From Russia with love Russian sculptor Ilya Filimontsev has spent about 56 hours crafting this sand masterpiece. He is one of eight international artists displaying their sand sculptures at Sand Art Gallery’s exhibition in Romsey. Filimontsev has interpreted the show’s theme ‘The Art of Music’, in his work Birth of Music, depicting a woman being given life from music. Filimonstev studied sculpting in Moscow, working with snow and ice, but sand has been his focus for the past 12 years. He has taken out numerous sculpting awards worldwide. The most talented sculptors from Belgium, Poland, Russia, Ireland, Holland, Singapore, Czech Republic and Canada will be exhibiting their work in the Macedon Ranges, said event organiser Leo Vamvalis. One of the state’s “most dangerous roads” will get a $20 million safety overhaul. Major works will be carried out on a 37kilometre stretch of the Melbourne-Lancefield Road, as part of $20 million allocated in the recent state budget. Separate funding has been allocated for two notorious New Gisborne intersections after a six-year campaign by locals. Planning has already started on improving safety at the Saunders and Station roads intersection and the Pierce and Gisborne-Kilmore roads intersection. Chairman of the Gisborne Roads Group Russell Mowatt said the upgrades were the culmination of six long, hard years of work by the group, Vic Roads, former councillors, various stakeholders and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas. “These works are the start of the big picture,” he said. Mr Mowatt said the works would eventually address the growing traffic volumes along this stretch of arterial road. There are about 18,000 vehicle movements on the road per day, including 1169 heavy vehicles, according to the recent Gisborne Movement Network Study. Ms Thomas said residents had been calling for work at the Saunders Road intersection for years. “It has been raised time and again as a traffic blackspot,” she said. Funding for the Melbourne-Lancefield Road will be used to add overtaking lanes, flexible barriers and rumble strips between Sunbury and Lancefield. Seven new overtaking lanes will enable cars to pass one another safely, and the road shoulder will be widened and sealed. A roundabout will be built at the intersection of Gisborne Kilmore Road, in Monegeetta. More than 150 crashes, including six fatalaties, have occurred on the road between June 2010 and June 2015, according to VicRoads. “Melbourne-Lancefield Road is one of the state’s most dangerous roads,” Sunbury MP Josh Bull said. “We’re going to fix it.” Ms Thomas said the installation of wire rope barriers down Melbourne-Lancefield Road would help prevent head-on crashes. Work will start on the Lancefield to Monegeetta section in September. Upgrades from Monegeetta to Sunbury are expected to begin in November. The work is expected to take 12 months. Fire centre cashed up By Esther Lauaki A new state emergency management institute in Mount Macedon is a step closer, with the state government announcing funding details last week. To get the new institute off the ground, the project will receive a share of $46.2 million earmarked in the state budget to address the shortfall in emergency facilities since the closure of the Fiskville CFA training college in 2015. The project, announced last September, will redevelop the 2.6-hectare Australian Emergency Management Institute site that was closed three years ago. It will include
an overhaul of accommodation facilities, a theatre with tiered seating, a simulation centre and installation of new technology and safety upgrades. At the time of the announcement, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said that emergency services training was “back where it belongs – in Mount Macedon”. “This is a big win for the Mount Macedon community that will boost jobs and the local economy,” she said. A refurbishment of the nearby CFA Huntly base is also in line to share in the funding. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino announced last week the $31 million purchase of a 35-hectare site for a new Victorian
Emergency Management Training Centre in Ballan. Mr Merlino said it was time to “get on with the job of building a safe, world-class training facility”. The government spent $80.7 million to decommission the Fiskville training facility and conduct environmental audits and upgrades at six other operational centres located across regional Victoria. “We closed Fiskville because of the cancer risks – and we won’t stand by until we have new and upgraded firefighting training centres in place,” he said. Development of the Ballan training centre is expected to take about two and a half to three years.
Wheels fall off skate park plans A skate park enthusiast has slammed Hume council’s plans for Sunbury skate park’s redevelopment, calling the design “ridiculous”. Skateboarders called for the park’s expansion in 2015, but the council’s plans propose smaller ramps than the current park, says Sunbury Skate Association secretary Andrew Grimes. “It’s ridiculous. It’s the type of park for a small town,” said Mr Grimes. “My young daughter could do the highest ramp.” Hume’s 2016-17 budget allocated $400,000 for an extension, but the council decided the current park needed a complete rebuild. Mr Grimes, who lobbied to have the park built 15 years ago, said the council hasn’t allocated enough money to rebuild the park to the size that is needed. Concerned by the scale of the plans for the park’s reconstruction, residents raised the issue of obtaining more funding for a larger park at a community consultation session on May 16. The council did not give hope for further funding, said Mr Grimes. Sunbury councillor Ann Potter said the current rebuilding project has about $600,000 and the architects will rebuild the park with the mindset to extend it in future years. “The budget is what it is,” Cr Potter said. But Mr Grimes said he would “absolutely” prefer that the council delay demolishing the current park until a bigger park can be funded. “There’s no point building a new park that we will get bored of in a year anyway,” he said. Cr Potter said that the current budget will be used to start construction as intended. “The development won’t be put off. Something will be built there very soon – as soon as possible.” The council’s redevelopment plans can be viewed on Hume council website. Carpark anger spurs petition Sunbury residents say they have had enough of the town’s carparking woes. The town’s residents association wants the state government to commit money from its $8.7 million railway station carparking fund to provide 100 extra Sunbury commuter car spaces. Sunbury Residents Association president Peter Free said that the parking spaces were promised in 2009 as part of the train line’s electrification. “There is a growing need for additional commuter carparking spaces in Sunbury,” Mr Free said. “It’s a huge issue … we do get the train commuters from the Macedon Ranges who come and park their cars in Sunbury all day adding to parking pressures.” An online petition demanding extra parking capacity picked up more than 200 signatures in two days last week. Stephen Kennedy, who initiated the petition, said Sunbury residents were being “deprived and ignored”. “We as a community have had enough and we demand parking now,” he posted. “Local businesses are also suffering … needless driving around in search of a parking space sees shoppers going elsewhere for their needs. “Driving to Diggers Rest station is not a valid solution … their parking spaces will soon be filled up, too, with all the new housing that is being built there.” The push for more railway station carparking comes on the back of Hume council’s recent proposal to impose a four-hour limit along Pasley Street to deter train commuters monopolising the street all day. The west side of Pasley Street between Gap Road and Cornish Street will be limited to four-hour parking between 9am and 5pm. Council sustainable infrastructure director Peter Waite said residents had indicated widespread support for the measure through a survey that was sent to all properties in the part of the street that would be affected. “Of the responses the council received, more than 90 per cent of respondents were in favour of the proposal,” he said. “This will have the benefit of ensuring there is sufficient space available for residents and their visitors, who may need to come and go through the day and have been inconvenienced by the high level of all-day parking. “All-day parking … will continue on one side of the street.” View the petition online: bit.ly/2rtkUuz Esther Lauaki

Macedon Ranges residents have put pen to paper in a bid to rally support from politicians on environmental issues. The group met in Woodend on May 18 for a letter-writing session in which they addressed local politicians about their opposition to the proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland. Their concerns ranged from damage to the Great Barrier Reef and tourism job losses to increased carbon emissions and Adani’s reputation. Relief for peak rail passengers “It is obviously a step forward, but it’s not a major change to the timetable,” he said. “They don’t appear to be making best use of the track capacity freed up by the opening of the Regional Rail Link.” The $3.6 billion rail link, between Southern Cross Station and west of Werribee, gave V/Line services dedicated lines and created capacity for up to 23 extra metropolitan services an hour when it opened in mid-2015.

Peak-hour commuters on three of Melbourne’s most overcrowded railway lines will get a handful of extra services when a new Metro timetable starts in August. The timetable update will usher in new peak-hour services on the Sunbury, Werribee and Craigieburn lines. The three lines will each get an extra morning peak service and an extra evening peak service on week days, adding 30 new services to the timetable. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said that from August 27, the new services would run where they were most urgently needed. “The new services will make a real difference getting people to work quicker and home sooner,” Ms Allan said. Ms Allan said the government was “adding services and delivering the major projects our network needs”. Passenger growth in Melbourne’s west and north-west is so rapid that demand on the Sunbury and Craigieburn lines is expected to exceed capacity by 2021 or earlier. One solution to coping with that growth, the $11 billion Metro Tunnel, is not due to open until 2026. The first of 65 longer trains the government has ordered, which can comfortably fit 1100 passengers, are due to enter service late next year and will run between Sunbury and Pakenham. Daniel Bowen, spokesman for the Public Transport Users Association, welcomed the extra services, but said the government should have gone much further.

“I think commuters would like to see more substantial changes to the schedules to cut waiting times and relieve overcrowding,” Mr Bowen said. Coalition transport spokesman David Hodgett said the extra services would be welcomed on the lines involved, but would do nothing to relieve serious overcrowding on the Melton line or at new suburban stations in Tarneit and Wyndham Vale, which are along the Regional Rail Link. The Coalition has promised to introduce a timetable of trains every 10 minutes between peak periods on several metropolitan lines, including Werribee, Craigieburn, the Sunbury line as far as Watergardens and the Upfield line as far as Coburg. – The Age

The company has revived the musical comedy Bugsy Malone – the story of a one-time boxer who is thrust into the gangster life when he unwillingly becomes the saviour of a speakeasy boss called Fat Sam. The show is the third the company has performed in the newly refurbished Bluestone Theatre and is being directed by Lyndsay Kirkham and musical director Rauri Barker. Picnic revisited A much-anticipated Australian television series is bringing an iconic novel to life on the small screne. A television series of Joan Lindsay’s famous 1967 novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, is in production at Werribee Mansion. Picnic at Hanging Rock, which was also made into a film in 1975, tells the story of three schoolgirls and one teacher who mysteriously disappear from the rock on Valentine’s Day in 1900. Memorial for unmarked graves By Serena Seyfort

The hundreds of unidentified children and adults resting in Gisborne cemetery will be honoured by a memorial to be unveiled next month. More than 300 graves in the cemetery are unmarked because of insufficient records, according to Gisborne Cemetery Trust president Doug McArthur. “The records going back 150 years aren’t that good, which is fairly common with most old cemeteries,” Mr McArthur said. He said a private donor had dedicated funds to the commemoration of unidentified children’s graves at the cemetery. That had prompted the trust to combine that money with other donations from the community to erect a memorial to all those in unmarked graves. “We always have very strong community support,” Mr McArthur said. At the memorial’s unveiling, the trust will also enhance the existing monument erected for the centenary of World War I in 2015. A poem by local poet Eddie Gardiner has been set in bronze and mounted on granite to complement the existing bronze statue of a soldier. Mr Gardiner will recite the poem at its unveiling.. The unveiling ceremony will take place from 11am on Wednesday, June 14. Refreshements will be provided afterwards.
A Sunbury woman is on a mission to raise money and awareness about the struggle of leprosy sufferers in Nepal. Kerri Borg will embark on a three-kilometre swim at her local pool on behalf the Leprosy Mission’s Sunbury action group. Leprosy Mission leads projects around the world to help fight the disease and support its victims. Ms Borg says it’s the second time she’s taken on the challenge and hopes to raise as much as possible for the cause. “For over 30 years our Sunbury group
has been helping the Leprosy Mission support sufferers in Nepal,” she said. “It’s a horrendous condition that doesn’t get enough publicity. “It’s a humiliating condition and people who have it are often shunned around the world … there is a cure, but there’s no immunisation for it. “This year, I will be swimming laps of the Sunbury Aquatic Centre pool to raise money for the modification of houses in Nepal to cater for the needs of families affected by disability as a result of leprosy.” Ms Borg is also swimming to support people in East Timor, affected by leprosy, in job training
and placement. She is training for the Thursday, June, 1 event and is looking for sponsorship and donations to help with her cause. By Esther Lauaki Two mates set out on an epic 15-day charity ride from South Australia to Beechworth, via the Macedon Ranges, on a mission to share the stories of veterans with post traumatic stress disorder. The Coo-Wee Ride team, including rider Matt Aldridge and his support crew lead by Leigh Eeles, embarked on the 1800-kilometre bike trek on May 6 from Barmera in South Australia’s Riverland and arrived at their final destination on Saturday. Mr Aldridge launched the charity ride to support veterans mental health issues and their families.

Kyneton South residents are being invited to have their say on the future of their end of town. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council’s Kyneton South draft plan would provide important insights into the constraints and opportunities of planning in the suburb. “The consultation will ensure that any future planning for potential growth … reflects the town’s valued character, is responsive to wider township needs and adequately considers transport connections, recreational spaces and conservation areas,” she said. The Kyneton South draft plan, now out for public comment, provides a framework to guide planning for transport connections, open spaces and community infrastructure. “The draft plan aims to safeguard the integrity of Kyneton’s character – from its streets and spaces, to the quality of the surrounding landscapes,” Cr Anderson said. “I’d encourage residents to get involved in the process and have their say.” Council will also roll out an online and door-to-door survey to ask the community questions about aspects of living in Kyneton and questions regarding servicing needs now and into the future. Along the way, the team recorded veterans who offered to share their stories. They plan to use those stories to create a documentary about the veterans’ experiences after deployment. “I am not in the military but this is a cause I am passionate about,” Mr Aldridge said. “We have identified PTSD and suicide as areas needing assistance and we will be using funds raised [during the ride] to support returned services personnel where we can on these issues.” Last Wednesday, day 11 of the ride, the team rolled through Macedon to Woodend, Hanging Rock, Newham and Lancefield. MY PLACE Molly Hemburrow has footy fever. The 16-yearold Sunbury resident, who works with the Western Bulldogs, is keen on a football career. She speaks with Serena Seyfort. What is your connection to Sunbury? I was born in Sunbury Private Hospital and I’ve lived in Sunbury all of my life. I’ve always loved Sunbury, especially the small community and how it means that you know most people. When you’re walking down the street, you’re guaranteed to see someone you know. What do you love most about the area? The thing I like most about the area is the sporting culture and facilities. I love the fact that I get to play against and alongside my friends and then see them again at school. What would you change about the area?
I have always had a passion for sport. No matter what sport I’m playing or watching, I love it. I started playing basketball for Sunbury Braves when I was in prep and then footy in year 7, playing for Sunbury Lions girls. After moving to SEDA College (sports educational development school), I now have new opportunities to work within the football industry and with the Western Bulldogs Football Club, running clinics for primary-school kids, promoting the game and the club and teaching basic footy skills. It’s great! I love it because it gives me an insight into a possible future career, either as an AFLW player or somewhere in the football community. (Joe Mastroianni)

Making memories that count Whether you’re nana or pop, nonna or nonno, yaya or pappous, ba or ong, when you have long-distance grandchildren, you want to keep the relationship close and strong despite infrequent personal contact. Author Sharon Lovejoy tells in her book, Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars, how the simplest conversations, letters and traditions can keep the intimate bond with grandchildren flourishing across the miles. Here are just three of her suggestions that are creative and fun memory-makers, and fab ways to pile on the mortar of love to the brick wall of distance: 1 Celebrate an un-birthday Long-distance grandparents can’t always make it to their grandchild’s birthday, but the missing out – on both sides – can be solved by creating a new tradition: choose a day in the year you know suits you both to get together and declare it Unbirthday Day. Two birthdays a year is exciting for any child. Make it all about him/her, with birthday banners, a fancy cake or trip to the zoo (or whatever their interest). And, of course, a gift. 2. Letters and pictures Post them a large envelope, addressed to your grandchild’s name, and enclose a bundle of smaller unsealed envelopes with an A4 sheet of paper inside each, stamped and addressed to you. Ask their parents to encourage them to write or draw something every few weeks, then let them post them. A steady stream of letters and pictures not only keep you in their hearts and minds, but end up being a keepsake chronicle of their lives for you to share and laugh over as they reach adulthood. 3. Commemorate their visit After a visit with them at your place, use your talents to make a keepsake and reminder of what fun they had. Make a collage of photos, tickets from a show, a sketch depicting a discovery or funny moment you shared, a message of good luck for an upcoming challenge – anything, really. Glue them to brightly coloured A4 poster paper, then get it laminated and post it to them. And, hey, don’t worry about these ideas being considered old-fashioned. In an increasingly digitalised age, the importance of the personal, the thoughtful and the touchable can be kept alive across the generations. And grandkids will love it. Carole Levy

SPORT Bulldogs dogged start to women’s league first season Gisborne continues to show signs of improvement in the inaugural AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. The Bulldogs were a little unsure of how they would go this season, for them it was first about providing a pathway for the youth side’s from their junior club Gisborne Rookies. Next was to continue to improve each week and hope that wins would follow. On Sunday, the Bulldogs had their best match of the season, but still lost to Drysdale Hawks 11.9 (75)-6.1 (37). Ashlee Knight and Francesca Stevens kicked two goals each for the Bulldogs, with Marnie Love and Knight named the best. It was the Bulldogs’ first match of the actual season after a bye last week and two weeks of grading. Gisborne played two grading matches against
teams which have ended up in division 1 and coach Anthony Carrigg said it was hard to now judge where they sit. “We got beaten, but we were really pleased with how we’re going,” he said. “Only four or five players had played before and the signs are looking good. “We spoke about it after the first game, that we didn’t know what to expect so they had to play their best straight up.” Carrigg said it has been exciting to get the team up and running and the players were keen to learn. They have 23 registered players and they’re looking for more. Having enough players to field a full side was something Carrigg didn’t think would happen during the pre-season. “The total numbers are good, but we have a

lot of players who work on weekends. Having 23 girls is a lot better than four or five weeks ago [when] we had 12 or 13 girls and it was touch and go if we would get a side up.
“The last three to four weeks has been really good, a few girls have come down to training and enjoyed it and stayed around. If we could get a few wins everyone would be happy.” He said Nat Dowdy, Bianca Zeinstra, Marni Love and Neve Carrigg were ones to watch this season. In division 1, Sunbury Kangaroos had a 9.14 (68)-0.2 (2) win against Melton Centrals. Coach Danni Green was best on ground for a second straight week. In the Riddell youth girls competition, it was the battle of the Gisborne sides. Gisborne Blue came out on top against Gisborne White, 10.17 (77)-0.2 (2). Sharks seek extra bite By Tara Murray Rupertswood has racked up another win, but the Sharks know they still have a lot of work to do in the Riddell District Football League. With one loss after five rounds the Sharks are the highest-scoring team in the league, but coach Kevin Fitzgerald said they have to work harder. “The amount of work we are doing needs to increase,” Fitzgerald said. “We think we can play a lot better football than what we’ve been playing. “There’s a long way to go. It’s no good getting carried away with our results. “As I said to the boys, it’s no good being the March champions and winning games by a mile. When we come to the business end of the season, we have to be playing good footy.” The Sharks defeated a determined Riddell side 15.12 (102)-9.11 (65) on Saturday. All day the Sharks looked the likely winners, but the Bombers wouldn’t go away. Fitzgerald was frustrated after the game. “They were pretty good and I thought we were pretty scratchy,” he said. “They were pretty competitive, tackled really well and they kept the pressure on us. It was a tough game in the end. “We thought it should have blown out. They kicked four cheap ones in the last quarter. Credit to them that they kept running in the end and we didn’t.” Sean Hetherington and Jayden Muscat kicked three goals apiece for the Sharks. James Nolan kicked four goals for the Bombers, but was reported and sent from the ground in the third quarter. The Sharks face a testing two weeks with matches against the much-improved Romsey and the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Sharks will be without big man Joel West, who is out injured with a calf injury. Fitzgerald said not having West, who has only played two games this season, was a big loss. “We haven’t been able to get [all the recruits] on the park at the same time,” he said. “Westy wasn’t able to play today and that changed the way we set up. If you take him out, you’ve got to find someone who can pinch hit in the ruck.” Nicholas Agnello is also in doubt with an ankle injury. He was on crutches after the game. In other matches, the results went as expected: Romsey kicked away in the second half against Lancefield, Macedon smashed Broadford, Diggers Rest rebounded with a 120-point win against Rockbank, Sunbury Kangaroos were too good for Melton Centrals and Wallan defeated Woodend-Hesket. Ford revs up for another tilt Jordan Ford shocked the superkart world last year when he claimed the British Superkart Grand Prix 250cc national-class championship as an unknown. Now the Sunbury resident is planning to defend his title. Ford, who has won the past two Australian 250cc national-class superkart titles, will travel to England in the coming weeks with the hope of repeating last year’s win. He’ll compete in a round of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship the day before the grand prix. Ford enters this year’s grand prix race with big expectations. “There’s a lot of pressure,” he said. “Last time it was let’s go over and see how we go. They know who I am now and I’ve got an expectation to go and win. I’ve put huge expectations on myself.” As well as defending his title, he’s hoping to have better results in the European Superkart Championship round also held at the Donington track. Last year he won one race of the round before engine problems restricted him to fourth in the second race. “I have the same kart and the same team over in the UK as I did last year. It’s great equipment and it’s up to the driver. “You live and learn and I know how to win there.” Not content with competing in just one round, this year he will compete in all three rounds of the European Superkart Championship. The second round is at Assen, in the Netherlands, in August. The third and final round will be in Le Mans in France in October. Ford said competing in the championships was the pinnacle of superkarts. “Le Mans is one of the biggest tracks in the world. It’s huge to be racing on that track.” Tara Murray

Victory is proof positive of Rupertswood’s progress Rupertswood continues to build momentum in the Riddell District Netball League, a solid four-quarter performance against Riddell on Saturday being the latest step. The match between two of the most dominant teams of the past few years provided a glimpse of the competition’s future with both sides full of young talent. The Sharks got the jump early in the first quarter and were never headed, going on to win 54-35. A little bit more experience proved to the key for the Sharks. Amy Starzer was the best goaler on court for the Sharks, while Chloe Meulenmeesters was the best of the Bomber goalers. Sharks coach Di McCormack said the side was settling into the season nicely. “I’m really happy,” she said. “Having Beck [Anstey] and Prue [Stanley] on the court is telling as their leadership is showing through. “Jess Dominko was the Jess of old and I can’t be more happy with how she’s playing.
“Amy was outstanding in controlling the circle. “That’s probably our most comprehensive win against Riddell in A grade we’ve ever had.” McCormack was also full of praise for the younger players. Holly Keating, who played the whole game at wing defence, and Hayley Matthews, who played in goals, both had good games. McCormack said the Sharks were working to settle their line-up, with a third goaler an area they were still looking to fill. Bec Said got her chance on Saturday, playing her first game in A grade. “She was really nervous,” McCormack said. “She’s matured in the last six months. She’s just turned 18 and her speed and fitness and confidence in her own ability have grown.” The Sharks, who are sixth on the ladder after five rounds, will face undefeated Romsey this week. “It’s going to be a hard season and we know that,” McCormack said.
“We’ve got to capitalise on games when we can and we’ve got to get the points and the percentage and work on our transition in those games. “Then we need to take that across to the games against the top sides. “We’ll be tested against Romsey. I think we’re up to the task. We may not win, but we’ll give them a lot of pressure and take it to them.” In other results, Romsey defeated Lancefield in a battle between two undefeated sides. The thrilling contest went down to the final whistle, with the Redbacks sneaking home 52-51. The other matches were one-sided, with Diggers Rest, Macedon and Melton Centrals all having big wins. Irish eyes are smiling By Tara Murray Orla O’Reilly’s best friend bugged her for years to come out to Australia and play basketball. Fellow Irish basketballer Jessica Scannell, herself playing in the Big V competition, thought that O’Reilly would love the competition and the country. “She’d [Scannell] been going on about it non-stop. I was home during the off season and she cornered me about playing [in Australia],” O’Reilly said last week. When Sunbury coach Kennedy Kereama offered O’Reilly a spot in the Sunbury Jets’ Big V women’s state championship side it was an offer she couldn’t refuse. The Jets won last year’s division 1 championship and have continued on their winning way – 10 games into this season they are undefeated. O’Reilly has fitted in well, averaging 14.6 points and six rebounds per game. She’s connected with her teammates on and off the court, but a couple things in the competition have surprised her. “The competition has quite skilled players, the physicality has surprised me. “In Spain, the gym isn’t a big thing, but I’ve been in the gym all the time here.” One element O’Reilly has really enjoyed has been the opportunity to coach younger players. She said training commitments in other countries meant she couldn’t do as much coaching as she would have liked. “I coached a lot in Ireland over the summer, running camps on a guest coach basis. I did a little bit in Spain, but I’m doing a lot more out here. “These girls and boys that we coach are the ones that come and watch us play. We’re giving back to them.” Playing basketball came natural growing up, her two older brothers Niall and Colin both played and went on to represent their country. O’Reilly and her twin sister Sinead followed the same path through junior basketball and to university. “I started playing when I was 10. We were both part of the All-Irish team and got scholarships to Binghamton University in New York. “We both made our senior debut for Ireland as 17-year-olds. “It’s quite popular to go to college in the states as it’s quite close, I enjoyed New York.” While O’Reilly knew she wanted to continue playing basketball, Sinead decided to give away the sport and focus on her career. O’Reilly said that was common in Ireland. “You usually go to the states and come home and play in the amateurs or start having a career. Once you hit 22 you sort of start losing players,” she said. “Jess and I are the only [Irish women] players

playing professional at the moment.” O’Reilly spent a year in Czech Republic before playing in Spain for the past three years. A broken hand brought to an end her time in Spain last January, then a broken wrist while representing Ireland in a 3 x 3 Euros tournament ruled her out of FIBA European Championships for Small Countries in June. O’Reilly was meant to captain the Irish team at the championships.
“We were quite strong six to seven years ago, but the Irish Association was in debt so we couldn’t play. “I was one of the youngest, now I’m the more experienced and captain.” O’Reilly said she hadn’t thought much about her plans once the Big V season ends. She hasn’t ruled out returning to Australia next year. “A championship with the Jets is all I’m thinking of,” she said
Jets shake off early wobbles The encouraging signs continue for the Sunbury Jets men’s side in Big V division 1 basketball. After struggling early in the season, the Jets are producing some good form. On Saturday night they recorded their third win with a 93-84 victory against Western Port Steelers. The Jets set up the win in the first half, outscoring the Steelers by 20 points. Javari Williams had a massive impact, with match tallies of 29 points and 12 rebounds. The Jets fell short of making it two wins in as many days, losing a 73-69 thriller to Melbourne Black Angels on Sunday. Jacob Formosa top-scored for the Jets with 19 points. Jets coach Lanard Copeland says he would’ve taken the weekend’s results before the two games. “Most coaches will take a split weekend,” he said. “As a coach you want to win every game, but I will take that result. “I was happy with how we played and gave ourselves a chance. “We were in front with two minutes to go, but unfortunately didn’t win the second game.” Copeland said the short break between the two games took a toll. Williams, who was battling the flu, couldn’t repeat his heroics of the night before, with the illness leaving him with no energy come the end of the second game. But Copeland is heartened by the team’s progress. He said it was showing on the scoreboard, with different players stepping up. “Obviously it was always going to take time,” he said. “We’re a brand new team. The guys’ confidence in each other is growing and we’re getting closer as a unit.” The Jets have two matches before the all-star weekend. Copeland said they would continue to work hard on the practice court on building connections. The Jets’ women’s side had a bye. Their youth league men’s side had a mixed weekend, a big win on Saturday night against Bendigo Braves followed by a loss in a thriller to Keilor Thunder. Fast-start Lions win well By Tara Murray Six goals from Ben Said propelled Sunbury Lions to their second win of the Ballarat Football League season on Saturday. It was the Said show early against East Point as the forward kicked four first-quarter goals to help the Lions open up a 26-point lead at the first change. Once in front, the Lions stayed there. The margin remained about 20 to 30 points all game, with the Kangaroos unable to reduce the gap and the Lions holding strong. The final score was 14.9 (93)-9.12 (66). Said, who sits third on the league’s goalkicking list, finished with six goals for the Lions, with Ben Guthrie kicking three and Jesse Flannery two. James Rizk, in his second game for the season, was named best on ground. The win was vital for the Lions, who have had mixed results in their opening four games. The Lions are sixth on the ladder, but have played more games than all but one of the teams above them. They will face an unbeaten Lake Wendouree side on Saturday. In netball, the Lions remain undefeated in A grade following a 49-34 win against East Point. The Lions, without gun shooter Chloe Curran, led at quarter-time by four goals and extended that margin at every change. Amanda Cuscak, who stepped up from B grade, shot 42 goals for the Lions. Ashleigh Hardy was named best on court.
