satisfaction Survey. Macedon Ranges council’s overall performance rating has increased to 56 from last year’s 55 and beats the average rating of 54 out of 100 for large rural shires across Victoria. The 400 respondents generally rated emergency management, waste and the appearance of public areas as the council’s main strengths. The council also rated well for customer service. Customer service refers to not only the work done by staff employed to handle inquiries, but the work of all council staff – including gardeners and maintenance workers. “Every member of staff works to provide good customer service, so it’s wonderful to see that this is reflected in our survey results,” said council chief executive Peter Johnson. Residents aged 50 to 64 years rated the council’s overall performance significantly lower than average, while residents aged 18 to 34 years rated it significantly higher. Masterclass in unity It’s often said that football is more than a game. That proved true in Woodend last week when a combined training session brought together football players of all ages and sexes. More than 40 players from Woodend-Hesket Masters and senior women from the Kyneton Football Club took part in a shared training session at Gilbert Gordon Oval on Wednesday night. At times, even kids joined in the play. Masters player Jason Koliba and his partner, Kyneton senior player Candice Davies, organised the night to showcase a growing interest in football from older players and women and to celebrate community spirit.

Koliba said it was important for mature-aged players to have the support of their families to help them stay in the game. The masters club was started two years ago as a way to foster community togetherness and promote men’s health. Koliba said last week’s session was a great way of further uniting the community. “The feedback was great – that it’s something we need to do more often,” Koliba said. Cheers to a vine idea By Serena Seyfort Here’s to the health of the Macedon Ranges’ wine industry. Grants are available as the state government seeks to help winemakers develop Victoria’s wine industry. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced the Wine Industry Development Strategy and the next stage of the Wine Growth Fund earlier this month.

“The Macedon region is world renowned for producing some of the finest wines in Australia,” Ms Thomas said. “Through our Wine Growth Fund, we will help growers further their potential to attract more visitors and capitalise on their export potential.” The four-year strategy aims to assist winemakers in taking up new opportunities and addressing the trading and production challenges.

The program is also aimed at increasing tourism and visitor spending in wine regions, developing profitable and sustainable export markets and increasing industry co-ordination. To support initiatives by individual organisations and collaborations, the Victorian government has allocated $893,000 to be distributed as grants. A youth support service tackling unemployment in Sunbury and Craigieburn has been recognised with four national awards. Glenroy-based Youth Projects was recently awarded the Steve Lawrence Innovation Award and three outstanding achievement awards at the CoAct National Conference. CoAct, a national network of not-for-profit employment agencies, recognises services developing innovative approaches to improving job opportunities. Youth Projects chair Melanie Raymond said the organisation worked with young people aged 15-21. She said Craigieburn and Sunbury had some of the highest youth unemployment rates in the nation, with about 33 per cent of young people jobless. She described the figures as “very alarming”. “[Craigieburn and Sunbury] are also areas that get neglected and forgotten about,” she said. Ms Raymond said Youth Projects helped young people to gain the skills they needed to secure jobs, with a particular emphasis on developing interpersonal and teamwork skills. “The biggest risk to young people today is being locked into long-term unemployment and poverty. This raises the likelihood that they will never reach their potential and remain in a cycle of insecure, poorly paid work,” she said. Laura Michell

MY PLACE Christine Wangerek, president and co-founder of the Macedon Ranges Film Society, enjoys life in the Macedon Ranges and contributing to the Woodend community. She speaks with Serena Seyfort. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? I moved to Woodend in 2003 because my husband’s from here. Once I moved up, I wanted to be able to give back to the community and get involved. I don’t commute to Melbourne much any more, so I’m able to do things locally. What hats do you wear in the community? I’m president of the Macedon Ranges Film Society. I also volunteer at Woodend library once a week and I used to volunteer at the visitor information centre in Woodend. I just like being able to contribute and be involved. How did you come to be involved with the Macedon Ranges Film Society? A friend of mine also moved up here. She loves film and said it would be great to start a film society. People around here have to drive quite far to get to a cinema. We were on the committee that started the Macedon Ranges Film Society in 2010. At the moment, the committee has eight people and the society has around 60 to 65 members. What do you enjoy about the Macedon Ranges? I love walking outside and watching the birds. I also love Black Hill Reserve, just out of Kyneton. It’s beautiful and it’s a bit less well-known than Hanging Rock and Mount Macedon. (Marco De Luca)

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I’d love a Vietnamese restaurant in Woodend! But as it is, the whole area has a lot to offer for a fulfilling life. There are always things happening, like the cabarets and shows at the town hall.

SPORT Bombers fall at final hurdle, but have turned a corner Riddell almost pulled off the biggest upset of the Riddell District Netball League season against Romsey at the weekend. The Bombers stuck with the highly rated Redbacks for most of the game and finished the stronger of the two teams. While they outscored the Redbacks 16-10 goals in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough with the Redbacks winning, 50-47. The result was a lot closer than the 38-goal margin when the two teams played in round three. Neither side was at full strength at the weekend, with Victorian Netball League commitments and restrictions having an impact.

Tanisha Bardzinski revelled in getting a whole game in the top grade, shooting 32 goals and was the most accurate shooter on court. The result means the Bombers remain in seventh spot, a game outside the top six, but that isn’t the main concern for coach Eliza Allen. Speaking before the match, Allen said the biggest focus for her side was playing their own game and not what other teams were doing. “We have turned a corner a little bit with expectations of each other,” she said. “We’re focusing on ourselves and we’re definitely playing better. “After the Romsey game earlier in the season, we changed our game plan to use our speed

through the midcourt. I was really happy with the Macedon game [the following week] as we realised we can be competitive not only in the game but on the scoreboard against some of the better teams.” Allen said they were starting to see playing partnerships come together well. She said Kira Baldwin and Sarah King were working really well together in defence, while at the shooting end they had Chloe Meulenmeesters, Jessica Lallo, Christine Harris and Ellen Close. Meanwhile, Bardzinski has come up and played a few games in A-grade after standout performances in B-grade. Harris and Close, the two most experienced players in the side, have taken on new roles

with the side having so many shooters. Allen said both were thriving in learning how to play in the midcourt, with Harris playing wing attack and Close playing centre. “Christine controls a lot of what happens and is the more experienced head on court,” she said. “She’s loving it, having pressure on her all the time. She’s as fit as a fiddle and can go all day.” In other matches, Rupertswood overcame Melton Centrals, Rockbank got its first win of the season against Woodend-Hesket, Lancefield was too strong for Diggers Rest and Macedon remains undefeated after beating Sunbury Kangaroos. Late loss rocks Sunbury By Tara Murray Less than one second was the difference between the Sunbury Jets scoring the best win of their season or suffering an agonisingly heartbreaking loss. The Jets took it up to Big V division 1 ladder leaders Keilor and the match always looked like it would go down to the final minutes. When Javari Williams scored his 11th basket of the game with 5.6 seconds to go, the Jets hoped it would be enough. They defended well for 5.2 of those seconds before a foul sent the Thunder’s Matthew Spencer to the line with 0.4 seconds remaining. He calmly slotted both shots to give the Thunder back the lead. The Jets couldn’t get a shot off in time and lost 78-77. While immensely proud of his side’s performance, Jets’ coach Lanard Copeland was still devastated. “We’re not making any excuses, we made a lot of mistakes and we had two guys with nine plus turnovers,” he said. “We got a technical foul with 18 seconds left and we missed 15 free throws, but we still had a chance to win. “They gave it their all and I’m not mad, but I’m still disappointed.” Williams was the standout for the Jets with 29 points and 12 rebounds. When the deficit got out to 10 points in the third quarter, it was Williams who got the Jets back into the game. Copeland said the game wasn’t one he was expecting. He said after a poor week at training, including the worst training session of the year, he was nervous how they would play. They only had eight players suit up, with only seven taking to the court. Now Copeland wants the intensity he saw on the court at the weekend to be the standard for the rest of the season. “The most important thing for me is of course I wanted to win, but we are getting better. “The last time we played this team I think we were 30 points down at half-time. If you can play against this team, which is in top position, you should be able to play every game as hard as this.” The Jets are fifth in their pool after 13 matches and are only two games behind second-placed Warrnambool Seahawks. After playing better the past few weeks, Copeland expects them to continue on the up for the rest of the season. The Jets should get one player back next week, but will lose Jacob Formosa who is playing in a tournament in Malta. The Jets’ women’s side lost its second successive game, losing to Ringwood Hawks 71-61. Without Courtney Duever, the Jets lost the first three quarters and despite winning the last quarter couldn’t reduce the margin enough. Orla O’Reilly top-scored for the Jets with 25 points. Cannons fail at the finish A poor third quarter proved the undoing for the Calder Cannons against Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup on Saturday. The Cannons led by three points at half-time, but were held to only one goal in the third quarter, while the Dragons kicked 6.7 for the term. A 34-point three-quarter lead proved to be the difference, with only one point separating the teams in the final quarter. The Dragons won 13.13 (91)-8.8 (56). It was all single goalscorers for the Cannons, as they struggled to find a key target up forward. Cannons skipper Brad Bernacki continued his good form and was named his side’s best for a third straight match. The loss means the Cannons are on the bottom of the ladder. Meanwhile several Cannons were in action for Vic Metro in their first matches of the under-18 national championships. In the girls, Madison Prespakis was named metro’s best in their 8.6 (54)-4.3 (27) loss to Vic Country on Saturday. Other Cannons, Sarah Dargan and Georgia Patrikios were also named in the best. After leading at quarter-time, Metro kicked just one goal in the last three quarters. On Sunday, four Cannons played in Metro’s 14.12 (96)-9.4 (58) win against Western Australia. Cannons’ Dylan Landt kicked two goals and was named one of Metro’s best. Tara Murray Javari Williams’ hard work ethic was not enough to get Sunbury Jets over the line. Cats play to their strength to maintain winning streak Macedon overcame a scrappy start against Sunbury Kangaroos to keep its unbeaten streak intact in the Riddell District Football League. The Cats fought hard early on before kicking away in the second half to win 18.11 (119)-5.12 (42). Cats coach Jeff Andrews said they really had to work for all their goals. “It was pretty average and scrappy early, but on a beautiful day with no wind it was good to run away with it in the end,” he said. “We didn’t think we were playing the sort of footy we wanted to early, but that was a fair bit to do with their pressure. It’s a bit smaller ground than we’re used to and there wasn’t a lot

of space. They were hard at the ball and making us earn everything.” The Cats opened the game up late in the second quarter and managed to get their run and carry going. Once in control they rammed the game home in the third quarter, with the ball spending most of the quarter in their half. The Kangaroos didn’t score a goal until nearly 24 minutes had gone. The game was over at that point. “We played to our strengths instead of letting them dictate how we went about it,” Andrews said. “We had to work for our open space today, sometimes it just happens for you.

“The pleasing thing for us [is] that it was against another top-four side and we’ve kept them to a low score. We might not have kicked as many goals as we would have liked but we are trying to defend first, which is evident with the score.” Matt Dick was named the Cats’ best, but it was another former AFL-listed player, Daniel Markworth, who lit it up early with four goals. “Dan’s going overseas for a couple of weeks so I think he was filling his boots before he went,” Andrews said. “Before he came back to us last year he had injuries. I think for the first time in his career he’s playing continuous football.”

Big day for loyal Tiger By Tara Murray A bit of luck was all it took for Scott McEntee to find his way to Sunbury United Rugby League Club. Up in Sydney with his dad to watch Melbourne Storm play in its first NRL grand final, in 1999, they got talking to other Melbourne Storm fans while at their hotel. “It was just by luck we had Melbourne Storm colours on,” McEntee said. “Some guy said he was the president of Sunbury Rugby League club and that I should come down and they’ll have a look at me. “It was the end of the season, obviously, but he stayed in touch and I came down to pre-season the start of the next year.” The teenage McEntee fell in love with the game and on Saturday he became the first player to play 200 games for the Tigers when he ran out with the reserves side. The achievement is the latest in a career that has spanned 16 years. He was made a life member of the club in 2010, has won the club’s division 2 player of the year award, has been named club player of year and club person of the year and has won a coaches award. “When I started, I was coming to the games with L plates on. I’ve seen a lot of guys come and go,” McEntee said. “I think I got the [games] record at 151, so every game after that is always a new record, but 200 games is a big milestone.” That milestone could quite easily have not happened. McEntee took a year off last year after falling out of the love with the game. He returned this year and has no plans to retire just yet. Nicknamed Spaghetti, after his spaghetti-like arms and legs when he first joined the club, McEntee has seen the club go through high and low times. He was part of a couple of premierships and has seen some great players come through. He said the club environment was a big factor in why he continues to play. “When I was a bit younger, I put in more effort to be a first-grader,” he said. “As you get older, you’re just happy having a run. “It doesn’t matter which grade as long as you’re having a run. “I’ve seen a lot of young boys come through [from the past Melbourne Storm alignment] and you see them on the big screen and think, ‘I ran around with them’. It’s one big family.” The Tigers weren’t able to celebrate McEntee’s milestone game with a win, with the reserves losing to Truganina Rabbitohs 40-24. The seniors lost to Werribee Bears 24-16.

While Markworth will be missing for a few weeks, the Cats have skipper James Wright to come back into the side. Andrews said the players coming up from the two’s were stepping up to the challenge. It was a big day for the Cats, with Alastair Collins and Hamish Miles playing their 150th games and Tom Hildebrand playing his 100th. In other results, Riddell accounted for Romsey and made the top six, Rupertswood was too good for Melton Centrals, Diggers Rest smashed Broadford and Woodend-Hesket had to come from behind to defeat Rockbank. On the road for a fourth straight week, the Lions got going early against Ballarat and were never challenged, winning 20.4 (124)-11.10 (76). Ben Said, returning from illness, kicked six goals. East Sunbury has won three straight matches for the first time in the club’s history. Playing bottom side Keilor Park, the Thunder led by 24 points at quarter-time and then extended the lead in every quarter to win 23.14 (152)-10.4 (64). Tom Burnside kicked seven goals in the win. He’s now kicked 13 goals in the past two weeks. Mitchell Ash was named best.

Bendigo FL

Kyneton has fallen further away from the top sides in the Bendigo Football League, with a 14.10 (94)-9.10 (64) loss to Strathfieldsaye on Saturday. The Storm got the jump early and the Tigers were left chasing all day. Rhys Magin was best for the Tigers. Kyneton is now sixth, two points outside the top five. This week it takes on local rival Gisborne, which lost 17.11 (113)-10.10 (70) to Sandhurst on Saturday.

Sunbury United’s good form continued with a third straight win in FFV state league 3 north-west. After beating a couple of the lower sides the past few weeks, United took on third-placed Williamstown and won 2-1.

BMX

It was a battle between Sunbury and Wyndham BMX riders on Saturday in the Levorg Winter Challenge intraclub event. More than 90 riders from the two clubs competed in the challenge, including 22 riders in the under-7s and mini wheelers sections. In the 8-year-old boys, Tyla Hall won from Hamish Monaghan and Charlie Gardiner, while in the 9-boys Ava Lazaridis defeated Lily Corbett and Lincoln Bettany. Kobie Cunningham won the 10-year-old boys, Ava Fenton won the 11-year-old girls and Jai Copeland won the 11-year-old boys. Sam Todd won both the 12-year-old boys and retro class, while Luca Weber, Byron Blyth, Michael Ellul, Alyssa James and Gary and Jordan Morgan won their classes.
