It doesn’t matter where you come from – it’s about where you go. That’s the message that Sunbury schoolgirl Chloe O’Rourke hopes to project through her commitment to horse riding. Eleven-year-old Chloe was Sunbury Primary School’s solo representative in its debut at Bacchus Marsh Grammar Interschool Dressage and Showjumping Day last Friday. Donning her school uniform, Chloe represented the small public school with poise and was placed equal second in the dressage event. Chloe’s mother Sharon O’Rourke said Chloe wanted to show that competing was about determination and support rather than wealth. Ms O’Rourke said Chloe trained every day in the lead-up to the competition with support from Sunbury Pony Club’s teachers and past riders. The club also paid for Chloe’s entry into the event. Fight for Jacksons Hill By Serena Seyfort Sunbury residents have called on the state’s leading heritage body to step in and save the heritage-listed buildings at the former Victorian University Sunbury campus. Residents fear the buildings are “going to rack and ruin,” after being neglected by VU, making them an easy target for vandals. Sunbury Residents Association president Peter Free said they feel Victoria University is not looking after the buildings. “The buildings are sitting here decaying,” he said. Despite guards being employed at the site

24/7, windows were being broken and people were breaking into the buildings. Mr Free, who is also Sunbury Historical and Heritage Society president, said that many people he took on heritage tours could not believe the state of the buildings. “People are astonished that nothing’s being done.” According to the Victorian Heritage Register, the Jacksons Hill site, originally known as Caloola, began as an industrial school in 1864. It is one of only two of the original 12 industrial schools still standing in Victoria. It served as a mental hospital from 1879 until it became a training centre for the intellectually

disabled in 1962. Victoria University was given possession of part of Caloola in 1944, but stopped using the property as a campus at the end of 2009. Victoria University is still responsible for maintaining its part of the site, the remainder of the site is used by the Department of Education and Training. Mr Free wrote to Victorian Heritage Council earlier this month on behalf of the residents association, “seeking immediate sanctions against Victoria University under the Heritage Act for wilful neglect of the Sunbury campus”. A Victoria University spokesperson told Star Weekly the university had continued to spend more than $400,000 each year on security and

essential building maintenance and utilities since 2009. “For the last two years Victoria University has employed external facility managers to maintain the upkeep of the site at Jackson’s Hill,” the spokesperson said. “From June 1, VU will take responsibility for the upkeep of the site, including maintaining lawns and gardens, general repairs and maintenance, 24-hour, seven-days-a-week security presence.” The spokesperson said the university had been in talks with the community and state government to find other parties interested in taking over the site.

Firey hoses down CFA concerns By Serena Seyfort Proposed changes to the structure of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) would not adversely impact Sunbury, claims Sunbury fire station operations officer Mark Owen. The state government released a plan earlier this month that, if approved by Parliament, would make the CFA a volunteer-only organisation. The proposal involves establishing a new organisation, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV),

that would oversee all career firefighters in Melbourne and major regional areas. The change has led many to question where that leaves the CFA’s 35 integrated stations which currently have career firefighters and volunteers. Mr Owen said it would be “business as usual” at the Sunbury integrated station. “Instead of it being an integrated station it will be a co-location. The FRV truck will just be parked next to the CFA truck,” he said. Mr Owen said the plan would simply define career firefighters.

“The CFA will just be a volunteer service, as it was originally designed to be.” He said the change would not affect citizens in any way. “As far as the community is concerned they will still call triple-0 and a truck will come.” The state government has also proposed new laws that give all firefighters equal access to compensation for cancers contracted while in the line of duty. “We have introduced legislation into Parliament [last] week to deliver long-awaited

presumptive rights to cancer compensation for both volunteer and career firefighters,” said Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas. A package of more than $100 million for CFA brigades has been proposed to help the CFA with training, equipment and facilities if the planned reforms go ahead. “I am working with a number of brigades that want training and need station upgrades to ensure volunteers in Macedon get their fair share of this additional funding,” Ms Thomas said.

Work to do on Black Hill plan

Black Hill Reserve’s management proposals have mostly been given the green light, but two controversial issues have been put on hold. The reintroduction of threatened wildlife species and the construction of a predator-proof fence around the reserve will remain in limbo until further community consultation is carried out. Macedon Ranges council voted for more research into both issues at the May 24 council meeting, with councillors divided on the propositions. “I don’t want to turn any of our reserves into zoos,” mayor Jennifer Anderson told the meeting. The draft environmental management plan for the reserve was released for public feedback between December 2, 2016, and March 10, 2017. Last week the council adopted the plan with a number of changes based upon the feedback. A predator-proof fence and a threatened species reintroduction program were supported by the majority of those who submitted feedback, but not by Friends of Black Hill Reserve, a group formed in 1979 for the site’s rehabilitation. Their concerns related to the impact on the free movement of wildlife, cost and the effect on existing plant and animal species. The plan also outlined preparation of a preliminary Aboriginal heritage assessment and a continued ban on horse riding, mountain bikes and motorbikes and firewood collection. The plan will be implemented in partnership with the Friends of Black Hill and the local community, subject to budget allocations.

Macedon Ranges streets ahead By Serena Seyfort

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the trail’s upgrade will benefit the local community and visitors to the area. “This is all about enhancing the vibrant and varied tourism offerings within Kyneton and improving community health and social inclusion by providing a safe, shared and accessible trail for everyone,” Ms Thomas said. Signs will be installed to direct visitors to Kyneton’s main features such as the botanic gardens, racecourse, museum and Piper Street. Macedon Ranges council said a start date for these works has not yet been set.

Road and footpath restorations are improving safety and sprucing up the Macedon Ranges. Redevelopment of Kyneton’s walking and cycling trail along Campaspe River has been given the go-ahead by the state government, announcing a $300,000 grant last week. The $400,000 project will improve links between Kyneton’s key retail, transport and recreation centres with the construction of a one kilometre long, 2.5 metre wide concrete shared trail with five footbridges.

Numerous other road and footpath improvements are being undertaken by the council before the winter weather sets in. The addition of new guardrails and a new anti-slip surface are about to begin on Ashbourne Road, Woodend. The upgrades are part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot program. The road was the scene of a fatality in July 2015, and several other road incidents have resulted in casualties. A wider, sealed surface is also on the way for Chanters Lane in Tylden, with works expected

to be complete by June 2. In the coming weeks Lyell Street, Gisborne will gain 20 new parking bays. Chambers Road, Ashbourne is closed from Falloons Road to Taylor Road until the end of June for drainage works while works on the footpaths of Hamilton, Aitken and Brantome streets in Gisborne should be completed by mid-June. The construction of a timber boardwalk under the railway bridge along Nursery Road, Macedon is also under way, and due to be finished by June 30.

Goonawarra Primary School was taken over by superheroes on a mission to raise funds for the Red Shield Appeal last Friday. Wonder Woman and BatGirl were popular costume choices among the girls, while Superman was favored by the boys, said teacher Rhiannon Lo Bosco. “The younger kids got right into the theme,” Ms Lo Bosco said. The students raised $371.85 from gold coin donations, with the money going towards the Red Shield Appeal. Mobile coverage still in the dark By Serena Seyfort Macedon Ranges phone and internet black spots have been overlooked in the next round of the federal government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. The area has not been listed as a government priority location, so will not get any of the $60 million allocated in the 2017-18 federal budget for 125 new base stations in round three of the program. Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said she was

“bitterly disappointed” that the more than 100 black spots in the Macedon Ranges would not receive even a single new tower. “The number of black spots in the area has been well established,” she said. “The federal, state, and local governments are aware of them. “The government say they prioritise areas that are at risk of bushfire, and areas of productivity and farming – that’s the Macedon Ranges.” Absent and poor telecommunications coverage in the region impedes safety, business

productivity, education, social connectedness and access to services, a 2014 study into Macedon Ranges telecommunications black spots found. “No warning text messages received when

large fire threatened Gisborne South this summer,” one survey participant said. “Relatives and friends are quite often unable to contact us at times of power loss – this is a concern if there is an emergency,” said another. Other responders said their lack of reception made it difficult to work and study from home. Ms Chesters said she was unaware of any details about future funding under the program. Star Weekly sought comment from the federal government.

Lamb raises the baaa Saturday is not your average lamb – she trots around thanks to a cart, sleeps in a “race car” and receives care on call. Or on bleat, if you prefer. Born on a New South Wales hobby farm, this little Suffolk ewe struggled to walk. Saturday’s owners sent her to Edgar’s Mission, Lancefield’s not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farm animals, in hope of a good outcome for their lamb. Saturday was found to have congenital plasticity, meaning her back legs don’t work in a synchronised way with her brain’s messages. The Edgar’s mission solution was a customised cart, with the wheels serving as her inactive hind legs. Edgar’s Mission founder and director Pam Ahern said Saturday proved that animals are individuals. “She’s very determined – everyone who works with her is overcome by her willingness to face adversity,” Ms Ahern said.

She said Saturday cheekily considered the Edgar’s Mission workers as her slaves. “She sleeps in what looks like a racing car so that she can’t topple over in the night,” she said. “And she just bleats out when she wants something.” Saturday is loved and looked after – her owners send money to Edgar’s Mission every month to assist with her needs. Even the way this lamb got her name is unique. “It’s really funny – she actually came to us on a Sunday,” Ms Ahern said. “It was at a time when we were naming lambs by days of the week, and we already had every day of the week except Saturday.” Serena Seyfort Kyle Behrend with Saturday and her customised cart. A truck rolled on Mount Macedon Road near Cheniston Road just after 2pm on Wednesday, May 24. It took emergency services 70 minutes to free the male driver, aged in his 30s, before he was airlifted to hospital with serious leg and pelvic injuries. MY PLACE Long-time local and noted historian Phyllis Boyd loves being immersed in the Gisborne community. She was presented with Queen’s Birthday honours last year, receiving an Order of Australia medal for her service to heritage preservation. She speaks with Serena Seyfort. What is your connection to the Macedon Ranges and how are you involved in the community? I bought land in the valley of Mount Macedon in 1979, and moved into Gisborne 13 years ago. I work for the Gisborne Region Events Activities and Tourism (GREAT) Association, which was set up to entice tourists to the district. Since GREAT was offered management of the monthly Gisborne market in 2002, I have managed and organised it. I also work one day a week at Gisborne and Mount Macedon Districts Historical society. For 27 years I was either secretary or president, but for the last two years I’ve been vice president. I’m pretending that I’m trying to ease back a little bit now that I’ll be 80 on my next birthday! What do you love most about the area? I love the wonderful, volunteering, community feel. Gisborne has grown exponentially but it still has that lovely country feel. People still say “good morning” to each other when they walk down the street. What would you change about the area? I wouldn’t change anything that has happened, but I would like to see a curbing of denser development in the town. We can cope with what we’ve got. (Joe Mastroianni)

As a historian, what’s something interesting to note about the area? When Gisborne first started it was principally an agricultural area. But now, unless they have businesses in the town, most people commute to Melbourne for work.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reckons he’s found Melbourne’s best Malaysian … We enjoyed our visit to Ya’Salam when the premises were being used to operate a Somalian eatery – though, truth be told, it was a bit too much of a drive to become a regular haunt. Now there’s new management in the place. They’ve retained the name – and even a page of Somalian food at the back of the new menu … but the rest is all about terrific Malaysian food. In fact, based on two visits, we reckon this is some of the best, cheapest and most authentic Malaysian food you’ll find in all of Melbourne. And word appears to have gotten out – we note with assured pleasure the happy, hungry tables of customers on our visits. Chicken laksa ($10) is unlike any I’ve eaten – and as good as any, too. The chicken is so finely shredded that it’s pretty much subsumed into the gravy, but that’s fine when the soup base is so funky, house-made and delicious. Protein oomph is provided by two hardboiled egg halves, and there’s plenty of cucumber and other vegie bits to provide texture and crunch to go with the fat, short udon-style noodles. Roti canai ($5) is a wonder. Accompanying a just-right bowl of runny chicken curry (with a dob of sambal paste) are the two lightest, flakiest and best flatbreads of the Malaysian style we’ve ever eaten. Simply – wow. Char kuey teow ($10) is a bit like our laksa – unlike any we’ve before tried. This one comes in a bowl and – appropriately

YA’SALAM RESTAURANT Address: 2/14 Lavinia Drive, Tarneit Phone: 9748 6860 – is more like a hearty, thick soup than the drier dish we’ve been expecting. No problems, though – because while the wok hei factor is predictably muted, there’s no doubting the flavours and all-round yumminess. Given the obvious real-deal vibe of everything served us thus far, we are keen to try the Ya’Salam satays. They’re unavailable, though, so we happily settle for two fine curry puffs ($1 each). Again, these are a far cry from your usual curry puffs. The rich short pastry is stuffed with an extremely toothsome jumble of chicken mince and vegetables. They could’ve been a tad hotter, however. The Ya’Salam food we’ve tried has been really fine. We’re usually not much concerned about notions of authenticity – but they have heaps of it here. Next time, we’ll be sure to try one of the many nasi goreng variations. SPORT Undefeated Roos step up under pressure Sunbury Kangaroos have faced their toughest test in AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League and passed it with flying colours. The Kangaroos had won both their grading games and their first two games of the division 1 season quite easily. But on Sunday, they didn’t have it all their own way against East Point. The Kangaroos had a lot of the ball in their forward half in the first two quarters, but weren’t able to convert on the scoreboard. East Point kicked the first two goals of the game. The Kangaroos went up a level in the second half to open up a decent lead as rain started falling.

East Point came again and had its best period of football in the final quarter by continuing to attack and put the pressure back on the Kangaroos. But it wasn’t enough, with the Kangaroos’ winning 5.11 (41)-5.2 (32). Kyrstie Smith, Bailee Said and Tayla Behan were named the Kangaroos’ best. Kangaroos playing coach Danni Green said it was good for the side to be challenged after having four easy wins. “The pressure was on from the start from East Point, which we haven’t always had,” she said. “We had a lot more play in the first half, but East Point’s pressure didn’t let us get the goals.

“It took us a little time to get into the game and I’m really proud of the girls and how they stood up to that pressure and played our best football in the second half.” After playing their best football in the third quarter, the senior players delighted Green with how they stepped up late when the pressure was on with East Point doing all the attacking. The win was soured somewhat thanks to injuries to Jess Dominko (knee) and Brittany Mifsud (face). Both were taken to hospital for scans. With Dominko on the sidelines, it was left to Terena Burridge to step up and take the ruck role, earning praise from Green. The win leaves the Kangaroos one of two

teams undefeated in division 1. The other is their next opponent, North Geelong. Green said it would be good to test the kangaroos against the best team in the competition. She said her team, in its first season, had already exceeded expectations. “We focus on what we can control and the scoreboard is a bonus,” she said. “We’re ecstatic to be 5-0. What’s even better is we have a good group of girls, supporters and a good club. “I’m sure we’ll have plenty more challenges to come and we’ll continue to enjoy them.” Tara Murray

Tigers rout slow start By Tara Murray Lancefield is on the board for the first time in the Riddell District Football League season. The Tigers have endured a tough start to the season, with coach Ashley Manning resigning after two rounds and no luck on the field. In recent weeks, the Tigers had shown some encouraging signs and on Saturday, against Broadford, they came away with the four points. The Tigers overcame a slow start to overrun the Kangaroos for a 8.15 (63)-7.5 (47) win. For Tigers coach Cameron Wight, victory was sweet relief. “I’m very happy to get one on the board,” he said. “We were really nervy before the game. I was really happy with our second half. Hopefully, we can build from there.” The Tigers didn’t look like winners early on – they trailed the Kangaroos, also without a win, by 32 points at quarter-time. Wight said it had been frustrating as they’d really made a focus on starting games well. “I’ve been trying to get across to the boys, we need to start well in every game,” he said. “We were really flat-footed. It’s something we have to work on. We’re yet to play a full four quarters of football.” While against a lot of the top teams the Tigers’ hopes of a win would have been gone, they worked their way back against the Kangaroos. They kicked the only goal of the second quarter, before producing a strong third quarter and then running away with it in the last. “We were lucky to get a few shots on goal in the third quarter,” Wight said. “I think they ran out of legs a little and we put a spare man back in defence in the third quarter. “We kicked three or four goals to trail by six points going into the last quarter.” Jon Kent kicked three goals in the win, while Myles Dorman was named best on ground. Wight is hoping the win is something his players will build on during the rest of the season. The former AFL ruckman, who won’t return to the field this season after doing an ACL in round one, said he was slowly getting used to the coaching role he will perform for the rest of the season. “It was tough when it [Manning leaving] first happened but everyone is getting around the club,” he said. “More people are showing up to training and the camaraderie is there. From now until the end of the season I want to build a real culture. “It’s a new role and it’s something I can build into.” In other results, Diggers Rest and Macedon had big wins, the Sunbury Kangaroos held off Wallan, Romsey continued its good form against Rupertswood and Riddell accounted for Woodend-Hesket.

Sunbury Jets flying high The Sunbury Jets’ senior sides scored solid wins in Big V basketball action across the weekend. The men’s division 1 side continued its yoyo ways with a third win in five games against Shepparton Gators on Saturday night. The Jets set the win up in the first quarter when they outscored the Gators 27-20. Both sides had periods of control in the next three quarters, the Gators winning the second and fourth quarters and the Jets dominating the third. But the Jets did enough to earn a 76-69 win. Four Jets scored double figures, with Javari Williams leading the way with 18 points. He also had 13 rebounds. Skipper Tepuao Silver had his best game of the season points-wise, scoring 17. The Jets sit fifth in the Terrill division. The women’s state championship side remains undefeated after accounting for Southern Peninsula Sharks on Sunday. Fresh from a weekend off, the Jets jumped out of the blocks with a 20-9 first quarter. The next three quarters were fairly even with one made shot the difference. The Jets extended the margin to 16 points at the final whistle, winning 70-54. Courtney Duever continued her good form with 26 points, while Chelsea Burns and Josie Stockill scored double figures. Sunbury star takes a serious specky outlook to footy When she was growing up, Sunbury’s Maddison Gay was known to take a specky or two on the netball court. Little did she know that several years later she’d be putting those skills to good use on football fields. “I grew up playing netball and basketball with a bit of swimming,” she said. “I wished I played football when I was younger. “My netball style was a bit of a football style. As I was small, I used to leap for the ball and it looked like I was taking a specky. “Mum used to say, ‘Stop taking speckies’. I didn’t even realise I was doing it.” Football remained a side issue for Gay as she developed her netball career. She played most of her netball with Rupertswood before a season with Gisborne. For the past three years she’s been playing in the Victorian Netball League. This year she decided to take the plunge and try football. She joined St Kilda’s VFL side where she had a few friends already playing.

Gay took to the game with ease and after just two games, she signed with Carlton’s AFLW side as a rookie. The Blues were one of several Melbourne-based clubs to approach her. Gay said the sport switch was still sinking in. “It’s unreal and a bit of a shock … it’s happened so quickly,” she said. “It’s surreal and it hasn’t hit home. I don’t think it will until we start training. “I thought Carlton was the best team for me. I spoke with Damian [Keeping, Blues coach] and it seemed like the right club.” The 20-year-old said the minute she started playing football, she knew it was the game for her. She said while it was exciting to have her AFLW future settled, there was a lot of hard work ahead. “I’m looking forward to what happens late in the year, but for now I’m focused on having fun. It’s only just started. “I have a little security with already having a

Romsey romps home By Tara Murray Romsey kept its unblemished record alive with a strong four-quarter performance against a determined Rupertswood side in the Riddell District Netball League. While they had played each other in round one, both sides nominated different looking line-ups and it was a test to see how far each team had come. It was the Sharks who started the better of the two teams and led by three goals early. The Redbacks hit back and lead at the second and third changes, but it was the fourth quarter where they won the game, shooting 17 goals to seven, to win 46-33. Hope Evans was the best of the goalers for the Redbacks shooting 24 goals. Speaking before the game, Redbacks playing coach Lena Way said she couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. “We got pushed the previous weekend against Lancefield and only got there by a goal but we were missing Sarah Szczykulski, Elle McDonald and Hope [Evans]. “Cayley [Armstrong] and Danni [Davidson] were both restricted to playing a half. It showed the depth we’ve got in our team.” Way said they were yet to have their full squad available. Star midcourter Elle McDonald missed the weekend’s match through injury. With the arrival of young Australian Netball League shooter Amelia Brock and Bronwyn Blair returning from injury, Way said it was a luxury to have multiple players who could play every position. “We’re thrilled to have Amelia in our side,” she said. “She’s a championship division player and we’re thrilled to have a tall strong target that can play along with Hope, Chelsea [Ross] and Bronwyn. “She’s only 19 and can play goal attack or goal shooter and would be the tallest girl in the competition.” Way said with several new players in the side this season, the connections and team work continues to be an area to work on. “We did a lot of work pre-season on that, using different combinations to train,” she said. “The girls have got to know each other and the club has an active social calender and gives them an opportunity to bond. “We’ve got five players over 30 and then the younger girls, there’s a really nice mixture. “We’ve got good turnout at training with the Victorian Netball League girls still coming to training even though they can’t do anything at times.” The Redbacks this week face Macedon, the only other undefeated side in the competition. Sunbury Lions have slipped to 2-4 after a loss to Lake Wendouree on Saturday in the Ballarat Football League. Only one point seperated the two teams at three-quarter time. The Lakers kicked five goals to two in the final term to win 11.19 (85)-9.8 (62). Grant Valles kicked three goals for the Lions. Josh Guthrie continued his good form, named in the best for a fifth week. The Lions sit seventh on the ladder.

Gisborne has announced Glenn Waites as its coach for the next Gisborne and District Cricket Association season. Waites, who played in two top grade premierships with the club in the early 1990s, takes over from Simon Harman who stepped down from the role after two seasons.
