A big night in Sunbury Lachlan was the perfect New Year gift for the Gray-Gazzola family. The Sunbury boy was born at 3.23pm on January 1 at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital – the hospital’s first baby for the year. Mum Jessica Gray and dad Pete Gazzola generally spend New Years eve at Yendon, where their families live, but decided to have a “quiet one in” to welcome 2017. It was a good thing they did – Ms Gray’s waters broke just before midnight and she was rushed to hospital as the fireworks were being lit. Her contractions started at 10am on January 1 and the “perfect little boy” was born that afternoon. “I was only pushing for 30 minutes so it was very quick,” the first-time mum said. “It was quite a magical moment.” Ms Gray says she’s already looking forward to a second child, but Pete is “a bit traumatised” by it all. But Mr Gazzola says he’s been handling fatherhood well. “I think we’re very lucky – everything is going by the book,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Jess. “I went straight into changing the nappies and doing everything I can to look after the house. Corella cull challenged By Esther Lauaki Wildlife campaigners are banding together in an attempt to stop the cull of 100 corellas at the nearby Kilmore Golf Club. Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network spokesman Marcus Ward rallied members to contact the club, which was permitted to begin shooting the birds last week, to ask them to consider more humane options. “Kilmore Golf Club has sadly got a permit to kill 100 corellas for damaging the greens, and shooting began [last week],” Mr Ward said. “We are asking (people) to please take the time to ring them and ask them to stop … to

use non lethal methods like many other places, which have proven highly effective. “At the moment, these birds have dependent young, so there is a very high chance of orphaning,” Mr Ward said. “Alternatives are a number of bird-scaring devices, ground sprays and sound guns.” The environment, land, water and planning department has issued two permits to the club since 2015 to help get corellas under control. Acting environment and natural resources manager Jane Roots said DELWP had been working with Kilmore Golf Club since 2015 on ways to minimise damage the birds cause. “A combination of tactics are being used,

including a (cull) permit issued by authorised officers,” Ms Roots said. “During summer, corellas love to feed on the ground on lush kikuyu grass and also frequent River Red gum environments where nest tree hollows are common. “However, their numbers fluctuate depending on conditions, food availability and the season,” she said. “It is recognised that occasionally, when other deterrents become ineffective, shooting of some birds may be necessary.” Wildlife advocate Elise Lehmann-Kay started an online petition on Change.org and believes the department should be encouraging more

non-lethal methods of wildlife management. “The Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act of 1988 is supposed to protect our native animals from inhumane killing such as this, yet DWELP have issued the Kilmore Golf Club with a permit to kill corellas on their golf course, for the second year in a row” Ms Lehmann-Kay said. “If the Kilmore Golf Club are allowed to annually apply for permits to kill these native corellas, and annually have these permits granted, and are allowed to continue to shoot at flocks, during a time when there are dependent young present, disregarding common laws … this opens the door for corellas and other native animals to be killed (by) humankind.”

Grass sparks fire season nerves By Esther Lauaki Fourteen fire trucks and a helicopter took two hours to bring a 10-hectare grass fire under control at a Riddells Creek property last week. CFA crews from Riddells Creek, Gisborne and Sunbury were called to the fire at McDonalds Lane after a tractor sparked flames while slashing grass on the property. Fire crews were later joined by Macedon, Mount Macedon, Clarkefield, Bolinda-Monegeetta, Bullengarook, Romsey, Wildwood and Hesket-Kerrie brigades.

Riddells Creek Fire Brigade Captain Tom Morley said using a helicopter had been critical in preventing the spread of the fire. “As the fire spread to a nearby gully, it became difficult for firefighters to attack the fire and this is where the helicopter was instrumental,” Mr Morley said. “These smaller four-wheel drive fire trucks also played a critical role in stopping the spread of the fire.” Meanwhile, the burn-off of a 100 square metre pile of branches and leaves on the Clyde Track at Mount Macedon earlier this month

sparked concerns about communication. Forest Fire Management Victoria issued a public advisory notice on the Calder freeway about smoke being visible in the area. But the Country Fire Authority’s Mt Macedon group officer Ian Hay said he was not told, and raised his concern over what he said was “a breakdown in communication” after he heard about the burn-off from a member of the public. But Mt Macedon CFA captain Jim Darby said the brigade had been informed about the burn-off. He said the communication

breakdown was within the Mt Macedon fire brigades group – the body that oversees local brigades in the Macedon Ranges area. “Because of the late time in the season (to burn off), the decision would have been made late Monday or Tuesday, but word got to us,” Mr Darby said. Forest Fire Management Victoria Midlands district manager Jasmine Filmer said telephone contact had been made with the CFA district 2 duty officer on Monday to advise of the intended burn-off, along with a pager message to Macedon and Kyneton brigade members.

Charities are bracing for a flood of families reaching out for help with back-to-school essentials as they struggle with the escalating costs of education. Families and friends with loved ones caught up in drugs and alcohol addiction are often the ones who need support as well. Sunbury Community Health is hosting two free support group programs, which start this month, helping those who help others struggling with addiction. Program facilitator Tracey Alder said the six-week Action Recovery Course starts up again from January 30 at the centre, with a focus on understanding drug and alcohol use. “It provides you with knowledge and skills to better understand addiction,” Ms Alder said. “It explores ways of improving your relationships and offers techniques to cope with anxiety and stress. “(The course) covers topics such as boundaries, guilt, worry, communication, acceptance, and includes a comprehensive workbook of strategies to support change for families.” Sunbury Support Group also runs an ongoing program that meets monthly. Ms Alder said the support group’s program focuses on the family wellbeing, learning about addiction and addictive behaviours, providing strategies to best cope with addictive behaviours and enabling attendees to share stories and learn from each other. CFA deputy chief Garry Cook said flicking a cigarette butt into roadside grass could cause a significant fire. “Not only is this foolish, but it is a crime,” he said. “In Victoria, more than half the bushfires are deliberately lit or caused by reckless behaviour. Open door to world’s best Aspiring stars from Riddells Creek Tennis Club got the lowdown from the world’s best at the Australian Open last week. A group of 50 ANZ Tennis Hot Shots players and parents from the club were treated to a grand slam sporting experience, with complimentary tickets a reward for the club’s commitment to engaging young people to pick up a racquet and play. Riddells Creek is one of 22 clubs that run the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program. Excited by the opportunity to reward 50 of its members with centre court entree to the Australian Open, club secretary Andrew Nicholl said youngsters loved their experience.

Residents call for planning changes By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges residents are calling on their council to cut the number of planning decisions delegated to officers after a controversial permit application was upheld at Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal for 14 townhouses at Woodend. The permit to build the townhouses, between Islay House and Five Mile Creek in Woodend, first went to VCAT after Macedon Range council failed to decide on the application within the prescribed time limit.

That permit was refused by VCAT in 2014. Another permit was then issued recently by Macedon Ranges council officers under delegation, without going to a council meeting. Woodend resident Todd Langtry, who objects to the permit plan, applied for VCAT to refuse it. But VCAT gave it the green light last month. Its decision found the current proposal “responded in an acceptable manner to the concerns raised by the tribunal in the earlier decision”. Macedon Ranges Residents Association

secretary Christine Pruneau said something needs to be done to stop planning decisions being made without discussion at council meetings, then ending up at VCAT. “It’s time to remove all delegated decision-making authority from applications that have been to VCAT – this one has been

there multiple times,” Ms Pruneau said. “We can only hope that the developers don’t go ahead with the build now. “[Council] has got to get away from the idea that, if they don’t approve a permit, it will go to VCAT and we’ll end up with something worse. “There’s nothing that can be done about those townhouses now, but let’s look at changing the process that got them approved.” Council’s planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo would not be drawn on whether the council will review its current decision-making in respect to planning.

Chooks hatch a new job When Benjamin Way hatched plans two years ago to move from Melbourne to the country and farm chickens, he had no idea what he was getting into. Now his small 48-hectare Springfield operation yields about 1600 eggs a day, supplying a number of local restaurants. Now Mr Way is looking to expand into the retail sector, and is a step closer now that he’s picked up a $10,000 state government young farmer’s scholarship. Mr Way is one of 12 Young Farmers Scholarship recipients awarded this month. Agriculture minister Jaala Pulford said the funds go towards training and upskilling that helps young farmers build farming enterprises for the future. “Attracting the next generation of farmers to a life on the land is crucial to meet the growing demand for high quality, safe produce, and to improve access to key markets, such as Asia

and the Middle East,” Ms Pulford said.“Our young farmers are the future of agriculture. “Our government is getting on with giving them the support they need to increase productivity, efficiency and be the leaders of tomorrow. “Our scholarship program is part of the Andrews Labor government’s promise to attract and support the next generation of farmers. “I congratulate all the scholarship winners and look forward to seeing them take up their roles as leaders in our $13.1 billion agricultural industry.” Next year’s scholarship round opens mid-2017 and is available for farmers aged 35 or less who have been working in farm businesses for at least three days a week for the previous three months. Cut Calder carnage call on again By Esther Lauaki Road safety campaigners are renewing calls for an overpass at one of the Calder Freeway’s most awkward intersections. Calder Action Group campaigner Russell Mowatt, a New Gisborne resident and former Macedon Ranges councillor, is urging the state government to get on with a new interchange at Calder Park Drive. Mr Mowatt describes the intersection as a ‘national disgrace’, with 14 recorded crashes on the Calder Freeway between Overnewton and Holden roads between January 2012

and December 2014, five resulting in serious injuries, government data reveals. “I had an accident there with my daughter in 2012, so I can speak from experience,” Mr Mowatt said. “We were lucky to survive. “After a number of bandaid fixes, we are no better off as motorists travelling to and from work or our destinations. “It will only be a matter of time before a serious accident happens here again.” Mr Mowatt believes the government has “gone quiet” on the issue. “After significant dollars investment five years ago for the Kings Road interchange,

virtually everything has come to a screaming halt,” he said. “It’s time for changes – to expect and demand much more from our local state and federal MPs. “Labor state and federal representatives are surprisingly quiet on this important matter. “Surely they drive down the Calder Freeway at this location and on a regular basis, and have the same issues as other residents with the reduced 80km/h, vehicles lined up during peak period on the Calder Freeway shoulder turning right, and accidents still happening at the Organ Pipes Road u-turn intersection.” VicRoads did not respond before deadline.

Pedal powers the CFA A campaign to collect old, unwanted bikes, fix them up and sell at them at the Macedon CFA flea market is on its way to delivering pedal power to the masses. The Wilkinson’s Wheels initiative was started by local Phil Wilkinson, who enlisted the help of some of his mates to repair close to 300 donated bikes. “The community has truly embraced what we are doing,” Mr Wilkinson said. “The donations of bikes has been phenomenal, and we are looking forward to more coming through. “Once we get these bikes fixed up and sold off at the flea market, I’m excited to see Wilkinson Wheels continue as a community workspace for people to come together and tinker away in a men’s shed type way.” Bikes donated so far include bikes for everyone from kids through to adults. Bikes and parts are still being collected and can be

donated to Macedon Nursery and Garden Supplies on Nursery Road, Macedon, or Woodend Cycles. The bikes will be sold at the Macedon CFA flea market on February 25, with all money going to the brigade, Mr Wilkinson said. Over the last 10 years, bike sales have raised more than $6000 for the brigade, $1500 last year alone. Macedon CFA captain Greg Snart said the money has gone towards purchasing a new tanker, which has been in use for a few months. Mr Wilkinson wants more people to join in and have a go fixing up the bikes for a good cause. Gisborne: we want a pool By Esther Lauaki Gisborne families sweltering in the summer heat are campaigning for an outdoor pool. Gisborne mum Leanne Townsing started the hashtag #wewantapool on social media because she wants her teens to have somewhere to cool off when the mercury climbs. “Why can’t Gisborne have an outdoor pool?” Ms Townsing posted. “So many tiny country towns have one. What a great place for families, teens to hang out.” She told Star Weekly she’s had a wave of positive responses from people about the idea and will start a petition. “I’m just saying the increase in population in Gisborne means there are plenty of families out there who would love an outdoor pool to send their kids to … I think it brings the community together. “There is a pool in Woodend, but you have to drive there. We want to see kids outside, with a place they can walk or ride their bikes and scooters to. “It’s that experience of going to the milk bar with your mates and heading off to the pool that we’d like.” Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said she didn’t envisage an outdoor pool being built in Gisborne in the near future. Council’s outdoor pool season at Lancefield and Woodend is already in full swing with pool opening hours determined by Bureau of Meteorology temperature forecasts. Both outdoor pools are open until March 5 during the school term if the temperature is above 26 degrees. Visitors can swim for free on Australia Day this Thursday. Youngsters on a Jetstar to sports heaven Young athletes from Lancefield, Romsey and Sunbury are in with a big chance of meeting one of their sporting heroes. The Little Jetstars competition offers youngsters from athletics clubs in the northern and western regions a chance to meet Western Bulldogs’ premiership player and 2016 Norm Smith medallist Jason Johannisen. The competition celebrates good sportsmanship and dedication among participants, with five winners receiving an exclusive training session for themselves and 15 friends. Life-long Sunbury resident Peter Free was recently named as the new president of the town residents’ association. He speaks with Laura Michell.

What would you say is the biggest issue facing Sunbury? The biggest issue facing Sunbury is the lack of infrastructure … the lack of parking in the CBD, the third railway crossing, traffic management, health and a master plan for the Sunbury business district. Before we commence on the PSPs, we as a community need to fix the problems we have in the CBD. We all need the redevelopment of the former Victoria University site as further education facilities … we will need this facility for Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

What are you hoping to achieve in your time as president of the residents’ association?

How long have you lived in Sunbury? I have lived in Sunbury all my life (66 years). As a child, it was a great place to grow up. I have seen the town grow from a small village of about 900 people to what it is today. What is it that you like about living in Sunbury?

When you have lived in one place for so long, you get to know the area and the people. Sunbury is a unique place in as much as we are an island just outside the metropolitan area. Sunbury is a friendly place to live and most of the residents are very interested in what happens in Sunbury. What, if anything, would you change?

I believe one of the most important achievements would be for the residents of Sunbury having more of a say in how our town is to be developed. I invite the residents of Sunbury to raise any issues with the Sunbury Residents’ Association so we as an association can work together to make Sunbury a more enjoyable and safe place. How do you like to spend your spare time?

I like to spend my spare time researching the history of Sunbury. I have almost completed the history of St Mary’s Anglican Church, Sunbury. The church will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2017. And I am currently writing a history of Sunbury. The best use of my spare time is being involved with Why did you get involved with the Sunbury my five grandchildren, who always make my day. Residents’ Association? With the growth of Sunbury over the next 30 years or more, it needs its own leaders and decision makers. With the precinct structure plans in Lancefield Road and Sunbury South proposed by the Victoria Planning Authority, this becomes more evident.

Something to cheer about American-style cheerleading is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and dance schools around Australia are riding the wave, with allaged students flocking to get some pom-pom action. Cheerleading classes teach all the fundamentals of cheerleading, such as tumbles, cheer, chants, stunts, dance and pom-pom work. It’s all about having fun in a team, learning about sportsmanship, and using movement in an exuberant celebration. Even pre-schoolers love to perform in a cheerleading squad, and are able to form wonderful friendships doing their bit together. It was back in 1860s Britain that cheering and chanting in unison for favourite athletes at sporting events began. Soon it spread to the US, where on November 6, 1869, the first intercollegiate football game took place, marking the day the original “sis-boom-rah” cheer was first used, variations of which are still chanted today. Cheerleading was once an all-male domain, but World War II created a chance for women to step up. It wasn’t until the 1950s that cheerleading became professional and, by the 1960s, it was considered a mostly feminine pursuit. Today it’s open to anyone, but girls still dominate the sport. Cheerleading has come a long way and is now a genuine career option, with Aussie sporting events often fielding cheer squads. So if you have an active child who loves the whole dance thing, this could be the way to introduce them to discipline, to learn how to co-operate with others and to give them all the exercise they’ll need. Straw bales best for pain-free gardening As one lady in her 80s said: “It’s not the getting down to my vegie garden, it’s the getting up again that’s the hard part.” It’s true that as we get older, the planting, weeding, digging and even harvesting can get a bit beyond us. Downsizing to an apartment or joining a retirement community can also put a serious dent in our vegie garden aspirations. But there is a way our cherished home-grown vegies can co-exist with rickety knees, failing leg muscles and iffy backs, as well as limited garden space – a straw bale garden. Not only is a straw bale garden inexpensive, you can put it wherever you want and it’ll eventually turn into compost to feed next season’s garden – how’s that for recycling? Okay, so here’s the drill … once you’ve bought your bale(s): 1. Choose a sunny spot for permanent placement when it’s still dry (it gets mighty heavy once wet). If on grass, lay newspaper layers or cardboard beneath it to prevent weeds growing up through it. To avoid bending, you can place it on a knee-high surface – leaving about 30cm all around so that as the bale gradually decomposes, the “mess” can be easily swept into a container. 2. Position the bale so the narrow side showing cut straw ends is facing up – this allows better moisture penetration. 3. Condition the bale first. For the first three days, water it thoroughly so it stays damp. For the next six days, continue watering and add a liquid fertiliser. On day 10, it’s back to just watering until the temperature inside the bale (it gets really hot) has cooled down to external air temperature. Then it’s time to plant. 4. Choose smaller plants, such as herbs, lettuces, rocket, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries and cherry tomatoes – or flowers. Make a suitably sized hole in the bale, add in quality potting soil for extra nutrients and stability, and pop the seedling in. Fertilise every two to three weeks and don’t let the bale dry out. SPORT Sunbury easy in top spot, Romsey smells relegation Romsey needs to find consistency with the bat if it wants to avoid relegation in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Romsey sits seventh on the ladder after 10 rounds, just under four points ahead of bottom placed Rupertswood. With four rounds remaining, including three against sides currently in the top four, Romsey needs to find form, as skipper Chris Burkett well knows. “I’ve said numerous times that our consistency isn’t good enough,” he said. “Our good is very good, but our bad is not up to scratch. It’s about finding the middle ground.

“We can compete with every side when we’re playing well,” Burkett said. “We have to win a couple of games in the run home. It’s close from the last spot in the finals; it will be interesting.” On Saturday, poor batting again cost Romsey, and it lost to Bacchus Marsh. Chasing 9-271, Romsey started well and was 2-131. That momentum couldn’t be sustained, and Romsey lost 8-49 to be all-out for 179. Burkett said batsmen struggled to form partnerships after the promising start. “We started well with the top three, and looked to set a platform for the middle and lower order,” he said. “Once they started to get a couple wickets, they got wickets consistently.

“Credit to Marsh, they bowled well,” he conceded. “The better team on the day prevailed.” Burkett top-scored, making 50. Meanwhile, other results have seen a shuffle of the ladder with changes to three of the top four positions. Sunbury stays on top after an easy win over Woodend. Defending 218, Sunbury bowled Woodend out for just 98. Jason McGann was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-9 off 20.5 overs, which included 15 maidens. Sunbury was 3-40 in its second innings. The loss means Woodend slips out of the top four to sixth, while Riddell has moved in after a big win over Rupertswood.

Teen star on fast track By Tara Murray East Sunbury’s Jessica Hourigan is enjoying an exciting cricket journey. Having just turned 13, she’s starting to climb up the cricketing ranks – including joining Premier Cricket club Essendon Maribyrnong Park. Hourigan started playing cricket when she was 10, having been down at East Sunbury with her father Mark, who was at the time the club’s senior coach. “I started playing in under-12s as dad was helping out,” she said. “I knew some of the boys and we’re all friends. My sister and I were the only girls. Now it’s just me.” Playing in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s junior competitions, Hourigan caught the eye of Essendon Maribyrnong Park, which invited her to come down to the club. She’s been playing for the club’s thirds side, EMP/Williamstown Congs, which plays in CV Women’s Community Cricket north-west competition, while also continuing to play for East Sunbury. “It’s a big step, with some of the girls playing for Australia and the [Melbourne] Renegades,” the medium pace bowler said. “There’s better coaches and better players. “Myself and one other girl, [Sunbury United’s] Kara Gifford, were invited down. We are the youngest down there. It’s fun playing with the thirds. Most of the teams, it’s their top side, where it’s our third side.” Earlier this month Hourigan played in EMP’s second team in the Victorian Premier Cricket reserves competition. She said just being around the players at that level had been beneficial. “I got to help them out and see how it goes – seeing how some of them bowl and bat,” she said. “It’s good learn a few things off my coach, Karen Rolton [former Australian women’s captain and highest run scorer], with my batting. I’m not that good a batter.” As well as making the move to a Premier Cricket club, Hourigan was selected in the Central Highlands under-14 team for the state championships, despite being bottom age. She became the second East Sunbury player to be selected for Highlanders’ state championship side. The Highlanders were knocked out in the semi-finals. Hourigan made 21 runs and took three wickets, including 3-5 in one game. “It was a tough competition, but it was fun,” she said. “It was mostly playing cricket with other girls, which is different to just playing with the boys. I was happy with finals – wasn’t expecting it. “Coming up against tough opposition, I was happy I got a bowl and a bat and got to see what it’s like. I want come back next year and hopefully go better.

In complete control after the first day, the Bombers put on 9-260, well past Rupertswood’s total of 91. Bombers’ skipper Mick Allen was again highest run-scorer, making 94. Rupertswood finished their second innings 6-101. The Bombers are now third on the ladder, jumping both Bacchus Marsh and Woodend. Gisborne did its top-two hopes no harm with its victory over Diggers Rest Bulla. Needing just 102 for the win, the Dragons piled on the runs, finishing 7-337. Beau Valka was the standout, making 116. The results move the Dragons to second, and Diggers Rest Bulla slips to fourth. Tara Murray

Sunbury is focussed on securing a top two spot in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. After Saturday’s results Sunbury, in fourth spot, is just six points behind second-placed Deer Park and three points behind third-placed Moonee Valley. Saturday’s result for Sunbury produced the biggest win of the division 1 season, beating Altona Sports 124 (18)-47 (0). Mark Cowan’s rink won 32-6, Brad Willoughby’s rink won 28-14, Brad Janner’s rink got up 37-13 and Carla Krizanic’s rink won 27.14

Sunbury Lions’ women’s and youth girls football sides will play in the Essendon District Football League this season. The senior team had been playing in the Victorian Women’s Football League, and the youth girls teams in a combined Essendon District and Western Region Youth Girls competition, but due to a change of structure, neither of those competitions will run this year. The Lions considered both AFL Goldfields league and EDFL competitions for its female teams before deciding on the EDFL. The club is still after players for its senior, under-12, under-15 and under-8 youth girls sides. The club is also seeking coaches for all three youth girls sides. Riddell is through to the final four of Cricket Victoria’s Regional Big Bash competition. The Bombers accounted for Leitchville/Gunbower in its quarter final on Sunday. Leitchville/Gunbower made 5-102 off its overs, with Riddell skipper Mick Allen taking 2-11. The Bombers made the runs with five wickets and two and half overs to spare. Allen top-scored with 40. Meanwhile, the Bombers will face Mt Clear in the division 1 final of the Central Highland’s Cricket Willow Region T20 division 1 title, driven by the hope of a second straight division 1 title. Her father, Mark, said the Central Highlands’ program, run by Campbell Wearing and the under-14 coaching panel led by Jenna Fowlie, had provided a great pathway to help with Jessica’s development. As for the future, Hourigan is happy to continue enjoying her cricket and see where it takes her. She’d like to one day play a match with her dad at the Thunder. “I want to work my way up at EMP and at Highlanders,” she said. “I want to try to make the state team. I’m enjoying going out there and having fun with everyone I’m playing with.”

Netball coach returns to Sunbury Lions with big ideas Adam Boldiston is excited about returning to the Sunbury Lions. Boldiston coached the Lions’ A-grade netball side to a Ballarat Netball League grand final in 2015 before Victorian Netball League commitments prevented him from coaching the side last season. The Lions got back in touch with Boldiston late last year and the timing turned out to be perfect. “Last year, being involved with the state league girls I just couldn’t fit it all in,” he said. “Sunbury approached me before Christmas about coming back. I’m not coaching in the state league any more, so I have more time.”

This time around, Boldiston will coach the A-grade and B-grade sides. He said his season of coaching Monash University’s VNL state championship side had helped develop his coaching skills. “I gained experience in an elite environment,” he said. “I’m looking at bringing the same game plan for both A and B grade sides.” The Lions were knocked out in the first week of the finals last year. Several players were playing in two different Saturday netball competitions, which left the Lions short of players at times. The Lions’ B grade and C grade sides won premierships. Boldiston said this year the club would work

on having have a stable line-up with a focus on bringing younger players through the teams. He said 2015 players Elly Randall and Ruth Smith were returning, while he was hopeful a couple of other former players would play some role. The Lions have lost captain Beck Anstey. “We could possibly have some state league girls play as well,” he said. “We’re hoping to get youth from Sunbury coming into the grades. The B grade side has been going great, with a real experienced side. They started to blood girls last year. We’d hate for all the experienced girls to retire at the one time and have no one coming through.” The Lions are holding netball trials for all

five sides. The first will run from 10.30am on February 4 and the second on February 9 from 7pm. Meanwhile, the club’s senior footballers will start training on January 30. The club will have four senior teams this season, including a thirds team. Interested players should contact senior coach Ben Jordan on 0400 809 013. The club is also looking for trainers for all of its football and netball sides. Club recruit with a world view By Tara Murray When Sunbury Cricket Club’s Apolinaire Stephen didn’t make his school’s soccer team, he decided to try his hand at cricket. Teachers saw something they liked with bat and ball in hand, and the youngster was selected in the school’s under-15 team. The decision proved to be a sound one, with Stephen now one of Vanuatu’s most talented young cricketers. He made the Vanuatu under-19 team when he was just 16 and now, at 21, he has already played for his nation’s senior team. “I was picked in the under-19 Vanuatu team two or three times,” he told Star Weekly. “The first time was when I was 16 and we went to South Africa. I was one of the youngest and it was a good experience. “We are a small country playing against bigger countries like Afghanistan, Canada, Italy and Argentina.” Stephen has also represented an East-Asia Pacific team, resulting in two trips to Australia to play cricket. Looking to take his cricket to the next step, Stephen signed late last year with Gisborne and District Cricket Association side Sunbury, becoming the club’s first import. Playing in Australia was something he’d wanted to do, and it’s an experience he’s enjoyed despite some typically chilly Melbourne weather. “My [Vanuatu] coach Shane Deitz is Australian and knows people here,” he said. “He met with Justin [Nelson, the Sunbury coach] and they were talking about cricket and that’s how I ended up in Sunbury.” Deitz, who played Sheffield Shield cricket for South Australia, said a bit of luck had played a role in getting Stephen to Sunbury. Deitz met the coach while Nelson was performing his other role, as a comedian, during a performance in Vanuatu. “We got talking and he said they would love to get a player in,” Deitz said. “I had ‘Apo’ in mind, thinking he would be the right fit. He needed a family environment and the club has been fantastic for him.” Stephen, who has been living with Nelson and his family, has had a tough start to his cricket in Sunbury, averaging 10.7 with the bat while taking 11 wickets across all formats. But he’s also taking lessons from every game he plays. “It’s my first time playing on an overseas contract and it’s good to play a different level of cricket,” he says. “In Vanuatu we only have seven clubs. It’s a lot higher level over here. When I arrived I was a bit shy and didn’t play well, but I’m starting to find my form. I love playing cricket in Australia, it’s been good for me.” Deitz describes Stephen as a “really attacking” bowler. “We normally play 20 and 32-over cricket, so he has to learn the longer format of the game. “He’s a different type of bowler with natural talent. He’s a great athlete who’s still learning the game. It’s about teaching them about the mental side of the game and turning them into good cricketers.”

With Sunbury on top of the ladder, Stephen is hoping he hits form at the right time. “Hopefully, we can make the grand final,” he says. “We’ve got a really good team. We’re a big chance to win the competition.” Playing in Sunbury has opened up other cricket opportunities. Stephen showed enough to be selected for the GDCA team which played in last week’s Bendigo Country week. “I was sitting at home and they said I’d made the side,” he said before the competition. “It’s nice and a good opportunity for me to play on turf for my preparation for the ICC World Cricket League coming up next month.” Deitz had also tried for Stephen and other

Vanuatu Australian-based players to become net bowlers for BBL side Melbourne Stars, but timing and injuries prevented it happening. It was something Stephen had been looking forward to. “It is disappointing. “I want to go back to Vanuatu and share my experience, and that would have been something to tell them about.” Stephen hopes his country can keep progressing through the levels of world cricket. The game itself is growing in Vanuatu, becoming one of its most popular, with the Vanuatu Cricket Association now one of the nation’s biggest sports organisations.

First up for Stephen and Vanuatu is the 2017 International Cricket Council’s World Cricket League (WCL) East Asia-Pacific regional tournament to be held later next month in Bendigo. The competition is a qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cricket League ‘Division Five’ competition. Vanuatu will enter the event as favourites. A change of format meant Vanuatu had to qualify anew for the Division Five competition, despite finishing fourth last time. “Hopefully, we can compete in the bigger events and get to the World Cup,” Stephen says. “That’s the aim.”

Volleyball bid for player lift Woodend Volleyball is on the hunt for players who can spike, set and serve as it looks to expand. The competition, which has been going for more than 10 years, currently has four teams. In its search for new blood, the competition will be happy to accept whole new teams. The competition is holding a free come-and-try day on Thursday, February 2. Natalie Korinfsky said the competition provided an affordable sports option for people of all ages. “We’re hoping to add a couple more teams to the competition and build it up,” she said. “We’ve got a mixture of people from juniors who are as young as 12 and players who are as old as 70. “We encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved.” Korinfsky said existing players were happy to help new players learn the game, saying it didn’t take long to pick up the rudiments. She said it was a very social competition, with many players meeting up outside of game commitments. Games are played on Thursday nights, with two seasons a year. Sunbury United has returned to the winners’ list and stayed in the hunt for a top two spot in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. Having dropped its past two games and slipping to third, United responded in a big way against bottom side Ashfield. Defending the 8-313 it made on day one, United bowled Ashfield out for 104, with Ashfield skipper Ryan Pretty top scoring with 29. Leif Louwen-Skovdam took 6-19 for United. Sent back in, Ashfield was 0-20 when the game ended. The win wasn’t enough for United to move back into the top two, with Lancefield and Wallan both getting wins. Lancefield moved to the top of the table, with an outright win against Macedon. Having already claimed first-innings points on day one, the Tigers were keen to take full advantage. Resuming at 2-18 and still trailing the Tigers by 38 runs, Macedon was bowled out for 112, leaving the Tigers needing 59 for an outright. They reached the target for the loss of one wicket. Wallan had a solid win against Bacchus Marsh. Chasing 174, Wallan made the runs with five wickets in hand. It went on to make 6-206. East Sunbury got its third win of the season with an easy win against St Anthonys.
