Safety call on horror road A man who survived a horror crash in which his car “aquaplaned” off the edge of a steep 30-metre drop along Konagaderra Road in Clarkefield, is campaigning for more safety measures along the hazardous stretch of road. Rory Pope, of Romsey, said he was travelling to work at 7am on April 11 along the road, which runs between Romsey and Sunbury, after a heavy downpour when he lost control of his Holden stationwagon on the bend and careered over the edge. He told Star Weekly that the car flipped five times going down the embankment before coming to rest in Emu Creek at the bottom. Mr Pope’s partner Stacey Lee said his first

instinct was to find his mobile phone to call her. “He told me that when the car was tumbling he thought he was going to die,” Ms Lee said. “He said all he could see was my face and the faces of our two daughters in his mind – and he hung on for life.” She said that the couple wants Hume council to extend the guard rails that flank the nearby Emu Creek bridge crossing. “This road is dangerous on its own, but because there is no water drainage points, when it rains, the road is covered in a blanket of water,” she said. “There are no safety guard rails on the side of the road. There is a 30-metre cliff that drops straight down to the creek. Due to all the water on the road, he lost control and was flung

straight off the cliff. He rolled five times and ended up at the bottom wedged on a rock. “It’s a miracle that he walked away from it … but if there was a safety rail there, he would not have gone over. “Something needs to be done because someone could die.” Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said he would encourage the council to review the speed limit in the area. But he said installation of safety guards would depend on the amount of land available to support such a structure. Sunbury police Sergeant Tony Carroll described the stretch of road as notorious. He said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this incident.

“There has been a number of accidents in that area,” Sergeant Carroll said. “It’s because there is a cutting there … the speed limit there is actually 25 kilometres an hour – that’s how severe the turn is. “I’ve been to a number of incidents where vehicles have collided into the wall of the cutting because they overturn at the bend … if you don’t know the area too well, people over-steer most of the time.” He said he was not confident that council would extend barriers because of the remote location of that stretch of road. Sergeant Carroll urged drivers to drive to the conditions on the road and said he would support a lowering of the speed limit as an extra safety measure.

Council considers project green By Esther Lauaki More solar panels and energy efficient lighting and building works are being considered as Macedon Ranges council works toward slashing its greenhouse emissions by 25 per cent over the next five years. The projects are included in the council’s first draft climate change action plan which outlines how it will meet its target of reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 1910 tonnes by mid-2021. Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group vice

president Ralf Thesing said the action plan, now out for public feedback, is a step in the right direction. “We very much welcome the climate change document,” Mr Thesing said. “They are leading by example and that’s a good thing. “We have made submissions and are keen to work with council to get solar panels on the roofs of all houses in the shire … residents should also be involved in taking action on climate change, not just the council. “Climate change is the most important topic that residents should be involved with … the

Macedon Ranges is threatened by it because of our environmental exposure.” The council has already started reducing greenhouse emissions by installing pool covers at its aquatic centres, installing solar panels at the Gisborne Administration Centre and converting residential streetlights to energy efficient LEDs. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the plan also outlines how the council will support community efforts to address climate change. “This draft plan is a step in the right direction

Anzac tribute to war horses As thousands gathered at Anzac Day services around Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, a special visitor to Salesian College was teaching students about the four-legged heroes that played a significant role in Australia’s war history. Coolibah, a Waler horse, and her owner Angela Tiede, paid a visit to the Rupertswood school as part of its Anzac commemorations to

help students better understand the breed and their importance in history. Waler horses were the backbone of the Australian Light Horse mounted forces who served during the Second Boer War and World War I. More than 121,000 Walers were sent overseas to assist the allied armies in Africa, Europe, India and Palestine. The New South Wales-bred horses were especially suited to

working in the harsh climate of the Sinai Peninsula and Palestine, where they proved superior to the camel as a means of transport. Meanwhile, a National Servicemen’s Association display at Sunbury Memorial Hall shed light on the history of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheeba.

Up to 11 new mobile towers will go up around the Macedon Ranges in an effort to fix mobile blackspots on the Bendigo train line. The state government has joined with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone to roll out the $18 million regional rail connectivity project that aims to improve mobile coverage for commuters along the Melbourne to Bendigo route – which has more than 2.41 million passenger trips annually. Small Business, innovation and trade minister Philip Dalidakis said passengers will begin to experience improved mobile coverage between Sunbury and Riddells Creek, Kyneton and Malmsbury, Taradale and Chewton, Harcourt and Kangaroo Flat and near Macedon, from the end of this year. As part of the project, in-train technology will also be implemented to boost the signal from mobile towers outside the rail carriage to devices used inside. Mr Dalidakis said the installation of mobile reception repeaters in VLocity trains will also be piloted to boost in-train coverage from less than 50 per cent to almost full network coverage. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the project would keep commuters, some who spend up to 20 hours a week on regional trains, connected. “It’s frustrating when you can’t get a signal from the train and you have work or homework to do,” Ms Thomas said. “This project will allow commuters to use their travel time more effectively and access the same services that are afforded to metropolitan commuters.” Esther Lauaki

Life will reflect art when Woodend author Dee White heads to Paris for a month to research her latest book project. White will immerse herself in the world of Algerian Muslims of the Grand Mosque of Paris who saved Jewish children during World War II. The trip, for work on her novel, Beyond Belief, has been funded by a VicArts grant of Belief more than $9000. White, whose father fled Austria in 1938, said she was drawn to the Paris story because of her own Jewish history and the universality of its themes. “The world belongs to all of us,” she said. “We are all entitled to the same safety, freedom

and acceptance regardless of race or religion, and this story is a reminder of that. “Grants like these really open up horizons for regional writers like me. It’s a fabulous opportunity and I’m grateful for the government support that will make it a reality.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the VicArts grant would enable White to write a story for young readers that celebrated diversity and promotes acceptance. “I have the utmost respect for writers who can transform the experiences of the past into lessons for the future,” she said. The Sunbury and Macedon Ranges communities poured more than $50,000 into collection tins on Good Friday. Tin rattlers, door knockers and retailers from across the Ranges donated their time and money to the Royal Children’s Hospital annual appeal. Woodend, Newham and Hesket-Kerrie CFA brigades combined their efforts and raised more than $13,000. Woodend 1st lieutenant Mike Dornau said he was grateful for the support from the community. “A very big thank you to all of the CFA volunteers, family members and friends from the three brigades, around 70 in total, who volunteered to door knock,” lieutenant Dornau said. “A special thanks to everyone living in and visiting the Woodend, Newham, Hesket and Kerrie areas who donated so generously, raising a near-record total for the cause.” Williamson’s Foodworks’ Gisborne and Sunbury stores donated their takings from the day to the cause. “What an amazing effort from all our team members,” manager Kerry Crowley said. “This year we managed to raise an astonishing $35,000. Thanks to all our amazing staff and fantastic customers.” Kyneton townsfolk also dug deep for the Lions Club fundraising effort and raised nearly $4000.

A Riddells Creek backyard is about to be turned into a miniature farm as part of a new youth leadership program. The Field Trip, a Riddells Creek-based youth group, is looking for a home owner to volunteer their yards to be transformed into a farmlette (a small fertile farm), during spring. Program founder Paul Kooperman said the farmlette would be the first project of its kind in the area. “We are offering a Riddells Creek residents the rare opportunity to have their front or back yard turned into a lush mini-farm of home-grown produce,” Mr Kooperman said. “We look for different projects for the kids to complete each month that are not just about social inclusion but about helping kids to be leaders in their community. “The farmlette project is the perfect opportunity for them to take a leadership role because the kids will be driving it. “The idea is to take a backyard and plant produce and nurture it over time to the extent where the owner can gain a sustainable business out of it and eventually take produce to market.” Participants work at the garden with a mentor each Sunday from July to September, planting beans, greens, peas and other produce. “The mentor works with the young people and they learn about soils, what produce to plant, what it takes to live sustainably,” Mr Kooperman said. “They are setting an example for the community, and it’s something that has not been done in the area before. We want to immerse the kids in the idea that this is a better way of life.” For more information call 0400 344 746

Land rights story retold It’s a story that was hidden for too long. Coranderrk was a reserve outside present-day Healesville, established in 1863 by dispossessed Kulan clans in what had become the colony of Victoria. At a Victorian parliamentary inquiry in 1881, the men and women of Coranderrk took on the Aboriginal Protection Board to keep their land. Their story is told in Coranderrk, a play by Ilbijerri Theatre Co-operative and Belvoir that is touring Australia. Fan conduct case goes to trial A New Gisborne man accused of urinating on a woman at a Spiderbait concert denies that he is the person captured on security footage after allegedly committing the crime, a court has heard. Joel Morrison, 26, allegedly urinated on Belle Nolan at the Billboard Nightclub in Melbourne in February last year, and was later charged with displaying disorderly

conduct, behaving in an offensive manner and unlawful assault. He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 18. Mr Morrison’s lawyer, Michael McNamara, said that identity was an issue in the case, with police relying on video footage that allegedly showed his client being thrown out of the nightclub to prosecute him. “The police case isn’t going to get any

better,” he said. Outside court, Ms Nolan said the alleged incident was traumatic, and she had hoped to put it behind her. After hearing about the incident Spiderbait slammed the “disgusting behaviour”. “We are are so appalled at this awful and disgusting behaviour and that our valued fan Belle has had to endure at one our shows, how

can this happen?” they said in a post on the band’s Facebook page shortly after the alleged incident. Spiderbait has previously written a song called “Goin’ Off” about bad crowd behaviour. Chief Magistrate Peter Lauritsen set the matter down for a half-day trial on July 25. – The Age

Tylden’s fair is go Camel rides, aerial bungee rides, sweet treats and market stalls will be among the attractions at Tylden Primary School’s country fair this weekend. The annual fair will celebrate its 20th year on Saturday (April 29), with money raised destined for the school’s swimming program, maintenance and development of the grounds and ongoing costs for its Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden. Tennis teen takes off By Esther Lauaki A Gisborne teen is set to make her tennis dreams a reality as she heads to Florida for an international tournament and a chance to attend an elite sporting school. Earlier this month, 14-year-old Priscilla placed in the top four for her age at the recent state qualifier which gained her entry to the international IMG Academy Discovery Open in the United States of America. The Open is a two-week round-robin tournament of the best players aged between 12 and 16 from around the world. The winners from the boys and girls draws in each age bracket will not only earn a championship title but will also be evaluated throughout the tournament and by academy coaches for consideration in the elite program. Priscilla, who plays tennis for Taylors Lakes, says she hopes to follow in the footsteps of some of her heroes including Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams. Her mum, Maryanna Kovacevic, says it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. “This is what Priscilla has dreamed of doing since she started playing,” Ms Kovacevic says. “She was emotional and excited when she was selected and it’s a massive opportunity for her. “Priscilla has been playing tennis since she was four years old. By the age of one she was catching and throwing the ball while her sister was playing and I have video of her at the age of two actually playing tennis.” Ms Kovacevic says the family will need to raise $4000 to cover travel expenses.

On song with festival tunes Kyneton’s cafes, pubs, streets and town hall will resound with song as the Vocal Ranges Festival unfolds next weekend. The annual festival, which will run from Friday, May 5, to Sunday, May 7, will open with a concert featuring contemporary folk group the Mae Trio supported by local act the Pollyphonics Choir and finish with an Australian folk singalong led by Jane Thompson and James Rigby. MY PLACE It was the rolling green hills that called Jenny Lee to Gisborne from Singapore a decade ago. The new Australian citizen talks with Esther Lauaki.

My son and granddaughter have lived in Gisborne for more than 10 years and I officially moved to Gisborne in 1997 to live with them and apply for permanent residency. What made you choose to live in Gisborne? When we were in Singapore, a developer was advertising land packages in Australia. We were interested because in Singapore the land is expensive. We came over to look at the land in 1995 – it was very big and the prices were reasonable so my husband planned to retire here. We bought the land and he built this house. Tell me about your family. We have two grown children, a son and a daughter. I live with my son and my grand-daughter comes to visit. Before I lived here, I would visit twice a year and stay for three months at a time. When we came over for my son’s wedding, my husband died on the eve of the wedding. He suffered from motor neuron disease. What do you remember most about your husband? He made my dreams come true. I wanted a house with a big garden and in Singapore we

couldn’t have that. He was a family man. He was a harbour pilot and … his plan for our family did not pan out because he passed away at the age of 60. Why did you feel it was important for you to become an Australian citizen? I love Australia and the people. I can never adapt to the city life. I was born in Penang, Malaysia. It was an island, quiet and nice, and Australia is similar. I have about six friends who came to support me at my citizenship ceremony last month – I was very happy. What was your life like back in Singapore? Life was good back in Singapore, but there were no quiet places. Everybody goes shopping, eating out, but I prefer the country. I love that type of life. How do you get involved in the community? I meet with a lovely group of ladies every Monday at the Gisborne Presbyterian Church and we share the gospel and encourage each other. What is the best thing about the Macedon Ranges?

I love it here. In Gisborne, the people are very friendly. I do a lot of gardening. I love to plant and grow flowers, especially roses.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the truth really is in the eating ... We’re in Mr Griffiths for the poutine (French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy) – a dish we’ve never before eaten. But we’ve had plenty of loaded fries – and so far as I can tell, the Quebec-derived poutine could be the very first loaded fries. We order the regular poutine – called The Drummondville (small $7). I am perplexed and underwhelmed – the gravy and the curd lumps seem to add nothing to the fries. And the fries themselves seem lacklustre. Bennie loves them – cleaning the basket empty after I’ve grabbed a handful of fries untainted by the toppings. That figures – his eyes invariably light up when he sees the phrase “loaded fries” on a menu. Mine tend to glaze over. My argument is simple: Why ruin fries with toppings that make them soggy? So in fairness to Mr Griffiths, I’d say that even a serve a poutine fan deems of the very highest order would do nothing for me. Mr Griffiths is a newish and welcome addition to Macaulay Road. It’s a cool room, already with a relaxed neighbourhood vibe about it. Beer is big here and the place is done out in Melbourne black. It appears to be a hit – a previous mid-week attempt to try the food came to nothing as the place was packed. If poutine is your thing, there are variations to be had that include the likes of fried chicken, hot sauce, pickles, onion, bacon, maple syrup and more.

But as it turns out, our burgers are the highlight of our Saturday lunch – a judgment with which even my poutine-loving son agrees. He loves the crisp ‘n’ crunch of the beautifully cooked chook in his Buffalo chicken burger ($12.50) with its Frank’s red hot, lettuce and ranch sauce. My Bacon G’s burger deluxe ($12.50) is equally impressive with its beef, bacon, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onion and G sauce. And unadvertised cheese. Big statement: This is the best bacon I can recall ever enjoying in a burger – it’s both chewy and crunchy, it’s thick-cut and its flavour imbues almost every mouthful. As Bennie points out, there is nothing extravagant or sophisticated about our burgers. Indeed, at first blush they appeared to be on the plain and modest side. But the truth is in the eating – they win because good ingredients have been done well. By Tara Murray Sunbury Bowling Club’s Ethan Higgins held his nerve to claim the under-18 boys state title earlier this month. Sixteen-year-old Higgins won three games to make the final against Cooper Wescombe. It was tricky conditions, but Higgins had a slight advantage with the championships held at his home green, Sunbury. “It feels really good,” Higgins said. “I was a bit surprised that I won. I knew I was a chance to make the final, but there was a lot of good players and I knew it would be tough winning four matches to win.” Higgins won the final 25-20. It was one of two finals he contested at the championships – he finished runners-up with Mitch Cole in the boys pairs final. Higgins almost didn’t compete in the pairs. “My partner pulled out so I called him [Mitch] up on the day,” he said. “We had played a bit together, but I didn’t think we would go that well. We didn’t expect to make the final.” While bowls is an unusual sport for most teenagers, for Higgins it is a chance to return to the sporting field. After being king hit in a school football match in 2014, Higgins was told by doctors he could no longer play contact sport. “It definitely feels like a second chance with sport,” he said. “I thought it would be a lot different than it is. I thought it’d be like Cracker Jack the movie with everyone in whites.” He started playing bowls at Gisborne, before moving across to Sunbury. In the recently finished season, he made his debut in Sunbury’s division 1 pennant side. Next it’s a waiting game to find out whether

The Riddell District Football League has named an initial 49-man training squad ahead of next month’s AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships clash with West Gippsland. The squad, named last week by coach Arron Bray and his coaching panel, includes players from all 12 clubs, ranging from nine representatives from Macedon to one from Rockbank and Melton Centrals. Among the Cats players named are former AFL players Matt Dick and Daniel Markworth. Cats coach Jeff Andrews is one of three assistant coaches. Rupertswood has eight players named. Three former AFL-listed players, Cale Morton, Taylor Hine and Lachlan Langford head the seven Diggers Rest players selected. Daniel Gregory is the odd name out of the Sunbury Kangaroos players selected, with the other five all new to the club this season. Wallan also has six players chosen, with playing coach Daniel Nolan selected in the squad and as an assistant coach. Five Romsey players have been picked, along with four Riddell players. Woodend-Hesket coach Ross Sleight is an assistant coach, while three of his players have been selected. Lancefield players are Jon Kent and James Wooster. Broadford duo James Philpott and Rex Hickman, Melton Centrals’ Blake Henderson and Rockbank’s Tom Evans round out the squad.

Last year we lost the same game by 48 goals, this year we lost by 30 goals. “They pulled away in the first quarter, but we improved each quarter.” Roberts said they would take time to gel with only two of last year’s A-grade team part of this year’s side. “Only Madeline Staresina and Georgia O’Loughlin are back this year,” she said. “Sarah Duff is an under-19 player who will play permanently up. She’s just 15 and an up-and-coming player. “We’ve got a core seven players and we’ve got a couple of B-grade girls that can play up. Our under-19s are on a roster and will rotate through the A-grade side.” She said there were positive signs in all three areas of the court, but knows they will only get better.

The results so far might show losses, but it hasn’t been all disappointment for Woodend-Hesket in the opening two rounds of the Riddell District Netball League season. The Hawks’ start to the season hasn’t been an easy one, with games against finals hopefuls Lancefield and Diggers Rest. Their next five games are against sides which all made finals last season. It was a high-scoring match against the Burras on Saturday, with the Hawks paying for a slow start, eventually losing 70-49. Sarah Duff and Georgia O’Loughlin were the best for the Hawks, while Madeline Staresina scored 33 goals. Speaking before Saturday’s game, new Hawks’ coach Wendy Roberts said it had been a positive start to the season, despite the results. “Going into round one we didn’t know the opposition and it’s always going to take time

The Hawks won three games last season and are looking to build on that this year. “With Maddie and Alex Watkins we’ve got height and speed in the attacking end,” Roberts said. The Hawks under-19 team looks like it will be strong again. Last season, they became the first Hawks netball side to win a final. In other A-grade results, Riddell was too strong for Sunbury Kangaroos and Lancefield made it two from two with a win against Rockbank. Macedon was due to play Rupertswood on Anzac Day. Bulldogs off to a flyer By Tara Murray Gisborne’s strong start to the Bendigo Netball League season continued with a big win against South Bendigo on Saturday. After a 56 goal win in round one against Kyneton, the Bulldogs backed it up with a 55-25 win on Saturday. The victory came without coach Guy Keane who was in Queensland as part of the victorious Victorian men’s team at the National Championships. Keane said they couldn’t have asked for much more in the first two rounds. “They’ve been two really good wins,” he said. “I was really impressed with what they did on the court in round one, and by all reports it was much the same in round two.” Most of the Bulldogs squad from last season has returned, either in the top side or have filtered down into the A-reserve side with more depth this season. Melinda Luke, who won the under-17 league best and fairest award last season, will play a greater role in the A-grade team, having previously played some senior netball. Another young gun, Keara Fitzgerald, has also stepped up into the top team. Both were part of the Bulldogs under-17 premiership team last season. Keane said Fitzgerald, who is part of the Ballarat Sovereigns under-19 team, was keen to learn. “Right from the first session that I’ve come up here she’s been really easy to coach. “She’s like a sponge. She’s soaking everything in.” Ella Bertacchini has also joined the team. Bertacchini brings Victorian Netball League experience and last season played in the North Gippsland Football Netball League. She previously played under Keane as part of the under-21 Victorian team last year. Keane said despite the great start to the season, they know they’ve got a lot of work to again feature in finals. “It’s a long season. We’ll keep tracking away on the training court and improving.” In other games, Kyneton suffered a 53-23 loss to Maryborough. In the football, it was a tough day for Gisborne which suffered a loss to South Bendigo. The Bulldogs were on the back foot early, trailing by 13 points at the first break. South Bendigo managed to extend the lead in every quarter to win, 19.8 (122)-13.7 (85). Kyneton made it two wins in a row, with a big 20.8 (128)-7.8 (50) victory against Maryborough.

Sunbury Jets’ winning streak has continued with a thumping win against Warrandyte Venom in Big V women’s state championship division. The Jets defence was at its best and they converted at the other end to win 94-43. Courtney Duever top scored with 22 points, as all but one player hit the scoreboard. The men’s division 1 side had an 87-77 loss to Melbourne University.

East Sunbury lost a thrilling round three match against Roxburgh Park in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Thunder led at every break, but a 4.1 to 2.6 final quarter proved the difference with the Magpies winning, 10.8 (68)-9.13 (67). Callum Lever was the best in the loss.

Seven Calder Cannons players have been named in the girls Vic Metro squad for June’s national championships. Cannons skipper Lauren Caruso, Monique Conti, Sarah Dargan, Georgia Patrikios, Madison Prespapkis, Carla Rendelmann and Molly Warburton have all been named in the 31 person squad.

Riddell’s Mick Allen and Bacchus Marsh’s Madushanka Ekanayaka have been named in the Central Highlands Region’s team of the year. Allen, in his first season with Riddell, was named captain of the team and one of the opening batsmen while Ekanayaka was named one of four bowlers.

Soccer

Sunbury United suffered a 2-0 loss to Brimbank Stallions in FFV state league 3 north-west. Scores were level for most of the game, before the Stallions hit the front in the 73rd minute. They sealed the win in the 92nd minute. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District and Gisborne both suffered losses.

Tigers’ tough start continues as Rams break drought Lancefield’s disappointing start to the Riddell District Football League season has continued, with the Tigers recording their lowest score since 2012 against Rockbank on Saturday. After a close first-up loss against Woodend-Hesket in round one, the Tigers were looking to rebound against a Rams side which also suffered a close opening round loss. Only two points separated the teams at quarter-time but the Rams extended their lead to 14 points at the main break. Having had 14 scoring shots to five in the first half, the Rams could have been much further ahead. They blew the game open in the third quarter, kicking 7.3 for the term to lead by 50 points at three-quarter time, to set up the side’s first win since July 2015. The last quarter was nothing special with neither side scoring a goal. The Rams ran out winners 10.17 (77)-3.8 (26). It was single goalkickers for the Tigers, with Drew Hynninen and James Wooster the best for the side on a disappointing day.

The Tigers are one of three sides without a win in the opening two rounds. Last year’s runners-up Riddell had an improved performance on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough for a win against Wallan. Two of the more disappointing sides in round one, both Riddell and Wallan were looking to open their accounts on Saturday. Not much separated the teams until the last quarter, when the Magpies kicked five goals to three to win 12.11 (83)-9.11 (65). Haydn Ross was the best for the Bombers in the loss. Ross and Tim Walsh top the goalscorers for the Bombers with two goals apiece. The Sunbury Kangaroos are undefeated after a big win against Broadford in the battle of the Kangaroos. Sunbury jumped out of the blocks and was never headed, winning 21.15 (141)-7.6 (48). Diggers Rest also remains undefeated after a solid win against Woodend-Hesket. A 6.4 to 0.3 first quarter was the difference between

the two sides with the Burras winning 13.12 (90)-6.8 (44). Josh Wallace kicked four goals in the win, with Thomas Taylor named best for the Burras. For the Hawks, Ethan Gove and Daniel Toman kicked two goals each. Toman was named best in the loss. They join Romsey as round two winners, with the Redbacks defeating Melton Centrals the previous Thursday in a split round. The Redbacks proved too strong for the Centrals to get their first win of the season. The match of the round between Macedon and Rupertswood was due to be played on Anzac Day. Lions slip into winning form

By Tara Murray When putting together a team for the inaugural girl’s TAC Cup competition, the Calder Cannons were keen to get it right from day one. While they had previously identified many of the playing squad through their academy program, this year was a new beginning. “I’ve been lucky to work at Cannons for a long time,” recalls Alicia Eva who, along with Jason Peak, coached the girls team this year. “I’ve worked with the boys in the under-15s, under-16s and TAC Cup. We tried to bring across that pathway to our program. “Credit to Pauline Leslie [Cannons Youth girls manager] and Ian Kyte [Cannons regional manager] for wanting to do it properly. The club has been big supporters of girls football. “We started training in October and were training two times a week. “There was optional recovery sessions which most of the girls attended. They wanted to be involved.” The Cannons started the five-week season with a 96-point thrashing of Gippsland Power. It was soon followed by a hard-fought win against Eastern Ranges, then dominant wins against Western Jets and Oakleigh Chargers, to start the season 4-0. With the premiership awarded to the side which finished on top of the ladder, a win against Bendigo Pioneers would all but seal the premiership. Murray Bushrangers were also undefeated but the Cannons held a higher percentage. The Cannons completed the season undefeated with a 63-point win against Bendigo on Good Friday. The Bushrangers then needed a big win to claim the premiership. They got the win, but finished 180.36 per cent behind the Cannons. While premierships are the ultimate outcome for local football clubs, for the Cannons it was icing on the cake. Eva said the end result was reward for all the effort the players and staff had put in during the season. “It’s pretty exciting and the girls are still really pumped about it,” she said. “Anyone who has worked in the TAC Cup knows the goal is development and now there’s a pathway to AFLW league. “The goal as coaches is to get players drafted. You build an ethos of development and building skills. “Getting wins on the board is a bonus.” Eva said she expected some of the Cannons players to join her in the AFLW next year and the years to come. Eva finished runner-up in Collingwood’s women’s best and fairest award. She said Lauren Caruso, Alicia Rooth and Chloe Molloy

were three players who may not have been on the radar at the start of the season, but deserved opportunities based on their development. Molloy, a former basketballer, topped the goalkicking while sharing the league’s best and fairest award with Dandenong Stingrays’ Bridie Kennedy. They finished one vote clear of star Cannon Madison Prespakis, who only

played four games. Prespakis will return to the Cannons next season. “We sat down as club and had a list of players who would definitely get drafted,” Eva said. “We earmarked some who might get drafted. It may be this year, or it could be two to three years after playing a bit more senior football.”

Sunbury Lions overcame Melton in difficult conditions to open their season’s account in the Ballarat Football League. Playing under lights at Clarke Oval on Saturday night, players from both sides struggled with dewy conditions which left the ground slippery under foot. After a fairly even first half with both sides struggling to handle the ball cleanly, the Lions opened up the game in the second half to win 8.12 (60)-3.4 (22). Lions’ coach Ben Jordan said it wasn’t the greatest spectacle of football, but they were happy to get the win. “We opened up the play in the third quarter, kicking three goals in a short period of time,” he said. “The guys held up well around the contest. We had a lot of play in our forward half for long periods of time. “It was a little disappointing not to have capitalised a bit more though.” In a strong defensive effort from the Lions, they restricted the Bloods to just one goal in the second half, which came after the final siren. Jordan said at the other end there was some good signs with their new-look forward line, which is still a work in progress. Ben Said kicked three goals on Saturday night, while Alec Goodson is another who has been working hard in that half of the ground. Patrick MacDonough was best on ground and was well supported by Adam Short, Nathan Bridgland and Alik Magin. The Lions sit 1-1 after their first two games, after a first-up loss against Melton South in a game they could have won. Jordan said as a coaching group they were happy with where the side is at having had several changes over the off season. The Lions’ next opponent is Bacchus Marsh in a rematch of last season’s grand final. Meanwhile in the A-grade netball, the Lions put on a dominant display against the Bloods. The Lions led 17-1 at quarter-time on the back of 15 goals at 100 per cent accuracy from Chloe Curran. It was much the same for the rest of the game, with the Lions scoring at least 20 goals in the last three quarters to win, 79-15. Curran was best on court, shooting 63 goals from 69 attempts.
