Good news on a bad day Kevin Law doesn’t remember much about the moment his heart stopped – but he knows he was in the right place at the right time. The Sunbury cyclist was out for a morning ride through Heysen Drive Reserve in February when he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed onto a nearby park bench. “It wasn’t until I stopped for a rest because I felt fatigued that I collapsed,” Mr Law said. “I only found out what happened when I came to.” It was local teacher Greg Purcell and off-duty fire officer Tony Smith who saved Mr Law’s life. Both men were given Ambulance Victoria Bystander awards last week. “I found Kev unconscious on the ground and then rang triple-0 before I started CPR,” Mr Purcell. He said the real reward was seeing Mr Law up and about again. Mr Smith rushed in to help with resuscitation as paramedics arrived. “It’s amazing to do so much training and then to see somebody up and about like Kev is – that’s pretty unusual,” he said. Stray stock safety fears By Esther Lauaki Farmers are being urged to take extra measures to keep their animals contained with Macedon Ranges council fielding 80 complaints – 40 in the past month – about livestock on the loose this year. Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said wandering livestock on roads was a serious safety issue. She said fortunately most of these complaints were made during the day. “Livestock owners must ensure that their livestock are adequately confined and that there
is enough feed and water on the property to sustain them,” Ms Lindner said. “Often the livestock break through fences in search of food.” Ms Lindner said areas of concern included Darraweit Guim and Clarkefield where there were a number of larger land holdings. Three Chain Road, which carries a significant amount of traffic, was also a hotspot for stock wandering. Ms Lindner said council officers first try to contact the owner of livestock and ask them to retrieve the animals, and then ensure they repair fences to prevent another escape. From $

“Where livestock are wandering on roads, the first priority is to secure the stock to the nearest property to eliminate the risks to drivers and the stock,” Ms Lindner said. “Council works with professional stock contractors to safely impound and transport stock … so officers may ask that stock are secured to private property temporarily until contractors can attend.” Last month, two men were taken to hospital after their car hit a herd of cows wandering along the Calder Freeway in Sunbury in the early hours. The men, aged in their 20s, suffered minor
injuries when their sedan hit and killed two cows. Hume council director corporate services, Daryl Whitfort, said the council “investigates reports of uncontained stock and the property which they belong to”. “If it is found that the property’s fencing is inadequate, council issues property owners with a notice to comply, which requires that they take all measures to ensure stock is contained,” he said. Mr Whitfort said owners could face an on-the-spot fine of $200 or up to $2000 if the matter went to the magistrates court. From $

Autumn stoush splits the Mount Battlelines are being drawn between those who love Mount Macedon’s autumn leaves pageant and those who don’t. A group of residents is claiming that locals are leaving the area in droves to flee unruly tourists who flock to the town to see the season’s changing colours during the April celebration. But those with tourism interests claim the relatively recent autumn phenomena is boosting the local economy and creating jobs. At a community meeting at Mount Macedon last Wednesday, residents raised concerns
about traffic, litter, trespassing, a lack of toilets and property damage caused by what they said was a tourist “invasion”. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said people were being ignored in favour of commercial interests. “Frustrated residents feel they are not being adequately consulted or considered in council’s promotion of additional tourism in the area, which among other things is detrimentally affecting residential amenity, traffic, privacy and residents’ access to their own properties,” she said. One resident, who asked not to be named,
told Star Weekly disputes between residents and those with commercial interests in the area were reaching fever pitch. “We have decided that we will form a delegation to go to council because we are unsatisfied with the solutions that have been presented thus far,” she said. “It should not be up to the community and ratepayers to provide toilets for them to make money.” Autumn Leaves committee member Jamie Byron, who was not at last week’s meeting, has previously said the key to the festival’s success is managing parking and other public amenities.
“At a community meeting [in December] to discuss the challenges our community face during autumn, there was strong support from those in attendance for residents across Macedon and Mount Macedon to use consistent signage advising visitors during autumn that a property is a private property,” Mr Byron posted to a residents’ Facebook page last week. Council has a downloadable sign written in English and translated into Mandarin that says, “Please do not enter private property” for residents to hang on their front gates. Sports courts top wish list
All aboard Macedon Ranges train enthusiasts – there’s a model railway club on its way. The Vintage Machinery Society wants to form a club for lovers of little machines. Vice president Tim Reid says the desire to start a club arose after a large train set, that spreads about 15 metres long and six metres wide, was donated by a collector who spent 25 years building it. He says modeling enthusiasts could join and help to expand on the set’s current layout. “The train set has been generously donated via a benefactor who wishes to see his work preserved and enjoyed by future generations,” Mr Reid says. “The donor needed to ensure that it could be transferred to a group who could not only house it, but continue it on as an operational layout.” The society used a crane and trucks to transport the layout from Bendigo to its new home at Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society headquarters in New Gisborne. Mr Reid said society members were humbled by the donation. Now they’re after new members with an interest in model trains to help add the finishing touches and get the train set operational as soon as possible. “It is sure to be a hit with both younger and older train enthusiasts in the district.” Mr Reid said that the layout features traditional Australian countryside, complete with scale gum trees but also has a number of large bridges and railway station scenes. Other highlights include the large engine shed, complete with a remote-control turntable to turn the model locomotives.
Access to sports courts and infrastructure is still an issue for residents as the Macedon Ranges struggles to keep up with booming participation in sports and youth activities. Macedon Ranges councillor Janet Pearce said most people who attended a Malmsbury listening post last week raised concerns about infrastructure to support activities for youth. Skate parks, works on the tennis and basketball courts, cricket nets and improvements to change rooms were also high priorities. The comments echo those of a coalition of clubs, schools, associations and state bodies which has been pushing for a Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub to be set up. The group is advocating for a hub which would include administration space, storage, catering and bar facilities. Macedon Ranges Basketball Association president Megan Condron said an influx of new members supported calls for a six-court stadium in a central location. Ms Condron said a boost of more than 200 new player registrations this year was a good sign for sports across the region. But she told Star Weekly that games and training schedules were being spread across Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve at Macedon and John Marsden’s Alice Miller School courts. “It’s getting very tight on the bus loads that we transport for mid-week trainings. “We’re trying to get every child a game and also allow them to train during the week.”

Lone Pine takes root
The Sunbury Returned and Services League has had its beloved Anzac Lone Pine replaced after it was destroyed by vandals in January. The original pine tree, planted on Anzac Day in 2014, had its limbs snapped, but last Wednesday, a purpose-built steel guard allowed for a new seedling, also a descendant of the original Lone Pine, to be planted by Hume council. Candid camera bid for big cats By Esther Lauaki Tall tales of a big cats roaming the ranges are being put to the ultimate test. Kevin Braunton, co-founder of the Melbourne-based Victorian Big Cats Research Group, is out to crack the mystery behind Lancefield’s big-cat sightings. The group, which investigates leads from around the state, was formed in 2015 and has nearly 300 members who want to sort fact from folklore – including big-cat sightings reported in the Macedon Ranges district over the years.
In March, Mr Braunton placed solar-powered cameras that broadcast recorded sounds similar to those of distressed animals in local bushland in the hope of luring wild cats in to camera range. “We have been researching sightings of the mysterious black cats being seen throughout Victoria, including the Macedon Ranges,” Mr Braunton said. “Most of our research has, up to this point, been in the Otways, where we have had our own sightings, but this last month we have been actively searching in the Lancefield area.
“A Macedon Ranges farmer contacted us after one of their horses was attacked in March. “The horse had all the hallmarks of a big-cat-style attack. “The injuries to the animal were high on its body and it had what looked like claw marks on it. That’s what brought us to the area.” So far the solar-powered cameras have captured footage of curious deer and kangaroos fossicking around, but Mr Braunton said he was hoping for more significant footage.
Mr Braunton, who had his own sighting of a big cat while holidaying in the Otways a few years ago, said he was far from alone in his belief that the elusive beasts are out there. “You do get ridiculed when the issue arises in conversation, but then there are so many other people that I encounter that have also had sightings,” he said. “We would like to hear from anyone who has had a sighting. Mums do cool aid Macedon Ranges mums are being encouraged to gather little things which will help families in need in a big way, in the lead-up to Mother’s Day. Donations of toiletry items, nappies, second-hand children’s clothes and unopened tins of formula are being sought as part of the One Mother to Another drive. Collection stations have been set up across Woodend, Macedon, Newham, Tylden and New Gisborne. St Kilda Mums, a not-for-profit group that works with maternal health nurses and local social service agencies to help new parents care for their children, is at the helm of the initiative, which runs until April 28. Macedon organiser Kristin Kerr says the drive is a way for local mums to give back. “This is Australia and the thought of a mother who can’t afford to buy nappies or formula for their child is why we are all so willing to help.
“For mums from the Macedon Ranges, it can be difficult to get to Melbourne to help out the team at St Kilda Mums. “[But] It’s easy to help – put together a little toiletries bag and write a note to let someone in need know that you care and then drop it off to one of our collection points.” Details: 0438 277 194 Esther Lauaki

Macedon Ranges artists are preparing to put their best works forward as part of the annual Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studio. Gisborne sculptor Anthony Vanderzweep (pictured) is one who will be opening his studio doors across the region from April 28. “I’ve been making sculptures in bronze for more than 27 years,” Vanderzweep says. “I have a preference for animals, but rather than produce a study of nature, I like to find and emphasise an animal’s strengths and beauty.” The program, in its fifth year, allows artists to demonstrate their processes and display their creative spaces.
Thirty artists have been handpicked to showcase their work across three weekends in April and May, with the official launch on April 28 from 6-8pm at Daylesford’s Convent Gallery. Event co-ordinator Jill Rivers said the open studios would reveal the depth of artistic talent in Hepburn and Macedon Ranges shires. “We’ve got a really good spread of artists from across the region,” she said. Catch-22 fears on house prices Two people, three jobs and a dream getting harder and harder to reach. That’s the story of one young couple who, like thousands of hopeful first homeowners, are struggling to keep up with Australia’s runaway property prices. That struggle is leading John Fernandes, a 25-year-old HR professional, and his partner, Sherie, a nurse, to re-assess their options, with their gaze switching from Sunbury to the likes of Melton. Data group CoreLogic reported this week that Melbourne house prices jumped 1.9 per cent in March, bringing the annual growth rate to almost 16 per cent.
Across all capital cities price growth hit 12.9 per cent – the fastest rate in seven years. For Mr Fernandes, the figures confirmed what he already knew. The couple has been following the market closely for a couple of years and started saving seriously about six months ago. The plan was to scrape together about $70,000 for a 20 per cent deposit on a $350,000 house in Sunbury. “That’s now been thrown out of the window because a lot of the prices are now up to about $450,000 to $500,000,” he said. Faced with shifting goal posts, they are rejigging their budget to see how much of their
combined $130,000 income can be funnelled into savings. Cheaper suburbs such as Melton, are now on the cards. Meanwhile, they stay with parents rather than pay rent and Mr Fernandes works six days a week – five days at his HR job and one shift at The Good Guys on weekends. But with prices moving so quickly, Mr Fernandes said he feared waiting too long to buy their first home. “I’m afraid we’ll be stuck in that catch 22, where we go ahead and start saving more but the house prices just keep going up more and more and more,” he said. Mr Fernandes said friends and colleagues
who go to auctions had told him horror stories of being outbid by investors, so he will watch with interest to see if May’s federal budget includes measures to help first-home buyers. Despite the difficulties, Mr Fernandes remains optimistic about his chances of getting into the market – albeit later than he planned – and said he felt “blessed” to have a good job that made home ownership a consideration. “We had to wait until I had a decent income before we even thought about it, but even now I’m working two jobs just to balance it out,” he said. Discus kids in a spin Gisborne’s little athletes are set to throw their all into new discus cages. Grade six pupil Alonzo was one of the first to try out two cages which were recently opened at Gisborne Little Athletics’ home ground at Dixon Field. Club spokesman Steve van Emmerik said the new cages would provide increased safety for participants and spectators. “They give athletes the ability to use a proper spin technique and the opportunity for athletes to become comfortable throwing in cages before they reach regional or higher level competitions,” Mr Van Emmerik said. He said there were already a number of strong discus competitors in the community. “The cages are available for use by local Little Athletics clubs, schools who use the facility for their athletics days and local

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes behind the wheel to discover Uber eats ‌ After spending hours with my friend, the Uber Food Dude, cruising the inner west making deliveries and talking with a cross-section of restaurant folk, one thing is clear ‌ they may not like giving Uber a hefty slice of the price of each meal dispatched but they were all, to one degree or another, enthusiastic about being involved. The reasons? Simple. No need to hire drivers ‌ and keeping faith with regulars. A weekly deposit in their business bank account – my understanding is that, under current arrangements, Uber takes 35 per cent of each meal’s cover price – is guaranteed. And – importantly, going by the feedback I get – promotional value and the exposure via the Uber Eats app. Uber takes the photos that go with every eater entry on the app – and they are very good. Gorgeous, actually! My Uber Eats driver pal had previously regaled me with stories and explanations of how it all works, including the very slick technology that makes it possible. Disappointingly, for the tabloidish story-seeking journo that resides within in me, there has been little by way of outrageous yarns arising from his regular delivery routine. Just eateries preparing food for regular folks. I think everyone understands that such an operation runs on very tight margins – just like the restaurant game itself. But still, something doesn’t quite make sense for me in all this ‌ how is it viable when Uber
takes a hefty slice and the drivers get something like $8 to $12 for each delivery? At Luxsmith in Seddon, we’re told it’s their first night doing Uber – and early in the evening, they’ve already seen more than a dozen orders go out the door. That seems pretty good going to me. The recipient of our Luxsmith delivery, for whom this is also an Uber debut, is happy to see us. There are idiosyncrasies in the ordering habits of inner-west Uber Eats users. One of our deliveries, for instance, finds us taking a burger meal from Mr Burger at Yarraville Gardens to Edgewater – and only a couple of blocks from St Burgs and its fine burgers. Later in the night, my pal makes the journey from Happy Four in Yarraville to a part of Footscray where there are a couple of perfectly fine and very similar Chinese establishments. Go figure! For my friend, doing Uber Eats makes all kinds of sense. The money may not be of the get-rich-quick variety, but a handful of deliveries a night for a couple of nights a week adds up to some handy income. Unlike the Uber passenger service, there are no members of the public with whom to deal – just happy, and hungry, customers. Deliveries are – thanks to the Uber driver app “ping� alerts to nearby drivers – almost always very local, rarely more than a few kilometres.

SPORT Leaky defence a problem for Sunbury The loss leaves Sunbury with a win and two losses after three games. One area in which the team will look to improve is its defence – the side has conceded 12 goals this season, the second most goals in the division. Only bottom side Melbourne City has conceded more goals. Sunbury’s next match will be against Brimbank Stallions on April 22. Burras tight and right By Tara Murray The Riddell District Football League grand final rematch was no thriller, with Diggers Rest again proving too strong for Riddell. Both sides fielded very different line-ups from those of last season’s decider, won by Diggers Rest in extra time. On Saturday the Burras led by 21 points at quarter-time. Both sides scored 1.1 in a more even second quarter, but four goals to none in the third, opened up the Burras’ lead to 44 points. Heavy rain and strong winds wreaked havoc in the final quarter. Neither side could do much with the ball in poor visibility and the lights needed to be turned on. The Burras held strong in the terrible conditions, kicking 4.8 while keeping the Bombers scoreless for a 14.13 (97)-3.3 (21) win. Burras coach Shaun Sims was full of praise for his side’s defenders in holding the Bombers to just three goals. “It’s always best to start the year with a win,” he said. “After the five-minute mark of the second quarter, we kept them goalless – to keep an expected top side to that score at our ground was a really good effort.” Jamie Lobb kicked three goals for the Burras with Chris Lawton, Mark Freeth and Matthew Krul kicking two each. Sims said Lobb, Cale Morton and Krul were the three standouts with not many players playing well for all four quarters. He said Krul was exceptional playing up forward and in the midfield instead of his usual defensive role. For the Bombers, the Treweeks, Stephen and Michael, along with Scott Walsh, were the side’s best. Sims said his side still had a lot of room for improvement and would benefit from another two weeks on the track before its next game. For their next match, the Burras will travel to take on Woodend-Hesket on April 22. Sims said the Burras had a new look about them this year. “There was seven or eight guys who were not part of the grand final side,” he said of the side that beat Riddell. “We brought in three or four from under-18s and a couple of other guys who have been performing strongly. “It’s the youngest team we’ve had in about five years. Those who got their opportunities were exceptional.” Sims said he expected four or five players would return to the side in the next couple of rounds. In other matches, Macedon had a big win against Wallan, Woodend-Hesket snuck home against Lancefield, Rupertswood smashed Broadford by 195 points, Melton Centrals defeated Rockbank and Sunbury Kangaroos came from behind to beat Romsey. Only one match will be played this week, with Romsey hosting Melton Centrals under lights at Romsey Park on Thursday night.
Netball draw reshuffled The Riddell District Netball League A-grade competition will consist of just 10 teams this season. Broadford and Wallan haven’t been able to get the numbers to field A-grade teams, reducing the competition by two teams. Both clubs will still have B-grade, C-grade and under-19 sides. It’s the second time in three seasons that Broadford hasn’t had an A-grade netball side. The situation could have been far worse – just over six weeks ago it had 14 netball players across the board. It has since signed Lee Maddinson as netball co-ordinator and appointed coaches for the under-19, C-grade and B-grade teams. Wallan has struggled to appoint a coach, while several A-grade players have left the area or are no longer playing. The withdrawal of Wallan and Broadford from the A grade competition has meant changes to the netball fixture, which will no longer be identical to those of the other netball grades and football. Teams that were scheduled to play Wallan and Broadford will play each other, with the exception of round one. AFL Goldfields netball manager Kim Bailey said the round one fixture had been tweaked to ensure teams weren’t playing each other four times. Had the fixture stayed the same, Rupertswood and Macedon would have played each other twice at the start of the season. Bailey said that while the solution wasn’t ideal, it was the best option and all the clubs had been supportive of the decision. “The problem we had was if we left it the way it was, two teams would have byes each week and two clubs would have only played 12 games for the year. “You’d rather have teams playing than missing out. One team would have had three weeks off in a row. “There would have been implications for the ladder and we would have had to go to a games ratio system.” Bailey said times of individual games could be changed to accommodate coaches and players who may need to go between locations on the same day if they’re involved in more than one of their clubs’ netball teams. Some A-grade netball games will still be held at Wallan or Broadford in a bid to reduce travel for clubs already competing at those grounds. Tara Murray

Thunder strikes as disappointing Jets fail to fire Lanard Copeland didn’t mince his words after the Sunbury Jets’ 30 point loss to Keilor Thunder in Big V men’s division 1. The Jets had opportunities to win their first match, but didn’t fire a shot in the first quarter against Thunder on Saturday night, trailing 30-8 after the first 10 minutes. While the Jets were better for the rest of the match, there was no coming back from that margin, eventually losing 106-76. Copeland said it was one of the worst performances he had seen in his coaching career, which left both him and the playing group embarrassed. “We were terrible,” he said. “I thought we were closer than we are, but we got ahead of ourselves. “They gave us a spanking. They were up 12-2 or 14-2 and we were shell-shocked. At the end we tried to hang in, but we were down 20 to 30 points all game.
“My guys don’t know each other, but we were terrible. What we don’t know how to do yet is get back into a game in a quarter like that.” While disappointed with the overall result of the match, Copeland said he was pleased with how they fought out the game, with the teams drawing the final quarter. Daniel Jackson, coming off the bench, topscored for the Jets with 18 points Copeland said the key would be to continue to practice together and make sure the players started to gel. He scheduled an early morning training session on Sunday morning. “The message has been sent. If we play like we did we’ll be training every Sunday morning. “It was a two and half hour running session, a defensive session. I think we’ve become closer as a team after it. It was a very good session.” With the exception of Saturday night’s game, Copeland said there had been a lot of positives out of the season so far.
“The first game we were a new team and the second game we had the game won being seven points up with two minutes to go, but lost on the last shot of the game. “We could have been 3-0 after a good win on the road last week. “The fact that they don’t quit has been a positive and I know they have the talent. “We have to gel though. We know we can be a good team.” Meanwhile, the Jets women’s side continued its winning start to the state championship division season with a 80-66 victory over Waverley Falcons on Sunday. Losing start for Rupo By Tara Murray A new-look Rupertswood A-grade team suffered a first-up 10-goal loss to Romsey in the Riddell District Netball League. After holding a three-goal lead at half-time, the Redbacks went on with the job to eventually win 44-34. Hope Evans was the best of the goalers on court, shooting 29 goals for the Redbacks. For the Sharks, skipper Amy Starzer shot 21 at 84 per cent accuracy. Speaking before the game, Rupertswood coach Di McCormack said that while the club had added a couple of experienced players, it would be fielding a younger side than in previous seasons. Beck Anstey, who played several games for the Sharks last season, has moved across permanently from the Sunbury Lions. She has been joined by another former Lion, Prue Stanley, who was named at centre in the Ballarat Netball League team of the year the past three seasons. McCormack said the experience those two would bring to the line-up would be invaluable. “We have an older head in every area of the court with Prue, Beck and Amy Starzer in attack,” she said. Mid-courter Jacqui Harrington has also joined the team. She is a training partner with VNL side Monash University Storm. Five members of the A-grade side are still eligible to play under-19s – Ailish McCormack and Emily Ktona, who played in the top side last year – have been joined in the team by Lara and Holly Keating, and Hayley Matthews. McCormack said Lara Keating had come along in leaps and bounds in the off season. She’s been named in the Monash University Storm Victorian Netball League under-19 team. Keating is a training partner for the same squad. Jess Dominko and Lucy Batina, who have both previously been in the A-grade team, have returned to the top side. “Lucy was sick last season and we put her in C grade,” McCormack said. “Jess has worked really hard in B grade. She gets along really well with Beck and they play well together.” McCormack said Amy Starzer, who will captain the side, had taken the next step during the off season. “She has been fantastic,” she said. “A pre-season with Boroondara has done her really well. She’s shown great leadership and really helped out with the coaching.” McCormack said that despite the line-up changes, she was confident of success this season. The Sharks have finished in the top three in the past three seasons, but haven’t progressed past the preliminary finals. “We’ve won three B-grade flags in a row and haven’t lost a game in under-19s and won the C-grade premiership last year,” she said.

ROD’S VERDICT
his is a very comfortable, well-appointed SUV with excellent fit and finish, but the dash, instruments and interior are overly masculine. There’s toughness here, an attitude that you don’t find in the calmer, more welcoming lines of a Mercedes or a BMW. I guess I’d get used to it but I’d always be aware of it. What I most liked was the third row of seats that unfold and retract with the touch of a button. They’re definitely kid-sized but for kids they’re comfortable and access is pretty good. When folded away they make for a fairly high cargo floor but it’s a generous space and the cargo door is electronically operated. The navigation is by Google and operates with imagery from Google Earth, so if you like looking at rooftops as you drive by it’s a treat. I guess there’s a setting for normal mapping but I couldn’t find it. The reversing camera and surround view parking cameras (optional at $1300) are among the best I’ve used and make reverse parking far easier despite the size of the car.

orth of the Tropic of Capricorn you’ll note how many four-wheel-drives carry two spare wheels. They do this out of bitter experience. So it amazes me how many 4WDs are supplied with no spare at all. This one gets a tyre repair kit. Good luck with that when you limp into the Rabbit Flat roadhouse to find that it closed years ago. Otherwise, the Q7 is a good thing. It feels much smaller than it is, but you’re always aware that it’s heavy, especially with mild body roll through tight corners. Despite this it clings like a limpet and always feels secure. The steering is beautifully weighted and the controls are comprehensive. You can adjust the suspension through several settings, but for long trips through the bush the comfort setting is terrific giving a superb ride. You can have the same turbo diesel motor tuned to 200 kilowatts for an extra $8000, or $200 a kilowatt. I don’t think it’s worth it because, off the mark or overtaking, this one delivers in spades and is beautifully matched to the eight-speed auto.
