Sports club’s female fix Mice have been known to frolic in female changerooms at Gardiner Oval in Gisborne – and the town’s football and netball clubs have had enough of it. The clubs – Gisborne, Rookies and Giants – and their supporters are working hard in a bid to offer their female players upgraded facilities. Parent Sharyn Stiedl said that the female changerooms were unusable, forcing female teams to use the male changerooms. “We currently have a mouse-infested tin shed measuring approximately five by three metres,” Ms Stiedl said. “It really is nothing more than a netball equipment storage facility.” She said the new clubrooms would be built by players’ parents at weekends. “Between the parents, we have builders, electricians, plumbers,” she said. The clubs have contributed funds to get the project started, but they will only provide the shell of the proposed building. The clubs are asking for donations of $100 to pay for a metre of concrete. They are inviting the Gisborne public to a session of evening netball and football matches from 5pm on May 26 to raise awareness for the project. To donate, call Sharyn on 0407 463 483. Cash injection for Hume By Esther Lauaki Upgrades to Sunbury Aquatic Centre, implementation of the Sunbury McMahon Recreation Reserve master plan and construction of the Hume Global Learning Centre are the big ticket projects Hume council is funding in its draft budget for 2017-18. The draft budget, which went out for public feedback this week, proposed to spend $79 million on works across the municipality. It includes a rate rise of two per cent in keeping with the state-imposed cap in rate increases.
Mayor Drew Jessop said the budget reflected the “biggest investment ever” in the future of the area. He said significant effort has been undertaken to make a priority of projects that best meet the needs of each community. “Council is motivated by a commitment to make the lives of our community better and in 2017-18,” Cr Jessop said. The draft budget includes a massive $7.5 million injection into the planning and construction of the Hume Global Learning Centre which will house Sunbury library and include community spaces for residents and local organisations, study rooms and
conference rooms. The council is set to splash $1.1 million on the upgrade of Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre, including a heated pool and building improvements, in the next financial year. It also plans to spend $1.6 million putting the Sunbury McMahon Recreation Reserve master plan in motion. Another $5.8 million has been earmarked for roadworks while $2.6 million was proposed for footpath rehabilitation. “In all, this is the largest ever spend on infrastructure in Hume,” Cr Jessop said. “We have also reviewed and reduced our fees in relation to use of community facilities

Macedon equine industry saddles up for a fight The push to get an equine strategy back on the Macedon Ranges council agenda is on again. Councillors voted in February to shelve plans for a state-of-the-art regional equine centre, a central pillar to the shire’s equine strategy which expired last year. Cr Roger Jukes was the sole voice of opposition and made a bid in March to keep plans for the centre on the table. But he was voted down to resounding boos from nearly 100 horse enthusiasts who showed their support with placards, riding helmets and a convoy of horse floats.
However, an online petition, created as part of the Save Macedon Equine campaign, has picked up more than 100 signatures in the past week. The campaign’s organiser, who asked not to be named, said the group feels that the council was not acting in the best interests of the industry. “The equine strategy and centre project has been developed to not only benefit the equine industry, but also the tourism industry, farmers and small businesses, many of whom are struggling to find enough work to support themselves,” the petitioner said.

“Not completing the business case shows a poor understanding of the area and a marked lack of good business sense.” All other councillors agreed that the leisure components of the equine industry should be dealt with under council’s leisure strategy. Cr Jukes said at the time of the decision to
scrap the strategy and plans for the centre, that council was close to the end of a five-year process that involved community and the industry. “To lose the strategy from our planning means that equine is considered as a general planning application and has no significance [within the planning scheme] which I find quite unbelievable for a big industry and generator of more than a $140 million,” he said. Top marks for funding By Serena Seyfort Sunbury and Macedon Ranges schools are planning some major upgrades after funding wins in the 2017-18 state budget. Sunbury Downs Secondary College will receive $3.9 million for much-needed upgrades. Principal Maria Oddo said the funds will be used to modernise facilities, which have not been updated since the school was built in 1988. “This is the first injection of really good capital funding for our community,” Ms Oddo said. “It will go a long way in our ability to provide 21st century learning.”
Sunbury MP Josh Bull has been consulting with the school regarding capital support over the past year. “It was pretty clear to me that the school was in great need of funding,” Mr Bull said. The principal said the main priority is installing heating and cooling, followed by upgrading the gymnasium, science classrooms and technology wing. “For us it’s not about building another building, it’s looking at what our current structures are and upgrading them so that they meet the needs of today,” Ms Oddo said. Ms Oddo said that updating facilities should
attract more families to Sunbury Downs Secondary College. “The building upgrades will make us competitive against, of course, other schools, but also the private sector,” she said. “This is championing government education.” Primary schools in the Macedon Ranges will also receive funds to modernise their facilities. Gisborne Primary School has been allocated the most funding at $1.6 million, followed by $472,000 for Mount Macedon Primary School, $90,000 for Bolinda Primary School and $64,000 for Darraweit Guim Primary School.

Calls to improve phone and internet coverage in Pipers Creek have been answered. Telstra has installed a mobile tower in Pipers Creek as part of the federal government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. Absent and poor telecommunications coverage in the region impedes safety, business productivity, education, social connectedness and access to services, a 2014 study into the Macedon Ranges Telecommunications Black Spots found. “When internet banking requires confirmation details and responds with an SMS, weather determines whether I get the message,” one survey participant said. Other survey responses said their lack of reception made it difficult to work from home. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the tower would upgrade coverage, reducing these challenges for residents. “Residents in Pipers Creek will now see a substantial improvement to mobile coverage and connectivity,” Ms Thomas said. “This program is not only significantly improving mobile coverage for thousands of households and businesses, it’s creating new opportunities that will boost our regional economy.” Pipers Creek is one of 577 mobile coverage black spots across regional and rural Australia receiving expanded 3G/4G mobile coverage from the $486 million Mobile Black Spot Program. A Sunbury sparky has earned himself a flash new title as a Kangan Institute Apprentice of the Year. Electrician Steve McKinnon, above, claimed top honours in his category in the awards at South Wharf earlier this month. The awards recognised more than 30 apprentices and trainees from construction, engineering, electrical, landscape construction, commercial cookery, bakery, hairdressing and automotive backgrounds. Offering help to save lives
Gardens future views wanted
More Macedon Ranges young people will be informed, inspired and possibly saved through a youth suicide prevention initiative. The council developed Live4Life in 2009 as a community-wide response to a reported increase in depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide in the Ranges, particularly among 13 to 14 year olds. It has since fielded requests from other local government areas to duplicate the successful program which adopts a holistic approach to increase knowledge, reduce stigma and improve mental health services appropriate for young people. More than 600 secondary school students gathered in Kyneton last Tuesday to launch this year’s initiative. Macedon Ranges council and Cobaw Community Health Service joined with Victoria Police to promote the program at Gisborne Secondary College, Braemar College, Kyneton Secondary College, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School and Sacred Heart College. Councillor Bill West, who attended last week’s launch, said the project had many benefits for young people in the region. “Seeing so many young people come together around such an important issue is truly inspiring,” Cr West says. “Life4Life is a great example of council and the community working together to support young people in our shire.”
Gisborne residents are being asked to help frame the future of their botanic gardens. Their views are wanted by Macedon Ranges council on its draft plan for Gisborne Botanic Gardens, which has been prepared to guide the gardens’ management and development for the next 15 years. The plan proposes expansion of the gardens’ plant collection and infrastructure and more visits by horticultural enthusiasts, educational groups, tourists and the broader community. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the gardens played an important role. “We want to ensure the master plan highlights the importance of the site and ensures the gardens continue to provide enjoyment for the whole community for many years to come,” Cr Anderson said. “We’ve been working closely with the Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens and the broader community to ensure this plan looks to the future.” Public toilets, a gazebo, barbecues, drinking fountains, seating, bins, signage and artwork are some of the new infrastructure the plan proposes. Good work is in the bag What goes around comes around – that’s what a group of Sunbury crafters hope will happen as they try to find a fix for plastic bag pollution in the town. Volunteers for Boomerang Bags Sunbury are creating fabric alternatives to the plastic carry bag. They hope shoppers who forget to bring their own bag will take to using an environmentally friendly option for free, so long as they wash it and return it on their next visit. Organiser Melyssa Edmonds says a series of sewing bees are being held on the first Saturday of every month and they hope the bags will be available for use in local stores later this year.
“We’re encouraging local business and retailers to consider stocking a pile of the home-made bags near the checkout,” she says. “We’ll be encouraging community members to take one of these bags instead of the plastic bag they would normally get in the shop.” She says more volunteers are needed if the target of 200 bags is to be met by July. “It’s a community environmental initiative and I wanted to get involved because I’m passionate about the environment,” she says. “It’s great to be a part of the community and you meet lots of new people.”

The Woodend couple admit they didn’t think much of each other that night, but friendship, then romance, blossomed and the two eventually married on May 11, 1957. “I didn’t think John was anything special when we first met,” Mrs Wills said. “We found we had common interests and a few things to talk about and then we kept seeing each other.” This week, they will mark their 60th anniversary with family and friends – including members of their wedding party flying in from overseas and interstate. “Time seems to have flown by,” Mr Wills said. “There’s no great secret to a long marriage

Services hot for training Sunbury’s SES and CFA volunteers are training together to determine how the services can complement each other at emergency callouts. More than 20 SES and CFA volunteers faced a simulated two-vehicle accident involving trapped persons and a car fire at Sunbury SES Headquarters and Training Ground on April 30. This exercise was the first of two training sessions that the services will undertake together this year. Sunbury SES training deputy controller Andrew Patience said that this preparation
improves the services’ response to callouts in the community. “We have found that when [the SES and CFA] train together in situations like this it makes the real calls work that much better,” Mr Patience said. “We have done similar training with our friends at Clarkefield CFA and Diggers Rest CFA. Each time has resulted in better responses and better outcomes for those people we are helping.”

Preparing students for a future in an interconnected and changing world, Kilmore International School has classes from years 3 to 12, with boarding available from year 7. Principal Andrew Taylor says his team of inspiring teachers share a commitment to engage each student and provide a year’s growth in learning for each year of teaching. A new purpose-built primary school opened this year for students in years 3 to 6. Mr Taylor says each student is required to sit an entrance assessment. “Classes are now wait-listed, except in year 4. As an international school, all students are required to study Mandarin from year 3, but may study other languages in later years,” he says. “A love of learning, accompanied by effective study habits and routines, is instilled in children early on. It’s very important that they complete work in class and at home. “We have high expectations of our students and antisocial behaviour is not tolerated.” Remarkable results are achieved by the school, with more than half of last year’s graduates gaining an ATAR of 90 or above. Every 2016 graduate was offered a university course and eight university scholarships were accepted. In years 11 and 12, students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which emphasises inquiry-based and independent learning – exactly the skills needed to succeed at university, Mr Taylor says. “Apart from studying mathematics and subjects from the social sciences, experimental sciences and the arts, students must also study two languages and complete a core program that promotes inter-cultural understanding and civic engagement,” he says. After-school supervised study is available in primary and middle schools, with subject tutorials offered from year 10. “Of course, teachers do more than achieve

“RAPID CHANGES” Last week I stood on the verandah of a beautiful home in Romsey Heights as photos were being taken. I looked across the roof tops to the hills east of the township and it struck me how quickly things have changed. It really was not so long ago that cows were grazing where I was standing. It is only a few years ago when Romsey Fields were paddocks and now - homes and established gardens! Life does change very rapidly. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is not one to horse around about burgers… Based on its proximity to Flemington racecourse and location on Racecourse Road, this flashy new burger joint – right opposite the Doutta Galla pub – has enthusiastically embraced a theme based around horse racing. From the name and onwards, it’s all very horsey. There’s garish, internal neon signs proclaiming “feeling lucky?” and “burgers so good you’d put your house on”. The burgers themselves sport the names of famous steeds of the past. And the staff are all wearing T-shirts telling you they’re stewards – just in case you miss the drift. It all seems a bit, well, lame to me – but then, I’m in no way a fan of horse racing. The lack of subtlety doesn’t stop with the repeated racing motifs – the place is bright and loud, the music overbearingly so. But I’m probably not in the focus demographic for such a place. It’s been open just a little while and has been busy the whole time, Uber bags by the dozen heading out the door from day one. They’ve even had to hang up the “sold out” sign on occasion. We do the burgers and sides routine with happy results. The Phar Lap ($11) is one step up from the basic cheeseburger (the Saintly, $8). Phar Lap tastes fine with its 120g patty, cheese, Straight Six sauce, pickles, onion, lettuce and tomato.

If you’re wanting something with more heft, go for the Think Big ($14). The double 100g patties, double cheese, excellent bacon, spicy Straight Six sauce, jalapenos and onion combine to create a beaut burger. A small serve of beer-battered onion rings is generous for the $4 asking price. They’re well cooked, but oh-so-verydecadently rich … more like beer-battered batter than onion rings. They’re good, though, if that’s your thing. The chips – a small serve for $4 – are also a fine deal. Perhaps it’s all about – or much about – timing and location. And perhaps pizzazz, too. A year or so ago, a burger enterprise arose further along Racecourse Road, folding quietly after a few months having made no impression whatsoever. SPORT Jets blast Knox to keep winning streak Sunbury Jets’ unbeaten streak continues after they came out on top in the top-of-the-table clash in Big V state championship women’s division. Facing Knox Raiders, who had only lost one game before Saturday night’s match, the Jets’ knew they had to be on their game. The Jets started well restricting the Raiders to just nine points in the first quarter. The Raiders hit back in the second quarter to reduce the margin to five points at the main break. The Jets saved their best for the third quarter, holding the Raiders to just six points and opening a game-winning lead of 16 points. The Jets lost the last quarter by a point, but they had done enough, winning 63-48. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said it was a gutsy win against a challenging side. “Defence was the difference in the game,” he said.
“I laid out a few challenges and they delivered the intensity and effort. They had a couple of players who we wanted to shut down and we did a good job. Defensively, it was a really good team effort.” At the other end, it was the Jets’ talls who did the damage on the scoreboard. Josie Stockill scored a game-high 25 points, while Courtney Duever scored 19 points. Kereama said both had really good games, but was quick to mention the work of the guards. “The guards were finding them in the right places,” he said. “It was definitely a real team effort and a good all-round game.” The Jets’ remain on top of the ladder, with nine wins from as many games but Kereama said the challenges would continue to come. “There’s a couple of teams which are getting more players into their groups.
“The second half of the season will look a lot different from the first half. Any team can beat any team on their day. “We’re not going to take any team lightly. We’ve still got a lot of improvement and hopefully we can stay ahead of the pack.” The Jets next match is against Eltham, which is coming off a 40-point loss to Bulleen Boomers. “They’re always dangerous. They will want a better performance than they had this week,” Kereama said. It’s not just the senior Jets’ women who have been on fire this season, the Jets’ youth league girls are second on the youth league women’s division 2 ladder with just one loss for the season. Lions miss by one point By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions played their best game of the Ballarat Football League season on Saturday against Darley, but it wasn’t enough for a win. In a tight tussling game, it came down to the dying minutes. The Devils came from behind to seal a one-point win, 10.13 (73)-11.6 (72) at Clarke Oval. It was a bittersweet result for Lions coach Ben Jordan. “We had the last shot on goal but it came up short. We got no reward but there was some good signs for us going forward.” Jordan said the team had focused on hitting the scoreboard early after being held goal-less in the first half last week against Bacchus Marsh. He said the Lions started well each quarter, with the Devils hitting back late in the quarters. Jordan said when the Devils got on top, they were beating the Lions on the spread and with outside run and carry. It was the leaders who showed the way for the Lions – ruckman David Kovacevic and midfielder Alik Magin were best in the loss. Jordan said the performances of Tom Donoghue, Alec Goodson and Allan O’Connor were also encouraging. Adam Short played well before going off with a back injury. Jordan said Short would see the physiotherapist on Monday to get a better idea of the extent of the injury. “He’s probably been our best player to date and been really important for us,” he said. “He’s been picked in the interleague squad but I think he’d be unlikely to play. He was hardly walking at one stage.” The loss leaves the Lions 1-3 heading into the weekend off for interleague. Jordan said the team needed to build on sustaining their run. “It’s been a tough start and we knew it would be the case. “Darley and Bacchus Marsh are really quality teams. We were in the game yesterday and we were in the game against Melton South. “I thought maybe we could have got over the line in one of those games. A performance like we had against Darley would have us in most games and give us a chance to win. “We’re focusing on East Point and taking it one game at a time.” Meanwhile, the Lions A-grade netballers kept their winning start to the season alive with a hard-fought win against the Devils. Without both their main goalers, the Lions worked themselves into the game. They led at every change, winning 36-26. Defender Ashleigh Hardy was best on court. Tigers coach OK with draw Kyneton was two goals up with less than a minute and a half to play – and didn’t come away with the win against Sandhurst at the weekend. The Tigers had to settle for a draw after two late Sandhurst goals levelled the scores, 14.12 (96)-13.18 (96), in the Bendigo Football League clash. Tigers coach Luke Beattie was disappointed, but pleased with how his players performed. “The boys fought the game out really well and I’m pleased with them,” he said. “We were down on personnel. We lost one player in the first 10 minutes of the game and were a rotation down all game. We then had a player sent off with 10 minutes to go in the last quarter. “Everything that could go wrong did go wrong.” The Tigers led for most of the game, including a game-high 25 points in the second quarter. The margin was back to three goals at the main break. Beattie said they never felt like they had the game in their hands, even when they led in the dying minutes. “We knew, with one less rotation, we weren’t running across the game the way we did in the first half,” he said. “They had the breeze in the final quarter and we were down a player on the field. We never put the game to bed.” Ben Weightman finished with five goals for the Tigers. The Tigers, with three wins and a draw, are on top of the ladder. “It’s been an outstanding start to the season,” Beattie said. “The boys have gelled well. “Hamish and Josh Govan and Rhys Magin have been really impressive leading the young group. “We’re starting to find we can match it with Strathfieldsaye, Golden Square and Sandhurst.” Beattie said he hoped Harrison Huntley, who received a corkie to the calf in the first quarter, would be right for the Tigers’ next game after the interleague break. A Bendigo league side will take on the Ballarat league this weekend. In other games, Gisborne suffered a 14.8 (92)-13.9 (87) defeat at the hands of Strathfieldsaye. Macedon maintains unbeaten record after scrappy win It wasn’t pretty, but Macedon was just happy to come away with the win against Riddell in the Riddell District Netball League. The undefeated Cats entered the grand final rematch against the Bombers as favourites, and were made to fight all the way in the 45-35 win. The Cats had a 12-goal lead at half-time and looked to have the game in control, but they knew they would need every goal of that lead. They entered the game without Tara Burnip and Madeleine Huggins, while Chelsea Kemp had to watch from the sidelines, as Victorian Netball League commitments meant she couldn’t play. Chloe Wilson and Janelle Birch were restricted to playing half a game each because of their VNL commitments. The Cats were going to call up several B grade players but were unable to after they suffered injuries in the B grade game. With Birch and Wilson headed to the bench, the Cats had few options and were forced to change things around in the second half.
The Bombers took advantage and reduced the margin to 10 goals at three-quarter time, then got to within six goals in the last quarter before the Cats regrouped. Cats coach Ciara Stewart said the win “felt lucky”. “We executed and did a great job and by half-time we had a really good lead,” she said. “With VNL restrictions, it meant one player couldn’t play and two players had to come off, which meant it restricted our team. “We knew we had to get out to a good start … the lead kept us in the game. We had to rework things and we just had to hang in there.” Wilson was the best of the goalers with 20, while Stewart shot 19 goals. Stewart said she was impressed with the work of defender Briarley Delaney, who recently joined the Cats. The Cats are 4-0 after a tough start to the season. Stewart said they were thrilled to be unbeaten while adjusting to having players with VNL
restrictions. Last season, the Cats had no VNL players. This season they have four. Stewart said they were hoping things would settle down in the next few weeks and allow the players to gain a bit more continuity. For the Bombers, who had a couple of B-grade players step up for the game, Tanisha Bardzinski shot 14 goals after coming on in the second half. Romsey is the only other undefeated team after beating Diggers Rest 52-36. Cats assert dominance By Tara Murray There were few highlights in the first three quarters of a lacklustre Riddell District Football League match between Macedon and Riddell on Saturday. With just 12 goals scored up until that time, few could have predicted a blistering finish. But that’s exactly what Macedon delivered. The Cats went into the last change with a 42-point lead and added another 12 goals in the final quarter to blow the margin out to more than 100 points, winning 21.14 (140)-5.7 (37). Cats coach Jeff Andrews said despite the outcome and such a big winning margin, it’s the toughest match they’ve had this season. It’s the first time in five years the Cats have beaten the Bombers. “The pressure they put on us in the first half – it was the toughest we’ve faced to date,” he said. “They were doing stuff in terms of numbers behind the ball and we had to react to deal with it, which we did. We didn’t do it well enough early which meant they were in the game. “We had some forward 50 dominance but we didn’t have scoreboard dominance.” Andrews said he didn’t see the last quarter performance coming at the last break. But he said the side’s finals exit last season, in a thriller to the Bombers, may have had something to do with it. Chris Kilmartin and Jason Cooke kicked five goals each for the Cats. Andrews said the forward line now has plenty of options and would be difficult for opposition to match-up because all the forwards are happy to share the goals around. And in a pleasing sign for the Cats, they won the game in a different fashion to their opening three matches, when they were out of the blocks quickly. “I’ve had it asked of me why the fast starts,” Andrews said. “We’ve changed nothing from what we did last year and at times last year we were poor starters. “We spoke before the game [that] if we don’t have a fast start we have to deal with that … We found a way to keep at it and it came late as opposed to early.” The Cats are the only team undefeated after four rounds. Andrews said they hadn’t expected that heading into the season. Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said his young side ran out of legs against one of the top sides in the competition. “I don’t want to put numbers behind the ball, I want them to learn a bit about playing football. Adam Short is the sole representative from the Sunbury Lions named in the Ballarat Football Netball League 23-man football squad for its AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships clash with Bendigo Football League on Saturday. Lions’ defenders Ashleigh Hardy and Elly Randall have been named in the league’s netball team which will also take on Bendigo FNL.

With two debutantes at the weekend, the Bombers have had 13 players play their first senior game. Sitting 1-3 after four rounds, Elliott said the Bombers were under no illusions where they are at. “We’ve got a lot of players who are not quite there yet, but they’re learning. It’s hard

We’ve got a bit of work to do.” Meanwhile, Romsey pulled off the biggest upset of the season so far with a six-point win against Diggers Rest. Sunbury United played out a tough 3-3 draw with La Trobe University in FFV state league 3 north-west. It was a high scoring first half, with both sides opening their accounts in the first 10 minutes. The goals continued with the score 3-3 at half-time. It was a stalemate in the second half with no more goals added. Djafari Mwarabu scored two goals for United and Daniel Sousa the other. United sits 10th on the ladder after six rounds. Gisborne scored its first win of the state league 5 west season with a 2-1 win against Maribyrnong Greens. Kyneton District remain winless after a 2-0 loss to Keilor Wolves.

RDNL ready for the challenge

The Riddell District Netball League has named an experienced line-up for its AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships clash with West Gippsland next weekend. The RDNL will host West Gippsland at Tony Clarke Oval and after a disappointing result last year against Alberton, is looking to return to the winners’ list. The side will be coached by Macedon coach Ciara Stewart. Stewart was appointed to the role after being named RDNL coach of the year last year. Stewart said they had opted for experience because the team had only had one training session together. The same side will also compete at the association championships later in the year. “The first option was to have the team of the year players be part of it,” she said. “The team was built off that but with a number of those players not in the league anymore and a short timeframe it wasn’t entirely possible.” The team is headlined by former Australian Diamond Natasha Chokljat. She’s joined by Diggers Rest teammates Amy Carroll and Toni Lind. Romsey’s Hope Evans and Danni Davidson, Macedon’s Chloe Wilson, Katie Clarke and Janelle Birch, Lancefield’s Anica Scherer, and Rupertswood recruits Prue Stanley and Rebecca Anstey have also been selected.
Sunbury Lions remain undefeated after three rounds in the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League. After strong wins in the first two rounds, the Lions faced surprise packets Craigieburn on Sunday. The Eagles also entered the match undefeated having won their first two matches in their inaugural season. The Lions set the win up early on Sunday, kicking 3.3 to nothing in the first quarter. By half-time the lead was out to 30 points. The Lions kicked further ahead in the third quarter, holding the Eagles to a scoreless quarter for the second time. Neither side could have much impact on the scoreboard in the final term, but it didn’t matter with the Lions having already sealed the win. The final score was 6.11 (47)-1.3 (9). The Lions now face Caroline Springs, which is coming off its first win, on Sunday. It isn’t just the Lions’ senior women who have started the season well – the youth league girls side is also undefeated. They had a bye at the weekend, but started the season on fire with four 100-plus point wins. The Lions have only conceded one point. The Lions under-15 team sits 1-2 after a 8.13 (61)-1.0 (6) loss to Essendon Doutta Stars on Sunday in EDFL under-15 youth girls division 2. The Lions under-12 girls in their first season are without a win after three rounds. On Sunday they lost to Moonee Valley 7.4 (46)-0.0 (0)
