Axle is the king of spin This Sunbury staffy has been putting people in a spin all over the world. A video of the Staffordshire terrier balancing a moving fidget spinner on each of his nose and front paws went viral on social media last week. The balancing act with this popular toy even made it to Melbourne television screens. Axle’s owner has since acquired an animal agent to manage his publicity and the pooch’s Instagram account already has more than 10,000 followers. Owner Belinda Shipp said she wanted to combat the negative stigma around his breed. “Everyone thinks negatively about [staffies], but it really just comes down to the owner.” Axle was trained at obedience school and follows Ms Shipp everywhere – even to work in her son’s vehicle workshop. “He’s such a loyal, placid dog,” she said.

Hero husband a lifesaver By Serena Seyfort A Gisborne South woman is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first grandchild, thanks to the lifesaving efforts of her husband and local paramedics. Ulgen Babacan suffered a cardiac arrest in April and spent more than three weeks in intensive care. Last week the 53-year-old was reunited with the Ambulance Victoria paramedics who came to her rescue and was able to personally thank them. Paramedic Stephen Riley, who treated the
mother-of-two at the scene, said being able to see a cardiac arrest patient “under better circumstances” was rare. “I’ve been a paramedic for more than 20 years and I have never had the opportunity to meet with a cardiac arrest survivor,” he said. The paramedics presented Mrs Babacan’s husband of more than 30 years, Deniz, with an Ambulance Victoria Bystander award for his lifesaving efforts. Mr Babacan woke to a loud sound Mrs Babacan was making when her heart stopped beating during her sleep. When she didn’t respond he called triple-0
and following instructions moved her to the floor and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Mr Riley said Mr Babacan’s attempt at giving his wife CPR “made a big difference” to her survival. Birthday honours for vets work Two Macedon Ranges residents were honoured this Queen’s Birthday for their service to veterans and their families. Not only do these locals share a first name – and now the same accolade, but they have also made significant contributions in similar fields. Kyneton’s Francis John Bell (pictured) and Woodend’s Dr Francis Anthony Donovan were each awarded with a Medal of the Order of Australia earlier this week. Both men have volunteered at the Returned
and Services League of Australia, the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia and to those who served for the country from the Macedon Ranges area. Mr Bell has been volunteering for the RSL for 18 years. Upon retiring from his rail career in 1989, Mr Bell took up full time work to support those who have served or are serving in the defence forces. “It was a theme in those days. You didn’t stop work when you retired – you took up voluntary work,” he said.
Mr Bell also contributed to the rebuilding and maintenance of the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross – Victoria’s second largest World War One memorial. In recent years Dr Donovan has co-ordinated the Mount Macedon Anzac Dawn Service at the cross. Dr Donovan also negotiated to establish the national Vietnam Veteran’s Counselling Service, and then volunteered as a counselling social worker for veterans and their families. He was overseas and unable to be contacted by Star Weekly.

Bulla waste outfit cops fine for fire A Bulla waste facility has been fined more than $7000 after stockpiles of waste caught fire earlier this year. The March 16 fire at Veolia Environmental Service’s site on Sunbury Road started in stockpiles of composted material. An Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) investigation following the blaze found that poor site practices had led to the fire. The company was fined $7773 for breaching its licence conditions, which require it to ensure waste did not burn. EPA metro manager Dan Hunt said the stockpiles at the site were too large and a lack of waste rotation had failed to reduce the temperature of the mulched materials to the level necessary to ensure the waste did not self-ignite. “Fire at a waste site can cause disruption to local communities, can impact on neighbouring properties and the local environment,” Mr Hunt said. “EPA expects that preventative actions are taken to avoid stockpile fire and that companies have processes in place to ensure compliance. “This can be achieved through a number of ways, such as management of stockpile levels and internal ventilation.” Mr Hunt said the EPA would continue to inspect the site to ensure the company was complying with its licence conditions.

Kyneton CFA has gained more than $32,000 to upgrade the station’s doors.

Emergency service volunteer groups across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges have been given a boost to make their work easier. Local CFA brigades and SES units have received funding for equipment and facility upgrades from the state’s Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability program. Sunbury businesses fuel loyalty By Serena Seyfort Sunbury businesses are uniting in a campaign to encourage residents to go local. Several shops have jumped on board a co-operative fuel discount program that rewards customers for using small businesses. Morgan’s IGA Supermarkets managing director Neal Morgan describes the program as being the independent, small business equivalent of those run by major chains.
“But it’s better,” he said. The scheme seeks to beat chain stores at their own game by making the fuel discount cumulative, instead of a set amount per litre, and able to be redeemed after purchases at all fuel outlets. The discount accumulates with transactions at any participating local store. “We’re trying to get other retailers on board,” Mr Morgan said. “Any small business can get on board and add their own discount.” Morgan’s IGA Supermarkets, Positive

Footwear and Save On Appliances are the local businesses currently involved in the scheme. Sunbury Business Association treasurer Sylvia Unferdorben said residents supporting local businesses was crucial for Sunbury.
“Supporting local business is the only thing that’s important in Sunbury,” Ms Unferdorben said. “If you don’t support local, a lot of the independent businesses that make up Sunbury will be lost and it will become like every other suburb.” The discount program is administered by EasyFuel, a family business that works to promote local businesses in regions across Australia.
Body repairs trading up With more than 30 years of industry experience under his belt, the owner of Romsey’s JAKs Body Repairs is doing his bit for the future of mechanics. Owner Alex Spiteri is currently training up two apprentices at his panel shop, even though he said it took “a lot of money”. Earlier this month Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited JAKs Body Repairs to meet Mr Spiteri and his apprentices. The state government is looking at the barriers stopping people from taking up apprenticeships and traineeships. The inquiry comes after the 2017-18 state budget allocated $8.2 million for TAFE support officers to help apprentices under 25 finish training and get jobs. Mr Spiteri told Star Weekly that financially assisting business owners would help workshops take on more apprentices. “Other shops won’t put them on ‘cause it costs too much money,” he said.
Mr Spiteri said it took two years for businesses to make a profit from apprentices because they were employed on adult wages while being trained. He said he took on apprentices with the industry’s future in mind, and because he liked to teach. “We do it to keep our trade alive,” said Mr Spiteri. “If we’re not putting apprentices on our trade will die.” Serena Seyfort

Gisborne Station car park upgrade construction The car park at Gisborne Station is being upgraded with 40 new commuter parking spaces. Construction has commenced, and the northern car park will be closed between June and September 2017. A temporary car park is available on Early Street. More information about alternative car park options is available at the station and on VicTrack’s website. The Gisborne Station upgrade is part of the Victorian Government’s $20 million commitment to fund additional parking spaces at 17 stations on railway lines experiencing high growth in passenger numbers. The Indigenous television and theatre star has been convicted 22 times for burglary and drug related offences and was once addicted to heroin. Charles was taken from his mother when he was just a baby as part of the Stolen Generation. Following a crime spree and drug addiction that landed him in and out of jail, Charles became a highly acclaimed television and theatre star and established Australia’s first Indigenous theatre. People living in frost-prone areas should cover their water meters to protect them from freezing, Western Water has advised. The company is warning that water cannot pass through frozen meters, halting the supply of hot water. “There are plenty of options for covering your meter, including a large bucket, cardboard and plastic box, half a tyre, a hessian bag or an old blanket,” customer and community relations manager Graham Holt said. “Ensure the meter is fully covered to trap the warmer air inside.”

Donating is in the blood
Parents push for playground in Gisborne
By Serena Seyfort Sunbury’s Robert Henley has been named a ‘bloody legend’ for exceeding the milestone of 50 lifesaving blood donations this National Blood Donor Week. The 57-year-old policeman has been giving blood since he was 18. Mr Henley said he vowed to donate blood as soon as he reached the legal age after a blood transfusion saved his life when he was 14. As a teenager he needed donor blood after a pushbike accident ruptured his spleen. “I said I’d return the favour,” he said. “It’s been with me ever since. “Whenever I could I’ve called into the blood bank.” This week the Australian Red Cross Blood Service is thanking exceptional donors such as Mr Henley to mark National Blood Donor Week (June 11-17). Blood service spokesperson Wendy Todd said she hoped Mr Henley’s efforts would inspire more Sunbury residents to become bloody legends. “National Blood Donor Week is the time to take that first step of making an appointment to give blood,” said Ms Todd. She said winter was traditionally a tough time for the blood service because many donors couldn’t give blood due to cold and flu symptoms. “We’d love to see some new donors give blood at Sunbury Blood Donor Centre to help ensure that we maintain blood stocks over the winter period.” Mr Henley also encouraged others to donate. “It’s such a simple process. Gisborne parents are rallying for the construction of a playground on vacant land at Gisborne Fields reserve. An online campaign has been started and parents have presented written and oral submissions to Macedon Ranges council. Mother-of-two Natasha Sweeney told the council there was no park or playground within suitable walking distance for young children in this part of Gisborne. Ms Sweeney first raised the idea of a playground at the reserve in a Facebook group. “Hundreds of comments came back saying they wanted a playground there,” she said. She has since created a Gisborne Fields Playground Group on Facebook which has so far attracted more than 70 followers. In the council’s draft 2017-18 budget, $100,000 is earmarked to develop the grassy lot at Gisborne Fields, but it does not specify what would be developed. Ms Sweeney said residents were so keen for a playground at the reserve that they would even be willing to fundraise. “We’d be happy to get our own funding if we need to,” she said. MY PLACE Bullengarook mother-of-four Julie Madden found her passion and purpose in hypnotherapy. Now 15 years on, she is helping others do the same. She speaks to Serena Seyfort about getting into the field. What’s your connection with the Macedon Ranges?

What’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area?
What did you do before you got into hypnotherapy?
I enjoy the local community markets, especially Gisborne. It is nice to meet friends for a cuppa and cake or to go to my favourite Chinese restaurant in Gisborne. I also enjoy seeing the wide variety of colour when the different trees are in their autumn foliage.
I worked in marketing and PR at Mowbray College in Melton for over six years. I also worked with student committees. I met many inspiring young people. I am still in contact with some of them. What made you become a hypnotherapist?
What are you passionate about? There are many things! In my work I am passionate about helping people change. In particular I love helping people discover their life purpose and helping remove obstacles to them being successful. I am passionate about the value of Montessori education for preserving self-esteem and building confidence in young children.
That I have made two school libraries. I am a bookaholic and believe it is important for children to be encouraged to read. With so much technology available to young people it is important to teach them how to research and check information rather than accepting everything they read online without questioning it.

I had work related stress disorder. A friend recommended hypnotherapy to stop my stress response. One session disappeared all that suffering and I decide that I wanted to be able to help others. I trained as a hypnotherapist and ego state therapist. Now, 15 years later, as well as helping people I train and supervise therapists.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
What is the best thing about the Macedon Ranges?
I also teach Parent Effectiveness Training which is based on assertive communication. Assertive parents grow assertive, resilient, respectful, responsible children and through them there is more chance for peace in the world.
What hats do you wear in the community? In the past I was heavily involved in establishing Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-School and spent many years on the Board of Gisborne Montessori School. I have run women’s
After living in the area for so long it is hard to say. The view from Mount Macedon, wildflowers in the Wombat State Forest, hearing koalas calling in the bush, markets, art shows and galleries – there so many interesting, out of the way places to visit. But I guess catching up with old friends has to top the list.

ands-on experiences play a vital part in learning. Sacred Heart College Kyneton offers a broad range of experiences for students to ensure they are exposed to many and varied activities – giving them a taste of the wider world. The College conducts and supports a wide variety of co-curricular activities for students, encouraging them to participate in line with their ability, skill level and interest. A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Braemar College “At Braemar College, we continue to take great pride in the culture and environment offered to our students. In our 41st year, the family culture and community engagement has never been stronger. There are now three volunteer trips (to international and local locations) available to Braemar students where they contribute to the local communities - this reinforces a strong moral compass and sense of community. The College structure has a distinction between Senior School (Years 9-12) and Middle School (Years 5-8), rather than the traditional Primary (P-6) and Secondary (7-12). This structure allows for a learning environment that is more appropriate for the age and stage development of the Year 5-8 students. The curriculum structure within Braemar’s Middle School involves a unique approach whereby all subjects are incorporated within five learning areas: Encounter, Investigate, Create, Being and Language. This structure is designed so that Middle School students have a maximum of six teachers, thereby enabling teachers to really know their students and vice versa. It also facilitates the development of strong teacher-student relationships. Braemar’s Middle School offers a point of difference from other schools in the local area. It represents a recognition of a child’s key formative years - the most critical time to develop, support, encourage and inspire our young adults. The poem, “What is a Middle Schooler?” by J. L. Parks, describes Middle School students as “in-progress paradigms of possibility in whose lives we plant a lesson, shape a behaviour, mould a character, and seal a destiny. s I reflect on the past 90 years, I am filled with great pride. Just think of the number of scientists, artists, chefs, accountants and other careers we have developed from these very doors. SPORT Lions shake off the predictable tag, boost confidence The Sunbury Lions are losing their predictability and that is delivering massive benefits for the Ballarat Football League side. Having spent the first part of the season learning on the go, the Lions are starting to play consistent football for longer periods. On Saturday, the Lions had their best win of the season so far by capturing the scalp of Redan. It was the first time this season they’ve beaten a team above them on the ladder. Lions coach Ben Jordan described his players’ efforts as sensational. “We hadn’t beaten a team above us, but I felt it was coming for a while,” he said. “We had really good pressure and contested footy. A win like this brings confidence.” Jordan said better ball movement was the key to getting the win. Skipper Andrew Duhau and his midfield partners, Greg Hay and Tom Donoghue, along with ruckman David Kovacevic, set up the win. “There hasn’t been a lot of periods where we’ve had good ball movement,” Jordan said. We had been a bit predictable. We got the ball
moving and got it in cleanly and to dangerous spots. “We have worked on it a lot … we need to rotate and create different forward options, and in the second quarter we were able to do that.” The Lions, who had 11 goal scorers, weren’t able to apply the same pressure on the scoreboard in the second half, but Jordan said their defence stood strong at the other end. He said the likes of Dwain Sanderson and Reece Wood were building some good defensive chemistry. The win is the Lions’ second in a row and fourth for the season. They are fifth on the
ladder ahead of a clash with Ballarat that will be the last of the Lions four match streak of playing matches in Ballarat. Jordan said leading goal-kicker Ben Said, a late withdrawal on Saturday, would return but didn’t think there would be many other changes. “Ballarat had a bye this week,” Jordan said. “They’re another side which runs the footy well and can score quick goals. There’s no point having a win like we did if we can’t back it up. “If we could win three out of four on the road, we would love it.” Tara Murray

Sprinter goes for gold By Tara Murray Riddells Creek’s Jessie Andrew is hoping to put a mixed season behind her as she heads to Fiji looking for gold. A torn hamstring derailed the young sprinters athletic season, but she still showed enough to be selected in the Australian team for the Oceania Melanesian regional championships next month. She’s looking to defend her 200 metre title in the under-18s she won last year at the same event, while this year she’ll also compete in the 100 metres. “It’s not every day you get to represent your country, it’s a privilege,” she said. “I’m looking to defend my title in the 200 metres. The 100 metres isn’t my strongest event, but I’ll give it my best shot.” Andrew was selected in the Australian team following her performances across the athletic season and at the national titles. to admit that the season didn’t pan out how she wanted it to. “They looked at the times I performed across the whole season and they think I’m in a position to medal in Fiji. “At the national titles in March, my 200 metres was a little disappointing to be honest. I came fifth. “My 200 metres wasn’t as strong this season, but it was still pretty good I guess. “My 100 metres was strong, but as I tore my hamstring, so I didn’t run a lot of 100 metres. When I did though, I ran a personal best every time. “The 100 metres [at the nationals] I came seventh which was pretty average.” The trip to Fiji is the second time this year that Andrew has travelled overseas for her sport. She was part of Maribyrnong College’s team which travelled to the Simplot Games in America. Andrew competed in the 200 metres and was part of the 4 x 200 metre team which
won gold. “I came fourth in the 200 metres which was a little disappointing,” she said. “It was a strong field of girls in our age group. Most of the girls were 18, turning 19. “I had just turned 17 so I was one of the youngest. “It was a great experience in America where they have so many outstanding sprinters.” The year 11 has her eyes set on making the Olympics in the future. She’s well aware of the time and sacrifices needed to even have a chance to get that far. Each day she travels from Riddells Creek to go to school and train at Maribyrnong College. On a good day it takes an hour and 15 minutes each way. “There’s a lot of hard work and commitment, but I’m willing to do what it takes. “My coach [Darren Clark] is at Maribyrnong College. I go to school and train and get everything done and then I go home and I can relax.”
Sunbury United’s season is slowly getting back on track with a second straight win in FFV state league 3 north-west. Among the bottom teams in the division, United had just one win from its first nine games. After a victory against Melbourne City last weekend, United faced bottom side Melbourne University on Saturday. In a must win game, United was never challenged winning 4-1. Joe Cavoli, promoted from the reserves, opened the scoring in the 16th minutes and when he scored his second in the 29th minute, United doubled the lead. It was a hat trick for Cavoli when he scored his third in the 50th minute before Djafari Mwarabu scored United’s fourth in the 85th minute. University scored a consultation goal in the 90th minute. Heading into the game, director of football operations’ Greg Czapnik said the game was the most important game of the season for the club. “You don’t want to finish in the bottom three,” he said. “A win would make the gap even bigger on the bottom couple of sides and automatic relegation. A loss would mean the season would border on the critical stage. “This club has gone through some dire times. We can’t afford to go down another division.” Czapnik said while the results showed a 3-1-7 record, it could have been much different. The one area United has struggled in is its ability to convert opportunities. “We need to put our chances away,” he said. “There’s only two games we deserved to lose. Realistically if you don’t put the chances away it destroys you and puts the pressure back on the defenders. “You can look at the number of games we’ve thrown away.” With 11 games left, United sits 10th on the ladder but is now only two points behind Heidelberg Stars and out of possible relegation. The bottom two sides are relegated while the third bottom side faces a play off to survive. United’s next match is against third placed Williamstown. In state league 5 west, Gisborne’s good form continued with a 4-1 win against Maidstone United. Kyneton District’s got its first points of the season with a 1-1 draw with Moonee Valley Knights. Cannon builds strength By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Dylan Landt spent plenty of time in the gym over the summer with Calder Cannons teammate Jack Bytel. Landt, who was heading into his top age year with the Cannons, was keen to take his game to the next level. “I spoke with Johno [Cannons coach Andrew Johnston] about what I needed to do and one of the biggest things was working on winning the contested ball,” he said last week. “I did a lot work to get stronger to give myself more confidence to go in and get the ball. “I was doing three gym sessions a week to build up my upper body strength. I was training with Jack, he helped a lot with the work over summer.” Landt, along with Bytel, were both named in the initial squads for Vic Metro’s under-18 team to compete at National Championships. Despite two stints on the sidelines for Landt through injury, the two mates were named in the final squad for the championships which started on Saturday. “Jack and I are good mates so I’m rapt to see him get through as well,” Landt said. “I feel honoured and privileged to be part of the group. It’s reward for all my hard work, but there’s still a lot of hard work still to do.” Having fractured his radius in the preseason followed by a broken metacarpal, the diehard Collingwood supporter at one stage thought his chances of being selected were over. “It was a bit of a setback with the injuries,” he said. “The one positive was they were both hand injuries. I could still run and keep my fitness. “I doubted myself but I came back at the right time for the last trial match and played my role well doing the things the coaches wanted. “I’m fully confident in my body now.” Now in the final squad, the half back whose biggest asset is speed, knows there’s no guarantees of getting a game. “I’m hoping to try and play as many games as possible. I’d love to play them all.” Landt, who models his game on Greater Western Sydney young gun Josh Kelly, was always going to play football. He started playing at Sunbury Lions, before moving across to Rupertswood. Last season he returned to the Lions. “My family is footy mad and I love it,” he said. “All my brothers played. “My brother [Jack] was playing at Sunbury and I was trying to play with him which is why I went back. “It didn’t work out that way, but I still have plenty of mates there and Sunbury has been really good for me.” Despite what may come later in the year, Landt firmly has his sights on the next few weeks. “I haven’t thought about AFL at this stage,” he said. “There’s a lot of work to go before we even get to the draft. I’ll start thinking about it later in the year. “I’m more worried about playing good footy and hopefully getting some games with Metro.”

Hawks hope to maintain form Woodend-Hesket may be coming off its biggest win in years, but Hawks coach Ross Sleight says it means nothing if they can’t keep the momentum going. The Hawks have had a disappointing start to the season, with just two wins, which have come against two of the bottom sides of the competition. In their most recent game the Hawks dismantled a struggling Broadford by 186 points, with their most complete performance of the season. Coming off five losses heading into that game, Sleight said while they were hopeful of a win, their form hadn’t been convincing. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure how it would go,” he said. “We’ve not been playing our best football for four quarters. “We knew if we brought our A-game we would be fine. We didn’t expect that margin … we didn’t take our foot off the pedal. “Confidence was a little down after the last few weeks, so it was important to play well for the whole game.” Sleight said if they had been able to produce the same football they had against Broadford in their other matches, the win-loss record may look a little better. “The last five weeks we’ve been playing three good quarters and the quarter we’re playing bad is costing us. “We played Riddell and we thought the game could go either way. We were down by a fair bit at half-time and won the second half. “Against Rupo it was a fair margin. While against Macedon and Diggers Rest [one and two on the ladder] we lost by about 40 points and played some good footy. It was our first quarter which let us down.” Having started to find some form, Sleight said the competition bye had come at the wrong time for his side. He said despite a few niggling injuries and a few players overseas the side was in good shape. Cam Arnold, who broke his collarbone in round one, returned to the side against Broadford, kicking 8.4. The Hawks return to the field this week against Rockbank. With several matches against other sides outside the top six coming up, Sleight hasn’t ruled out playing finals. “When we play our best football we can give anyone a shake,” he said. “Hopefully we can win those games and play well against some of the top sides and give ourselves a chance of sneaking a few extra wins.” Tara Murray

Sunbury splits the points in the battle of the Lions The Sunbury Lions didn’t come away with a win for the first time this season on Saturday, but they didn’t walk away empty handed either. In the battle of the Lions, Sunbury and Redan, the two teams couldn’t be split and had to come away with a draw in the Ballarat Netball League. Redan jumped the Lions and led by five goals at quarter time. They still held that margin at half time and were still three goals up at three quarter time. The Lions were able to level the scores in the final quarter, but couldn’t get the win. Chloe Curran shot 30 goals for the Lions, but her shooting percentage of 75 per cent was lower than normal. Speaking before the match, Lions coach
Adam Boldiston said they were in the middle of a tough period where they played four straight weeks in Ballarat. Sitting on top of the ladder, with a 7-1 record, he said they were happy with how they had started the season with a completely different team from last season. “It’s been a good start and we’ve had some tests the last few weeks,” he said. “The match against Sebastopol was billed as a real test as they were undefeated and it was a bit of an unknown for me. “We were switched on from the word go. We’ve had some real tests, but the score lines have blown out.” Having been able to get wins on the board, the Lions have been working on settling their
best line-ups. Boldiston said he thought they had a better idea of that now and was confident in what all the players brought to the side. “We’ve been switching up the midcourt and defensive combos and working out the best ones. “All eight players on the court are capable and there’s depth and flexibility and we can always go to the player on the bench.” Boldiston said when needed they would look at bringing up players from the lower grades. Amanda Cuscak has had opportunities in the shooting circle and is likely to get a few more games when Curran isn’t available due to Victorian Netball League commitments.
Boldiston has been thrilled with her development. Three other B-grade players have had court time in A-grade, including Nicole Isles who played up for the first time on Saturday. The standout thing for the Lions this season has been their depth. Boldiston said that would be important later in the season. While the A-grade side suffered their first blemish of the season, the B-grade and C-grade sides remain undefeated. Sunbury Tigers enjoy the feeling as victories mount up Sunbury Tigers are setting themselves for a big second half to the Victorian Rugby League first division season. Traditionally one of the powerhouses of the VRL, the Tigers have struggled in the past few years, firstly losing access to Melbourne Storm players and then having an exodus from the club. Putting that behind them, the Tigers now find themselves in a good place on and off the field. Senior coach Sione Ah Kuoi said the feeling around the club was good. “What’s attracting players is we offer a strong family environment,” he said. “We have double the number of players we had last season. “The players are taking ownership and responsibility for the club. The players are contributing with functions and really wanting to be involved.” The Tigers are thriving on the field, as well.
The influx of players has allowed them to again field a reserves side. While the reserves have yet to win a game, the side has given the club much-needed depth. “At this time last year we were fourth,” said Ah Kuoi of the senior side. “We got really depleted with injuries and work commitments. At one stage last year, we had five under-18s playing – and they had already played a game. We ended up finishing eighth.” The senior team is third on the ladder with five wins, including winning its last four games. On Saturday, the Tigers easily accounted for Northern Thunder 56-24. It was a sweet win after the Tigers lost to the Thunder in round one, a game Ah Kuoi thought they should have won by 10 points. He said the Tigers, who only have five players from last year, have their eyes firmly focussed on playing finals. Ah Kuoi believes there won’t be a repeat of last year’s fadeout given the club’s
greater depth. The Tigers have a number of stars this season, including three players in the state squad. Terry Constantinou, who returned to the club this season after not playing last year, is in the squad, along with full-back Tiaan Wilkins, from New Zealand, and Samisoni Fusi, who is one of the leading try scorers in the VRL. Fusi was part of Tonga’s World Cup squad. The Tigers will face second-placed Werribee Bears on Saturday. It’ll be a big weekend for the Tigers, with Scott McEntee, who is playing in the reserves, becoming the first Tiger to play 200 VRL games. Thunder rolls over Jacana By Tara Murray East Sunbury produced arguably the best win of the club’s history against Jacana on Saturday in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Thunder weren’t expected to get near Jacana. In fact most people expected the Jaguars to smash them. But the script didn’t go to plan. The Thunder outworked the Jaguars and wanted the ball more. When they had the ball in hand, they used it well and had options up forward. The Thunder did the damage in the second quarter kicking eight goals to three to open up a lead. The lead got out 47 points in the third quarter, before the Jaguars kicked the last three goals of the quarter to reduce the margin to 28 points at the last change. Early in the last the Jaguars, who had won every last quarter for the season, had a shot to bring the margin back within three goals, but it missed. It was to be the Thunder’s day though, as they kicked goals late to seal a 23.9 (147)-16.8 (104) win. Thunder coach Steve Grey said it was a day when everything had come together. “Everyone rose to the occasion,” he said. “All the kids didn’t worry about what players they were playing on. They worried about the footy and implementing what I try to teach them. “Our attack and hunger for the football has been there this year. Why we haven’t won more games is our skill and execution. “Today Jacana gave us a bit more space and we executed well even when they did put us under pressure at times, we took some really good options. “We haven’t kicked 23 goals against a quality side like Jacana.” The other real pleasing thing for Grey was the side being able to play out the game instead of playing well for just three quarters. With several key players out with injury, more than a third of the Thunder team was under-19. Ash Fleming was the only Thunder on the ground who had played more than 100 games of senior football. He took on the hardest task on the ground, playing on Cameron Cloke. Cloke kicked nine goals, but Fleming still played a crucial role, especially late in the game. Up forward for the Thunder, Tom Burnside had a break-out game, kicking six goals. Grey said Burnside’s second and third efforts were the more pleasing thing. Star onballer Tom Cree, who was best on ground, said the big difference was that the side believed that they could get the win. “A lot of times the team hasn’t felt that they’ve been able to beat the better teams,” he said. “We really gelled together and it’s starting 32 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 13, 2017

to feel like it’s coming together, where it hasn’t throughout the start of the season. “We believe that we can do it now. Finals is really in our eyes and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
The win moves the Thunder to just one game behind third and fourth. This week they face winless Keilor Park with the chance to win three straight games for the first time in the club’s history.
Bulldogs snap into action Gisborne was jolted into action at three quarter-time, to record its second straight win in the Bendigo Football League. The Bulldogs found themselves in the unusual position of entering a match as favourites and a win-less Maryborough side made sure for three quarters they had a fight on their hands. The Bulldogs trailed by four points at three quarter-time, but found another level in the last quarter kicking five goals to none to win 15.12 (102)-11.8 (74). Bulldogs’ coach Brad Spear said it wasn’t an outstanding game, but he was pleased with how the players stood up in the final quarter. “Maryborough was in front at three quarter-time and it was a shock and jolted the boys into action,” he said. “There was stern words and they responded. “We started doing the right things and managed to get the score on the board.” Spear said going into the match as favourites was something the side would have to learn to adjust to. “It brought a different pressure with the expectation to win. “Maryborough would have been looking at the opportunity for them to get their maiden win. “Our players are going to have to learn to deal with that if they are going to improve.” Jake Conolan kicked four goals for the Bulldogs, and Clinton Young, Jaidyn Owen and Thomas Wood kicked three goals each. It was the Dogs’ leaders who led the way. Skipper Jarrad Lynch was named best on ground along with playing assistant coach Young. Trent Crosbie and Riley Paterson also had good games. The win moves the Bulldogs to seventh on the ladder, two games outside the top five. Spear said despite that, finals were not on the radar. “Against a couple of the sides that have been up the top we’ve been really competitive,” Spear said. “It’s a good indication of improvement from the last couple of years. “It’d be really good if we could have a win against a top side and give us some confidence.” Meanwhile, it was another case of so close but so far for Kyneton against Golden Square.
