Love for a Sunbury son By Esther Lauaki Junior Sunbury football players who encompass the spirit of one of the Sunbury Lions’ favourite sons, will be recognised with an annual award. The club has named a trophy in honour of senior footballer Sam Dunne, who died from severe head injuries in March after a brutal assault at a house in Flemington. The 24-year-old played for the Sunbury Lions and his family continues to be actively involved in the Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club. “I can’t describe how honoured we are that the club would have a trophy named in Sam’s memory,” his dad Hayden said.
“I think this captures Sam’s essence as a footballer and also as a person.” The inaugural trophy, which recognises and rewards a player who possesses great character, speed and resilience, went to Jezz Petrincic. Mr Dunne, who coaches the club’s under-10s, his wife Jennifer and younger sons Brodie, 12, and Cooper, 9, were all there when the Sam Dunne Trophy was recently presented to the junior club’s “most determined under-14s player”. Mr Dunne said that although his family would continue to come to terms with their loss, the award symbolises the importance of community.
“I have two sons that play for the under-10s and under-12s teams – [Sam’s death] has been very traumatic for them,” Mr Dunne said. “His little brothers lost their hero and we lost our eldest son. My wife continues to struggle to come to terms with our loss every day, as do I. “Coaching has been good for me in helping me get through the year and my wife has also received a lot of support through the club. “This has been a massive blow for our family. We’re battling to do the best we can in what is a very [bad] situation. “If any good came out of this, it would have to be that the local club rallied around us this year.”
Mr Dunne thanked the club’s sponsors, Sunbury Mower and Chainsaw Centre, which threw its support behind the family and initiated the establishment of the Sam Dunne Trophy. Club president Mark Cooke said the Sunbury Lions Football and Netball Club provided a fantastic supportive environment for all its members and families with a strong focus on teamwork, commitment and sense of community. In March, a 19-year-old man was charged with Sam Dunne’s murder. He was remanded in custody after facing the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Deaths spark dog curfew call By Esther Lauaki A Clarkfield farmer wants dog owners to lock up their animals at night after about a dozen of his sheep were mauled by dogs on his property a week ago. Fenton Hill Road sheep farmer John Webb Ware said he found the ewes and lambs either dead or needing to be put down, and another 10 injured, suspecting there had been one or more attacks in the previous few nights. “I’m a vet by profession and there’s no way that these sheep weren’t attacked by dogs,”
Mr Webb Ware said. “About a week before, I heard a bit of carry on with one of the sheep and I knew it was a dog lurking.” Mr Webb Ware said dog owners should not underestimate the mischief their pets got up to at night. “Dog owners are naive to think that if they leave their dog on its mat unrestrained, that it’ll stay there the whole night,” he said. “That’s not the case. They wander a long way, so they’ve got to be secured.” Although the losses are minor in the scale of his farm holdings on 550 hectares, Mr Webb

Ware said it was still distressing to find the dead and injured sheep. “I have been based here for 16 years and it is the first time there’s been a dog attack, so it is quite a shock,” he said. “It will end up costing more than $2000 and I’d like to think the owner of this dog or dogs
will compensate me for my loss and secure their dog and ensure it doesn’t happen again.” Mr Webb Ware, who has contacted adjoining property owners, police and council rangers, believes the attack or attacks were confined to his property. Macedon Ranges council has regularly prosecuted owners of wandering animals found to have attacked livestock, many actions ending in orders from the Kyneton Magistrate’s Court. The Lancefield Agricultural Show has taken a blow from Mother Nature for the second year in a row. The annual show, scheduled for Sunday, has had to be scaled back because of extreme wet weather in the region over recent weeks. The latest setback comes after fires that swept the region were brought under control shortly before they threatened to snuff out last year’s show. Show committee member Vivien Philpotts said torrential rain had turned Lancefield Park to a “waterlogged mess”. “It’s a real shame,” Ms Philpotts said. “We just couldn’t have trucks and animals trudging through our grounds, which are so badly waterlogged you couldn’t drive in. If they didn’t get bogged they’d surely make a mess.” She said the decision to push on with the show reflected the community’s resilience. “I just think these things are iconic. It’s fantastic that the small community of Lancefield can put together such a big event. A lot of people don’t go to the Royal Melbourne Show but wait to attend ours. “We’d love people to come down and support us. There will be free entry and all the indoor activities will still go ahead. “These situations are difficult, but we look forward to the third Sunday of October next year when, all going well, the show will be back in all its glory.” Home craft stalls, a scarecrow competition and children’s entertainment will still be in the pavilion this Sunday. But all outdoor events, including the woodchop, rides, tractor pull and animal competitions have been cancelled.

‘Violent’ flight ends in court Maxwell Winchester still faces a long journey towards a full recovery after what he describes as a nightmare American Airlines flight home left him with a severe brain injury. Dr Winchester, a senior marketing lecturer for Victoria University, was returning from a work trip in Guadalajara, Mexico, in February when his flight to Arizona in the US hit a thunderstorm. The Woodend man is suing American Airlines, claiming it failed to provide medical assistance after the turbulent flight. He said the turbulence was so “violent” it caused him to lose consciousness twice and suffer an injury to his brain. “I’ve always travelled a lot through my work,” Dr Winchester said. “I’ve been through turbulence before but I’ve never experienced anything like what happened on that flight. “It was like an elevator suddenly dropping a floor, then going up with the same force and then dropping again.” Dr Winchester said that after the flight, he told cabin crew he was not feeling well and at first declined medical help, but then he had trouble balancing as he left the aircraft. He said that’s when staff should have insisted on calling paramedics. It was about four months later, when he realised that pain in his head and feelings of vertigo were not improving, that doctors diagnosed him with “axonal tearing”. long distances or cycle for three months and could only work part-time. According to a writ filed in the Victorian Supreme Court last month, Dr Winchester claims to be suffering from neck, head and back injuries, whiplash, concussion, severe headaches, post-concussive syndrome, tinnitus, vision problems and mental health issues. “I’ve lost nearly a year of my life,” he said. “I’ve had to have speech therapy because I had slurred speech. I’ve had six months of intense rehabilitation for balance issues.” Dr Winchester’s legal counsel, Shine Lawyers aviation expert Thomas Janson, said repeated attempts to contact American Airlines and their insurance company led nowhere, prompting the legal action. American Airlines did not reply to Star Weekly’s inquiry.

Fireys’ friends saluted Young filmmakers have been encouraging their peers to make fire safety their top priority. A team of Killara Primary School year 4 pupils beat their peers from around the state to take out the Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s recent student fire safety film competition. Earlier this year, pupils were challenged by MFB firefighters to create a 30-second fire safety film that would appeal to their age group. The Killara pupils’ winning entry was shown at a special screening at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre last month. Supervising teacher Robyn Smith said the pupils couldn’t contain their excitement when they learned of their achievement.
“The video was filmed at a house and showed the importance of having a fire plan,” Ms Smith said. “We used a smoke machine and were able to ‘green screen’ flames. They were so proud when they won; I’m sure it will be the highlight of their year.” Videos had to include one key fire safety message. MFB chief executive Jim Higgins said the competition encouraged the pupils to actively engage with the key fire safety messages. “I’m looking forward to meeting and congratulating all the pupils and teachers who submitted a film,” he said. Volunteer work inspires Ashley Eadon is following her humanitarian dream. Her volunteer work in the Solomon Islands last year fuelled her passion for aid work and helped seal her entry to study law at La Trobe University next year. The Woodend student was one of 26 to be offered a spot in the popular Aspire early admissions program, which rewards the volunteering and community service of applicants and helps them secure a study path before they complete their year 12 exams. Basketball needs a new home By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges basketball is experiencing booming membership and the region’s courts are jam-packed. More than 200 new members have registered to play for the Gisborne Bulldogs next season. The club plays at Woodend and Gisborne sports facilities. The Bulldogs are part of a coalition of clubs, schools, associations and state bodies pushing for a Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub. Court scheduling is at its peak with more

than 3000 basketball, futsal, netball and volleyball players presently sharing 12 indoor sports courts, spread over six towns, in the Macedon Ranges. Basketball Victoria and Netball Victoria also support the push for the centre, which would
include administration space, storage, catering and bar facilities. Macedon Ranges Basketball Association president Megan Condron says the influx of new members supports the calls for a six-court stadium in a central location. “We’re spreading our games out across Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve at Macedon and John Marsden’s Alice Miller School courts as well,” Ms Condron said. “It’s getting very tight on the busloads that we transport for midweek training. We’re trying to get every child a game and also allow
them to train during the week.” Ms Condron said the boost in new registrations was a good sign for sports across the region. “This is exciting news … it means that people are getting active and wanting to play a variety of sports.” She said there were 60 teams, each with eight players, travelling from the Macedon Ranges to play in the Sunbury basketball competition. “We don’t want to have to turn anyone away so I hope we can keep the conversation going and move towards getting a new hub.”

The festival’s main aim is to get them to plant something, grow it, promote it and sell it – to see the whole process. “We’re showcasing the way we use agriculture to help kids learn. There’s lots of maths out here that they don’t even know they’re doing, and they have a lot of fun.” Last year’s festival was a community success, prompting the college to repeat it in 2016. The festival is geared to be a family fun day out with live music, children’s entertainment, shearing demonstrations, tours of the mansion and lessons around the vegetable patch. Mucking in on the farm is all in a day’s learning for students at Salesian College. The fruits of their labour will be on show at the annual Rupertswood Harvest Festival on Sunday, November 6. Now in its second year, the festival showcases the range of agricultural learning that students at the college undertake “on the farm” – actually at their own campus in the Rupertswood Mansion grounds. Students will be selling their seasonal produce and conducting tours of the historic mansion as part of the festival. The mansion was built as a residence for Sir William John Clarke, the first Australian-born baronet, in 1874-76. Agriculture program co-ordinator Matthew Fitzgerald says last year’s inaugural festival was a great learning experience for all the students. “One of the things we do for the harvest festival is let the students produce hay, using

Towns urge better train, bus links By Esther Lauaki Lancefield and Romsey residents feel like they’ve greased the wheels on finally getting a solution for their public transport woes. Public Transport Victoria (PTV) met with close to 100 residents last Thursday to discuss their concerns about train and bus scheduling in the Macedon Ranges. The meeting was in response to a longrunning campaign by Romsey residents Samantha Boswell and Leanne Frost for increased public transport services to their
town. Ms Boswell said scheduling issues had been a decade-long battle for the parents in Romsey and Lancefield who chose to send their children to Sunbury Downs College for a range of reasons, including sport, part-time work and friendship groups. Her own daughter pays to catch a Salesian College school bus to be dropped at Sunbury College in time to catch a connecting bus service to Sunbury Downs College. Her daughter would arrive late to school if she was to use the public bus service because its
connecting service left Sunbury train station at 9am, Ms Boswell said. She added that last week’s meeting had been a move in the right direction. “I think everyone was on the same page,” Ms Boswell said. “There was a great range of different ages there, so that we had a variety of different perspectives. “Just to have PTV recognise that there is a need in our community is a win in itself. “I think everyone felt that way about the meeting.

The Carcarello twins and their parents will join thousands of families in walking to raise awareness about premature babies. The Life’s Little Treasures Foundation’s Walk for Prems in Melbourne on Sunday, October 23, will be part of Australia’s largest national event to raise money to support premature babies and their families. Sunbury mum Tahlia and husband Gary welcomed twin boys Bede and Samuel at just 27 weeks in 2014. The couple’s expanding family already included five children. “They were very fragile when they were born,” Mrs Carcarello said. “We didn’t prepare for a premature birth, we prepared for a healthy birth. So it’s very daunting. There’s a lot to learn … when you have a prem baby, it can be an isolating experience because naturally you want to be with your child around the clock.

Pretty ponies, scream-inducing rides and a doggy dash were high on the list of popular features of Saturday’s Sunbury Agricultural Show. The 96th show, at the recreation reserve at the weekend, drew big crowds. Horse and livestock events, poultry shows, an arts pavilion, sideshows and a treasure trail kept many punters happy, while a pet parade and dog races had plenty of fans. Sunbury Agricultural Society president Anthony McMahon said the combined efforts of the show’s 100 or so volunteers ensured things went off without a hitch. “Volunteers are indispensable to our town and every other town,” Mr McMahon said. “They are indeed the silent majority behind every worthwhile thing that happens in this country of ours.”

MY PLACE A sense of community was always high on Marg Dearricott’s priority list when she and her husband relocated to Kyneton 17 years ago. She speaks with Esther Lauaki about her love for the region. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges? We had lived all around the state because my husband was a school teacher … we came from hot, dry, flat country way up north in Pyramid Hill before we moved to Kyneton 17 years ago. What made you move to Kyneton? We always hear about people talking about tree changes, but really we should be talking about newcomers. To come to Kyneton was wonderful because of the undulating countryside, the greenery. We spent a lot of time just looking around at Mount Macedon and Woodend before we decided to make the move. Pyramid Hill had a lovely community and when we moved here there was that sense of community here as well. It’s very important to me.
I was involved in the kids’ school committees, and then I went and worked for federal politician Neil O’Keefe for 12 years. His office was here in Kyneton and getting to know more about the community through that work was very interesting. I was also with Cobaw Community Health for seven years before I went to work with Geoff Howard, who is the state member for Ballarat East. I learned about state and federal issues and was able to connect with the community a lot. I also feel strongly about women’s advocacy and was

in charge of the Zonta club for more than 20 years. You also have a lot to do with the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival, which was held recently. I’ve been doing that for 13 years … the festival has just grown and grown. I was the “Queen of
the festival” in 2013. They didn’t let me get away without that title. It’s a wonderful showcase of all areas of the community. What drives your community spirit? I think it’s a great place. Because it’s a great place I feel a great connection to Kyneton. I just love interacting with people.

What’s your favourite thing about the area? The locality of Kyneton to Melbourne is so handy. The highways have improved over the past 34 years, so it’s much better now to get in and out. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a Punjabi culinary mix made in heaven … When Sadia Kiyani arrived here from Pakistani Punjab about four years ago, she soon realised she would need a driver’s licence. Her driving instructor, Ravinder Chauhan, hails from Indian Punjab, and the pair struck up a friendship that bloomed into a restaurant. Sada Bahaar (meaning ‘evergreen’) is situated on a stretch of Ballarat Road that is never, ever going to win any beauty contests … but it is showing signs of increasing foodiness, with a long-time Sri Lankan place we have yet to cover, a much newer, cheap ‘n’ cheerful Sri Lankan place, as well as a burger joint. Also nearby – just around the corner really – is the wonderful West of Kin. With its origins in friendship, Sada Bahaar is a comfy eatery with a vibe that is almost un-restaurant – the same person who takes your order is also going to be among those knocking your food together in the kitchen … we like that. We like, too, the chance to explore some different dishes from the usual Indian stuff we devour on a weekly (at least) basis. To that end, our very good buddy Nat Stockley has already made inquiries along those lines even before Bennie and I rock up. We enjoy a very tasty meal that blends Indian and Pakistani tucker in fine home-cooked style. Dahi bhalay ($7.50) are deep-fried urad dal dumplings served with spiced yogurt, chick peas and onion bits. Very nice … Haleem is not so much a Pakistani dish, but more a staple – made of grains, pulses, meat –

This chicken version ($10) is very soup-like, the chook so finely minced that it all becomes one with the ingredients. With its cool fried-onion topping, it reminds me of our favourite Iraqi soup. From the tight barbecue section of the menu we get lamb seekh kebab ($10) – two long, skinless snags of minced lamb that are quite crumbly but nevertheless delicious. All too often the chick peas we get in Indian restaurants seem to be getting a bit tired. By contrast, the Sada Bahaar Lahori cholay ($10) smacks of freshly cooked – but with the gravy and intact pulses nicely integrated. Sada Bahaar special kahari ($14) is a triumph – a rich (and, yes, rather oily) chook curry with high-impact flavours boosted to another level by the many ginger strands and discs of fresh, green chilli of its garnish. The chicken pieces are quite bony. We get one each of the regular and garlic naans ($1 each) – they’re okay but unusual – more like flat bread than most naan we eat. It may be the setting, looking down over vines hugged by gentle, treed hills and fields, and the lake that reflects the sunsets. Perhaps it comes down to sharing a wood-fire pizza with a special other – or a whole gang – outside, surrounded by nature, a glass of pinot noir in hand – poured from “a bottle of Macedon Ranges sunshine”, as winery owner Barbara Nixon calls it. It’s the kind of place where naming the pizza ovens “Mama and Papa Bear” embodies the sense of playfulness and laughter to be found when good, simple food and excellent wines are the centrepiece. Barbara, owner of the winery with husband Bob, says she’s chuffed to see their spruced-up alfresco area being used again, now warmer weather is back. “It’s a lovely time of year at Gisborne Peak,” she says. “The vines are leafing up, the landscape is fresh and green, and it puts us all in the mood for spending time outdoors, around food – and of, course, wine.” Mama and Papa Bear pump out five different pizza choices. Barbara says the fave among visitors is the Tuscan – hot salami, roasted capsicum, onion and a sprinkling of black olives and mozzarella. The Tasters Platter is a good choice for a small crew, while two could easily call it a small meal. It’s also a great way to discover which wine matches best with which tasty morsel – or to show off your wine pairing skills. SPORT Sunbury feels the pain of promotion Sunbury’s return to Bowls Victoria division 1 pennant was a rude awakening as the side copped one of its biggest losses in years. Having been one of the dominant teams in division 2 in the past few years, Sunbury faced a new challenge on Saturday – division 1, section 1. Playing Glenroy, Sunbury went down 98 (11)-63 (1). Mark Cowan’s rink won Sunbury’s only point of the day, finishing 17-17. Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 26-17, Elise Cowan’s rink lost 28-16 and Brad Janner’s rink lost 26-12. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said they clearly got beaten by a better side. “It was a bit of a wake-up call being back in division 1,” he said. “It’s the first time we’ve lost by that much in a long time. We’re under no illusions … it won’t
be an easy season. Every match is going to be a hard one.” Glennon said the club had managed to hold on to most of its player group from the previous season, with only one new player playing in the top side in round one. Elisa Rigoni, who is travelling down from Shepparton each week, made her debut for Sunbury on Saturday. Rigoni, a member of the Victorian under-25 team, is one of several talented young female players new to the club. State under-18 duo Mikayla Long and Lisa Trewarne have also joined, with Glennon saying he expected to see both play in the top side as the season progresses. in the country, was a drawcard to attracting new players. Long and Trewarne played with Krizanic in the women’s winning fours team at the state championships. It was a tough weekend for Sunbury overall, with only two of the six teams, the second team (division 3) and fourth team (division 5), recording wins. But in some good news for the club, Krizanic last week won the 2016 National Champion of Champions women’s title. Playing at Keilor, where she started her career, Krizanic won all five of her matches, with a 21-15 win against the Northern Territory’s Bronwyn Chandler sealing her second successive national champion of champions title. Season opener a thriller By Tara Murray If the opening day of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season is anything to go by, competition will be just as close as last season. Two matches went down to the final over of the day, while the other two matches were more than competitive. Reigning premiers Gisborne, along with Sunbury, started the season with thrilling wins, while runners-up Diggers Rest Bulla, and Woodend, both recorded solids starts. A four off the second last ball of the match got the Dragons’ season off to the right start against Bacchus Marsh. Only two batsmen passed 20 for the Bulls, but the lower order put enough runs together to make 178, before being bowled out in the final over of the innings. The Dragons shared the wickets around, with four players taking two each. In reply, Dragons’
top and middle orders did all the work. They were made to fight it out, with that four on the second last ball getting them across the line. The Dragons finished 4-179. Jason Wilson top-scored, with 65 not out. Sunbury’s match against Riddell was even closer, with the result decided on the final ball of the match. Riddell batted first and made 4-178. Led by the top order, Sunbury got off to a good start, and was cruising at 1-108, but a quick turnover of wickets got Riddell back into the game. With one wicket in hand, Sunbury hit the winning runs off the last ball of the game. Heath Boffey top-scored for Sunbury with 57. In the other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla proved too good for a promoted Rupertswood side. Playing in the top division for the first time since the 2012-13 season, Rupertswood made a hard-fought 8-118 off its overs.

The Burras shared the wickets around, with three players taking two wickets each. In reply, the Burras made the runs with six overs and four wickets to spare. Playing coach Kevin Barker top-scored with 28. Woodend started its season off with a victory over Romsey. After winning the toss, Woodend made 5-165 from its 40 overs. Former premier cricketer Michael Nalesnyik top-scored with 53 not out, while skipper Adam Johnstone made 40. In reply, Romsey finished its innings at 9-137. Matthew Burkett top-scored with 35, while Taylor Stevenson, who has come across from Macedon, made 33. Tom Robson was a star with the ball, taking five wickets.

Ranges teens catch hoops selector’s eye There’s no shortage of talent in the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association. The association has 10 players in Basketball Victoria country age group representative squads to compete at separate championships early next year. Boys and girls squads of under-14s, 16s and 18s will represent BV Country at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (ACJBC) in Albury-Wodonga. Separate under-14 boys and girls teams, and two under-15 teams, will compete at a Southern Cross Challenge in Melbourne. Basketballers selected in under-15s, under-16s and under-18s will also be part of a national intensive training program (NITP). Macedon Ranges association head coach Bart Barnes said this was by far the biggest number of players selected for representative teams. He said several players had been selected previously, but to have 10 players chosen from a small association like MRBA was unusual. The players are Tate Barnes (under-14s), Lauren Trakosas (ACJBC under-14s, emergency), Erin Condron (Southern Cross under-14s), Maddison Nash (under-15s), Jordan Phillips (under-16s, emergency) and Tess Barnes, Annabel Strahan and Madeline Condron (under-16s). Also selected were Nick Grantham and Sebastian McArdle, who were in the under-18 team early this year. Their performances at the ACJBC earned their selection for the Vic Country team in the national titles. “We’re pretty happy with the kids’ progress; it has been coming,” Barnes said. “We’re not completely surprised to see so many selected with the talent coming through. We’re very excited.” Barnes said being selected in these teams was a sign that the Macedon Ranges could match it with the best of the state. Basketballers who are part of the NITP will train weekly in Bendigo under the eye of Women’s National Basketball League coach Simon Pritchard. “The NITP means they’ve already been identified and will train in a more intensive program that will help push them, hopefully into state and Australian teams,” Barnes said. “Bendigo wasn’t initially selected as a location and we were looking at having to travel to Ballarat or Geelong, but with so many local athletes selected and Simon wanting to get on board, [Basketball Victoria] couldn’t say no.” The record number of players selected caps off two big years for Macedon Ranges, which hosted the BVC Regional Academy program in that time. St Anthonys has sent out an early warning it will again be in the mix with a comprehensive defeat of Ashfield in the opening round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Last season’s runner-up side made 7-168 off its overs. Geoff Edwards was the best of the bowlers for Ashfield taking three wickets. In reply, Ashfield was bowled out for 93. Former skipper Jason King was the only batsmen to offer resistance, making 39. Wallan won a thriller against East Sunbury at Greenhill Reserve. The Thunder was sent in and made 9-139 off its 40 votes. Matthew Jackson top scored with 25, with most players getting starts but not going on with it. In reply, Wallan passed the score with one wicket in hand, finishing on 9-142. Jake Calleja took three wickets for the Thunder. In positive news for the Thunder, captain-coach Jessy Carroll returned to the field after health issues. Lancefield chased down Bacchus Marsh’s total of 9-118 with ease. The Tigers shared the bowling around, with Matthew Bowden and Glenn Caton taking three wickets each. The Tigers reached the target with wickets down and nearly 10 overs to spare, making 5-121. Sunbury United had a tough initiation to the B-grade competition. After being relegated from the McIntyre Cup after last season, United faced Macedon first up. United could only make 130 after winning the toss, with Brett McDorman top scoring with 41. Brendon Scott took five wickets for Macedon. Macedon made the chase look easy, cruising to 0-131.

Gisborne gets its vengeance Gisborne took the points in the opening round division 1 grand final rematch of the Central Highlands Bowls Division on Saturday. Looking for revenge over Kyneton Golf, which knocked them off in last season’s grand final, Gisborne had to do it the hard way before they could savour the sweetness of their win on Saturday. Gisborne only won one of the four rinks, but the 31-17 rink win by Glenn Johnston junior proved enough for them to take out the honours on the day, 91 (12)-85 (6). In other news, Lancefield had a big win against Trentham, which returned to the top grade. Lancefield won all four rinks, including a 20-shot win to Jeff Holmes, to come out on top, 126 (18)-67 (0). Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh split the rinks in their opening round match. With three of the four rinks separated by seven or eight shots, an 18-shot win in the fourth rink separated the two teams, with Kyneton coming out winners with 88 (14)-77 (4). In the other division 1 match, Woodend defeated Romsey. The two teams split the four rinks at two apiece, with Woodend winning 102 (14)-84 (4). Macedon, Gisborne Yellow, Bacchus Marsh and Mt Cottrell were the winners in division 2. Meanwhile, Woodend, Diggers Rest, Macedon and Trentham all won their opening round matches in division 3.

Brumbies pull out of comp

A lack of numbers has seen Clarkefield Brumbies make the heartbreaking decision not to field a cricket side this season. The Brumbies, playing in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association, fielded one team the past two seasons, but heading into this season have struggled to get enough players. President David Heydrich said the decision to not field a team for the first time since 2002 was one that wasn’t taken lightly. The Brumbies finished fifth last year in the division 2 Vic Kyte Shield. “We had a couple of retirements and a couple of boys are going on overseas trips,” he said. “Unfortunately, we would have been playing short the first half of the season and the season would have been gone before it started. “As a president, it was very disappointing and it was hard. I can’t imagine what it was like for some of the founding members of the club who were still playing or involved.” Heydrich said the club would continue to exist, but only in a social capacity. He said those players who were interested in continuing to play had gone to other clubs. “That is the whole thing about keeping it open,” he said. “If we can source players in the future we can play again.”
On a wet and miserable Sunday in September, Sean Crawford became one of just two players to be part of a third straight under-18.5 Riddell District Football League premiership for Rupertswood. Crawford knew that winning feeling, having been part of the winning team in two previous seasons, but this win was just a bit more special. For most of the year, playing football was the last thing on Crawford’s mind. He was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma in February after his father noticed a lump on his neck and after a whirlwind of tests and biopsies, diagnosis was confirmed – cancer. The tests revealed the cancer had been spreading for 12 months. In that time Crawford had completed year 12, played in a football premiership, went on schoolies and was in the middle of preseason. “I didn’t notice, it was my dad who noticed it,” Crawford recalled last week. “It was in my neck region, in my throat and two spots in my lungs. I was stage four.”

Crawford was prescribed six months of chemotherapy, heading to the hospital once a fortnight for treatment. “It was a bit nerve-wracking at first, walking in there,” he said. “I was probably the youngest person around. “I had minimal side effects … and then it started to get worse . The last four dosages … “I got a PET scan midway through and it said I was clear of it [cancer] but I had to keep doing the chemo.” Crawford’s friends and football club rallied around him and his family. Among all the gestures, two really stood out. One of Crawford’s closest friends organised for a group of friends to visit him at home one night and they all shaved their heads. “It meant a lot to me. They were supportive through the whole treatment,” Crawford said. “At the football club, all through the juniors and seniors, they wore yellow arm bands. It was pretty special.” The arm bands were also in support of another Rupertswood family member going through her own cancer battle, Mary Morrice. Crawford and Morrice first met each other at the day chemo unit. Despite his ill health, Crawford attended almost every Rupertswood training session and game. He was named vice-captain and managed to play two games early in the year while having treatment, and a third in August. “It was a bit of normality,” he said of going to the club. “[Under-18.5 coach] Tony [Lucas] was trying to qualify me for finals, and there were weeks they were short on players. It kind of matched up with my week without the chemo, and I was feeling good to play. “He gave me the job of coaching the midfield. I was a bit nervous going towards that role [midfield coach]… it was a big step up.” “In the seniors, I was doing the board for Fitzy [Kevin Fitzgerald] … I was still getting involved.” Come finals time Crawford found himself in the mix and he was named in the side’s semi-final team. “I wanted to tell Tony that I didn’t expect to play,” he said. “I didn’t want to get picked just because I had cancer; I wanted to earn it. “When I got picked on the Thursday night at selection, it was a pretty good feeling.” Crawford was swamped by his teammates when he kicked a goal in the semi-final, and was named among the best players. His semi-final game cemented his spot in the grand final, when Rupertswood went on to defeat Woodend-Hesket, 19.14 (128)-7.11 (53).

“When I was diagnosed, I didn’t expect to play at all this year. I was just focused on the year after, and getting back to health,” Crawford said. His parents Jo and Andrew are full of praise for the football club and the support given to Sean, and the family. Andrew spoke at the club’s best and fairest night, thanking the club, in particular Lucas and president Paul Ross. “The two most important things that we wanted for Sean – for him to know that he was not alone in his fight and that the people who loved and cared for him would be with him all
the way,” Andrew said, “And to focus on his future, a bright and normal future – Rupo were invaluable in both regards.” Crawford, who recently turned 19, was last week given the all clear from doctors. He will have to have regular blood tests, but can go back to living a normal life. Crawford said he’s looking forward to many things, including playing footy next year in the seniors and/or reserves at Rupertswood. “It’s certainly a journey, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I was unlucky, but there’s not much else you can do about it. I guess acceptance is a big part of it.”
