There must be something in the water at Ljubica Bosevska’s house – her tomatoes are growing like there’s no tomorrow. The Sunbury resident (pictured) plucked these beauties from her tomato plant last week, and each of them weighed in at just under a kilogram. This year’s crop pipped last year’s by about 300 grams, Ms Bosevska says. She says there’s no great secret to her gardening, but credits divine intervention for her fruitful life. “I don’t do anything to them, I just put the plant in the ground and water it, and it takes off,” she said. “I guess the weather has been crazy. “When I pick them, I give them away to the people in my church. People always gather around and ask who helps me, and I tell them: ‘I live with myself and God, and he provides me with everything I need’.” Esther Lauaki
‘Forgotten baby’ death link The mother of a 22-month-old Kyneton toddler found dead in the family car was “severely sleep deprived” and suffering from “forgotten baby syndrome” at the time, a coroner has been told. An inquest into the death of Noah Zunde last week heard that the young boy succumbed to heatstroke in February, 2015 after being left in the car all day. His mother Romy Zunde made the devastating discovery in the back seat of her car minutes after she arrived at a Kyneton childcare centre to pick him up. The Victorian Coroners Court was told Ms Zunde believed she had dropped Noah at childcare that morning.
Associate Professor of Psychology Matthew Mundy, who tended a medical report to the coroner, told the hearing he believed the mother’s actions were the result of a catastrophic memory lapse. “If you are capable of forgetting to post a letter, you are capable of forgetting to take your baby out of the car,” he said. “When you forget something simple like forgetting to post a letter … you assume that that’s a simple failure of short-term memory, and it absolutely is. “Your memory is limited – it’s limited in the number of things you can remember at any given time and it’s limited in the amount of time you can remember a thing for.”
Ms Zunde was severely sleep-deprived, stressed, dealing with a change in routine and suffering from a phenomenon dubbed “forgotten baby syndrome”, Professor Mundy said. The inquest was told that in the week leading up to the death, Ms Zunde hadn’t been able to sleep well due to a suspected case of gastroenteritis. Her daughter later fell sick, too. Professor Mundy said that sleep was required for memories to be consolidated, so the deprivation would have decreased the likelihood that Ms Zunde remembered her child was in the car. “She was overwhelmed with confusion and
thought about several alternatives where she could have left Noah.” During the inquest, coroner Sara Hinchey was told of new technology being used in some cars in the United States to alert parents to the presence of a baby in the backseat when they turn off the ignition. The device emits a sound and visual cue to remind parents to remove their child from the vehicle. Professor Mundy recommended similar technology be introduced to new cars in Victoria. The inquest will continue at a later date.

Autumn splash no fun for some By Esther Lauaki It’s crunch time over autumn leaves on Mount Macedon. As the council moves in to slow down flocks of visitors taking in the season’s glorious colours, battlelines are being drawn between those who love the April pageant and those who don’t. One local has even claimed residents are leaving the area in droves to flee unruly tourists. But big-end-of-town interests claim the
relatively recent autumn phenomena is boosting the local economy and creating jobs. Macedon Ranges’ mayor Jennifer Anderson put the visitor influx down to the power of social media, coupled with tour operators offering special autumn packages. Cr Anderson said the council’s recently formed Autumn Festival committee will co-ordinate garden openings at some of the Mount’s historic hill-top estates. Autumn Leaves committee member Jamie Byron said open garden operators donated
money to the community, while tourism boosted the economy and created jobs. He said the key to the festival’s success was managing parking and other public amenities. But residents claim new measures to control traffic flow and provide rest facilities won’t be enough to stop tourists from “loving the area to death”. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said people are being ignored in favour of commercial interests, with the Mount in the midst of a
tourist “invasion”. Roads became gridlocked and people parked vehicles over driveways in the final weeks of autumn last year, she said. One resident, who asked not to be named, told Star Weekly disputes over the impact of tourists were becoming a weekly occurrence. “This Autumn Leaves festival committee is largely comprised of people who stand to make the most money out of this tourism,” she said. “It should not be up to the community and ratepayers to provide toilets for them to make money.”
Calder carnage closes freeway A crash that killed a Romsey father of six and another that left a man seriously injured by the roadside made for a horror week on the Calder freeway. Police allege a truck driver, whose “erratic” driving led to a horror five-car collision that killed Kari-Pekka Maunus, and closed the freeway earlier this month, was on a suicide mission and under the influence of the drug “ice”. A Melbourne Magistrates Court was told a blood sample taken after the collision revealed the driver, Michael Templeton, had used methamphetamine. Mr Maunus, a 49-year-old boilermaker, was on his way to work when a truck ran over the top of his ute about 6.30am on March 16. Templeton had been swerving his freight tip truck erratically between inbound lanes near Kings Road in Taylors Lakes, a police report stated. He was charged with culpable driving causing death on March 18 and was remanded to reappear on June 27. Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses to a hit-and-run involving a truck and a man near Woodend on March 15. Investigators were told a car was stopped on the side of the Calder Freeway between Bawden and Quarry roads about 1.55pm as the driver filled up the petrol tank. A small truck clipped the man then continued driving south. It is not known whether the truck driver was aware his truck had struck the man. Public honour for Lancefield private The name of one of Lancefield’s fallen from World War I will be added to the town’s memorial in time for his family to honour him on Anzac Day. Private Herbert Golding fought with the 23rd Battalion at Lone Pine in August, 1915. They were among the last troops to evacuate Gallipoli, on December 20 that year. The battalion transferred to France in March, 1916, suffering heavy casualties around Pozieres. Private Golding was admitted to hospital with arm, thigh and hip wounds, later dying from his injuries.
His great niece, Jay Brooks, told Star Weekly that his name was not included on the Lancefield memorial when it was constructed because his widow, Annie Florence, left the area with their two sons after his enlistment. Ms Brooks, along with more than a dozen family members and direct descendants, will witness that omission being rectified next month when Private Golding’s name is added to the memorial. “Our family treasures the letters he wrote from the front line, reassuring us that he was well, and in good spirits and was strong in the
Christian faith which had led him to enlist,” she said. “To see his name added to the memorial will be a very special day for our family to remember him.” Ms Brooks said that before he enlisted, Private Golding was a journalist. He worked with a number of Victorian and South Australian newspapers and became the proprietor of the Lancefield Mercury in 1913. The newspaper was published and printed at a High Street building now a costume hire shop.

The latest Kyneton Museum exhibition is set to pull at the heartstrings of Jane Austen era admirers. Old murder in spotlight
Stations get more parks
By Tammy Mills - The Age It was a rare psychopathic rage that drove Renita Brunton’s killer to stab her 106 times. It was November 5, 1993, in the Link Arcade in Sunbury and Mrs Brunton was attacked in the kitchen at the back of her second-hand clothing shop about 1pm. She was stabbed all over her body. If she screamed, no one heard it. There was someone who fitted the bill as the killer in this cold case; serial murderer and rapist Peter Dupas. But detectives re-investigating the 31-year-old’s death say it may not have been him, revealing Dupas had provided police with an alibi. The case was explored last week as part of television series Million Dollar Cold Case; in which Victoria Police’s cold case crew are opening files to 10 unsolved murders. Each carry million dollar rewards in the hope it will prompt someone who has information to talk to police. “There is always someone who knows,” Detective Sergeant Paul Rowe told Channel 77. In the case of Mrs Brunton – a determined, confident 31-year-old mother-of-one – investigators started with those closest to her. Her husband Robert Brunton, who she had married only five months earlier, was questioned and cleared, as were her family, ex-husband and friends. And then the web spread. The original investigator, Superintendent Bernie Jackson, said an acquaintance whose advances were rejected became a person of interest and he matched the description of a man seen near the shop in the days before. “He was fairly blase, I would say, not a lot of emotion at all,” Superintendent Jackson said of that man’s interview.

A witness also told police she’d seen Mrs Brunton arguing with a man inside the shop on the day before her death. But it was information from Mrs Brunton’s friend Annette Davey that widened the net further. Ms Davey told Channel 7 that Mrs Brunton, who had a passion for helping people, had been informally counselling people at the back of her shop, and she was due to meet a man with a

violent sexual history on the day of her murder. Ms Davey said her friend wanted this person to know the damage sexual assault causes survivors. More than 300 new carparking spaces will be built across Macedon, Clarkefield and Woodend stations in an effort to make it quicker and easier to drive to the station and catch the train. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the state government will deliver up to 110 new carparks at Macedon station, 50 new spaces at Clarkefield station, and seal and mark 200 spaces at Woodend as well as 40 new spaces at Gisborne and 100 new spaces at Kyneton. New electronic pedestrian crossings will also be installed at station crossings in Kyneton and Clarkefield, as part of the Safer Country Crossings program. “These new spaces will reduce the daily scramble to get a park and make it quicker, easier and safer to drive to the station and catch the train,” Ms Thomas said. “We have listened to locals and now we’re delivering the day-to-day upgrades that will make a real difference for people across the Macedon Ranges – better connecting them to work, education and each other.” The carpark upgrades are part of the government’s road and rail minor works program that aims to increase carparks, build more comfortable waiting areas and better passenger information at train stations across rural and regional Victoria. Show spreads its wings By Esther Lauaki High flyers will loop and roll while landlubbers will be urged to spread their wings when Kyneton Airshow takes to the skies for its 50th year. The show, on April 23, will include aeronautic displays by vintage and rare aircraft – with a big drawcard being a RAAF Roulettes’ flyover. The show, postponed because of extreme spring rains last October, is a major fundraiser for Kyneton and Woodend Rotary clubs, and a major spectacle for the town known as Queen of the Uplands, and its municipal airport. Kyneton Rotarian and pilot David Bibby said the airshow promises to be a great day out. “This is a significant event for the Kyneton Aero Club, the Macedon Ranges and for the history of aviation in Australia,” he said. “People from all over Australia will be visiting the Macedon Ranges and joining with the locals for this fun day of family entertainment and celebration. “And the proceeds get put back into the community.” The air show’s Spread Your Wings theme aims to entice visitors into a possible career in aviation, Mr Bibby said. Gates open at 8.30am, flying displays start from 10.30am. There will be entertainment for children, a vintage car display and food vendors. Old school not lost Macedon Ranges council is keen to keep the soon-to-be vacated Kyneton Primary School in community hands. Councillors this month agreed to look at setting aside $10,000 in the upcoming 2017-18 draft budget to fund a master plan for the school’s revamp. Mayor Jennifer Anderson told Star Weekly the council itself has no plans to tender for the site “at this point”, but wants to ensure the buildings are retained for community use. She raised concerns about maintenance costs if the council was to acquire it. “I think the idea of the school site going back to the community is great, but I don’t think we’ve explored other possibilities of the cost,” she said. “There may be a philanthropic path, where someone can buy the site from the state government and still achieve for us a community outcome, which means it’s not a council ongoing liability.” A group of artisans and tradespeople has put forward a proposal for a specialist school for rare and forgotten trades within the historic Baynton Street buildings – but it can only go ahead if the state government and the council don’t want the site. Macedon Ranges residents could be cultivating nature strip fruit and vegie patches if a new policy gets off the ground. The council is developing a framework for a nature strip policy that would allow residents to develop their nature strips as community gardens. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said nature strips presented a unique opportunity for the community. The idea sprouted after she attended an agricultural conference in Melbourne last year. “Councils throughout Australia are starting to do some of this work,” Cr Anderson said. “Some councils have very strict policies and some have completely thrown the rule book out the window and said that as long as people keep to a certain set of criteria, they can do what they like. “We need guidelines around what you can and can’t do … so many people want to do it and we want to help them to do it instead of restrict them. We want to get things started so that we can talk to the community and get them to tell us what they want.” Cr Anderson said important issues to consider in the use of nature strips included technical considerations such as road, cycling and pedestrian safety, as well as public liability and maintaining access to utility services. “The social implications of it, the aesthetics of it and the use of water for the gardens instead of into the drains are just some of the advantages.”
The council will seek public feedback on the plan. However, MountMacedon Horticultural Society president Stephen Ryan has some reservations about the idea of growing food near footpaths. “My concern … is that people have a very good chance of picking up all sorts of nasty pollutants,” Mr Ryan said.

“Fair enough if you live in the country where only five cars a day pass by, but in the town centre, I think it’s inappropriate. “There are cars going past, dogs, cat and animals pooping. “I don’t mind fruit trees because they are above everything, but I certainly wouldn’t want to be pulling carrots or picking parsley off a nature strip. It’s a matter of picking the right places.” He said growing trees, plants and shrubs on nature strips should be encouraged. “A well-grown and maintained nature strip is pleasing for any passer by,” he said. “It’s helping to beautify any area and I don’t see why people shouldn’t be allowed to do so.” Cr Anderson will attend the Macedon Ranges horticulture society’s next meeting at 8pm on Tuesday, April 4, at Mt Macedon Golf Club to discuss the idea. The meeting is open to the public.

Drum to beat at Creek Riddells Creek music fans – prepare to rock out. South Australian-based duo Lily and the Drum will perform in Riddell’s Creek next month where they filmed their most recent film clip.The performance is to promote their new album Buried in Blue. Singer and guitarist Lily Higgins and percussionist John Yacka, who also plays harmonica and sings backing vocals, are an alternative blues and rock band that debuted in 2012 with Nobody Just Like Me. Since then, they have released two more albums, with their latest making the top 20 on the Australian roots and blues charts. Higgins says the group is excited to perform at Riddell’s Creek for the first time and thought it was only fitting to return to the area.
She says that when they decided to embark on the project they had no idea how much their lives would change. “Five years ago we performed six songs at a singer songwriter’s night in Adelaide, unsure of how the audience would react to our songs and stripped back approach,” Higgins says. “Now we have more than 500 performances behind us, three top 25 albums in national charts, and over 180,000 kilometers clocked up through four states. “We’re travelling musical troubadours and we are loving it.” Lily and the Drum will perform at Riddell’s Creek Hotel on Saturday April 1 from 7pm to 10.30pm. www.lilyandthedrum.com.au

MY PLACE Hector Bugeja has been going out to bat for the best interests of the Sunbury community for more than 40 years. He speaks with Esther Lauaki about his love of the town and its people, and a more personal battle he now faces. What’s your connection to Sunbury?
We are now making real progress.

What do you like to do in your down time?
What involvement have you had in the Sunbury community over the years?
The things my wife (Sue) and I like doing are catching up with friends over coffee, gardening, and renovating ours and other people’s houses.
One of your passions is cycling, and your involvement with the Sunbury Bicycle Users Group … After recently retiring in 2013 after a 40-year career as a well regarded and respected state public servant, I have continued arguing in support of the Sunbury community. Over the past three years, I have campaigned for the completion of the Vineyard Road shared pathway way over the Calder highway. After the death of a cyclist in this area, I have been passionate about this. I feel we have now knocked down VicRoads’ internal barriers to this project.
You were diagnosed with Parkinsons just last year and are now using some innovative technology to manage your condition. Can you explain what you’re doing? Three years ago, I underwent an operation known as deep brain stimulation … to treat a variety of disabling neurological symptoms – most commonly the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremor, rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement, and walking problems. I use a device called the Parkinson kinetigraph watch, which monitors my body and another device called ‘ambulosono’, which trains me to walk with larger and consistent steps, and do so repetitively on a daily basis. What do you love most about living in Sunbury? The thing I really like and appreciate about Sunbury is the people. I feel very fortunate that we have many good friends and neighbours. Where are your favorite Sunbury places? I like the shopping precinct in the centre of town. The Mount Holden walk is beautiful and the wetlands are great. Sunbury is the best kept secret in the metropolitan area.

I’ve been very active in the community and involved in many groups and campaigns, including kindergarten committees, school councils and sporting clubs. I still enjoy a game of tennis at the Mount Carmel tennis club, and I’m an active cyclist with the Diggers Rest bicycle group. I was a previous active and long-serving secretary of the residents’ association, and was a shire of Bulla councillor for eight years. My major achievements in that role were the Sunbury Aquatic centre and [the] introduction of municipal recycling collection system, and as chairman of the council’s forward planning committee.

The older folks, by any other name Who knew? Donald Trump is called Mr Trump by his grandchildren – or so the pundits claim. And here’s you, thinking that Gum-gum from your own grandies was ‘a bit different”. When we have a peek into the world of celebrity grandparent names, we find a smorgasbord of the common through to the downright peculiar. Take, for example, the late Joan Rivers whose grandkids called her either Grammy (so far, so normal) or Nanna New Face. Could that be Joan’s “first defence is attack” choice, or did the kids get creatively concise? Lionel Richie, of course, went for “down with the kids” cool. G-Pa is his grandfatherly moniker, maybe in readiness for a seamless transition to: “Gee Pa, can I have a Ferrari?” Goldie Hawn’s son’s kids call her Glam-ma. Now tell me that doesn’t pile upkeep-pressure on her, when she secretly wants to live in uggies? Goldie’s daughter’s kids, meanwhile, go with the friendly, chirpy Gogo.
“Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman..” His grandkids call him Peach, but has Martin Sheen scored that name for his smooth cheeks, his fruitiness – or is he just a real peach of a man in their eyes, where it counts most? Debbie Reynolds went by Abba Dabba, perhaps referencing her Wilma Rubble-type looks. Yeah, that’s a stretch, but Abba Dabba does have a certain sweetness, just like her 1968 movie How Sweet It Is! Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman who, laudably, doesn’t mind any bogan tag. And Sally Field, she of the blindingly humble Oscar thank-you moment, is Granny – no grandstanding for her. The no-nonsense Martha Stewart has a similarly no-nonsense grandmotherly name: Martha. Maybe she ran out of fanciness after plating up 40 million dishes and tying 10 million bows; she was just simplifying things. She wanted “Wolf”, but Blythe Danner wound up being called Lalo, which could be construed as good advice (lay low) from her grandkids who must’ve known that Wolf is genuinely weird. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a new cafe that hits the spot In the years that Consider The Sauce has been running, I’ve come across quite a few people of Maltese background. Invariably, I’ve always had the same question: Why aren’t there one or more Maltese eateries in the west? I need ask that question no longer, as now there’s Cafe Verdala. This eatery is located in the rooms of the Maltese Cultural Centre in Albion. This kind of community-based food and set-up are just the sort of things that get CTS truly excited! We start with the tasting platter called platt Verdala ghal-tnejn ($22.50 for two). This is simple, wholesome fare – Maltese bread, broad-bean dip, capers, tuna, olives, caponata, olive oil, the dry Maltese crackers known as galetti and mini versions of the open pies known as qassatat (these ones filled with sausage). The biggest surprise here is the tomato paste. I’d heard and read about the seemingly miraculous Three Hills brand Kunserva tomato paste and how Maltese folks simply love it, as is, slathered on bread. No wonder! It really is good – in no way bitter, quite sweet and very yummy. If Kunserva can be seen as something of a Maltese national food, pastizzi are right up there, too. Here they’re served, with a variety of fillings, alongside more, full-size qassatat. Another adored Maltese food? Rabbit. We really enjoy the pork-and-rabbit pastizzi. We all go our own way with the main dishes,

The ravioli are stuffed with a simple mix of seasoned ricotta and served with Kunserva cooked lightly with olive oil and (I think) garlic. Maltese pizzas are called gozitan ftria – they’re a good deal deeper and heftier than their Italian cousins. The potato and ricotta pie ($15) is deep and substantial. Luckily, we’ve left room for some of the famed Maltese desserts. The Maltese take on bread pudding – pudina tal-hobz ($6 per serve), has a chocolate-andcherry thing going on. Imqaret are extremely fine deep-fried date slices ($6 for three). And there’s a big slice of the Maltese carnival cake called prinjolata. It defies its pinkish colouring by tasting quite like a rich fruit cake or Christmas cake. SPORT Bowden’s bowling feat lands top honour Lancefield’s bowling star Matthew Bowden was named man of the match in the B-grade grand final. The Tigers, who were playing in E-grade in 2012-13, have won three premierships in four different grades in the past five years. Next season the Tigers will play in the McIntyre Cup for the first time after an outright victory against Wallan in the B-grade grand final on Saturday. Bowden, who took 10 wickets, including seven in the first innings, said the closeness of the side was vital to the success. “We’re a really tight-knit group,” he said. “Most of us are locals and have been through the grades together and are really good mates. It does help when you’re on the field.” Nine out of the 11 players have played most,
if not all their cricket at Lancefield. Skipper Luke Barker came in three seasons ago from Woodend, while Glenn Warner came across this season, also from Woodend. Jarryd McGill and Chris Collins have played in four grand finals over the five year period. Nathan and Luke Malone, along with Bowden, have played in three grand finals. Bowden said he didn’t think the side’s rise could have come without the arrival of Barker. Bowden, who has taken out man of the match in both the B-grade and C-grade premierships, and was B-grade bowler of the year with 45 wickets for the season, was more than happy to focus on the team achievements. “I was just happy to get the grand final win,” he said. “I had a good day but everyone else played their role too. Individual awards
don’t mean anything, team success is more important.” Bowden said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing in the McIntyre Cup next season. “It’ll be pretty good and we’re looking forward to see how we will go in it,” he said. “A few years ago no one thought it would happen The team now believes we can match it with anyone.” Tara Murray

Tigers rise continues By Tara Murray Lancefield’s third flag in five seasons has seen it rise from a lowly ranked Gisborne and District Cricket Association side to a McIntyre Cup team. In 2012-13, the Tigers were playing in the E-grade competition and dreams of playing in the McIntyre Cup weren’t even considered. The side managed to take out the E-grade premiership that season and it was followed by a D-grade grand final the next season and the C-grade premiership in 2014-15. Playing in the B-grade competition last season, the Tigers were happy just to stay in that grade. This season’s challenge was to win a final. They exceeded that, claiming a sensational grand final victory against Wallan on Saturday.
The Tigers had first innings points in the bag last Sunday and were looking to pile on the runs on Saturday. They were bowled out for 207 at tea, with a 299-run lead and with about 40 overs to bowl. Luke Malone top scored with 58. The Magpies came out attacking, but with that wickets fell – the Tigers bowling them out for 180 in 29.5 overs. Tigers captain-coach Luke Barker said they had been reasonably confident of being able to secure the outright victory with the total they had set Wallan. He said they hadn’t batted well earlier in the day, but had still managed to put 200 on the board. “They were always going to fight it right out to the end,” he said. “We knew we had to get three or four wickets early.

“With 20 overs to go they still had a sniff until we got a couple of wickets. “We took some great chances and fielded really well. Everyone played their role which was pleasing.” Malone took five wickets in the second innings, while Matthew Bowden took three wickets to go with his seven from the first innings. The two bowled unchanged in the second innings. Bowden was named man of the match. Barker, in his third season as coach, said no one could imagine the rise of the club over the past five seasons. The club will now play in the top grade for the first time since 1994-95. “They’ve always had the talent and I don’t think they believed how good they are,” he said.
There was mixed fortunes for Calder Cannons’ two sides on Friday night. The Cannons boys suffered a big loss in their season opener against Eastern Ranges 15.16 (106)-7-10 (52). Debutantes Curtis Taylor kicked three goals and was named the side’s best. Defender Mason Fletcher was also a standout for the Cannons. The Cannons girls side won their second straight game with a hard fought win over the Ranges 9.4 (58)-7.5 (47). Sarah Dargan and Madison Prespakis were the best in the win. Cup King does it again for Gisborne in the grand final For a second successive season, Jay King’s batting has taken the spotlight away from his bowling in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup grand final. Last season, barely able to walk due to shin stress fractures, he made four vital, unbeaten runs to help Gisborne force a tie, which was enough for the Dragons to claim the premiership. This year he produced his best score of the season, and an equal career-high of 51 not out, to help his side bat out its 120 overs and post a score of 9-307. He then backed it up with his bowling, taking three wickets to help the Dragons secure back-to-back titles. It was no surprise when the umpires named King the Gary Sanders Medal winner for best on ground. To put King’s 51 into perspective, all that is needed is a look at his performances with the bat this season. Before the grand final, he had hit 29 runs in nine innings. In his past two
innings, he had hit three not out, and before that he had three ducks in four games. Despite his lean form with the bat, King was promoted one spot up the order by coach Simon Harman for the grand final. Speaking after his man of the match performance, King said he didn’t know where his batting performance had come from. “I think I doubled my season’s score – it was good to do it when it matters,” he said. “I tried to concentrate and things went my way – once you get in it comes a lot easier. “I had to try and knuckle down a bit and bat some time and take the sting out of it. It was good.” King said there was a weird feeling once the Dragons got the final wicket to seal the win after last season’s dramatic ending. “We knew it was going to happen – it was a matter of when,” he said. “It was a little different to the last one.” King, who has played in two premierships in his two years at the club, after moving across
from Rupertswood, said it was the closeness of the Dragons players that had propelled them to successive wins. King finished the year with 39 wickets, putting him in the top 10 in the McIntyre Cup. “I’ve never played in a side with 11 people who get on as much as we do,” he said. “All 11 of us are at training Tuesdays and Thursdays and always together on a Saturday night. “It’s the buy-in from everyone and the belief – no matter what we’re all in it for the right reasons.” Tara Murray

Dragons at their peak By Tara Murray Gisborne saved the best for last to claim back-to-back Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup titles at the weekend. The Dragons weren’t quite perfect in the grand final, but they went close to it, defeating Sunbury by 164 runs. After batting their whole 120 overs for 9-307, the Dragons had Sunbury in trouble at 5-51 at stumps on day two. After a couple of missed chances on Saturday’s final day, the Dragons finished the job, bowling Sunbury out for 143. Dragons playing coach Simon Harman, who got the match-winning run-out, said he couldn’t have asked for any more from the side across the three days. “We didn’t want to get complacent, but we knew we were in a really good position due to some exceptional cricket on Saturday and Sunday last week,” he said. “We were in trouble early last week but were pretty resilient, with a few guys cashing in on Sunday. “I think Sunday last week flexed our muscles and showed we were the best side in the competition. We probably didn’t start brilliantly today, but we persisted and got the result we wanted.” Harman said the win, and the way the game was played, showed the all-round strength and batting depth of the side. “It’s been a strength of ours through the year, even though it’s been inconsistent – when we bat well, we are very, very good. “With the ball we were relentless with our pressure and took our chances.” This was the 16th McIntyre/A-grade premiership for the Dragons and the sixth time they’ve claimed the flag back-to-back. “Usually there’s a big turnover of players every time you win one,” Harman said. “You tend to lose guys and rely on recruiting players, and sometimes you drop a little bit. “The guys who went out [after last season] were replaced with similar cricketers and we gave ourselves the best chance of success. “It was pretty seamless – we were lucky to pick up some good players, as well as the two young guys [Roby Lane and Riley Vernon] that came in and played the house down.” As for which of the two premierships he thought was the better, Harman said they were both special. Last season’s title came courtesy of a tied grand final. “It was satisfying both times – if you can win by 150 runs you’ll take that every day of the week,” he said of this year’s decider. Harman, who has stood down as coach after two seasons in charge, said he would definitely play on next season.

Sunbury back in a bad place It’s a feeling Sunbury knows – finishing on the wrong end of a Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final. But it doesn’t get any easier. On Saturday, Sunbury lost its fourth grand final in five seasons, unable to match a strong Gisborne team in the decider. Not for the first time in season 2016-17, Sunbury was left to rue a poor batting performance with the game all but over after the first two days of the three-day grand final. After the Dragons posted 9-307, Sunbury was looking for a good start. Instead, it was 5-51 at stumps on day two. Sunbury managed to make 30 runs on day three before losing a wicket, but when it lost 3-5 the small chance of victory was snuffed out. A fighting last-wicket partnership between Apo Stephen and Jamie Baude pushed the score to 143 before a run-out ended the match. Stephen top-scored with 41 not out. Sunbury playing coach Justin Nelson was disappointed with the result. “There’s a saying that strange things happen in grand finals and I guess we were hoping for that, but we really needed a solid start and we didn’t get that,” he said. “We were on the back foot all day. “Those [batting] collapses have been our problem all year. We’ve not been able to consistently put together big partnerships and it’s been a massive downfall for us. “It’s not a great habit to get into, losing grand finals.” Nelson said that while it was pleasing to see the last-wicket partnership fight, Sunbury needed more from the top order. He said they would look to add some more batting next season. “The top order let them down,” he said. “We definitely need some batsmen that can dig in – whether we find that from within the ranks or look outside, I don’t know.” Nelson, who was in his first season as coach, said the club would let the result sink in before sitting down and looking at the positives of the season, much of which the side spent on top of the ladder. es, the Baleno is cheap but it’s certainly not nasty; the more you drive it, the more endearing it becomes. Use the gears and the performance is willing and eager, and using the gears is easy with a light, fast shift and an easy clutch, all making the car fun. I was impressed by the seating, comfortable and supportive in front and there’s surprising legroom in the rear given the compact external dimensions. However, the seating back there is a flat bench that I suspect will get tedious pretty fast. What most impressed me was the inclusion of navigation, making the Baleno a standout bargain in terms of equipment. The touch controls of the radio, though, are clumsy and the sound quality isn’t great. The interior reflects the bargain price but the fit and finish is good. You’ll notice the rise in cabin noise as you hit 80km/h and by 110 it’s enough to drown out the radio. But it’s built for the city and in this environment it’s quick, fun and dead easy to park, made easier by a generous back-up camera.

uzukis have one extremely endearing quality – they’re great value. Late last year there was a new Vitara that set the benchmark for small SUVs and now the new Baleno is doing the same for small cars. For $17k you get a bright, perky engine, an easy and fast manual gearbox and a lot of good stuff in the cabin, including Bluetooth, auto headlights, cruise and, yep, satellite navigation. It has a usable rear seat and a deep and practical boot. OK, it’s a bit noisy at cruising speed and driving at more than 110km/h requires concentration. It’s also susceptible to cross winds and, like most small, light cars it rides pretty hard. But the handling is acceptable and will improve with better tyres, the motor is willing and acceleration is more than adequate. And the fuel economy is terrific – by our figures you’ll get more than 500 kilometres from the 37-litre tank. As city runabouts go, it’s the best you’re likely to find. The nice bonus is it looks like it costs more than it does.
