Call for betting ads ban Kyneton residents are taking a stand against gambling advertising in public places. After successfully fighting for the removal of a betting sign on Campaspe Place, residents are calling on the council to ban gambling advertising on public land. More than 300 people have signed a written petition calling for a blanket ban. Another 104 had backed an online petition for the removal of the Campaspe Place sign. “We are concerned about the growing prevalence of gambling advertising everywhere you go,” resident spokeswoman Mary Reid said. “Many children watching sport see so much gambling advertising that they think it’s part of the game.” While the council does not have a policy on gambling advertising, mayor Jennifer Anderson said it was prepared to look at resident’s concerns. The latest push to ban gambling advertising follows what Ms Reid describes as a “big victory for the public”. She says the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club withdrew a five by two-metre betting advertisement from the riverwalk to Kyneton racecourse following community objection. She said a group of residents raised concerns about the ad with the racing club on March 14. The club suggested changes to the ad’s design but a compromise couldn’t be reached. Ms Reid said residents had planned to present a petition to Macedon

Ranges councillors at a protest in front of the sign on May 6, but two days before the event the advertisement was replaced with a ‘Welcome to the Kyneton Racecourse’ sign. Ms Reid said the residents used the May 6 event to thank the racing club and presented the petition to Cr Anderson and other councillors. “The petition wasn’t actually to the racing club, it was to the Macedon Ranges council,” she said.

Cr Anderson said she plans to present the petition at the next council meeting on May 24. “Councillors are considering the petition and looking at ways we can respond to our communities not wanting gambling advertising in public places, out of concern for the health and wellbeing of all residents,” she said. Both the residents group and the council thanked the racing club for taking residents’ concerns on board and removing the ad. A Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, saying that the club wanted to put the issue behind it and move on.

Autumn leaves a joyous feeling Autumn is really turning it on in the Macedon Ranges, as crisp days are ablaze with an explosion of colours. Residents and tourists alike have been falling for nature’s spectacular show this year. The Ranges are known as a hotspot for autumn magic, often sought out by bridal parties and photographers, and as always, Macedon’s oak-lined Honour Avenue is attracting attention. Three-year-old Charlotte (pictured) was very happy to frolic in the autumn leaves at one of her favourite picnic spots. Her mum, Ashley, runs the Macedon Ranges Babes and Picnics group. Petrol thieves on Sunbury streets By Esther Lauaki Thieves are siphoning petrol from parked cars while their owners sleep. Police say petrol thieves have struck across several areas of Sunbury since April 24. They are targeting cars parked on the side of the road and in driveways overnight. Hume crime prevention officer Damien Collins said police were casting a wide net in their investigations. “We haven’t isolated [investigations] of the

thefts to a specific area. With these types of cases, sometimes it wasn’t found out until later that petrol had been siphoned from the cars. [It’s only] when they had been driven a bit and the drivers realised that there was no petrol,” he said. “I would recommend that if people can’t park in a garage, then they should park their vehicles in well-lit areas or secure their vehicles.” Senior-Constable Collins said that while siphoning was not common in the area, public assistance was needed in nabbing the

Facebook page. One poster commented: “A mate of mine had his fuel stolen in Balmoral Court in Sunbury, they left fuel all around the car.” Another resident said petrol was being siphoned in Goonawarra. Senior-Constable Collins appealed for the public to report any suspicious activity or vehicles. New timetable right on track Commuters will have an additional 18 services on the Bendigo line to choose from later this year as part of a new V/Line timetable. Transport minister Jacinta Allan last week announced nine new weekday and nine weekend services to hit the tracks from late August. More V/Line trains will run in the evening on weekdays and a late night train, that presently only runs on Fridays, will run every weeknight. On weekends, trains will run hourly, with five services on Saturdays and four on Sundays. The additions to the timetable come after the Bendigo line recorded its best punctuality and reliability figures in almost six months. Fewer delays were experienced by passengers on the line last month, with 87.9 per cent of services delivered on time, up by 6.1 percentage points compared with March. Bottlenecks at the shared section of track in the metropolitan network were the main cause for delays. Ms Allan said the new services will make “a real difference” in reducing waiting and crowding for local passengers, particularly on weekends. She hopes that the announcement puts further pressure on the federal government to fund regional rail. This month’s state budget earmarked billions for regional trains, line upgrades and services including a $91 million upgrade that will enable more trains to travel to Echuca and stage 2 of Bendigo Metro. New timetables will be available in July at ptv.vic.gov.au

Beware the poison mushroom The most dangerous of the varieties is the death cap mushroom. While it is more commonly found in metropolitan areas, Ms Pouliot did not rule out their existence in the Ranges. She said that although some fungi varieties were harmful to humans, they played a vital role in balancing ecosystems and needed protection. Victorian chief health officer professor Charles Guest warned residents to avoid gathering wild mushrooms in rural Victoria and harvesting from their own gardens because

of the risk of collecting poisonous varieties that might appear very similar to edible varieties. “While commercially sold mushrooms are safe, poisonings can occur when people gathering wild mushrooms inadvertently include toxic species,” Professor Guest said. “Anyone who becomes ill after eating mushrooms should seek urgent medical advice and, if possible, take samples of the whole mushroom for identification.”

Fungi foragers are being warned to avoid poisonous wild mushrooms in the Macedon Ranges. With mushroom season in full swing, the Victorian health department issued the alert last week. Fungi expert Alison Pouliot said one of Victoria’s most dangerous varieties, the yellow staining mushroom, had popped up in Mount Macedon in recent months. “I ran a series of foraging workshops recently and all nine of the mushrooms I collected off nature strips were yellow staining,” she said.

Ranges rockers do battle Wannabe rock gods and pop stars have the chance for glory at Kyneton Town Hall. FReeZA Push Start’s annual Battle of the Bands local event is open to musicians aged 12 to 25 who live, work or study in the Macedon Ranges. Trentham metal band This is a Prison (pictured) took out last year’s event, winning the cash prize and a place in the regional finals. Drummer Dan Evans said the experience was “absolutely brilliant”. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council-run event was a great opportunity for participants to test their music on new audiences. “Battle of the Bands has been uncovering new acts for over 10 years,” Cr Anderson said. To perform in the Macedon Ranges heats on Saturday, August 5, register before July 18 on 5422 0242 or at mits@mrsc.vic.gov.au. Serena Seyfort

General police, highway patrol and officers across Bendigo, Campaspe, Central Goldfields and Macedon Ranges will target drivers using their phone while driving. The first stage of operation Millet is being held throughout May, in response to a rise in fatalities involving drivers using mobile phones and other electronic distractions. On-the-spot fines of $466 and the loss of four demerit points apply to offences.

Hospital feedback call By Esther Lauaki Kyneton residents are being urged to speak up before a major redevelopment is set in stone at the town’s old hospital site. A plan to subdivide the land, develop the hospital building, carry out conservation works to registered historic buildings and construct roads, landscaping and dwellings is out for public comment on heritage issues until May 23. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said it was important that any development suited

the site’s character and the needs of the community. “It’s a really important site for Kyneton and the best outcomes are going to be produced if everybody has a look at the proposal and has their say on it,” Ms Pruneau said. Last year, a group of 300 locals staged an event as part of the SaveOKH campaign with the aim of buying back the old Kyneton hospital from developers to save it from suburban housing. A heritage impact statement, prepared for Winport Developments and included with a permit application to Heritage Victoria, said that the heritage registered portion of the site

would include 11 new single-storey houses. The remainder of the site would include development of a number of single-storey dewellings and one two-storey house. The central bluestone hospital building, built in 1854, would be transformed into four units and the former infectious diseases building would be refurbished as a house. An environment, land, water and planning department spokesman said that once Heritage Victoria had reached a decision on a permit, the next steps in the planning process for the hospital would rest with Macedon Ranges council.

No smokes without fire An undercover sting has caught a Gisborne shop repeatedly selling cigarettes to a minor. The store was one of three in Gisborne found to be selling cigarettes to minors during an annual operation by Macedon Ranges council. Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said it was disappointing to find retailers breaking the law. “Retailers must understand that selling cigarettes to children under 18 is unacceptable,” Ms Lindner said. The sting involved an under-age teenager visiting 23 tobacco retailers within the shire and attempting to buy tobacco. Three shops sold cigarettes to the teenager during the February operation. All three received official warnings. Ms Lindner said one store sold tobacco to an under-age teenager again during a follow-up operation in April, and was fined $621. She said traders are legally required to ask for identification from customers trying to purchase tobacco if they look younger than 25. “It isn’t always easy to tell how old a person is, so traders must ask for identification from any person who may be under 25 to avoid penalties,” she said. Concerns about retailers selling cigarettes to children should be reported on 5421 9670. Serena Seyfort

Have a vine time at Gisborne Peak Winery this,” Barbara says. “To go with our great selection of wines, we serve up wood-fired pizzas (from Mama and Papa Bear ovens) every day.

Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, is making its presence felt at Gisborne Peak Winery, with grapes finishing their ripening in readiness for hand-picking.

Autumn at the Winery - a beautiful time to visit.

“Sizzling prawns are back on the menu by popular demand, and our tasters’ platter is always a winner. Coffee and dessert are also served.”

Barbara Nixon, owner of the winery with husband Bob, says it’s an exciting time.

“It’s always a relief to see our grapes respond to a good season,” Barbara says. “Now it’s up to the winemaker to turn those grapes into wine.

“The taste of love and care is evident in every bottle …”

Wines are served by the glass or bottle and visitors can take advantage of free tutored tasting at the cellar door to sample selected wines.

“We’ve been working with the same winemaker and his family since 1991 to make our wine. We haven’t been disappointed yet. We love visitors to come and taste the Macedon Ranges sunshine in a glass of Gisborne Peak wine.

The winery has a wonderfully distinctive setting, with a deck overlooking the water for when the sun’s shining and the Fireside Room is the perfect antidote to the colder seasons. Four eco-cottages are in the winery’s grounds, each accommodating two adults.

“The taste of love and care is evident in every bottle – something that only really happens in a boutique, family-owned winery.

“These are where luxury, relaxation, sustainability and fine wine all come together,” Barbara says. “Once people experience the total package, they will return again and again. That’s a promise!”

“There’s no mass production here, no automatic picking machine – everything is done by us with enormous care.” Gisborne Peak Winery has built a strong reputation for its quality, locally grown and made wines, as well as a friendly approach to service.

Stylishly revamped, this California bungalow – named Rosslyn – retains rich heritage detail such as ornate ceiling plasterwork, plate rails, fireplace and sash windows, while beautiful polished floorboards add warmth. Two fitted bedrooms along the entry hall share a bright bathroom and next door is a walk-in linen closet. A contemporary family-meals area, with french doors to the great back verandah, incorporates a sleek mod-country kitchen with the full suite of stainless-steel appliances. The block of about 3310 square metres has wonderful native gardens to explore, while potential for further development exists, STCA. Within four-minute car trips of village centre and station, the property also has a secure garage and charm to spare.

Loaded with appeal, this house on a secluded block of about 2325 square metres is tailor-made for a downsizer who values a pretty garden; smaller families and investors will pay attention, too. It has two grey-carpeted fitted bedrooms that share a good-sized, two-way bathroom where rich-cream and white trims form the palette as seen throughout. Floorboards line the family area and kitchen-diner, the latter opening to an elevated deck. The kitchen has charcoal cabinetry (and matching charcoal window frames), white benches and stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher. A large rumpus room accesses a back verandah and front garden. Back gardens show off formal hedging, lawn and trees with autumn colour. Macedon station and Calder Freeway are minutes away.

All sleek and modern, this house is packed with appeal for a young family. It has the popular palette of greys and white, streamlined roller blinds and fab designer lightfittings. There’s an expansive tiled living domain with a kitchen which has white cabinetry, charcoal splashback tiles, an island bench and all mod-cons; a feature red wall frames the kitchen well. Four fitted bedrooms range from front to back down the left hand side, with the separate toilet and laundry on the same side. The main bedroom has walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The property has an integrated alfresco zone and partially landscaped block of about 550 square metres.

Constructed of handmade bricks by Stonehenge custom builders, this wonderful house is encircled by enchanting gardens and olive groves that form part of the 2.7-hectare property known as Matapuna. The many nooks, alfresco dining areas, garden ‘rooms’, paths and beautiful trees give Matapuna exceptional ambience. The immaculately maintained house has rich period detail. The main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, is across the entry hall from a living room with fireplace. The country-style kitchen (with noteworthy cooker) centres family and dining rooms, the latter with french doors to gardens. As well as a charming loft bedroom, there are two others opposite a bathroom, laundry and separate toilet. Other assets include a quaint double carport, double-storey loft/barn, stone shed, orchard, chicken coop, abundant tank water and potable bore.

Stanton, a truly wonderful property of about 17 hectares, has so much going for it as either hobby farm or lifestyle sanctuary it’s hard not to get excited. Infrastructure to support farming is exceptional: five well-fenced paddocks with auto-filled troughs and laneway system, three dams (one spring-fed), a stockyard, historical shearing shed with three stables, a huge machinery shed/workshop, a silo and windmill, numerous other sheds and about 132,500 litres of tank water. Stanton is a minute away from Calder Freeway entry but by the time the nearly one-kilometre driveway ends at the house

precinct, you could be in another world – where cypresses and eucalypts stand guard, a lit mod-grass court invites a tennis match, and sweeps of lawn and garden beds put out a fine welcome mat. The gorgeous c1910 house has big rooms that celebrate heritage richness, with later renovations executed with sensitivity. Two of the revamps are standouts: the kitchen, and a fab room formed by enclosing the original side verandah, which is accessed via french doors from a formal dining room with chandeliers and fireplace. Laid with jarrah floorboards, the ‘verandah’ long-room has a cedar-lined

angled ceiling, beautiful windows, a custom-made timber wet bar, a wood heater and french doors to a grape vine-clad pergola. It links with the lovely two-year-old mod-country kitchen, which has European oak floors, a huge Caesarstone island bench, Siemens dishwasher, Electrolux dual ovens, 900mm induction cooktop and a butler’s pantry adjoining the laundry. The home’s entry point beyond a deep verandah is a lounge room with unique cornicing on 3.3-metre ceilings, original wall rendering and ripple-glass transoms, and a fireplace flanked by shelves.

Four charming bedrooms include the huge main with chandelier and original fireplace, a spa en suite and a dressing room with a door to the front verandah. A heritage powder room couples with the main bathroom which has an Edwardian vanity and a customised blackwood tallboy. An original three-bedroom, self-contained cottage in the grounds has everything needed for guests or extended family. Among many perks are hydronic heating (throughout main house), and a gabled pergola housing modern barbecue and sink. Carole Levy 11 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 16, 2017

“The market is exceptionally strong at the moment, with increased Melbourne buyers looking to relocate to our beautiful part of the world. Lifestyle properties, and those with character, are experiencing off-the-scale interest and achieving excellent prices. People are seeking properties outside the standard ‘cookie-cutter’ scenario. The Macedon Ranges region continues to offer immense appeal to families, through a combination of country-style living, leafy streets and lush parklands - not to mention fabulous eateries, excellent schools and other amenities, as well as the easy city commute. According to latest REIV figures, Gisborne South median price increased by 27.1 per cent, New Gisborne went up 14.8 per cent, Gisborne prices rose by 9 per cent and Romsey by 11.1 It’s a great time for local residents to contact us for a market appraisal.” Jason Kennedy, director Kenedy & Hunt Market Advice: “Romsey is such a beautiful country town and just 35 minutes from the airport! What first strike visitors to Romsey are the trees - beautiful old trees that are now turning a deep autumn red. Making a tree change is easy when moving to Romsey. The trend is still for larger blocks – 900 to 1600 square metres, affordable prices, excellent schools and services and a friendly community. SPORT Sunbury BMX rides into national titles Two Sunbury BMX riders claimed national titles at the 2017 BMX Australia National Championships last month. The club had 34 riders head to Queensland to compete in the tough competition, with some classes having more than 60 riders competing. Six Sunbury riders made finals and claimed a converted “A” plate for finishing in the top eight of the Australian titles. Rob Slatter had a day out with a win in the 35-39 cruiser event and finished third in the men’s race for the same age group. Harvey Dale took out the 39 and under retro event. Ben Simmonds finished eighth in the 30-34 men’s cruiser competition, Lily Corbett finished seventh in the 8-13 girls retro class, Jagger Govic finished fourth in the under-39 retro class and Josh McDermott finished sixth in the 14 boys. Sunbury BMX’s Corey Sztama said the club, which is one of the biggest in the state, was thrilled with the results. “Three riders with massive classes who also

almost made the finals were Tyla Hall in the eight boys, Sam Todd in the 10 boys and Harvey Dale in the 16 boys,” he said. “These are some of the largest fielding classes so to only just miss the final is a feat in itself. “Lots of aerial antics ensued, with many hitting some massive jumps and railing huge berms, many of which make even the most experienced riders really step up their game. “One of our own elite riders James Lautier, who took the win at the Sunbury Stars Cup last year, unfortunately didn’t quite make it out of the heats the competition level was so high. “Overall it was an amazing field of competitors with one of the elite men throwing down a backflip mid race run in the biggest jump section of the track.” Slatter, who coaches at the Sunbury club, will now compete at the World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, US in July. Sztama said the club hopes he will be able to achieve a “W” plate for finishing top-eight in the world. Tara Murray

TAC Cup

Calder Cannons have opened their account in the TAC Cup with a win against Gippsland Power on Saturday. The Cannons started the better of the two teams and opened an early lead. They were able to extend the lead at every break to win, 18.9 (117)-12.13 (85). Mitchell Podhajski kicked six goals in a best-on-ground performance in a rare turn in the forward line. RDNL’s wise heads win By Tara Murray An experienced and patient Riddell District Netball League side has come out on top against West Gippsland. But while the scoreboard showed an easy 48-37 win for the home side, it was anything but in Saturday’s AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships match. The RDNL’s less-than-ideal lead-up to the match involved a single training session. Diggers Rest duo Toni Lind and Natasha Chokljat pulled out during the week due to injuries. With the need for an extra mid-courter, Romsey’s Cayley Armstrong became a late inclusion. Three players were on minute restrictions due to their Victorian Netball League commitments, meaning they could only play half games. RDNL playing coach Ciara Stewart said experience played a major role in adjusting to the late changes and securing the win. Stewart, wing attack, said she and goaler Amy Carroll found the attention of the West Gippsland defence frustrating. “West Gippsland had a really strong defence,” she said. “They had a brand new line-up, too, and met for the first time on the morning of the game. “But we were a more experienced team and it came in handy as we knew how to work through things.” The RDNL started the better of the two teams and led 15-7 at quarter-time, but Stewart wasn’t happy. “It was a good scoreline, but we didn’t play great,” she said. “With only one training session, the attacking line-up took a while to get together. Prue [Stanley] started in centre and she hadn’t been able to get to training. “We could have scored 25 goals in the first quarter.” Stewart stayed with the same line-up in the second quarter and the lead was extended. She made several changes at the main break. Once that line-up settled, the lead continued to grow. With five minutes remaining, Stewart shuffled the line-up again. “No one was benched and there was no poor performers – we just wanted everyone to get court time,” Stewart said. “That line-up wasn’t effective and that was the reason we lost the last quarter, but it didn’t matter as we had the game sewn up.” 24 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 16, 2017

Sunbury Kangaroos remain unbeaten in AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. After two wins in the qualifying rounds, the newly formed Kangaroos were placed in division 1. Their good form continued in their round one game, defeating Ballarat Swans, 12.6 (78)-2.2 (14). Carly Blythe and Tara Crisp kicked two goals each. Playing coach Danielle Green was best on ground in a real team performance. Meanwhile in division 2, Gisborne had a bye.

Soccer

Gisborne had a 2-2 draw against Moonee Valley Knights in Football Federation Victoria state league 5 west on Saturday. Gisborne opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Bailey McMurtrie. The Knights’ scored two goals before half-time, Sean Malloy scored the equaliser in the 75th minute. Sunbury United is due to play Fawkner on Monday night after deadline.

Golf

Dean Jones extended his lead in the Romsey Golf Club’s club championship. Leading the A-grade championships after round one, Jones was in a three-way battle for most of the day during the second round but managed to find the right shots at the right time to win from Jim Patton and Ron Walker. Patton leads the B-grade championship, with four players within four shots. In the women’s championship, Kath Jekabsons leads from Jenny Hartley, who won round two.

Women’s Football

Sunbury Lions remain undefeated after four rounds in the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League. Facing Caroline Springs, which won its first ever game the previous round, the Lions’ experienced players came to the fore, with the Lions winning 7.11 (53)-4.0 (24). Kelsie Gill kicked two goals for the Lions.

VRL

Sunbury United Tigers had a thrilling two-point win against Doveton Steelers in Victoran Rugby League’s first grade on Saturday. It was a good day for the Tigers, with their second division side winning 58-14 against the Steelers. The Tigers top side sits sixth on the ladder with two wins. Amy Carroll on her way winning the RDNL best-on-court medal. (Shawn Smits)

Diggers Rest coach Amy Carroll was awarded the RDNL’s official best-on-court medal for her performance in goals. Captain Katie Clarke was awarded best-on-court by her teammates and the league for her defensive efforts.

Stewart said it had been good to participate in the match with a team that just wanted to go out there and play netball. In the under-17s, RDNL was beaten 39-29. Sunbury Lions’ Keara Fitzgerald was best on court for the RDNL.

Ballarat League triumphs in the dying minutes Ballarat Football League finished on top against arch rival Bendigo Football League in a thrilling AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships game. Both sides put on a show and the final result wasn’t sealed until the final minutes. Ballarat conceded the lead early in the last quarter, when Bendigo kicked three quick goals. but fought back with four of the last five goals sealing a 16.9 (105)-14.10 (94) victory and bragging rights. Ballarat was in front for much of the game, but coach Shaun O’Loughlin said it was never comfortable. “It was a great game and [a] really exciting game for those watching,” he said.

“We kept a three-goal buffer for much of the match, but couldn’t break it open. “When they hit the front in the last quarter, we had to fight back to get back in front. “We got a couple of late goals to get back in front. We stood up well in some big contests and finished really well. “We happened to be the side in front at the end.” Darley’s Brian Graham was awarded the best on ground medal for Ballarat. Bacchus Marsh’s Scott Sherlock was dangerous, as was Nathan Horbury and Christopher Giampaolo. Nathan Pring kicked four goals for Ballarat, in what O’Loughlin said was an even team performance.

For Bendigo, Matt Thornton kicked four goals and Andrew Collins was named best on ground. The win means Ballarat will move up from ninth to eighth in state rankings. Bendigo slips to 11th. It’s O’Loughlin’s first win as interleague coach, he was in charge last season when the league lost a thriller to the Western Region Football League. “It was a bit disappointing last year,” he said. “We put in a really good effort, but couldn’t get the win. “It’s good for the league to showcase itself on a bigger stage. The BFL is becoming stronger and it’s such an even competition.”

He said the decision to name a final squad early on, instead of a big initial squad, would be something they would consider continuing. “We found last year we spent the first few training sessions looking at which players we were going to cut. “We decided it would be better to have some really good quality training sessions right from the start. The players really appreciated knowing that they were in the team from the start. It might be a good recipe going forward.” It was the only win of the day for Ballarat, Bendigo won the under-18 football, under-17 netball and senior netball. Tara Murray

RDFL teamwork a winner By Tara Murray Riddell District Football League stepped it up after quarter-time to knock off West Gippsland Football League in the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Country Championships on Saturday. After an even first quarter at Macedon, the RDFL moved the ball more cleanly and it showed on the scoreboard. A 15-point half-time lead was extended in the third and fourth quarters, with the RDFL eventually winning 18.15 (123)-11.5 (71). West Gippsland Football League is still in the early stages of its inaugural season so were an unknown quantity going into the match. West Gippsland was ranked 25th in Victoria and the RDFL 26th. RDFL coach Arron Bray said securing information about its opponents had been tricky, so the league’s focus had been on perfecting its own game. Bray said once the RDFL players settled, they were able to take control. “Everyone was hungry to get their hands on the ball,” he said. “We had two or three blokes going after the same ball. They were sitting on the outside and getting the ball out. “We had to back our blokes to win the football and have some guys on the outside. “The smalls were really good below their knees.” Co-captain Jon Kent kicked six goals and Phil Lobb chipped in with five, but it was the work of another forward, Rex Hickman, that won most praise from the coach. “Rex made life easier for the other forwards,” he said. “He ran their centre half-back to places all around the ground he didn’t want to be. “There was good space behind him for the other forwards.” Woodend-Hesket’s Daniel Toman received the RDFL’s best-on-ground medal. Kent and fellow co-captain Brett Chambers were also named among the best. “Dan hunts the ball well and can hit targets,” Bray said. He said the strength of the side was the way the players had gelled leading up to, and during, the match. “We had nine or 10 go through the midfield at certain stages,” he said. “It was a real team effort. “From the first training session we made sure it wasn’t all the players from Wallan together and all the players from Rupertswood together and so on. “It showed, with everyone gelling as a team.” The win means the RDFL will move up the rankings from 26th. In a clean sweep for the RDFL, its under-18s also defeated West Gippsland. Diggers Rest’s Corey Wright was awarded the best-on-ground medal, with Rupertswood’s Dylan Featon kicking five goals.

Courtney Duever produced an equal season-high 35 points on Saturday night against Eltham Wildcats. (Shawn Smits)

Jets continue winning streak Another week and another win for Sunbury Jets in Big V women’s state championship division. The undefeated Jets’ faced a determined Eltham Wildcats line-up looking to get their season back on track after being docked two wins for not having a player properly registered. Not for the first time the Jets’ were out of the blocks quickly and they led by 12 points at quarter-time. Eltham won the second quarter by two points, but the Jets kept the lead growing in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats by three points in each of the last two quarters to win, 81-65. Courtney Duever was the standout scoring 35 points at 55 per cent from the field. She also had 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Josie Stockill and Monique Stevens both scored double figures as well. The Jets have a bye this weekend. Meanwhile, the Jets’ division 1 men’s side lost 91-82 to Warrnambool Seahawks on Saturday night. It was an even first half, with the Jets leading by four points at half-time. The third quarter proved to be the difference and the Seahawks outscored the Jets 30-14 to take a 12-point lead into the final quarter. The Jets’ couldn’t break the Seahawks in the final quarter. Javari Williams top-scored with 17 points. The Jets have a double header this weekend, facing Western Port Steelers on Saturday night and Melbourne University Black Angels on Sunday.
