Sunbury set to sprawl New plans out for a Sunbury of the future have sparked the wrath of residents still waiting for critical infrastructure to support the town’s already burgeoning growth. The recently released Sunbury South and Lancefield Road precinct structure plans envisage four new town centres and 20,000 more homes in the next 50 years. The plans, prepared by the Victorian Planning Authority, are out for public comment, but the backlash has already been felt as far as Spring Street where local MP Bernie Finn vented his anger in Parliament earlier this month. His comments reflect those of Sunbury Residents’ Association president Bernie O’Farrell, who said locals are worried about the implications of the proposed expansion on the town’s existing traffic woes and its infrastructure shortfalls. “We have many issues, but at the top must be the current lack of infrastructure to support the current population,” Mr O’Farrell said. “Before we think about a dramatic increase in population, we need the Bulla bypass, the road from Jackson’s Hill to Vineyard Road, the multi-storey carpark and numerous other upgrades.” The ‘working names’ for the four new town centres are Yellow Gum, Emu Creek, Redstone Hill and Harpers Creek. The Sunbury South precinct plan covers about 1798 hectares bounded by Watsons Road and Jacksons Creek to the south, Gellies Road and Emu Creek to the north and north-east, a transmission line easement to the east and Vineyard Road to the west. The Lancefield Road precinct plan

applies to about 1095 hectares of land bounded by Racecourse Road and Jacksons Creek to the west, Gellies Road to the south, Emu Creek to the east, and a future conservation reserve to the north. The Victorian Planning Authority said Redstone Hill will be a major town centre, with the rest defined as local centres. The Redstone Hill area is centred on the intersection of Sunbury-Bulla Road and Lancefield Road.

- Bernie O’Farrell Each precinct will include a mix of housing, light industrial, commercial and business zones, along with parks. Two employment hubs, seven primary schools, three secondary schools, shopping, entertainment facilities and community centres are also planned. Victorian Planning Authority chief executive Peter Seamer said the plans are designed to bring “an urban feel” to the region while maintaining Sunbury’s existing character. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said that “while it will take another 30 years for Sunbury to develop, we need long-term plans in place, which have input from the community.” The VPA will hold consultation sessions on the new precinct structure plans at Sunbury Bowling Club on Monday, December 5 and Thursday, December 8, 5-8pm. Submissions close February 6, 2017. Details: vpa.vic.gov.au/shapevictoria

BEN, TOM, CALLUM, MATT AND SHANE SANKEY

Sankey, ditto, in the scorebook The Sankey family made history when they stepped onto the cricket field for Lancefield in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association the past two weekends. Playing in north grade against Macedon, five members from three generations of the Sankey family took to the field. While the result didn’t go the Tigers’ way, the match was special for all those involved. ■ Full story: Page 36
